Recommend modem only model to replace BT HomeHub

Q: Recommend modem only model to replace BT HomeHub

Hi guys. I'm UK based so models may be a bit unfamiliar to US members. I would guess none of you use BT, (wise move)!

Currently using BT HomeHub V1.0, (yes there's still one out there), on BT broadband line with BT Vision services and with all internal network connections to it connected through a Netgear WNR3500 router. I'm a good level of user (software developer) but definitely NOT a network whizz so chances are I'm missing something important.

The idea was to take DHCP and Wireless control from the HomeHub and give it to the Netgear. Many long attempts later.... These services can be disabled on the HH and enabled on the Netgear easily. However the BT device will not give up control of DHCP and still allow network machines to see the internet! BT HH was given a fixed IP address in the Netgear, the same as its standard allocation when it is in control (192.168.1.254), and this was used for the gateway address in TCP/IP setup and in Netgear settings. I can get everything set up internally so the Netgear is in control with the HH DHCP and Wireless switched off, machines can all see each other and talk to each other perfectly, but no one sees the internet!

I would really like to replace the HH completely so was looking for a basic non-router type modem to leave the WNR3500 as the network manager. Thought of the Netgear DM111P as it was an economic Netgear match but it has such rotten reviews for reliability in terms of heat that I went off that model and Netgear don't list any others.

Any recommendations re which modem units would easily do the job and match the WNR3500? Or can anyone tell me why I can't set it up as I want with current gear?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have found and am currently considering the Draytek Vigor 120. Vigor say: "You can connect any device to the Vigor 120 which has a PPPoE client facility. This means the actual connection to your ISP is still PPPoA (unlike other modems which only provide PPPoE native bridging), which is a unique feature of this product and makes it compatible with all UK ISPs where PPPoA is used as standard." Should work ok with the Netgear WNR3500 and anything to make for a simpler more controllable connection.

Anyone know this or can offer advice as to whether it is a suitable unit?

Hi,

I've been looking at a low end 2 in 1 hybrid, it's mainly to be used as a laptop but occasionally as a tablet. I've seen a few issues noted in this forum and some appear to have been resolved by updates.
I've been looking at this particular model as it can be had for ?189 from Currys in the UK. I like this model because it has a FHD screen and is currently the cheapest. The other other options are;

Asus T100 - ?200
HP Pavillion x2 2015 - ?240

These are a little of my price range.

Acer Switch 10 - ?250
Asus T100 Chi - ?300

I think ?200 is the right price point for this type of tablet. I've read a few reviews online, some good, some bad but it's not really clear what FW version they are using as I know this model had a rocky start.
I'm a little unsure about the 8.9" screen, it might just be too small. I do like the idea of 2 batteries, as battery life is a key factor.

To any owners...would you buy this device again? Is the screen size OK to use as a laptop or are you finding it too small? Are the majority of issues resolved by firmware?

Thanks for looking

A:Satellite Click Mini L9W-B - would recommend buying this model?

The Toshiba click mini is great value for money in regards to also having a full HD screen. Warning however about the very common issue of the battery not charging from the dock. I got mine working eventually by trial and error (or luck). This is the only minus point about this tablet.. As well as Toshiba not responding quickly with the possible update/solution, When everything works as it should it is great

Hello all,

My computer has been making a lot of noise lately, in fact it's been going on for probably the past 8 months or so. The first month I mostly ignored it hoping it would go away, which it did, then a few weeks later it came back and I decided it was time to investigate.

I have narrowed the problem down to being the power supply fan, mainly because it's very easy to hear and detect that it's coming from the back of my PC (and in that area). So I cracked the case open, unscrewed a buncha stuff, took the power supply apart somewhat so I could try to dust off the fan, but there was no dust to be seen. I dusted it anyway, removed some plastic pieces they had in there that seemed to serve no purpose, popped it back together, crossed my fingers that I had fixed it, but no luck.

The odd thing is that this noise will seem to come and go, usually it will be on jet engine sound level for ~2 weeks, then be relatively quiet for a month or so, every time I hope that it magically fixed itself, but now I've decided I need to do something about it.

The model is a SilverStone SST-ST65ZF, 650 Watt supply w/ PFC (whatever that means).

