Windows 7 Smart Card Login Issue

Q: Windows 7 Smart Card Login Issue

We use a Smart Card for two factor authentication to RDP into servers. However, when the card is inserted and your desktop gets locked, when you go to unlock it defaults to the Smart card instead of the credentials you logged in with. Is there
a way to turn off the smart card for the Windows interactive login but still have it available for RDP sessions?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Okay, so I wanted to set up my computer to log in via smart card as a secondary way to enter. I have a CAC and a CAC reader and I got them working. Here's the problem. I set the login via smart card enabled but it never setup a user or even registered my CAC as a login.... so now I am stuck locked out of my computer and every time I put in my pass code it says "you must use a smart card to sign in". How can I bypass this or reset my computer? This kinda erks me I jumped a coupe steps and jacked this up.

You're probably going to want to use Bitlocker with your smart card. This will effectively encrypt your drive/files so that they are only accesible via your smart card. This is a good strategy to use if you have a backup of your smart card in the event that it's lost or destroyed.

Using Smart Cards with BitLocker

Note: In order to use Bitlocker to encrypt your home system you will need to upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate or Enterprise, as all other versions do not come with Bitlocker. You could always use a different authentication method
TrueCrypt is an open source security program which allows you to encrypt your entire hard drive or specific file sets. You can require a password and/or a key file in order to log in. This could feasibly be done with a smart card I believe.

My advice would be to use TrueCrypt to encrypt a particular portion of your hard drive in which you store all of your sensitive files. This would allow you to log into your computer without enhanced security yet you wouldn't be able to access your secure files without a different password and keyfile. You can enhance this security with KeePass, an open source password storage utility which can store encrypted passwords. This type of software enables you to use extremely long and complicated passwords without the need to rem... Read more

Hi everebody,
The problem with the user interface appears, when using authorization by the smart card. If your password has expired on a domain account, and you has trying to log on, Windows reports: ?your password has expired and must be changed?
If you press «OK» button, when displays a blank screen with a single button «Cancel». After it has come back to login screen.

Accordingly, there are two problems:
1)  The user cannot log into the system (because of cycling process :)
2) The user does not know to which account (PIN or domain account) he must change password.
Two question:
1. Does it happen by design?

2. How I can cope with a problem?
PS If I make an immortal password (password never expires), I get a security threat. If I leave only authorization for the smart card (user setting:
smartcard required for interactive logon), the user can not log on to the web interface of mail, such as a house, etc.

I was playing around with local group policy with smart card settings, and I checked "Force smart card login". I never set up smart card certificates to be used, and don't have any smart cards for it to work with. I need to login to the computer, but when I try, it says "You must insert a smart card to login". I am using the local administrator account, and tried a few ways to bypass it including;
safe mode
disabling smart card in BIOS
remote desktop

When I go home, I will try using ERD commander, and windows recovery console to stop the smart card service. BTW I am using TinyXP rev.05

The TV im working with here is:Samsung UN46F6300 46-Inch 1080p 120Hz Slim Smart LED HDTV (2013 Model)
Im trying to create a simple looped slide show to display for my team members at work. I make custom images for the slide show in Adobe illustrator and export them as JPEG. Then I just load the .JPGs into a main directory of a USB drive, pop the drive into the TV, select USB as the Input on the TV and hit Play.
Here's the issue. After I hit Play, the screen goes black for a few moments before rebooting back to the smart UB main menu. So I think my image is somehow making the application crash.  Is there a file size the JPEGS need to be for the tv to read them without crashing?
Does anyone know a better way to go about doing this?

A:Samsung Smart tv Smart HUB slideshow Issue

I am not familiar with Adobe's current product range so I went and looked at their web-site. On my reading it is very good at creating graphics but is not designed to create either video or slide show type presentations. Personally for what you describe I would use either MS Powerpoint (part of the MS Office suite) or Libre Impress (part of the Libre Office suite).
I don't think your image size would be the problem but you could try sizing your images to 1920x1080 pixcels which is the resolution of your TV.

I was using Axcrypt with Excel 2010 in Windows 7 with no problem: Double-clicked on a file, entered my Axcrypt password, used the file with macros enabled, closed the file; and Axcrypt automatically re-encrypted it.
Then I switched to Windows 8.1. In order to use a file with macros enabled, I now have to decrypt the file, then open it and use it, then close it, then manually reencrypt it with Axcrypt. If I try to just double-click on the file, Windows 8 asks me for a Smart Card and does not allow me to enable macros.
I tried enabling and disabling the three Smart Card services (named "Smart Card", "Smart Card Device Enumeration Service", and "Smart Card Removal Policy") but that didn't help. Perhaps I have to enable one (and maybe some related services) and disable the others? Anyone know?
I tried adding the Axcrypt temp path (C:\Users\userID\Appdata\Local\Temp\Axcrypt3) to the trusted locations, but Windows 8 won't allow me to add the Local\Temp folders as trusted locations.
Besides being a real time-waster, this problem necessitates my remembering which files I'd decrypted so that I can subsequently re-encrypt them all. Anyone know how to get around this issue?
Thank you for your help.

