Thinkpad T460p fingerprint lock - help

Q: Thinkpad T460p fingerprint lock - help

Hello Dear Lenovo community. I need some advice on an issue i have. One of our employees who left has left a T460p for reuse. When i attempted to reimage the machine i was greeted with a request to scan my finger. I am not able to go in to the bios as there is no password. When prompted to enter the bios i enter the supposed password, get a OK sign and enter however i cannot change anything. This employee left the country and is now living somewhere in the Philipines.... So the question is, how the heck do i wipe this ? Or should i just throw it in the recycling ?Thanks Cheers!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Good day and welcome to the community. If you're unable to change anything in the BIOS, then there is a supervisor/admin password set. The only way to remove it is to know it. There are no workarounds, backdoors, or master passwords. If the password is not available the only option is to contact Service to discuss a system board replacement.Regards.

Hello all, I hope you are doing well I purchased my T460P slightly over a year ago. When it arrived, the fingerprint sensor worked perfectly fine. Then I did a reset of Windows 10 and found that the sensor would not work. I got a error Code 10 in device manager. Some research unearthed the fact that this was a known issue when resetting Windows 10 and the only solution was a clean install. Today, after finding the time to backup all my files, I finally did do my clean install of Windows 10. However, I run into the same issue. After installing all drivers and getting everything to work fine, the fingerprint sensor still shows a yellow exclamation mark in device manager and the error: "This device cannot start. (Code 10)" I made sure to format my hard drive when installing and did a complete clean install with no leftover data from my previous install. I downloaded the latest driver from the support page and have also updated BIOS to the latest version (as of November 1 2017). I'm not quite sure what to do next. I know there is no hardware issue as the sensor was working fine and it was the initial reset that caused it to stop working. The laptop has been taken care of well and has had no falls or knocks. I would appreciate any input and thank you for your time in advance

Dear Lenovo forum, Is this working as intended? I have my computer set to sleep automatically when I close the lid. For example, I go to bed, close the lid, I wake up open the lid and it prompts me to use the fingerprint scanner or to type in the password manually. So I roll / put my finger that is recognized by  the scanner to try and log in, and 9/10 times it does not work. Instead I have to type in my password. But this defeats the whole purpose of me getting the T460p with the fingerprint scanner. The only way it works is if I start it up from sleep, type in my password, then close the lid again, slide/ roll my finger then it works and recognizes my fingerprint. How do I fix this ?? Thanks, P

I am new to a ThinkPad with fingerprint reader, but not to ThinkPads. Running Windows 7 64-bit. In Windows I installed the Lenovo Touch Fingerprint Software. I enrolled my fingerprints. Windows: It works well with Windows. Instead of logging in to Windows with password I can use the fingerprint. Next to deleting fingerprint data, only option I have in Settings is "Enable pre-boot authentication". Seems when I have this enabled, that windows will automatically log-in (not asking for password or fingerprint) if I used fingerprint to boot-up the computer during boot-time (enabled via BIOS). Boot/BIOS: I am a bit unsure how exactly this is configured via the BIOS. Only when I enable "boot password required" I will be asked to scan my fingerprint (or type the password). I assume it's meant this way. If boot password is disabled, I am not asked for the fingerprint at all. With boot password enabled, and that's strange to me, it would first ask me to scan the fingerprint and when I did so successfully, it will still require the password as well. I first scan my fingerprint, it gets a green checkmark (= success), then it shows the password icon, and next to it a hand which is crossed out, then a moment later I need to enter the password. Is it meant this way? Or should it be password OR fingerprint? Summary of settings (by choice): In Lenovo Touch Fingerprint Software i disabled "pre-boot authetication". This way I still need to ... Hello, when I install the Touch Fingerprint Software V 1.00.11 on my T460p running Win 764, it requires a drive C:\ for install. Software works if I have a drive C:\ but I intend to have WIN 10 on C:\ and WIN 7 on D:\ entirely separated fromn each other, so made C:\invisible for WIN 7. The driver install and other software worked well, just the Touch Fingerprint Software responds with: "The drive / UNC-path cannot be used; please choose another folder" ??Thank you in advance

