hard drive shows full. Checking file size indicates it is not

Q: hard drive shows full. Checking file size indicates it is not

I'm trying to defrag an external hard drive, 120gb. However I keep getting an error that I need 5% space to defrag.
I have moved various files onto a partitioned drive, but the drive has not changed in respect of used disk space. The files left constitute only 80GB. I have checked for temp files, none there.
there are only two files left one of 60GB & one 19GB, both of which I don't want to delete & cant move to my partitioned drive.
What am I doing wrong, how can I fix this.
Cheers.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a Dell Inspiron Laptop Win XP Home edition, 80 gb Hard drive, The hard drive shows 71 gb used and 8 gb free, When I do a count of all used space I come up with 8 gb used and 71 free.

I have ran Windows Defender, Avast, McaFee, and Reg Fix programs all to no avail.

I have defragged, removed file compression, ran chkdsk /f, looked in to all temp folders and removed all files, examined all log files I can not find a problem.

Does anybody have a suggestion for me to try next. I am now thinking I may have a corrupt hard drive.

A:Hard drive shows full when it is not.

When it comes to hard drive space you need to understand there is "administrative overhead" for each file on the drive. So there is a difference between drive physical size and available freespace. With 71gb on an 80gb HD, you ARE out of freespace.

There is a very nice tool to show you your actual hard drive status, WinDirStat (freeware).

Look at the screenshot using WinDirStat, note it has been customized to show freespace and I disabled the other "maps."

Notice the difference in the Size of C: and Free Space.

To help free-up HD space:You should run Disk Cleanup in the System Tools menu at least every other month, just do not delete compressed files
You should Defrag your HD, your problem is you don't have enough space to do this, it will fail.
Try a 3rd-party Update Cleanup tool (see suggestion below) to remove the backup files for old updates that you know are OK. I suggest keeping just a year's worth.
Look at Add/Remove Programs for entries on JAVA, remove all but the latest (see comment below)

Update Cleanup tool: Update Cleanup (shareware)
This will remove the backup files use to Remove updates and the Add/Remove Programs entries WITHOUT touching the update logs so Win Update will still see them as installed. Once updates have been on your system for a a long time without any problems, you are not going to be removing them. So you don't need the backup files hogging HD space.

Hello,

A friend of mine has a strange problem. He just bought a Lenovo 3000 laptop with windows vista on it, and a hard drive of 80 GB.
A few days after he bought the computer, the hard drive started to show that it's more and more full, and after a few days it got completely full. But he didn't put anything new on it during these few days. I looked at the content of the hard drive with spacemonger, and it showed that the disk is really full. But when we calculated how much was space was actually occupied, it was only about 40 GB (10 GB vista stuff, 10 GB music, 20 GB pictures, a little bit of documents). I made some space by disabling hibernation and deleting some pics and music, but after a few days the disk got full again.
I reformatted the hard drive (only one on this computer) and installed everything fresh: thunderbird, firefox, office 2007, endnote, ccleaner, nod32. There was 40 GB free. A few days later and no new additions or installations, the hard drive is full again!!!
Anti virus/spyware scan is clean.
What could be the problem?

Thanks...

here's your system requirements for Vista OS. So once read it appears you would need a total of 55 Gigs just to run the program. Memory suggested is at least 1 Gig. Is this a new computer with Vista installed? They sure didn't leave much in the way of a hard drive to work with. Have you gone onto the Vista site and downloaded the program they have to check your system specs and determine whether it's a good OS for this computer? Maybe someone else knows something more but that is the best I can do. There are other forums here that deal with Microsoft Vista and you might have better luck posting there. Let us know...Jazz

Sorry this will be a long tale.
I have just installed a Liteon CD burner and now have probs with HD. I have 2 HD's, No1 is 3.2 gig. No2 is 8.4 gig. No1 WAS partitioned as 'C' & 'E' No2 is 'D'.
I installed Nero & other s/ware that came with the burner & then started getting warnings of system files missing. I keep an image of 'C' so I restored that to disk No1. When I checked on the system I'm NOW showing 'C' as 501 Meg and NO 'E' drive. When I go into bios it shows correctly as 3.2 gig but when I R/click on the drive icon & select properties it shows as 501 meg only.
When I run Drive Image it shows 'C' as 501 Meg with a partition of 1 Meg and an asterisk where the drive letter usually is.
Any help of a not TOO technical would be greatly appreciated.

