DisplayPort causing system to go offline when monitors powered off

Q: DisplayPort causing system to go offline when monitors powered off

Ok...I am having problems with DisplayPort. My home HP ProDesk 600 G1 DM w/ 12Gb RAM running Windows 7 64bit and (Intel HD Graphics 4600) has two HP LA2306x monitors. The HP monitors are connected via two DisplayPorts

Problem 1: But when I power off the monitors but leave the computer running, Windows 7 losses all my desktop settings. All my icons and open windows default over to the primary screen. I have been dealing with this for two years now...when I power them back on I must move all my windows around again. Its very annoying.

I have read various threads on how to resolve this but none of them work for me.

A) I can't change the EDID setting for my Intel 4600 graphics card (if I can, I can't figure out where)
B) I have gone into the monitor menu settings and disabled the DDC/CI Support on both monitors
C) I have changed the computers power mgmt settings to NOT sleep, hibernate or anything of the sort

Problem 2:
The above really drives me nuts. However, now a new issue has occurred and the driving me nuts has turned into driving me mad. I have an external hard drive connected to this computer, I am running Samsung's SmartView so my TV can access all the movies/tv shows on that hard drive. When I power off monitors, my TV can no longer see/access the SmartView app and/or the external hard drive.

So if I am downstairs and want to stream a movie from this external hard drive, I must go back up stairs and power on the monitors.

I know I am not the only one with DisplayPort issues when the monitors are powered off, but others have been able to find solutions (like the ones listed above)....

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello, I'm wondering if it's possible to have a dual monitors on the HP ProDesk 400 G2.5 using both the VGA and DisplayPort at the same time. Will this allow me to extend the display to both monitors? If not, what will I need to purchase to gain this capability? Thanks,John

A:Using VGA in conjunction with DisplayPort for dual monitors ...

The VGA port and Display Port perform the same function just in different ways.  VGA is analog and Display Port is digital.  Unfortunately, it's not going to work the way you think.  You will be looking at the same information on two different monitors without the ability to drag and drop from one to the other.  In order to have a true dual monitor experience, you would need to purchase an inexpensive video card like the VisionTek Radeon PCI card which is specifically designed for this functionality.  This is due to the fact that the dual monitor ability has to be configured via the software that comes with the stand alone card. I hope this helps.

Hello Tech Support Guys, I have this problem for a while now and I need your assistance.
I have a GTX1060 6gb and anything I try to plug in my 3 displayports flickers, 'goes blackscreen' and shows a lot of tearing. It happens in and out of games. It doesn't happen on the DVI or the HDMI ports.

I do have a monitor that supports both HDMI and displayport, but since I use a VR headset, having to plug and unplug the HDMI cable to use VR is annoying (Oculus CV1 uses HDMI). Also, freesync would be great.

My progress so far:
**I have noticed that, the lower the resolution on the monitor (and the refresh rate), the better the displayport performs. "Great" at 1024 x 768 resolution. It's a usefull trick to use while playing in VR.
**already tried two displayport cables and two displayport to hdmi adapters.
**already tried using DDU to reinstall my nvidia drivers

Anyone have any idea of what is happening?
Are my 3 displayports damaged?
Should I keep using the displayport or is it a risk for my monitor?

Greetings everyone!

This is my very first post and I come with a question. I am looking into purchasing a refurb Dell 990 SFF for basic home usage (spreadsheets, word processing, internet...no gaming or graphic/audio intensive use). The onboard graphics and Displayport is an integrated Intel HD Graphics 2000 with a Displayport 1.1a output. I currently have a monitor with Displayport in but no Displayport out so I can daisy-chain. What is the best strategy for connecting second monitor? Is the native DP 1.1a out splittable for extended desktop? Do I need to buy a DP splitter external peripheral? I should note the additional output options include an old VGA out; all USBs are 2.o. Thanks in advance.

