Latest couple Firefox versions slow/freeze whole system

Q: Latest couple Firefox versions slow/freeze whole system

Using 64-bit Windows 8.1 Pro with an automatically updated Firefox, currently version 40.0.2.

Start up Firefox and...nothing. Check Process Explorer and see Firefox is there. Try to start up TCPview and...nothing. Decide to go back to Process Explorer and kill off Firefox - before I get that far - SHAZAAM! - TCPview starts, Firefox responds with browser window - all as it should be.

This has been the behavior for awhile now, admittedly intermittently but none-the-less a relatively new bad behavior.

And the REAL problem is hinted at by that TCPview issue up above - Firefox is freezing the whole system solid after a moment or two (Process Explorer can be run within that moment and displays dynamic results, windows can be switched to, but new processes (minimal testing) apparently cannot be started in a timely manner).

There are other complaints around the 'Net noting this type of behavior.

So...anyone know the reason for such powerful failure? (this should slow Firefox itself, not the entire system)

Preferred Solution: Latest couple Firefox versions slow/freeze whole system

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Quick followup - this may be an Avast problem, not a Firefox problem, based off of searching for symptoms on the 'Net.

i have 2 profiles, one on firefox version 24 for a few reasons, download window, old school search bar, faster
another profile is latest version of firefox for newer viewing compatibility, which I sometimes use chrome too if both firefox doesn't work.

issue is, on firefox 24, its faster compared to latest versions of firefox (even on clean profile) and to reproduce issue is rather simple. don't maximize window and drag firefox window around the screen and watch CPU usage spikes up.

for firefox 24 the usage doesnt go up at all but on latest versions of firefox (pretty much anything after ffox 26) if drag the window around for even 5sec CPU usage will spike like crazy, like its trying to render graphic or something with CPU. for both versions I have hardware acceleration disabled already so I don't think its that.

anyone know whats going on?

Hi guys.
I've been having this problem and it's driving me nuts. Literally.

The title of the thread is a bit ambiguous. Let me explain. In certain circonstences, I don't know what they are (maybe around Flash objects), I am browsing normally, closing & opening tabs and sometimes, Firefox freezes for a couple of seconds and when it returns, I can see a CMD window open & close immediately. The icon always open & close next to Fifefox (to the left) in the tasbar. Note that I only see an icon open & close in the taskbar only.

I've done scans of the following :
- Malwarebytes
- NOD32
- Spybot - Search & Destroy

Malreware byte detected some "Malware.Trace" (I believe it's just a scary name for tracing cookies) if I remember but those were promptly removed, NOD32 detected (probably a false positive) something in "crystaldiskinfo 4.0" installation file and Spybot found tracing cookies. But nothing remotely dangerous was found.

The problem still persists. The icon in the taskbar open and close so fast that I have no time to see what it is. Here si the addons I have running in my firefox.

You may find "Malware.Trace" is not quite as innocent as you think.
Suggest you do some searches via Malwarebytes Forum & Google.

Hi. Any help would be greatly appreciated. The problems show up under two scenarios:

1. First scenario (slow development of problems): Simply having Firefox open for too long, 45 min. to 1 hour -- URL's start opening slower and slower. Then they stop opening at all. Then Tor ceases to respond to directions (such as USE NEW IDENTITY). Then computer won't respond to shut down directions and must be hard booted.

2. Second scenario (fast development of problems): While editing a blog in SSL through Tor, saving changes quickly becomes impossible (though autosave works longer). Finally error message on save attempt: SSL_ERROR_BAD_MAC_READ. Then Tor doesn't respond, CPU doesn't respond and hard boot necessary for shutdown.

Problems showed up from one day to the next after opening unscanned graphics. Avira, Spybot, Ad-aware detect no problems. What to do, what to do? HijackThis log:

Version 4.18
Released on 28 May 2015.
A security hole with the Windows print spooler has been plugged. An application could use the print spooler to write an arbitrary file outside the sandbox. If Sandboxie detects that the print spooler is attempting to write a file outside the sandbox at the request of a sandboxed application, it will issue "SBIE1319 Blocked spooler print to file".
NOTE: Some printer drivers write temporary files to their own work area, even when not printing to file. In these cases, you will get SBIE1319 even when printing normally (not to file). The print may still print successfully. In this situation, you can safely ignore SBIE1319, hide the error message, or open the folder as described below.

