A few problems after SURT (tried to install SP2)

Q: A few problems after SURT (tried to install SP2)

Hi,

I have tried to install SP2 on my Vista Home Premium 32 bit (Dutch). After evenings trying to fix some problems with FixIt and Readiness it's going better and better. But SP2 won't install yet. In my checksur.log there are a few problems, after more than 900 were repaired. Can someone help me to fix these problems so I can try to install SPV again?

Preferred Solution: A few problems after SURT (tried to install SP2)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello BasW and welcome to the forums

Yay, I've finally got a nice SURT log to play with Because you only have manifest files corrupted (not their matching .mum and .cat files), we can't trace them through an update. We're going to have to manually trace them through the registry. Please bear with me whilst I prepare instructions!

Dear Sevenforums,

I just installed a new HDD by WD into a HP DV7T (2008), everything has been going well up until I tried to Update Windows. I did not retain anything from the previous installation as the previous hard drive up and quit on me!

I activated windows and had it confirmed as genuine.

I followed the instructions posted on another page and tried to install SURT and got an error: 0xc8000247.

I was hoping for some suggestions, Direct X , Java, MSE and Mechwarrior Online wouldn't install.

Perhaps a driver issue?

Have a great day all!

Sincerely,
Noodle123

A:New HDD, Windows will not update, cannot install SURT error code below

This error is due to problems with the hard drive drivers.
First, open Device Manager, and click on View > Show hidden devices

Are any devices showing with yellow triangles or red crosses?
If so, Uninstall them, then reboot and see if that cures the problem.

if not...

This may simply be caused by a bad set of Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers -

Hello, I recently replaced a defective HDD in my laptop with a new WD Black 750G HDD, re-installed my Windows 7 image using my recovery DVDs, but can't seem to update Windows OR start Windows Defender (error 0x8e5e0247). I followed the steps from "Windows Update Posting Instructions" and am listing the results:-

1. System Update Readiness Tool installation resulted in error:0xc8000247.

2. Also performed SFC Scan three separate times and received the same "WRP found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them." (see attached CBS)

When I manually try to install updates, I get "Windows Update cannot check for updates because the service is not running. Restart your computer." But if look in local services (Task Manager) Windows Update is started & running.

Any help in resolving this issue would be greatly appreciated.
PS: There were some programs included in the restore, Norton AV being one of them. I uninstalled it, then downloaded the Norton Removal Tool & ran that as well. I'm mentioning this because it was recommended several times in other threads regarding this same error.

I am going to ask a quick question while SURT is running on my laptop. I am very vulnerable on that pc as the updates have not updated since reinstall of win7 sp1 yesterday. Can I turn off my internet connection while that program is running? Thank you.

A:Running SURT for update problems-Compaq C62 laptop

Since no one has offered any advice, I just kept truckin'. I downloaded and I ran the SURT package. I have been at all of this since 11 this morning and succeeded in downloading 148 windows security updates. I was told after reinstalling sp1 there would be around 200 but the windows update menu indicated that 68 were "recommended" not important. That would bring the number to 196. I think I will just not worry about those 68 as they are not "important". Hope I am back in safe territory.

Because my satellite internet will take ages (like 80 hours or something) to download SURT, would I be able to download it onto a USB (via WIFI from my town's library, onto my laptop) and then install/run it on my home desktop computer?

Please forgive if this is a stupid question

A:can I run SURT from a USB stick?

You can - but I'd advise copying it to the desktop and running that copy, unless it's USB3, as it's a very large file.

I installed(Run instead of Save) SURT from a link posted by Brink but I cannot locate where it was filed.

A:Installed SURT...where is it?

Selecting Run puts the file in the Temporary Internet Files area.

Once the SURT has run, that is it. It has done all that it is going to do. There is no start menu entry and there is no user interface.

For the last two months I have been having to reinstall the same win updates over & over?-
Now its the Windows Malicious Software Removal tool that keeps coming up, and as soon as I install it
the updt icon immediately pops up saying updates are ready for your computer (over & over)?

I tried to download the Win7 32-bit SURT tool from your forum link, but it says it's Not available?

A:Can't download SURT tool to fix...?

The most likely reason for the MSRT to repeat is that it crashed at some point.
The most likely reason for that, is that the machine is infected.
Try this link for the CheckSUR tool...

