Distorted audio and then no audio at al

Q: Distorted audio and then no audio at al

Since I formatted my notebook which I bought not long ago. The audio is distorted after 40 mins of watching a film and then after a few minutes of being distorted, audio goes completely. I have tried restarting but it keeps on happening over and over again. I have also updated the audio drivers but that doesn't fix the problem. I would also know how I can get in touch with someone to help as I work from Monday to Friday and I am back from work at almost 7pm. My product is still under guarrantee. Thank you very much for your help Sandra

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I've been having trouble getting clear audio consistently with my new headset on my laptop which is currently running Windows 7. I have tried reinstalling the driver, restarting my laptop, combinations of restarting and reinstalling driver, replacing the headset (before I realised it was a computer problem), even flashed the BIOS to see if that would help, also tried using different USB ports, nothing has fixed it and if it does it lasts 5 minutes before it starts to crackle and sound quality degrades again. I cannot think of anything else that I can do to fix this. I have looked for a fix on Logitech's website which directed me to Microsoft but none of the solutions posted has fixed the problem. Headset works perfect on boyfriends computer, also running Windows 7, and my boyfriends headset (same as mine) has the same problem when plugged in to my laptop. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi all, hope someone can help!

My laptop has suddenly started to have audio problems. All audio (not just music, all windows sounds) are crackling, scratchy and very slow (kind of like playing a record backwards).

So far I have made sure there are no viruses on the system (everything is clear). and checked that all sound drivers are up to date. At a loss as to what to do next. Any ideas?

My laptop is a Toshiba A-series (pretty old). I'm using Windows XP, SP3.

I got a new computer about a week ago and about 2 days after I set it up, the audio became distorted sometimes. It seems to happen only once a day when I first turn my computer on. When I restart it the sound is crystal clear and won't happen again for the rest of the night.

Here are my sound card specifications

Please help because I would like to know if it is a hardware issue or if it is just a driver problem so that I can send it back for a new one if the motherboard is bad.

Do a system restore to day 1, to see if something you've loaded is causing the problem.

If not, take it back, and get a note made of the problem WITH their acknowledgment.

Hey everybody
Earlier this month, I had my computer repaired and cleaned of a nasty malware virus

Both before and after the repairs, when I listen to audio on my computer, it tends to distort at random times, sometimes worse than others, and it's getting very annoying

I know it's not my speakers, because it does this when I plug my headphones into my laptop as well
Thus, I don't believe it's my headphones either, so what could it be?

Whatever the answer might be, laymans' terms would be greatly appreciated

It seems like after i did windows security updates for SP1 my audio got distorted, so i did a system restore, same problem. So i upgraded to SP2 hoping it will fix it. Called Dell several times, at the same time i was thinking the lightning damaged my sound card. So i removed soundblaster creative live and installed a new sound card (Soundblaster Audigy) and still same problem. So i uninstalled Audigy and put back my old one.

When i start the pc, the windows welcome wav sound sounds fine but after the pc is all booted up, the audio is distorted (sounds like chirping) no matter what i'm using, cd's, windows sounds, everything I try.
Dell has no idea whats wrong, so i'm hoping someone can help me. Device manager shows no conflicts.
Thank you.

I have a very peculiar problem with the audio on my computer.

First of all; some background.

I've never had any problems with my audio before, and usually when I get a problem with my computer I've been able to fix it, but this one seems to elude me. I use my computer for making music (as a hobby), primarily in Reason 4. I recently borrowed a sound card (an old Sound Blaster Live!) from a friend to be able to plug in my midi keyboard for use in Reason.

I used the sound card only for the midi keyboard, and had my headphones plugged into the on-board audio (Realtek AC97). Immediately after plugging in the new sound card i noticed how low-frequency bassy sounds would get distorted in Reason (and ONLY in Reason, listening to music would work fine without any distortion whatsoever), and this annoyed me beyond imagination.

The next time i booted my computer, it alerted me that it had found an audio device in the high definition audio bus that needed to be installed. I thought it had something to do with the new sound card, but it later turned out to be the HDMI audio driver for my ATI graphics card that had gone missing (strange?). I reinstalled it, but that didn't seem to fix my problem.

