Windows 7 losing network printer drivers

Q: Windows 7 losing network printer drivers

I have a network user and before Christmas I installed a new desktop PC with Windows 7 professional for her.

Setup and installation went smoothly until just recently. In the last 2 months, the PC "loses" the printer drivers for our Nashuatec MP 3300 multifunction office printer.

The printer still shows as installed in the Control Panel but the status shows as "Printer: Needs new driver". I then have to install the new drivers from the print server using my admin credentials. The PCthen retains the drivers until the next day when it loses them again.

Does anyone have any ideas?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I have 2 Dell laptops on a wireless network both running Windows 7, both printing to a network printer hardwired to a desktop. One of the laptops frequently seems to hang up documents in the print queue. I have been solving this by deleting the stuck documents, deleting the wireless printer connection, rebooting and then reinstalling the printer connection, then sending to print again. It is happening nearly every other day and has become a huge pain. This has never happened on the other laptop. Help!

Windows Server 2003 DC, hosting about 40 network printers. 350 client
machines, running a mix of Win2K Pro & WinXP Pro.

We've been way behind on our client updates, and recently implemented WSUS
3.0. We've been pushing security & critical updates to our 2000 & XP Pro
workstations. We've noticed we're getting tons of calls saying they can't
print, and when you right-click the printer to get to it's properties, it
says that a driver must be installed. We delete and readd the printer, and
everything's ok until it happens again. This is happening on 3-15 computers
per day, and getting to be a HUGE problem.

I'm assuming this is due to an update of some sort, but endless searching
hasn't turned up anything applicable. I notice in the event logs, I get the

Failed to ugrade printer settings for printer
\\%CLIENT_NAME%\%PRINTER_NAME%,LocalOnly driver
C:\WINDOWS\System32\spool\DRIVERS\W32X86\3\unidrvui.dll error 126.

Seems like no pattern between clients, rarely the same printer, just similar
problems across the board. Where to start? I'd be glad to post any logs, or
try anything at this point.

Welcome to TSG....

Since this is obviously a company network that is having this trouble I was wondering why the IT department has not been notified. This would be the proper thing to do if only for one reason, If anybody here tried to help you and made your companies network crash not only would that be a costly disaster but it could cause you to possibly loose your job when the network crashes because of what you are doing here. Companies are very touchy about these things that crash their networks. Also I am sure there would be some sort of retro action taken against TSG.

Please contact your IT department and if you are in the IT department I would contact one of the product specialists or lead tech's that you have.

I am connected to a network through a router and the printer I use is connected directly to another computer. On initial boot up my computer shows the printer under "devices and printers" and I can print. However over time, the printer disappears from "devices and printers" and the only thing I can do is re-boot to get the printer back. How do I stop the computer from loosing the printer?

Hi ramona409 and Welcome to Seven Forums,

If the computer that has the printer connected to goes to sleep mode that might be an issue.

You may disable Hibernate Mode and see if that helps. Follow this Tutorial from Brink.

Hi All,

I manage a small network of 8/9 PCs and 1 server running Server 2003. We have a network printer connected directly into the network which is shared by all users and is the main printer for the office (ie; default on all clients).

A new PC has been added to the network running XP home and there is a really annoying problem. I add the network printer via 'Add Printer' in 'Printers and Faxes' and everything works fine, the drivers downloads and all programs can print just fine. This stays the same for a random amount of time. However, when the PC has been left for while, left overnight, rebooted or even looked at funny, it decides it cannot connect to this printer, as cannot establish a connection. It doesnt follow any pattern either, sometimes its 1 reboot before it loses connection, sometimes 10. Sometimes it works for 2 days, sometimes an hour.

Also, when I delete the printer and then add it again, it works as it should. But, not always. Sometimes it cannot establish a connection, warning box comes up, close that, try again, then it works again. With no setting changed in between attempt to add it.

The server acts as print server and has no problems with any other PCs (most have XP pro, couple have XP home). Checked server settings over and over and cant see anything wrong server side - so Im assuming its the client PC.

