CD Rom suddenly not showing up in device management/computer etc in Vista &wont eject

Q: CD Rom suddenly not showing up in device management/computer etc in Vista &wont eject

Yesterday I was burning a CD of some of my music to take to work and listen to. After burning 4-5 songs there was an error (windows media player) and it could not burn the rest.

I hit OK and exited the program, then went to eject myCD, and it did not open. So I go to My Computer to select eject, adn there is no cd drive lsited all of a sudden, and not one in Divice manager either.
The LED light on the cd rom is still glowing green constantly, but it will not respond or try to open when I press eject. And it makes no sounds as if it is trying to read a disc or such.
I tried system restoring to 2 days ago, but it did not fix the problem. I've tried unhooking it, and hooking it back up to no avail. I have tried the Mr Fixit program from the microsoft site, and it DETECTS the problem, and syas 'CDrom/Drive not being recognized" or such, but has a red X next to it saying it could not resolve the problem.
I have also tried going intoo regedit, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control/Class/
{4D36E965-E325 -11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} Then deleting Upper and lower filters (mine only had upper) and rebooting. And still nothing.

This is very frustrating since I am an avid computer gamer and can no longer insert my game discs to play/etc.

I'd be beyond thankful if someone could help me fix this soon, and please put it in turns/steps I can understand. Aside from gaming and internet, I am a tech novice.

Thank you so much in advance!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: CD Rom suddenly not showing up in device management/computer etc in Vista &wont eject

Its likely a physical hardware problem. Open up the case, disconnect and reconnect both the power and data cables(on both ends) and see if the drive opens. If not the drive may have failed. The drive should even open with just the power cable connect and the data cable connected, so as a last test try ejecting the tray with only the power connected.

DVD/CD drive is not listed on "Computer" nor on "Disk Management"

Windows "Trouble shooting" reports "TSSTcorp CDDVDW TS-L633J" is missing (or corrupted ?)

With a DVD movie in the drive, the drive spins up but does not auto play. It just spins down and stops. The drive is not listed in VLC.

Four days ago I uninstalled (using RevoUninstaller) some ancient apps I never use with a restore point before each uninstall. 4-Feb, 5-Feb
1. CloneDVD2.exe
2. AnyDVD.exe ... this one was a ring in (unsolicited)
- both by SlySoft.com ... there is an obvious omen in there ...

I have tried 3 system restores, one each before the unstalls and one a daily (1-Feb) system restore. Each System Restore failed.

On the third "fail" (1-Feb) I decided to try Windows Troubleshooter, targeting devices and hardware

After the attempted fix ...

I am way in over my head, this is the first system Restore I have done in 25 years.

For the past 12 months I have been reading up on virual drives, imaging, OEM backup, recue discs etc ... all a bit late for todays dilema.
I have never made a media disc of the OEM -- could I do that onto a USB stick (or USB pocket drive) or must it be a CD/DVD ?
recently I made a "Rescue Disc" for my new unused Lenovo ... so I am learning

How would I know if it is a hardware or a driver problem ?

Would appreciate some help, thank you

A:DVD/CD drive not showing on Computer nor Disk Management

Any easy hardware check: Try booting from bootable CD/DVD. Boot from CD/DVD is handled by BIOS (and before Windows even starts running). So if it boots from media OK, it's a windows issue

To check Windows, download and run Filter Load Order Tool. Is the DVD drive listed in the display? If so, select it then hit the Clipboard button in the display. Paste the results into next post

Hi all,
I had a problem of Windows 7 x64 Pro not seeing my 8TB Seagate USB HDD no matter what I tried, it just would not show anywhere except in "Devices and printers" and there was nothing I could do with it there!
After several weeks and hours spent on the net searching for an answer I struck the resolution by chance, because i like to fiddle about my operating system.
In case someone is still facing such a problem of external USB HDDs not being recognized and not even showing in "My Computer" or in "Disk Management" (as I had), here is what I did to resolve this problem:
1. Open "Device Manager>Universal Serial Bus Controllers",
2. Look for the USB "Mass Storage Device" and uninstall it by selecting it and hitting the "Uninstall" menu button at the top (with the red X on it),
3. Do a "Scan for hardware changes", the system will find and install the appropriate drivers and you should be able to find and use your device now.
I hope this will be of help to someone.

Hi all,

I'm having a problem with a 3TB Western Digital Red drive.

It does not show up in My Computer, Disk Management or Device Manager or diskpart >> list volume.
Also a no show in the Western Digital Data LifeGuard Diagnostics tool and CrystalDiskInfo.

It does show up in BIOS (See screenshot) and also in the Intel Rapid Storage Technology tool (See screenshot)
In both places it is showing as 0GB though.