There are 3 ways to allow the print spooler to print to file:

1) If you trust the process that is printing, you can double-click the SBIE1320 (that follows SBIE1319) to allow the print spooler to write files outside the sandbox for that particular process. 2) The spooler can write files outside the sandbox according to OpenFilePath settings. This enables you to permanently open the folders a particular printer driver uses to store its work files. 3) You can manually add the setting AllowSpoolerPrintToFile=y to sandboxie.ini. This is not recommended as it leaves your sandbox open to a print spooler exploit.
Any error msgs generated when auto-deleting a sandbox will now be shown to the user.

Recently, web browsing with Mozilla Firefox would cause seemingly random full system freezes. These freezes occur only on specific sites, but not consistently on every occasion of visiting said sites.

For instance wikipedia is one such troublesome site that gives me freezes. I visit one of the pages (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mantis) and halfway through the loading of the page contents, my system totally freezes up; the cursor does not respond, ctrl alt del doesnt work, and the hard disk LED does not flash. After a hard reboot, I reopen Firefox again, restoring my previous session, and reloading that specific page. This time round, everything works out fine and I'm able to browse that page without any problems. From that page however, I click on a link to another wikipedia article (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cricket), and again my system freezes up halfway through loading, and the only solution is a hard reboot again.

This does not seem to be an issue when I use Internet Explorer.
My Firefox version is 3.5.3 and I am running on Windows XP Home edition.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hello everyone.
It seems Qihoo 360 products has a lot of bugs lately and i explain what i mean:

- Real time protection seems to work good AFTER 2-3 system restart.
- I've test 360IS with sandboxie or browser in Comodo sandbox and it doesn't detect anything (only on demand scan)
- Web protection doesn't work on Mozilla or Mozilla based browsers.
- Removal speed is very slow and guess what..........during removal there is a possibility to get BSOD!!!
360 IS detected all samples but I got my first BSOD when i was trying to remove those samples found here:

- Everytime i wanted to add a program to whitelist or open the sandbox window to erase active programs Total Security was stop responding
- Memory usage was stuck on 200 - 240MB (with BD engine active only)

Hello all and thank you for your consideration in this matter.
The OS is Windows XP Home edition.
Upon start up the system freezes frequently forcing a hard restart.
When I attempt to search for Microsoft updates using google->microsoft updates I get a page stating that I need to enable automatic updates, which are and always have been enabled, when in the past it would take me to a screen that would check for any updates I needed.
I did a google search with this problem and read that others were having "hijack" issues, which I believe the two may be related, and I decided to download Hijackthis which I have used in the past and it worked on another computer. Running the scan it gave me a list much more extensive than I am capable of understanding what to remove and/or leave alone so I wanted to post the list to you all here in hopes that this might be a good start in recovering some normal functions on this computer.

As I am typing this, I am using my laptop, as I am unable to use my desktop (for obvious reasons):
My problem (it's the huytebesy4ko.net problem everyone here seems to have) started last night around 10 PM . Firefox froze so I used Task manager, and went to the processes tab to discover a tmp file (with a numbered name like 7474. tmp or something) taking up a lot of the memory usage. Sensing immediately that it was spyware/malware, I downloaded Killbox to delete the files (I went in the Temp folder to discover another four digit name tmp file). After deleting them, I tried Firefox again to see if the problem was solved. It wasn't.
Cut to today, I try to use system restore. It goes as far to load up and restart, but after it loads up to the desktop it tells me that system restore didn't complete. I've tried this at least three times today, the third time I tried it (in safe mode), it said the restore point was damaged or was deleted. After that, I find this site, and follow the steps preparation guide. I was able to make DDS and Attach file, but when I tried to make an Ark file using RootRepeal, it gave me a BSOD "IRQ LESS OR EQUAL" error. The second time, I tried to run it in safe mode, and it froze the computer. As it loads back to the desktop, it gives me a "rundll32 has stopped working" error.

