Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 dock not charging Thinkpad X380 YOGA

Q: Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 dock not charging Thinkpad X380 YOGA

Hi, I have a Thinkpad X380 Yoga. The Thunderbolt 3 Dock will not charge my Thinkpad X380 YOGA, and a message saying that the dock is not providing enough power shows up on my minitor. I wonder if anyone have a solution to this problem. It does not make sense to have to connect the Thunderbold AND the AC power to the Thinkpad, it should be just ONE Thunderbold cord. 1. My power brick is 135W, 20V-6.75A2. I am connecting the Thunderbolt to throuogh the port on the back of the dock.3. I have went to BIOS and under power section, "disable the battary for technical service" and pwered it back on. None of the above solutions worked.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Just got myself a second thinkpad, a X380 as the HDMI port wont support a widescreen from LG, i bought myself a Thunderbolt 3 dock. But I can't get the dockingstation to work. Is this because it's not comptable according to lenovo? The Thunderbolt controller is also not aways found, i have to manualy use the driver file which is able to detect the driver which is provided with the driver from intel. Ones opened, the thunderbolt controller is visible in the thunderbolt software. But no connection with the dockingstation. Is this because it's not comptable according to lenovo?

We have standardized our deployments to ThinkPad X1 Yogas, and in many case including this one, they are the second generation model. Because of the performance, we use the Thunderbolt 3 Dock, purchased directly through Lenovo. This setup is not unfamilar to use as we have deployed over 40 workstations in the same configuration. This morning, our team received a call stating that an end-users monitors weren't working. Upon reviewing, we found that the dock wasn't being recognized by the laptop, although the connection was there because it was charging the laptop. We went through the normal "rinse and repeat" steps of ensuring that the thunderbolt cable was connected to the correct ports on both the dock and the laptop, removing the connection, removing the power, rebooting the computer, reintroducing the dock, etc., but to no avail. We remove the dock from known devices hoping that it would spark it to recognize a new device, but it didn't. We removed the Thunderbolt Software completely, reinstalling it, and then reconnecting the device, and still, nothing. Our devices are set to automatically install critical and security updates both through Lenovo Vantage and Windows Updates, but, the only change made between the time it was working and the time it stopped working wasn't relative to the dock. To be sure, we rolled back the updates, then rolled back farther, but it still didn't resolve the issue. We then followed through with installing all Windows and Lenovo updates: ... Read more

I have recently purchased both of the subject items.  I was informed via chat channels with Lenovo that the graphics dock would work with the X1 Yoga 3rd Gen.  However, upon connection, my Yoga recognizes that a Thunderbolt device has been connected but it does not recognize that a graphics card or USB ports exist.  Thus, my mouse, keyboard, and monitor do not work while connected to graphics dock.  I have downloaded and installed the drivers for the graphics dock but the result is still the same.  Does the graphics dock really work with the X1 Yoga 3rd Gen?  If so, is there a BIOS setting I must address to make this configuration work?

In the last month I purchased a Thinkpad X1 Yoga 2G and the Thuderbolt USB C dock. Since the USB C cable that comes with the dock is too short to allow the dock on the right and laptop on the left (in laptop mode), I put the notebook in tent mode and all works fine---except... Everytime I power up from hibernate it starts beeping about once a second and does not stop. I have to disconnect from the dock, flip it to laptop mode (this is where the beeping stops), return it to tent mode, and then plug the dock back in. It seems that Lenovo, like everybody else, is rushing things to market with plans to fix bugs later (maybe). Any thoughts I how to stop the beeping?  The first time it happened I closed all the apps to reboot and it still was beeping. Thanks.

dear support forum team,I am suffering from a very annoying problem in combination with my Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga X380 and the ThinkPad Hybrid USB-C with USB-A Dock. The setup: Notebook - Dock connection is via USB-C, 2 Displays attached to Dock via DP.    The symptoms: Mouse freezes, displays freeze ... after approx. 15 seconds they turn black and recover to normal operation within another 10 seconds. Interestingly: LAN connectivity, which is also handled via dock, stays working. If the problem reoccurs to often, within a short period of time, after the third attempt the external displays stay frozen (showing the last screen) and do not recover. I have to open the notebook lid, as this is the only active display then, and disconnect/reconnect the dock again.During that time, the eventviewer gets flooded with the EventID: 10111 Source: DriverFrameworks-UserMode and the Text: The device "ThinkPad Hybrid USB-C with USB-A Dock" (Location "003e.0000.0000.001.002.000.000.000.000") is offline due to a user-mode driver crash. I connect  a Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2 to my L390 Yoga with firmware 1.18 and the latest dock-drivers 10011. Then I try to make a firmware update of the dockingstation with firmware-version 3.1.61. After unpacking I start the "ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen2_Workstation Dock firmware update.exe" with admin-rights. Then I get a the following warning: "Can't read Thunderbol controller version, Will skip Thunderbolt firmware update!". After clicking "OK" the updater continue until the next message appear: "Your dock has new firmware can be upgraded, please click [Update] to start firmware upgrade."  and the Current Version shows: = <unknown>.If I click the update-button the programm continue until the message: "Firmware update completed!" appear. A click on the OK-button close the update-program.If a start the firmware-update program again the same error happens. The update-program can't retrieve the current version of the docking station. So is the update-program buggy? The installed OS is Windows 10-1903 with latest patches and the docking with the 2nd usb-c connector from above on th left side. I bought the Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2 because the Lenovo tool "docking-search" told me, that there are 3 dockings compatible with ThinkPad L390 Yoga. So what to do?

