Thinkpad Edge E431 - how to disable the touchpad?

Q: Thinkpad Edge E431 - how to disable the touchpad?

Been navigating a few different forums quite a bit for this one.We downgraded this Lenovo E431 to windows 7 to fit our corporate environment. There is no disable option in the BIOS.The windows 7 drivers do not add the UltraNAV tab. Always fails on the 3rd portion as the 2 green check marks pass on the first 2 components and fail on the 3rd. Ran under both the user and admin accounts. No other missing drivers. The device manager does not show any touchpad drivers aside from a "universal" mouse driver which can not be uninstalled.Registry mod will not change this. Aside from pulling the ribbon cable out I am sort of at a loss. First time ever being stumped by a touchpad.....Last time ever buying an E431 for our environment, we've had 3 of these so far and nothing but issues. Sticking with other Lenovo models. Any ideas?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Thinkpad Edge E431 - how to disable the touchpad?

I realize this is an old question, but my reply may help some with the same new question. There's a quick answer for those who know what they are doing and a longer answer for those who don't. On my Lenovo Edge 2-1580 I couldn't turn off the detestable touch pad. Here's the part you know:Because this is a Synaptics touchpad, the option to disable it if an external mouse is connected, simply isn't there. You also might know that if you go into regedit and look for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Synaptics\SynTPEnh and change the value to 33 it should work ... but doesn't. What I found is if you go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Synaptics\SynTPEnh and change THAT value to 33, reboot your computer, it does indeed work! Pull the receiver from the USB port and the touchpad starts working again! For those not familiar with regedit, your best option is to find someone who is and have them do it because editing the registry is not something you want to be doing if you don't know what you're doing. To give you an idea of how dangerous it is, read this article on what the registry is and how your computer can stop working if you mess it up, http://www.techsupportalert.com/content/what-everybody-should-know-about-windows-registry.htm Now that I've scared the newbies and made them understand how critical it is, it isn't difficult to do this little fix if you can follow instructions. So here are the step by step instructions for you. I take no responsibility in what happens to your computer! This worked for me. Press the Windows Key and R together and you will see a small window with the RUN command.Type REGEDIT and select OK.A permission screen will appear. Select yes.The next window is the Registry, the brains that make your computer work! The first thing you want to do is BACK IT UP!Click on FILE and then EXPORT. Give it a file name, such as original registry.reg or shorten it to orgreg.reg. Leave the "save as type" as the default "registration file." Under EXPORT RANGE make sure ALL is selected. Click SAVE.Now that you have a good working backup saved, you are ready to edit the registry. We are looking for HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Synaptics\SynTPEnhIn the list, find HKEY_CURRENT_USER and click on the > symbol to the left (or double click on the name itself). This will open a long list of other names.Scroll down the list to SOFTWARE. Click on the > symbol to expand the list.Scroll down the list to Synaptics. Click on the > symbol to expand the list.Click one time on SynTPEnh to highlight it. You will see a list of "DWORDS" in the right column.Right click on the DisableIntPDFeature line and select MODIFY.Where it says Value Data, change it from 11 to 33 and click OK.There is no save button. Simply close the window and you are done!Reboot your computer. The change will NOT take affect until you reboot your computer, so save your work and restart or shutdown, whichever works for you. After you reboot, you should notice that as you type, the palms of your hands no longer trigger the touchpad to do things you don't want it to do! It is now turned off as long as you have an external mouse mouse attached. If you unplug that mouse, even without rebooting, your touchpad will wake up! To put it back to sleep, simply plug the mouse back in. If this works for you, you might want to consider backing up your registry again with a new name. Maybe something like disabled touchpad.reg or shorten it to disTP.reg. Anything that you will remember what it is. That way you know you have a good, working registry that no other apps or programs have messed with and that disables the touchpad. It's the FIRST thing I do when I get a new computer! Hope this works for you! Happy surfing!