Now, the sound distortion seems to have spread, and all sounds get distorted if the volume is high or if it's a low-frequency tone. If i listen to music the bass starts making a really fuzzy noise. I have basically tried everything to fix this problem, tested my headphon... Read more

I've been experiencing this issue ever since I received my XPS 13. It was rarely happening at first, but lately I've been hearing it more and more while watching youtube or listening to music. It is really getting annoying, to the point that I can't even listen to music on my laptop. If I try to use headphones it doesn't help either. I've had this laptop since September 30th of this year.
I've recorded this issue on my cell phone and posted it on the following link:
Can this possibly be fixed with a driver update or is it the hardware that's not functioning properly?
Please help!

Hi, i am having a problem with playing audio on my computer. Whenever i play any audio it is played slightly crackly with lots of beeping etc. I use Cubase SX3 and one day the CPU meter (in cubase) started going mental, flitting from nought to 90 percent etc. when i try and play a song, it plays it with a hell of a lot of beeping and lagging (sounds like a robot dying!). I am fairly certain that it is not a problem with cubase, as this is happening also with windows media player, just not as heavily (as in, it is almost bearable to listen to). I thought this might be to do with the CPU, but in task manager everything looks fine.

I am using Windows XP home edition

Please help, I need to use cubase for my work, and it is basically impossible to compose anything like this!

By the way, i'm no einstein when it comes to computers, and i wouldn't be surprised if this problem is a culmination of me trying to fix problems and just making them worse.

Thanks, Hugo

Hi, im having a frustating problem with audio when playing certain video on a new pc i've built. Specifically, the problem whenever it occurs, is that the audio is EXTREMELY loud and distorted and makes watching the relevant vid pointless; but as i said its with certain vids only. (Music files are fine).

To clarify:
- A video file saved on the harddrive with a proper file extension (mpg, avi, mov, wmv) will play fine using any media player.
- A video file saved on the harddrive with a non-standard-video file extension (eg iso) played in VLC will sound distorted.
- Any type of streaming video from the net (such as the vids on ebaums) will sound distorted.

So, ive tried a number of things to sort this out with no joy. I simply thought it was a codec issue and proceeded to download k-lite codec pack, wmv9 codecs from MS, sherlock, ffdshow, etc, and tried installing/updating/removing with all of these to no avail. Now, Im unsure whether its a codec issue but im pretty certain its software related.

Just to note my OS is WinXP Pro sp2 and any time i try to remedy this problem its from a fresh acronis image saved prior to any codecs or anything being installed.

If anybody has any tips/advice on how i can troubleshoot this it would be MUCH appreciated.

this is my mother's computer, so bear with me if i leave out any pertinent symptoms, as i'm going from my limited encounter w/ the problem and she's not much help describing hers.

so, everytime any streaming is happening, (real media or quicktime), a bizarre distortion occurs. Not always right from the beginning of the file, but sometimes it will play normally for a bit then kick into "annoying, garbled mode".

I'm not very adept with describing sounds, so i'm not sure if it is actually distortioin. but the audio is "tinny" and kind of "garbled", but still recognizable.
it's exactly like too much n2o at the dentist , (or your buddy's basement).

is this possibly an IRQ conflict? or something to do with the OS?
I recently gave my mother my old motherboard (onboard audio) and she then bought a new case, hard drive, whole shebang really, and had it assembled. So this leads me to believe that there is a problem with the configuration of onboard audio drivers or some such.

when i run the device manager hardware checks, it says that everything is funtioning properly.

what else, oh, yeah, sys specs. Here goes:

Not sure if this is the right forum or not, but when using iTunes to play music, sometimes my computer will suddenly get very slow and the song I'm playing will start sounding all wacky, suddenly as if in slow motion, just sounds very strange. It last maybe a second or 2. I tried a little test where I watched the CPU Usage % meter, and it shot all the way up from maybe 50% to 100% whenever the audio slows down like that.

I recently defragged my hard drive, have checked for spyware/viruses, have about 3.2 gigs free on my HD, which is plenty of room for the swap file.

My computer is a Dell laptop 1.1ghz with 256 MB of RAM. So it's not blazing fast, but should be fast enough to run iTunes with no problem. And yes, I have tried to not have 20 billion windows open on the screen. And I don't have a ridiculous amount of programs running in the background or anything Any other ideas?

I've recently noticed that the sound coming through my speakers is heavily distorted and crackly. It's not the speakers themselves; they have been tested. I thought that the port might be loose, but it happens with anything plugged into the front jack as well. The Audio Troubleshooter from Microsoft claims no issues; I have attempted to uninstall and then reinstall the latest Realtek HD Audio drivers, and seen no improvements. I'm at a loss as to what else it could be.