I cloned my 40 Gig hard drive onto a 160 Gig one with HDClone and everything went fine. I tested each out in another machine and they both seemed to work fine. However, I currently have the 160 Gig hooked up by itself and it's still reading it as only 40 (actually, 37.2) Gigs. What happened?

Some background:

The PC I normally use is a Compaq Presario 6000 with a 40 Gig HD. I have a newer Compaq, a Presario S6500NX with a 160 Gig HD that has a busted power supply. I took the 160 and plugged it in to my PC as a Slave and wiped it clean successfully (I didn't, however do anything to the pins. I just connected the proper cables) . Then I used HD Clone to clone my 40 Gig to that one, which also was successful. I took the 40 out so I could test the 160 and it worked fine. Then I put the 40 into the other machine along with the power supply and it recognized a bunch of new hardware from the new machine and also worked fine. Not wanting to use the smaller drive, I switched it out with the 160. Now it still works, but it's only reading it as a 40.

Why did this happen and how do I fix it?

I tried to "extend volume" from win7 disk manager but the option is greyed out. I don't want to create a new drive letter, just want my existing C drive to reclaim alll of the unallocated stuff.

How can I do this? Thanks.

Hi !

47 MB OEM partition, But what is the 3.33 GB primary partition ?

About the 411 MB unallocated , you download Partition Wizard Bootable CD , burn it in a cd , and boot from it . Choose 1 for resolution . Now when it shows your drive partitions , you select the unallocated space and create a new partition there (If you want to use it as your data partition , format it as logical) .

If there is any further query , please inform . Post back with results

I am running Vista Home Premium on a HP Pavilion Entertainment PC. I have a 160Gb hard drive with 86Gb of free space. I have been trying to build a mapset for my Garmin GPS in Garmins Mapsource program. The program compiles the mapset ok but cannot save the file because the system says the hard drive is full. I have saved this file on this computer before and it worked ok. How do I get rid of the hard drive full error?

A:Cannot save file due to hard drive full error

It may be a simple case of temporary folder space. A cleaning of temp folders is where I would start.

Here is a link for CCleaner:

http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/

One time I could not get a well known Firewall & Antivirus package to install. It turns out it crashed because it requires >2GB of space in the temporary folders which was not available. A cleaning fixed that.

I hope this is all it is, if not, have you looked at the compiler's log file? What about Event Viewer?

I'm trying to write a program that detects file sizes of online images..

So far I've tried to use FileLen to achive this and found out:
1.) It doesn't seem to be possible to get it to work with online files

2.) It doesn't seem to work if you set it to look at an imported image
(eg: Image1.Picture = LoadPicture("C:\Test.jpg")
Text1.Text = FileLen.Image1)

And i'd rather not download the files or use Winsocks unless i REALLY have to,
I am trying to run it to check over 10,000 images so downloading is not really a great option for me

Any help?

I went to SSDs on all of my computers some time back, but I still use WD RE4s and 2.5 inch WD Black HDDs for a variety of backup tasks and for storage in which the data will not be accessed for a period longer than is ideal to use a non-powered SSD for. On my Macs I am using El Capitan with OS X Journeled, GUID map, and FileVault 2 encryption. On my SP3 and desktop I am using NTFS with Win 10 64-bit Pro with BitLocker enabled on both machines. The OS and third party programs are currently up to date.

I've generally used ExFAT and the GPT partition map because it allows me to use it on all of my computers, and I have always used the default cluster size. However, I do not think the default size was the best decision for me because the size on disk is over TWICE the actual size.

If I am correct, the default Win 10 cluster size is 4k, and that going BELOW that is useful for the drives I have many smaller files on. Is this correct? Additionally, the smaller cluster size I go, the slower the drive will write, correct? Also, if so, how low do you advise going? I am still torn between reformatting outright or trying one of the programs that allows changes to a currently in-use drive. Any advice? Thanks!

A:Hard drive cluster size issues? Size on HDD over twice the actual size

For the a sector size of 4k to double your disk utilization you'd have to have a really tiny average file size. From your numbers shown the average size if I calculate it correct is 132kb (unless you have 1 massive file and 17,711 tiny ones) so a 4k size will make no difference.

You could check with TreeSize Free - it will tell you if you right click on the status bar and select it to be displayed.