Any help/advice is greatly appreciated.

Dear forum,
My HP 8610 printer is constantly losing network connection. I have to reboot the router & printer every time I need to print. It doesn't matter if my laptop is close to the router. HP support is no help. I called my internet service provider and everything is okay from their end. I have a strong connection. I have tried every troubleshooting intervention possible. All my drivers are updated. It doesn't seem to be a problem with any other devices. I occasionally need to reconnect my tv but I don't use the internet for viewing that often.
Thank you for your help.

I have 100 windows 7 pc's on this network and only 1 pc is having this problem with 2 printers.  For 6 months now I have been googling and trying to fix the issues with 2 of her 5 printers showing "offline".  All printers are installed
the same way via the server here on site.  And only 2 of them are continually having this issue.

I have changed SNMP
All the printers are on a static IP already
I have uninstalled and reinstalled the printers via the server
I manually deleted the ports and reinstalled them manually using add printer/add port wizard
I have deleted the print queue and restarted print spooler on both her machine and my server
I reinstalled the print spooler on the local machine
I updated to the most recent manufacturers drivers for the printers

The printers in question are a Xerox 7800 and a Kyocera 5050 copier/scanner.  Al these printers are working and operatin fine on every other machine on the network here even while this one machine is showing offline.  I am at wits end with this
issue.  We have 2 of us in IT that serve this office and 7 remote offices to the tune of 300 employees (i know, its ridiculous), and I do not have an easy way to just rebuild her machine as we are swamped/this is a production machine/i dont have a temp
machine that I can put her on that will have all the applications she will need.  If someone has some magic they can send in a box I would be beyond grateful.

Hi guys,

Kind of annoying problem here... I have an HP LaserJet 1200 hooked up via USB to a Mac that is running 10.5 (Leopard). For the printer's first 5 years or so everything was great. I could get new computers set up to print to the printer with no troubles, until recently.

Recently, I upgraded my computer to Windows 7 and wanted to get the printer working again. I attempted to install the printer using the HP LaserJet 1200 PCL 6 printer drivers. It connected to the printer alright, but every time I printed it came out with a PCL XL Error: "Error: UnsupportedProtocol" instead of my document.

Now, every time I try to connect a new computer (Windows 7 or Windows XP, doesn't matter) the printer automatically installs the PCL 6 driver for the printer... which always prints out an error instead of the document I want. I can't find a way to manually choose the driver when I'm adding it because it's a network printer, not one that's locally hooked up.

I tried installing the PCL 5 driver manually, but the printer still ONLY wants the PCL 6 driver that gives me the errors. I tried to go to "Server Properties" while in Printers and Faxes to roll back the PCL 6 driver, but Windows can't find a driver to roll it back to.

Now, if I physically hook the printer up to the computer via a USB cable, it installs the PCL5 Driver and it works... but that's only when it's plugged directly in.

I'm extremely frustrated a... Read more

Brief synopsis:
I recently did a new Windows XP install (after a crash). Now I cannot get my printer to install. The printer is a SHARED printer (HP Deskjet F380) on another machine on the network. The printer was previous installed on this machine before the crash and reinstall of WinXP.
After nearly 2 hours on the phone w/ HP support, it's been determined (by HP support) that somewhere in the XP install, a missing XP driver is keeping this install from properly allowing any printers to be installed. The printer will 'appear' to be installed, but any attempt to print brings an error saying printer drivers aren't properly installed.

Short of doing ANOTHER complete XP install, any suggestions?

I have a small home network with my main PC running Windows 7 x64 Pro, a network printer and a couple of other machines (Vista and XP). Connections are via a Gigabit switch to my router. I am deliberately not using a Win 7 Homegroup because my other machines are not running Win 7.

All was working fine until about 10 days ago, when the Windows 7 PC suddenly started losing the printer and other networked PCs. Internet access was not affected. Other PCs on the network also unaffected.