This can be a frustrating problem to find a solution. I once had the problem with an old Creative sound card and a driver update resolved it. That was the easy solution. The harder diagnosis is with interference. You may have interference coming into your system from elsewhere, or it may be internal or coming from the motherboard itself. You can look at the problems others have had at this link to see how some found it frustrating to diagnose and solve.

I would first try removing possible sources of interference. What other devices do you have connected to the power strip the computer is plugged into? If you have a phone, printer, or scanner plugged into the same power strip, plug them into another strip or a different circuit altogether in your home. You also may try shutting down the system and making certain all internal cards and wires are firmly connected. Over time some things can work themselves loose somewhat especially if you've recently moved the system for any reason.

Hope this helps lead you to an idea that will resolve the problem. Good luck.

First of all, this is my first time visiting and posting in these forums, so if I'm breaking any rules or posting in the wrong section, I'm sorry. Also, I have searched extensively for every solution before hand, through the quicktime readme, literally hours on the web looking through FAQs, and checking to make sure I'm fully updated. I even just searched through this very forum, and still did not find the answer to my problem.

My problem is primarily with Quicktime, or more specifically, the audio aspect of Quicktime. Whenever I run a Quicktime movie, I get the usual good video quality; however, the audio is strange. It sounds as if one speaker is about a third of a second behind the other speaker, but both speakers are doing it. Essentially, it sounds like my speakers are in an echo chamber (and I assure you, they are not ). As stated before, I could not find a single reference to such a problem on the readme, FAQ, web, or even this forum, so if the answer is blindingly simple please don't hold that against me .

This is a relatively new computer I have, and the only major changes I have made to it since getting it are downloading the windows XP service pack 2 and Windows Media Player 10. I unfortunately cannot remember if quicktime worked or not before those installations.

What I have tried doing already is switching the sound control all to one speaker, but as stated before that does not solve the problem. I have also un-installed and re-installed q... Read more

Hello all!

I've just upgraded to Windows 10, and despite all the cool and fun stuff I got with the upgrade, I am quite disappointed that I cannot use my headphones on the notebook. The speakers function properly, but my headphones are producing an awkward sound. I will try to describe what I hear, based on the audio coming from "Pull me Under" - Dream Theater - - YouTube :
- Audio is distorted
- There is that "low-quality mp3" kind of effect
- I can hear noise instead of high-frequency sounds (like cymbals, for example)
- The singer's voice is distant, quieter than expected, and like it was singing from behind a shower, with a lot of echo
- Seems there is no stereo, or just a very narrow stereo field. I used the windows test beeps from sound devices and Stereo and Bass Test (HD) - YouTube to try that out and both seem to lack a good stereo field. One can barely notice a difference between left and right.

My notebook has Via HD Audio, and I have tried uninstalling and installing the drivers several times! Also, that tip of turning off enhancements doesn't mean a thing to this issue. It will keep regardless of effects.

I am still investigating, but this issue seems to happen in every sound source, be it Chrome, Groove, windows' own sounds and my games too. As already stated, the speakers do not produce this issue. Also, I am curious as why I have a separate output for headphone and speakers. I always need to change between them when I unplug/plug my head... Read more

Hi i just bought a new pc at best buy a few weeks ago. I noticed right away that there is problem where the pc will freeze and if there is audio playing at the time it will go all robotic and digital like as well. This results in loss of control of mouse and keyboard leaving no option but to reboot. Normally i would think this is a gpu problem since it happens while gaming and watching videos. I then purchased a nvidia gtx 560 ti and assumed the problem would be fixed and unfortunately it was not fixed and am still occasionally experiencing the problem(only happens once in a while). I then upgraded power supply from 250 to 750 watts and still jhaving same problem. I suspect this is a cpu problem, i really dont feeel like going through the trouble of taking it in to best buy unless i absolutely have to. i dont think it is the gpu since problem persisted with two seperate gpu's. here are my pc specs

The audio on my HP Envy makes what sounds like a death rattle.  This started about a month ago and I have performed 2 system restores, a system refresh, download new audio drivers, restore old drivers, uninstall new drivers. The speaker plays static when the system is muted.  Once you begin playing actualy audio, within 15 seconds the static will fade out, only to return when you change applications, or plug in a usb, hdmi port.  Of course this happens within 30 days of the warrenty expiring.  (good timing for sure!)