Hi,I have T460p/Windows 7 x64 with Access Connections 6.26.88 (AC) installed. Laptop is not on domain, users are part of Administrators group. Administrator account is disabled.Access Connections worked for some time fine - new networks were detected and location profiles could be created, edited or deleted without any problems.Buttons for Create/Edit/Delete profile became disabled and I am not able to get this program working normally again. This happened after fingerprint reader stopped working for some reason.Fingerprint reader was used to log-in to system (and while logged with fingerprint I've created all the AC location profiles). While trying to restore fingerprint reader functions I had to unistall sowftware and erase all the fingerprint data and try to log-in with username/password (the same username as the fingerprint reader software autologin was attached to). This is the moment AC makes all the profiles as read-only.Now to restore Access Connections functions, I've tried several things:- ticked checkbox for non-admin users to be able to edit location profiles, but this did not help (all the profiles are still disabled, and even the new profiles are disabled from the start).- uninstalled AC, reboot, installed again (installation was done using admin account)...but no success, everything is the same - I cannot add or edit location profiles even I am operating as admin user,- tried with previous AC versions (79, 85) and new version (88) - but again no luck. But since th... I purchased my T460p 20FW000TUS last month it and came with Windows 7 - but the OS crashed at least once a day!   Even when I used F11 to reinstall Windows 7 it still continued to crash - I repeated this three times and it was still unstable!   I wanted to create a Windows 7 Product Recovery USB stick but for some reason was unable to! Because of this instability, I contact Lenovo Product Recovery Team and they dispatched me a Windows 10 Product Recovery USB stick.   I tried to install Windows 10 using this USB stick, but it wouldn't complete installation due to os freeze/hang at dowork.cmd.  I used ctl, alt, shift to close close down this command, but Windows would boot up.  I repaetd product recovery two more times and the same issue arose eeach time.    Mny hours later, now I don't have Windows 10 installed or Windows 7 installed and don't have any reliable product recoevry media, which seems an absurd situation to be in, with a one month old Thinkpad - a great machine but not operating system and no possibility of doing anywork! Kindly please help! Thankyou so much,Philip

This page shows where the product name and serial number should supposedly be displayed on my ThinkPad: https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/find-product-name?cid=EDM_2016_NA_US_PP_SUPPORT_V2&RRID=1014681098&... Howver, neither of these are displayed on my machine's exterior anywhere. I do happen to know the product name and serial number. I was able to find them other ways - that's not the issue. As far as I know, these physical labels should have come with the machine. Was this simply an error during assembly, or has Lenovo simply stopped putting on these labels? If the former, is there a way to request Lenovo send me these labels? If the latter, Lenovo might consider updating the page linked above. Any inisight would be duly appreciated.Nicholas

Lenovo ThinkPad T460p: After creating a recovery USB (16 GB) stick, I received this error at the end: "Windows detected that this program did not run correctly." This is a new machine pre-installed with Windows 7 Professional. Could you please tell me the likely reason for this error? The recovery files seemed to load onto the USB drive without a problem--no errors along the way, with the exception of that one Windows error at the end. Also, the Q: partition shows 10.5 GB; whereas the new recovery USB shows 10.8 GB used space. I did try the new USB after loading the recovery files, and it did boot up the machine just fine. Problem is, there's no way I can be certain that everything is intact, without actually attempting the complete recovery. I didn't go that far, of course, because I didn't want to wipe out my C: drive. Also, I understand that Windows allows the creation of only one backup copy of a recovery disk/usb (for reasons that make no sense to me); is there any restriction on number of times a user can do a system restore directly from the Lenovo Q: recovery partition? [See below.] From https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/ht077144 "Once a back up is created, choosing Recover Drive Space will reallocate the drive space in the Q partition to the C partition. This is a permanent change. The operating system and software recovery solution will no longer be available on the hard drive after completing this process." Does this... Read more

I left my T460p on running under battery while on vacation (presumably killing the battery) and when I came back I could no longer boot it back up regardless of whether it is plugged in or not. As soon as I plug in the power cord (and do NOT press the power button at all) the following automatically happens:Keyboard lights up momentarily, fan starts spinning, and green power button lights on5 seconds later fan stops spinning and green power button light turns off2 seconds later keyboard lights up momentarily, fan starts spinning again, and green power button light turns back on The laptop then stays in this last "mode" forever (if I press the power button then the green power light turns off and the fan turns off). Throughout all of this nothing is displayed on the screen. I also tried having the laptop connected to a monitor when I plug it in, but the monitor also doesn't display anything throughout all of this. I've tried unplugging everything and holding the power button for 30 seconds (something I found from googling around), but that did nothing. I also tried removing & re-seating the RAM (another random idea I found from searching), but, again, that did nothing.  Any idea as to what may be going on? Any suggestions? It is unusual that it seems like it is trying to boot up immediately when I plug in a power cable.

