After 5 years, Win 7 now say the copy is not genuine ????

Q: After 5 years, Win 7 now say the copy is not genuine ????

I was able to solve some hardware problems on my husbands Dell XPS-8300 and it finally stopped freezing. The hardware problem obvious messed up the Windows installation, and because my husband not liked all that junk that came installed from Dell and wanted the HD partitioned in drive C (for software only) and drive D (for all the data), I erased the HD and partitioned it. BEFORE erasing the HD I ran Belarc and printed all the information, including all the software licenses of what was installed. Then I reinstalled Win 7 Ultimate 64 bits on drive C, from scratch on his computer. I typed in the license key that I have from that printed Belarc information, or in other words, the key that Dell used to install and activated this Windows installation. I ran all that updates. Today I restarted computer to do some more installations and by surprise received a message that Windows is not genuine and asked me to type a license key. I repeated the key with what it came installed by Dell. It refuses the key. It opens a windows that says ?the software licensing service reported that the computer BIOS is missing a required license?. I went to MS website to activate it, same problem, they tell me I must pay $199 for the Windows installation. This Windows is running since November 2011 when my husband made the big mistake to buy a Dell computer :-( - looks like Dell is putting pirate software on the computers they sell us and MS accepted it for 5 years??? Any idea what BIOS license they are talking about?

Preferred Solution: After 5 years, Win 7 now say the copy is not genuine ????

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Started the PC yesterday and got a message that my copy of Windows is not genuine, after several years of use. Have tried some steps I found online but generally come up with errors in activation (0x80070005). Last thing I did with the computer before this was install Comodo backup. Tried restoring to earlier backup but problem persists. Have tried Microsoft support but can never get through after extremely long waits. Any help?

Hi Tom,
That install is NON-Genuine.
The product key in use has been "lifted" from the COA sticker on another W7 computer.
The Bios for yours is dated 2 years prior to the official OEM release of W7, (the product type code key in use on your comp)

I suspect this was caused by you installing IRST drivers which broke the activation work around.

Hi, I have started having activation issues and not genuine warnings after nearly 3 years of using my PC. Here is my current situation.

When I am connected to the internet,

Computer > Properties shows "Windows Activated" and the Genuine MS logo.
MGADIAG shows "License Status: Licensed"

When I am disconnected from the internet,

Computer > Properties shows "3 days until automatic activation. Activate Windows Now"
MGADIAG shows "Additional grace period (KMS license expired or hardware out of tolerance)"

I use this PC as a DAW (i.e. strictly for music production). It is disconnected from the internet for long periods of time. I am seriously worried about this activation issue I can't overstate how worried I am.

Here's the history

Sep 2010
I bought an i7-930 PC desktop, Windows 7 Professional x64 OEM on a disk (not preinstalled), and SSD from one of the most reputable computer stores. I installed the SSD, and then installed Windows 7 and activated without a hitch. From Sept 2010 to 15 Aug 2013, I had no activation or genuine copy warnings. 3 years.

July 2013
I upgraded from my 60GB SSD to 240GB SSD by copying the 60GB to 240GB, and there were no problems. I then upgraded from 6GB to 18GB RAM. Again no issues. Do I need to rebuild license store because it's a new SSD disk? Again, I had absolutely no issues after this.

15 Aug 2013
I installed a TI Chipset firewire PCI card. This is how the problem started. Immediately... Read more

Was faced with this issue after turning on an HP G61 laptop today - it was fine yesterday. The computer was purchased new four years ago from PC World. Nothing has been downloaded or installed in the last couple of months except LastPass (around three weeks ago).
A System Restore to a week ago made no difference. I extracted the Windows product key with SIW (the sticker on the bottom of the laptop has worn away) and re-entered it to no avail. We have the recovery discs that we made when it was new out of the box, but don't want to use them if I don't have to.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Yesterday I received a notice that my Windows 7 is not genuine. Below is the reports I run.

The W7 runds my HP desktop I bought 1.5 years ago. Since then I've been receiving updates from Microsoft. I don't remember whether I registered directly with Microsoft or just followed the HP instructions.

