hijacked pages, system stops responding, pages won't load

Q: hijacked pages, system stops responding, pages won't load

hello all

i have started noticing "hijacked pages,"

and that (so far, only when using "chrome," which is outdated - NOT by choice but because i am stuck with windows vista and GOOGLE will not longer support it...),

sometimes chrome will "hang" when attempting to perform operations such as "clear browsing data,

and then if i attempt to close chrome, it will make it so that system processes(?) such as my toolbar, ctrl+alt+del/task mgr, and restart will not work, forcing me to need to manually power off my computer,

and now as of today, most pages are not loading ("err_connection_failed" in chrome, but ALSO IN FIREFOX a lot of pictures in pages are not loading),

so i fear i have malware...

okay, here is the sysinfo readout:

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Whenever i open firefox and try to go certain sites it does not load. I am only able to go google.com quickly. Every other site either keeps loading or when it does load it does not load properly. Sometimes i will get a message that firefox has stopped working and be forced to close firefox.

The same problem occurs when i try to use IE.

i have created a new profile in firefox and deleted all my cache and temporary files. None of it has helped.

i called dell and they said it might be a virus or malware. They wanted me to pay additional for them to find out but i declined.

i hope someone on here can help because i have not been able to use my computer all day.

I suppose the title says it all, my computer has some sort of infection where every search in google in both firefox and internet explorer redirect the searches to random pages. Additionally, typing in certain addresses simply won't load where I know the page should work, such as certain links on microsoft.com. Furthermore, I have enabled Automatic Updates and it tells me that it is not enabled even though it clearly is in the settings and going to the update page through internet explorer simply does not work. I have read through various other forums here at bleepingcomputer.com and followed their instructions but nothing has fixed the problem so I figured I'd post as well and start fresh. A huge thanks in advance to whomever is able to help me out. So, where do I begin?

Hi newbie here so go easy on me

My mum has a realtively newly built PC (about 2 weeks old), and has XP Professional installed along with Norton Antivirus 2003.

She is using dial-up internet with an external modem, and although her default homepage (bbc) loads straight away after that browsing becomes progressively slower and slower. Some pages do not load up at all after a while and she is forced to turn off her connection and try again. She cannot access any secure sites at all (for her internet banking and buying things). She has cleared her cache to no avail.

I have been told to see if a firewall is blocking secure ports 443, 84 and/or 8443. I'm not sure how to check that? I'm not even sure she has a firewall installed at all?

Should she try Mozilla Firefox? Should I install Norton?

I've checked her dialup internet provided (lineone/tiscali) and there appears to be no problems?

There are twenty or thirty sites I visit regularly.

Recently I've been having some problems. Some sites I can visit like normal, but some sites I can't. I get "cannot find server" errors.

I cannot visit 9/10 websites on the internet because of this.

I have run Search & Destroy, Spyware Doctor, HouseCall, HijackThis, and the virus scanner on pcpitstop.com. I've run some of those in Safe Mode as well.

I cannot ping a website with cmd, but if someone else gives me the ip for a site url I can't visit, and i put the ip in the address bar, it will work like normal.

I've tried using IE and FireFox. I'm currently running FireFox (on XP) because I'm concerned about the security of IE during this problem.

I've done a system restore to before the problem but it didn't help.

There are three computers in my house, two of them are affected, one isn't. So I don't think this is an ISP issue, but I could be mistaken.

Is anyone out there familiar with this problem?

Keep in mind that any links or such you provide me I will most likely not be able to follow, because the page likely won't load. If you suggest I download something please provide a direct link to the zip/exe file.

Thanks in advance.

Hi, I am running IE6 on Win98. After I browse a few pages, it quits loading pages. Links stop working, and I only get the "done" indicator in the status bar. Have to hit Refresh a couple times, then wait sometimes a couple mins. Tried deleting temp internet files, all offline content, ran the Repair IE function in control panel, and Norton System Works doesn't find anything. Driving me nuts.

