Internet Explorer 8 showing my site in compatibility mode

Q: Internet Explorer 8 showing my site in compatibility mode

Hi all,

My site shows in compatibility mode in Internet Explorer 8. I couldn't figure out why so I did a little test.. I created a new HTML file and put this into it:

HTML Code:
<?xml version= "1.0" encoding= "UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.1//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml11/DTD/xhtml11.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
<head>
<title>Internet Explorer 8 Test</title>
</head>
<body>
</body>
</html>
This is valid XHTML 1.1. How come Internet Explorer 8 still gives me a compatibility icon at the top?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

This is my 1st post, so hello to all Windows Users.

How do I turn on the compatibility mode in IE 9 Beta, so that it will work automatically for every website that has icon with it?

Thanks in advance.

A:Internet Explorer 9 Compatibility Mode

Hello Nenes, and welcome to Seven Forums.

If you want all sites to use compatibility view in Internet Explorer 9, you will need to press ALT to be able to click on the Tools Menu bar item instead to. Afterwards it's the same as in IE8 in the tutorial below.

Internet Explorer Compatilbility View - All Websites

If you only want specific sites to use compatibility view, then you will still need to manually click on the compatibility view icon to turn it blue when it appears in the IE9 address bar, or manually add the website to the compatibility view list.

Internet Explorer Compatibility View - Turn On or Off

Hope this helps,

We have a corporate Enterprise with IE11 on Windows 7. We are using Enterprise Mode instead of "open intranet sites in compatibility view" which is now unchecked.

We want sites to open in IE 8 Document Mode instead of the Edge Default which occurs when we uncheck the intranet site compatibility view.
We have the XML and Enterprise Mode Enabled and it is processing BUT the sites are changing from Edge to Document Mode 5 instead of 8?

I have tried ALL the document modes and even IE 8 Emulation and it doesn't matter which one we set, the sites are going to Document Mode 5, with the exception of Livemeeting.com which is opening in IE 8 Document Mode as it should.

Now we can set it manually in IE using the Emulation but it does not last the session.

Ok, this question has been asked around many corners of the Internet and these forums and I haven't found a "real" answer so I'm asking it again and hopefully seeking a final resolution to the problem.
Symptoms

When "Protected Mode" is turned On, users are unable to view some folders in the file upload dialog that they can normally view (e.g. under Documents, Pictures, etc.).When viewing the same folders in Explorer running as the same user as the Internet Explorer instance, the missing folders are viewable.Launching Internet Explorer "as an administrator" allows the user to view the missing folders (but this is not recommended due to security concerns).
Workarounds
So far, the workaround that I found was to either run some crazy tool from BleepingComputer called Unhide that resets everything on your system -- this is the sledge hammer-to-thumbtack approach.  Another one was to go into Organize > Folder and
search options > View and uncheck the hide options and select the show radio option.  The last one was to search for the folder in the file upload dialog, right-click the folder, and uncheck Hidden.
None of these, IMHO, are valid solutions to the real problem which is that something is special about this folder that is causing IE in Protected Mode to treat the file as Hidden.
Thoughts
The last "workaround" seems to indicate that the "hidden" file attribute is set for the file, but this doesn't app... Read more

We implemented a Eclipse-based desktop application which uses the SWT Browser Widget to display some Javascript. At least for Windows users, the SWT browser widget uses the Internet Explorer under the hood.
One of our clients is using the app in a windows environment (Windows 7, 64 bit) and whenever the client opens the app, the browser widgets uses the IE7 compatibilty mode and the page is broken, since our JavaScript code is not working in the IE7 compatiblity
mode. When the client navigates to the site with the standalone Internet Explorer, it uses the normal IE11 mode and everything works.
Changing the FEATURE_BROWSER_EMULATION value  in the registry  (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\MAIN\FeatureControl\FEATURE_BROWSER_EMULATION) is possible,  but has no effect on the clients machine. In our windows machine,
we can control the used IE version with this setting.

So, we assume there are some group policies which can be set to always open websites in IE7-compatibility mode when using the Internet Explorer within an application and not as standalone browser. But we have really no idea about the policies and where to
start investigating.
Any help and suggestion how to solve this issue, is very much appreciated.
Thanks a lot in advance! :)

I have a web application which is not Edge compatible & when launched in IE11 displays badly formatted and skewed text. I've found manually adding the site URL to Compatibility View Settings resolved the messy text issue and I know through use of
EMSL we can force sites to open in IE11 even when attempting to browse with Edge.
I need to have it set so that the site URL is automatically applied to all users in Compatibility View by default so that they don't have to manually add it themselves. My understanding is that Compatibility View is an emulation of legacy IE8 settings. I
know that the EMSL is recognising our site correctly because it forces opening in Edge - so we know its being picked up,  but I've tried setting the URL in an EMSL to IE7 & IE8 compatibility mode, but the text issue still persists.
Can someone please help with automatically applying Compatibility View for users for this site? Below is an example of what I've tried. The website is in the format "hostservername:portnumber"; I've tried just the host server name without the port
just in case and it makes no difference. Below is my .xml code for EMSL - I've tried both "IE8" & "IE8Enterprise" but it makes no difference:

I have tried most of the posts on the internet to fix this problem--this is under IE6--"Internet Explorer was not able to open this Internet site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later." The problem just suddenly appeared. I'm running a Dell Inspiron B130 laptop with Win XP Home, Service Pack 3 installed, 1 gb ram and a 40 gb HDD. Had McAffee Internet Security Suite preinstalled but removed it via REVO Uninstaller and have only Windows firewall enabled and NO anti-virus. I did try downloading with Windows firewall disbaled and still no success. I can navigate to a site like Google Chrome download page but then when I click on the download button, the error message appears. Also can't download Microsoft or Windows updates from either site, although, again, I can get through the "checking" phase. I've run Malwarebytes, A-Squared, and IObit 360 and removed about 13 traces of malware ranging from low risk to high risk, defragged and cleaned the reg, all to no avail. I originally had IE7 installed, read about rolling back to IE6 and doing the typical repair sequences, again to no avail. Supposedly IE8 fixes this, but I can't download it, although I did try the stand-alone installer of 15 MB without checking the "get updates" box. It loaded and installed and shows up as IE8 but still had the same problems. Then did a system restore back to before the IE8 install, rolled back to IE6 again... Read more

So we have a label printing program that the manufacturer built in a nice little "If WindowsVersion > 7 Then t('.'t)" message. We upgraded all officially supported by Dell machines to Windows 10, and we tested the program with Compatibility Mode set, everything worked fine. However, one of our users reported an issue we didn't test; if they open a label file (.lab) from Explorer, it completely ignores the compatibility settings that are on her machine. The settings were changed for all users, not just her, so it's not the problem. Does anybody have suggestions on where to look?

I'm going to be digging into the registry myself, just hoping somebody's seen this before or can help narrow my search. I'm going to start with the file association and see if maybe it's launching a different exe or something...but I don't think it is.

A:Compatibility Mode Ignored When Opening File in Explorer

Hi, not quite sure what you're saying..
- do you mean that if you double click a .lab file, the wrong program is launched (you later refer to file association)
or
- do you mean that if you double click a .lab file, the program behaves as if it hadn't been launched in Win 7 compatibility mode
or
- sthg else

Thanks!

Hi folks,

I'm having a few problems with Explorer 9 not displaying some webpages, such as the BBC iPlayer page (just a blank black page). Other pages display wrongly, such as Twitter and my own website. They work - but the text/graphics aren't quite where they should be. See attached pictures!

I am getting compatibility mode warnings a lot.

I thought it may be a virus/malware but, after spending time in that part of the forum with your excellent moderator Mole, we now know it's not.

Also, the webpages I refer to work fine in Chrome - but I prefer IE9.

Here are some examples of problem webpages:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/radio/bbc_radio_five_live/listenlive - radio works but the window is black.

http://www.santander.co.uk - images missing (see screenshot)

http://www.oasis.com/ - loads of the site won't download (see screenshot)

https://twitter.com/ - loads won't load (see screenshot). Also, it still works in Chrome but some of the avatars have gone missing as of today.

http://www.tastetheseasons.co.uk - images for Twitter, Facebook, etc missing from homepage. Plus text not starting in right place on news story pages.

Any help would be gratefully received.

Something I have just found out and was very valuable. A lot of you more expert than me may already know this but in case someone does not, here goes:

When using IE9 (win 7) and IE10 (Win 8) and something refuses to open, try clicking on the little blue torn page symbol at the top, it reverts IE so that it can view your target. I had been having a lot of problems trying to access some work programs where my wife works, it simply would not open. Hope this is helpful to someone, somewhere, sometime?

Today, there is a small box atop that says:

So I go to Tools/Compatibility View Settings

Inside the box that says "ADD THIS WEBSITE" automatically appears Google.com

When I zap it out, and press "CLOSE", nothing happens and it's still there on my next visit.

In the larger white box that says "WEBSITE YOU'VE ADDED" there's nothing there.

My gmail page seems partly jumbled up on the left column, so I guess this is the problem but I don't know how to fix it.

I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit on an Asus laptop. According to the techies at MSN there are some compatibilty issues between IE 11 and MSN. Specifically, many of the links on the MSN.com homepage are not accessible, e.g., wonderwall.com and the
calendar.live.com. I have been able to get the calendar when logged into Google chrome , and the links on the MSN.com homepage are accessible with IE and Google. The MSN techies said the only way to fix the problem was to uninstall IE 11 and then download
IE 10. I know there is no way to really "uninstall" IE 11 so is there a work around for this issue.  I've tried fixing with "compatibility view", but that hasn't worked.  I can't even add "wonderwall.com"
I would appreciate any advice/recommendations as to how to fix this problem

Thanks

KB 2447568 has been released accompanying the actual refreshes served by the software giant that can be downloaded from the Microsoft Download Center.

Hi, perkinshershel, and welcome to the forums.
Have you performed any sort of autotuning disabling on your machine, or else 'tweaked' the TCP/IP settings?

