A few problems after SURT (tried to install SP2)

Q: A few problems after SURT (tried to install SP2)

Hi,

I have tried to install SP2 on my Vista Home Premium 32 bit (Dutch). After evenings trying to fix some problems with FixIt and Readiness it's going better and better. But SP2 won't install yet. In my checksur.log there are a few problems, after more than 900 were repaired. Can someone help me to fix these problems so I can try to install SPV again?

Preferred Solution: A few problems after SURT (tried to install SP2)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello BasW and welcome to the forums

Yay, I've finally got a nice SURT log to play with Because you only have manifest files corrupted (not their matching .mum and .cat files), we can't trace them through an update. We're going to have to manually trace them through the registry. Please bear with me whilst I prepare instructions!

Dear Sevenforums,

I just installed a new HDD by WD into a HP DV7T (2008), everything has been going well up until I tried to Update Windows. I did not retain anything from the previous installation as the previous hard drive up and quit on me!

I activated windows and had it confirmed as genuine.

I followed the instructions posted on another page and tried to install SURT and got an error: 0xc8000247.

I was hoping for some suggestions, Direct X , Java, MSE and Mechwarrior Online wouldn't install.

Perhaps a driver issue?

Have a great day all!

Sincerely,
Noodle123

A:New HDD, Windows will not update, cannot install SURT error code below

This error is due to problems with the hard drive drivers.
First, open Device Manager, and click on View > Show hidden devices

Are any devices showing with yellow triangles or red crosses?
If so, Uninstall them, then reboot and see if that cures the problem.

if not...

Hello, I recently replaced a defective HDD in my laptop with a new WD Black 750G HDD, re-installed my Windows 7 image using my recovery DVDs, but can't seem to update Windows OR start Windows Defender (error 0x8e5e0247). I followed the steps from "Windows Update Posting Instructions" and am listing the results:-

1. System Update Readiness Tool installation resulted in error:0xc8000247.

2. Also performed SFC Scan three separate times and received the same "WRP found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them." (see attached CBS)

When I manually try to install updates, I get "Windows Update cannot check for updates because the service is not running. Restart your computer." But if look in local services (Task Manager) Windows Update is started & running.

Any help in resolving this issue would be greatly appreciated.
PS: There were some programs included in the restore, Norton AV being one of them. I uninstalled it, then downloaded the Norton Removal Tool & ran that as well. I'm mentioning this because it was recommended several times in other threads regarding this same error.

I am going to ask a quick question while SURT is running on my laptop. I am very vulnerable on that pc as the updates have not updated since reinstall of win7 sp1 yesterday. Can I turn off my internet connection while that program is running? Thank you.

A:Running SURT for update problems-Compaq C62 laptop

Since no one has offered any advice, I just kept truckin'. I downloaded and I ran the SURT package. I have been at all of this since 11 this morning and succeeded in downloading 148 windows security updates. I was told after reinstalling sp1 there would be around 200 but the windows update menu indicated that 68 were "recommended" not important. That would bring the number to 196. I think I will just not worry about those 68 as they are not "important". Hope I am back in safe territory.

Because my satellite internet will take ages (like 80 hours or something) to download SURT, would I be able to download it onto a USB (via WIFI from my town's library, onto my laptop) and then install/run it on my home desktop computer?

Please forgive if this is a stupid question

A:can I run SURT from a USB stick?

You can - but I'd advise copying it to the desktop and running that copy, unless it's USB3, as it's a very large file.

Selecting Run puts the file in the Temporary Internet Files area.

Once the SURT has run, that is it. It has done all that it is going to do. There is no start menu entry and there is no user interface.

For the last two months I have been having to reinstall the same win updates over & over?-
Now its the Windows Malicious Software Removal tool that keeps coming up, and as soon as I install it
the updt icon immediately pops up saying updates are ready for your computer (over & over)?

I tried to download the Win7 32-bit SURT tool from your forum link, but it says it's Not available?

A:Can't download SURT tool to fix...?

The most likely reason for the MSRT to repeat is that it crashed at some point.
The most likely reason for that, is that the machine is infected.
Try this link for the CheckSUR tool...

Download System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 (KB947821) [October 2014] from Official Microsoft Download Center

(direct link - 32-bit Windows 7CheckSUR)

Also...