I know that this is a year old, but I have a problem with my monitors. I have 2 DVI monitors and 2 DisplayPort monitors. For some reason, Control Panel -> Screen Resolution shows it as 2, 3, 1, 4, but when I click on Identify, they show up as 1, 3, 2, 4. The DisplayPort monitors have the wrong enumeration numbers compared to the screen resolution page. This also causes issues on my Virtual Box as Virtual Screen 1 shows up as Host Screen 1 and Virtual Screen 2 shows up as Host Screen 3. This related to 2 and 3 respectively as per the Screen Resolution page.

What's going on here and how do I fix this mess?

I have two 27" 2560x1440 60hz monitors that are plugged into the new Pro side-connect dock (40AH) with a new T480 (Intel 620 integrated graphics) in Windows 10 Pro. I can get either monitor to work fine with the dock individually, but trying to run both simultaneously by extending or duplicating the desktop between them seems to fail as selecting either option under Display Settings just makes the primary monitor black out for a few seconds then come back - the secondary monitor stays black.  There's no error msg or popup that would help me investigate further unfortunately. I'm trying this with the T480's lid closed, and I'm running the latest 1.14 BIOS update and latest Intel HD graphics drivers. This setup worked fine on my old OneLink dock and X1 Carbon previously, so I don't think it's an issue with the monitors themselves. Anyone have a similar setup with the new Pro dock that's working?

Brief bullet point explanation of my issue: I use my Lenovo Y720 for day trading programs and such.I have a 4 port USB 3.0 hub plugged into one of my three USB 3.0 ports.I have two USB powered ASUS monitors plugged into the hub and utilize these with no issues as screens 2 & 3 with my Y720 screen.I have an Elgato Stream Deck for hot buttons plugged into another one of my Y720's USB 3.0 ports that also works smoothly. This leaves me with one USB 3.0 port on my Y720 and 2 on my USB hub. However, whenever I plug in one more USB device (such as my portable hard drive), the screens start flickering on and off (the way they do when you add one more screen and it's figuring out which screen is 1, 2, 3, etc.) But it just keeps doing that. It never settles in. They keep going on and off like I'm plugging in and unplugging a screen. I'm forced to unplug one USB device (no matter which I choose) to get the screens back to normal. I'm moderately tech savvy but not with the intricacies of graphics cards, etc. and am resorting to this post to see if anyone can point me in the right direction which will allow me to use all of what I need to use. I wasn't even sure what to search for in these forrums for my problem. If there is a thread that answers this questions, I'd love to read it. Thank you in advance to anyone who can help.

I have a Dell Latitude E7450 laptop with a E-Port Plus II port replicator connected to two external monitors using DisplayPort which will not output to multiple monitors.
I have another Dell model and when placed on the port replicator with two external monitors connected, booting into BIOS/UEFI the screen is cloned onto each monitor. However, when doing the same with a brand new Dell Latitude E7450 only one screen is active - the other is off. Within Windows itself, I can only have 1 monitor connected to the port replicator. If I undock, I can run 3 monitors independently indicating an issue with the dock rather than a hardware limitation with the laptop itself.
I believe the above tests eliminates the OS or driver issue and highlights a compatibility issue between the new Dell Latitude E7450 laptop and E-Port Plus II port replicator. I have tried this on 2 separate machines with the same results. I have also updated both the graphics drivers (Version, A16) and the BIOS (Version A04) to the latest releases. I have also tried using DVI cables as well as swapping out the port replicators. Nothing works. In Windows 8.1 itself, it actually shows as two monitors active, but one is not on. If I swap out the monitors to a different brand, I get the same result.
Is there a BIOS/UEFI setting I need to change? Is there a newer port replicator or update I need?

