Windows media player for Windows 10 will not show video for .MPG files

Q: Windows media player for Windows 10 will not show video for .MPG files

I recently purchased a DELL Inspiron 15 7000 series laptop computer.
Windows Media Player for Windows 10 will only play the audio portion of .MPG files. The video portion of the .MPG file will not play. (.MP4 files are working fine)
If I transfer the .MPG file to my (now) old DELL laptop which is running Windows 7, the .MPG files plays both audio and video...as one would expect.
This suggests to me the issue has something to do with the video card in my new DELL Inspiron 15 7000 laptop computer.
How can/do I go about resolving this issue so that I can play .MPG videos on my new DELL laptop?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I'm at my wits end.

I put together a capable gaming pc about a month ago with a bunch of new components and some cannibalized older components.

I installed all of the drivers from the motherboard cd. I have a radeon x1300 vid card. I'm running windows xp home ed. I've installed about every codec and plugin under the sun. I've troubleshot my load with regard to Windows itself.

I cannot play Windows Media Audio/Video files for the life of me.

I do get audio, but the video is all hyper-colored like looking at scrambled porn.

It doesn't matter if I download the video or watch it in a browser (any browser). It doesn't matter if I open up the DLed video in real player, Windows Media player or Generic DIVX player #458973: it still comes out all scrambled and in crazy moon-man rainbow colors.

I have no problem playing any other type of windows media player file. Quicktime works fine as well.

Please help.

A:Windows Media Player won't properly play Windows Media Audio/Video files

Well standard Window's media files should play without the need for any additional codecs.

Maybe check the forums of your vid card for some answers.

I would like to send home videos on DVD to my father-in-law in China.

Copies of DVDs I burn do not play in China. I believe DVDs are region specific.

My father-in-law has a PC so I was wondering if there is anyway I could convert a DVD that would run on my player into Windows Media Video format (.wmv)?

Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

This doesnt happen with every video I play, but in many of them when it gets to the last 2-3 min sometimes the video will freeze and the audio will keep going. At that point, the audio finishes till the end of the file, and then I have to close WMP using ctrl-alt-del because it stops responding. I'm pretty sure that it's not the videos themselves since I never have any video issues with them playing on my laptop. This only happens on my desktop system.

Is there any sort of known issue with this happening? Any tips?

Thanks in advance.

I transferred some .mov files from my iphone to my laptop using Dropbox. In Dropbox, there is a green check meaning the file is completely transferred.  When I open Dropbox on my iphone, I can access the .mov files.  However, when I open Dropbox on my Windows 7 laptop, some .mov files work (everything in Sept) but some .mov files (everything from Oct 1 and on) only have audio but no video.  What is the issue?

A:.MOV video files won't play on windows media player

OK, I was told to install LAV filter and uninstall ffdshow.  That worked.  Maybe Apple used a difference video codec starting Oct. 1.  Anyways, that seemed to solve the problem.  However, the Oct mov files now only show icon.  I can't get it to show thumbmail like the Sept mov files.  Under "Tools" and "folder options" and "view" I unchecked "Always show icons, never thumbnails". But it only applied this to the Sept .mov files and not the Oct .mov files. The Oct .mov files still show an icon. How do I make them all show thumbnail?

I'm really at a loss on what to do here, please help!

I had (not sure what version) Windows Media Player (on my Windows XP computer) and until recently it opened up and played video files just fine, but for the past few days - as soon as I clicked on or tried to play a video file, it said something like:

"Windows Media Player has encountered a problem and needs to close."

This morning I thought I'd download Windows Media Player 11 to see if that worked, but I've found that I have the exact same problem... so I'm really stuck!
Additional Details

Now, it's not just 'one' particular video file that isn't working, it's ALL of my files which usually work perfectly, and yes, I do have a codec installed (specifically - K Lite Codec Pack) . Could it be a virus effecting my media players (I say players because I've found that Google Video and Media Player Classic aren't working either)?

Can someone please help me out, I really need to get it working again!

Thank you!

Ok so I've had this problem before and I've got no idea what's causing it or how to fix it. Windows media player is the only thing I've got installed on my laptop to play music files and such. I usually use it for music and in some cases listening to lectures I've had to record for my classes. Anyway it happens on occasion that when I double click the audio file it will just start playing. I know that sounds like it's supposed to happen but the Media Player window doesn't pop up, it doesn't show up in the taskbar, even in it's minimized form, and when I try opening the task manager to close the program it doesn't show up under the lists for applications or processes. The sound file still runs as if the media player were open though and I can't control it. The only way I've found to fix this is to open the media player from start menu which gets to be annoying when all I wanted to do was listen to the file.