Please download and install Malwarebytes Anti-malware (free version) from http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free/ - UNtick 'Enable free trial of MBAM Premium' at the end of the installation - and update it, then run a full scan in your main account, and Quick scans in any other user accounts.

Quarantine everything it finds

The pc is definitely backleveled since I had to restore. It has all updates up to 7/12. While I have had any problems with updates (so far) I thought that it might be wise to install the SURT. My only concern is whether that would create problems with updates since I am so far behind.

thanks

(I could not find an answer for this question which may well be a dumb question.)

A:SURT WIN7 64bit

It only corrects any problems it finds - it doesn't install anything new.

Unless you're seeing problems with updating or the like, then there should be no need to run the tool.

I'm trying to follow the posting guidelines before I post my Windows update problem but don't know which SURT file to download, could someone please help?

My computer properties are :

Windows 7 Home Premium
Copyright 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
64-bit Operating System

(I have not been able to succesfully download/install Service Pack 1, which is the problem I will eventually ask about, and every option I see for SURT has an SP, which I don't have at all.)

ETA - Sorry guys, just saw I wasn't reading things properly.

A:which SURT file should I download?

For the SURT you need to d/l this file: x64-based (64-bit) versions of Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 7

taking the two issues people have come back to me with

SURT

The SURT has not fixed the problem; the same 4 updates fail as before i.e. :
- Definition Update for Microsoft Office 2010 (KB982726) 32-Bit Edition,
- Security Update for Microsoft Outlook 2010 (KB2837597) 32-Bit Edition
- Update for Microsoft Office 2010 (KB2589352) 32-Bit Edition
- Update for Microsoft Office 2010 (KB2597087) 32-Bit Edition

Log files don't mean a lot to me. But here goes for anyone who can interpret. Attached are the simple log files in plain and CBS zips after the SURT run - before and after failed software update

IE11 and YouTube: Someone asked for a better description of the problem. Best done with an example: If I open YouTube and attempt to type a search string e.g. Joe Bloggs, it locks up with a YouTube failing to respond pop-up at the bottom. On the other hand, if I type a search string into Google e.g. Joe Bloggs on YouTube, then I can click any of the links and YouTube runs perfectly, and more to the point, will accept any new search string.

In the mean time, I'll go look for updates after next Patch Tues/Wed so I can shut my machines down sensibly

A:Wrap up to the SURT suggestion (and IE11)

SURT found nothing wrong - and the CBS logs contain no useful data.

Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested data

Looking down this list of current update failures,

one might be excused for thinking Microsoft has a serious problem which started a couple of days back.

I have spent the last two days trying to re- install failed up dates.

About twelve in all and only relative to two error codes (800F08260) for most of them, then an odd

two with (80070490). First I tried finding a restore point prior to everything going wrong. Windows was

less than appreciative of that and the restore failed. I tried updating single updates manually but no go,

they still failed. Two days back I put in new antivirus and firewall and I wondered if that was the problem,

so I disabled and went back to Defender and Windows firewall. Nope, that made no difference.

So I logged on here, took note of "Windows update posting instructions"

and worked my way down to the SURT program. I attempted to install the version for Win 7 64 bit

and initially it looked good and was installing (9KB947821) (which I was surprised to see was a Hot Fix? )

when it hung. I left it for a while but it just was stuck there, so I killed it with task manager and

downloaded a new version then installed it. It also reached the same point then hung.

If I go look at the update history it shows a failure for (KB947821) but then a success!

I suppose I should think myself lucky but, what I would like to know is, If I instigate Windows Updates

now. will they all work? In other words, was that hot fix the thing needed to... Read more

A:Problem with SURT hanging when downloading (KB947821)

For everyone's info, the re-run of ten windows updates, failed when 35% into the re-boot.

good evening, I have tried following your instructions to post information regarding the error, but surt fails to execute the hotfix.
For the past month, I kept getting disconnected from my wifi, it would stop working, and could not run the troubleshooter either.
I ran windows updater, it did update some files, but failed with 3 having to do with microsoft net framework.
I play FSX and P3D, today I tried upgrading my P3D to a new version and it failed as well, never happened before.
since I could not run surt, can you please guide me thru what steps I can take, this is driving me crazy and those games are what keeps my brain distracted from thinking about a bladder tumor.
I am enclosing the error logs as well.
Thanks.