Hints(?)- problem may have started after I did my taxes on TurboTax for the Web, also, my (this is weird) browser freezes any time I go to the microsoft web site.

A:web pages not responding

If it is just internet explorer having this problem then it can be two things. Either a fault with IE, currupted file etc.., or virus in your system that has gone wrong, and causes some bugs to appear in IE.

Do a complete scandisk, then a complete virus check. If nothing turns up, click on IE in the add/remove problems and then select the repair option.

A:Web pages not responding

Welcome to Seven Forums bbailey. We will definitely need more information.

Which browser are you using, and does this issue appear if you use other browsers?

When the webpage "stops responding" as you say, do you get any error messages, or the page just appears to stop responding?

If you refresh the page, does it appear to start working normally agaon?

Can you post an example of a page that stops working? Something that doesn't require having membership to view.

I'm sure with more info, someone can give you some advice.

Our users have IE 7 and 8. We keep them locked into place by pointing IE to our firewall product (tools > internet options > connections > lan settings), so that only approved sites are the ones that our people can access. In the last few days, several of them report issues with specific websites loading very slowly - load times of over an hour just to get the log-in screen to appear.Troubleshooting Steps:1.) Unchecked the "use proxy server for your LAN" under the IE menus---> Site resolves instantly, as it should---> This pointed me to the direction that perhaps the site wasn't configured for our firewall2.) Re-checked the "use proxy server" box, and specifically configured the site in our firewall---> Site continues to resolve slowly, with the same load times as before performing step 1That would normally indicate that the problem is on the vendor's end. Something may be wrong with their site. And that's the line of thought I was pursuing until I was reported back to that the users are having the same problem on other websites. These new websites they're having problems with are, and have been for a long time, configured properly in the firewall.I'm not sure what my next step is to pursue. What am I looking for now? I don't know enough about networking to figure out where to track next.

I am having a problem with Firefox. I have only just got a brand new pc with Vista 64 bit OS, download most if not all of the updates and installed Firefox. When I'm using Firefox everything seems fine and then all of a sudden it will stop. I could browse plenty of pages and then the next time I try and load one it does nothing, just a white screen. There are no error messages and if I close it and try and re-open it I then get an error message saying Firefox is already open, please close the current one first (or something along those lines). I press Ctrl, Alt + Del and go to processes and there is Firefox, but I click to end the process and nothing happens. Even to restart my pc is a lenghty process. Does anyone have any idea what is going on?

Many thanks

Are you running W95 or W98? What version of IE do you have? In IE click on Help>About. The version number will be something like 5.00.2919.6307.

If the page is not done loading then try clicking on the Stop button on the browser before clicking on another link. Does that stop the error message?

I recently was infected by conflicker when I was repairing another computer.

I repaired the computer using various programs (Combofix, Malwarebytes, SDfix, Avast, Spyware doctor). My computer seems to be running fine but when I try to use firefox for more then 5 minutes I cannot load any pages.

If I try to click a link or go to a website it says "stopped" in the left corner and will not work unless I close it out then go to process manager and kill the process.

I have tried creating a new profile and reinstalling Firefox. I also disabled windows firewall and uninstalled spybot to no avail.

Internet explorer and all other programs seem to be working fine.

I have no detection of any relapse of conflicker.

I just got a new laptop, and have been having some troubles with Firefox. Every so often, while surfing, pages will suddenly stop loading. I have noticed latterly that my IE7 will just die on me. When I try and open a new page or tab it will just sit there and say loading page. It is almost as if I have lost internet connectivity. However if I open Firefox and try the same page it will load instantly. I then close down IE reopen it and it works fine once again. It almost seems this occurs when I have had it open for some time and have been doing a lot of browsing different pages using tabs browsing. At this stage I may have around three tabs open.

I am starting to lean more back towards FF2 As this has really become quite an issue.

Hey everyone, Ive been searching the net for 2 weeks tring to solve this problem and everything I have tried has failed!!!

Firstly, Im running a Linux Debian based distro in a virtual machine on my Windows 10 laptop, no problems.
I can run the browser in the Virtual Machine and load pages just fine.. Proxy chain, TOR it all works.

