Solved: Memory upgrade, Timing difference issue?

Q: Solved: Memory upgrade, Timing difference issue?

Im new here and consider myself reasonably knowledgeable about pc hardware. Hope things wont get too complicated.

Yesterday I've upgraded my memory from 8 to 16 gb. I know that timings are important when adding memory to an existing module, the same goes for voltage. But when I checked my specs after installing it, I noticed different JDEC clock speeds available to the new module. However the 800mhz speeds show the exact same timings

The question is: Will this cause problems?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Solved: Memory upgrade, Timing difference issue?

Regardless of what is available, the system will only use speeds in common to all installed sticks.

I'm considering replacing my current memory (Corsair) with 8gb of Corsair XMS series memory. I ran SIW and it shows that my current memory timing is 7-7-7-20 1.50v. The Corsair is listed at 9-9-9-24 1.65v. Will this timing be compatible with my Biostar TA890GXB HD motherboard? I do not overclock. Is there anything that I need to be aware of, alter or change? Would I possibly be able to add the 8gb to my current 4gb?
Thank you.

Can someone tell me the difference b/w PC2100r and PC2100u?

A:Solved: Memory difference?

The "u" stands for unbuffered. The other version will be buffered or registered.

Buffering helps with systems that have large amounts of memory like on a server. Both should work well on most home systems though I have heard that some AMD CPU's require Buffered ram. not sure on that though.

can anybody help me with my memory timings? i want to maximize the performance of my memory, my problem is, i cant change the voltages in the bios, only the timings, and im not sure what to put in the memory timings. ive posted pics of my system. pls help. tnx

A:Memory timing

Hi aceedee,
what would yield you more performance than changing your memory timings is matched pairs of ram as your board supports dual channel, and you are running it in single channel mode. i see you have 1 stick of pc5300, and the rest are pc6400. you can lower your memory timings if you want, but you will not notice a difference in performance. matched pairs running in dual channel will get you a 10-15% overall performance increase.

I'm not realy sure what this is, but if i have 2 different memory speeds, can i use memory timing to make them both compatible with each other because i have a 256mb stick and a 1GB stick. the 256 is running at 133MHZ and the 1GB is running at 166MHz. If i change this is the BIOS can i make them both at 166 and improve performance?

Thank you for taking the time to read this post.

Could anyone tell me what ( CL-RCD-RP-RAS ) associated with Memory Timing stand for ? Also the numbers associated to each.
Thank you.

A:Memory Timing

RAS - Row Address Strobe or Row Address Select
CAS - Column Address Strobe or Column Address Select

tRAS - Active to precharge delay; this is the delay between the precharge and activation of a row

tRCD - RAS to CAS Delay; the time required between RAS and CAS access

tCL - (or CL) CAS Latency

tRP - RAS Precharge; the time required to switch from one row to the next row, for example, switch internal memory banks

tCLK ? ClocK; the length of a clock cycle

Command Rate - the delay between Chip Select (CS), or when an IC is selected and the time commands can be issued to the IC

Memory architecture is like a spreadsheet with row upon row and column upon column, with each row being one bank. For the CPU to access memory, it first must determine which row or bank in the memory is to be accessed and then activate that row with the RAS signal. Once activated, the row can be accessed over and over, until the data is exhausted. This is why tRAS has little effect on overall system performance but could impact system stability if set incorrectly.

tRCD is the delay from the time a row is activated to when the cell (or column) is activated via the CAS signal and data can be written to or read from a memory cell. When memory is accessed sequentially, the row is already active and tRCD will not have much impact. However, if memory is not accessed in a linear fashion, the current active row must be deactivated and then a new row selected/activated.... Read more

Hi All,
Just a question - I have 4 1gb sticks of Corsair 6400/800mhz ram (ddr2) It states on the ram that they are SLI ready along with the timing and voltage (4-4-4-12 2.1v)

Bios defaults to 5-5-5-18, and SLI off.

Did a fresh install of windows vista home prem x64 yesterday, removed 2gb of ram for the install - I was able to enable SLI memory, which then moved the timings to the optimized settings. All went well, booted into the system great, updated to SP1 - shut down the machine and added the other 2gb.