I ran into an issue with a user's computer. Initially, he was experiencing problems with the computer running slow. A previous technician diagnosed the issue and decided to run Combofix to clear any issues that might be causing this. However, in running Combofix, the files in the folder C:/windows/csc folder/d6 or %systemroot%/csc folder/d6 were treated as malware and moved to C:/Qoobox/Quarantine/C/Windows/csc folder/d6 and renamed with the extension .vir. In doing so, the user has lost some of his data. Although the data represents files on a share drive on a server, in syncing the share drive's files in order to make them available offline, some of those files were lost. Well, at least that's how it seems as the user's files seemed to have disappeared around the same time Combofix was run.

We've tried a system restore to the day BEFORE Combofix was run to no avail. We've also tried to use batch file renaming programs as we made copies of the files in the Quarantine in order to get them out of quarantine and rename them without the .vir extension, put them back in their original folder and resync, but that did not work. The Windows resynchronization process reports that some of the files can't be restored because the user is not connected to the server, even though he is. Nonetheless, after that attempt, the files that were missing are still missing.

The files themselves vary from Excel spreadsheets to Word documents. The scan was perfo... Read more

Recently i received another monitor, making it 3 that i own. before i got the third monitor i was using the two with HDMI cables and they worked fine, however now that i have the other monitor i switched two of them to DisplayPort cables and kept my old smaller on the HDMI. When i have monitors plugged in 1 at a time they work but as soon as i plug in the HDMI with the DisplayPort my PC turns off and will not power back on.
I could go back to just using the two HDMI cables but that would mean i cant use my third monitor.

so the issue im having is so very far beyond bizzare to me. i will try to give as much detail as possible though.

i just recently installed windows 10 on a brand new SSD without any previous OS installed. i also just bought a new shiny 4K TV but am still using my Acer s230hl. i use the 4k tv for gaming and the acer monitor for browsing and chat and temp reads. since upgrading to windows 10 anytime i change source away from my PC to say my PS4 my computer will set my secondary monitor as the primary monitor. easy enough fix i just need to change primary back right? well this is where things hit the fan. if i switch back to my PC everything proceeds to freak out. i lose my taskbar entirely and resort to keyboard shortcuts and run commands to get places. ontop of that my resolution gets set from 4k to 1024p... further more my tv now gets locked at 30hz and will not go any higher despite it being a 60hz TV and previously going 60hz. even more so windows is now trying to set my 4k tv into 3d mode.... and i have incredible amounts of latency and imput lag.

what is going on and how in the world do i even begin to fix this

My main display uses hdmi into my 1660 ti, and i recently got a new display using DVI into the same GPU. I run games on my display while running spotify, browser, or xbox app on my second. Ever since I got the new monitor, I have been experiencing game crashes in every game. Once i unplugged my second monitor, the crashes stopped. Could my second monitor be overloading my GPU? I would think browsers and such would not do this, but I don't really know.

If yes, could I plug in a GTX 660 (low end card) and use that for my second monitor or will that draw too much power from my 500w PSU? my drivers are up to date and problem still persists

Do non-system hard drives automatically power down after x minutes of not being used? I've got 3 storage-only drives that I access very rarely, so as to conserve energy + reduce noise/heat I'd prefer to keep them powered down until I click on the specific drive in Windows Explorer.

It's possible that modern drives have this function and are at idle when not in use. If so, after how many minutes of non-use do they power down? Can this number be changed in the BIOS, for example? User software?

Thanks in advance.

A:Can non-system [storage only] HDDs be powered down?

The settings for turning off drives after so many minutes of inactivity is set in the power option plan you have set. There are three main power themes and the option to create your own custom power plan as well.

For an absolute turn drive off when not used having external drives or drives in external enclosures like fan cooled with an on/off switch would certainly solve any concerns on this. When not in use simply click the remove hardware safety icon in the system notification area to "eject" the external drive enclosure before turning the switch off.

Last night one of the Windows (anniversary?) updates messed up the connection to my second monitor (which is a TV and only used to watch movies) and as a result whenever I switch to it or even duplicate my screen it keeps hanging in a continuous flashing loop, either instantaneously or after 2-3 minutes.

