SP1 Update repeatedly failing, error 0x80073712

Q: SP1 Update repeatedly failing, error 0x80073712

Good afternoon! From what I've seen in a Whole Lot of Googling, this forum seems to have the most targeted, successful support for the kind of issue I'm seeing.

I've been running Win7 Home Premium for a few years, and every single Windows Update has run successfully (with a snag now and then) except SP1, which returns error 0x80073712 every time.

I've disabled SpyBot S&D and AVG Free, but MS Security Essentials is still running.

I ran SURT (Windows6.1-KB947821-v34-x64), which completed.
(And I discovered I've been attempting to resolve the issue with SURT since September 2012, v22!)

Ran SFC scan as Admin:

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.
Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

Collected CBS.zip from C:\Windows\Logs

Attempted update again.

New error code: 80070002. Followed WinHelp to stop Windows Update service, deleted temporary update files, restarted update service, checked again for updates.

Attempted update again. Found 1 critical (SP1) and 2 optional. Didn't note what they were.

Cancelled install during Win Live Essentials 2011 update. Restarted SP1-only update.

80073712 returned.

Re-collected CBS.zip from C:\Windows\Logs

(I tried to attach CBS.zip, but at ~30MB, it's well over the 8MB limit. Any particular logs you could use instead?

Thanks!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Ran Windows6.1-KB947821-v34-x64 again, attempted SP1 update again, failed with 80073712 again.

Ran WindowsUpdateDiagnostic again, which reported "Windows Update error 0x80073712(2015-07-21-T-12_43_39A) Not Fixed"

Hello out there. I am in dire need of expert help.

I have two desktops running Windows 8.1 Pro x64. In one of them, Windows Update KB2973201 is failing to install. (I have installed at least two other updates after this, so the problem is not related to Windows Update not working.)

The KB2973201 update can be initially installed, either when I use Control Panel/Windows Update/Select Update or when I install it manually, using the file downloaded from Microsoft -- I have verified this using Control Panel/Windows Update/View Update History: KB2973201 appears as installed "pending restart".

After rebooting the system, however, Control Panel/Windows Update/View Update History shows "status failed" for KB2973201. Details for the failure are like this (I have tried to install KB2973201 many, many times):Security Update for Windows (KB2973201)
Installation date: ‎28/‎07/‎2014 14:32
Installation status: Failed
Error details: Code 80070003
Update type: Important
Fix for KB2973201
Running the Windows Update Troubleshooter (I have done this many, many times) gives the following messages:Service registration is missing or corrupt -- fixed
Windows Update error 0x80070057 (2014-07-28-7-03_12_27P) -- fixed
Problems installing recent updates -- fixed
Detailed information about the errors includes messages such as these:

A:Update KB2973201 failing to install repeatedly

If you run the DISM command and it fixes a Windows component you should rerun the sfc command again and reboot the computer. If the update still does not install the update, you could hide it if you are sure you don't need it You could also try a Repair Install and as a last resort, reinstall Windows.

Hello

Frustrated with trying to fix this myself and thought I would turn to the forum for some help. I have been unable to install KB 2929437, KB 2871997, or KB 2830477 either as a group or individually. The error codes are all different and are below:

KB 2929437: error 8007054F
KB 2871997: error 80070490
KB 2830477: error 80070BC9

Since this started, Windows Update was able to install several other updates but not these three for some reason. I have run the System Update Readiness Tool and the SFC scan without change in the errors. The SFC scan continues to show corrupt files but is unable to fix them.

Problem #2 - I also appear to be unable to upload the zipped CBS log and continue to get internal server errors from the website when I try to attach the file. I would be happy to do so if anyone knows a way around this.

Thanks in advance!

sam

Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested data
If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CBA files, for a number of reasons)

Hi!
First of all, please forgive my real clumsy English - I hope it's at least understandable.

I have difficulties with the last MS patch (July 9), the KB 2844286 (something with .NET Framework 3.5.1) doesn't install. I tried first to delete the accompanying Files KB 2832414, 283946 and 2840631 and then a re-updating, but again for the KB 2844286 fails with the

error 0x80073712 (error_sys_component_store_corrupt)

The checksur.log shows several errors (cbs.zip)

sfc /scannow shows one error with wimgapi.dll (hashmismatch) which cannot repaired, because source file is also corrupted (sfcdetails.txt).

lossless repairing with the Win repair system isn't possible, because user-, program- and windows-folders are not in the same partition.

