Adding an mSATA SSD to a Y580 ideapad

Q: Adding an mSATA SSD to a Y580 ideapad

My original HD is going bad so I decided to buy a new HD and an mSATA SSD. I've read more forums and watched more videos then I would have liked and I still can't find anything that can walk me through this. I want my mSATA to be configured like my original HD with a C: and D: partition and it to be able to run one button recovery and everything else that the original HD was able to do. Then I want the replacement disk HD to be just for storage. My computer did not come with an mSATA originally. It does have Intel Rapid Storage Technology but I can not find RapidTool.exe which some of the forums say is needed.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

If your old HD is still operating, you should be able to clone it using the steps shown below. Be warned that you must clone the whole drive, including all the hidden partitions, and can only resize the Windows Partition or the OKR recovery will not work, so the new m.2 SSD must be large enough to hold the entire contents of all the partitions of your existing HD drive. Use Windows Drive Manager to view the sizes of the other parititons on your HD> If you need to make room, back up all your data and then delete from the current OS drive partition before cloning. http://www.laptopmag.com/articles/install-m2-ssd-lenovo-t440s Read this thread as well, it points out some important rules that must be followed when cloning so thaat OKR will work afterwards.https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-P-Y-and-Z-series/Enable-onekey-recovery-after-HDD-to-SSD-cloning... Hello, As stated in the title, I have a Lenovo IdeaPad y580. I purchased it approximately three-and-a-half years ago, and only now is it really beginning to chug durings its processes. Point is, I want it to last perhaps another half year or so while I finish saving up for another computer. As a gamer, I'm fine with the limitations of the GPU, but sometimes my laptop legitimately has issues processing stuff, such as loading Google Chrome properly. I know enough about Windows to clean out viral matter and uninstall programs that I don't use that are running in the back. But does anyone have any tips or tricks to make this hunk of junk last maybe six more months before it becomes unusable?TL;DR I need to make my laptop run at least a reasonably sub-average to average level for six more months. Any tips are appreciated.

Hey everyone, I have a question regarding my Ideapad Y580 and a strange sound error I have been experiencing over the past few months. Windows 8.1 Pro w/ Media Centeri7 3630QM8GB RAMGTX660M500GB Samsung EVO 840 Ok here's the sound issue.  After using a program such as Minecraft, VLC, Nightingale, the sound will completely cut out.  When checking volumes, sound will not register.  Oftentimes, the sound control panel will say the device is busy. Things I've tried so far:1) Disabled Realtek Digital Output2) Installed latest driver3) Checked current processes for remnants of programs using the sound card.. nothing. Sometimes when I have one of the programs open, for example playing minecraft, when I start a video in VLC, there will be no sound.  The only sound comes from the game. The only thing that really restores the audio is a full restart of the system.  Logging out and back in will not restore the sound.Has anyone experienced this issue?  Is there a way to fix this problem?  Thanks guys!

A:Ideapad Y580 sound cutting out

One suggestion..... have you tried uninstalling the audio driver, reboot the computer and then install a fresh copy of the driver.  If the previous driver installation was faulty, installing the latest driver may have not corrected the problem.

Does anyone actually know if the "Dust Removal" in the energy management program actually works to remove dust from the laptop? I'm a bit reluctant to open up and dissect my laptop to check for any dust accumulation at this point, since everything has been running fine. This question came to mind since I saw that the filter at the bottom of my laptop was kinda caked in fine dust - wondered if the same was inside my laptop. I got the laptop in December 2012.

A:Dust removal in Ideapad Y580

hi marshchen,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

That application can only minimized collection of dust in the Exhaust system of your Laptop.
Since the process of the vents is to get air fom the outside to pass through the heatsink . Dust collection cannot really be avoided.

One symptom of a fan and vent dust is that when the vents blow very hot and minimal air and the laptop is heating up more than usual.

A yearly cleaning would be ok.
You can refer to the Maintenance Manual of this model on how to open the cover and get to the heat sink.
You might also want to refresh and apply new Thermal paste to the Heat sink.

Just be careful on the plastic parts and also wear an anti static starp. If you're not comfortable doing this, You can opt to have a repair center do this.

Best Regards
Solid Cruver

Greetings! While I do understand that on Y580 there is no hardware button available for the thermal management software, I do not understand why this software is not included in the drivers. To use it, should I install the energy management drivers for another Y model? Is that recommended at all, or are there risks? Please advise on how I can enable thermal management safely for my IdeaPad Y580. If that cannot be done, please give instructions on setting up SpeedFan or some other fan control software. A:Ideapad Y580 Black screen with cursor

Hi cablecons,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

We would need to isolate the the stage where it causes the issue.
Making the BIOS appear onscreen is a good sign that the sytemboard is functional and we can continue on possible issue with the harddrive or software/drivers.