I start the VPN (in the virtual machine) on the Linux terminal, the VPN connects through to the VPN server and says "Initialisation Sequence Completed" ..once again, no problem.

BUT, when I open up the browser again it fails to load.. Will not load any pages at all after I start the VPN.

All the openvpn files are updated as with everything else, nothing missing.
The connection is still up through the main OS and can surf the web no problem, it just stops working in the Virtual Machine.

From all the research I have done, Im guessing the TCP/UDP (interface/adapter connection?) is not routed properly to my ethernet and so the packets are not getting through?

Problem is I dont know enough about networking to understand the route or ifconfig info, nor how to fix the propblem even if i did.

If someone could please help I would be eternally grateful!

A:Browsers not responding, pages unresponsive

for google chrome have you tried to delete the history and cookies. This could be slowing down the browser not exactly sure if it would cause the page to be unresponsive with back can be because of a slow running computer browser, etc.
yeah, I would try to reinstall AVG, but you might have a virus that is attacking the AVG and browser. Maybe you should go into safe mode and see if he could run the VirusScan in safe modeif you can't reinstall AVG and unsafe mode and run the scan them in a famous works out. Hope it helps.

It seems to be the week for silliness with IE
Anyone any ideas why IE7 should suddenly without any warning or known changes (updates are automatic) stop processing any pages once you have entered a username and password?
It has happened on two machines both running AOL over a shared router.

A:IE stops processing pages after keying username and password

Update -
After resetting all the security bits in IE, Windows Security and the McAfee (spit) software and getting nowhere, I disabled all security in router = no good.
I then reset the router to ex-factory settings which did no good either.
I then fitted a new wireless router, reinput the same username and account details and it worked a treat.
Now why do you suppose a modem router should be selective about which websites to allow network systems to open? Beats me.

When starting Internet Explorer 8, I can open a few pages, then it stops opening after a few minutes. Example, my home page is Yahoo.com. I can open IE8 and view Yahoo home page. I can click on the news section and read a few different articles, then it stops after opening a few. I do not get an error message, and the page stays on the current page/last article that did open, but won't open anything else that I try to read. It looks like it is trying to change the page, but then stops trying.

When I close the browser (click the X top right corner) and try to run Window Washer, it states that the browser is running. When I try to close the browser and clean using Window Washer, Window Washer will then freeze up. I also use Slim Cleaner. When I run it, same response......browser is running. I try to close it through Slim Cleaner, then it appears to close and clean as normal. However, if I immediately reclean with Slim Cleaner, same response, browser is running.

If I shut down the computer and restart, I can run Window Washer without it stating browser is running. Same with Slim Cleaner. So, it appears the problem occurs upon opening IE8, not upon start up.

I've updated all anti-virus and programs. I ran all programs 3 times in safe mode. Ad-Aware found mywebsearch, and seems like it did delete it. 2 more scans came back clean. I would recommend not using software that states that it can boost PC Performance such as Windows Washer, Slim Cleaner, and Advanced System Care per the following:Bleeping Computer DOES NOT recommend the use of registry cleaners/optimizers for several reasons:? Registry cleaners are extremely powerful applications that can damage the registry by using aggressive cleaning routines and cause your computer to become unbootable. The Windows registry is a central repository (database) for storing configuration data, user settings and machine-dependent settings, and options for the operating system. It contains information and settings for all hardware, software, users, and preferences. Whenever a user makes changes to settings, file associations, system policies, or installed software, the changes are reflected and stored in this repository. The registry is a crucial component because it is where Windows "remembers" all this information, how it works together, how Windows boots the system and what files it uses when it does. The registry is also a vulnerable subsystem, in that relatively small changes done incorrectly can render the system inoperable. For a more detailed explanation, read Understanding The Registry.? Not all registry cleaners are created equal. There are a number of them available but they do not all work entirely the same way. Each vendor uses different criteria as to what constitutes a "bad entry". One cleaner may find entries on your system t... Read more