Now in the BIOS, SLI memory settings are X'd out, I am unable to turn this on. The sticks are identical, but now it is telling me its unable to find SLI compatible sticks - defaulting everything back to 5-5-5-18. Manually changing the timings to 4-4-4-12 results in startup errors and a reset of the BIOS.

That being said, a) would that make a huge difference and b) anyone know why this may be happening?

Thanks ahead of time

Dram timing configuration
norm, safe, ultra, fast

SDR/DDR Cas Latency
SPD, 2T, 2.5T, 3T

SDR/DDR Ras Active Time
6T, 7T

I recently bought 4 gigs of OCZ SLI-Ready Edition Dual Channel PC6400 DDR2 800MHz ram. I have a 680i motherboard it has an nforce chipset and is sli capable. My 4 gigs of ram all function properly when set to the standard setting in the bios. My problem is that when i set my ram in the bios to the EPP/SLI setting my computer freezes and becomes useless. At this point my diagnostic light for my computer tells me that the memory modules are detected, but a memory failure has occured. Only if i remove a 1 gig stick will my computer boot. I've tested every stick individually and they all work fine. It's just for some reason i'm unable to use my ram epp and sli features while using 4 gigs of ram. Could this have something to do with the voltage?

A:EPP/SLI ram problem, memory timing question

I've discovered that i can't run my 4 gigs of ram with the epp/sli setting if i select my memory command rate at 1T, i have to use the 2T setting. Now my timings are 4-4-4-15 2T. I'm using nvidia ntune to modify these changes and under system clocks my memory bus frequency is still listed as 801 mhz. Should i bother tinkering with my settings any further or is this the best performance i can get out of my ram? Supposedly these sticks of ram can reach 1066 mhz.

According to AIDA64's overclocking section, my memory's timing is running a 4-4-4-12 @ 533MHz (Frequency according to BIOS). All my chips are 6-6-6-18 @ 400MHz (DDR2-800) except for the one that is 5-4-4-12 @ 266MHz (DDR2-533).

I thought that the higher the CAS latency the slower, so if you're running mixed memory, the CAS latency will be underclocked to the chip with the greatest value to keep the system stable, and I assume the same applies to all other timings. So shouldn't it be running at 6-6-6-18 @ 533MHz? If so, why is it running at 4-4-4-12?

Or do I not know what I'm talking about? Thanks!

For reference this is my memory:
2GB Kingston TYG410-ELF DDR2-800
2GB Kingston TYG410-ELF DDR2-800
2GB Kingston KVR533D2/1GR DDR2-533

Ordered 2 sticks of (Crucial) 256 PC2100 DDR RAM and just got them today. First tried to install both together and at the boot screen system stalled on NVRAM check. I've tried putting each of the sticks in my computer one at a time in each slot and it works then.

Is this a mobo issue or are the 2 sticks just incompatible with eachother? I ordered both from crucial so I kind of figured that all would be well, but I guess I was wrong. Tried calling Crucial tech support and the guy I talked to had no idea what to do.

Any ideas? Defective mobo? It's a PC Chips 817, with a athlonxp 1600, 300W power, so I have no idea what could be wrong. Thanks for your help.

I would like to top off my new HP AMD A10-7300 Radeon R6, 10 Compute Cores 4C+6G laptop board with a mem upgrade from 6gb to 12gb or 16gb with better speed, without going nuts. However, unlike my old & dead HP dv7 which was quite accessible to most of the parts, including a 2nd empty HD bay which worked great, Crucial warned when I allowed them to look at my system for potential upgrade of the system memory, one of the chips is underneath a component that needs removing to access the 2nd chip.I have used Diskeeper on all of my systems for several years to good advantage of keeping drives defragged better than Microsoft's Defrag. We have recently purchased a number of NB250-10G Netbooks, some have been ordered with 2GB of memory and some with 1GB. For a few 1GB machines, upgrade 2GB modules have been purchased to retrospectively upgrade them to 2GB (Correct DDR3 Toshiba Kingston KTT1066D3/2G).

When the memory upgrade is installed, when the netbook is started it switches on, then switches off, then switches on - this cycle continues. I have tried many KTT1066D3/2G modules and all do the same in any NB250-10G netbooks that were shipped with 1GB.

_All_ 2GB modules work in _all_ NB250-10G's purchased with 2GB. _No_ 2GB modules work in _any_ NB250-10G's purchased with 1GB.