My System
OS: Windows XP Professional w/ SP2

Hardware: ECS motherboard (yes I can confirm ECS sucks), Intel Core 2 Duo CPU, 2GB RAM
5 IDE Hard Drives: 120GB connected to PATA controller on motherboard. 200GB, 160GB, 300GB, 300GB connected to PCI IDE controller card.

Description of Problem
My system has been freezing up about 4-8 times a week on average for the past few months, I reboot and just continue my business as usual.

After such a freeze today, I rebooted the system. When it came back up, my torrent program which starts automatically with Windows reported some errors with not being able to find certain directories. I used Windows Explorer to check just one of my hard drives, the 200GB, and yes, some directories were empty when there should have been files there. So I rebooted Windows again and this time, Windows gave me the blue screen where it automatically performed chkdsk. Hundreds of files scrolled by with a message saying something like "orphaned file", so all those directories which I thought were lost were being recovered so I was relieved.

When I got back into Windows, the directories I checked were correct on the 200GB hard drive which I checked before, HOWEVER now I noticed that for my two 300GB drives which I did not examine before, Windows Explorer didn't list their custom volume name next to their drive letters like it did for my other 3 drives, for those two drives it said Local Disk (F:) and Local Disk (H:). A:After Windows XP freeze, a couple of my hard drives are not readable. HELP!

Try this:Boot to your WinXP Setup CD
At the 1st window with the Repair option on the bottom Statusbar, do that to open the Repair Console
When you get to the Repair Console's Command Prompt enter CHKDSK C: /R (the R is not a typo)
Let CHKDSK do its thing, then reboot
Repeat this procedure, CHKDSK drv: /R, for every hard drive in your system, including reboot after each HD.

Also, running CHKDSK from the desktop (via Start menu, Accessories, Command Prompt) by entering CHKDSK C: /F (the F is not a typo), occasionally. This should be part of your general system maintenance routine. Note that this will require a reboot to actually run for C:.

Hope this helps.

I have an odd issue with Windows Vista ultimate x64!
I have had this before I reinstalled vista but not this frequent as it is now.

The symptom is that everything freezes for a couple of seconds,The hard disk led turns dark while this happens. The mouse cursor still works but everything else is froze.
I can hear a click sound from the hard drive before everything goes back to normal!

Often when i try to access diffrent discs in windows explorer it take ages to access them!Completly random,Sometimes i can access them without any delay but sometimes one or two will take 10sec or more to show the content. Then windows explorer freezes but all other stuff works,i can start applications.

I have 4 hard drives installed on my machine, and I have tried 3 of these as C: but this issue has always turned up in Vista

I have tried Windows 7 and I have not had this issue in windows 7.However, it felt slow, so I went back to Vista again!

I have not installed any raid drivers,I run all hard drive as individual discs.

Hallo. Two months back we have purchased a Lenovo 110 with Windows 10 and configured it. The initial setup and configuration took a long time (3 to 4 hours) and when it was done, we have been experiencing a lot of issues. Basic programs keep getting frozen and take a long time to start. Programs like MS Excel or MS Edge (for browsing) freeze the whole system and we need to press the power button to restart the laptop. System bootup can be really fast or at times get hung up for hours it the message "Windows being configured..."  We have taken it to Saturn, where we bought the laptop, but their customer care says everything is fine and have sent us the laptop back after just having reverted the system to factory settings.  We are highly dissatisfied and inconvenienced with this product, especially after having given away a lot of money for it, when basic lower end laptops work much smoother. Expecting a solution for this problem. Thank you.

I've had this computer for about 2 years now. It has an integrated GeForce 2 GPU. I recently formatted and reinstalled Windows XP. Since then, anytime I try to play any 3D game, the game will work perfectly for a few minutes and then just freeze to either a flashing black screen, complete black, or mostly black with random lines of color. Flash/2D games seem to work fine, leading me to believe it's the card. Whatever audio was playing at the time of the freeze repeats like a broken record. I've tried at least 5 different 3D games I have, which all worked fine before I reinstalled Windows and everyone of them freezes like this a few minutes into the game. I've tried figuring out a trigger for this, but it seems random and not based on time or any particular action on my part.