Download System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 (KB947821) [October 2014] from Official Microsoft Download Center

(direct link - 32-bit Windows 7CheckSUR)

Also...

Please download and install Malwarebytes Anti-malware (free version) from http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free/ - UNtick 'Enable free trial of MBAM Premium' at the end of the installation - and update it, then run a full scan in your main account, and Quick scans in any other user accounts.

I'm trying to follow the posting guidelines before I post my Windows update problem but don't know which SURT file to download, could someone please help?

My computer properties are :

64-bit Operating System

(I have not been able to succesfully download/install Service Pack 1, which is the problem I will eventually ask about, and every option I see for SURT has an SP, which I don't have at all.)

ETA - Sorry guys, just saw I wasn't reading things properly.

For the SURT you need to d/l this file: x64-based (64-bit) versions of Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 7

The pc is definitely backleveled since I had to restore. It has all updates up to 7/12. While I have had any problems with updates (so far) I thought that it might be wise to install the SURT. My only concern is whether that would create problems with updates since I am so far behind.

thanks

(I could not find an answer for this question which may well be a dumb question.)

A:SURT WIN7 64bit

It only corrects any problems it finds - it doesn't install anything new.

Unless you're seeing problems with updating or the like, then there should be no need to run the tool.

taking the two issues people have come back to me with

SURT

The SURT has not fixed the problem; the same 4 updates fail as before i.e. :
- Definition Update for Microsoft Office 2010 (KB982726) 32-Bit Edition,
- Security Update for Microsoft Outlook 2010 (KB2837597) 32-Bit Edition
- Update for Microsoft Office 2010 (KB2589352) 32-Bit Edition
- Update for Microsoft Office 2010 (KB2597087) 32-Bit Edition

Log files don't mean a lot to me. But here goes for anyone who can interpret. Attached are the simple log files in plain and CBS zips after the SURT run - before and after failed software update

IE11 and YouTube: Someone asked for a better description of the problem. Best done with an example: If I open YouTube and attempt to type a search string e.g. Joe Bloggs, it locks up with a YouTube failing to respond pop-up at the bottom. On the other hand, if I type a search string into Google e.g. Joe Bloggs on YouTube, then I can click any of the links and YouTube runs perfectly, and more to the point, will accept any new search string.

In the mean time, I'll go look for updates after next Patch Tues/Wed so I can shut my machines down sensibly

A:Wrap up to the SURT suggestion (and IE11)

SURT found nothing wrong - and the CBS logs contain no useful data.

Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested data

I understand that this SURT is supposed to resolve the eternal "searching for updates" so I would be extremely please if someone could tell me where this marvel can be found
Thanks a lot for your time

A:where can I find SURT tool to kick w7 updates

I don't know about SURT but the following will resolve the Windows update problem.

Follow these instructions exactly.
First, set Windows Updates to never check for Updates.
Next reboot your computer, then install KB3020369, if not installed.
Then install KB3172605.

Windows updates should return to normal. You can then reset your updates to automatically check for updates if desired

good evening, I have tried following your instructions to post information regarding the error, but surt fails to execute the hotfix.
For the past month, I kept getting disconnected from my wifi, it would stop working, and could not run the troubleshooter either.
I ran windows updater, it did update some files, but failed with 3 having to do with microsoft net framework.
I play FSX and P3D, today I tried upgrading my P3D to a new version and it failed as well, never happened before.
since I could not run surt, can you please guide me thru what steps I can take, this is driving me crazy and those games are what keeps my brain distracted from thinking about a bladder tumor.
I am enclosing the error logs as well.
Thanks.

Looking down this list of current update failures,

one might be excused for thinking Microsoft has a serious problem which started a couple of days back.

I have spent the last two days trying to re- install failed up dates.

About twelve in all and only relative to two error codes (800F08260) for most of them, then an odd

two with (80070490). First I tried finding a restore point prior to everything going wrong. Windows was

less than appreciative of that and the restore failed. I tried updating single updates manually but no go,

they still failed. Two days back I put in new antivirus and firewall and I wondered if that was the problem,

so I disabled and went back to Defender and Windows firewall. Nope, that made no difference.

So I logged on here, took note of "Windows update posting instructions"

and worked my way down to the SURT program. I attempted to install the version for Win 7 64 bit

and initially it looked good and was installing (9KB947821) (which I was surprised to see was a Hot Fix? )

when it hung. I left it for a while but it just was stuck there, so I killed it with task manager and

downloaded a new version then installed it. It also reached the same point then hung.