About a month ago I started to experience some difficulties with my computer. It would freeze and the Task manager wouldn't be available. The computer would start working after I haphazardly stir cables inside, unhook and hood back the cables connected to the HD.

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

After having previewed my post I can't see how wrap function should work. I didn't edit the report, just pasted it. I hope I did it right.

There was a 5 page thread on trying to downgrade from Ultimate to Win 7 Pro but I thought I should start a new thread. I have a thead on a different forum but was hoping someone here might know the answer.

Users computer says Windows is not genuine, was 7 pro, in Sept 2013 we upgraded to Ultimate to use Bitlocker. System bought from Dell, used Anytime Upgrade to Ultimate. I spent ages on phone with Microsoft today, they have completely agreed both copies are valid, and the computer is saying they're not, in error, they will not admit that it's a Windows Update that caused it likely.

They took over remotely, and 30 minutes later gave up, none of the methods worked. She then advised me to BUY a copy of 8.1 and do a clean install. I don't want 8.1, if we have to reinstall I'd rather do Win 7 Pro again(same valid code) and then up to Ultimate again(same valid code), or go to Win 10 when it comes out. Of course you can't upgrade a "non genuine" copy of Windows 7 to win 10, even if it is in fact genuine.

We don't want to have to reinstall. MS also told me I need to downgrade to Win 7 Pro, put in the code, then upgrade to Ultimate. To do that they said I have to do a clean install. I've seen all the links to Windows Downgrader but we aren't exactly thrilled to be advised to use a 3rd party app. I have not tried the registry suggestions yet, I'm not particularly comfortable dealing with the registry. Two questions.

If MS had been willing to just give me a new U... Read more

Hello fusermarucs and welcome to the forums

Where did you purchase your Windows 7 license?

The license in use is from a MSDN subscription which have very strict usage requirements. Unless you obtained this key from an employer, educational institute or your MSDN/TechNet subscription, your license is counterfeit.

I bought a new Gateway DX4840 from Fry's about 2 years ago with Windows 7 Home Premium. It has the genuine windows stickers on the side with the product keys. It has worked fine until about a month and a half ago when it suddenly said windows is not genuine. I called Microsoft and they walked me through several things and then finally said it was Gateway's fault and I had to contact them to fix it. When I tried to contact Gateway they said my warranty is expired so they will not even talk to me on the phone unless I pay to renew my warranty. So instead I tried to just re-format my computer and re-install from the recovery disk. This worked for awhile and I was able to re-active windows and it said it was genuine again (also did all the MS updates at that time), but then about a week later the error popped up again. So this time I did a full hard disk wipe (before I only reformatted the C drive and left the data partition intact). This time it has been good for a little over two weeks but today again it showed up as not genuine. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Feel like it might be time to move to Linux.

Hello and welcome sudukai Hum pretty ordinary service from M$ and the dealer eh?

If you have the original activation code then you could try this USB Windows 7 Installation Key Drive - Create

If all else fails then personally I would stick a SSD in buy an OEM and just install that but depends on th e budget of course and if the SSD is going to be big enough for what you want it for - but you can back up data to externals to free the SSD up a bit if it gets a bit full.

Can anyone help?

My sister's computer has been running Win7 Ultimate x64 for more than two years. We obtained the copy from Amazon. The copy we have appears in a genuine box, with COA with interwoven holographic strip, and holographic cds.

We went away camping for a week, turned on the computer on return, and the screen went black when the computer did the update check. Error code is 0xC004F200, and optional update delivery no longer works. There is an error code down the right corner, notification that build 7601, windows no longer genuine, etc.

This copy was only ever used once, and on this machine, and obtained for this machine. It has never been installed on anything else.

We checked the product key via computer properties, and it said that the product key suddenly no longer matched the product key on the box/cds. On trying to change it, a dialog box came up and said that the product key has been blacklisted. We researched this, and the net said to contact microsoft.

Can anyone give us help??

BTW, we ran the diagnostic tool as admin.