Is this a normal bug or is something I can fix?

I would like to upgrade to a newer version of media player but I have not been able to get the other ones to show the playlist like the media player 7.0 can. I go to websites and listen to 4 hour audio files that are listed in many segments worth so many minuets apiece. It automatically shows me all this information and I can select any segment at any counter reading. But if I upgrade then all of this information is not available to me. There is no way I can select a particular segment and counter reading with the newer players. It looks like this
Coast to coast1 00:00
Coast to coast2 00:00
Coast to coast3 00:00
etc. The list continues down the right side of the window and I can select any one and see the amount of time per segment as well as pick the counter of that segment. Once an upgrade is done You have to listen to the whole thing and you can't choose which segment you want to hear. Even if I pick show playlist the above playlist does not appear.

Do you have any suggestions or hints to this dilema.

Welcome to TSG .

You'd do well to read this before requesting help with bittorrent or other P2P protocols . They are not supported on this forum . http://www.techguy.org/rules.html

Your video issue sounds like missing codecs . You can get K-Lite codec packs here http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_lite_codec_pack.htm . Alternatively download VLC Player which comes with a comprehensive codec pack http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

If anyone can help me please.

You need to download and install the codec for the type of video you are trying to play (as the error states).

You can open the file in a program such as MediaInfo. That will show you which codecs are needed.

Or use a different media player such as MPC-HC or VLC.

This is driving me nuts.  On my office's windows 7 box, I turned on video streaming from windows media player 12, and my files (mkv, mpg, etc.) show up and can play fine on my sony dlna certified dvd player.
So... I then tried to install and do the same from my windows 2008 server that I have in my basement.  After hours of searching, I discovered that it cannot be done from windows 2008 server. (a topic for other discussions, it simply can't be done)
So, no problem, I removed windows server 2008 from my basement computer, and installed windows 7 ultimate.  I installed the exact same codecs that are on my office's windows 7 box.  I turned on streaming from windows media player 12.  Now,
some files show up, but all of my mkv's do not.  Even the ones that that I tested with from my office's windows 7 computer.  No, they are not on file shares, I know wmp 12 can't do that, so I made sure the files were local.
So, same operating system (windows 7), same codecs installed, same media files, media plays fine locally, file permissions are good, just the files do not show up on my dlna device from my basement computer!  What step am I missing?

A:Media Player 12 streaming, not all files show on my dlna device.

as weird as this sounds, try renaming a mkv file to extension wmv. Depending on
codecs installed, this may work. alot depends on the file formats supported by
both devices and what the receiving device is able to transcode. Windows does
not natively support mkv files. See the file formats at

ok (as you my know by know i rarther hate windows media player)

well basicly i have loads of .mp3 files in my Docs and my music folders, there not all music files, when windows media sees them it ads them to libary, Annoyingly, i manages to stop it downloading extra info like album art (cos its soo stupid, it gets it wrong like 95% of the time lol) but it keeps adding every thing back to the libary even if i delete them from it, its soo annoying any!! surgestions please?

A:Solved: Stop Windows Media Player Automaticly ading media files to libary

In WMP go to Tools > Options and uncheck all the boxes in the Player tab, Privacy tab and Library tab.

In the Library tab click on Monitor Folders and set the top part to "My personal folders", then click on Advanced Options.

Set all the folders to "Ignore". Unfortunately you can't set the Rip folder to "Ignore" so for that go to the Rip music tab, where it says "Rip music to this location" click on Change and create an empty folder somewhere. Then just never add any music files to that folder.

Then delete everything out of the WMP library and it should remain empty.

I've been having a problem with my Windows 7 machine that began after a windows update the kept having trouble installing by appearing to never fully install the update. It would just show on the screen that it was done installing several but not every update (I don't know if that is related, but I assumed so). Either way for a few weeks now I've had trouble getting pictures or video to open in most any program, and with the Windows viewer and player they don't open media at all. After un/reinstalling Quicktime & VLC those now seem to be back to normal again and will open videos. IrfanView though never did lose the ability to open picture files the entire time.