For the servers which do not require smart card login I can change domain user passwd by clicking ctrl+alt+del
For the servers which requires Smart card login when I try to change domain user password again it checks smart card and after that give an alert like smart card drivers are not installed for this operation.
I want to keep smart card login but I do not want it to require smart card login to change domain user password.
Do anyone know a way?

Hi there
I haven't tried this yet but maybe later this wek when I get some spare time.

If you have a phone with a separate micro sd card of large enough capacity could you install windows to go on it and then use this as a USB ext drive on a laptop to boot Windows to go. These cards are now available up to 32 GB which is PLENTY for a small W8 installation.

In theory it should work -- but I've never tried the approach with a micro sd card. The micro sd card appears as an exte drive to the laptop so if the laptop can boot from a usb drive then it should work similarly to a USB stick.

I can see the advantages to having a portable Windows OS on a smartphone internal memory card. (Note the Windows OS will be booted on to a laptop --not the smart phone itself).

A:Bootable Windows to go on internal micro sd card on smart phone !!

It won't work from a normal card since I am not aware of any bios that can boot from the integrated card reader.

Perhaps it can work if the card reader is attached to the system by USB, but even that is doubtful since the boot loader probably won't know how to look at the card reader as a device. This is certainly the way to try though, if any.

We are currently in our pre-deployment test phase for Windows 8.1 and are trying to knock out the high visibility problems that we notice.  One of the issues we've noticed:
When logging into Windows, the default prompt is for a username/password.  all of our users are using smart cards, so they have to click "sign-in options", click the smart card icon, and then enter their PIN.  How would I change the startup
screen to default to smart card?

Also, when locking the screen by removing the card it again prompts for the username/password when unlocking the screen.  So the users again have to click on "sign-in options" and select the smart card, otherwise they risk locking out their
account by entering the PIN in the username/password field.

when locking the screen via ctrl-alt-del or windows-L unlocking does default to the smart card, so I know it can be done!

Also, this *might* help remove the picture:

Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Control Panel > User Accounts
Disable Apply the default user...

Hi, this is my first post here but this forum always shows up in my search result

I googled over and over about my issue, but I can't figure out how to fix it.

Here's what is happening:

since I installed Net Framework from Windows Update every time I start my notebook, before I can type my password, I have to click on the account picture even though there is only one account

I know it may seems sick to ask about something like this, but it's indeed really annoying!

I found something about "Control userpasswords2", but that would bypass the typing of the password too.. and I need it.

Thanks in advice

Hi All

Right I recently had the dreaded critical error message when I clicked on my start menu, and nothing I did solved the problem. So I added a new user and this worked and the start menu worked again.
I then swapped over the administration rights to the new user and made the old user account (one with the critical error) a standard user account.
However I didn't write down the password anywhere, now I cant login into the new user. So I can even add a new user (if I wanted to) as the original user account doesn't have administration rights.
Does anyone have any idea how to get round this? I have tried the cmd and tried the net user option to change the password but I get a system error 5 message.

I was using AutoRuns in conjunction with some other software to clean my system of crapware and decrease startup time (worked!) but after my second session of it, when Windows booted up, it didn't boot to the pretty login screen with all the accounts listed, instead it presented an NT-like login option where we have to type in the account name. It does this when we try to switch accounts and what not. It's not critical to get it fixed, but it is annoying since we can no longer have multiple people logged in at once. I'm not sure if I disabled a necessary function but with AutoRuns I had it hide all verified, signed microsoft files so I couldn't screw up my system.

Hi, I am not sure if i should be posting this on this forum, or another, but here goes !

I have searched and search for an answer to this for two days

I have upgraded to Windows 8.1 and now my computer boots into 'other user'.

I then have to click ok - which tells me that my username and password are not valid - and then a back arrow, which takes me to a logon screen with icons for me, my nephew (who is a child user) and 'other user' (who does not exsist as far as I know, I do not have a guest account activated. I then have to click me!

Any ideas on how to it stop this, and boot straight into me, please?

You may have a Temporary Profile loading. It's a complicated fix but doable, you have to log in to Safe Mode Admin Account to do it:
System loads "Temporary Profile"

Read through that, there is a link to a fix for it.

I have an irritating issue.

There is just a single user (administrator) account on my system which I have recently password protected - previously no p/w was set.