If I go look at the update history it shows a failure for (KB947821) but then a success!

I suppose I should think myself lucky but, what I would like to know is, If I instigate Windows Updates

now. will they all work? In other words, was that hot fix the thing needed to... Read more

A:Problem with SURT hanging when downloading (KB947821)

For everyone's info, the re-run of ten windows updates, failed when 35% into the re-boot.

Please help me in solving a windows update failure. I have windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64.

The two windows updates that fail are
System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 (KB947821)
any Microsoft.NET framework both 4.5.2 (KB2901983) and 4.6.1 (KB3102433)

I found a similar thread and followed the steps in it, but no joy.
Performed SFC /scannow, but the WRP did not find any integrity violations. I tried to run the SURT tool (same tool as KB947821) by a manual download and run but it reports the "hotfix failed to install". So I don't have a SURT tool log to submit.

What's the next step?

I'm having a weird problem for the past few days. On my laptop, I can surf to most websites, but can't sign into hotmail and yahoo mail ... I get a 'Page cannot be displayed' error after I enter my username and password.

However, I have a desktop as well ... and at the same time that my laptop browser gives an error, I can logon to the same websites from my desktop without an issue.

I've also have experienced a similar problem logging onto eBay, mapquest etc … and I had the same problem right now while posting this message! My laptop gave a ‘page cannot be displayed’ error when I clicked on ‘preview post’ … so I had to post this from my desktop.

This problem has been haunting me for several days on just these few websites, so its not a case of a server being temporarily down.

The laptop has WinXP, and the browser is IE ver
6.0.2800.1106.xpsp2.030422-1633
The desktop has Win98, and the broswer is IE ver 6.0.2800.1106

I had uninstalled JRE from my laptop earlier this week; and I wondered whether that was causing this problem. But the problem persists even after I reinstalled 'Java 2 Runtime Environment Standard Edition v1.3.1_02'.

Please help!

How's that for a Topic?

I first noticed the problem while trying to install QuickBooks.
It complained about the .NET framework.
When I went to Add/Remove Windows components, it was blank.
I googled and studied more.
I tried SFC /scan now. "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation."
Notice Application log is full of 1001 - Windows Error reporting with the following:

Hi all-

This is my first post so hopefully I'm doing it correctly.

I've been having issues with my Windows update service not checking for updates since it says the service isn't running. I have tried various other fixes that I've seen in other threads such as running Malwarebyte and FSS. When running those tools, no issues were found.

I downloaded SURT, and while the installation will initialize, it stops and gives me a 0xc8000247 error.

I ran sfc /scannow and have attached the log file below.

I have also enclosed the CBS logs as requested.

I am running Windows 7 Professional (64-bit) and have SP1 installed. Please advise if there is any additional information that you need. If it matters, the computer in question is an HP Pavilion DV8.

Thank you,

Tom

Windows Update spins forever on "checking for updatse". The Win Update Troubleshooter gives error 0x8024402C. I have tried numerous fixes including some KBs - no success.

Today I tried steps 1 and 2 that you recommend should be run before posting on this problem.

1. The SURT installer has been spinning > 3 hrs on "searching for updates on this computer".

2. I ran "sfc /scannow". It says "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them" and refers to CBS.log - but that is an empty file.

Can anyone advise me?

About 3 or 4 days ago I installed a new motherboard (Gigabyte MA785GMT-UD2H), processor (Athlon X2), RAM (4GB Crucial), HDD (so it's essentially a new PC). After installing XP Home and then gradually installing updates (SP3 is installed) and my usual assortment of programmes and utilities (nothing too out of the ordinary - iTunes, browsers, Office, spyware utilities, Security Essentials), my PC now has a number of glitchy problems whenever I boot it up at the beginning of the day. I can get past them by rebooting roughly 4-5 times; eventually it will run smoothly. I've kept notes of some of the most recurrent problems:

- Generic Win32 service closes on start-up. Result is frequently that when I try to open My Documents or My Computer, the taskbar and desktop icons disappear for a few seconds, then reappear. Often after a few attempts my desired folder will eventually open.

- AntiMalware Service Executable closes on start-up. Result is Security Essentials deciding it cannot update and thinks it's out of date.