I understand that this SURT is supposed to resolve the eternal "searching for updates" so I would be extremely please if someone could tell me where this marvel can be found
Thanks a lot for your time

A:where can I find SURT tool to kick w7 updates

I don't know about SURT but the following will resolve the Windows update problem.

Follow these instructions exactly.
First, set Windows Updates to never check for Updates.
Next reboot your computer, then install KB3020369, if not installed.
Then install KB3172605.

Windows updates should return to normal. You can then reset your updates to automatically check for updates if desired

I'm having a weird problem for the past few days. On my laptop, I can surf to most websites, but can't sign into hotmail and yahoo mail ... I get a 'Page cannot be displayed' error after I enter my username and password.

However, I have a desktop as well ... and at the same time that my laptop browser gives an error, I can logon to the same websites from my desktop without an issue.

I've also have experienced a similar problem logging onto eBay, mapquest etc … and I had the same problem right now while posting this message! My laptop gave a ‘page cannot be displayed’ error when I clicked on ‘preview post’ … so I had to post this from my desktop.

This problem has been haunting me for several days on just these few websites, so its not a case of a server being temporarily down.

The laptop has WinXP, and the browser is IE ver
6.0.2800.1106.xpsp2.030422-1633
The desktop has Win98, and the broswer is IE ver 6.0.2800.1106

I had uninstalled JRE from my laptop earlier this week; and I wondered whether that was causing this problem. But the problem persists even after I reinstalled 'Java 2 Runtime Environment Standard Edition v1.3.1_02'.

Please help!

Please help me in solving a windows update failure. I have windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64.

The two windows updates that fail are
System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 (KB947821)
any Microsoft.NET framework both 4.5.2 (KB2901983) and 4.6.1 (KB3102433)

I found a similar thread and followed the steps in it, but no joy.
Performed SFC /scannow, but the WRP did not find any integrity violations. I tried to run the SURT tool (same tool as KB947821) by a manual download and run but it reports the "hotfix failed to install". So I don't have a SURT tool log to submit.

What's the next step?

It complained about the .NET framework.

I tried SFC /scan now. "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation."
Notice Application log is full of 1001 - Windows Error reporting with the following:

SURT appears to install, but really doesn't run.

Hi all-

This is my first post so hopefully I'm doing it correctly.

I've been having issues with my Windows update service not checking for updates since it says the service isn't running. I have tried various other fixes that I've seen in other threads such as running Malwarebyte and FSS. When running those tools, no issues were found.

I downloaded SURT, and while the installation will initialize, it stops and gives me a 0xc8000247 error.

I ran sfc /scannow and have attached the log file below.

I have also enclosed the CBS logs as requested.

I am running Windows 7 Professional (64-bit) and have SP1 installed. Please advise if there is any additional information that you need. If it matters, the computer in question is an HP Pavilion DV8.

Thank you,

Tom

Windows Update spins forever on "checking for updatse". The Win Update Troubleshooter gives error 0x8024402C. I have tried numerous fixes including some KBs - no success.

Today I tried steps 1 and 2 that you recommend should be run before posting on this problem.

1. The SURT installer has been spinning > 3 hrs on "searching for updates on this computer".

2. I ran "sfc /scannow". It says "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them" and refers to CBS.log - but that is an empty file.

Can anyone advise me?

Hello there!
Okay I have a problem that I can't seem to solve.
I bought a new computer that did not come with a operating system.
So I set up windows 7 64bit. All that went smoothly.
Then when it came to driver installation the problems came.
The computer has no CD drive, so I cant install it from the cds I got with it.
Tried with wired internet connection, nothing. Missing driver
Tried putting the driver for the Ethernet thingy on an usb. Computer did not find the USB drive. Tried all ports on the machine.
Sooo, I basically need to get internet into the computer so I can setup the rest of the drivers.
Tried a wireless WiFi USB stick, but again, the computer does not find the USB's.
BUT it did find my wireless keyboard and mouse assembly? Weird.
Cannot seem to get the computer to recognize a usb memory stick.
Any ideas guys and girls?
Thanks in advance!

I'm fixing a friends laptop - an ancient Toshiba Equium A110-252 (PSAB2E) which was riddled with trojans and viruses and formatting was the only route.