Strangely the Win 7 PC will rediscover the network if I disconnect the LAN cable from the PC to my gigabit switch and then reconnect. All network functions are then o.k. until the next boot-up of this Win 7 PC.

I'm assuming this is a side effect of some recent Microsoft OS update?

A:Windows 7 x64 losing network drives

It's more likely to be the effect of an A/V software or a third party firewall blocking Windows 7 from the network.

My 2 Fujitsu laptops with Centrino WiFi running Windows XP keep on losing wireless network connectivity every few minutes. Both laptops are in close vicinity of the Netgear router. To start with the signal strength is excellent but after a few minutes, it displays the message "No wireless networks available". At this point I've to manually force it to connect again to my wireless network. I'm using WEP encryption on my network. I also have a desktop with a wireless card running Windows XP which has no connection problems.
I've seen various threads on this topic but no definitive answers. Any help would be appreciated.

A:Windows XP losing wireless network intermittently

The only time I've seen an issue with wireless connectivity being repeatedly intermittent was in the presence of a 2.4 GHz cordless phone (even when idle). As soon as the phone was unplugged the wireless clients not only connected but stayed connected. The problem occurs when the Base sends a "ping" to the phone on an overlapping frequency.

Verify there are no other active 2.4 GHZ devices in the vicinity. Cordless Phones, wireless video (X10 cameras), and some RF keyboards/ mice.

I have an HP Pavilion a6150e running Windows Vista. I work in a small office and we connect to a larger network through ports on our floor (our network admin said our connection is a DS3, though I'm not familiar with that).

When I start up my computer I can connect to the internet just fine, but certain events will trigger a lost connection that cannot be repaired unless i restart. This will usually happen when I am downloading a file (such as an installation file or an update file) though it also occasionally happens while I am just browsing. My network admin has no clue what the problem is, and HP's tech support is stumped (and difficult to deal with). There are certain sites from which I can download a file and I will undoubtedly lose my connection, its not a random occurrence.

I know a little bit about computers, and it seems to me that once my bandwidth reaches a certain limit over some interval of time, my connection is completely lost. Not sure if this is correct, but that is the feeling I get. Sorry this is so wordy, any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance!!

Yesterday I had the Windows defender virus on my Desktop computer. I read things online and most places were saying to use rKill, ComboFix, and Malwarebytes. So I followed everything and then the virus was removed (I believe). Less than an hour later a friend of mine went to a website (which I believe got me a virus).
Ever since then when my computer boots up the task bar at the bottom of the screen is grey and plain (looks like a task bar from Windows XP maybe), it says that my "Audio service is not running", and I do not even have the bars that show my Wifi signal (I'm assuming that I am missing the driver now?).
I do not know if ComboFix is what did this or if I have another virus but I have become so frustrated with this that I figured I would ask for help.

I'm running a Gateway DX4860, Windows 7, and a wireless internet card.
If ANY other information is needed then I will be more than happy to give it.

I saw another post that had the exact same problem I'm having, just that my problem is on a desktop. We got wireless internet a few months ago and my desktop was working fine with it. Have a wireless adapter for the internet. Then a few weeks ago the internet started randomly disconnecting from only my computer. I thought it was a network problem. But then I hit something and the internet was working fine again for a few weeks. Now it's on the fritz again starting yesterday.

When I try disconnecting and then reconnecting to the network, it will tell me that there were no networks to connect to. And when I unplug the adapter and plug it back in to the usb ports, it'll tell me that my computer can't recognize the adapter, that it's malfunctioning. I've tried the adapter in all the ports and it gives me the same message. I have to restart my computer to get it to both recognize the adapter and the network so it'll connect again once it's restarted. The internet will last for random periods of time. When the internet goes out, I get the yellow triangle error thing first on the network icon, it doesn't just go right to there being nothing period and having the X symbol, only after I try disconnecting from the network. Sometimes all day then I'll leave the computer on over night and find the internet is out again on it in the morning. Or it'll last for only a few minutes. Sometimes the computer won't lose the network if ... Read more

My laptop shares our Dell printer with our desktop computer through a wireless router. The printer is connected directly to the desktop.
My problem has gotten so bad that before I can print a document from my laptop, I first have to delete the printer, then "find" it and install it again. sometimes, I have to restart my laptop to complete a print job.
I am tempted to buy a new wireless printer, but the printer may not be the real problem here.
Frequently, my laptop cannot "see" the printer in any list (the list doesn't populate) until I restart the computer--following a deletion of the printer routine.