So on to my actual question. What I'm trying to figure out is, should I order the same replacement piece? Is this a solid piece of equipment and I just stumbled across a bad one originally? Is there a more ideal power supply with a quieter fan (in the same general price range, say <$200) that I should order instead?

All,

Thanks to everyone that takes the time to read this. I want to replace my OEM MSI MS-6577 mobo that came with my HP for another version of the MSI MS-6577 mobo but the new one would have an AGPx4 slot and the current one only has PCI slots. I read that replacing the motherboard on OEM systems with Windows XP like mine has, will cause big problems unless it for the exact same make and model motherboard. In my situation, it is the exact same make and model but a different version of the mobo that would have an additional AGP slot. Would this give me BSOD or would the swap go smoothly? I am also hoping not to have to reinstall Windows XP without having to go buy a copy as I read you can't do that off recovery discs with OEM Windows XP builds. Thank you everyone again.:grinthumb

A:Can I replace my OEM mobo with the same make & model but different version?

The problem would be with Microsoft

I believe you could put a different version of motherboard on there, heck, you could put an entirely different make of motherboard if you wanted as long as it fits the case's form factor. Simply, the screw holes on the motherboard have to align with the holes on the case.

The trouble you will run into is with Microsoft. Your copy of XP is associated with the serial number, model, and make of your present motherboard, and it's recorded in Microsoft's database. That's what happens when you activate a Microsoft product. The operating system or software will get your motherboard's information and record it. Now here comes the problem...

If you put in a new motherboard, the operating system on your hard drive is going to look up your previous motherboard's information when it boots up. If it sees a new motherboard, it will say, "I'm not associated with you, so I must not be licensed with you!" and it will tell you to contact Microsoft or buy a new copy of Windows.

What you have to do then is call Microsoft and ask them if you can associate your copy of Windows with a new motherboard. They will want to know why. Usually, they will only do that if your motherboard failed, exploded, or somehow became destroyed so you had to replace it. I don't know about motherboard upgrades. To Microsoft, each and every motherboard is a separate computer, and you are only licensed for one computer.

What if I replace the motherboard with the exact same model BUT change processors? Will I have any issues?
Was in the process of updating the bios. Not sure what I did wrong but it's dead. Have to send it back to super micro. I ordered an identical motherboard. But was updating the bios so I could switch from a quad core westmere chip to a hex.
Everything I have read states the OS is married to the motherboard (Win7 64 OEM). So if I get away with no issues from the motherboard swap, will the processor swap give me issues.
My system is a dual boot ubuntu 64/Win7 setup. I don't want to reinstall if I can help it. Advice would be appreciated.

(thanks admins for correcting this. Didn't mean to hijack that other thread)

you should not have any problems with Win7 even if its an OEM version. MS can reset if you have to call don't worry, just call them and explain what happened they are not going to crawl through the phone line and tear your head off or anything.

I splashed some tea on the keyboard of my 510-15ISK Laptop (ideapad) model 80SR and now some of the keys have stopped working. I am in the UK so this is the layout/style of keyboard it uses (not the US layout). The backlight still works fine, though, and the laptop itself works normally, it is only some keys which have stopped working. I have fixed this problem on other laptops by simply replacing the keyboard, but on my ideapad the keyboard is internal (it doesn't pop out) so I don't know how to do it. Furthermore, I can't find any information about the keyboard for this laptop anywhere on the internet: not on google, not on youtube, not even on this Lenovo website. How/where can I repair/replace the keyboard? Will it be expensive? I have seen that sometimes only individual keys need to be fixed, not the entire keyboard, could this be an option? My laptop is still under warranty if that means anything. Thanks for any help.

Last Friday I got rid of my Verizon DSL service and switched to Comcast cable.

They gave me a modem but neglected to tell me that I am leasing it for $3 a month. I'm not sure if I'll be sticking with Comcast long enough (I may switch back to Verizon when my year contract is up, especially if FIOS is available in my hood by then) to save any money by buying my own, but just in case I decide to, I have a few questions.

Besides compatibility, what should I look for when buying a modem? Will my choice affect down or speed up download/upload speeds?

I found this link which lists modems compatible with Comcast service.

I went to newegg.com and typed 'modem' in to the search button and the first modem on the list was compatible. It is a LINKSYS BEFCMU10 for $40.99 after mail-in rebate.