What I've tried:
Unplugged all other drives except the C Drive and the 3TB WD, same result as above.
Unplugged all other drives except the 3TB WD and launched the installation CD for both Windows 7 and XP to see if either would recognise it. Neither did.

I'm out of ideas (I did see a few things online I didn't try, like uninstall the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers from the Device Manager, since I don't really know what that means I didn't)

This is my first build. Just getting Windows 8 on the SSD was a minor adventure on its own.

i7 2600
Windows 8 on new 60gb OCZ SSD - Shows in Computer Management.
New 2tb WD Green - Shows. Formatting right now.
2tb WD Green - Shows but as unformatted - working on this w/ testdisk.
1tb WD Green - Shows.
1tb WD Green - Does not show.
250gb WD not sure of series - Does not show - this was my last comp's main C drive w/ Vista. Sata is through a Vantec PCI-E card. The user manual was very confusing & I have not installed any drivers for the card. There were dozens, several required copying the drivers to then installing from old-school floppies (who still has those?!), & they all read like they assumed a RAID array.
500gb Seagate - Does not show. Also using the PCI-E card.

Just to anticipate a few of the simpler answers: Yes all the drives' pertinent cables are all attached in the appropriate places & yes, they all worked fine before-hand. Well, okay the Seagate was wonky. Forget the Seagate.

I believe the problem was caused when i tried plugging in a ps/2 mouse when the computer was on...the next time i shut it down and restarted was when the problem occured

SO basically, i'm doomed.

when i plug the damn thing in, SOMETIMES windows will say that it is "not recognized", and SOMETIMES Windows won't say nuthin at all. jsyk i've tried 5 times, and only one time windows responded with that uplifting message.

i tried searching for the device in my computer, not there. there is no "removable disk" icon either.

i also tried going into disk management, not there either.

oh and i've also tried this on 2 other computers.

SO therefore I assume that the thing is un-salvageable. UNLESS of course one of you angels reveal that it is not actually a goner, and that i can actually still access it and save my life. in which case it would just mean i'm a complete tech noob. however, that optimistic situation seems highly unlikely, and therefore i shall return to my assumption that i am doomed.

seeing as life is so, is there any way i can recover my data from the thumbdrive? and no, i can't send it back to the dealer because i never actually bought the thing; it was given as a door gift at someone's birthday. IKR.

so yeah.

Hello everyone. My first post here, and I really hope someone out there might be able to help. I'm pretty worried about losing all my files.

I have had a Western Digital externall hard drive permanently attached to my wife's old desktop PC (which runs XP) for a year or so. I've always been very pleased with it - it connected perfectly, and it has always just shown up in My Computer there as an extra drive. Perfect. However, that PC was getting old and the memory nearly full, so I copied all my important files (family photos, etc.) to my WD HDDm disconnected it from the old desktop, connected it to my much newer laptop (which runs Windows 7), and hey presto - it appeared in Computer. Again, perfect, no problem. However, I realised that I had not transferred all the files I needed from the old desktop to the HDD, so I had tp disconnect the HDD from the laptop and reconnect it to the desktop again with the intention of transferring the files I'd forgotten to transfer first time around. And this time, the HDD did not appear in My Computer. It DID appear in the little icon, bottom screen right, which you click to safely remove something, and it did show up in Devices, it just didn't show up in My COmputer, so I couldn't access it. The exact same thing happened when I tried to connect it back to my laptop - it's there in the "safely remove" icon and in Devices, but not in My Computer.

Webcam undetected, is Unknown Device in Computer Management

Logitec C160 Webcam (was operating under XP)
- moved to a Win 7 Premium PC
- Logitech Webcam Software doesn't detect Webcam
- Computer Management shows it as Unknown Device
- Webcam shows no sign of life (should it anyway?)

Steps Taken
- Checked compatibility (rated for XP , Vista, Win 7 and Win 8.1)
- Logitec sourced 160 lws251.exe installed (re downloaded/ re installed several times)
- Uninstalled Driver attempted Update (won't see drivers in Logitec install folder)
- Tried different USB ports
- Tested USB ports
- Consulted Logitec site (very helpful **cough)
- Followed these steps and repeated three times.
USB Driver - General Fix for Problems
- Said some bad words

What I don't know
- Anything specific to Webcams (never used this one myself)
- Whether Logitec 160 lws251.exe actually includes drivers (must assume yes)

(original XP machine has had a melt down, so unavailable for cross checking)

I'm stumped any suggestions?

Have recently formatted my laptop and re installed Windows on my normal HDD because i have a small SSD since formatting my SSD and deleting and renewing the old partition, in windows explorer and disk management i can no longer see my SSD. I can see my SSD in Bios and in the Intel Rapid storage technology app, but cannot understand why i cannot use my SSD, Any help would be much appreciated.