I was needing some ideas on how to restore Windows Media Player and Windows picture viewer back to full functionality, I looked but did not see how to un/reinstall those programs individually since they seem to be a part of Windows 7. But along the way in an effort to fix these problems I have un/reinstalled my video drivers, changed file associations, run anti-virus/malware software, run SFC and installed all current updates for my system but I have yet to find a reason as to why it is doing this. Any help would be much appreciated.

Without knowing exactly what I'm looking for or how to best describe my tech issues I've included a few screen shots to show my system specs and examples of what would happen when I tried to open up files or even the system information under control panel.

Something happened to my Windows Media Player and i'm stuck, hope someone can help.

Just recently did a fresh install and everything worked fine, no issues with video's. Then one day I tried to play a video what has been played before with no problems and the video only displayed blue and green colors, with sound. I tried a few other video's and it was pretty much 50/50 some worked and others were blue green with sound. Same holds true for streaming video. Some are just blue green, the one's that work though, I have to run twice. The first attempt, half the video is green and the other is very pixelated (big pixels) and no sound. If I run it again, it plays fine. The video's I created which also worked in the past have issue's, while the video and sound are fine, WMP shrank the video into a box sized format (causing the video to be distorted).

I don't believe it's a codec issue since it used to work before.

I upgraded to the latest WMP and it all worked fine, but that version has to many bugs, and I downgraded back to WMP 9. Downloaded DIVX before this post hoping it would help, it didn't.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

i have some music videos and some films that i have downloaded and they still play just fine. but the ones i have ripped with DVD Fab (i own them btw) have since stopped working properly. they play audio but there is no video. when i play in full screen, instead of getting black like before, i get the same visualisations as if i was viewing an mp3 (the vortex/battery thing)

i downloaded the K-lite codec package thinking it may be that. nothing happened.
i have also noticed that when i view a movie/video, even though i can close the media player [X], it still playing. i can hear it. when i re-open it, its still playing as if i just minimised it.
so i don't know what to do.
(could my G15 keyboard be keeping the file running in the background somehow)

i am not in favour of a 'roll back' (system restore) because i don't know when it started. (not to mention the loss in data)
and for those who don't know. the vista media player is apart of the program. it can't be uninstalled nor re-installed without re-installing all of vista again.
/cry
not a pleasant thought.

thanks for any help you can give me

Hi guys,

First off, I'm not a computor wizard by any stretch of the imagination, but once I've got through the computor jargon I can do most things, lol

Right, my problem involves Windows Media Player. For some reason it has just stopped working. It still plays music, and still plays visualizations, but I can't get actual video's to play. I've tried updating to Version 11, I've tried going to 'Set Program Access And Defaults' and setting WMP to my default media player. I'm kind of at a loss at what to do to sort it out. I've tried searching the interent, including this forum, and have tried anything that I've found on here, and I still can't get it to play.

If anyone can give me anything that may help, I'm willing to try anything. And I'll apoligise in advance for my inexperience and general thickness in computor related jargon lol . Thanks in advance!

Hello,

Sorry for the upset, but the frustration of dealing with Windows programing can get the best of you occasionally.

I was hoping to go to Windows on-line help files to find something that shouldn't need an on-line search in the first place.

I've had this frustration before and sense it's not that frequently that I do this it ends up taking me an hour to find what I'm after every time.

You'd think that a corporation as big as Microsoft wouldn't allow something as obvious as this to slip by them but they did.

Anyhow, know that I've possibly conveyed some of the frustration of trying to find the simplest of things maybe some here will be able to show me where they are hiding this one simple option of:

ADDING INDIVIDUAL ADDITIONAL GENRES (like Home, Movies, SciFi, etc.) TO "GENRE" IN WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER 11 VIDEO LIBRARY.

The frustration of having to even look for this option is mind blowing. I mean who the ^%$ doesn't know to put a right click option for adding video genres???

At these times one has to scratch their heads at how incompetent a Microsoft team must be to miss this obvious of a thing?

Anyhow, I hope I haven't deterred anyone from helping me here by showing you a little of the frustration at these times but I really do appreciate being able to come here and usually get a good answer if not a great on. Thanks.