EDIT - having checked the default for ExFat is 128k for drives over 32GB (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/140365) and when I tried to format an external USB drive that is what it picked. According to macbook - Reformat exFat with specific Device Block Size and Cluster Size - Ask Different OSX picks 128k also.

So if you had 128k as your cluster size minimum disk utilization would be 17,772 files * 128k = 2.17GB. So if all your files were just over this (say 132k which looks like your current average size) you would be using 4.44GB add a couple of big files and it could easily be 6GB.

I would check your average file sizes and also your current cluster size (you can use chkdsk as described in the AskDifferent link above).

The default is 4k for NTFS and I have always formatted ExFat as 4k also. Depending on your current setting reformatting 4k looks like a good idea.

As for how - copying the data elsewhere, formatting and then copying it back has to be the easiest, safest and most likely fastest way. You'll also get the disk defragmented automatical... Read more

Hi All,
Been doing a lot of searches for this issue over the last few days and can find a solution to fix it(re create wmp database) but no mention of why this occurs

The main reason I want to use WMP is because it has playcounts, so after I have copied some media files I can see what hasn't been watched/listened too (going through my dvd collection and converting to digital)

a lot of files are on my old machine (Mac) so I copy them over and correct the metadata to make sure it's correct, few hours later I look at wmp shows the file size as 0 bytes (actual file is correct in explorer)

Is there anything I can do to avoid this (rebuilding library loses playcounts so don't want to keep doing this)?
or should I totally ignore playcounts and use the new metro style video app?

This seem like an issue that has been going on for years, but cannot find anything about a way to avoid it happening

A:WMP shows file size as 0 bytes

Hello paulsalter,

As you are aware, this does happen often; especially if you have a large number of files to be indexed. Why? Who knows? But I have a rep waiting for anyone that can provide a definite fix. You are not alone on this one.

No file is hidden. I tried formatting and using different machines (and a phone).
If the files are not there, how come 3 computers shows the size correctly on the drive; if the files are there, where are they?

Hi guys, thanks ahead of time first off. This is odd, just tonight I got on Google Image Search and noticed that after showing all the thumbnails, once a thumbnail is clicked upon, it takes me right to the page without ever showing that 1 inch deep tab at the top it usually would stating "View Image in Full Size" and image my be copyrighted etc.... I have never seen this before. I rebooted the comp and it still does the same thing. I used system restore to a week ago and that solved the problem bringing the bar back LoL....but I had to undo it as the resotre caused a problem with my McAfee Antivirus! Arghhh....
Is this a simple settings thing I can fix? I am curious if it's a Google thing or an Internet Explorer 7 thing... I have Windows XP and its a Dell computer. On our other older computer it comes up normal with the bar as it always would on this one. I am not terrible computer literate but try my best. You guys always help out, so I appreciate this very much.

Thanks a ton again,

Now where the extra space go ? I dont understand this. And I enabled to view all the hidden files and folders, . Can someone help me out ?

When windows downloads updates it creates restore points which is stored on the c drive. You might have made some your self at one time or another, these wouldn't show up because they are hidden. To clear these out you need to go in to control and then system. Click advanced settings and then click the system protection tab. You can clear out the restore points from there but keep in mind that you won't have any restore points so if anything goes wrong you won't have a restore point to go back to.

System details,

I have a 500GB external hard-drive and Windows Vista is currently telling me it is full. When I check the hard-drive properties in Explorer it also shows up as very close to full. However when I select all folders on the hard-drive and check properties the size is only approx half. i.e 216GB

The drive system is NTFS and I have made sure in "Folder Options/View" that hidden files and folders are shown.

Does anyone have an idea what this could be ?

A:System Image disks installed on new hard drive show new hard drive same size as old one

You have to be logged in as Admin to perform these operations.
Go to Start, and in the Search box, type in DISK MANAGEMENT. Pick the Control Panel item "Create and format disk partitions." Once Disk Management comes up, right-click on the area of your disk and select "Extend volume..." Move it out
as far as you want, making the whole thing one drive.
If that doesn't work for you, then you can download Easeus Partition Manager Home
http://www.partition-tool.com/personal.htm  and create a boot CD from it that will accomplish the same thing (and more, if you want to read up on it). It's a free program and works
with 32- and 64-bit Windows. I like it and use it myself.

I've got a hard disk in my laptop partitioned into to two.

