Attempt to Open Programs Leads to Failure to Open or Unresponsive Message

Q: Attempt to Open Programs Leads to Failure to Open or Unresponsive Message

I have noticed that several programs, such as Windows Photo Viewer, Windows Media Player, Quicktime Player, and VLC Player will either not open or automatically bring up the "... is not responding." message.

Likewise, the Quicktime, MS Silverlight, and Adobe Flashplayer plug-ins won't operate correctly during certain instances -- the first 2 more so.

I've never come across such an issue, but first thought it was the result of faulty updates of out the many updates this thing goes through. But now, I'm convinced that is not the case.

Any and all assistance would be much appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I downloaded a file from a bit torrent site and installed it. The file was for autocad 2006 and i thought it was safe (at least i think that was when the problem started)Now I cannot open any programs or even get my computer to start in safe mode.Norton keeps telling me that attempts are happening and giving me an address (ip addresss and net address) and telling me the attempt was blocked. This attempt happens over and over about every 5 minutes.I downloaded hijack this and deleted some files and may have deleted some that shouldn't have been deleted.I don't know if this is a trojan, malware, or spywarewhen I get online it is through norton that i can access it bc opera, firefox, and explorer won't come up.Each time i try to open a file I get an error message asking me which program to use to open it. Also, I can open files if i do so as an administrator. Can someone tell me what this might be or what to look for?ThanksJustin I am not sure if I should put a log file here but in case it is ok to post one it is attached.have run a few cleanup programs and detected a trojan and removed it by running in safe mode and running nortonI cannot run anything from my desktop and have to open everything by running it as an administrator.I also cannot run combofix because i initialize as an administrator then I get the popup that asks me over and over which program to open it with in an endles loop.I can run new logs but need to know what to do first.EDIT: Posts merged ~BP

Hello MikeMcSomething and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. The first thing we need to do is update the operating system.Your operating system is extremely out of date. By not keeping the OS updated the computer is vulnerable to every infection on the net and in emails today and trying to repair an unpatched system is virtually impossible. For update purposes, Microsoft has even stopped supporting a system that is this far out of date. Go to the Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1.a site and install Service Pack 1a. Once that is done, go back to the Windows Update site and install all available Critical Updates but do not install SP2 at this time. This will patch the system with the most current security fixes and plug all the known holes which are present on this system. If you are not on a broadband connection the Service Pack can be obtained from Microsoft for a nominal shipping fee. After all of the updates have been performed post a new HijackThis log back here using the Add Reply button and I will review it when it comes in.Cheers.OT

I see my text in teh background, however I can't access it because the popup box is in the way.

I'm running it off a local hard drive.

Does anyone know how I can repair this ? It's a very important document.

Normally I feel like I am able to ward off viruses on my own but this time I feel like I have encountered something much more serious than something I can take on alone, so any help would be much appreciated!

System:
Dell Studio 17
Windows 7 64bit (SP1) (problem is with Windows partition)
Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

Problem Summary:
-Had a virus popup telling me I had to pay X dollars. Immediately closed browser and restarted computer.
-Scanned with Malwarebytes. Results found 4 threats, all of which I selected to remove.
-Restarted computer, after which I am now unable to open virtually any programs or files. Behaves like an account permissions issue
-Tried a system restore in safe mode to the most recent time when everything was working, but this did not solve problem

Detailed Description:
The other day I got one of those popups telling me that "I had been accused of illegal browing activity" or something, which I had not been. It said that in order to avoid dealing with the law, I had to pay so much money. I restarted my computer and planned on removing the virus.

After restarting I was still able to open files and programs; in fact I was a little behind on my firewall updates (mistake, I know) so I decided to update that first. Updated, restarted, everything was fine.

Then I ran a Malwarebytes full scan which detected 4 threats. I don't remembrer the names, but two were registry problems, one... Read more

When one shuts down the computer, many times a message shows up saying a program is still open and a question if you want to force shutdown or cancel (i think).
The message never stays long enough to even fully read the message, but I would like the option to control that.

How to I extend the time of the message or perhaps actually wait for me to decide?

A:message on shutdown re open programs

As far as I know, there is no option to do what you are asking...If it is an application hanging up, the option to force a restart will pause until you select a forced restart, otherwise there will be little or no delay in shutting down automatically... Hope this helps...