Kind regards

A:SSD not showing in Disk Management, but showing on Intel Rapid Storage

Could we get some more information?

Does this laptop have 2 hard drive bays? Did it always have 2 hard drives?
What does "deleting and renewing the old partition" mean?

What I suspect is that the SSD has a partition that is still marked ACTIVE. Windows will boot from one Active partition and ignore the other. So if the SSD has just one partition that is marked active then the whole drive would be ignored.

If you deleted the partition in Disk Management or some 3rd party program then that would have taken care of the Active flag on that partition. But if you just deleted the contents of the partition that would have left the flag.

Let us know what you did.

EDIT: I should add: any partition that contained an operating system will have the active flag. This is not something you would have had to do yourself.

Okay. My little brother was on my dad's computer. He was playing a flash game and listening to music on WMP. Suddenly, WMP came up with an error saying the media was corrupt, and the blue screen of death came up. I didn't see what the blue screen's error was, but when the computer reset, it came up with "Boot Device Not Found".
We reset the computer manually, letting it sit for a minute unplugged. It booted up slower than normal, but otherwise properly. We then ran chkdsk, it said that the Master File Table's BITMAP was incorrect. We then ran chkdsk /scan as it told us to, and it said there were no errors in the filesystem.
Are the errors gone? If not, what should I do to fix them?

I have an external hard drive full of images extracted from movies. every frame extracted, we're talking over 1,000,000 pictures per folder. In order for me to even view the thumbnails in a timely fashion, I set the drive to optimize for performance instead of quick removal so I MUST use the "safely remove hardware function" as indicated when I set up that setting, "You must always use the safely remove hardware function in the task bar", when I don't, I get an error message that I unplugged a device without stopping it which can cause damage to the device, but I cannot stop it because every time I try, I get the following error:
"This device is currently in use. Close any programs or windows that might be using the device, and then try again."
so basically if I try to properly eject the device, I get that error message, if I just pull the plug, I get a message that I could damage the device.
There are no open windows with that drive and there are no programs on the drive nor any program open accessing any of the files on the drive.
How do I fix this?

A:'This device is currently in use" when trying to eject drive set for performance

This is a problem that's been going on for a long time. Fortunately the way Windows deals with external disks means that the likelihood of actually damaging your drive is low, unlike if you were to do the same thing on a Linux machine.
I only know of one way to deal with this... it's a little complex, but for the safety of your data it might be worth it to you.
Rather than copying it I'll just link the article here for you.
You can also open your task manager and look for programs that may be using the device and kill them manually there, though I've found that hard to succeed with in the past.

I use a USB stick to synchronize my data between two laptops. Before removing I always try to be a nice guy and I properly "Eject" the device by right-clicking the task manager icon and selecting the stick.

But why do I EACH and EVERY time get the message that Windows is currently unable to eject the device because it is still busy. When I do the same a second time, it is always "Safe to remove the device...".

I find that quite annoying! Why is that always so and why can't Windows simply internally try a few times and then report success on first attempt?

A:Why is Windows ALWAYS unable to eject my device on first try?

Yeah I've noticed that, too, with Windows 10. Generally the message means that something is still accessing the device.

To be honest I haven't cared enough to investigate the actual cause, but I'm posting to let you know that you're not the only one.

Cannot even tell what you are talking about, with all of that junk in that rectangle. How many programs are you running, that are showing up in the Task area? Third party software from one of those programs is why your icon changed.

diskmgmt.msc, open disk manager, if you have a mapped network drive you will find the USB device has been assigned the same drive letter. Right click on your removable drive and choose "Change Drive Letter or Paths..." and assign a different letter.

Open "My Computer" and the drive should be there. Next time you connect it, it will pop-up with a newly assigned letter.

Hi there

Using INCD Cd formatting program from Nero.
After saving to CD-RW the only way the CD can be ejected is by right clicking on the CD Rom Desktop Icon and clicking eject.
Is this going to cause a problem and can it be fixed. CD just keeps running otherwise.
Cheers Graham

A:CD drive wont eject?

hi and welcome to the forums
now there should be a little hole on the front of the drive that you put a paperclip into(bend the paper clip out) to release the drive catch.(with the power off)
in the computer menu find the cd drive and see if you can right click on it and in the context menu click eject?(see video)

EDITED: Original Question: How can I add the eject/safely remove choice back into the explorer context menu?

New Question:
Ok well now I want to ask a different question. Does anyone know how to properly edit the registry to add such a key. When I'm in the devices & printers window the option is available via right click. Therefore, I searched for eject in the registry and found an entry in the shell section of DeviceDisplayObject which is the controller (I hope) for that Devices & Printers window. I'm assuming this is the correct key.