- ATI Catalyst Control Centre (for the onboard GPU) closes on start-up. No noticeable effects.

- Google Chrome (my preferred browser) browser windows crash - i.e. I get the 'aw snap!' page, the whole thing doesn't close. This occurs even after disabling extensions, so they do not seem to be the cause.

...And less frequently, I have also had the following happen:

- On boot-up, a window pops up with: 'Procedure entry point Md5final could not be located in ... Read more

I'm fixing a friends laptop - an ancient Toshiba Equium A110-252 (PSAB2E) which was riddled with trojans and viruses and formatting was the only route.

Reinstalled with windows XP (and service packs 1-3), reinstalled the drivers for sound, touch pad etc but can't get the wireless to work!

The card doesn't show up in device manager, which I've been led to believe means it needs a bios update. I read on a website that i needed to update to a version 2.4 or later, but one doesn't seem to exist for windows XP.

I'm struggling, and would like to get this done! Any suggestions please post or email. If you could point me in the way of the correct drivers/bios updates to get it working I would be very appreciative!

The Blue bar doesn't move and nothing else happens. I tried resetting. It happens again at the windows loading screen. When I tried to reinstall again it gets up to the part where you are at the Windows loading screen with blue bar and freezes again. It does this with different types of Ram, and any graphics card. ATI or Nividia of varying generations (6600, 9800 etc). I do not know what is causing this. Please help.

I want to upgrade to a new, faster, CD rom drive. My current cd rom drive is set with jumpers to slave. This cd rom works fine. I thought I could just pop the old one out, plug in everything the same on my new one, and it would work just fine. It didn't. First, I removed my old cd rom and plugged in my new one but had the jumper set to master as per the instructions in the owners manual. Well the first thing I got was a blue screen. I shut off computer, Window 98SE started to boot, and it couldn't detect my hard drive so it aborted the boot up. I then set the jumpers to slave (like my old one) and Windows would not detect the CD rom drive. It wasn't listed in device manager, nor in my computer. Even though it wasn't detected, I could open and close the tray so I know it's getting power. I did not use the jumper setting for CS but maybe that's a possability. I did re-install my old cd rom drive and it still works just fine. Is it possible this new cd rom drive is defective? Should I return it for a new one and try again? Is there something else I can try to get this new one to work? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My system: AMD K62, 450mhz, 6 gig hd, 128mb ram, Windows 98SE

A:cd-rom install problems

Try this! Put the new one back in as slave (make sure your red stripe on the cable is oriented to pin 1) reboot to Windows and go to COntrol Panel > System. Go to the device manager tab and click the + next to CD-ROM, select the CD-ROM listed below and hit the Delete key or Remove button. Restart the computer and see if the new drive is detected when Windoze restarts. If it's not detected, post the contents of your config.sys and autoexec.bat files.

I found a solution for my problem. Thought I should post about it - can come handy for some of you nice guys:

I thought i should try creating a new windows account with administrative rights. Done so. Rebooted and chose that recently created account. Windows spent a lot of time working as if it was installing a lot of components. about 10 minutes or so. What it did i dont know, but whatever it was it was very well done. Reinstalled the drivers that would not work and for my surprise everything went as smooth as my sons little but. Even when I log with my old account everything is swell.

Morals of the story - when your drivers fail to install, try to create a new user with administrative rights, then install your driver under that account. It worked for me

Best Regards for all you nice guys

Ok So I just found a "custom" version of windows xp pro 64 bit that somebody put together. They preinstalled things like firefox and did alot of registry edits to get rid of common annoyances...ect. BUT there's a few things I've had to fix that he messed with.

1. One problem I can't seem to fix (and I've had it before in the past) is my keyboard's (Logitech G15) volume wheel and mute button doesn't do anything. I've installed all the correct drivers and software multiple times from multiple locations across the net, nothing seems to help. I also have Logitech Z10 speakers that have a volume control which don't do anything either. Both worked on Vista but going back to XP, they stopped working again...

2. The second problem I can't seem to fix is an odd one. I know there's nothing wrong with the keys on my keyboard but when I hold shift and press " key nothing happens, but it seems to effect the next button I press as if it's a shortcut used for extra icons n stuff. If I hold shift and press " then hit e after it I get an ë. Also same with ä otherwise like if I hit space afterwords it just puts a " but it's annoying having to hit another key just to get a quote. What do you think causes that and how can I fix it??? I checked and rechecked my regional language...ect settings but it seems correct from what I see.