Hi guys,I have a laptop which is a Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E431 model running on Window 10 Pro OS. It is a Core i3-3110M CPU @2.40GHz 8GB RAM 64-bit OS. My issue is :WLAN / WiFi keeps going ON and OFF every now and then. The WiFi once connected keeps connecting and disconnecting every minute and it sometimes take forever to reconnect back. I will need to right-click on the WiFi Symbol at the bottom right and click on 'Troubleshoot problems' to recover from this issue. Once recovered, it disconnects again. Some Observations :The issue could be because of the conflict between the Bluetooth drivers and the WiFi drivers. If Bluetooth is disabled then the WiFi works correctly. There will be no problems regarding the WiFi getting disconnected. These are the following details of the hardwares and their respective driver versions. Network : Intel(R) Centrino(R) Wireless -N 2230Driver Version : 15.18.0.1Driver Date : 30-04-2015  Bluetooth : Intel(R) Wireless Bluetooth(R)Driver Version : 18.1.1525.1445Driver Date : 18-06-2015 I have no idea why these two are causing this issue, but I really need to fix this. And it has been atleast a year since I bought this laptop and it has been showing this problem since 4 - 5 months back. Please let me know if there is a work around for this. If not atleast I hope the above information might help fixing the issue. If there is any additional information that is needed from me, please leave a m... Read more

my IBM T41 Thinkpad hard drive died and I replaced it, so I lost all the drivers and special software IBM put on it. Once I installed XP I tried to disable the double tap touchpad but XP didnt have a driver so I installed the Lenovo UltraNav. With it I can have full control over the touchpad, except that it does not allow me to disable the double tap. the only tapping options are 'tap and drag' and 'tap zones'. Before the hard drive crashed I had disabled the double tap so I know it is possible. Any ideas? I hate the double tap and it ought to be easy to disable.

Hello, I am trying to disable touchpad on X260. It looks disabled, however one feature keeps enabled. Here is how to reproduce it: 1. Start marking text using TrackPoint and  the left TrackPoint button. Do not release the button.2. While doing this touch the touchpad with two fingers.3. Remove finger from the button.4. Observe the text is still marking with TrackPoint movement. Another way: 1. Click on something which is draggable with the left TrackPoint button. Do not release the button.2. Tap on TouchPad with two fingers.3. Release the button.4. Observe further dragging just with just moving the pointer. It appears that dragging/marking becomes sticky with two-finger tapping though TouchPad is disabled. The desired behaviour is to ignore TouchPad taps (since it's disabled). So, how do I fully disable TouchPad?

New ThinkPad T440p and the first issue I encountered is there is no option to disable the touchpad when an external mouse is detected. I don't want to do it via the bios or some other hack as I use the touchpad when it is not convenient to use an external mouse. So it should be able to do the switching as needed, this is a simple feature that other manufacturers have had for years and years.  I already upgrade the UltraNav Driver to the latest v18.0.7.57 and that didn?t present a solution. I am running Windows 7 SP1 - 64bit.

It's technically part of the driver, so try the registry edit here if you can't find the option in UltraNav settings:http://www.intowindows.com/how-to-turn-off-touchpad-when-mouse-is-connected-in-windows-78-1/

Dell 2-in-1 3147:
The "DELL Pointing Devices" dialog shows a "Disable Touchpad when USB Mouse Present" checkbox. If this checkbox is clear, the touchpad works properly. When this checkbox is marked, the touchpad does not work at all.
I have tried both USB and Bluetooth mice, and neither one allows the proper action: the touchpad should be enabled without a mouse, and the touchpad should be disabled with a mouse.  That's how it works on other systems.  It just doesn't work at all on this system.
I suspect there is some interaction between the touchpad and the touchscreen that is interfering with this setting.  But I have another laptop with a touchpad and a touchscreen, and the mouse detection works there (it's not a DELL).
Yes, I have toyed with the idea of deleting the DELL touchpad control application and installing a "stock" Synaptics touchpad driver.  But I don't want the DELL  "update" app to overwrite it with the DELL touchpad control app every time it sees "the wrong driver" loaded.  And I don't want to take the chance that the touchpad driver and the touchscreen driver are somehow linked together, thus disabling one when I disable the other.
Any ideas on how to get the "Disable Touchpad when USB Mouse Present" action working would be welcome.

