IdeaPad Z510 Wifi options for 802.11ac

Q: IdeaPad Z510 Wifi options for 802.11ac

Hi all, I bought a used Z510 off Ebay a couple of days ago as a small upgrade from my Z500. I have a modded whitelist removed BIOS on the Z500 and use an Intel 7260ac WLAN card. Now just learnt that modded BIOS's cannot be flashed on the Z510 without hardware programming. I'm so annoyed at Lenovo for this selfish restriction and I'd seriously consider ever buying their products again. My question is: are there any 802.11ac WLAN cards that will work on this model? I've looked in the Hardware Maintenance Manual and all I can see are BGN cards, not AC. I've seen a Broadcom AC card mentioned in a thread but the model number was not given. PS: Does anyone know if the screen brightness issue was solved if one uses a FHD screen on a Z500? I know the Intel HD4000 drivers caused the issue but this thread seems to suggest that using a FHD screen reproduces the problem. Thanks a lot!Andrew

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi saumyashah04,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

As per page 27 of the hardware maintenance manual you have a max of 16 GB for the RAM that would increase multi tasking and web use (specs: DDR3-1600/1333MHz SODIMM 2 (max 16 GB) similar to this discussion.

About WLAN upgrade, whitelist cards only offer same BGN features and no 5GHz as this post.

I hope this helps answer your query.

Hi there

This USB Wifi adapter seems to be a MEGA performer --Lovely finally to be able to THINK of getting rid of LAN cables all over the place.

I've no probs with decent HD Movie streaming from a SERVER with one of these (I unplugged the LAN and inserted the USB Wifi adapter into a USB3 slot --note this needs genuine USB3 to work at proper speed). My Home router can deliver 802.11ac so no probs there.

Brilliant piece of kit and NO MORE CABLES !!!!!!. Wifi will soon be able to deliver comparable speeds to LAN especially for HOME networks. !!!

Here's the UK Link but is available in US and Europe. In any case it's delivered (in my case) by Amazon S.A.R.L (Luxembourg) so no tax !!!. even though I ordered from UK web site --they will ship outside UK tax free.

Does anyone know if the Intel 7260HMW 802.11ac mPCI-e card is on the whitelist for the u530. Information on this isn't just scarce... it's nonexistent. I bought this laptop with the intention of upgrading the network card and had never heard of this "whitelist" thing before until I started actively researching the process. Anyway, my system has the 7260bgn 802.11n card. It's an okay card, but I'd like to be able to upgrade eventually. Hopefully Lenovo has tested the ac version of this card already and put it on the whitelist. Does anyone know?

A:IdeaPad u530 upgrade to 802.11ac

Even though the Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260 isn't on the whitelist, you can purchase the Lenovo version of the Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC with the FRU P/N: 04W3814 Here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-wireless-AC-7260-7260HMW-wifi-bluetooth-4-0-adapter-Lenovo-04W3814-/19...You might have a better chance of getting that card to work. No need to waste time buying the generic 7260.HMW since it won't work.

Interestingly, my Ideapad will connect to my dual band router using ac first thing in the morning, but if it ever sleeps/hibernates/reboots during the day it can no longer access ac and I have to reconfigure for 802.11n.  I've downloaded the newest Lenovo adapter driver.  No change.  After some research, I've found some users met success by reverting to earlier versions of the rtlihvs.dll and rtwlane.sys binary files.  I want to try that.  Running on Windows 10 64-bit Realtek 8821AE, I need the rtlihvs.dll 703.1024.401.2013 and rtwlane.sys 2023.4.720.2015 versions.  Can anyone provide those binaries?

Hi there

trying to increase the Wifi speed -- have a decent Wifi adapter with 802.11ac capability - connected to USB 3 port. Speed should be up to 500 - 600 Mbps instead of the 133 Mbps it shows. I KNOW the cable speed via LAN is really fast - so is the built in Wifi router that the cable company have given me not up to the job for Wifi -- I really would like to get rid of loads of LAN cable around the place. That's why I don't like these boxes the ISP issues you with - there's minimal tinkering you can do with them - but you have to use their cable box as a typical Router connects via the phone -- that phone connection system has long since disappeared where I am.

Seems that the cable boxes you get hobbled with by the ISP company - while OK for LAN seem to not be built for the fastest Wifi Protocol.

Anyway round this --- any call to the cable company seems to involve my worst nightmare -- long waits on the phone to some Indian call centre where the staff at the other end haven't a clue what I'm talking about -- all they seem to mouth over and over again - Is your Internet working --YES IT IS but that's not the problem. Grrrhhhhhhh!!!!!!!

A:Oh dear W10 Wifi -- please STOP telling BIG FIBS !!!! (802.11ac)

Yeah, I get this too. Quite often I get no connection over WiFi, despite WiFi working fine on all other devices.

Back in November I posted HERE about uninstalling the WiFi Network Adapter and then letting Windows re-install it, however that only temporarily solved the problem and unfortunately the problem came back again. It's solely a Windows 10 WiFi problem as numerous other devices have no problem, but I don't know how to fix it. I can only assume it's some sort of power saving thing that isn't working properly.

EDIT: Here you go. I can literally make it happen on demand. And yet I'm posting this from another computer on the exact same network that apparently has 'No Internet'.