Both the NB250-10Gs supplied with 1GB and 2GB have same bios version (1.3) and bios settings.

After a quick web search this is a known issue.

I just installed two 16 gb DDR4-2400 modules on my Tiny desktop and within minutes the computer just shuts down.  I tested the modules on another like desktop and same issue occured.  I am however able to sucessfully run with a single 16 GB or a combination of 16 GB and 4 GB modules.  The shutdown occurs only when using the full 32 gb.  I have verified with Crucial that the modules are compatible.  I have also tried another set of modules with same results.  Chipset and Bios are up to date and this is a clean build of Windows 10, version 1809.  Thoughts on what could be the issue?

A:M710q Tiny: Memory RAM upgrade to 32 GB = Shutdown in minutes. Solved: use Kingston memory

I have run into the same issue with Lenovo M900 Tiny model 10FM and above at my workplace.  One stick of 16GB will work (using that now), two sticks however shuts down the system 1 minute into power up...
I used Crucials memory checker, received two DDR4-2400 sodimm 1.2v cl17 16gb dual sided chips (kit of 2x16GB).  System would power up, go into Windows 10, be up for Approx 1 minute and system would power off.  You cannot repower the system, it turns on and shuts off immediately.  Pulling power to the device, plugging in again, will let it power to same point as before.  Approx 1 minute into having both modules installed.
Currently allowing the 16gb to remain to monitor for any issues.  The stick that came out was from the manufacturer, an 8gb with QC M02089 on it, no other markings.  It will not work in either socket with the 16gb chip.  TC steps as follows:
- Both 16 gb chips installed, power off after 1 minute up
- Single 16gb chip, stable
- Single 8gb chip, stable
- Swap 16gb chips in sockets, power off after 1 minute up
- New set of 16 gb modules, same issue as before (these were slightly higher freqency of 2666MHz)
Seems like a power issue on the mobo, too much draw.  As a cannot find any information on the installed chip itself creates a problem I can't get past.

I cannot say for 100% sure, but yes, I think the number of memory chips on the board can indicate density. The symptoms you have described indicate a density issue to a "T." The memory shows up fine in the BIOS, but the PC refuses to work with it. I have suggested this cause to several others and when they purchased the lower density memory with 16 chips on the board, their problem was solved.

Hey Everyone,

I have been getting the BSOD several times over the last few days. It will happen when I am playing games, browsing the web, and once when I hadnt even started any programs right after startup on the desktop.

When it happens I normally get the message "MEMORY MANAGEMENT" and twice saying "Modification of system code or a critical data structure was SOMETHING" (Sorry cant remember how it ended)

A friend saw it and said it was an issue with my ram so I did the built it ram check for windows and it came up with nothing. Occasionally it will do a diskcheck on startup on my side drive (not the one with windows installed) and fix an issue or two.

In windows event viewer there are several "critical"s saying
source: Kernel-Power
event ID: 41
Task Category:63

Googling this brought me in two main directions. To do a ramcheck which I did and updating audio drivers which are updated fully but I reinstalled the newest driver

Thank you for the time, if I need to post anything else please let me know.

Benchmarking with SiSoftware Sandra while using 2 gigs at 1T gives me a bandwidth of 5700 mb/s. With the 4 gigs at 2T i get about 5400 mb/s. I was wondering for gaming which would be more beneficial? Does the extra 300 mb/s make a big difference in performance at all?

I'm back -- several years having a functioning computer has kept me away.

So... I have some faulty RAM (I believe - failed memory test and getting memory related BSODs) that needs replacing. Also, my system can't handle some new games. F1 2015 was a disaster. They re-did the game engine, and I could barely get more than 10 FPS. Time to upgrade some things.

I was thinking of just replacing the RAM and upgrading the video card. I currently have a GTX560. Thinking about going for a GTX970.

I know that the CPU and the Motherboard are limiting/bottleneck (potentially?) factors. The Motherboard is an old GA-M68MT-S2 (PCI-E 1.1 x16... yes, 1.1). The CPU is a Phenom II 1100T 6-core at 3.2 GHz.

1) How much would that MoBo/CPU bottleneck a video card upgrade? I've read it will, but negligibly so (a few percent).
2) Am I stupid to keep that processor?
3) Does it make sense to just upgrade the video card? Or is the whole system in need of a rebuild?
4) Is the GTX 970 the best bang for my buck, or should I go with something else? (Its price is the max I am willing to pay for something right now.)