Reinstalled with windows XP (and service packs 1-3), reinstalled the drivers for sound, touch pad etc but can't get the wireless to work!

The card doesn't show up in device manager, which I've been led to believe means it needs a bios update. I read on a website that i needed to update to a version 2.4 or later, but one doesn't seem to exist for windows XP.

I'm struggling, and would like to get this done! Any suggestions please post or email. If you could point me in the way of the correct drivers/bios updates to get it working I would be very appreciative!

About 3 or 4 days ago I installed a new motherboard (Gigabyte MA785GMT-UD2H), processor (Athlon X2), RAM (4GB Crucial), HDD (so it's essentially a new PC). After installing XP Home and then gradually installing updates (SP3 is installed) and my usual assortment of programmes and utilities (nothing too out of the ordinary - iTunes, browsers, Office, spyware utilities, Security Essentials), my PC now has a number of glitchy problems whenever I boot it up at the beginning of the day. I can get past them by rebooting roughly 4-5 times; eventually it will run smoothly. I've kept notes of some of the most recurrent problems:

- Generic Win32 service closes on start-up. Result is frequently that when I try to open My Documents or My Computer, the taskbar and desktop icons disappear for a few seconds, then reappear. Often after a few attempts my desired folder will eventually open.

- AntiMalware Service Executable closes on start-up. Result is Security Essentials deciding it cannot update and thinks it's out of date.

- ATI Catalyst Control Centre (for the onboard GPU) closes on start-up. No noticeable effects.

- Google Chrome (my preferred browser) browser windows crash - i.e. I get the 'aw snap!' page, the whole thing doesn't close. This occurs even after disabling extensions, so they do not seem to be the cause.

...And less frequently, I have also had the following happen:

- On boot-up, a window pops up with: 'Procedure entry point Md5final could not be located in ... Read more

I'm having some major problems re-installing XP on my home computer (Compaq Presario, 512MB, 120GB harddrive, WinXP Home Edition, 2 years old). I get as far as rebooting into SAFE mode and the system hangs---it tells me that I cannot reboot into SAFE mode, and I am unable to get back to a normal XP reboot; it's like the computer is stuck in a SAFE mode reboot loop. When I press F8 and get to the point where I can select a different reboot option (normal XP, last successful reboot configuration, etc) none of the options work. I tried booting off the reboot floppy that came with the computer and I get a message "cannot access the drive, abort, retry or fail?".

I tried using the XP cd that came with my computer to repair the installed version of XP already on the computer, but the system keeps giving me an error message saying the "XP reinstall cannot operate in SAFE mode" and then provides an OK button (no other choices) and reboots, only to be faced with the same message all over again. Help! How can I get out of this permanent SAFE mode reboot????

I somehow managed to get to a DOS prompt and am able to see my C: drive, and can CD to the WINDOWS directory, but that's about all I can do. I can see the lisiting of other directories, but "Access Denied" when I try to change to them. The directories appear in a listing similar to this:

I recently built a new computer so it had no OS on it, and I decided to install the windows 7 RC to test it out. It worked great and the RC expired today.
So now I want to use the windows 7 "upgrade" package to install full windows 7 64-bit.

I understand that I must have a previous installation of windows in order to do this, so what I'm thinking is the following:
What if I were to use a windows install CD I got online to install the full windows XP 32-bit version, and then using my VALID genuine windows XP 32-bit product key from an old laptop I have. I would be fine with never using the laptop again (in fact it doesn't even have windows anymore) so there shouldn't be a problem with moving the product key to my new system right?
Then I would use that windows XP 32-bit to upgrade with the windows 7 "upgrade" package to Windows 7 64-bit
Obviously this would have to a full re-installation and not actually an "upgrade".

I've read that it IS possible to use the "upgrade" media to go from XP 32 to win 7 64.
What I am unsure of is moving the product key from my laptop to this system and then going from there.

Please offer advice.
Thanks.

You do not need to install XP to use it as qualifying OS for Win7 Upgrade version.

On a new HD, use this workaround: http://community.winsupersite.com/bl...he-answer.aspx

Or run a Repair install immediately after clean install which wll allow use of Upgrade version key.

More information, screenshots and options here: Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version

64 bit version will have no bearing on any of this. You can use either 32- or 64-bit with each license, your choice, one at a time.