After a year of good service, my laptop is now, from time to time during use, displaying 'disk full' type messages when trying to save a file (Word) or unzip a file (Winrar) and things like that.

I can still access files on the disk, just not write to it, although the problem when it is occurring seems to be intermittent.

The disks aren't full and have over 10% free. When I restart Windows the problem goes away.

I'm guessing there is something wrong with the disk?

Any ideas on how to check for errors/problems or solve this?

properties show shared partition has 18GB of 931GB available. I cannot find any file larger that 2GB on this partition and my estimate is that no more that 50GB of space is consumed by the files visible on the disk.

I believe I have settings configured to view all hidden and system files. I cannot find anything close to the 913GB which properties reports is used.

What settings should I be looking for ..

to confirm the disk is properly formatted
to confirm that I have access to the entire partition
to find files which may remain hidden

Thanks

A:2TB drive partitioned in 2 equal halves. One half shows near full but has under 50GB

The 2TB drive is an internal HD which was added to the system for data storage purposes. The OS remains on the original HD which shipped with system.

can I check a hard drive taken from a 486 that was giving
a bad controller error at boot and put it in a running pentium 111 to find out if it is ok?It will be going in a pc running wind98se and is it best to keep the hard drives
on the same chain?

You could slave it in your PC now, and change it in your BIOS to boot off of it and see what happens.

I put four 1TB hard drives into a RAID 5. My RAID controller shows the total RAID size as 3TB (as I would expect), but Disk Management only sees the disk size as 2047.84 GB rather than the ~2794 that I would expect. The OS (Windows 7 Enterprise) is installed on a separate physical drive (Disk 0 - 150GB), and I converted the RAID 5 drive (Disk 1) from MBR to GPT.

I'm not sure what else to do; I've tried everything I can possibly think of within Disk Management (including the CLI), but I'm not sure any of that matters since it doesn't even recognize that the drive is larger than 2TB. I'm thinking it's hardware related, some disconnect between the RAID controller and the OS, but I don't know what. The PC was home built, probably about 5.5 years ago, so a little old, but not bad.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Sean

I removed the harddrive from my other XP Pro tower, its a Maxtor 100 gb PATA 133 HDD & would like to know how to hook it up to the tower I'm on now to possible remove some tunes & pictures.
Picture attached

A:Checking out a Maxtor hard drive

Well, you do the opposite of what you did on the XP tower.

1. Secure the the HDD in the HDD bay.
2. Connect the power and IDE cables to the HDD
3. Power up your PC and check the BIOS to see if your HDD is being detected.

BUT FIRST, you might want to check the jumper setting on the Maxtor, to make it a Slave drive.

If the HDD was the only (or primary) drive in the XP tower, chances are it is configured as the Master drive, which will of course cause a conflict in your current tower.

this guide shows the jumper settings for your HDD:

Hello,

I have a 3 yr old Samsung laptop which I thought was behaving properly. Today, Outlook froze and then as I tried to open other programs, each thing froze as well. I left it alone and things eventually sorted themselves out and the computer became functional again.

I looked in Event Viewer and I am seeing a LOT of disk warnings and errors, going all the way back to March. That's as far back as it goes, to the date when I installed Windows 10. (Laptop came with Windows 8 installed, I upgraded to 8.1 and then to 10.) This is in Hard Disk 0, which contains Drive C and several recovery drives.

The errors are mentioning ominous things such as "bad block", so the first thing I would like to do is actually see if the physical hard drive itself is failing. In looking at Settings, I see no indication that it is, it says the drive is healthy.

I've seen reference to software called CrystalDisk, but I would like to be assured of a safe download site for that, or is there other software someone here can recommend?

Thanks.

Hi.
The first thing you should do is run CHKDSK on your drive.
Drive Error Checking in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums

Then you can download and install PassMark DiskCheckup, to see the values of the SMART attributes. Let it run for a bit so the numbers can settle in.

I've used Crystal Disk Info, and it's good, but it tends to install other garbage, so you have to be cautious.... Read more

Is there any (free) software out there that can check the health of my hard drive. I want to set up a dual boot system but I wanna check the physical integrity of my drives first. My secondary hard drive is a 4 year old 120 gb western digital. The reason I ask is that every once in a while, i hear small clicks which I think are coming from that hd. It hasnt happened in months but it has started up again today.