The Key in use is an MSDN Key from a not-for-resale MSDN account.
Unless you are an MSDN subscriber, you are not entitled to use the Key – and whoever sold it to you was not entitled to do so.
You need to claim an immediate refund from the vendor - do NOT accept the offer of a new key (all they are trying to do is to get past the 45-day claims window or avoid you sending the evidence of their crimes to the authorities)

I got a notice after booting up my windows 7 ultimate today that it is not a legit copy.
It is a retail copy and has been running fine for a few years.
Nothing has been installed in the past few days and the only major thing I've done lately is to
remove a bunch of restore points to clear up a ton of space on my computer.
I'm at a loss at this point.
I've tried entering the product key, but it doesn't activate it.

any ideas??

Please can anyone help me....

I am currently running Windows 7 Professional SP1. However, it's not genuine. (Don't yell at me yet, let me explain)

I had an old computer that was running Windows Vista. It was official and had a Vista activation key. I then purchased a key that let me upgrade from Vista to Windows 7 Home Premium. I then got another upgrade key that upgraded me from HP to Pro. Skip ahead to me screwing up my computer, and not wanting to install from Vista and work my way up, I just installed an unlicensed Windows 7 Pro. Is there a way I can make this copy legal, or will I have to reinstall from Vista and work my way up?

A:Genuine Copy Help

What type of Upgrade did you get for the Home Premium to Pro?,
If if was the full retail package with disks etc, then you can do a repair install using the disks.
If it was an Anytime Upgrade, then you'd have to start with Windows 7 Home Premium, get that activated, and then do the upgrade again.

When I built my last computer, it came with Windows 7 Ultimate as part of the kit. It is an unattended version and does NOT require entering a Product Code.

After installing it is activated. I installed Microsoft Security Essentials as the antivirus. After about 4 or 5 days it comes up and tells me it is NOT a genuine copy of Windows 7.

It is only installed on one pc. It was bought from a reliable company that I have been dealing with for years and they say that the install disk is genuine. The disk is the gold disk with all the holograms just as all Microsoft install disk are.

Is there a way to fix this?

I have a 3-DVD recovery program that I used to reset my PC to factory install. After a while of tweaking with optimizations and stuff, I noticed the disclaimer on my background saying my copy is not genuine

I did many things, like before when I reset my BIOS firmware. Other than that, while tweaking I:

-Fine tuned visual settings for better performance
-Removed unnecessary startup programs
-Disabled/stopped the following services:

Quote:
Block Level Backup Engine Service
Bonjour Service (from iTunes)
Certificate Propagation
Group Policy Client (if not on domain)
HomeGroup Listener
HomeGroup Provider
Offline Files
Portable Device Enumerator Service
Security Center*
Software Protection (make sure you activate Windows first)
SSDP Discovery
Windows Defender*
Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service
Windows Search

The "Software protection" make me most suspicious. I didn't have an issue like this before.

I also Removed the installation and re-install Xubuntu. Also before I even did all this, I wiped my drive to all 0s.

A:Non-genuine copy of Windows 7 :(

Looks like you disabled Software Protection too soon. Windows takes a while to check on activation.

Hi -
I've been running Windows 7 since it was new. Now, out of the blue sky it's got this message in the bottom right corner saying "This copy of Windows is not genuine", and, just above that, "Build 7601".

When I googled this, it appears that there are many "fixes" for this. Some of them give complicated installs and uninstalls of Windows 7 fixes, updates and patches. Sounds like a great way to seriously mess my computer up.

Is there a known, simple fix for this?

Thanks in advance.

Doug

A:This copy of Windows is not genuine

First off, try just shutting windows down from the start button, and choose restart in safe mode. Mess about a bit in case Windows needs a bit of time to look around. I.e. run chkdsk in read-only mode just in case there has been a bit of corruption. Then if all is clear, restart again into normal mode. This has been known to work, and is quick and simple. Luck.

Hi liberts This message appears when the activation of your Windows product fails and therefore it warns you that you are using a non-activated version of Windows, which means it's not "genuine". Now it is suddenly saying it's not genuine and I have to reinstall, I have internet access over a phone line but since I have a mobile I don't pay for a landline on top of that.

