x230 sound disappears on normal startup, sound only remains when restarted

Q: x230 sound disappears on normal startup, sound only remains when restarted

In the last few weeks I have noticed my laptop sound works on a normal (not restart) boot, but then it disappears. I have to restart the laptop and then it's fine. The next day I boot up from cold, same problem. To clarify, on a normal boot I hear the Windows 7 startup noise, however, shortly after if I play a media file there is no sound. If I restart the laptop, everything is okay. I did install some updates through System Update which I'm guessing caused it. However, I have uninstalled them all now but the problem still exists. I have uninstalled my sound driver and let Windows reinstall it several times- no fix. Does anyone know what this exact issue is? UPDATE: Just realised when I ran System Update it did update some firmware. I wonder if that's what caused it (obviously I couldn't roll that back)

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I usually run my x230 (Win 7 64) power profile for Maximum Performance. I recently changed it to the Maximise Battery Life profile. As soon as I did this the sound stopped working. However, when I change back to the maximum performance profile the sound does NOT return. I need to restart the laptop to get the sound back. Does anyone know what the cause of this is? My drivers are up to date, although Win 7 keeps installing Dolby Advanced Audio v2 instead of v4?

As far as I remember this started to happen few weeks ago, or so. The mouse hangs a second or two, than skips, and after that it works ok for 10-15 minutes. When the mouse hangs there is sometimes a USB plug or unplug sound, but this sound is also hearable sometimes when the mouse doesn't hang. This happens in windows, but also while I play games.
I can hear this sound also when I plug/unplug the monitor cable to/from the graphic card. Also, this sound occures every time when I replace my graphic card driver with newer one, but only fitst time, right after the windows restart.
I know I can turn it off in the system sounds, but that's not the solution I'm looking for.

I checked the cable, and pluged the mouse into another USB port, but that didn't change a thing.

I even reinstalled Windows, but the same thing happens again.

Also, sometimes when i turn on the computer I have no sound. In volume mixer the Speaker disappears and I have only SPDIF out (I don't use it). When I reinstall the drivers it works again for few days.
This happened on my old config, too, but only 2 or 3 times in few years, after the nvidia graphic card update and computer restart.

You can see the full details about my config in system specs.

Regards and sorry for my English.

Hi, I got new problem with my 2nd laptop.
The problem is hard to solve.
My sound card, everything is alright.
I can hear sound very well.
But the problem is, i hear BIOS booting sound-"Beep!"ing instead
of system error sound(like when you type "abcdefg" in run, low piano tone sound comes out with
X mark error msg).
That's all the problem i got.
Only error sound is the problem.
My sound card driver is alright.
How do i solve this problem?

Just what the title says. This happened when I was trying to add a sata dvd writer to the pc. Terrible mobo. Asus p5ne. Three sata ports and I get a blue screen if I try to use one with a sata dvd player. I have two hard drives one the old IDE version with the pins, and then another with sata. I can't boot the PC off of the sata cable HD even though that's the one with VISTA ultimate x64

To my problem because days of bull****tin around trying to get the dvd writer to work, I gave up because a $25 writer isn't worth a whole day of messing around.

Anyways, somewhere along the line something went wrong with my audio. I now I only have backround sound with very faint "talking" in things such as movies. MP3's seem to work fine. I had xvid codecs installed. DIVX codecs installed. I didn't uninstall anything. I checked all the sound settings in the control panel and they show the headphone jacks functioning. I installed updated codecs. Still doesn't work. I guess my next guess is to try and reinstall the mobo sound driver again. Although when I go into Devices and try to update it there, it says I have the most updated version.

Anyone else see this problem.

Sounds like he may have jarred it enough for a cable to come loose. If you feel confident doing so, open up the case and make sure all the cables are plugged in snugly. If you don't, or if the system is still under warranty, take it to a qualified service person.

My computer will randomly stop responding. All graphics freeze, no key commands work, and only the sound remains. I have to hard reboot my computer to get it to respond again and then it's fine. I've been trying to recreate this, but can't find any way of doing so. The only common factor is that the longer my computer is on, the higher the chance is of it happening. All of my drivers for my graphics card are up to date and I have even tried deleting them then reinstalling fresh versions. This also really didn't start happening until I upgraded to Windows 10 if that helps. Specs are as follows:
Edition: Windows 10 Home
Version: 1607
OS Build 14393.693
Graphics Card: NVidia GeForce GTZ 760
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z87X-UDH3
If someone could point me in the right direction or if anyone has had this same kind of problem and knows what is causing it any help would be greatly appreciated. I've have been trying everything I could think of to fix this and nothing has seemed to work. Thanks in advance!