My goals here are to be able to play recent games at high settings. I know I need a much better video card to be able to do that... but do I need to replace the processor too?

I'm not too eager (nor do I have the budget) to rebuild the whole thing at this point.

What do y'all think?

I have a Dell 1521 running Vista, I have had no issues with the laptop, it runs great. I wanted to added mmore memory just for and little boost and max out the system. I purchased some Kingston 2 gig ram modules which are compatible for the system and installed them. The Bios does not register that I have 4 gigs of Ram just the normal 2 gigs. I have updated the Bios incase this was an issue and this did not fix the issue. I have reseated the ram, still just the 2 gigs are registered.

Is there anything else that I need to do for my system to resgister the other 2 gigs of ram for the system.

Welcome to TSG compman_74? Happy Hunting...

Have you tried the RAM individually? It may be bad.

My 18 month old laptop decided to have a host of problems and I have decided to return it to HP for repair/replacement since it is still under warranty. No surprise that when they return it, chances are likely that it will be restored to a fresh install of Win8.1 which is the original OS. I hadn't planned on having to set up the computer again, but now knowing that it will happen, my question is:

Should I Go Ahead and Immediately Upgrade to Windows 10 (before setting up the computer again and reloading all my programs, etc.?)

Should I Set up the computer again (reinstall all software) with the fresh 8.1 OS and then upgrade to Windows 10?

Given all the problems I'm reading about I'm tempted to wait, but feel that perhaps a lot of the problems are because of unstable versions of whatever OS each computer might have. In my case, it will be a totally fresh Win 8.1 for migration.

Thoughts or comments welcome!

A:Win 8.1 OS Reset & Timing of Upgrade to Windows 10

My opinion about upgrading to windows 10:
I won't, most important reason is because my system is probably not 100% compatible, even though GWX app says it is.The windows updates are terrible, I want to have control about the updates and know what is causing the problem of not booting into the OS or not opening a program or whatever problem an update may give you. Its good enough with windows 8.1I don't want Microsoft to get almost all of my data because they send it unencrypted (as far as I know) to their servers for cortana. Also because the apps from the store can easily use the customer ID and everything else they require.I don't want the startmenu, I hate it ******* hard. Before I had my laptop I already hated that menu. I can't and won't get used to that terrible feature.

Also, I yet can't upgrade, yes I have the GWX app, but the windows 10 message in windows update is gone.
If my laptop dies and there are no more places to buy window 8.1 for my laptop and/or desktop I'll go for Apple Mac OS or Linux.

OK so about 1-2 months ago I got a New CPU and RAM (RMA cuz old ones caused BSOD) so now I em noticing that I get random freezes when I restart (forced to manually shut down) and when I'm downloading this 1 file from 1 website it gets to 99% the my pc Freezes. (this is the site apache friends - xampp for windows only happens when I try to download the .zip file 1) and I was looking at my CPU and Memory etc. in CPUz and noticed a odd thing about my Ram the 2 sticks are running at to different frequency and that it isn't in dual channel mode (I have a .TXT file from CPUz showing my info

Thanks in advanced

(if i need to add or attach any thing just let me now)

Hi to all at Techspot. I'm not a techie but noticed that there was two kinds of memory, DDR3 and DDR5. My Question is,
What's the difference between DDR3 Memory and the Graphics DDR5 Memory and if the DDR5 is in anyway better then why is it not used for desktop computer memory instead of DDR3.
I know some apps are taking advantage of or utilizing graphics memory Thanks for any explanation

A:What's the difference between DDR3 memory and GDDR5 memory?