In other threads, I saw very profund and competent answers, so I hope someone can help me too!

Appreciating your help very much!

I am having the exact same problems as the people who opened these threads:

I have windows 7 Home 64bit

Things that have failed:
- Check For Updates always fails with the error code: 80073712
- sfc /scannow produces "windows resource protection could not perform the requested operation"
- turn windows features on or off produces an empty window.
- system update readiness tool produces 1 error "csi unable to query store version"
- Installation of SP1 fails with: ERROR_SXS_COMPONENT_STORE_CORRUPT(0x80073712)

I also did a remote session with a real microsoft tech and after trying a few things, they just tried to get me to buy their $149 "advanced tools" garbage.

Looks like bad news, I'm afraid...

Code:
Checking Packages

64-bit Windows usually has a COMPONENTS hive of 38-60MB - and yours is only 28MB
Opening the file in a Hex editor, it's obvious that something has totally corrupted it - it appears to be an extract from a CBS.log file!

Unless you have a System Restore point that's from before the problem started, then I'm afraid that your only options are either a repair install or a clean install.

Downloaded and ran SURT (Windows6.1-KB947821-v34-x86.msu), it just completed, retried to install SP1 and got the same error.
Ran sfc /scannow and got this
Code:

I ran the System File Checker tool as administrator in cmd prompt sfc /scannow when it finished it said Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.
I tried again to install the update but it failed.

The next step was to download and install the System Update Readiness tool, installed that, said finished after about 5 mins (read that it appears to hang but just let it go) and yeah it seemed to install but after that the update still won't install fails with same error code.

That's where the microsoft page stops in terms of what to check or do, so now I come to the group hoping to find some answers.

Hi all,

I've been having a weird issue with Windows Update. Ever since around 8/15/12, all updates are failing twice--on shut down, and on reboot, causing a second reboot. I always get the option to do my windows update when I shut down, and I now have to run the cmd line 'shutdown -s' command or hit the physical button on my tower in order to bypass this attempted install. The error code is 80070020.

My WindowsUpdate.log is here:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/agv304os9k...dowsUpdate.log

The only other "oddity" is that my Program Files environment variable, at one point, was pointed towards my E: drive, when I had a 60GB SSD. It is now pointed toward my c:\ drive again. This caused some initial issues with Windows Media Player and such, but I've had no issues for over a month since.

Thanks!

A:Windows update error 80070020 repeatedly

Try restarting your computer, while disabling most of your startup items then checking for updates again.
You can do so by Start>msconfig>Startup tab
In there uncheck anything that may have been installed before 8/15/12, and or that seems suspicious or you just dont want to run at startup.
Also try running the attached tool.

I've also included the ever useful event log entries as well. Can anyone help?

You have almost 200 missing files according to the CheckSUR report - but none, according to the SFC report.
This indicates some major mismatch between the registry and the file system.

A repair install is your best and quickest repair option.

Hi all,

since some time ago I?ve been unable to proceed with any installation from Windows Update as I get always error not in the installation but when after reboot the changes are applied (Windows reverts changes) The errors that I get are the following errors: 8007054F, 643, 8024200D.

I?ve tried with Microsoft Fix tool and some other alternative from Microsoft Support site, like reset and re-activate Windows Update resources, but not success at all and always the same negative result.

Attached you can find the CBS.log file after running Microsoft Readiness Tool, sorry for the file size (~170MB) the error that is repeated more often is the 0x80070005, E_ACCESSDENIED.

Also I have another issue that prevents tools like Microsoft Lync to connect to the internet, windows network connection indicates that there is no internet (red cross when I click over the network icon in the toolbar) however I can navigate the Internet and connect to other computers in the local network. I don?t know if this is related, but can give you more details of what is happening.

I would like to ask you for support and help to fix this issue, I am a bit lost...

Thanks

If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)

I have a HP Pavillion g6 notebook running windows 7 home premium. It is continually failing to install Windows 7 Service Pack 1 for x64-based Systems (KB976932), giving the error code 80070490. It will successfully download and begin installing the update, then when it restarts, it begins configuring windows and get's to about 8% before failing, at which point it reboots.