Does the Thinkpad P51s support the Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock? I have the Thinkpad P51s with stock Windows 10 Pro and updated to latest drivers and Windows version and installed the latest Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock drivers. Attaching the Thunderbolt 3 Dock to the P51s as described in documentation, it charges the notebook, however, noting attached to the dock is recognized. I've tested with attaching USB flash drives, headphones, Ethernet, HDMI, and DP, but nothing is recognized nor are any warnings/errors displayed in Windows. While the Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock is listed as being compatible with the P51s and T570, the notebook order page does not list the Thunderbolt 3 Dock in any of the accessories lists. Lenovo Sales also confirmed that the Thunderbolt 3 Dock is fully compatible with the P51s.  However, I needed to purchase the Thunderbolt 3 Dock separately from the notebook order. What's going on? Has anybody successfully used the P51s or the T570 with the Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock? Or is this something I need to wait for full support via a future BIOS/driver update? Or perhaps my Thunderbolt 3 Dock is defective? Thanks,Boris

Hello, all. First time poster. Thanks in advance for anything anyone can offer by way of an answer. My question is fairly direct: Will the Lenovo ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2 135W work with my brand-new P43s Thinkpad? If this isn't the best or right one, which external graphics solution should I go with? I'm looking for some nice "oomph" for gameplay, etc. Kind of an after-purchase decision (sheepish grin). I have 16 gig of RAM and an i7-8565U. Thank you.Glenn

Apologies if something similar has been posted, I just can't find the answer. We have a 5th Generation Thinkpad X1 Carbon connected to a Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 dock. At the moment the display is mirrored using a VGA cable to connect to the dock. What we would like instead is to connect the dock to 2 external monitors with separate content on each monitor and the laptop display blank. I just can't figure out if this is possible, what might be needed, and how! Any help greatly appreciated.

I hope someone can help me.  I am having an issue with connecting my Lenovo ThinkPad X380 Yoga to a USB-C Dock.  I have installed all of the drivers and enabled Thunderbold 3 within BIOS, however only the USB, LAN connections work when I plug the dock into the Laptop.  The two displays that are plugged into the dock via Display Port do not work and the laptop seems not able to detect the displays.  Things I have tried: Plugged in only one monitor using both VGA and DP but still nothing.Uninstalled and reinstralled the drivers.Ran the Lenovo support tool to make sure all drivers on the laptop are up to date.Power cycled both the laptop and dock. As I said the USB devices plugged into the dock seem to work fine as does the LAN.  I have tried to update the firmware on the dock however I keep getting the following message: ThinkPad USB-C DP Hub version can't be checked! Please power cycle the Dock to try again. I have powercycled but still have the same message.  I am all out of ideas as to why the displays do not work.   Any ideas?

Thunderbolt failure that led to a missing thunderbolt controller and no longer charging. Before anyone suggestsThings we have done:pressed the reset buttonunplugged the cmos batterychanged the battery completelyDownloaded new drivers but Thunderbolt controller is missing and can't update. (they are both dead so and I can't remember exactly what is going wrong)Can't update firmware since we can't keep it on a charger as it wont charge. Currently don't have a Yoga X1 Gen 2 doner laptop except my coworkers so he is haven't to swap the batter in and out to give it power to do more testing when he can. I am assuming this is a full board replacement as they didn't seperate the Powerboard from the Mainboard unlike what they did with the Power switch which is on a seperate board....seems odd to me. Any doner board would come from a thirdparty and isn't something we are willing to do at this time. I would like to know if anyone else has had this problem as this is 2 out of the 8 we bought that are completely dead. Any help would be greatfully apprecitated. Thanks, S