It seems that Alps Touchpad isn't fully compatible with Windows 10 given that it couldn't scroll properly on MS Edge. The mouse can scroll, but it scrolls like a snail, like I'm scrolling a backgound application. Indeed, it seems that the touchpad sees MS Edge a background app even though it is in the foreground because if I put Edge as actually a background app and another program (e.g. video player) in the foreground, MS Edge scrolls well without any issue. It seems that Alps sees MS applications as this: foreground app is background app; background app is a foreground app. I hope HP or Alps will provide an updated driver.

Hello, I bought an Edge 2 1580 last month. All of a sudden the items in the subject stopped working and the fan runs full blast.  I think it happened at the same time as a windows 10 update so I tried a roll back but that didn't fix anything. Any chance this is fixable? 1 month old edge 2 1580, keyboard, touchpad/volume/mute/buttons suddenly stop working and the fan works full speed. The touchscreen works. The keyboard types just 1, 6, 2, x, w and q randomly. It doesn't work in BIOS either. The volume and mute buttons do not respond but it does sound if I plug some headphones to the jack port.  I have runned the hardware and device trouble shooter and adviced me to restart. Nothing really changed. Everything looks just right in the Device manadgement tree so I am guessing drivers are fine.

Then I managed to turn it on and everything seems to work just fine. The touchpad seems fine, the keyboard and the speakers too. Regardless of the charger being connected or not. I'll keep you posted if anything else happens, but I have no explanation for this

So could anyone please help me solve my problem? I am willing to post the required information as well.

That setting should be in there somewhere.  The new synaptics control panel is not very intuitive and has faint 'gears' that will get you into special settings.

Can anyone tell me how to disable the feature that automatically moves a window the last few millimeters to the edge of the screen?
To be clear, I am NOT talking about Aero Snap, I just mean when moving a window, it "assists" you by moving it the last little bit when close to an edge.
I wish to stop this and have windows only go exactly where they are put.
I am not using aero, my theme is set to Windows Classic.
I have searched for several days and can't find an answer, just endless stuff about disabling aero snap, which I have already done.

A:How can I disable Edge from opening .pdf files?

Hi, how have you tried to set Adobe as the default program?
How have you verified that it is the default?
Does your default change on reboot?

(It will really help if you can answer those 3)

1. From Win 8 on you can't do that from within a program (tho you won't usually get any indication your attempt will not be saved on reboot).

2. There are several ways to set a default.
Default Apps - Choose in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums

(Note: I have Sumatra set as my reader- it opens very quickly).

3 In general some people have experienced defaults being reset to MS defaults on restart, through having e.g.old version Winzip installed, or (some) after a particular MS update.

So, I thought I had this fixed when I managed to find a tweak for Windows 8 to disable the sticky corners. You set MouseClippingLength from 6 to 0. Seemed to the job. But it turns out, that didn't solve my problem completely. Along the right edge of the screen, there is an area that your cursor can fall into that is outside your full screen windows. It does not span the entire length of the right side, just the top 2/3, and it's 1-3 pixels in width. (I think 2.)

I've been googling all over the place and editing a lot of registry values to see if I can guess at it, but no luck. This ticks me off a great deal because I'm used to swinging my cursor all the way to the right to grab a hold of a scroll bar or close a window. I want it gone.

If anyone knows how to disable it, please let me know.
Edit: As it turns out, my second monitor (an HDTV that's turned off) wasn't working correctly, and I didn't even realize Windows 8 was trying to automatically use both monitors. My bad.