Hello, please help somebody!

I'm being faced with an aggrovating problem. On most things i try to open, I'm getting a nasty error message. It's a big deal .

"this service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or has no enabled devices associated with it."

This is happening with most programs - although weirdly a few still work - IE, Firefox and Windows Live messenger - along with others. But a lot don't open and just give me that message.

I have no idea what this means, or what's going on. I'm sorta tech sabby so give me directions maybe? NOTE: I can't open services.msc because that ALSO comes up with the error.

Help would be SOOO much appreciated!!! Thanks in advance - everyone.

Insert Microsoft XP Professional disk and click OK.

I do not have the disk- my computer came with XP and there was no installation disk. Any ideas on how to fix this annoying issue?

Thanks

A:Error message when I open any microsoft xp programs

Hello squirtle98

This is a Windows Installer error. The way to fix it is to use the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility to remove the installation files for Office.
Problem is that you must then reinstall Office and you do not have the Office installation CD.

If everything is working when you cancel the installation box, I think you will just have to live with the problem.

Two days ago my laptop unexpectedly shut off. Ever since then i get the windows error recovery message whenever i start up windows. I choose to start windows normally instead of going into safe mode. Once my desktop loads, i try clicking on programs that keep on failing to load. After 10 or more minutes i finally get them open. The screen also blacks out and comes back. The network icon sometimes shows that the computer is connected to the ethernet code when its not and it also shows that the internet is not connected or on when it is. The programs also become unresponsive alot , causing me to restart. What should i do ? Ive been experiencing this problem for 2 days.

A:Windows error recovery message & programs take too long to open?

Welcome to the forums,

Why did the computer shut off unexpectedly, did the power in your house go out? was the computer running MS updates at the time of a power failure or any other updates for any programs you have installed on the computer?

When the power goes out unexpectedly it can cause corrutions of the files, next time you get the error recovery message choose repair the computer, this choice will automatically try to fix errors. After choosing repair the computer, the computer might ask a couple of things; if the option comes up please choose to fix errors that are found and to recover bad sectors on the disk.

Save the attached file to the desktop
Right click it and select "rename"
Rename it to: exefile.reg (instead of: exefile.reg.txt)
Then double click it to merge with the registry.

A reboot might be required for changes to take effect.
Hopefully, file extensions aren't hidden, and if they are, you can get into Folder Options > View tab to uncheck "hide extensions for known file types". I'm also hoping that .reg file association isn't also messed up, and that the default action is still "merge".
If you can now open EXE files, please post a HijackThis log.
EDIT: Hmm, it also sounds like .cpl (control panel extension) association is messed up as well.

Both programs open ok (under 2 seconds), so no problems there.

The problem is opening the program by means of opening a document. It takes about 1 minute

Exactly the same thing with both Word and Excel.

Has anyone got a solution? Surely there must be a quick little registry tweak to sort this out?

Recently, some virus known as Windows Defender 2010 got onto my computer and tried to get me to buy it by convincing me my computer was full of viruses. I found out it was a virus and deleted it by using a program called SUPERAntispyware Free Edition.

1) After shutting down my computer and restarting, I find that this fake 'Windows Defender' is gone. But now whenever I try to open ANY program, the "Open With" box opens and I HAVE TO 'find' the program. Once I select it, THEN it will open - but if I close that program and try to open it again, I have to go through the SAME process!

2) Not only that, but that tick box under where you choose a program; "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file", is un-ticked and greyed out so that I can't tick it so I don't have to go through the process of finding that program again. Come to think of it, that tick box was never greyed out until the "Open With" box started showing every time I tried to open any program.

I have tried using System Restore but even that failed to help. This is really getting on my nerves and help would be GREATLY appreciated.

By the way, I'm on VISTA (Ultimate, I think). Thanks for your time.

P.S. If I can fix these problems without having to download some type of program, it would be preferred.f

A:[SOLVED] Please Help - Every program opened leads to 'Open With' box

-- Bump --
Come on guys, even forwarding me to someone who can help would be great if no advice can be given.