Since adding the p/w, on boot the login screen automatically shows "The username or password is incorrect" even before a p/w has been entered.

I can click on OK and enter the correct p/w and the system continues to load Win 7 without issue. So, it's not a significant problem but it is annoying and my OCD kicks in hard as clearly it shouldn't do this.

Anyone have any solutions? Thanks in advance.

So a friend of mine just got a new Asus laptop that came pre-installed with Windows 8. So on powering up it asked him the basic windows 8 first time setup info. He gave his name etc. but gave a yahoo.com email address instead of a microsoft account (hotmail etc.). So now that he has restarted the PC it takes him to the Windows 8 password login screen which prints his name and yahoo.com email (read-only) and below that the password box. It does not however accept the password he gave when he setup Windows 8. It gives some message about not being able to sign in at this time and please visit account.live.com

Here is where it becomes even more frustrating. In his yahoo.com inbox he has a bunch of automated emails from microsoft about confirming his microsoft account and to click on the confirm link. However this just opens a new tab and takes him to the typical microsoft account login page?? Basically by entering a non-microsoft email address it has stopped him being able to use Windows 8.

Laptop did not come with any OS disks and cannot get in to windows, because of above issue, to make a recovery disk. Found this link Reset Windows 8 with the 'Reset your PC option and was thinking of recovering windows 8 that way since these laptops must have the recovery partition. I bought a hp desktop off Amazon with windows 7 pro installed, ran fine no issues whatsoever, since the word came out windows 7 is being put out to pasture next year, I went ahead an upgraded to windows 10 pro on the same desktop. Issue no.1 after the standard several minutes of computer inactivity, it went to "sleep", upon waking the computer I can hear it attempt to boot up , then 5 , 10 minutes later no logon screen, froze completely, upon having to shutdown the desktop whenever I want to logon, the upgrade was not an issue, preformed flawlessly. Issue no.2 after several weeks of trouble shooting I stumbled upon a fix when I removed my 2gb graphics card.. the logon screen came up like it was supposed to every time.

Question How do I get the best of both worlds with leaving my new graphics card in place and having the logon screen come up like its supposed to ?? without having to shut it down whenever I want to logon?

I have a customer that uses Windows 7 Pro laptops in their environment.  Both the wireless and wired networks are configured for 802.1X with both machine and user authentication separately (no EAP-chaining).
When the laptop is at the Windows login screen and there is a wireless profile configured on the device, I can see that the machine successfully connects to the wireless network and that our Cisco ISE deployment shows the laptop passing the machine credentials
which is the expected behavior.
The user then inputs their credentials.  from the Cisco ISE system, I also see these credentials successfully sent and authorized.  The laptop shows a different behavior however:
If the user's credentials are not cached in the lapUnable to connect to <SSID>" which is false because I can see this happened successfully in the wireless system

The Windows 7 login screen then states, "No login servers are available"
If the user's credentials are cached in the laptop

The Windows 7 login screen STILL states, "Unable to connect to <SSID>" however the login happens successfully regardless and the user is brought to a Windows desktop and connected to the wireless network.
If the user's machine is connected to a wired port (also enforced by 802.1X), the user is able to log into the system whether or not their credentials are cached in the system.
This seems to be an issue with a setting on the wireless adap... Read more

Hi. I see that a couple of people are having a similar issue with Facebook. My problem is with Dogphoria. I can't log-in for the past week from home--my laptop at Starbucks and my work computer have no problem logging in. I did everything Shaldares suggested for beckybrooke: clear history, cookies, cache, ssl states, unplug modem/restart computer and finally tried to get my ISP to help.

Here is where I am stuck: The "help" guy at my ISP told me to:
1. Go to the [Start] button located in the task bar.
2. Click on [Run], in the blank space type "cmd", hit enter.
3. A "DOS" screen appears.
4. Type "ipconfig /flushdns" and hit enter.

However, when I do this, I do not get a blank dos screen, only one that says
Micrsoft Windows XP...
c:\documents and settings...

and the guy at the ISP got a little rude and told me I am not following directions. Am I doing something wrong? Should I do something else?

Thanks in advance!

Hello @robwazzu,  Sorry to know !! Whenever the Hard Disk Short/Long DST test fails that indicates that the Hard Disk Drive has failed and that requires a replacement to resolve the issue HP will provide a replacement Hard Disk Drive if the Notebook warranty is Active, If not you need buy a SATA Hard Disk Drive from a retail shop nearby. Please Contact HP if your HP Notebook is under warranty, HP would replace the Hard Disk Drive and provide you a Recovery media to restore factory operating system after replacement (if you've not yet created Recovery Discs/USB Media) Note: Back up all the personal data to an external drive if it's possible. Greetings. I would like to know if anyone here has encountered a solution to one of the most known login issues regarding the beta version of Windows Live Messenger. The issue consists of an intervention by the Windows Live Communications platform addon every time you log on to msg. As soon as the window containing the message mentioning the issue appears , it gives you no choice but to close the program, only to encounter the issue again. I, along with the rest of the users experiencing this issue, have scrutinously searched a diverse number of forums for solutions regarding this issue, and have yet encountered an effective response to it. Any perspectives will be appreciated.