The laptop I purchased came new from the Lenovo outlet and arrived a couple weeks ago. However, I noticed from the moment I opened it that it would not complete the startup process.  The key word there is complete. After doing several BIOS resets and RAM reseatings for both of the cards, it will do one of these things:  1. Allow me to get access to the BIOS config settings via interrupting the normal startup process. Will let me change settings, but will not start from there. 2. Nothing at all. 3. Reach the Lenovo splash screen and then turn off again. 4. Look like it's going to start, but then the power lights (both the cover and the power button) will be on, the computer will be running and producing heat, and the screen will either be left on but black or off entirely. All of these possibilities occur regardless of whether or not the charger is plugged in. I ought to take it down to a repair shop, but it is incredibly inconvenient for me to do so and would like to only use it as a last resort. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Hello, I have had my Lenovo ThinkPad T460p a bit over a year now, and it was always fine. Today I try to open it (from night-long sleep) and it almost instantly turns off. I try to power it on, but nothing: no LED, no beep, nothing. After some online search through my mobile phone, I try this: I unplug the laptop from the main current plug in the wall, I remove the battery at the bottom of the laptop, and I then push the power button (ti flush the capacitor?). After that, when I put back the battery and the plug, and try to power it on, the whole keyboard LEDs get active (including the power LED) but then the whole laptop dies again without proceeding further in the boot. any idea how to fix this? There seems to be no emergency hole reboot unfortunately, and I have very important data on this laptop for my job.

I've recently done some stress testing and what I would consider light gaming (DOTA 2, CS:GO, some other low-stress titles on medium/low graphics settings) and have experienced ridiculous CPU temps. Within about 10 minutes of starting the activities the CPU temps will reach around 90 C and after about another 10 minutes, they will get as high as 100 C (max Tj for the i7 6820HQ). I feel like quite a few other people talk about doing a lot of the same activities and only reaching the mid 80s due to throttling or something else. When the throttling does kick in on my laptop, the temps will drop back down around high 80s C without noticeable impact to the activity, but it seems to still hover around 90 - 100 C a few minutes after it throttles hard. I don't want to HAVE to use power management to restrict the CPU clocks to base clock levels. I feel like this thing should be cooling itself well enough that I shouldn't need to do this anyway. I really like this laptop and don't think it should be facing this limitation. It is already restricted to 35W TDP on a 45W part and it STILL can't keep itself cool. Do I really need to crack this thing open and try re-applying thermal paste on the cooling solution to try to get it to cool better? I understand there's only so much Lenovo can do to make sure the right amount of thermal paste is applied to each part on an assembly floor, but temps this high are really unexpected. I was wondering if meanwhile it is possible to boot (let's say Kubuntu 16.04) from the internal SD slot. Right now I'm using a 32GB Sandisk USB dongle, which works perfectly for me, but there is this unused SD slot.Of course I read some topics throughout the internet and this forum, saying it wasn't possible (4-6 years ago) due to the SD card being connected to PCI-E bus so BIOS/UEFI can't access it. My UEFI-Version is 2.12 R07ET72W (2016-10-28).Notebook-Model is 20FW003MGE.On the SSD I'm using Win7 64 Pro. Is there a way now to boot from the SD card without an external card reader, or do I have to buy an aditional M2.2242 SSD, leaving the SD slot waiting for memory extension issues? Is there a list with supported M.2 SSDs? PS: Grub command ls doesn't recognize the SD card either.