Hi all,

I recently upgraded to Windows 7 (32 bit), but now my Lexmark All-In-One X74-X75 printer drivers aren't compatible... well, kind of.

When I first reinstalled the drivers after the upgrade, I was able to use the scan facility of the printer, and print jobs could queue up for printing, but they would not print. When I attempted to update drivers, uninstall/reinstall, etc, I was told the installation was unsuccessful.

I could not find any drivers for my model printer on the Lexmark site, but I was hoping someone out there may have some tips on how I can get around this problem.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I just set up my new Dell with Windows 7. I connected it to my Brother MFC-8840D printer with a USB connection. Windows 7 recognized the printer and set it as default. But I cannot print anything. I called Brother, and the person said that the proper driver was in the computer. However, she then sent me an email which indicated that Brother does not offer a driver for this unit with Windows 7, but that an appropriate driver can be found on Windows Update. I had no success going to Windows Update. Does anyone have an idea (short of having to buy a new printer)?

A:Windows 7 and Drivers for a Brother Printer

I'd try to get clarification from the tech support person about getting a working driver via Windows Update, and why it didn't work for you.

If Brother has a Vista driver try that.

Or try the Vista or XP driver using the Troubleshoot Compatibility option (assuming you have a self-installing executable right click on it to get that option). You can spend the better part of an afternoon with the "recommended" settings, and with XP or Vista with various service pack levels. Oh, and sometimes this works. Start reading from post # 18 in this thread to see how this technique worked for some USB wireless adapters.

Check for updated drivers on company web site.
Check for any new firmware
Check for patches.

I would uninstall and then install the printer, again.

Before the above always make a restore point. on system restore.

Installing the vendor's drivers should override the windows installed drivers. The vendor's drivers are needed for full functionality as you have found out.

I did that with all of the drivers in my system. I installed Win 8 and it installed the generic HD Audio Codec for the windows drivers and several other generic drivers. After installing Win 8, I installed the drivers from my motherboard vendor and it replaced the windows installed drivers with the motherboard vendor drivers.

I helped a friend upgrade his work computer from Windows 7 to 8. It mostly all went well except for two problems:

1. It doesn't want to run login scripts for their Windows SBS 2011 server, and
2. It won't recognize any printer we try to install.

I unjoined it from the network, and deleted the computer from the server, so now there shouldn't be any conflict with the server...

The first printer we tried to get to work was an HP P1006, and when we didn't have any luck, we tried a brand new Brother HL2270DW, but we STILL cannot get it to work, even though Brother tech support said it should.

Here's the last thing I tried: I went to devices and printers, click on any printer device, and
then "Printer server properties" at the top...
then go to drivers tab,
then click "Add..." which brings up the Add Printer Driver Wizard,
then click Next, and
then Next again for only x86 drivers,
then click the "Windows Update" button, and
then, after a pause, I select Brother on the left,
then "Brother HL-2270DW Series" on the right,
then click next,
then click Finish, and...

I get an error that says

Driver Installation Error
Windows can't instal the Brother HL-2270DW series kernel-mode print driver. To obtain a driver that is compatible with the version of windows you are running, contact the manufacturer.

Kernel mode driver? Straight from Windows Update? What's up with that?

Any ideas, anyone?

Thanks in advance,

A:Can't install any printer drivers, even from Windows Updat

Do you have a driver disc for the Brother? Its best to install devices using the vendor supplied drivers (either download or disc) than the way you are doing it. If you have a Vista or Win 7 driver it should be Win 8 compatible. However, if you only have an XP driver you can try installing it using the XP compatibility mode.