I had recently just been working on an issue in which I posted a thread regarding whether there was a possible virus/malware after google chrome terminated with the following message from Hitman Pro Alert:
Attack Intercepted
'Google Chrome 49' has been terminated to prevent execution of malicious code. Please check your computer for malware and software updates
As it happened, it appeared to be because of a conflict somewhere in the Google Chrome, Trusteer Rapport and Hitman Pro Alert combination, and so the only way was to change the settings on Hitman Pro Alert as advised and shown in my thread:
However, there was no malware or virus detected by my own Avast or Malwareware bytes tools, and the tools used as instructed in the thread also showed my system to have none. Also, google chrome works fine, and my computer has not slowed in any way. My fir... Read more

Sorry if I missed it, did you earlier, during the uninstall and reinstall of Firefox, clear Firefox's cache files, not any other files, just the cache files?

So earlier today I noticed there was some issue with a lot of pages load pages loading up for me. FOR EXAMPLE.... A lot of pictures (not all)
Appear distorted like so:
In this other image you can see a page loading the HTML code
In an attempt to work this out myself, I updated my java and adobe flash shockwave to it's newest settings. But yeah.... this is where I'm at. Any help would be awesome.
I don't think this is a graphic card issue, as this is actually happening on all my computers.
I'm using the most current up to date firefox.

For the last few days I have been getting some odd behavior when I try to access my accounts on several websites. When I access the legitimate website and try to log in, I am redirected to a phishing page which asks for account information, including credit card numbers, ATM Pin, etc.

There was one other post I found here that had what appeats to be the same problem, but I have not been able to successfully remove the issue myself from following the help you provided to him. (http://forums.techguy.org/malware-removal-hijackthis-logs/736876-solved-ebay-paypal-fake-web.html)

Using OTScanIT and modifying slightly the fix script provided to the other user I was able to briefly get my Ebay account working again, but when I tried to access my bank account (Wells Fargo) I am now being redirected to the fake page again. I'm not sure what information it would be helpful to include here to help analyze what is going on. I recall having had this same problem once on another computer which is no longer experiencing the issue, but don't know what exactly I did to resolve it other than installing Avast and running a full clean (which I cannot do here, as this is a work computer that will not allow me to replace the existing virus scanning software). I do have limited installation capabilities on this machine, and have installed HijackThis and OTScanIT as well as Malwarebytes to aid in resolving this.

Please let me know what if anything I can do to fix this situation, including... Read more

Hi guys ( and girls )

I have an Acer Asspire 5332 running Vista.

A month or so ago the CD/DVD rom stopped working. Device Manager states it is unable to start and updating driver/uninstalling device etc does nothing either, other than recognise the drive as "standard cd rom" whereas it is actually a dvd rewriter. Acer tech support say that windows should pick up the driver automatically and cannot understand what the problem is. They do not provde a driver for the cd/dvd unit.

Then, in the last 2 weeks, certain web pages have failed to open, namely Hotmail and Facebook. All I get is a blank page with no error message Also videos on all sites intermittently work and don't work, saying I need to install Javascript which I already have! I have done all the usual checks and fixes ( internet options / javascript uninstall reinstall etc, as well as un-installing internet explorer itself.

Using another browser ( Safari ) opens up all pages including Hotmail and Facebook fine, but I still get the issue with the videos.

Does this sound like a virus? I have run Avast scan, and Malwarebytes and CC Cleaner. I am posting a "Hijack this log" for any braniancs to look over. Not sure if it is one problem, or several but doing my head in !!!