I think it is because you are using 32bit drivers with a 64bit system. Windows XP 64bit is well known for driver issues and bad stability. I suggest using a 32bit version of Windows XP.

I'm trying to re-install XP Professional on my custom built PC and I'm running into problems. While the instillation is "copying files" to the hard drive after I've formatted the partition it has trouble copying some files, but once I tell it to retry it finds them right away. Then the real problem , I keep getting one of those blue screen stop-error messages which abruptly ends the install process. The stop-errors don't always occur at the same spot during the copying but it always happens.
Anyone ever had this problem or have a clue what could be wrong?

Delete your current partition and create a new NTFS partition and then proceed to install WinXP. Do you know what the errror message is with the blue screen?

Also, try cleaning your disc. Maybe it's dirty.

I re-installed Win XP sp2 on a machine and have setup errors. I have never encountered this problem before. I work for a school district so I have re-installed numerous times. This one has me stumped.

I reformatted the hard drive with the long format option.
I installed Win XP Pro sp2.
Installed Office 2003, Endpoint protection, VideoLan, Google Earth and a typing program.
Installed all the Windows and Microsoft updates that were required and then some including Win XP sp3.
My ADD AND REMOVE programs is blank. All other buttons work on the left side of the screen function.
There are entries in the registry key under the UNINSTALL
Tried to run JET4.0 to correct the dll that are missing. The message I received was that my versions were newer than what was trying to update.

Errors all read much the same for various dll files.

Error: Setup could not register the OLE control c:\windows\system32\mshtml.dll because of the following error:
Load Library returned error 126 (the specified module could not be found).

This is only one of the 15 dll files with this error.

One other error type is the following:
Error: Setup could not register the OLE Control C:\windows\system32\swprv.dll because of the following error:
DllInstall returned error 2147549183 (8000ffff).

Any help or ideas would make my day! Thanks in advance.

Hi .First thought...hard drive.Second thought...PSU.Third thought...CMOS battery.Any of the above can, IME, produce flaky rsults on a system.I would run the appropriate manufacturer's diagnostic on the hard drive, as a first step.Bootable Hard Drive Diagnostics - Vox - http://usasma.vox.com/library/post/bootabl...iagnostics.html What prompted the reinstall effort?Louis

I am running xp pro on a 32 bit system and I did a clean reinstall with a full format.
But now when I try and install a program I get a popup saying " Please go to the control panel to install and configure system components"

I searched and found a setup.exe in system 32 and deleted it, but the popup still persists, any ideas on how to fix this.
if it means a new install I will do it.

When I installed Windows XP Professional, the setup went kind of haywire. So I started the install again. This time it installed fine with no problems. Now when I boot the system, it shows two (2) boot options….each one is Windows XP Professional. I need to select the second one because this is the good install. The first one is the bad setup. My question; is there a way to delete this first (bad) option, without reinstalling XP again? If so, what is the procedure? TIA.

Grettings, all. Please forgive me if this topic has been addressed in the past.

Just built a new Shuttle PC with a 160GB Deskstar SATA drive. Install of XP Pro w/sp2 started fine, but when Windows prompted for the CD Key, I realized that it was nowhere to be found. So I replaced the CD with a Volume Licensing XP Pro w/sp1 CD that I do have the CD Key for, and promptly rebooted. After reboot, Windows installation continued until I was prompted for the SP2 disc so it could find an "asms" file. I burned a copy of SP2, but it didn't work. So, I found an article in MS Knowledge Base about a regedit for a workaround. Followed those instructions and rebooted. Now, I can't get into the BIOS at all, and all rebooting does is lock on the splash screen before the POST. Tried switching SATA channels, but to no avail. Tried using a Linux Live CD, but the only way I can get into the BIOS is by disconnecting the SATA drive. I'm stumped. Any ideas? BTW, there is no floppy on this machine.

Sorry about the long post, but I know this is a great place for answers and I figured I'd try to be specific as possible. Thanks in advance.

Maybe you have the drive jumpers set incorrectly.

You should check the web site for the brand of drive you have, such as: http://www.wdc.com/en/library/eide/2579-001037.pdf