The same goes for the HP printer.

In most cases when installing devices such as a Printer, you FIRST run the vendor's installer and then only physically connect the device when the install program tells you.

Hi, I have used a Mac most of my life and just got a new laptop today with Windows 8 on it and I am struggling, ANYWAY, I just plugged in the USB cable from my printer to the laptop and pressed print on a word document and it prints but im pretty sure its using coloured ink to print out the black and its taking forever just to print one page, the thing is the printer setting/options seem to be lacking, there is no option to choose black and white or reduce the quality etc, i didn't have to download drivers because it just picked the printer up, however, i tried to download the drivers to to see if that would fix the problem but it won't let me, when i got into the control panel to the printer i tried to click on download drivers but i get an error window pop up called RunDLL with a message saying There was a problem starting C:\windows\system32\spool\drivers\x64\3\ep0nb0lb.dll The specified module could not be found.

Then when i try to click on 'support' again i get an error message saying the link is incorrect.

When i went to the epson website and downloaded the drivers, it downloaded them but when i clicked on them it wouldn't let me open them, another error message...

I dont know my way around these windows computers so its probably something everyone knows except me : )

I experienced some sort of driver conflict that prevent Windows 8 Pro from starting, so I did a Refresh. Didn't understand how that worked, so I got the nasty surprise that all my desktop programs and drivers were uninstalled.

So I've been reinstalling everything and just when I've finally got everything else in order I find out I can't install any printer drivers at all, despite being Windows 8 certified drivers. Not even PDFLite.

I get the message "error while testing for existing printer" followed by message "printer installation error -1001 (0)".

What's up with Windows 8 refusing all my print drivers? :(

Next time, you might have better luck using System Restore, using a restore point from before the driver conflict. System Restore can be started from the Windows 8 Recovery Environment by selecting the Troubleshooting option, then selecting System Restore. You likely rebooted into the Windows 8 Recovery Environment when your system wouldn't restart successfully.

The Windows 8 Recovery Environment is also available when booting your computer from a "repair disk" CD or DVD (you can type "recdisc" into the Search box available from the magnifying glass icon on the Windows 8 "Charms" bar, and then select the "recdisc.exe" icon to create such a disc). You can also create bootable USB from the "create a recovery drive" icon: type "Recovery" into the Search box, then select "Settings", then select the "create a recovery drive" icon.

The advantage to using System Restore is that most programs won't have to be reinstalled (and your personal files are kept safe, as well).

RE: your present printer predicament
1) Unplug any connected printers. Power off wireless printers.
2) Remove any printers listed in the "Devices & Printers" applet in Control Panel.
3) If a Windows 8 driver is available from the printer's manufacturer's website, download the one that matches your version of Windows (64-bit or 32-bit).
4) Reboot.
5) You can power on any wireless prin... Read more

Hello, seem to be having a rather serious issue with my laptop lately. It seems to be occasionally going through a sort of crash. First it "stutters", locking up, unable to move the mouse, if audio is playing it will loop. Then it just resets itself, as if crashing. There's been no consistency on to what causes it, or how often. Playing a Youtube video, running a virus scan, trying to reinstall the network driver, or even just trying to open up the network center in control panel. Sometimes it will go ten minutes, sometimes a couple hours before resetting itself. When it comes back, I no longer have any wireless network capabilities, and the network driver is missing. The icon displays a box, rather then a wifi symbol, with a red 'x', and says "No connections available". Resetting it again seems to fix it, but some times it takes a a few tries. And sometimes it seems I lose just my wireless network capabilities, without a crash (something that happened while writing out this post). The icon stays a wifi symbol, but with a red x. No one else in my household is having any issues, and my phone connects just fine. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the wireless driver, but that doesn't seem to work. I reset the modem, of course, but that didn't solve it. I ran a diagnostic with the Dell Support Assist, but it said it passed and detected no issue. Only solution I've found seems to be to restart it, and hope it takes a while before it ... Read more

At my computer club I am able to print out my handouts for my classes on the club's wireless printer. Windows 8 is the operating system I'm using if this makes any difference. Problem is that every few days, I lose contact with the printer and have to reinstall the driver. My laptop is a Toshiba, and the printer is a Brother.