I had Windows 8 Enterprise on another tablet and I wanted to install Windows 8 Pro on it.

I formatted the hard drive and used the 32-bit retail upgrade DVD. Why 32 bit? I already played with
the 64 bit on my other tablet so why not install the 32 bit on this one. BTW: Enterprise installed just fine
and was working great on this tablet.

So, like I said, I formatted the hard drive and then booted from the DVD. The installation seem to do fine except
for some small blip where during the setup phase it rebooted, came up with what looked like a SFC scan screen and was up only for a few seconds and said it was repairing something..flashed some stuff on the screen, the rebooted again. It was maybe 5 seconds long so it was hard to really see what it was saying. Looked like maybe it was cleaning up some temporary install files???

So, it booted up like the other 6 times I have installed Windows 8 on various other machines. Except this
time, it booted into the desktop. I waited a good 2 minutes and it stayed in the desktop. I could swipe the charms menu and bring up the Metro interface but it did not boot into it. I rebooted again and the same issue.

Also, it did not put in the CD-Key. This was an upgrade DVD. I tried the tutorial that is listed here

Well I got one problem solved only to run into another. I got the computer to run, went to the bios to check to make sure it read my new hard drive correctly and then let it go ahead and load Windows XP on to the new hard drive. As it was loading half the files didn't want to load and when it was restarted it came up with this error Stop: C0000221 unknown hard error\systemroot/system32/ntdll.dll on a blue screen. I can't get past this and have read about the possible causes of this error, but they don't seem to apply to me. The hard drive is new and so is the copy of Windows XP. I am not sure what steps to try and take now.

System specs to the best of my recollectation are:
AMD Athalon 2500, A Soyo Dragon Motherboard (don't know model, can't access and don't have paperwork), currently running 256 ram, just installed a Maxor Diamond Max Ata/100 harddrive, standard cd rom, Geforce video card(don't remember which one there either). That is about all I can tell you on it.

It is running 256 ram because apparently the Ram decided to give out this morning and that was the only stick I had.

Should I just wipe the new hd out and retry the install? A good number of files didn't want to install, and the disc is brand new and not a scratch on it.

Twice in the past I have attempted to download and install the latest beta version of IE 7 just to play around with it. Both times it displayed some kind of error explaining IE 7 install failed. Not that I care because I use and am very happy with Firefox. It appears that in the very near future Microsoft will push IE 7 on everyone via automatic updates. How can I avoid the installation headaches as I'm sure it won't work..?

Was there any error codes when the installation stopped?

Do your system specs meet the minimum requirements of the program?

Hi, I have a Dell Latitude CSx laptop pc. I runs 500 Mhz & was upgraded to 256 mb ram. It was currently running win 2000 and was running very good including the internet. I recently upgraded it to Win xp professional. It installed fine & the computer boots ok (kinda slow but same as 2000). Everything works ok but the problem I run into is on the internet. It seems to run slow & my speed slows down. I really don't have anything else running on the pc (incl spyware & virus protector). I've tried shutting turning of the firewall but it doesn't make any difference.

Is there anything I can do to speed up the internet or will I have to reinstall win 2000. I know the pc is kinda old but it worked fine with win 2000 & has 256mb.

Hi and Welcome to TSF

I strongly suggest you install an anti-virus program. AVG Free edition doesnt use up much resources and if the system is not patched with SP2 and critical updates you are setting yourself up for some issues. You are basically a magnet for infection.

256 is alittle shy for memory escpecially for XP Pro. I always suggest at least 512 or more. Considering your system is an older machine its going to be slow running XP Pro. As for the internet connection, I feel it will be a slow as the system it is running on.

Hello All,
I currently installed windows XP home on the following PC.

AMD Athlon XP 2800
1GB Ram
Nvidia 6600 LE
80GB HDD

I can install windows just fine. However during the installation process windows reboots for its second time. The windows Splash screen appears with the normal blue bar but at that screen it freezes. The Blue bar doesn't move and nothing else happens. I tried resetting. It happens again at the windows loading screen. When I tried to reinstall again it gets up to the part where you are at the Windows loading screen with blue bar and freezes again. It does this with different types of Ram, and any graphics card. ATI or Nividia of varying generations (6600, 9800 etc). I do not know what is causing this. Please help.

Thanks
RDGM