John

A:Windows Media Player Video Genres

I did find where to change the genre for Windows Media Player 11.In the Video Library under the "VIEW OPTIONS" (right next to the search engine at the top of the page), the "DETAILS" is where one can easily change the genre of a video.Of course I still can't figure out why Microsoft can't include a right click option to make it obviously easy instead of the mind thrashing trying hide and seek of where it actually is.Anyhow, I am more writing this for future reference. I've been remembering that I can access my previous listings and this will be there the next time I do a total re-install and forget where this option is all over again. So, that is: Windows Media Player 11 > Video Library > VIEW OPTIONS (top of page left of search) > DETAILS (option for changing genres). How about this:1. Windows Media Player 112. Video Library3. "VIEW OPTIONS"4. "DETAILS" (option for changing genres). That should do.John to me!

I noticed a few weeks ago that I can no longer stream video online with Windows Media Player. CNN.com, MTV.com, all streams from all sites just don't play. The pop-up window will appear, everything will load, but Windows Media Player will do nothing but be paused. I've updated my video card drivers, I have the latest WMP with updated codecs, but still...

Any suggestions? Thanks so much for any help you can provide!

A:Windows Media Player Does Not Stream Video

Do the following:

How to troubleshoot playback of network or Internet media
Streaming media over the Internet is subject to all standard network connectivity troubleshooting. Server-side issues cause the most commonly-experienced issues. • Make sure that the Internet Wizard or Network Connection Wizard has been run on the system. If it has not been, run either wizard:1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Communications.
2. Click New Connection Wizard.
3. Follow the instructions and complete the wizard.

• Try connecting to the stream with Mplayer2:1. Click Start, click Run, and then type mplayer2.
2. Click OK.
3. On the File menu, click Open, and then type the URL for the media.

• Verify that the system is not behind a firewall or proxy and verify the Windows Media Player specific network settings:1. Open Windows Media Player, and then on the Tools menu, click Options.
2. On the Network tab, make sure that all of the protocol boxes are selected, and then verify that the proxy settings are correct.

• Try disabling Internet Connection Sharing or any firewall software if it is enabled.
• For more information on setting your firewall configuration for Windows Media, please see the following Microsoft Web site:

Now it may well have been something I've done when doing a tidy up But :-
My windows Media Player once played dvd's although that's along time ago.
Now when I put a film in I simply get a message
"Windows Media Player cannot play the DVD because a compatible DVD decoder is not installed in your computer"

Trouble is it should have them because they are part of the basic XP set up.
I can't remember what version I was using originally, but took a Microsoft update to version 11
hoping that would overwrite my non working version, but no change in the error message.

I can play video from my small camera running .MVI
I don't like the idea of trying to upload codecs from some other source and obviously don't want to reinstall my XP home
with the probable loss of years of information within this small box of tricks !!

I have managed a couple of years without it working, but want to solve the problem & not go out into a cold garage to put DVDs into an old windows 98SE system any more.

Any disk error related messages in Event Viewer (corresponding to a time a DVD is loaded)? Have you tried a different optical drive in the lappy? May be that the drive has gone belly up?

Windows media player is killing my PC. I dont personally use it but some ****ers embed it on their webpages without warning. My CPU goes up to 100% usage and my screen flickers black, everything renders super slow - meaning forcing the application to close is a nightmare but possible. After I've forced firefox to shut down through the task manager (closing the tab just doesnt work or trying to close the program normally) all my window toolbar buttons (the x max and min buttons) are completely black and dont return to normal until I restart my computer.
If I try to load up a game after this has happened it either wont run, will say it cant initialise direct3d or will say that I have not enough video ram (depending on the game) until I reboot.

This has happened with 2 different graphics cards, different hard drives, different windows XP Pro installs, I even upgraded media player to version 10... or 11 - the black shiny one (dont want to risk opening it to check) I've uninstalled all the codecs that I'd ever installed and reinstalled them - no difference.

I'm completely out of ideas.

A:Video Settings in Windows Media Player!?

Welcome to Tech Guy Forum

1.
Which version of Windows have you?
RIGHT click "computer" or "my computer"
Left click "properties"

2.
Is WMP 11 the 1st version of WMP you had installed on this computer? If not, when & from what did you upgrade.

3.
Which video card / chip is in your computer?
RIGHT click "computer" or "my computer"
Left click "manage".
Maximize the screen.
Left click "device manager"
Left click the "+" to the left of display adapter.

4.
Go to control panel. If, in the upper left, you see "switch to classic view", click on it.
Do you have nVidia control panel or something for ATI?

Recently, I installed an XFX 8600 GTS card. In control panel, I have nVidia's control panel, which allows me to make the adjustments you noted.