I have installed and run System Update Readiness Tool, run SFC /SCANNOW which shows no errors and tried renaming and deleting the contents of Software Distribution folder, all with no success. Any ideas?

OK, I'm pretty *** right now!

I bought my laptop brand new in September with Vista preinstalled. I tried to update the system but I couldn't because apparently Microsoft *** up Vista so bad that they didn't even bother testing it properly before the release date to see if it works at all. As we all know, Microsoft is in a monopol market position so it can treat its customers in whatever *** way it wants to.

Ok, enough of the vent.

I spent 1 week tring to figure out how I can update Vista because I kept getting error 0x80073712 all the time. It turned out that the problem was that when Microsoft released Vista, some of the system files were corrupt, and that prevented me from updating. What's more, I was also informed that I could only resolve this issue by reinstalling Vista from CD which I did not have, because I got it preinstalled on my laptop! So, there is no way I can ever get any updates?!?? Naturally, the information that I found on the Microsoft support page was a piece of **.

(The "Windows Features" dialog box is empty in Windows Vista, or you receive an error message that includes the following code when you try to use Windows Update: "0x80073712")

Nevertheless, I still did a system scan, and it didn't produce any results, just as I expected.
After one week of struggling to find a way out of the ** microsoft kindly dumped on me, I found a tweak on another forum, which finally worked!! I had gone through like 10 different solutions bef... Read more

I'm new to posting on these boards but I'm going to do my best to follow all the guidelines. I ask your forgiveness in advance, just in case. I wasn't able to use the system specs tool because it says .NET won't install. I found that interesting since I believe .NET to be the root of my problems. I've been trying to run Windows Update for far longer that I like to recount. This computer had been on a shelf and my bosses want to bring it out for a new employee. It seems to work fine, except for it absolutely will not update and sometimes when I run Windows Update I get BSOD with Invalid Kernel and stop error 0x0093. I have tried everything I've found in the Seven Forums that applies to my version of Windows and errors. I have tried countless FixIts, but nothing has worked. I finally gave in and registered with y'all and I hope someone can help.

Thanks for your time.

Hello everyone;
The problem I am experiencing, I can explain pretty well. I have a copy of Windows 7 Home Premium installed on this here computer. Now, It's an OEM. Here's the catch. This computer, right here, right now- is new. My OEM copy has been used twice, so according to the activation servers, I shouldn't be allowed to do that because OEMs are supposed to be machine specific. Now, to do some explaining.

My old computer completely and utterly died last year, so I was unable to uninstall Windows 7 from the system, So I think it still believes it's registered to that computer, which is no longer the case. It is, in fact, registered to this new one. But since the key has been used before, BAM. We've got a problem haven't we? So, what I'm trying to say here is- will phoning the phone activation line actually help me at all or should I just bang my head against a wall and fork out another ?70-80 for a new serial? (I can't really afford to do so because christmas is around the corner and I've literally just moved house.)

Thanks for listening!

Hello All,

I work at a company with over 350 workstations and we are currently having some issues with Windows Updates on many of our computers. They all show that there are 3-4 updates important updates to install, but all of them end in a failure. I have tried many different things to fix the situation. Renaming the SoftwareDistribution folder and trying the updates again has no affect.

Hello!

Yes, I have seen it before. It is not exactly uncommon. In all previous cases that I have dealt with, it has always been in error. Looking over the CBS.log file showed that SFC did in fact scan very few, or no, files. Often the CBS.log actually showed an error which SFC did not graphically report. In my experience, there are certain errors which SFC cannot recover from. In these cases, it stops part way with a 'Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation' error message. When it finishes too fast, despite claiming success, it often has had one of these fatal errors anyway, if I remember correctly.

Now, I could take the CBS.log, and see what seems to be going on, but if you ask me, it isn't worth it unless you have a problem. If your computer has a problem, which is why you ran SFC, then I shall take a look, but if all seems well, then you risk more by fiddling.

A:Error code 0x80073712

Hello Paul!

Thanks for letting me know about that error

Error code 0x80073712 maps to ERROR_SXS_COMPONENT_STORE_CORRUPT. This error is one of the few which can cause SFC to fail. These two are definitely linked.

