I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,

After signing up I mentioned in the introduce yourself section that I tried to get GlassWire to run, unsuccessfully.  Condobloke replied and suggested I post my isuue here.

I am running Vista SP2 on a 64 bit Dell.  I downloaded to a specific folder that I created just for the software.  The erorr is announced in a small error window with    GlassWire 1.0.35 Setup    at the top left and says   GlassWire is not compatible with this Operating System.

It's a relatively new piece of software offerred through BleepingComputer at http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/glasswire/  which states  " GlassWire is currently in Beta so bugs may occur and it could cause issues on your computer. When testing GlassWire it worked perfectly on our computer, but as it is in beta we are required to give you this warning. "

Perhaps my 'puter isn't as perfect as it needs to be ... : )

Looks like a real good idea for security software.  I'd like to run it.

Best Regards,

Glenn

A:GlassWire Not Compatible With This Operating System

Hi gswiatek Glasswire indeed doesn't work on Windows Vista, you need at least Windows 7 to run it. A member of Glasswire team answered someone's question concerning this issue (note that the user is running the same version of Windows as you)https://forum.glasswire.com/t/latest-glasswire-will-not-install-on-vista-home-premium-sp2-64-bit/643Unfortunately, you'll have to look for another firewall to use instead of Glasswire. I'll message Grinler to get the description changed on BleepingComputer.

I wasn't really sure where to post this question but figured here was a good place to start....

I have just received a new laptop at work. It is set up to run on our internal network. Through this network we have acces to the internet and an intranet, and a whole host of shared applications. When used off the network we can get email and use microsoft office. Nothing else works. There are also a whole host of restirctions set up so that nothing can be changed unless you are a network administrator. I can't even change my screensaver let alone install any new programs.

Being as its such a nice new shiny piece of kit I would like to get full use out of it and so was wondering, since it has a slide out hard drive, would I be able to buy a second hard drive and install a different operating system on this. The situation I would like is to have it as a work PC (running win 2000) but then on a weekend take out the hard drive and put mine in (running XP) and use it as my own PC with my own programs and broadband access etc.

Is this possible or are there other settings within the PC that would prevent this? Or is the setup of the PC purely held within the data on the hard drive?

Hope this makes sense, and thanks in advance for any help.

You should talk to your system adminstrator on this matter. Obviously restrictions are set for a reason, trying to bypass these are not something we here a TSF support.

Hello folks

Just joined so "hi!", a colleague overseas sent me a a link here and said I might find the help I need.

I have a Fujitsu Siemens laptop running Vista Home Premium 32 bit (I think) and it won't boot up correctly. It's got 1gb of RAM, and, so I'm told, a SATA HDD. I was surfing the net, left it running for a few mins whilst I put my daughter to bed, when I came back it was rebooting, and it said 'cannot find operating system' on the screen. A friend with a little knowledge has said the HDD is OK as it will try to repair itself using the repair disc that came with the machine, however it's not repairing properly. I've been through the turorials 148, 147 and 142 in that order, but to no avail.

When I get to the 'System Recovery Screen' as seen on Figure 4 in tutorial 148 there is nothing in the box under Operating System. When I try the advanced options, as seen in Figure 9, none of them work- there is no system restore available. I've reset the BIOS to default, not that I recall changing anything.

I'm a bit stuck as to what to try next. I'm not an expert by any means but I'm familiar with some of the processes, not all the terminology. The laptop is under warranty but I've been told that it will take 4 weeks to repair. I don't want to wait this long, and to be honest I'm not comfortable with it being away for so long- there's some sensitive commercial data on it, plus a few passwords stored in Firefox for different accounts (not my bank!... A:Laptop Cannot Find Operating System

If startup repair doesn't recognize a hard drive, then it can't run any of it's repairs on the hard drive (to include chkdsk) - so it's either the hard drive that's dead or a more serious problem with the computer.I'd suggest running a test on the hard drive to see if it's dead. They're usually free from the manufacturer of the hard drive. In the event that you have a Fujitsu hard drive in your Fujitsu laptop, here's a link to it: http://www.fujitsu.com/us/services/computi.../utilities.htmlYou'll have to download the program and follow their directions for making a bootable DOS disk (and you'll have to use the DOS version of the test). In the event that the hard drive is dead, you'll need another hard drive of the same capacity or bigger, and you'll have to know if it's SATA (2 black connectors) or IDE (40 little gold pins). Then you'll need your Vista DVD and any other DVD's that may have come with the computer.