Hi all
I am playing DXD (352.8kHz FLAC) files to a USB DAC and I am getting intermittent severe distortion which to me sounds like a USB transmission issue caused by DPC latency. My configuration is as follows:
- Win 10 Pro- jRiver MC21- Chord Mojo connected over USB using Chord ASIO driver 1.05- alternatively AudioQuest Dragonfly 2 (downsampling samplerate to 88.2kHz)
I am getting the distortion with both DACs, which would suggest a problem with the XPS 13 HW or SW. I have disabled "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" for Intel USB3 eXtensible Host Controller and for the USB Root Hub (xHCI), but that did not solve the issue.
Power Plan is set to high performance, Under advanced settings I have set USB selective suspend setting to disabled.
DPC latency check and Latency Mon do not show any issue and list the PC as being capable of streaming real time audio.
The problem goes away if I chose the direct sound driver in jRiver. It occurs identically if I chose the ASIO, WASAPI and Kernel streaming drivers.
The problem does not occur on an HP zbook 15u.
Does anyone else have a similar problem and has anyone solved it?

Hi everyone,
Lately my computer has been distorting sounds and been going slower than it used to. When I restart the computer, the amount of distortions/small sizzling sounds is at a minimum, but it increases as I continue to use the computer. I googled how to fix this and one of the suggestions was to run a system file checker. The result of the scan was that I have some corrupted files that the computer could not remove. However, after doing the command Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth and then doing sfc /scannow, it appears the corrupt files have been repaired or eliminated. The problem of the distortions and slower computer still exists. I have attached the sfcdetails.txt file from the sfc scan with the corrupt files and a screen shot of the SFC results right from the command prompt. Thanks in advance to everyone who responds.

A:Audio Distorted in Google Chrome :

First of all - welcome to BC !
Does this only happen in Chrome or does it happen as well in Firefox or Internet Explorer (IE) as well ?
If it only happens in Chrome, then uninstall Chrome and re-install it. If it happens in other browsers then it is either an internet problem or a sound card problem.
To check if it is a sound card problem, play from a different source - a CD if you have a CD player in this computer or a music file from a USB memory stick, MP3 or WAV it does not matter. If the sound is now good then you will need to check the internet connection. If the sound is still bad it is either a sound card problem or a loud speaker problem. Check the connections and either try different speakers or connect these speakers to a different computer. You will now know if it is the speakers or the sound card.
The simplest way to check the internet connection is with another computer whose sound is known to be good. If you do not have another computer, invite a friend with a laptop to visit and connect the laptop to your internet the same way you do. Wireless if that is what you use, ethernet if you use that.
If the sound on your friend's laptop, or your other computer, is good then the problem is with the internet connection at your old family computer. Check the connections at your computer and, if that does not make an improvement consider replacing the wireless or ethernet card.
If the sound on the second computer is as bad as it ... Read more

Hey guys, as the title suggests i often get distorted/crackling audio through my headset/speakers, and have had this problem for a very long time. I have tried numerous suggestions to fix this issue, but it seems they have all had no effect This distortion/carackling is becoming a real nusance, and appears to hit the performance of my computer fairly drasticly at times. I'd appreciate any suggestions that may finally deal with this stubborn issue at last. I have attatched some of the results from the DPC latency scanner to hopefully help find the root of this problem.

thanks in advance- Kevin fitz

I've done searches everywhere and can't seem to find an answer to this problem...

When I stream audio from the Internet, it is distorted/garbled. It almost sounds like the old days of a dirty tape drive. Playing audio CD's is fine, and playing audio files stored on the computer is fine... streaming is the only problem. Occurs with Real Player 10.5 and Windows Media Player 11.

Machine is an older Dell 8100 running WinXP/sp2. The sound card is a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz with the latest audio drivers (4193). I've uninstalled and reinstalled the card and drivers. Everything was working fine until sometime last week. In fact, this machine has had great audio for years, including streamed audio.

I've played with virtually every audio setting on the machine to no avail.

Any thoughts?