Description of problem: at some point when playing audio, sound will cut out. The levels will still be moving on the mixer, but no sound will come through the speakers or sound jack. It seems that soon after I've closed all sound-producing applications, sound returns. I am 50-75% sure that this is strictly a sound jack issue, as I don't remember being able to reproduce the issue without the sound jack being active when the audio drops out. Frequently, bumping my headphones' cord seems to cause the problem, but other times, the problem seems to happen on a click, a loud sound, or seemingly nothing at all.

I am unsure of how to reliably reproduce the problem, so it is difficult to diagnose whether or not the problem can be reproduced when the sound jack is not active. This isn't common use for me...

Origin: Appeared mid-October, around the same time I had upgraded to the newest drivers (where the old ones were from earlier than May 2013). All were downloaded through the Lenovo website and/or Lenovo's System Update utility, with the exception of the Intel graphics drivers, which were downloaded through the Intel website. At this point, I was running Windows 8, not Windows 8.1. I installed Windows 8.1 recently, and the problem remains.

What I've tried: disabling drivers, reinstalling drivers, disabling sound effects, disabling audio application overrides...

What I haven't tried: rolling back drivers (being honest, I have a bit of trouble believing that this is strictly ... Read more

Hi all, I`ve read here that lot of people got audio problems with their ThinkPads. What helps me in Windows 7 (without reboot) is that you have to set audio output to 44100Hz and 16bit sampling rate. Steps: 1, Right click on speaker icon located on taskbar near clock 2, select "Playback  devices" 3, double click on Speakers 4, select Advanced 5, change Default format to "16bit, 44100   This trick always helped in my case.  Regards,  Jan

A:[Solution] x230 realtek audio - no sound

My Realtek High Definition Audio worked great for several years and then started failing after I updated the BIOS on my X230 to "LENOVO G2ETA5WW (2.65), 9/17/2015 on my computer running Microsoft Windows 7 Professional version 6.1.7601 Service Pack 1 Buiold 7601.  The Realtek driver is version dated 9/13/2013. Now every time I boot I must disable, then enable the Realtek HD Sound in Device Manager before any music or video file will play longer than a few seconds. I tried Jan's suggestion and unfortunately it did not work for me. After changing the speakers from ?24 bit, 48000 Hz (Studio Quality)? to ?16 bit, 44100 Hz (CD Quality)? and selecting ?Test?, I get a warning screen saying ?Device in Use ? The device is being used by another application. If you continue, that application may stop working.  Do you want to continue?? If I select ?Yes? then I get an error message saying ?Error! Failed to play test tone.?Instead, if I simply select ?OK? after the switch to ?16 bit, 44100 Hz (CD Quality)?, I get an error message saying ?Error! Formant not supported by the device.? Anyone have any ideas? (I will try also posting this in a new post to get a little more exposure.)

I've been having this problem, no windows startup music or sound on youtube or myspace. I've tried a couple of things, but still no sound. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling flash player, but that didn't help. I tried cleaning the registry also, but maybe didn't do that correctly, so it didn't help either. From one day to another the sounds stopped playing, and I haven't been able to figure out what the problem is. On other forums I found that some pple just added wavemapper to driver 32 in the registry editor (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/microsoft/Windows NT/Current Version/Drivers32), but this wavemapper is in my list, and still there is no sound. Also installed k-lite full pack and still, no sound. And seems like it's just a flash player problem, because i can play videoa with sound with quicktime on websites
I hope someone can help!

My sound keeps 'disappearing' for no reason. When the machine first boots, everything works, but after a while there is no sound. Device manager always shows a splat on 'Microsoft Kernel Wave Audio Mixer' and rebooting solves the problem. But it gets extremely irritating. Even adter a fresh boot, if I leave the machine for some time and check it later, the sound is gone. The properties of the splat inform me that Windows cannot load the device driver; but why does it 'unload', even if the machine is not used?
The driver is kmixer.sys, which is dated 2001, even on XP sp2.

Even changing sound cards does not solve the problem. Initially I was using the sound hardware on my motherboard, but as an experiment I disabled that in the BIOS and installed a PCI sound card. Didn't help.

I'm getting a fairly regular scenario where there is no sound whatsoever when XP (SP2) starts. I also loose sound after Windows starts (log-on theme OK) after quite some time, and then sometimes it returns for no apparent reason.

I should mention I have a dual-boot system with XP and Vista HP (with XP as the default) and it has happened on both.