The modem Comcast is leasing to me is an Arris TM502G.
P.S. Comcast is also charging me $2.95 per month for Service Protection Plan I didn't ask for. Does anyone know what this covers and if I can drop it? If not, I'll call and ask.

I'm helping someone remotly via Teamviewer.
She has TWC (Time Warner Cable) ISP.

PROBLEM: When she boots her PC, she usually has no internet access, unless she reboots the modem.

It is a purchased modem, not a TWC "leased" modem.
I don't know who purchased/installed the modem, but it is probably old, and i'm guessing that may be the problem.
I'm guessing she needs a new modem, but i don't know how to be sure
She has a router, and connects from her laptop wirelessly.

Hi. In over my head (not hard to do in this area ) I have Centurylink service and currently are renting their modem/wifi box. I want to replace it with my own modem and my Linksys EA4500 N900router. What do I need to buy to replace the modem so that it is compatible with Centurylink? and do I need to know the IP address currently associated with it to set up the new modem?

A:Replace Centurylink Modem/Wifi

You need to check either them to see if they allow that and what all you need to configure and let them know, they may not allow modems that aren't approved from them work or may charge you for modem rental anyways as it may be part of their service. You may also loose the ability for them them to provide you troubleshooting if they are unfamiliar with the units you choose. It appears they are a DSL provider and not Cable is that correct? For DSL you'd have to program the router with your DSL username and password to connect, so you'll need to know that. You shouldn't need to know any IP address for the modem as that's assigned by them but you will need to be able to access your router to configure it, so either it's IP address or use the CD Wizard to configure it.

Use a non-default login password for both routers. Don't allow remote (internet) login unless you need to use that feature.

Protect both wireless networks with WPA2-PSK or WPA-PSK encryption with a strong passphrase. If you are not going to use the ARRIS's Wi-Fi disable it.

Allow physical access to the routers only to people you trust.

Greetings!
I'm having a problem with a computer getting on dial-up internet via a USB modem.

To begin with, this is my GRANDMOTHER's computer which sits at her house with NO INTERNET. I have however gathered as much information as possible from the computer while I was there.

The problem:
The computer gets a BSOD as soon as the USB modem tries to connect. The computer also gets BSOD if you pull out the USB cable from the modem while the computer is on. Nothing bad happens if you restart without the modem and then plug it in, only unplugging it causes BSOD (along with trying to connect to internet). The modem is a HSM56 Smartlink Model SL-FU05.

What I've done so far:
Updated video card driver, updated modem driver, deleted modem software & driver and reinstalled, uninstalled antivirus (Avira AntiVir), and of course restarted multiple times. Windows is otherwise in default configuration.

Physical Limitations:
The computer only has one PCI slot and no other internal motherboard connections (pci-e, agp, etc). The single PCI slot is occupied by a video card. The motherboard does not have a built in modem, but it does have an ethernet jack.

More Detailed Information (via sticky post):
This version of Windows 7 . . .
- is x86 (32-bit) Ultimate
- is the second installation, first was WinXP Pro
- is an OEM version that was purchased separately [GLC-00182-pmr]

- The hardware is approximately 6 months old, I built the whole thing myself
- The OS is approximately 1 month old

- The hardware is approximately 6 months old... Read more

Try deactivating your firewall/antivirus program. It might be preventing you from establishing connection.

Hi after our internet went out for 3 days straight and calling frontier about 20 times they finally gave us a new model 7500 modem to replace the previous. The linksys e1200 router which had worked perfectly fine before the new modem has decided to not allow me to connect online. Sometimes it says im connected to internet but web browser does not connect, sometimes it says no internet access. I have no idea what i am doing so im not sure if it is a modem or router issue. I have done full reboots of both and powered on correctly.

additional info : plugging in the modem into ports 1-3 do not light up the modems ports lights, only port 4 seems to light up when plugged in......... however computers light up all the ports when hard wired to E1 - E4

i also downloaded the latest firmware update for the linksys e1200 router

All fire walls are shut off and no WEP ( we live in middle of nowhere so a key is not needed )

Please remember i am not computer savvy so please go easy with the responses thanks !

i have at&t/frontier uverse and their internet, and long time ago provided me with a 2wire i38HG gateway that has 4 lan ports, then the rj-11 jack that i have cat3 going to their junk on the outside of my house.

the 100mbps of this i38HG in my office has got to go.