As you have seen, SFC is not robust enough to deal with corruptions when its store copy is also corrupt. It can deal with problems when it has a clean store, but a corruption elsewhere, but when its store is damaged, it fails.

Therefore, we need a second tool downloaded from the internet with its own store built into the download to identify problems in the store. I also intend to take a copy of the CBS.log, just to diagnose what exactly is corrupted, how badly is is corrupted, how to fix it if it is possible to fix, or whether it does not actually need to be fixed (I doubt this scenario). At the moment, I am just diagnosing what is wrong, and what needs to be done.

Please download this independant tool (the System Update Readiness Tool) from here: Description of the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista, for Windows Server 2008, for Windows 7, and for Windows Server 2008 R2 and install it.

Once it has installed, please copy the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder (the whole folder, please) to your Desktop, right click on it > Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder, create a new thread in this forum: http://www.sevenforums.com/windows-updates-activation/ (It is better to keep something like this in its own thread, and leave this thread for simple on... Sorry you seem to have been missed. Have you checked the Prerequisites before installing IE9 - Prerequisites for installing Internet Explorer 9 and also here - Troubleshoot problems when you cannot install Internet Explorer 9.
Also run the system file checker just incase there are any system errors - SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker.

Hi and thank you in advance for your help.

I work for a school and am having an issue with IE 11 on many machines I just imaged. IE will not go to internal intranet links and is many times not loading or slowly loading pages. I read in another forum to uninstall the IE 11 update. I did this on one computer, rebooted, then tried to manually install IE 11. However, that didn't work. So, I let it do updates. It pulled down IE 9, IE 10, and IE 11 in windows updater. I performed the updates 3 times, each time with one failing until I am at the final update which is IE 11 and it fails. I performed a registry fix using CCleaner, but no dice. I have seen on some other threads here that after running the CheckSUR tool, there has been a fix given. I was wondering if this is something I need to do for every machine (about 18) or if there is a way I can fix it myself. Thanks for any help!

Hi All,

I have a CBS log from running SFC /SCANNOW. https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resi...DYyd7tNJ8wHEqY

Hi,

I've been trying to solve this for a few months now but I haven't gotten anywhere. I've followed all the instructions here and they still continue to fail.

Windows Update Posting Instructions
I would really appreciate any insight as to what you think may be causing the issue, reformatting would really set me back since this computer has some industry specific CAD programs that are a pain to setup.

thanks again,Mark

For some reason I cant post an attachment "attach button doesn't respond, in fact none of them do", I'll add a reply to the thread to see if I can then.

Update: Sorry about the missing attachments, I moved them out of the folder and forgot to attach, there are a couple of older CBS Persist files if you need them.

thanks

Mark

The error code 9C59 appeared when I tried to add Internet Explorer 11 to the update, prior to that it wasn't there.

Hello.

I've never posted before; I hope you can help me. But I'm not an advanced user therefore I might need some patient assistance, if possible.

Windows update is not succeeding. Getting error code 80073712 when trying to install the following updates:
KB3060716
KB3071756
KB3083992

However my Microsoft Security Essentials updates still install successfully from the Windows Update panel.

sfc /scannow for many months has been giving the following error: "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them."

Some background information:
1. Sony Vaio laptop (2009)
2. Original operating system was Vista, but after purchase I upgraded to Win 7 Home Professional by using Sony's upgrade disk (2010)
3. Now running Win 7 Home Professional SP 1
4. Three years ago I replaced original HDD with a Crucial M4 SSD (128GB)
5. System Restore has not worked since SSD was installed, so I don't depend on it. Therefore every month or so I clone SSD in case of a major failure.
6. I rely on the computer for my photography and for more than 10 years' worth of Quicken data and for syncing iPhone and iPad with iTunes software
7. I have already hidden some of the Windows Updates that are notorious for causing false SFC errors (e.g., KB3035583 and KB3068708.

Attachment: Windows error code screenshot. But CBS zip file is too large (44MB for folder or 10MB for single text file).

Hi.
I have a problem with Windows Update. It continues to fail with error code 800736B3. I have tried the update troubleshooter for Windows, I have ran scannow, I also have installed the update readiness tool and hotfix.
Still the updates fail.
I would greatly appreciate any help with this.

Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested data

If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)