FWIW, Vista doesn't do well with tweaked TCP/IP settings like XP does - it has an autotuning feature that dynamically changes the values for various settings n the TCP/IP stack as needed, thereby making the need for tweaked TCP/IP settings a thing of the past.

A:internet explorer cannot open the internet site...

Did you try other sites ? That is a quick check to see if the problem is your browser. And it would need to be a site that uses similar setup. So if the page that doesn;'t display has lots of javascript, go to another one that has lots of javascript, etc.

On one of my sites, sometimes one particular page wouldn't display. I had to re-edit it, upload, it works fine now. So it may not be your browser. It could be that site.

A:internet explorer freezes on some site need help

Hi defkickjam

Did you build the system, or did someone build it for you? If someone built it for you, and you are experiencing freezes within two weeks, you may want to contact the builder.

If you built this yourself ---

1) Have a look in the EventViewer logs to see if any errors or warnings coincide with the system unresponsiveness. (EventViewer is in the Administrative Tools in Control Panel).
2) Thoroughly scan for malware -- if you have run the PC for any extended period without the firewall or antivirus enabled, malware could be causing the trouble.
3) Try using a different browser (Firefox is fairly good) & see if the problem exists using all browsers, or just one.
4) If you are currently logging into Vista as a "limited" user, try logging on as a user with administrative rights.
5) Have you changed any of the UAC settings recently? If so, try moving them back to their default settings. A security message might be trying to display, & Vista is hanging while waiting for a reply.

Best of luck

Looking for some advice: I am creating a website and need to test the site using IE 6. Does anyone know of a place that I can test my site using IE 6 browser. I currently have IE 7 installed, but when I view my site using IE6 the 3 column template does not fit on the home page.

I don't want to run IE6 on my computer or both versions of IE... Any advice would be greatly appreciated...

A:Internet Explorer 6 Test Site

Do you have a spare computer that you could install IE 6 on and open the website using that. Even better create a virtual machine on your computer then install Windows XP evaluation on it and open the site using your virtual machine.

Microsoft have a free tool to make and run virtual machines called Microsoft Virtual PC.

Hello,
I purchased a new desktop. Sony VAIO, too much crap in it but it had most of what I wanted. I had to add a wireless adapter to access home network and internet.
At first I could get to MSN via internet explorer then I could not.
I can get to most internet but many pages won't load including microsoft, windows update, sony, etc.

Any Ideas why this has occurred?
Ideas to correct. I turned off Windows firewall because I use Norton's.
I can also access hotmail.

Hello,

Well I will try to be descriptive as possible in the issues and how they came to be. Additionally, I have followed all steps in the "pre-post" with the exception of Updating Windows. The reason being, I cannot go to windows update through mozilla and if I open internet explorer ... my computer will be bombarded.

The Issue:

This took some time for him to come clean, but my son evidentally got a game online and didn't have a registration key. He says he tried to find one online and went to a page for serials, clicked on the link and then all this happened.

Unfortunately, being scared that he might've messed up his father's computer , he just walked away and allowed whatever was happening to run its course. The result is repetitive and at this point I am quite lost on what to do.

When I came home from work, I found my computer with all kinds of popups, error messages, etc going and additionally a task manager blocker so I couldnt get to ctrl alt del. I shut down, rebooted in safe mode and ran spy sweeper (my default engine) and then adaware.

There were alot of results, the list I do have if needed. Based on the "severity" indicator ... the top 10 programs were pretty severe. Quarantined and deleted (with system restore off). I should note here that I was told that there was a virus running in the memory (that warning is no longer occurring with the anti-virus/spyware/etc.

After I restarted I got two blocked access dialogs, but ... Read more

It's possible there's spyware on it that is affecting why I cannot log into hotmail, or even when I try to access the home page, I get the message Cannot connect to this site, or DNS error.

I have 20 images that were created to be same size, format, etc. and uploaded to my server directory.

In Chrome and FF, 20 of 20 display properly. In IE, 6 of 20 will not display and only display a red X. The response code is 206, Partial content.

The web server is Apache 1.3. Have tried with IE 8 in 3 different machines and none of them work.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 3
Internet Explorer 8
High Speed Internet (Videotron.ca)

After repairing my computer by deleting Malware or Trojan with BleepingComputer (www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic389668.html), during the following days I noticed that ONLY at our favorite site (www.cyberpresse.ca) certain parts move as if in a tremor. The main page which contains the titles of all the articles, is ok. But when I click on a detailed article that's when the tremors start. The detailed article contains several boxes for related articles and those boxes move up and down with certain lines of the article that are situated near the bottom of the boxes. This doesn't happen with other sites. I checked the same site with our neighbor computer. The fault is in my computer. Can u help me ? Thank you !

A:Pages jolt at one site in Internet Explorer

I found the answer to my problem. When I click on a detailed article, there is an icon, mostly on top of a box, "F recommended" (F recommender) that causes the tremor. It seems that it is a Facebook problem that they are trying to resolve. I switched off "Compatibility view" in TOOLS of Internet Explorer. Now it moves only once when the icon "F recommended" comes on. Another solution, is to switch from Internet Explorer 8 to Internet Explorer 9.