thanks in advance,

Hi ,
Have had this problem for last 2 - 3 weeks .
Can connect to my talktalk broadband ok , i do this first , then ....start ms outlook and get no server response , operation timed out error 0X8004210A , for both receive and send.
Contacted talktalk help line , had my settings checked , pinged ok , he suggested entering webmail.talktalk.net in my firefox browser to get e-mail to go in outlook .
This worked ok and was a good enough work around , but I didn't realise at the time that my firefox was refusing to load pages after a reboot . In fact it does start to work after a delay of about 30 minutes and then everything works normally , e-mail and web browsing.
When Firefox was unable to load pages i tried everything i could think of to get it going ...
took down firewalls , ran antispyware and reset settings , then suddenly everything would return to normal and i thought it was fixed , but on next boot the same problem came back.
A few days later i found that the error would disappear spontaneously after about 30 minutes , whether i was playing around or not .
the same thing happens with IE6 and outlook express . I have tried reinstalling browsers , the antispyware comes up clean ,Spybot ,Ewido and AVG .
Running XP prof.
Any help would be very appreciated ,please bear in mind my very limited computing skills
Cheers Bill

Not sure why this keeps happening on my Latitude D620 with XP Pro.
I frequently get pages that don't respond or the error "A plug-in (Shockwave Flash) is not responding."
And then it locks up for a while and slows everything down.
Any ideas what I can do?
Thanks so much.

A:all internet pages 'not responding' when type in to text box..

Sounds as though you're done thorough troubleshooting. The fact that all browsers fail and restore points gives errors (it would help to know what the errors are) leads me to suggest a more thorough malware scan.

Here's a good reference that runs a number of tools. I've used all of the ones in the guide and would write the same instructions. Just be sure to download the free versions of each tool (not a free trial).

Also be alert during any install and watch out for other software offered (some are only executables - meaning there is no install, download and run) - untick any checkboxes that offer unrelated software (toolbars, etc) . One other thing to note is that when I recently downloaded and install Kaspersky TDSS, it asked me to update - I don't thinl the guide below mentions that.

Do you have more then 1 computer connected to your modem/router? If so, does this happen on them? If not, can you connect a separate one (ex: friend's laptop) to test?

Normally when you get errors like this it's best to rule out a problem at the modem/router and provider before going crazy over trying to fix a problem (that may not exist) on your PC(s).

Also just a couple of other questions:

Who is your internet provider (ISP)?
What connection type do they use (Cable/DSL/Fiber/Fixed Wireless/Mobile Wireless)?
What is the make and model of your router and modem?

A:Doesn't Always Connect And Pages Don't Always Load Or Load Right

Sorry for the delay, this forum is very busy right now.

There is a program from a company called SearchHelp, Inc. on this computer. Sentry at Home or Sentry Remote. From the information I can gather on the Internet, this is a legitimate application aimed at allowing parents control over their children's web surfing habits. Judging by some of the lines in this log it uses a proxy server and several other techniques to filter internet content. This might explain why you have trouble connecting to some web sites.

If you are the owner of this computer and installed this program, I would suggest disabling it temporarily to see whether your problems persist.

Whether they do or not, post a fresh HijackThis log along with the results of this test.

I've just started having this problem and its killing me.

I have 2 computers. My server is running windows 2000 server, and the secondary computer is running xp Pro.

The internet was working fine on my secondary computer, and then one day, it just started becoming slow, and it would not load pages (images wouldn't fully load, some pages wouldn't load at all). If i type in a url in the address bar for IE it would load the page quickly (probably from cache), but then proceeding to click links would cause "Page not found" or "timed out" errors.

I know that i can reach these sites, i ping them and get normal responses. It seems that IE is just not displaying them properly or something. The internet on my server computer works perfectly fine.

I have 2 nic cards in the server computer, 1 recieving the cable modem, and one receiving a LAN cable from my Hub.

Anybody have any ideas? Like i said, it worked on my secondary cmputer before. Also, i hooked up another computer to my hub and the internet was working fine, and then i installed Service Pack 3 and it started crapping out like mentioned above.

This is driving me NUTS!! ahhh. please help.

Try running a ping to the sites that have trouble loading to see what kind of connection times you are looking at. I would also run a tracert to those sites to see if there are any places dropping the connection.

Just started two-days-ago. Mozilla and IE 6.0.2900. I did a system restore back for two weeks to no avail as "nothing changed."