I really don't know what to do... I'm pretty sure I have all the right drivers. I found the drivers download from the nVidia site, in the Win XP drivers section (if that's not correct, please direct me to a true source). When this "freeze" happens, there's nothing I can do except turn off the power. Alt+Tab, Ctrl+Alt+Del, the windows key, nothing does anything. Does anyone know what might be causing this problem? I will seriously love anyone that can help me resolve this.

My rig is quite old now but was completely stable under Windows 8.1 and until a couple of weeks ago, I'd got it stable under 10 too. In general, since upgrading to Win 10 Pro 64 bit, I've experienced a succession of stability problems, too many of which seem to relate to nVidia drivers. Sudden freeze up problems started happening again just recently to which there was no recourse except to hard restart.

My system has two nVidia GTX280 cards and a multi monitor setup. Issues with and the updating of nVidia drivers has been the cause of delight and despair in equal measure. It wasn't until version 341.85 (for my particular cards) came out that I finally got my system stable. Anyhow, recently there was an update release (version 341.95) that installed itself courtesy of the not very controllable Windows 10 updating regime. It came in with a load of other updates. Suddenly, my system was freezing up again, as in everything would suddenly stop (including the clock) but interestingly, any audio playing at the time continued. No black screen, BSOD, warnings or errors.

As I'd experienced so many issues with the nVidia drivers in the past, my instinctive reaction was to look there first. Sure enough, a thorough safe mode uninstall then re-installation of the previous version drivers and the problem was fixed ........ until the nVidia driver updated itself again via Windows update. Grrrr!

Once again, Tenforums to the rescue. I found the thread Windows Updates... Read more

When the power came back on, I could no longer access the Internet. After talking with 2 tech?s at Earthlink, and a senior tech at Dell, Dell had a PC tech come out and replace my modem. At that time, the tech told me that both the phone jacks in my back-ups/surge protector were also fried, and APC has since replaced it.

Since I?ve gotten back online, something weird is happening. I can get an internet connection easily, but when I click on either Firefox or IE, my pc just sits there with the light flashing on the tower but nothing happens for up to 10 minutes and then finally the Firefox or IE screen will open up. This just happens when I first go online in the morning. As long as I leave Firefox minimized, I can get back to my browser quickly after that. Is it possible something else was damaged by the power surge? Can anybody help me with this? I would really appreciate it. Sorry to be so wordy but wanted to give as much info as possible.

Let me add that I?m not a newbie but not a tech ? somewhere in the middle. I know just enough to be dangerous to myself and my computer

A lot of times when I'm viewing a webpage in Firefox 3.0.17 (haven't seen this problem happen yet in IE) it doesn't load the entire page completely. It's like it will only download the "bare essentials" like text and a few graphics. If there are any embedded YouTube links or Adobe Flash stuff those will instead just be empty space. This problem seems to occur when I view a page that has a lot of stuff going on, like www.espn.com. Refreshing the page doesn't fix it.

I print-screened a .bmp file to show you all, but I can't find a good image-hosting site.

Why is it doing this and how do I fix it?

A:Firefox sometimes downloads "lo fi" versions of pages

You may try to uninstall Firefox and go for the newest version, 3.5.6

I have both Minefield 64-bit and regular Firefox installed but whenever I run Minefield, Firefox always appears. I suspect its something to do with profiles but not sure.

A:Running multiple versions of Firefox

Swarfega - best bet is to have separate profiles for each version - then create shortcuts for each version on the desktop forcing each particular version to load each particular profile - but this can be disastrous if one version is set as the default web browser, as clicking on a link in one version may open the other version, and since it would not be forcing a profile, it might actually cause you grief as the other version may try to open the profile that you are already in....

Another way would be to run ProfileManager and remove the automatic profile selection switch so that you will be asked every time you load either version which profile you want to use - but this can be disastrous as you may click the wrong profile.

Hi -

I've run into a virus, certainly due to my downloading a "free" program to convert video files. I've removed that program but am now having problems with Firefox being redirected to various ads (and away from bleepingcomputer.com!) and my system is running extremely slowly. I'm also getting intermittent error messages about "scripts". Please help!