I have a Sony laptop, I formatted and reloaded Windows XP onto it without a problem, turned it off and when I came back to it and turned it on it came up with the above message. I then carried out a repair install of windows, which again went OK, then I loaded SP2, which again went OK, but when I restarted the pc it came up with the same error again.
I am a little confused as it happily booted onto the desktop after loading windows but as soon as I turn it off and back on again it throws up the message. If it was a hard drive problem I would expect problems with loading windows but that goes OK.
Any suggestions from you guys?

A:Operating system not found on laptop

Usually, this is a hard drive error, where one or more of the first four boot sectors has its magnetic media peeling up. Thus it will load OK, but cannot read the boot sectors to start up, due to the tiny error set. It doesn't take much.
This happens on laptops more frequently than desktops. I suspect this is because the Sony laptops, and others in which it happens are too thin, and air cooling channels are too narrow. The hard drive just gets too hot and the extremely thin magnetic coating fluffs off.
Best test is to try another hard drive now. You can get refurb Seagates at www.tigerdirect.com and others... or new WD and Seagates at a low price and with a long warranty at www.zipzoomfly.com or www.directron.com

Be sure to use canned air to clean our your Sony air channels about once a month..

On Sunday, I was using my laptop and this came up on my screen (http://i.imgur.com/IYjFfrn.jpg) After my laptop restarted, I used it for about 5 minutes before it froze. When i next used my laptop, It stayed on the Toshiba screen (the first screen when the laptop is turned on). After about 3 or 4 minutes, the laptop opens the automatic repair feature and this comes up on the screen (http://i.imgur.com/wUTtgRn.jpg). I have tried tapping both F8 and F12 throughout start up to try and repair the computer although this doesnt work either. I have opened the boot menu and tried to select the HDD Recovery option although it says no bootable media, please restart system. Any help here? Thanks

A:Laptop won't start up operating system.

Hi,
sorry for the delay in responding when you get to that screen where it says " your pc needs to be repaired" that the 2nd screen you showed ( the one you call automatic repair) you need to press the esc key, then you will get to another screen select troubleshoot and then refresh this will then fix windows and hopefully not get rid of your data. However it cannot be guaranteed.

good luck

A:Wipe laptop but not operating system

Welcome to TSG, goodyl.

The easiest way would be to run Dell's system recovery feature. This would restore the computer to the factory conditions and settings. The Directions Start at step 3, on this link to Dell's website. Reimaging the computer should be enough so that most casual computer users will not be able to access any previous personal information, but the only 100% way to be sure would be to remove the hard drive and destroy it.

Hi tjones27, and welcome to TSG.

The CD that you are using may be trying to set up hardware that was on the computer it was designed for and hanging when it can not find it. Unless you can find a recovery disk for that particular computer, you will need to buy a full version of Windows to install on it.

Did you go into the BIOS and change the boot priority? It still sounds to me like it is trying to boot from the hard drive. Try pressing F1, F2, or DEL to get into the BIOS, once in there change the first boot to CD-ROM, then second boot to HDD. Post back if this helps.

Hi. My grand childs laptop has just died for some reason, it's a Samsung NP-R20, he says it refused to start so he brought it to me as I have had to reinstall the OS a couple of times, but I have not come a cross this before.
You turn the laptop on and it takes a while for the Samsung logo to display, then after a long wait it then displays, operating system cannot be found, you cannot get into the Bios menu as it is not shown when the Samsung logo is displayed you get, press f2 for setup, which when you press shows nothing, and f12 for network boot but nothing for getting into bios, also you cannot get into safemode. I tried a Windows XP cd to do a repair install but get the error message, that it has prevented a serious opperation and stoped the XP cd from loading.I took the hard drive out and connected it to my own Pc but it was no reconised in my bios or in my computer. I also took the hard drive and memory out and replaced it but still the same problem. I thought it might be a hard drive problem, but before I buy a new one I would like some advice as could it also be a motherboard problem as it is not showing the bios menu.
Thanks for any help in advance Dave.

Hi, I have a Win 8.1 laptop without a disk drive which also did not come with a cd of operating system. What software, preferably free, can I use to copy my operating system to USB in case I ever need to reinstall Win 8.1?
How do I just copy the operating system without all the software I have added since acquiring this laptop?
Thanks for any suggestions.