I already tried rolling back to 4 different versions of the NVidia driver (from NVidia, not MS) since I had this problem before some months ago when I updated the NVidia driver from 362.00. Rolling back to that one solved the problem and later on -when trying a newer driver resulting in the same problem- I rolled back again without problem so I figured 362.00 was the last that worked proper for me so far.

A few weeks ago another MS Update messed up my (only) account -in effect needing me to login with my password while I only knew my PIN- and after 10 consecutive days of troubleshooting using every known method to reset accounts through cmd/regedit/seth.file, Hiren and Linux distros I had to do a complete restore. While restoring and reinstalling drivers my NVidia driver was automatically updated to 368.69 and everything was fine regarding a newer GPU driver. So that was at least 1% of luck after 99% drama. Now again a MS update messed up something since it also updated my GPU to 368.81 (I didn't know you could turn of GPU driver updates in MS Auto-update till just now) and I am seriously pissed since again, every "normal" troubleshooting so far has been fruitles... Hi and thanks for looking at this for me. Dell PC was purchased in Sept of this year. For the past week, I've noticed at least a few times coming home and noticing the PC powered down. There would've been no indication of a problem other than that and a radeon card message in the systray about settings restored due to a system failure. I got the BSOD after I started in safe mode w/networking just to see if anything turned up. I restarted from that point and that's when the BSOD occurred and the minidump file was created. I have noted just a few anomalies with this PC: sometimes a quick buzz when playing a game or an audio file and older games that worked on WinXP SP3 not working after installing on this new pc. I guess maybe that's expected though(?). Not sure.

Are there any adapters to do this or ways to do this? I can't seem to find any.

I am buying new monitors, the dell u2414h. Now, while this does have hdmi, I will be connecting multiple monitors together to extend the display from the laptop to give me multiple screens. The problem with this is that it only works if you use displayport and not hdmi, so I need a way to convert the hdmi to displayport or mini displayport.

I will primarily be using these monitors with my laptop that has displayport, so that is why I am getting these monitors and that won't be a problem. I will most likely hook up other laptops to the monitors and hdmi is way more common from what I have seen on laptops than displayport and is why I need a way to go from hdmi to displayport or mini displayport.

Any ideas? Thanks.

A:Hdmi to Displayport/Mini Displayport

You can't, HDMI does not support daisy chaining in the manner that DisplayPort does and you can't use a simply adapter to go from HDMI to DisplayPort and get the features of DisplayPort.

Hi there

Intuitively one might think using Powered (from the mains) external USB HDD's would require more power from the computer as well compared with those small self powered units.

I've no way to measure this but I'm sure the small units might consume MORE power as the computer has to supply all the power for Disk rotation and the USB I/O controller.

I only ask this because I need to put two large powered USB units (both with 2 X 3 TB Raid 0 HDD's in each unit) on to a USB 3 Hub.
The two HDD units seem to perform perfectly well whether connected to the chargeable port on an HP laptop or the "non chargeable" ones.

The RAID 0 is powered by the HDD itself (internal Hardware RAID) --used RAID 0 for speed -- don't need to mirror etc - I've enough backup if the whole thing goes bonkers. !!

The files on these HDD's are serving music and video so not intensive used -- don't seem to have any problem streaming media from the laptop.

Any engineers out there - curious over what is the actual load (power wise) on the computer if a POWERED USB HDD is used compared to a Self powered one. Note the Hub I'm using is not also powered.

I'll be helping you with your computer. You seem to be infected with a SmartService Rootkit. Please read this post completely before beginning. If there's anything that you do not understand, please don't hesitate to ask before proceeding. Please take note of the guidelines for this fix:
Please note that I am a volunteer. I do have a family, a career, and other endeavors that may prevent immediate responses that meet your schedule. Do note that the differences in time zones could present a problem as well. Your patience and understanding will be greatly appreciated.
First of all, the procedures we are about to perform are specific to your problem and should only be used on this specific computer.