I've checked all my connections and they're fine. Is there a way to re-initialise the soundcard (Soundblaster X-Fi), is Windows loosing it's address somehow, I'm puzzled.

I hope someone can help.

A:Sound disappears

Since it happens on both boots of the OS I would say it should be a problem with the sound card. I doubt it is a driver issue because it would be really odd that the drivers would go bad on both boots.

We will try this just to cover the driver issue of possibly being bad on both boots. There is a special driver disk that comes with the recovery disk set or with the computer that is loaded with all of the drivers that are initially needed for the computer to run these drivers are the chipset, buss, audio, video, networking and others. If you do not have this disk the drivers can be downloaded thru either the manufacturers web site for either the computer or the motherboard manufacturer. I would suggest downloading the proper one's for the components in your computer and running them for each OS installed ont he computer.

If this does not work I would install a new sound card, if the sound card on the computer is built into the motherboard then it will be shut-off when the new one is added or you can or might be able to shut-off in BIOS.

I have been having this problem for over 2 years and have never been able to figure out what the problem is. If I start up my Windows8 laptop and use something that uses sound right away, I'm fine. If I don't get around to using my sound until several minutes later, there is no sound and when I investigate it says another application is already using the sound, but I can never figure out what application has hijacked my sound. I thought I had solved the problem last night when I uninstalled the sound drivers. I expected to notified that new hardware had been found when I rebooted the computer, but I was not so notified. Instead, my sound worked and even though I left my sound alone for an hour, I still had sound after an hour. When I checked, it showed different items under the sound (device manager) than what I had uninstalled.
I was disappointed this morning to learn that once again, if I did not use sound right away after starting my laptop, I had none. I checked device manager and still had the same items under sound as when I had shut my computer down the previous evening. I'm thinking of uninstalling these drivers and see what I get when I reboot, but not sure if it will help or if it's the right thing to do. Anyone else experience this sound hijacking that I am?

Hi, Very new to posting threads or blogging and also know NOTHING about PC's so please be gentle with me!

I have got a new Dell Studio xps 7100 , Windows 7 64 bit. I spent the best part of Saturday re-installing all my itunes library from disc's. When finished i thought i'd better check that everything was OK and therefore 'clicked' on a dozen or so tracks and films at random. Everything seemed fine and then the sound went! The progress bar was still moving / or the film was still playing but no sound. At first i thought i must have a corrupt file so i tried opening track via Windows media player, at first OK but on one track the same thing happened. Now i went into panic mode thinking that all the files were corrupt! I uninstalled and re-installed itunes 3 times, spoke to itunes support for an hour. I went onto istore and previewed a song (therefore not in my files) and the same thing happened. To test it once more, i've just purchased a song and downloaded it from istore and the same thing, the progress bar moves but no sound!

Any thoughts

I have a strange problem. This is a Compaq EVO with a SoundMax system running W2K Pro.
Sometimes, the sound partially disappears. Meaning, applications like Outlook and QuickBooks stop playing their usual sound. However, you can still play a wav file with Media Player. Also, the sound scheme changes from Windows Default to nothing. And some of the sounds that appear there can be played, but they stay like continuously playing, meaning that the play/stop toggle button does not go back to the triangle (play) but stays a square (stop).

Any clues?

I've got onboard sound using the Realtek AC97 driver. I have normal sound after the boot and for a variable period afterward, but eventually the sound stops and clicking on the voulme control icon gets me a "no mixer devices available" error.
All drivers report normal and working in the device manager but anything I try to do that requires sound fails with "no driver" or "no sound device" error.
I did a full virus scan and re-installed an up-to-date AC97 driver.
When I shut down to reboot, I get the Windows shut-down chord and then normal sound again for a period after the boot.

A:Sound driver disappears

If you still get that driver error, then one of the drivers must be faulty. That should (as a rule) be reported in the Device Manager, but it is possible that it would not be. If it were mine, I would try two things.

First, I would update all drivers under the Sound heading and see if that helps. If not, then go to the next step.

My next option would be to delete all the options that have drivers under that heading and then reload the sound drivers from the MOTHERBOARD CD,

If they still don't work, then try your newest and best drivers that you have already downloaded.

Intermittently the sound on my PC (XP) disappears. When I start Media Player, it tells me there is a problem with my device or it doesn't exist.

I does not sound like a driver problem and we are wondering if it is a loose cable from the monitor to the computer. The webcam is integrated on the monitor. Anyone have any ideas?

As a side note, we got the webcam and audio back last time from a system restore, but we can't keep doing this all the time.