Hello Everyone!I just recently bought a Thinkpad T460p to work on CAD softwares. But when I connect an external display to it(HP 24uh) it simply doesn't work. It seems the graphic card NVIDIA GeForce 940MX driver doesn't support it. It works fine with a projector. I used HDMI in both cases. I also updated the graphic card drivers but nothing seems to help.I am using Windows 10 64-bit Education edition. When I go to Control Panel>Display>Adjust Resolution it does shows up the display option but doesn't work. On the other hand when I go to Right click>Display settings and click on detect, it doesn't. But still shows the second display. I also tried with hotkeys for that, doesn't work. I am attaching the appropriate screenshots. Control Panel/Display/Adjust_resolution?Control Panel/Display/Adjust_resolution?Control Panel/Display/Adjust_resolution?Control Panel/Nvidia_Control_Panel?Right_click/Display Settings?Right_click/Display Settings?  I would really appreciate if this problem is fixed. Just received this unit T460p with the WQHD IPS 2560x1440 and NVIDIA GeForce 940MX, and the color profile seems to be way off. If I open MS Paint and fill a square with 50% Gray, I get what looks like a brownish color. Also, when viewing pictures of people online, they basically look orange. This unit being so new, is this normal?! I am wondering if the panel itself is bad, or just the color profile. Even with the ICC file from NotebookCheck.net (ICC File (X-Rite i1Pro 2)) it's still horrible. I can get close to normal by editting the colors, but this seems ridiculous on such a new and high-end unit. Is this just an issue with Lenovo not doing their homework first, or is it possible the display is no good? I don't want to send it back, just to have them send it back with the same issue, anyone else having issues with theirs? My current HP Elitebook is spot on with its colors, this thing off by a mile.

Hi.  I bought this laptop just over a year ago and have generally had good experience with it.  My only issue has been with the battery.  When I first started using it, the battery would last about 10 hours which became 4 hours a few months later.  I decided to buy a new battery (thinking it was a faulty battery), and it did the same thing.  I got in touch with Lenovo tech while it was still under warranty, and they tried a few things on my laptop (remotely) but couldn't resolve the issue.  Now I have two batteries that last just about 3-4 hours on full charge.  It is really frustrating since one of the major selling points for me was the advertised battery life. If anyone has any experience or expertise with this, and can help in any way... please DO   I would like to know if there's anything I can do to diagnose the issue and/or fix it? Thanks/Sam

As in the screen does not detect any display. I usually use a 2 external screen setups. It is rather frustrating when this happens. I have changed the cables and screens in the beginning. Hoping that someone on this forum can help me. I have a 1 yr old thinkpad T460p which is refusing to boot at all after setting Intel AMT to be disabled in BIOS - its bricked. After making this change, laptop rebooted and displayed message "unconfiguring..." After that, it went to just a white cursor in the top left corner that doesn't flash. I left it for5 minutes or so before trying to reboot and now... I can't get anything except this white cursor. The machine still seems responsive - I can turn keyboard locks on and off and if I do control alt delete I see the screen flash and then come back to the cursor so it is definitely rebooting. I've tried rebooting and holding down F1, F8 as well as pretty much every other key on the keyboard. I've taken out battery and AC, held power for 30 seconds then plugged back in and its still stuck! Does anyone have an idea how to get this laptop to boot again? I can't enter BIOS at all, just this white cursor in the corner of the screen.

A:help! thinkpad t460p bricked after disabling intel AMT - no BIOS/UEFI

First, do you have warranty remaining?  If yes, call for service; don't take it apart.

If no, do the same thing you did (remove battery, etc.) plus disconnect the coin-cell (CMOS) battery.  You remove the back cover and it is to the lower right.  Let it sit for 30 seconds before putting it back together.  This will reset the BIOS to default settings.  DON'T DO THIS IF YOU HAVE A SUPERVISOR (BIOS) PASSWORD THAT YOU DO NOT KNOW.

I have a ThinkPad T460P. Some time ago it fell off to the side of couch while plugged in and bent the adapter / end of charger insert upon impact. After i would receive a "plugged in but not charging" message. I could still get this machine to charge if i closed it and inserted the charger, let it sit, and then open. Somewhat inconsistent but it worked. Finally the other day i was running a video and the battery drained completely without realizing it was not charging. I received a critically low battery message. Charger no longer worked and machine would not turn on. I bought a new 90W charger to see if it would do the trick. When i plug this in, the light above the thinkpad sign and also the light in power button flashes 3 times but then nothing else. Normally this light would strobe. The charger appears to work as the light near the port has gone from yellow to green. But the machine no longer turns on. Sometimes i can get it to flash when pressing the power but nothing. Also tried a number of tricks like taking the battery out, holding the power button for a while, putting all back in and trying again. Machine will also not turn on when plugged in without the battery in. Thoughts? Am i cooked here?

I have a fingerprint reader (UPEK Eikon) and Windows 7 Ultimate (for this problem it is the same as Vista).

Whenever I lock my computer it will show the fingerprint icon with information on scanning my fingerprint. I want it to show my user picture with my name on it and a password field, like it will if I hit "Switch User" and click on my picture.

How do I get it to do this?