We have a login page in our website named Login.aspx, whenever a user enters username and password and clicks on submit button the user is again redirected to the login page itself.

The status in the page header changes to Logout but the user is redirected to the login page again. This is only happening in IE browser and specially IE8.

After the site is added to Trusted site zone list everything works perfect but if the site is not added to Trusted site zone list then this issue arises.

The website uses a trusted valid SSl certificate then there should be no point of adding site in to Trusted site zone list.

Any Idea guyz ????

My video card (Sapphire Radeon R9 270X) is not showing the screen to get into BIOS. I thought it was just a Windows 8 thing. However, my computer wasn't booting up so I initially thought maybe the card had gone out. I got a different monitor and plugged it into my onboard video and when I cut it on it shows my motherboard logo and the option to go into BIOS etc. Also, the pre-screen before the login screen for Windows isn't showing up. It wasn't booting up because it gave me an error message on the BIOS screen that my secondary HD was going bad, Press 1 to continue or press DEL to enter Setup. I wasn't seeing that when I was using my video card.

In short, is there a setting that will allow me to show up everything as soon as I cut my computer on?

A:Video Card won't show boot up screen until Windows 8 login

In the Bios check that the video card is set as the default graphics device rather than the onboard.

Hi Everyone,

I have been having a myriad of problems trying to fix my computer and it has now been a solid 16-18hours of reading/clicking/waiting. I am now at a point where my PC will run without my graphics card inserted, but when it is inserted, it will not run in normal mode, but will run in safe mode.

I will try to describe my problem as best I can from when the problem first started, and how I have gotten to the point I am at right now.

My current hardware setup that was working perfectly is as follows:

Windows 7 Home Premium
i5 4690k
Gigabyte Z97X-UD5H Motherboard
8GB Ram Kingston
Gigabyte GTX970 G1 Graphics
x2 120GB SATA RAID 0
X1 500GB HDD

It started with me trying to install some custom windows desktop themes. This required meddling with the system files, and although I made backups of the original files, one thing led to another and I found myself not being able to log back into windows.

I then tried to get into system restore to revert back. When trying to get into BIOS or boot from disc, my screen displayed nothing during POST and only displayed the windows login when it appeared. Thinking that this might be a result of the fast boot option I cleared the CMOS. I later realised that the BIOS and disc boot must have been working but it was always displaying on another monitor that was off. When I finally got to the system restore, there were no saved restore points. I later remembered that I was running RAID and the CMOS clear reset my SATA to AHCI. I reset t... Read more

A:Fresh windows install, Inserting gfx card cause freeze at login

Maybe your graphics card went bad. Can you get your hands on another to test with?

That GTX970 is a powerful graphics card - do you have a sufficient power supply (like 550W+)?

Can you go to Device Manager in Safe Mode with the card installed and see what it shows under Graphics? Is the card listed, does it have an exclamation mark or other signs that it is having a problem?

My computer is an Acer Aspire X1420 that comes with an onboard graphics that would always crash when running any prolonged graphic intense application. This desktop unit has a limited 220watt power supply, which is why an ASUS HD 6450 silent 1GB DDR3 graphics card upgrade was highly recommended due to the low power requirement of 26 watts at peak power. That said, my computer is freezing with this new card installation.

The fans on my video card work fine in UEFI & Ubuntu but when I load windows they turn off upon the windows login screen loading

They also seem to stutter a little like they're trying to turn back on but never do. This is only an issue when running windows and wasn't a problem the other day, but I think there were a bunch of updates that installed since then.

What could cause this and how do I fix it?

I'm facing blue screen recently on my Dell XPS 9550 laptop. I've opened ticket to Dell support and their offer was "reinstall Windows 10 OS again and tell us the result" which is unacceptable for me.
When I open the computer the screen is disappearing suddenly and comes back again with fluctuation. Especially It was occurring all the times when I lock my Windows-10 screen then try to login again.
I am attaching the screen captures.
1) Stop Code: VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE || igdkm64.sys
After all; I found the soultion as below.
Closed this application --> C:\Program Files\Portrait Displays\Dell PremierColor\PremierColor.exe  and removed from startup everything worked fine and had not any blue screen issue.
Dear Dell and community, at least, Dell me what does PremierColor.exe do? And why we're facing this issue while PremierColor is open?