I can restart with them plugged in, and it will show up, but obviously this is annoying, and I can't figure out how to get it to just show up. Anyone know anything about this?

A:Sound just completely disappears but Headphones work?

The first thing I see is you have "High Definition Audio" device which suggests you just have the basic function Windows installed audio driver and not the correct RealTek audio driver from Gigabyte.

If this is the case, the first thing to do is install the Gigabyte provided sound driver, which is a full feature driver. The vendor's driver is the preferred sound driver. This may not fix the problem, but its a needed start.

I installed Windows 7 (x86 so x32 for instalations) recently and from beggining I had problems with sound. After installing windows all other drivers were ok(video, motherboard, ethernet) but there were no sound. Windows showed that there is sound drivers instaled S/pdif(or something like that) and as I turned music on bars moved, but there was no sound from speakers. I havent muted anything by myself and wtf I just installed win it shouldnt be mutted anyway.

So I installed realtek newest audio High definition drivers which is my integrated sound card compatable with, restarted PC and vualia it worked. New icon appeared, I heard sound from music/movies. But then I shutted down my pc, turned it in couple of hours and they werent there anymore> Windows showed that there are no outputs or smth, red cross were on sound sign, then installed default drivers who were at the begging then I installed it. And bam I can't hear sound again. I read that problem might be when windows sended updates it sends realtek lan instead of sound or smth like that. And I found it in update history that win send realtek lan, but I dont know if disabling it could solve the problem. Do you guys have any Idea?

S/PDIF -> Sony/Panasonic Digital Interface is to connect to an external receiver via optical cable.

Make sure you have your speakers plugged in properly and select Speakers as your default output, unless you actually have the PC connected to an external receiver via optical cable.

Hello! My T420 have latest BIOS, latest Windows 10 updates and drivers, Ubuntu 16.04 LTS kernel and updates. Randomly my sound output is disappeared :Windows 10, there is a red cross on volume gauge, clicking on it calls standard wizard of resolving drivers problems, it's doing some magic and asks for reboot. After reboot all works fine, but after sleep, reboot or shutdown it occurs again.in Ubuntu in sound manager sound output reverts into fictive output, no sound, no volume meter, in lspci device list there is no intel hda output device. After several reset, it dissappears and also all works fine but again, same as in windows it can occurs again. Please help me, thanks in advance.

Hi there,

Usually, I've been able to troubleshoot my PC woes and worries using my dear friend Google and/or some logic thinking. But there's something "strange" going on with my mediacenter-PC. As I've looked on these forums but couldn't find a solution (and to be honest : I'm baffled by this) : the following :

I was using Windows XP on my mediacenter until 2 weeks ago. No problems during playback whatsoever... Upgraded this system with Windows 7 recently, installed the Kazaa Lite Codec Pack + XBMC and experienced no problems during the installation. Upgraded the video (Nvidia 9600GT) and the audio drivers (provided on Gigabyte's site) and noticed during playback that the sound goes "off" after 15 minutes. It 'disappears' for 2 seconds and comes back again.

My setup : the motherboard : GA-MA74GM-S2H -> this is connected with an S/PDIF cable to my audio system (JVC amplifier) and the symptoms I see are :
- sound goes off
- my amplifier shows "Linear PCM" for a second
- the sound comes back and continues after 2 seconds

So, reinstalled Windows 7 again, didn't install any updates or extra drivers for the soundcard (just the Kazaa codec pack) and tried again with Media Player Classic (included in the codec pack) > same problem again.

Might anyone have any suggestions?
thanks a lot!

PS : I've included a screenshot of my device manager, the current sound properties and [not sure if this is related], the volume control options.

A:Sound 'disappears' after 15 minutes and returns 2 seconds later

I would start with a clean install of Win 7, motherboard chipset drivers and system device drivers (and install Windows 7 specific drivers). DO NOT install any additional software such as the referenced codec pack. Use the built in Windows Media Player and see if works OK or if you have problems. If it works OK, then start adding wthatever software you want, one program at a time and then check to see if it works OK before adding anything else.

Also, as you upgraded from XP, how much memory do you have? You need a minimum of 2GB of RAM for Win 7 and as you have the 64 bit version I would go with a minimum of 4GB.

I have been having sound problems for about three days now.

The problem started as:
Switched on Windows XP Pro SP3 partition (at that point I was dual booting with Ubuntu 11.04) on start-up I got an error message saying "Sonic Focus driver must be loaded for this application to work". This was meaningless to me until I realised that there was no sound and no sound card in Device Manager>Sound Video and Game Controllers.