Hello, I currently have a Thinkpad T460p with the following configuration: - i7 6820HQ @ 2.7 GHz- 2 TB Samsung 850 EVO- 32 GB 2133 MHz DDR4 RAM (2x16 GB sticks rated for up to 2400 MHz)- NVIDIA GeForce 940MX- WQHD Display- No WWAN and no Smart Card Reader- Fingerprint Scanner- Backlit Keyboard - 72 WH Battery- 135 W AC Adapter I am running the latest version of Windows (1903) and my BIOS is at R07ET89W 2.29, also the latest version according to Lenovo Vantage. All my drivers are up to date. Windows is also up to date.  I have noticed that my computer never reaches 100% CPU Utilization and it never turbos to 3.6 GHz. If I recall correctly, Lenovo locked the TDP of this processor to 35W as opposed to the 45W it could also run on. Is this why my computer is never able to utilize the CPU at 100% nor is it able to reach 3.6 GHz? Upon observation, I have never seen this laptop go above 3.4 GHz, and that's very rare.  I applied synthetic load to the computer via prime95. The program is able to max out my RAM, but it cannot even get my processor to utilize above 75%. It's usually just at around 56-68% utilization during the stress test, but it's mostly at the lower side. Clock speeds don't go above 1.78 GHz during the prime95 stress test, usually even closer to 1.50 GHz.   I tried using a simpler stress test via CPUID. I could only get the processor close to 65% and clocks speeds are around 1.74-1.79 GHz.  I a... Read more

Hi,This post consists of rant as well as seeking a solution because with these cheap Chinese products, one cannot accept quality. More so with Lenovo. To begin with:I purchased this laptop T460p in 2016 . For almost 10 months it worked fine. Then one fine day it refused to boot up. Tried removing the battery, power-recycling by pressing the power button for 30 secs etc. but nothing worked. It did not even show the Lenovo-splash screen or the option to go to BIOS.The system power light would glow, fan would be working indicating that something wrong went with the display.Tried connecting to an external display, but even that did not work.I was in India at that time.It being under warranty, sent it to the service centre in US. When they powered it up at the service centre, it booted up to the desktop. Still they decided to keep it under observation. Finally they concluded that motherboard need to be replaced. Then started the ordeal.Motherboard was replaced. I was told that new motherboard had warranty for only 2 months(strange). At the same time, the technician damaged the keyboard, so replaced it too.But it seems like the headphone jack was not connected properly. On receving the laptop, we did not check if the headphne jack was working or not. The system speakers were working fine though.A month later when i tried using the headphone, to my horror realised that the headphones were not working.Tried all solutions from driver update etc but nothing worked. Tried other h... Read more

I installed it on my notebook Fingerprint Reader Suite v.5.8.2 (UPEK). The problem is that in the "Welcome" screen of Vista, as well as in the "Locked" screen appears whenever two icons: one icon is my username with my profile picture; while the other is the icon of the fingerprint reader that says "Logon fingerprint. swipe your finger."

Previously, I used the fingerprint reader and appeared only my profile picture, full size, in welcome and my name of the user account and the field screen to enter the password below image.

It was enough just slide your finger to login and not two icons appeared on the screens of "welcome" / "locked".

Can anyone help me telling how do I remove the icon from the Fingerprint Reader welcome screen and leave only my profile picture with my name and field to enter the password?

Thanks!

I wasn't sure if this was the place for this but here goes.

when using the fingerprint scanner on a network with pasword changes every 90days, does the fingerprint scanner on a lenovo laptop synch properly with a newly updated password? I have a user here who changed the password but the fingerprint scanner did not seem to recognize the change since when you first set it up it asks for your current password. Once setup correctly all you have to do is scan your fingerprint and it logs you in.

Any info would be great.

Thanks,

Hi! I have recently purchased a Thinkpad L480 and the fingerprint reader only worked very breefly after setup. Now, whenever I try to setup my fingerprint in windows hello the device seems as it would recognize a fingerprint without a finger on the reader (reader is clean). The fingerprint setup assistant shows a short flashing of the fingerprint icon as it would recognize a finger and then continues with only painting the innermost line of the fingerprint red and stops to detect any input. As mentioned breefly after windows setup the fingerpringt scanner worked. After a relog the scanner stopped working. I tried deleting and setting up a new fingerprint, when the problem first occured. All drivers are up to date. The latest windows version is used. Thanks in advance!