Thanks -

My problem is that Firefox runs extremely slow. Especially after I have been browsing for a while (an hour or so) and have had several windows open. When I open Windows Task Manager, I see that Firefox is sometimes using 50% of my system resources. When I close Firefox, it doesn't close and I have to close it from Task Manager.

I've got 2gb RAM on a 3GHz Pentium 4 XP machine, Firefox

I had this problem with the previous version of Firefox as well (not sure what number version that was) so I've been using IE exclusively. I'd rather use FF, so I'd appreciate if ya'll could help me figure this problem out and fix it.

...and this is how it started. On a different PC I have it makes it reboot now after a few minutes. It probably accumulated more viruses.
On my laptop now, beside the redirection, I cannot do Windows update (I cannot connect to the MS Win update web site - always timed out).
I cannot install/run any antivirus program: I tried "Malwarebytes Anti Malware", "Hijack This". I was working with only the MS Windows Defender (wich seems to works but doesn't find anything). I have installed Zone Alarm and the Antivirus cannot be activated. I'm afraid that this would worsen.
Anybody has a solution?
A year ago I had a similar problem but I managed to fix it with MalwareBytes and with Kidokiller.

- the original installed OS on the system? yes
- an OEM or full retail version? OEM
- What is the age of system (hardware)? 3 year
- What is the age of OS installation (have you re-installed the OS?) I have reinstalled about 6 months ago.

Woox, the questions those you answered is not any necessary in this case. Please answer the following questions with the appropriate data where necessary.
Was it the same before you update the display driver to 327.23 WHQL? How did the computer run with the display driver 314.22 WHQL?(dont try to later drivers without asking, lest there be any mistake).

Are you overclocking? As you are getting BSODs, you should stop overclocking and run all the hardware components like CPU, GPU and RAM to their default settings. Also set the BIOS to default, too.

First time poster here. Thanks in advance for the help.
I have Dell Laptop, i5, 4gb ram M450 @2.40 GHZ. Running Windows 7 Professional, 64bit with SP1.
Laptop is about 3 years old and has run well generally speaking.

I am experiencing a couple of issues with it now.
The most annoying is the spooky laugh after I start up Firefox.
I also run Chrome but it is no faster than Firefox. It also starts to do some operation frequentlya nd the mouse will not respond until it is finished. I suspect I have a lot of clutter and some Maleware on the computer and would like to clean it up short of a reformat and reinstall of the OS.

Acer Aspire 5742-7120. Windows 7, Service Pack 1. Firefox started in "not responding" mode. Very difficult to close... takes several attempts to stop the process in File Manager. Even File Manager goes unresponsive for extended periods. Then system takes up to an hour to respond to a reboot or shut down command. Uninstalled/reinstalled Firefox. Functioning, but slowly -- this time. Explorer and Chrome also a bit slow.
Above Firefox failure and system reboot glitches, including very slow loading from Welcome screen to an unresponsive Desktop, have occurred multiple times. Have had system up in apparently fully-functioning mode, entering and exiting sleep mode, and rebooting successfully, and then, unexpectedly back in the glue. Limping along fairly well just now...
MalwareBytes full system scan (with up-to-date database) completed with no problems detected.
Is this the right forum, or should I be in Malware/Viruses, etc.?
Thanks for any suggestions!

OK. Here's a tidbit I just discovered and learned about Firefox (in general) and the FF Java Console addon (in particular) I thought i'd share

When you look at your Firefox addon extensions (Tools->Addons) under Windows 7 or Vista you may find (see image below)

When you update your Java, old versions of the FF Java Console addons weren?t uninstalled from FF (note I have 2 old versions of Java Console in example below)
The Uninstall button for the FF addon is dimmed! (so you can?t uninstall it!)

Turns out the solution is simple

Close all your FF windows
Now start FF again using rt click to Run as administrator
> Rt click Start->All Programs->Mozzilla Firefox, select Run as administrator
The Uninstall button for the addon should now work!

However, after using Spybot, the pop ups are usually blank with a message that says "cannot find server" which is better than the ads.