If things appear to be better, let me know. Just because the symptoms no longer exist as before, does not mean that you are clean.
Continue to read and follow my instructions until I tell you that your machine is clean.

Hello, my name is Mitch- I used to have an account here a long time ago but forgot the email/username. And I received the best help one could ask for!- so I'm back with another problem :\
Its hard to explain so please bare with me.Basically the problem is while I am playing my PC game (Starcraft) my game and computer freezes which then causes me to power off my laptop by holding the power button. When I try to turn the system back on Windows fails to load- causing me to System Restore. This has happened over 20 times. I don't really understand the cause of it completely but I have started figuring out what TRIGGERS the game/computer to freeze. I will attempt to explain:
I play the game everyday and it seems certain things trigger my system to freeze and then not let me reload windows. Sometimes when I'm a certain race (there are 3) it will freeze. example-Whenever I am (protoss or zerg) I wont have ANY issues. But whenever I choose the race (Terran) to play with- either right at the beginning or end of game it freezes; or when I'm in game and hit the Menu, Ally, or Chat Button it will freeze up ( but when only when I'm Terran ) . Also When i watch replays and the replay is over it happens.

So I dont understand completely if maybe i have malware causing my problem- or my game is corrupted.

After every time I do my system restore- I update my AV and MBAM and do scans- and it doesnt find anything.
My only guess is that my game is corrupted- ... Read more

i am using wxp, dialup.
the problem is this: when i am not online, and want to access IE, offline and select offline,
the system starts dialing the access number.Even tho I cancel it , it repeats,
and wants to dialup again, in offline mode, until I exit IE. In fact if I pull up any program that is operative in an online mode, eg., market quote software, and i try to work in offline mode, the system will try to dialup or dialin. How do I correct this?

A:HELP, system dialsup in OFFLINE MODE???

Seems like it shouldn't work that way, but maybe you have to select 'Never dial a connection' in Control Panel - Internet Options - Connections tab.

I am running windows 7 on my desktop and I can't get it to start.
When I try startup repair on the "windows error recovery" screen it will go to a windows loading files screen, load the bar, and back to the windows error recovery screen.

If I try to choose starting normally it will go to the starting windows screen, then to a hp menu screen where you see all the f_ otions, then a raid options window, them again back to the windows error recovery screen.

I've tried a restore and it didn't fix the problem. Also, all the diagnostic tests come up as everything is working.

The only thing is, after trying to run the repair a few times, I got this:

Problem Event Name: Startup Repair Offline
Problem signature 1: 6.1.7600.16380
Sig 2: " "
Sig 3: unknown
Sig 4: -1
Sig 5: system disk
Sig 6: q
Sig 7: NoOsInstalled
Os version: 6.1.7600.
Locale I'd: 1033

I don't know what any of that means.
I'm willing to restore to factory settings and see of that works if I can back up my files... Which o also don't remember how to do, but I'd rather not.
Any suggestions?

I have seen many postings about this virus and no one other than USASMA has been able to give a helping hand. The way it started was a window opened while i was in IE and asked if i would like to allow (something) to run...I assumed it was java or something and clicked allow...2 sec later a blue screen of death is in front of me for a brief second and it resarts....every time it restarts it is the same thing...loading windows files...then a green loading bar above the word windows...it then brings me to the Start up repair and recovery and the same message comes up...Start up repair could not repair windows....I have tried everything from Image recovery to system restore and they do not work...I have run both a hard drive diagnostic and a mem test provided by USASMA and they say everything is 100%....i am not sure if i have the Win 7 disk...the laptop is a year old sony vaio and I actually have this problem on another laptop and have had no success....any help is really appreciated!!!

A:Startup Repair Offline system error

Hello and welcome to the forums :)

Have you tried to boot the computer in safe mode?