A:Win 8.1 Laptop Clone or Imiage Operating System on USB

How do I just copy the operating system without all the software

As far as I know, there is no way to just copy the OS.

My recommendation, based on my own experience, is to install Macrium Reflect and use that to image off your Win 8.1 install to an external drive. Choose the option to "Create an image of the partition(s) required to backup and restore Windows". That will ensure all the necessary partitions are included in the backup.

And, if you are going to use the free version, use the option to create and burn a Linux Boot CD. That will allow you to boot into it to do a full image restore -- should you need to do that later.

Hi guys, sorry if I've posted this in the wrong section, this is my first time here on the forums

A couple of days ago, I went to boot up my Sony Vaio laptop, which has Windows Vista Home installed on it, and I got a message on the start up screen saying that the operating system couldn't be found. I was on my way to work that day and havent had time to have a look at it since.

Now, when I try to boot up, all I get is a blank screen. If i try to press F12 or anything, the computer just beeps at me.

I had trouble about 2 weeks ago when booting it up and it made a weird whirring sound, so I started it up in safe mode then re-started it and it ran fine.

As far as I can remember, I didnt get any Windows CD's or DVDs with the laptop, it came with Vista Home already installed and I dont think it came with a quick restore or any kind of recovery software.

I've just moved house and still have some things in boxes, so I'll see if I can find the information that came with my laptop when I bought it 2 years ago and see if there were any CD's or anything.

As far as I can remember, I hadn't installed anything new or changed any settings in the days leading up to it crashing.

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much

:)

Hi, My old laptop was running very slowly so decided to to a "reset", the big reset that deleted my old files and apps etc.  My laptop originally had Windows 7, but about a year ago I upgraded to Window 10 - which i regret as it slowed my laptop down terribly/ Half way through the reset the screen read that it was unable to do a reset, it gave me the option to try again, so I did and a while later it stated again that is was unable to complete reset and gave me the option to cancel, so I did.   This morning I try to turn my laptop on and got a message that is couldn't find an operating system on my hard drive, it had an error msg, which I failed to write down it also directed me to visit HP.com techsupport. I followed a reboot video, which said to remove battery, replace, turn back on holding F10... nothing happened other than the laptop beeped for a long time and the screen reads that an operating system wasn't found, Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart, when I do that I get the same screen back again. Please help Thanks

Can you turn the laptop upside down, and remove a "cover", to view the top of the disk-drive?The date of manufacture, the name of the manufacturer, the model-number, and the serial-number should be visible. What are the values? Please do NOT post the serial-number here.Instead, access the manufacturer's web-site (www.westerndigital.com or www.seagate.com or ...) and look for a "check warranty" web-page.  Use that page to get more information about the disk-drive.

A:Can't boot up laptop, operating system missing

Im going to take a wild guess that your hard drive is failing or has failed and that the computer isnt recognizing the drive at all.to replace a cd drive isnt that expensive.i hope you didnt have anything on there that you can afford to lose like pix, music, or important documents. since its a dell laptop you might want to take out the drive and if it hasnt completely failed try to retrieve any thing you can before it goes for good.on laptops the drives are easy to remove and if you have a usb sata/ide connector you can hook it up to a working computer to save the important data.

Hey folks, thanks a ton in advance for any help or suggestions given. I guess my old account was deleted, but I previously joined/donated for some help received. Regardless, I have a friends Acer laptop I am attempting to help her restore as usable. Acer Aspire 6930Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T5800 (2.0GHz, 800MHz FSB, 2 MB L2 cache)1244MB Mobile Graphics Accelerator 4500MHD3 GB DDR2320GB HDDWindows VistaWhen you boot it, it pretty much stays in the boot screen.....does no more. She got the computer from Best Buy, and they set up 3 recover disks. When you try to run the 1st of 3, I select the language....then a prompt comes up to ask me what I want to do. As you can see below, I cannot select "restore from backup". I then click to "restore to default" and then I get this error message......I searched the error message, and found others who've experienced the exact same issue. What they discovered is that the computer would not utilize the recovery disks if there was an existing partition. So the folks with the same problem as I, downloaded the Ultimate Boot Disk to recover their computers. When I do that, I got a message in BIOS saying "No operating system found".This whole message....I can follow directions very well, and I am a fairly familiar with computers....but not enough to solve this one. I appreciate anyones time thrown in to try and find a fix or a final resolution (if the HD is fubar). Darren

I?m using a 3D cadcam package to run a cnc machine tool. It?s a 2009 version and will run on nothing newer than windows vista as an operating system. I have looked at second hand systems but would rather locate a new machine. Can anyone help? I'm looking for a 17? laptop that comes with Windows V

A:Modern laptop required with a vista operating system.