It seems a lot of people have been having this problem, as i've read multiple forum posts on this exact issue for this exact laptop. However, after browsing through these forum posts, i have not been able to figure out a solution to this problem. I love this laptop, however the audio is completely distorted and compressed and terrible. I've tried playing music through Itunes, Youtube, etc. and the problem is apparent no matter what i'm listening to. What i've gathered from reading other posts is that there is some Limiter embedded in the audio driver that you can not get rid of. I'd hate to have to return this computer to Best Buy, but i simply cannot deal with this. I've been able to make the problem go away using the Microsoft troubleshooter temporarily,  I think what it's doing is switching to a different audio driver. That solves it temporarily, but as soon as i stop playing sound and leave my computer for roughly 2-3 minutes, the problem comes back. I need a permanent bulletproof solution so i can completely remove this situation from my mind, or the laptop is going back to the store. It's ludicrous and immensely frustrating that Windows and/or HP feels the need to embed a filter into their audio driver.

Hi: I have no idea if this will work or not, but the HP Probook 450 G3 also has the conexant HD audio system, and I haven't heard any reports of lousy audio quality. It appears there is a totally different driver for that model's conexant audio. This package contains the driver that enables the Conexant High-Definition (HD) Audio in supported notebook models that are running a supported operating system. 10.0.931.79 Rev.Q http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp77001-77500/sp77176.exe I don't know if you want to give that driver a shot or not but I thought I would bring it to your attention.

Hello there,

could somebody out there help me out with this problem?

Here's what I know:

every couple minutes my external speakers generate this harsh tinny static. the static varies in intensity but typically lasts for 2-6 seconds. Even with audio muted out this distortion still occurs, but at a much fainter volume. Switching to the on-board soundcard (SigmaTel?), this crackling seems to vanish. My speakers and external soundcard worked fine on a previous system (windows xp, if that is relevant).

What's the way to troubleshoot this? It's a persistent problem and hope to leave this fuzz behind me

Last night I was in a Skype call with my friends and it sounded funny but I didn't notice it.
(I had earbuds which I gave it away to my relative.)

I bought some headphones the other day by the way and it came today.
Before giving away the earbuds I was playing Team Fortress 2 and it sounded weird a little and it was bothering.

Yet I still continued, after a while I got the headphones and plugged it in the audio jack or what do you call it and its where you plug the headphones or whatever in. So I played TF2 again and the sound was messed up, I could barely hear people and when I watch certain youtube videos it is buzzing very loudly and some I can't hear and some are fine.

I continuously search for an answer, I found a post on here so I decided do the solution on that forum but it didn't work. I used the Minion's Banana song and if I can't hear the second left minion well and it's sound is distorted or messed up then it's still happening.

Post I found is here,
Messed up headphone audio; want to check headphone jack
I think it is the place where you plug it in, somethings wrong with it so any solutions?

Hi @Marcus727 ,Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues with help from the community!I came across your post about the Notebook, and wanted to assist you! I have looked into your issue about your HP ENVY TouchSmart 15-j003tx Notebook and issues with the Sound after a Windows 10 upgrade. Here is a link to help resolve the speakers and sound not working correctly. The link to using the Windows troubleshooting tool is the best for this situation. You could try: 1. Right click the Speaker icon in the bottom right corner by your time.2. Click Playback Devices.3. Click Speakers.4. Click properties.5. Click the advanced tab on the Properties window.6. Change the Default Format drop-down to the highest quality.7. Apply the properties.8. Click OK to close the properties window. You could  try using the Windows Update Troubleshooting tool to fix any updates that have not come through for Windows 10.  Please restart the Notebook twice to make sure all update have been completed! Please let me know how this goes. Thanks.

I have a Linda Ronstadt Greatest Hits CD that plays perfectly on my car's CD player. All the tracks sound distorted if I try to play it on a desktop computer using Windows Media Player running on a 64 bit version of Windows 7 Home Premium. The audio sounds like it is playing on a slightly mistuned radio. Other CDs play fine on the computer. I tried ripping a few tracks using Winamp and Roxio Creator and the MP3 files have the same distortion.

I am trying to figure out if I am running into some kind of copy protection scheme or there is something about this particular disc that the CD/DVD drive does not like about it. The disc is on the Elektra/ Asylum label and was manufactured in Germany. It has a GEMA/BIEM marking.

I am not asking for help in circumventing any copy protection but want to know if anyone has ever heard of this type of protection.

I have an ASUS A7N8X with an AMD 2100+, 512MB (Dual-Channel) PC2700 RAM and GeForce TI 4200 - I'm running CPU/Memory frequency at 133MHz. All of these items are less than 60 days old. Cutscenes during games are a complete headache: The video hesitates and gets choppy and the audio gets distorted. It seems to happen rhythmically, as if in line with clock cycles. I noticed that the CPU usage spikes to over 90% during the distortion/delay. It does the same thing when I run any video files. It primarily happens when I'm running off of CD-Rom. Any thoughts?