I know that the greyed out "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" has been answered before. But I have not seen it resolved for VISTA, and not on such a magnitude that EVERY programs' option of this has been 'greyed out'. If this fixable problem is resolved, I really shouldn't have much of a problem with the rest.

Forgive me for the double-post. :-]

A:My virus wont let me open my antivirus software, or open certain programs.

Not knowing what OS you're using makes this possibly not applicable, but if it's Windows 10:

An offline scan, if you can trigger it, runs before the OS is loaded and can nuke things that cannot be touched once the OS is loaded and the virus/malware is active.

I had XP Antivirus 2012 on my computer initially, and was able to fix it by following directions. However, then another "Security Protection" virus got onto the computer. I followed all directions from the bleepingcomputer.com tutorial, but it still did not fix the problem. When I start the computer and it loads normally lots and lots of blank windows pop up repeatedly on the desktop. Whenever I try to start any program an error message pops up saying that some part of a file is missing, no matter what program I try to open.

I'm having trouble on my desktop, I'm currently using windows 7. I cannot run any programs on my computer including MBAM and Super anti spyware. When i attempt to open up a program such as MBAM, it opens up a view download window. I have the option to run or save the program; however, when i click run for example it quickly opens up an internet explorer page and closes it and nothing happens. I have access to the internet and everything but there is another big catch. This only happens on one user... The other user has no problems i can access all files, programs etc..

I've ran rkill but it says sed.exe cannot read C:\users\---\appdata\local\temp\rks1.log no such file or directory

I ran malwarebytes and removed 5 unwanted files

I've also ran superantispyware which removed about 120 tracker cookies.

Still having the same problem i don't know what else to do please help =/

Hi Reza.Deabae,

I'm not understanding the issue to 100%. What application are you trying to open, and what happens when you do? Or are you saying that whatever application you open Windows Media Player opens?

Could you please try to boot into Safemode (Press F8 during startup) and see if the problem persists there.

It does sound like your filetype associations has been screwed up, either by a system fault or a malware.

I have a fairly new HP Desktop PC. I'm running Windows 7 Home 64-bit SP1. Yesterday I noticed that iTunes won't open when I double-click on the shortcut icon on my desktop. I restarted my computer, same issue. I restarted in Safe Mode, same issue. I did not uninstall/reinstall because I also can't open my Spybot-SD. Same thing happens. The process is listed in Task Manager, but the programs just don't open. I have not tried uninstalling/reinstalling the programs because I'm pretty sure it won't help. I tried doing a System Restore back to early February. The System Restore was successful but the problem persists. Also, Windows Media Player opens, but it opens weird, wherein it freezes on a white square for a few minutes before finally loading. Also, my DVD burning software, DVD Flick, opens but first it freezes on a yellow square. It's hard to Google this problem because of all the programs involved, and I'm sure there are more programs that won't open that I'm just not aware of yet. I didn't do anything that I can think of that could've caused the problem (and if I had, the system restore would've fixed it). So I scanned my PC for viruses with Symantec and I also scanned for malware with Microsoft Security Essentials and both scans came up clean. Not being able to use iTunes presents a problem because I can't update my phone or make changes to my phone at all.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks... Read more

I used registry mechanic and it said that there were 3 shortcut errors with notepad so I fixed them. Then notepad was gone from my shortcuts in the start menu and in the quick view bar. I then restored those entries from the backup I made with registry mechanic. That didnt work so I added the shortcuts again to the start menu and to the quickview bar. Now when I try to open lets say c:\windows\system32/drivers/etc/hosts I cant open it with notepad. I double click it and choose select a program from the list. Notepad used to be one of the choices but now its not. I go to browse then I go to c:\windows and select notepad.exe. Then it comes back to the screen with the list of programs again and it wont let me use notepad. I want to use notepad for this and other programs how do I fix this.

Hi. . .

Download the attached zip file and extract the 2 files in to to your desktop. Go to desktop & RIGHT-CLICK on the batch file and select Run as Administrator. This will copy the mini-kernel memory dump files that were generated from the BSODs and gather necessary system and driver information for me in order to process the dump files.

The batch job will take several minutes to run - you can see the status on the screen that comes up - please don't touch any keys while it is running. When finished, go to your documents folder where you will find a new folder named TSF_Vista_Support_10-07-08.