Welcome to the forum. The simple answer is to get any pc and then run Vista under free virtual box as this will run any o/s its simple to do lots of support and free so you can have a fast modern pc with latest windows and use it for cad when needed It maybe the only way to do it as you may have problems getting drivers for vista for a modern pc this way its better as you get more power for cad and VB has all the drivers for vista etc. https://www.virtualbox.org/

Hi,
I have an Acer Travelmate 4200 that got a drink spilled on it last night. It spilled all over the keyboard, so we took apart the top section of the keyboard to clean it out and dried it upside down last night to get any remaining liquid out.

Now the computer will not load. The green power light comes on and it acts like it is trying to read the DVD drive but then it does nothing. The fan comes on as well. But no screen or anything else.

Please help, this computer has the research for a thesis and it is very crucial to school.

Thanks.

A:Acer Laptop wont start operating system now!!!!

Aparently you have tried to make the laptop as dry as possible, but things can still be fried inside it. I am afraid the latter is the case and that you will have to opt for a waranty claim, although water damage usually isn't covered in that.

To recover the data I suggest to remove the harddisk and put it in or connect it to another laptop... but bottomline is that I think your laptop is lost :-(

Every time I restart my laptop on a docking station, I get an error saying missing operating system. When I take the laptop off the docking station and reboot from there, it works fine.

A:Docking Station laptop Missing Operating System

Does your docking station contain a hard drive, or a hard drive bay? How about an external drive connected?

Boot it from the docking station and check the BIOS boot order.

Hi I have a Sony laptop model PCG-38CP, when I turn it on, all I get is a black screen and message "Operating system not found". I went into F2 mode, checked under the Boot section and the hard drive is listed there, but even after making it first in the line, still the error message persists. Checked the bottom of lappy for possible loose connection, all seems intact. Tried F10 or F11, all I get is an annoying beeping noise and back to the error message. Am I correct to assume that I will need to re-install the OS? It was Win XP Pro. Should I get the proper full OS cd or just a recovery disk? BTW, this laptop was just a hand me down so I don't mind nor care if any data will be wiped out in the process.

Here is the deal about a month ago a nasty virus hit up my computer a dell latitude d830. I removed the virus and everything was fine that next day via webroot. The next day my laptop was locked. I could start up but my keyboard and mouse wouldn’t work. I sent it back to where I bought my laptop. I just got it back not to long ago, lost all my documents etc and got my laptop wiped clean. The virus was removed and I checked and there isn’t anything on the laptop as it relates to the viruses. My new problem is shutting down my laptop. I have XP for the operating system. I will I will go to start, etc to shut it down. It will start and all that will remain is the desktop background and you can move the mouse. The laptop will just sit there. The only way to shut it down is to hit the power button. Or start it up and if I select shut down on the log in for the password, it will shut down.
Please help!

A:laptop lags on shutdown, using XP operating system for dell d830

Hi and welcome.
There can be many reason for a slow, sticking shutdown.
It is usually cause by a program, application, driver not shutting correctly.

Check what is running in the task bar.
Try shutting one of them down at a time [right click the icon - exit program]
Then shut down your Pc.

Check Task Manager [right click task bar] and see what is using the most resources.
End that program and then shutdown your Pc.

Hi,

I have a HP laptop that had Windows 7 installed on it, one day i got a message saying there were updates available, which included Service pack 1. So, i went ahead with the install however, when my system rebooted after the install there was an error message (i cant remember what it said, it was a while ago) so i immediately tried to put my windows 7 disk in, which would not boot. I have gone into bios and changed it so that it was the first boot item but still didn't work, even with F8, F12 etc. So i decided to borrow a recovery disk from a friend, it is a general one of the internet, i went through the repair options which didn't work, so i decided to format the hard drive which was successful. So now when you boot, as you would expect, you get a no operating system message. I try to put my Windows 7 disk back in to install it fresh but it still wont work, its like theres nothing in the cd drive. What am i doing wrong?? I am quite good with computers but have no idea about this, is it a problem with the disk? I have tried it in another machine and it works as it should. Can anyone help?

Thanks!!

A:Solved: laptop formatted, operating system wont install

make sure bios is still set to boot from cd drive first

make sure disk is clean