I purchased Lenovo Ideapad z510, and regardless it's poor battery performance I enjoy it a lot it's amazing, how ever I am having those issues and would highly appreciate some tips or help : Whenever I charge the battery it never reach to 100% and when I take it off the charger and use the battery it keeps saying 99% even with no charger on, and does not show warning messages about low battery like 10 % remaning and 7% remaning .. like it used to do in the past and just shuts down..  I tried the battery gauge reset with the Lenovo's Enery Manager app but no luck!  My other question is there speceifc program that can check the fan status? I am afraid it might not be working proberly like before.  And my last question can I buy only specific parts of the keyboard? my cat removed two buttons of my keyboard and it is too expensive to replace the whole keyboard with the backlit because it's working perfectly fine! Thank you.

I have an ideapad z510 which I have been using without any problems for the last 2 and a half years or so. For the last few weeks, it won't turn on if it's unplugged: the lights under the keyboard turn on for a brief moment, so does the power button, but then it all stops. When I plug it in, the first time I press the button it doesn't turn on either (same behaviour as when unplugged) but on the second attempt it turns on propperly. Once running, I can unplug it and it will keep working propperly.  What could be going wrong? A:ideapad Z510 - turns on only if plugged in

Hi leocasasola,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

You can start with the power check out guide from the hardware manual (page 21-22) testing on the integrity of the AC adapter and operational charging to isolate.

Further steps may require certain tools and skill as board level checking (power board , systemboard ports and chips etc.), so it would be best that you take time to back up your data while you can and check on your local service center.

Hi everyone, I bought my Z510 notebook about 2 years ago and this problem started about 2 weeks ago. A significat drop on performance occured when playing games that previously had no problem to run smoothly. It's quite annoying because now it's impossible for my games to run fluently - instead they almost run frame by frame like I had too weak graphic card.. It happened suddenly - one day it was OK and the other everything went down.I cannot watch YouTube videos in 1080p quality. 720p is max and if I chose higher quality, videos cannot run smoothly - the situation is almost the same like with my games. Video needs to take some time to load for about 2-3 seconds - it also lasts for about 2-3seconds.My notebook also needs much more time to start up and switch off. It used to be a copule of seconds and now I feel like this time has doubled. In general, my PC works slower.I scanned it for viruses a copule of times and even reinstalled Windows. Nothing helped. What is happening? Is it because of the graphic card or is it because built-in technology making the hardware obsolete and forcing buying a new PC? In advance thanks for You help.

Hello everyone, posting this here as well just in case...So just the other day I (finally) upgraded my Lenovo Ideapad Z510 from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10. So far, I'm pretty happy about it, so I'm definitely not regretting it, but there is one thing that it's starting to frustrate me. Basically, when the computer is idle, the screen doesn't turn off after the set amount of time (I have it at 5 minutes on battery, 10 minutes if connected to the AC charger), and the laptop doesn't go to sleep either (it should do so after 10 minutes on battery, 30 minutes with the AC charger). It's really annoying, and I can't figure out why. I have tried to change the settings, disable apps and programs and such, but nothing has solved the problem so far. After looking it up on google, I read about people who had this issue and apparently it was caused by some USB gaming controller connected to the computer. I have no such thing though, the only USB device I have plugged in is my wireless mouse (Logitech). I did try to remove it in case that was the problem, but unfortunately nothing changed: when inactive, the computer still doesn't turn off the screen nor it goes to sleep. I have noticed that if I leave it idle for a while, say 1 or 2 minutes, at one point the brightness decreases slightly for, like, less than a second, and then it goes back to normal, as if someone touched the mouse to "wake up" the laptop (but clearly no one touched anything). Did this ha... I was hesitant to buy other brands before actually purchasing this lenovo laptop. I have a netbook (not a lenovo brand) which I had for 7 years now. I bought my Ideapad Z510 in March 2014, its Windows 8.1. Last few days it shows "battery is weak, needs to be replaced". The battery does not charge, I have to power through AC cable, whenever I disconnect AC, its power is gone. In order to fix the problem, I did the following taks:1. I removed MIcrosoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery, and also Microsoft AC Adapter from Battery option. But after restarting the laptop, those options always reinstalled automatically without notifying. When I open Device Manager, those options are always there though those are removed and laptop is restarted.2. I reset the Gauge, but nothing happened.  I cannot understand why Lenovo provides such a poor quality battery. It is gone after 1 year!!! I cannot believe it! I have 10 years old DELL laptop and still I can use that battery for an hour. But my new Lenovo's battery has gone just after 1 year! Its a shame. Lenovo should respond about explanation that why they provide such poor quality battery. Any idea about resolving it?

A:ideapad Z510 "battery weak" issue

I have the same issue, bought the laptop around march of last year, and started experiencing the problems during the start of June.  I've seen many topics with this issue, with the same response from Mods and Admins. It's basically a substandard battery issue, and the only solution Lenovo gives us is to replace the battery (which are expensive with the relative cost of the laptop), and that doesn't even give us assurance that this issue will not happen again in a year or so. Very disappointing.

i have bought Z510 one year back, within this short time i am facing battery problem.Battery is not charging and the system to be keep in plugged condition at every use.I am a home user and use laptop for limited time.I dont understand why lenova has not provided detachable battery which can be change by user only. Now new battery is not available in the market ,moreover Lenova is simply shedding their responsibility by saying Laptop in not under warranty.I request Lenovo to go for root cause analysis of this problem as hundreds of people are facing same problem in this model.Hope Lenovo would provide some software for attending the problem or atleast give the details of service provider from where battery can be repaired/replaced.