Good Day all,
About a week ago, I started having a problem where audio begins distorting any time I'm connected to the internet. The sound on any video or audio site would either slow down and distort dramatically, or play with intermittent popping and crackling in the background. Whenever the sound slows down, so does my entire computer. The same thing happens even if I'm listening to music or watching videos that are stored on my hard drive. However, as long as I am disconnected from the internet, the audio is fine.

Around the same time, I began having problems with web pages loading. I am unsure if the two are related, but I believe they are so I'm adding it here, in case it could help make finding a solution easier. When I click on a link, or try to load a site from the Google Chrome homepage, sometimes I may get an error saying the the DNS sever could not be found. The exact error is DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN. The page would then reload (or prompt me to reload), and when it's complete, there would be pictures and videos missing, not fully loaded. I would then have to reload the page again before it appears fully.

I tried disabling Google Chrome plugins and extensions, updating device drivers, and even formatting my hard drive and reinstalling the OS, all to no avail. I would really appreciate some help in the matter.

Okay, I've got a problem with a brand-new DVD drive that's driving me nuts - BECAUSE I SHOULD KNOW HOW TO FIX IT!

The drive is in perfect condition and when sound is disabled it will play video in perfect quality. But with audio, there is heavy distortion approaching chaos, and the sound is barely decipherable at all. The video chops as it tries to synch with this. CD audio fares no better.

This is NOT a new problem, however. I FIXED IT BEFORE on the CD drive that came with my computer - it was doing the same thing with Audio CDs. I just don't remember what I did.

I KNOW this thing can work, and I can't find any useful solutions anywhere. I'm desperate here. My other CD drive works perfectly, but I need the DVD drive to work too. Any suggestions would be really really really really appreciated. DVDs and CDs are just plain intolerable playing like this.

Thanks a lot to anyone who reads this.

A:DVD/CD Drive produces distorted audio

Do you have thing hooked up to the sound card via the three-pin (analog) connector or via the two-pin (digital) connector, or not at all? Makes a huge difference depending on which way you went with that (I recomend the Two-Pin route myself, if you have a sound card that supoports that.)

Otherwise, I'd be looking for updated drivers, and possibly firmware updates, if they are applicible to this issue.

Hi, wondering if anyone can help me with a distorted sound problem on an old Fujitsu Siemens Laptop A1630. It has a Sis 7012 sound card. Full specs are here: http://uk.ts.fujitsu.com/rl/servicesupport/techsupport/lifebook/AMILO/Amilo-A/Amilo_A_1630.htm The problem is slightly intermittent although it occurs most of the time. I boot the machine and the windows logon sound is distorted. All sounds are distorted/sound slow whether played from disk or streamed from the web. I have scoured forums for a solution but havent found one yet. So far I have tried: Reinstalling soundcard drivers, audio codecs, updating windows, checking dma/pio settings, checking irq resources, checking task manager for high cpu/disk usage. I have alot of disk space, around 30gb and memory doesnt seem to be a problem. The weird thing is if I rightclick on a file via explorer then whilst the context menu is in place, the audio plays fine! Any ideas people?

I just installed a new DVD burner in my pc. When I play a DVD in the NEC burner the sound is broken up and very distorted. I have a Windows XP Media Center in my pc. I have tried playing it in both Media Center and Power DVD with the same results. Could it have anything to do with the way I installed it and set the jumpers? I have one cable with 2 connections. In the instructions it states.
When two drives are connected to the same interface cable one must be set to MASTER, and one set to SLAVE. Alternatively, both drives may be set to CABLE SELECT, in which case the system defines which drive is MASTER which drive is SLAVE
If you are installing the NEC DVD drive as a second drive, look at the settings on the second drive (already in your system). If the settings on that drive are set to MASTER or SLAVE, set the jumper on the NEC DVD drive to the opposite setting. If the existing drive is set to CABLE SELECT (csel), set the jumper on the NEC DVD drive to csel also.
The last is what I did. Although it didn't have printed over the jumper CSEL, but it did have 3 letters. Both drives work ( I have a DVD ROM and the new DVD burner which burns both + & - DVD's. When I play the DVD in the DVD ROM it plays just fine both sound a picture are good.