Mozilla and IE, through Mozilla, either takes long to load or no load. If it does load does so without .gifs or some links. Some links are broken. Some will load the login page fine then freeze on the next page.

The perplexing part is that it affects only a few pages but not the whole site: my hompage, Nasdaq.com; ebay.com (after the login page), espn.com takes a while, 240 sec, to load then only partially load.

Network fine, signal strength fine, I've killed Symantec, no difference. Switched to Windows firewall, no difference. Killed Adblock, no diff. Ran Spyware Doc, nothing; NAV scan, nothing.

I'm lost. Anyone have an idea?

Thanks in advance.

By the way, "It's not a tumor", said in my best Kindergarten Cop, Schwarzenegger voice.

My line has recently been upgraded to 8.1meg from 2.2 and i think the modem hasnt quite got the hang of it being this quick yet. It seems to work for a while but my line keeps changing. At first it ran at 7.6 and the problems with pages started so i reinstalled the drivers from the disk and it shot straight upto 8.1. Its been a pain for the past few days with some sits(even my homepage of Virgin) so i reinstalled it again and all the pages now come up.

Steps that I have taken to help problem:
Updated MalwareBytes and ran scan.  I also ran MalwareBytes in Safe Mode.  Scans showed nothing found.
Ran scan on Microsoft Essentials. Scans show nothing.
Made sure all Windows Updates are up to date (I have windows firewall turned on and have automatic updates turned on)
I have run a scandisk/checkdisk.  I believe it said it repaired one bad sector
I also have AFT Cleaner installed, which I run about once a week
I have no other malware or virus protection installed other than MalwareBytes and Microsoft Essentials.
Computer analyzed and said I did not need to defragment
Only using 25-30% if harddrive
Checked with Internet provider.  They said we are having no problems in my location area.
The only program I have installed in the last several months is Skype
Any suggestions.

How other browsers work ?. My personal choice is chrome and it works fine for me.Your IE version is 7 and it is fairly outdated. Latest is IE10 but Microsoft didn't even released IE 9 for XP. Sticking with an outdated browser is a security risk. Also a large number of websites require at least IE 8 or higher. I strongly recommend consider using an alternative browser or at least upgrade the Internet explorer version to 8.

Ok forewarned this is a high level problem.

So I had a problem with IE where it wasnt storing pages in history, I closed all my IE windows, and using ccleaner wiped the history file (I assume was corrupt) and that fixed that problem, but I made a new one, info as follows.

I normally on IE my first IE window has about 15 or so tabs loaded, which I use as reference points, for whatever reason I didnt bookmark these tabs but simply they were always loaded in the firs tIE windows after reboots etc. so basically on reboots I would close this IE windows last, and on the first IE window after reboot I would select "reopen last browsing session" from the menu to recover these tabs understood so far? What I did with ccleaner wiped this session, and those pages had hugely important info to me in them.

I have no system restore point to get it back.

I do have a norton recovery image 10 days old.

Now the new problem.

Norton recovery images are made with the system running, almost certianly I had IE open at the time. So there is no me importing IE files, starting IE and simply selecting "reopen last browsing session" as when norton did its image IE was running. So this leaves what?

The crash recovery data, when IE is running it stores data on whats currently open incase it crashes and so can recover.

In the image I have mounted there is the following folder. (Q drive)

Q:\Users\Chris\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Recovery

Inside it is various dat... Read more

A:importing IE9 recovery pages to get loaded pages back

Ok I have done it, here is how.

IE prepends its recovery files with 'RecoveryStore.'

and each session file is named like this '{9AC84612-1C85-11E3-AF5A-001B213DE643}.dat'
So a recovery file is like this 'RecoveryStore.{7ACE6B97-256F-11E3-96B2-001B213DE643}.dat'

When IE is running it has a registry key matching the name at 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Recovery\Active'
The key is without the prepend and file extension so such as '{7ACE6B97-256F-11E3-96B2-001B213DE643}'

If IE closes down successful the key is deleted from the registry.
If it crashes the key still exists, so on startup IE checks for the key and loads the associated .dat file to recover tabs.