I hate calling frontier so much, i would rather just newegg or ebay a replacement that gives me gigabit lan.
anyone know what i can replace it with so that everything still works?
or do i have to get it from frontier?
this would be for gigabit on the 4 lan ports... i have 2 or more computers in my office and when i want to move a 50+ GB worth of files/data between them it takes too long.

Hi Just as the title says, I have a T460s but am underwhelmed with the touchpad technology Would like to see if I can put a newer style 'precision touchpad' with gestures, etc. in it if I can find one on ebay, etc. Is, say the T480s touchpad (Elan) the same dimensions and electronically compatible with the T460s' synaptics touchpad interface? Thank youAvery

As all knows due to low quality of material using in top and bottoms covers of S400. I tired to replace it again and again. do you have suggestion I can replac it with another laptop body of levono. because S400 covers materials are not high quality of materials

Hello forumI have a T480s and I would like to downgrade my screen so the native resolution of the replaced screen is 1366x768.Why am I doing that? well, working with higher resolutions makes my eye ache.I tried working with my native 1920x1080 resolution with higher DPI, bit the detail level is still hurting my eyes.Of course, when manually reducing native resolution the result is a slightly-blurry view. That?s not good either. So, my question is ?I want to put a screen of a previous Lenovo model that will fit my laptop, and will provide 1366x768 resolution. What are those models that has the same physical screen alignment? Thanks!Roy

I have a new nightmare.

Got the BT HomeHub a few weeks ago - it's great - most of the time 8mb.

It's built in wireless never really annoyed me until i decided i would use it. I took out my wireless access point and turned on the bt wireless and now no internet through wireless.

If I plug into my switch, I can do as much as I want but when i d/c and just do wireless it goes crazy on all my pcs.

PLUS DHCP doesnt work on it either. So I got static IPs and would like some help.

Please.

THanks.

A:BT HomeHub problems.

It sounds like you either have interference with the wireless signal, or the HomeHub is defective. Have you tried changing wireless channels? Did you look around for sources of 2.4ghz interference, wireless phones, microwave ovens, other WiFi equipment, etc.?

Well basically this has been the problem since day one of having BT internet.

I changed from tiscali to BT and got the homehub as part of the package.

Since day one the wireless has been weird it would sometimes connect via wireless- but then 80% of the time it does not connect.

I wondered what the problem was?

Any answer will be appreciated cheers.

Installed the Hub and phones through filters as per instructions & everything was working fine. However, when someone now calls the house phone it redirects the call through the hub phone leaving the house phone dead. Really not sure what is happening here & would appreciate some advice - yes I have been in touch with BT who do not appear to have a clue.

Thanks

Running XP Pro on Dell Latitude Laptop without inbuilt wireless.

I have recently changed from a Linksys ADSL Modem to a BT HomeHub. My PCMCIA card is a 3COM Wireless 11g 3CRWE154G72 which happily recognised and connected to the old modem and could also see a Belkin 54g modem at my location.

Since changing to the HomeHub the 3COM doesn't even 'see' the HomeHub but continues to 'see' the Belkin.

To make matters even more peculiar I have tried a Linksys USB modem WUSB854GR which 'sees' both the HomeHub and the Belkin and I can connect to the HomeHub without problem.

I have downloaded and installed the most up to date drivers for both adapters.

Any views on how to encourage the PCMCIA card to 'see' the HomeHub?

Many thanks - Simpson.

Hi,
I have a bt homehub router and would like to know if its possible to prioritise bandwidth to certain PC's using the internet. The problem i am having is that a housemate is streaming video alot in the evenings and causing online games to lag and not be playable, and web surfing is noticably slower.

I figure if i was priority for the internet i would only use minimal bandwidth for games/surfing, then the rest can be used to download/steam video etc - which would not be affected.

Im pretty sure this wont be possible on a bthomehub but i thought id check because im not very experienced with routers.

perhaps there is a way to restrict users to a certain amount of bandwidth if the above does not work? Or if anyone knows any way to solve this problem it would be greatly appriciated.

thanks in advance

ollie

A:Prioratise users over a bt homehub?

review the docs for your model. Doesn't seem like those support any form of bandwidth control.