Is it normal for people to have to pay extra on top of the originally buying price to reactivate a Vista or is there some way to reactivate without having to pay more money for something already paid for?

This message is to remind people to activate their copy of Windows. You can get more information by visiting: http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/.

This error can be a pain to isolate - it may be quicker/simpler to do a repair install.

Having said that, please first try this.

Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.
At the Command prompt, type
CHKDSK C: /R
and hit the Enter key.
You will be told that the drive is locked, and the CHKDSK will run at the next boot - hit the Y key, and then reboot.
The CHKDSK will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!
After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) - then run the SFC.

SFC -System File Checker - Instructions
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.
At the Command prompt, type
SFC /SCANNOW
and hit the Enter key
Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.

Hi,

Last November I built a new computer. I purchased a copy of Windows 7 Pro from eBay and it came with a product key. I installed the OS using the product key and everything was fine and everything has worked successfully since then.

A few minutes ago, I noticed that there was a message in small type in the lower left corner of my screen. It said:

Windows 7

Build 7601

This copy of Windows is not genuine.

I figured something had temporarily gotten screwed up so I did a restart, expecting the message to go away when the computer started up again. This time a window opened and the message in it told me that my copy of Windows was not genuine and it gave me the option to upgrade to a valid copy, or to "Remind me later".  I clicked Remind Me Later and when the reboot was finished, my wallpaper disappeared and I had a black background. All of my desktop icons still seemed to be there. And the message that I originally got was still posted in the lower right hand corner.

I noticed that there were some updates available, so I went into Windows Update and installed them, hoping that this would fix the problem, but no such luck. Same as before.

Does anyone have any idea why, after 9 months, this message should begin to show up, and how I can get rid of it?

I bought my DELL Studio One computer approx. 10 years ago.  It came with Windows Vista 64 bit (OEM).  WIndows worked fine until one day in October 2015, a pop-up window showed that I had to register my software.  I thought it was rare, but I did it anyway.  To my surprise, the message that appeared said that my windows was not genuine.  I called DELL to see if they can help, and they said that it was probably a malaware, and that they could look it at remotely, but since my warranty expired years ago, they want it money to do it.  I told them no thank you!  Next I called microsoft, explained the problem, they asked me for the key number so they can check it.  The representative said that he checked, and the key I have from DELL, is locked.  I told him what DELL said it could be a malaware, and he said that he didn't think so.  He then tried to sell me windows 10.  I said no of course, because if I paid for window vista when I bought the computer, then I should not be forced to buy any other software.  I have a laptop that came with windows 10, but I don't like it.   Can anyone help?

Also, my computer is running super, super slow.  Everytime I open any program, it freezes. HELP??????

I've had this computer, since probably March of this year. I had it custom built for me. I have had no trouble with it, nor have I had any reason to believe that anything was wrong with it. However, this morning when I started up the computer, it did not boot as it should. Instead a screen appeared reading that "this copy of Windows 7 is not genuine", and I believed it asked if you wanted to make it genuine. I clicked yes and it booted up. I think someone in my household mentioned something about this one time before (about this computer) but I cannot be certain, since I was not here when it happened.

I would like to know if I should be worried at all about this. Does Windows 7 have random times when it verifies its copy? I hope that this DxDiag is the correct information that you need. Maybe you could assist me. Thank you in advanced.

I don't understand why I've recently started getting this message. I upgraded from Vista nearly 5 months ago with no problem. It was activated and still shows this in System.

Getting the Windows 7 not a genuine copy.message and a black screen, about 2 monthe ago after trying Windows 10 tried to go back to Windows 7, P C then refused to work, tried a fresh install with the windows 7 disk that came with the PC (Brand new disk unopened), but that would not work, kept stating....startup repair cannot repair this computer automatically, then tried the Windows 7 disk from daughters laptop and that did the trick, any help how to get rid of this messge.

A:Windows 7 not a genuine copy.

Even if your daughter's laptop...is exactly the same as yours...using that as installation media should provoke that error message.

License mismatch...for OEM system.  The license on the install disk does not match the license for your system.

System manufacturer and model...for each system you have mentioned, please?