If you can boot it in safe mode, you could run a virus removal software, if you get it running again, may I suggest Microsoft Security Essentials?

Best of luck,

My computer crashed today and when I tried to reboot it it gave me a message on a black screen saying
"Selected boot device not available -
Strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility
Press F5 to run onboard diagnostics."

Every time I try to reboot I get the same message. So I inserted my hard copy of 64bit Vista and clicked on Repair your computer, and went to do full system restore back to factory settings. But where it tells me to select an operating system to repair nothing appears in the window for me to click, so I can't move on and reset my PC.

Is anyone here able to help me with this?

Environment is win7 Professional 64bit client connected to active directory on Server 2003 domain.  There is a group policy to enable/disable offline files.  Win7 client is getting the correct policy applied to enable offline files.  The offline files service on win7 client is set to automatic startup, but does not start:  Error 3  The system cannot find the path specified.  I would also like to reinitialize client side cache, but it looks like this procedure has changed and I am unable to find documentation to reinitialize.

Ok I realize this will take time and I hope you can get to the bottom of it. Been living with the redirected websearches (too long) now even if I'm not "online", specifically upon start-up, it is taking my system FOREVER to get going! Sometimes it just stalls all together. I've worn out the task manager ending task, LOL!

To be honest with you, it seems like ever since I had to "upgrade" to Windows 7 it seems to act like it's running TWO operating systems at once and when I look at the items listed in Processes of the Task Manager there are MULTIPLE listings of the same things. At one time, years ago, I had been told that you can stop some of those "Processes" to help your computer run faster...

Anyway, I read some of the other treads on this and have attached the HiJackThis log PLEASE HELP!

Hi everybody,

Today I was trying to create a VirtualBox VM that had direct access to a partition which is the only one on its disk. This partition contains non-OS-specific data (including documents and music). The guest OS is Xubuntu and the host OS is Windows 7.

I succeeded in making the disk image for this configuration, only when I tried to write to it from Xubuntu it didn't save the changes (I couldn't see the changes in Windows 7 when I checked out that same partition). I investigated the problem and I found a solution on the internet: I needed to take the disk with the partition on it offline and then clear the "read only" attribute.

The solution involved using the DiskPart utility to perform those steps. I tried to take the disk offline (with Administrator access), but DiskPart gave the following error: "Disk attributes may not be changed on the current system disk or BIOS disk 0." This is strange since that disk isn't actually a system partition: it boots from C: which is where Windows itself is installed.

I ran Disk Manager, and it looked like this:

So it appears a tiny 100MB partition has been added to my second disk, which is the disk containing E: which I want to be able to access from within the VirtualBox VM.

So, I have the following questions:
Is that 100MB partition the reason it won't work?
If so, do I need this partition?
If so, is there a way to move it to my first disk without breaking my Windows installati... Read more

A:I can't take my non-system disk offline to remove its read-only attribute

Just set up E: as a shared folder in VirtualBox. You don't take anything offline, and i highly doubt the entire drive is "read only".

Hi, I wonder if anyone can help. I have been Googling all over the place last couple of days and looking through hundreds of regkeys but cannot find the answer.

We have 1800 PC's using Offline files to a NAS location. Even though the Group Policy is set to force PC's Offline no matter what the latency value. I have noticed some PC's that have Offline files enabled but are set to work online. Maybe set manually
before the GPO was applied. Anyway I was wondering if there is a way to detect on numerous PC's whether a PC is set to work Offline or Online? I have been looking to see if a regkey changes when the Work Offline / Online button is pressed on the file menu
of the redirected folder.

I have found a key that changes if you hit the button Work Online/ Offline button
manually HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\NetCache\OnlineTransitionLog Value - (name of nas share) but this clears when the PC is rebooted or logged out and does not reappear unless you do the switch again manually.
This will not work when I try to scan all the PC's.

Help would be much appreciated.