So I googled and I found a guide on an Intel page about reinstalling the audio driver from disc. I can't find that page now but it was about uninstalling the software via Add/Remove Programs, disabling audio in the bios and reinstalling from CD. I attempted this but got an error message "Device Object not present, restart the system and run setup again" and it wouldn't install. I got mad thinking I had done something wrong with the entire Windows installation and decided to do a fresh install.

On fresh install from a XP Pro SP2 disc.

I switched off audio at the bios prior to the Windows Install and then installed the device drivers from the Intel DQ965COE (D75503-001) disc in the following order:
1. Chipset INF [INF_ALLOS_8.0.1.1002_PC]
2. Audio [5.10.5143_XP32_XP64_MCE_v1]
3. LAN [LAN_11.1_ALLOS_PV]
4. Video and something else through Device Manager

On attempting to install the Audio driver I got the same error message as last time: "Device Object not present, restart the system and run setup again". I then trie... Read more

A:Sound disappears when computer is unplugged from electric supply.

Sorry about posting in the wrong forum I didn't see the AV forum.

I thought I should post the fix I have found. I've been trawling google for the various error messages and somehow happened upon this page: http://forums.cnet.com/7723-6122_102-340889.html While I was not getting a "code 10" error I thought I'd try it and it worked!

This is what I did:
Removed the Audigy 2 card, switched on and went to "C:\Program Files\IDT\WDM" and double clicked on suhlp.exe and selected "run anyway" when it said a disc was missing from the D:\ drive. Shutdown and switched on. It worked! I've unplugged twice and it is still working. I wonder if doing this would have solved the original error message "Sonic Focus driver must be loaded for this application to work"...

Hi Guys,
New laptop Dell Inspiron 13 5368 2-in-1 was bought in November 2016.
It worked fine during certain period; however, rather weird issue with sound started occurring. It disappears randomly. For example, sound can disappear during Skype call (the main purpose of laptop usage). It disappears almost completely; it is very hard to hear something. In the event of regular Skype call (when sound is present), you can hear your own voice with some extra noise.
Several scenarios were performed:
1) Reinstalled drivers from official Dell website;
2) Unchecked the “Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device” (speakers -> properties -> advanced)
3) Selected “do nothing” in Sounds -> Communications
4) Driver was changed to Realtek High Definition Audio Driver from Dell website
5) Driver was changed to standard Microsoft one
Reinstalled drivers in different order

1) Reinstalled Windows 10 using the recovery disk from Dell support website
2) Installed drivers according to the “Installation order” section at http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/product-support/product/inspiron-13-5368-2-in-1-laptop/drivers/advanced
Sound disappearing frequency is random, from one week to 1.5 months.
Then sound can appear in one of the following cases:
1)     By itself, without any action
2)     Reboot
3)     Reinstalling audio drivers
4) &nbs... Read more

The computer is a Pentium D, 3.0Ghz, 1Gig Ram, 250Gig HDD, Windows Media Center, Video - Radeon X1300, 512Mb

I have been experiencing OE randomly crashing when I click on Create a new Message. What in fact happens is that OE disappears from the screen but remains running in the background. I can see msimn.exe in Task Manager / Processes. The only way around this is to restart the machine.

The machine and memory tested as having no errors at the retailer that it
was purchased from.

I have just done a chkdsk and there were no errors found.

I have tried the following to relieve it:

 Update Windows Media Center
 Deleted the identities and recreated them importing the mail and
address books
 Uninstalled IE7 and reinstalled IE6
o Deleted the identities and recreated them importing the mail and
address books
 Update the computer?s BIOS
 Reformat the HDD and reinstall Media Center
o Reinstall all programs
o Update
? Create the identities and import the mail and address books
? Delete the identities and recreate them without importing the old mail and address books

In spite of all of this, it still randomly crashes when creating a new message

I am hopeful that someone can tell me what?s wrong

Thanks in advance

We have a number of Windows 7 installations (Enterprise, 32 bit, with German language pack). ONE of the users (on a Dell Latitude E4300) has the problem that after some time, the task bar disappears, but the start button remains on the screen (and continues to function):

Using Task Manager to kill explorer.exe and restart it solves the problem for a while.

I usually run my x230 (Win 7 64) power profile for Maximum Performance. I recently changed it to the Maximize Battery Life profile. UPDATE: I uninstalled the Realtek High Definition Audio Driver whilst in "Maximize Battery Life", shut down, turned back on and this fixed the sound. So the problem seems to be the Realtek driver. I updated the driver to the latest one from the Realtek website but the problem still exists. What can I do to keep the audio whilst in Maximize Battery Life profile?