Here is the hardware manual for parts removal guide.
To start, unplug the charger and remove the battery. Press and hold down the power button (12 seconds) to drain flea power. Connect the AC charger and press the One key recovery button (item6 page 71) and check how it goes.

This supposes to power on the laptop and shows Novo menu.

If same black screen then disconnect the charger and remove the harddrive, press the power button down for 12 seconds. and turn on using the same One key recovery button.

Update us how it goes.

I've been using this laptop for around a year or so now, and it's worked perfectly up until this point in time.  The issue that I'm currently having is entirely mechanical. At the moment, my keyboard is intact and works just fine. However, if I press a key, (mainly the 'e' key) off-center, it pops the entire key up and I have to click it into place. It's not life-threatening or crucial to the machine's function, but when I am busy typing papers or lesson plans, having a key on the most constantly used vowel key continually pop up really puts a dampener in things. I've taken the key out and have tried to click it back in. While I can't see what's going on (given that there's a key in the way!), I can most certainly feel it clicking into place twice, both clicks stemming from the right side of the 'e' key. It seems that, to the best of my knowledge, only two out of four prongs that are meant to keep the key in place and in line are actually snapping and holding the key down. Whenever I type off-center and to the right, the entire left side of the key snaps up and must be pushed back into place. I'm wondering if there's anything I can or should do. Given that I've had my machine for over a year now, I'm unsure if my warranty still covers it (speaking of, is there a way to check warranty status online?). Please, if anyone has any advice on how to fix or replace a busted key/keyboard, please, let me know!

A:Lenovo Ideapad Y580 - Keyboard Issue

A replacement keyboard (chicony, oki, or dafon are the makers - be sure to look for the manufacturer label and p/n right below the lenovo p/n on the back to get a genuine keyboard) would make a good spares, they are about $30 on ebay. I replaced a broken key on a few different laptops but much prefer to swap out the entire keyboard.  Once a single key goes bad it's likely that more keys will start to fail (note that 'e' is perhaps the most commonly used key on your keyboard because it's the most popular vowel.  Other popular keys like 't' might be failing sometime soon).  So I would suggest you buy a spare keyboard and save it until you can't live without it, the procedure to replace the keyboard is a 10 minute swap. If you want to replace a key, a sharp tipped (xacto-style) knife blade, and a loupe (magnifying lens) are important accessories.  Buy from a reputable site which has good instructions ( http://www.laptopkey.com/ ).  Unfortunately, the key and hinge are manufacturer-specific (OKI, Chicony, Dafon, see above) so you will need to determine it from the guide on www.laptopkey.com.  When I fixed our Acer c720 I also used needlenose pliers to bend a metal tab back into place, the key hinge wasn't seating correctly because the metal tab had bent and was open too wide.  The Acer c720 has a nightmare keyboard to replace with 75 different locking plastic tabs that bind it to the undersize of the palmrest, so i had little choi... Alright, so early I tried to overclock my Nvidia GTX 660m Card, and it worked. the base clock speed is 835mhz, and the memory is 2500mhz. I OC'd the clock speed to 970mhz, and the memory to 3000mhz. It all worked fine, and boosted my gaming framerate quite a bit in PlanetSide 2 and Skyrim. ( I used NvidiaInspector to overclock, btw.) I went back to the overclocking interface, and accidentally set the memory rate to around +1300mhz. I then, without realizing, clicked on set OC settings, and it crashed my card. It rebooted, but now whenever I go into Nvidia Inspector to check my clock/mem speed, they're both set on 405mhz while idle or if there's a high load on my card. It's been stuck like this for a few hours, and I've tried several tweaks to fix it, including a reboot, rolling back the drivers, and then reinstalling the drivers, etc., with no resolve. I really need some help, as this is affecting my gaming horribly, and I'm getting terrible framerates. Please give suggestions/fixes as quickly as possible!

Thanks,

A:Ideapad y580 hard drive replacement

Hi vector74 ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Once you have the indication of a failing harddrive, ensure that you have backed up all files needed and that you have the product keys of your software as you would need to re activate it. Check if you can still create your recovery image .
Check your Mircosoft account for activated status and entitlement of the digital license for guarantee.

Factory image is on the original drive but since Windows 8 and Windows 10 image is easier to download with the needed drivers in the support site, then you don't need to worry since activation would be automatic as an OEM systemboard keeps it coded inside.