Hi guys, We are experiencing multiple BSOD when connecting the USB-C docking, we think we almost tried everything but we cannot seem to find any resolution. Windows 10 1803All Lenovo System Update drivers are installed We are now finanaly able to reproduce the issue. 1) Lenovo X380 connected via USB-C with the dockingstation2) 2 screens connected to the dockingstation (Displayport)3) Users locks his laptop4) Remove the USB-C docking cable from the laptop5) Wait till both the external screen going into standby/sleep mode 6) User connects the USB-C docking again7) User login to his laptop via password or fingerprint8) Move mouse like 5 seconds, system hangs and produces a BSOD When we disable Secure boot there is no BSOD but the system freezes/black screen but not reboot Eventlog is almost clean with no errors which are related to this issue we think. It looks like the BSOD screens are everytime different then the last one. We already got a few memory.dmp and minidump files but we cannot figure out what is causing this issue. We are planning to roll out 300+ X380 with the Lenovo Dockings, but not with those issues ofcourse! Please help us identifying the issues and troubleshooting steps to fix this issue.Any help is appriciated. With kind regardStefan

So I got a brand new Yoga 370 and just got me a ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock. I have connected it to my laptop through a Thunderbolt 3 (40 Gb/s) USB-C cable male-male 5A, which supports power supply up to 100 W. I have plugged in the dock itself with a Lenovo original cable of 90 W. I also plugged in a HDMI cable from the dock to my monitor. After plugging in, my computer automatically installed the Thunderbolt software, package version 17.3.74.400. It also says I have the Thunderbolt controller generation 15BF, firmware version 4.04, installed now. Monitor works fine. But my Yoga is not charging. I tried to restart the computer, unplug the dock, and I even installed the Lenovo Power Management software from the Lenovo website, which I assume is then the latest version. Any ideas of what could possibly be wrong here? It is a bit of a disappointment as I was hoping this would work perfectly fine right away. I spent some 50 dollars on the USB C cable and another 150 on the dock itself. Thanks

Hi:   I have a new Thinkpad X1 Gen 7 for 2 months now and am quite happy with it.  However, I have a problem, I can't seem to figure out:  When the laptop is connected to Lenovo Thunderbolt dock, it cannot boot; It just gets stuck at the Bios Lenovo logo.  But if I remove the thunderbold cable from the dock, reboot and reconnect the cable after Windows is booted, every device connected to the dock work fine.  I have update all the drivers and firmware to the latest versions.   I have Premium support and the technician think the motherboard is defective and suggested that I change the motherboard.  Somehow, I doubt that this is a problem.  Does anyone have the same problem and/or a solution?   Thank you in advance,

I have a new P51, 64 GB ram, SSD hard drive. Ihave a docking station at work and one at home. The one at home has a 6 TB Seagate BarraCuda pro USB3 drive attached. When I dock the laptop at home, the system will not boot. It gets to the bios boot sceen and stays there until I turn off or disconnect the USB drive. Once I do that, it continues to boot and if I turn the USB drive back on, it works fine. If the drive is my old 1 TB barracuda, it boots normally.

Hello everyone, I recently bought a Thinkpad X1 Extreme and I am now locking for a suitable Thunderbolt 3 dock. Although I've read a lot of posts about various docks I am still a little consfused about which one to choose. It seems like the following ones would all work with the X1 Extreme:1. Lenovo ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2 135W:https://www.lenovo.com/ca/en/accessories-and-monitors/docking/universal-cable-docks-thunderbolt/Thun...2. ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock (170W):https://www.lenovo.com/ca/en/accessories-and-monitors/docking/universal-cable-docks-thunderbolt/Thun...3. ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock (230W):https://www.lenovo.com/ca/en/accessories-and-monitors/top-tech/Thunderbolt-WS-230W-dock-US/p/40AN023... Please correct me if I am wrong but to me it seems as if the only difference between these docks is that the workstation ones come with two AC adapters each and a special Thunderbolt/Power cable to avoid using two different cables. Or are there any other technical differences? So if I am okay with a two cable solution couldn't I just use the Lenovo ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2 135W and connect it via Thunderbolt while at the same time use my 135W AC adapter to charge the laptop? Thanks a lot in advance.

Hi all, I do tech support at a university that uses various Lenovo notebooks across campus. I have noticed a trend among the users that have a Thinkpad Yoga 370 Notebook and are using a Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock, myself included. Occasionally (every few weeks or so), one of the affected systems will show "plugged in, not charging" tooltip when hovering over the battery tray icon. When this happens, the charge indicator light by the charging port and Thunderbolt port does not turn on, the battery continues to drain, and unplugging the Thunderbolt cable and either plugging it (or the regular power cable) back into the notebook has no effect. These systems all use Lenovo System Update to keep their drivers and BIOS up to date, and I have updated the firmware on the Thunderbolt 3 Docks manually. This issue was brought to my attention because it started happening to me and my laptop/dock after the first few weeks of having it, and this behavior continued to happen for months. I would constantly be plugging in and unplugging my laptop, as I do on-site support in several buildings, and my laptop goes everywhere with me. In October I stopped using my dock entirely, and since then have had 0 problems when just using the laptop's regular charging cable. I have 3 or 4 other users whom I support that have this issue though; due to the sheer volume of documents they need open at once, they need a multi-monitor setup and ethernet ports, so not having a dock is not an option.