It's located at:

Now I've attempted to copy that and move it to places such as the global context menu area (ROOT\*\Shell\) and (ROOT\Drive\shell\). However, no matter where I add it it won't work. Maybe something in the shellex line below it is required as well, I don't know. Maybe I'm just cloning it wrong.

If anyone has experience give it a try.

NOTE: I don't want to open the menu for ejecting a disk, I want the right click item to actually eject the disk. Also, I know how to create a shortcut to open the ejection menu.

A:Right Click Context Menu - Eject USB Device?

I used to unplug an external drive in Vista without the need to click on the safely remove icon. In 7 the prompting for missing device will be seen when not doing that for a flash drive however.

With or without clicking on the green icon in the system tray the drive letter to certain flash drives will still be maintained. If the brand like San Disk sees an automatic appearance when first plugged in with a small screen with the brand name on it then you click the safely remove option to stop the prompting.

Whenever I'm in the Windows environment (meaning not doing anything in full-screen mode), the "Device Eject Sound" (the little do do do do that plays whenever you eject a device) will constantly play at almost random. Sometimes itll play three times in a row right after the other, sometimes it wont happen for a minute then go nuts, etc. etc. It seems almost entirely random.

Any ideas?

Do you have any USB devices connected to your PC?
If yes, check that the cables are properly seated in their sockets.

I'd pay particular attention to your mouse cable & connections (assuming you have a USB mouse).

Being a tech guy I have about 50 Usb mass strage devices of ever size, shape, brand, and flavor. From external hard drives to those cheapy free flash drives you get at CES nothing will work on this particular machine, running Vista Ultimate 32bit. Yes these 50 usb starge devices work in many other machines on many operating sytems. This is a problem Ive had for a while, dont know when it started. Having quite a few netwroked computers, and this one not being my main system, Ive just been to busy or lazy in deal with the problem. Im sure yall wanna know the symptoms so here it is.

plug in any usb mass storage device.
get a little pop up saying USB device not recognized
"Unknown Device" appears under USB Controllers in Device manager with no installed driver ("no drivers are installed for this device")

Oh other usb things do work just in case you ask like this keyboard and mouse.
So hopful I just need a new driver/reinstall the drive.

A:Vista wont recognize any usb mass storage device

Uninstall the USB ports in Device Manager

Just rt- click and select uninstall on all of the USB drivers.
They will reinstall when you reboot.
If you lose your mouse, hold in the power button to reboot.

See if that does anything for you.

Hey There,

I could really do with some help, every USB device I plug in will not work,
when i plug something in like my mouse for instance it does come up with new hardware found but cannot locate or install drivers, I have the instalation disk with the drivers and these ARE installed, also it was fine before, when I first purchased my mouse logitech MX Air I simply plugged it in and it recognised it and installed the drivers did'nt even need 3rd party software now it says "unknown device" and cannot find the drivers either from the disk or windows update, it is like this on every device even on simple things like usb hubs and memory sticks, it recomends that I download Hotfix KB940199 as this may resolve the problem but i get an error message pop up everytime saying this does not apply to your system (it is the x64 hotfix) argggh how frustrating PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE HELP I cant use half the equiptment I have because of this problem,

Many thanks

I have a USB/serial device connected. However, there's always a system tray notification icon saying it's safe to eject/remove that device. It's a permanently connected device like a printer or scanner; it never gets disconnected.

On my 2 prior W7 clean installs, I never had this issue. Another inconsistency.

Should I remove the device and reinstall the driver?

BTW, re: drivers...I've never seen any webpage that describes in any detail the ins and outs of drivers as it relates to the "stack" (Driver Details) of programs (dll/sys). As well, in said device (above), I've downloaded the driver yet when I connected, Windows downloaded it. I've not seen a good explanation as to how YOU point Windows to a folder or wherever such that it uses THAT driver.

How do I know where the installed software will put that driver? Do you point to a folder and the driver install process will scan the whole folder TREE? Or, must it be in that folder? How am I supposed to know what the name of the driver is when it's installed as a part of many other software items? The questions go on and on.

A:safely remove h/w (eject) icon for permanent device

The printer should have native win 7 drivers, and a quickstart guide - did you follow the quickstart guide?

I am running windows 7 on my laptop, I have an Hitachi 1tb external harddrive which I know that I must eject to avoid damage to the files on thedevice. When i plug it in it works perfectly but when I go to eject it windows keeps showing the pop up saying its still in use so I close all programs- onlythe ones that work in the background are left- but it still says its being used and i don’t see how. Therefore I can either shut my laptop down or take a chance simply removing the usb lead- I dont believe its being used but i dont want to risk losing my files.

This happens not only with my external harddrive but with all my external devices but the harddrive wories me the most due to the risk of corrupted files.

Is there a solution to this problem or is there a program that may be usingit in the backround? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