My primary HDD was failing so I backed it up and replaced it with a larger 1TB drive.  After reinstalling everything the new drive is displaying the same size as my old drive and the extra space available is unallocated.  I can allocate it as
a separate drive but I find that annoying and would prefer to just have my primary C: drive show up with all of the available space.  I formatted the extra space and made it available separately as drive G hoping that I could EXPAND drive C but that option
is not highlighted as selectable on drive C for some reason.  Should I just live with this extra space or is there a way to easily combine C and the new G space?

Hello and welcome Kishor now I have gut feeling that drive night have been damaged by the sudden power failure it could have affected the platters themselves or the controller unit.
Now I think you need to test the drive using this SeaTools for Windows | Seagate or a purely physical surface test see this Best Free Partition Manager Freeware and free partition magic for Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Vista and Windows XP 32 bit & 64 bit. MiniTool Free Partition Manager Software Home Edition. run it and see my pic on how to set that up. It tests the actual surface of the platters and to some extent the ability of the read / write heads.

Hi Gang
I have an older Optiplex 790 (which stands straight up - not on its side). I'm looking to find out which sata port is the correct port for the SYSTEM Drive, (not the 2nd storage drive port). Sorry I removed both drives, (one system drive and 2nd storage drive) for transport, (I moved). Now I'm getting the system back together. BTW one of the sata cables has a piece of 'OEM Blue Tape' tagged to one end.
Thanx for your help!

One of the SATA ports will have a blue connector on the mainboard.  That's the first SATA channel, usually used for the boot drive.

I have an nVidia 570 SLI based motherboard and the SATA drivers seem to make all my drives show up as SCSI (or fibre channel in Everst), and as such I can't check the SMART status to get the temp. And since I've just got a new case and a third hard drive (which are all stacked quite close) I have no idea if the temps are within the ideal limits.

This worked fine in XP because the drives were showing up as IDE. Does anyone know of a way to check the temps in Vista with this board? Other than booting into something like UBCD...

Look closely at all the utilities on the Western Digital website... They can be helpful in testing and diagnoses.

Is the WD 1 TB a Green, Blue, or Black... The Green is known as having reliability problems and the Blue is not far behind.

Hi.

I was going to make a copy of my hard drive but first I would like to make sure that there is no malware infecting my computer.

The other day after Avast did a quick scan it found nothing wrong but said some files could not be scanned and gave this message.

C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download\Install\mpas-d_bd_1.147.471.0.exe     Error:The system can not find the path specified(3)

This has not happened since.  Also the recently a message popped up about something requesting something, all I saw was my internet service providers name and a string of characters, it was gone before I saw more.  I have not seen anything like this before.  The internet might be a bit slow too but it's hard to be sure.

I have done scans with Malwarebytes and Hitman pro as well as my AV Avast.  All come back clear.

Thanks for any help you can offer.  Here is the DDS log

i have a notebook, Toshiba that I recently had the LCD monitor screen and keyboard replaced under my extended warranty as both parts had flaws.
My notebook was purchased in May 2003 and the warranty expires May 2006 and it is with Toshiba itself.
It has been great dealing with them, bring in the notebook for a test and then the diagnosis is made and i take it back to work and bring it in to them when the parts are at the Warranty depot.
This replacement of the 2 aforementioned parts took 45 minutes and then I left with the notebook and it is working fine.

While there and the Tech was doing the work, I mentioned that I use Perfect Disk 7 to Defrag and that I now over the past few months have 110 Excess fragments in c:\$BadClus.$ and it is in the Meta data.
The tech said it may be the hard drive. My notebook was purchased in 2003 and has a 40 gig hard drive and 1.9 ghz, 512 RAM, Intel Pent 4, Mobile processor.

I have a Ghost Image on an external Western Digital Drive. The tech from Toshiba said to make sure my Ghost is uptodate as he will have to test it for corrupt files/bad drive and that will wipe the drive clean.

I was wondering if there is a tool UNLIKE Windows Chkdsk thatwould check thoroughly the surface of the drive and not attempt to fix it if there are problems which in the attempt to repair of course could corrupt my data.

I merely wanted to do a thorough surface check and see if there was a report that indicated that files were corrupted.
And most of all I did n... Read more

This happens every single time and I think it needs to stop. The entire process takes about 10 seconds but that adds up on the loading time. I could not jot down the whole logs as it is so fast. Any one experience this?