Because the printer's IP address changes but your Printer Properties still has an "old" address? If so, the easiest fix I know--if you have sufficient control over the printer--is to give the printer a static IP configuration.

every now and then (more now than then ) I lose a printer that's configured with a local port to a server. I set that one up with add printer, then local port, new port "\\server\printer". Often when I try to use that printer again, I note it's greyed out, and markes as "Use offline". When I check properties, it's not bound to any port anymore. I can't from that dialog use "add port", because I get a message then, that the port already exists. So I gotta delete that port, and reassign the printer. That is quite annoying, being that this doesn't happen rarely, but more often.
So, two questions: What was the mscsomething command, where I can see created local ports, to delete them? And, how can I stop Windows from losing the connection between that port and the printer?

anyone maybe has news on this ? It's still happening after every reboot...

I have 2 PC's running WIN98. The "local" PC has a Lexmark printer attached to LPT1:. The "remote" PC is using this printer over the network. All runs smoothly until I reboot the local PC. The remote PC will no longer access the network printer. In order to resolve, I have to access the shared printer properties on the local PC and perform the following operations: NOT SHARED-APPLY-SHARED AS-APPLY-OK. The remote PC again will recognize the printer.

A:Solved: Losing Shared Printer

I couldnt' tell you why you have a bug there. I could possibly suggest to completely uninstall the printer and then reinstall the printer again reapplying all the shared permissions again. Maybe they will stick. Otherwise it's possible you could write a small script to run at startup that will do just that process that you have been doing to correct the issue. If you prefer not to do that. I would suggest to look at upgrading the pc's to XP where the shared permisions and network connectivity is more secure and a bit more reliable.
I know upgrading may not be an option, but maybe something to consider. At this point, windows does not support windows 98 any longer. So help is quite limited.
Oh...thought of another option. You could possibly use a print server. I think Lynksys makes one that will connect an LPT connection to a network connection, which will assign and IP address and the printer will basically be a network printer. I know for a fact that HP makes a unit, but not a 100% the unit will work with a LExmark...HP's is called JetDirect.
Those are very simple to install and will elimate any shared setup but will allow you to install the same printer on both pc's using an ip address.
Good Luck...Hope that will help!

Got XP Home on a network and it is currently using a networked printer to print to. But everytime you boot the machine it looses the path of the printer. I then have to install the printer again.

Is there a fix for this?

I'm following the guide from Dell on my clean reinstall, but I;m running into a lot of problems. Before I begin I should say that before I even began installing drivers, for some reason there was no option in the driver manager for "Storage controllers" so I did not deleate anything and I am following the instructions straight from the dell site and the proper latitude e6410 driver manual page. AHCI is enabled in Bios as well with my Samsung 840 pro SSD

First in the picture below: it shows what the before and after should be once I install the Intel Rapid Storage Driver, but here's the thing, I don't even have a slot for "Storage Controllers" which should by default, have the Intel ICH8M-E/ICH9M-E SATA RAID Controller in the drive manager as seen in the third picture, and even after I installed the Intel Rapid Storage Driver, there still is no slot for the "Storgae Controllers" to been seen. However, in the second picture you'll see that I have a IRST icon and you can see the program running, so I'm completely lost.

Also in the third picture, dell instructed me to install the Intel AMT HECI Package, however upon tryign to install an error appears and says "my system does not meet the minimum requirements", yet I'm on the page for the proper drivers in installation order for my Latitude e6410, so again following the info right from the site, but strike two .

I'm ready to toss this thing out the window, but thought I would calm down... Read more