Zip it up and attach to your next post. Please note that you must run the batch file using the right-click/run as admin or it will not run properly.

Any ? - please let me know.

Here is what happened. I was in the middle of downloading music using mediafire. I was downloading several songs and I searched in google and clicked on a link that was not mediafire on accident. After opening that page, my computer seemed to get a virus or something. I was seeing pop-ups that were fake "windows" screens that were titled 'Win 7' and it said that I had a virus and that I should buy/download some anti-virus program immediately. I have been affected by a similar virus before and followed some steps I found online and ultimately used a free version of "Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware" to remove that virus. So when this happened I used the Malwarebyte again and it found 7 viruses and I think that they were all trojans. I went to the see results page and removed them all, and it said in order to remove these a restart is required. So I restarted my computer. After restarting, I logged in and everything seemed to be working fine. However when I went to open Internet Explorer, I was prompted by a screen titled Open With. It said "choose the program you want to use to open this file:" then "File: iexplore.exe" inside the form it listed under Recommended Programs 'Internet Explorer Microsoft Corporation'. There was nothing listed under other programs. I decided to click on the Internet explorer link. When I did, it temporarily (only for a spilt second) opened the browser which was a blank page. Hi all, first time poster\long time reader and enthusiast.

I am a PC tech for a large corporate network, and one of our users called in to say that she suddenly could not open Excel files. I connected to her machine and found that I can open excel documents from the desktop icons, as well as through windows explorer, but the issue exists as soon as you select "open" from the File menu in excel. When you attempt to open a document that way, the standard "Microsoft Office Excel has encountered a problem and needs to close" message, also giving the option to save work and re-start excel.

She is running office 2003 professional SP2 on a dell optiplex gx280 with 256 meg of ram. She's never had an issue in the past, and has not installed any new software recently, so no conflicts are likely, this is just a sudden issue.

I attempted a repair installation, a complete uninstall\reinstall, and applied all available updates from the Microsoft website, and nothing has solved the problem.

Hopefully you guys can help!

Thanks in advance

I have a user trying to user clip art in Microsoft Word 2004 for MAC. Every time they navigate to: Insert > Picture > From ClipArt, they get the following error message:

"Attempt to open database file ClipArt failed"

What's funny is that when they click on "OK" for that error message it still brings up ClipArt and allows them to insert ClipArt, so that tells me it has been installed.

Well, I'll give a few more details. It is actually a friend's computer, which initially had Forefront Client Security from Microsoft. I removed that and tried to install a trial version of ESET, which did not install. He had Malwarebytes from before and I ran a scan in Safe-mode. It detected 4 items, which I made it remove. The actual problem is that I cannot open the main items in the control panel. I can still uninstall program from the button in My Computer, but cannot open the Action Center, Network and Sharing Center...you get the tone. The Security service is stopped and my explorer.exe restarts everytime I try to start it. And there is a suspicious 'Windows Update' icon in the notification tray, which disappears as soon as I hover my mouse over it. I was suggested to run a scan using  http://www.freedrweb.com/cureit/?lng=en, which yielded 4 results. I removed all of them, but the problem persists. Please help me. I'm a student and about 30-40 of us have this problem.

Hey I'll just like to say I'm new here, also I would like to state I'm no nood but also no guru at all of this, any help is appreciated.

My problem is that when I run windows 7 Ultimate (64x) on my 4gb of ram and a fairly descent graphic family chip-set, is that when I boot up the left and right mouse buttons swap their rolls, e.g right click = left click and vise versa, the way I have found to sort this out is to log on, then log off and then log back on again, simple but annoying, also when I sort the mouse buttons out I will just be using my broswer Mozilla Arora beta 9.0sa and then sundenly the whole system will become unresponsive apart from the browser Aurora, this happens after about 10 minutes, the way I have found out how to temporarily fix this is to press CTRL+ALT+DLT and start the Task manager select the following application I would like to run and then press "switch to" button, the system is from there on responsive until 5 or so minutes have passed then everything but the open application will become unresponsive. The problem still happens on any program I use not just the browser.

Any idea's on what may be causing this, any help or advice will be greatly appreciated thanks.