Purchased a Lenovo Thinkpad Edge e520 1143-cto from Lenovo in December, 2011 and now it won't power-up. I plug it in wall, press the power button and nothing. 1 year warranty expired December, 2012.

Can't be the power cord: 1) Tried a cord from another Thinkpad (R61i back in 2008 that's slow but still works) but still get no power, and 2) Edge's cord powers up R61i.

Price to fix probably beyond what the laptop's worth but thought I'd ask anyway. Thanks.

A:Solved: Thinkpad Edge won't power-up

Those models have a faulty EEPROM chip on the motherboard. However there is no recall on them so you will have to pay out of pocket to get it fixed. The cheapest and best way to get it fixed is to call Lenovo and buy an extended warranty for about $130(I think) and then use the newly purchased warranty to get a warranty claim to send it in. Turn around is one to two weeks and shipping is covered both ways. The only upside is that you then have a warranty again on the laptop for other possible issues.

Hi,I need a new charger for my thnkpad edge e145 but I'm a bit worried about the specs on the chargers that I have found. On my battery it says that the voltage is 10.8V and current is 5.8Ah but all the adapters I have found that are supposed to be compatible with my laptop have a voltage around 20V and current around 4.5A. For example this one: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genuine-AJP-IBM-Lenovo-THINKPAD-EDGE-E145-20BCA00L-90W-Ac-Adapter-Charger... Since I don't know anything about how laptop batteries and chargers work I have no idea if a charger with those specs will work for my laptop. Most forums I have looked at seems to suggest that if the current is to low on the adapter it will overheat or not work at all and that to much voltage in the adapter could damage the laptop. Could someone tell me if a charger like this will be safe to use with my laptop? Unfortunately I don't have the charger that came with the laptop anymore so I can't compare it to the new ones. I also couldn't find any information on the adapter on lenovos website or in my hardware maintence manual.

Hey guys, Had my Thinkpad Edge E450, for more than a year now. Never really had any problems with the keyboard. However, since yesterday, my keyboard has simply gone crazy on me. Right shift + c no longer registers, even though right shift + any other key still works. c works too along with c+ left shift. w+e keys, when pressed together doesn't register the e although both keys registers fine when pressed individually. Most weird of all is the fact that F4, associated with microphone no longer works either when FN is locked and when it isn't. However, every time I press the G key, the microphone activates/deactivates. I used the lenovo diagnostics tool and the keyboard passed the tests. Tried clean install windows 10 on the whole system and still the same result. Also tried uninstalling all drivers for keyboard in device manager and it still hasn't gotten any better. I didn't do any manual updates or anything that I know of which could affect the keyboard. Please help! That microphone popup is trying to hog my attention whenever I try to write a paper.

I have (for me very precious) Lenovo ThinkPad Edge 14, where MainBoard died (two short beeps) what was also confirmed by Lenovo authorized service. As the original solution is very expensive for me, I am trying to buy some mb on ebay. I need an advice on type of the mainboard To choose. My MB is PLANAR FRU 63Y2136. But this is not available for reasonable price. My service offered me type  04W4453 and on internet there are available 63Y2131, 32, and 38. Can you help me to choose the alternative for my Edge? Thank you. Specs:ThinkPad Edge 14Type 0578 - G2G S/N - FTDXZ 10/08Product ID 0578G2GIntel i5AMD Radeon Graphical AdapterW7 Pro 64bit

I am presently researching to purchase a laptop for my wife at Christmas who is a teacher thus she will need to access the internet, do Office work, grading, emails, research, etc., but no gaming at all.

Will be running 7 64 OS, with 4 gigs of RAM, and hopefully a 7200 rpm hd. Leaning towards the i5 processor.

The Thinkpad Edge is part of Lenovo's excellent T Series but somewhat less expensive. Looking at current configurations it seems it will deliver what I am looking for but I know nothing of the quality build.

Would love to hear back from people who have used this series and/or from ITs who repair laptops for their insights.

Thanks!