As far as I know, memories used on video cards have different characteristics than memories used on PC.. since this is beyond my knowledge, I'm sorry I can't explain much more in details.. Just wait for other members with deeper knowledge that can give some information regarding of this matter

I have a TP T530, 2359-4LU, that has Win 10 installed.  Originally had 4gb of ram. After upgrading to 6gb of ram, system ran fine. Went to seep mode when closing the laptop lid as normal, but when opening the lid, the device would not wake/resume, instead with a black screen the device would shut down.  I have read something about possibly too much voltage needed by the new ram and some devices can alter those settings in the bios, but I can't find that for my system. Any suggestions? Doug

I have just purchased 2* 1gb ram sticks to upgrade from 2gb to 4gb. The ram is:

Samsung Original DDR - 400MHz, 2GB (1024MB), PC3200, DIMM, Non-ECC RAM Random Access Memory, CL3, Desktop 2 x 1 gig sticks

It is made by samsung and i purchased this specifically as it is exactly the same as the ram i currently have (at least i think). Basically when i add it to my 2 current sticks to make up 4 1gig stick windows will not start. It either blue screens after it gets to the desktop and says there is a problem with 'MEMORY MODULE' i think or it says it is shutting down to prevent damage in a black screen early in the startup. When i turn it on with all sticks in it does a memory check and says 3'xxxxxxxx bytes OK' - it should be '4xxxxxxx' for a start as it is 4gig.

I have run the computer with just the new sticks in and it runs fine - however i tried it with just 2 sticks in the 'secondary slots' (the 2 slots that were previously empty) and it boots up fine - however CPU-Z tells me that the timings are all different. Normally it is 'Freq: 201Mhz' when there is RAM in the 2 first slots, but when i run it in the second two slots it varys between '157.9' and '158.0' Mhz.

Any ideas? Why would the same ram run at different speeds in different slots?

Any help much appreciated - Thanks

A:RAM upgrade problem - strange timing behavior

if it is the same ram, then something is not right. Run memtest 86+ booted from a floppy or CD. Any errors you get are bad. Note the blocks that come up. You may have defective ram or possibly a bad ram slot?

The keyboard of my second-hand Yoga 12 is not following my typing. In particular, when I press the spacebar quickly after a word, the spacebar seems to have a priority over the previous keys. Here is a comparison of an external USB keyboard vs Thinkpad while I just type "df" followed by a space as fast as I can. USB KB   : df df df df df df df df df dfThinkpad: f d dfdf f ddf df fd fd fd f d This is more subtle than it seems, the typing is on point unless I go faster like I'm more used to with my PC keyboard. I thought that I was just not used to laptop keyboards but I'm more and more convinced that It's an issue with the Thinkpad itself. Apparently a lot of Thinkpads have similar issues and the following thread discusses just that in more technical details:https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-T400-T500-and-newer-T/Keyboard-firmware-scrambles-keys-on-all-... I'm now wondering if I'm in the same boat or if my problem is different. I still made a new thread here because I was wondering if anyone had similar issues with their Yoga 12 or S1. I'm also hoping for a BIOS update if this problem is fixable software-wise (I'm already on the latest BIOS 1.34). Perhaps it's an hardware issue and the only fix is a new keyboard, or maybe the problem can't be fixed at all?

Here is the trace route to the vpn server ( ran direct from my isp connection )

I noticed there is a time out in the trace route to the vpn server...could this be the cause of the issue?

I'm doing a repair/optimization job for one of my computer repair customers, and ive run across a very strange issue. aside from other things, when you change the resolution, instead of having it say "reverting in 10 seconds" it says "reverting in 15000 seconds". Ive never run across something like this before, but the owner of this particular computer is not very intelligent in terms of the programs they use (no-name registry cleaners/optimizers, no antivirus, IE as main browser). Just wondering if anyone has any ideas or would happen to be able to point me in the direction of the correct registry keys. thanks for the help!

I have had this stupid problem occuring 3 times in the last week on 3 different websites that I'm supposed to do templates for.The first one I figured was because the site was from another country so maybe they blocked my IP.. But now these next two I can't load or view FTP on.I thought it was just an FTP issue but I can't even load the domains in my internet browser at all.I tried Flushing my DNS, ever since I learned how to do it I always wish it is a cure-all. It's not though and I would really appreciate any suggestions.. Could this be a modem problem with our internet router or whatever? When trying to load the websites I get:Connection InterruptedThe connection to the server was reset while the page was loading. When trying to connect to the sites in ftp I get:[20:58:08] SmartFTP v2.5.1006.10[20:58:08] Resolving host name "xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx"[20:58:08] Connecting to xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Port: 21[20:58:29] A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed becauseThe site owner and someone else can view the sites perfectly fine, They're online and running. It's definetly me and it's not an FTP problem.. I don't think.