Hope this help answer your query.
Update us how it goes best for you.

Hi, I have an IdeaPad Y580 with Windows 10 Pro. The battery is 10.8V, 72Wh, 6700mAh / 11.1V 6200 mAh. The battery indicator in Windows was showing something like "65% not charging" the whole time. I went to Lenovo's "Energy Management" tool and started "Battery Gauge Reset".The software said this will completely charge and discharge the battery and I should not use the laprop in the meantime, so I left it running the whole day. When I came back the machine was hanging: screen was dark, the keyboard did not respond. The power button was lit up, but did not react on normal push. I pushed it longer for a forced shutdown and voila. The laptop is now dead. It does not start. When I press the power button, the battery indicator LED blinks 3 times in orange and stops. The only way to start the laptop is to remove the battery, unplug the power supply from mains and shorten the mains lead to discharge any capacitors. Moreover, decided to measure the voltage coming out of the power supply with the battery in the laptop - the connecting leads i used went really hot within seconds and the voltage dropped from 19.5 to under 18.5V. I am not sure what is going on, but either the charging circuit or the battery is overloading the power supply. Any help?

I have a XPS One 2710 with a 1 TB HD
I want to add a 128 GB SDD in the mSATA slot.
I want to used the SSD as the boot drive for Windows. I do not want to use it as a cache with Intel RST.
1) Can I do it?
2) Intel RST is not set to RAID. I assume that is OK, I can simply add the SSD and the change the boot order in the BIOS
3) I will then install Windows and the Dell programs on the SSD from the Dell recovery disks that I created. Is that OK?
4) Is this configuration preferable rather than using the Intel RST cache?
5) Wil I have problems later when I will upgrade to Windows 8? I read "Do not disable Intel RST in BIOS, unrecoverable blue screen".

Hi afro22,
Dell XPS One 2710 can be upgraded to ‘mSATA’ drive. You can purchase mSATA SSD for your system and install it on the mSATA slot. You can attach 32GB/256GB mSATA SSD for Dell XPS One 2710.
paolo norberto,
You can go ahead and create recovery disks by following the steps mentioned in the link below.

Hi,

Can I do this (have 2 SSD drives?) First, is this worth  doing? What would be the advantage I could gain? And if doable and advantageous, what do I need to do to install the 2nd SSD? And is there anything I need to be careful of or recommended setup to make the most out of the 2nd (additional) SSD drive?
Thanks!

A:XPS 8900, adding a second mSATA SSD?

In the below picture of the XPS 8900 motherboard, there are two M.2 slots, #9 and #21. We install a WLAN card in #21. But you could remove it and install another mSATA drive.

The next thing to consider is which of the current drives is hosting the operating system. If the operating system resides on the current mSATA drive and the data is on the slower sata 3 drive, there should not be any issues adding another storage drive. Also be sure to create the operating system backup DVD or USB key in case you need to reinstall. Then take pictures of the bios screens to reference when you change the hardware. Take some time and read through this thread.

The msata drive must be GPT partitioned to be bootable unless you prefer MBR and legacy mode.

Hi.

Me and a friend each have an Ideapad 310 without ODD. Instead we have the HDD caddy/bracket. This is the configuration shipped from the store, we havent put it in ourselves. Anyway. We would like to actually use the HDD caddy since the 120GB SSD is filling up. The problem being that Lenovo hasnt included the mSATA to SATA adapter at the end of the caddy. Im guessing that this is because its a budget laptop and in this case the caddy is just to fill the empty space rather than actually indended for use right out of the box.

After research we found that the part we need should be the ODD FFC L80SM (part NO 5C10M68235)
Turns out the part number was wrong. But this is the part.

Turns out that getting hold of the part is harder than finding out its name. So thats really my question here today, is there any way to get this from Lenovo or other retailer? We live in Sweden if that changes anything.

Best regards

Hello all! So I've read around this forum about this topic and have seen mixed results.  I bought this computer a few years ago, generally pretty happy with it but I've run out of space and the battery is dying.  I'm trying to decide whether to overhaul it or buy new.   This is what I want to do: Add 2nd mSATA SSD into the second slot.  I've seen a post that this HD is compatible but thats one post.  I've read around that others have had issues adding a second SSD.  Some people cant access it, some people it only shows an extra 128 GB, some got a BSOD.   The post I saw replaced the original drive wih one of these and added a second drive so both HDs were the same brand.  Is this a better idea?  Also all of the posts I've seen on this topic were a couple years old and were dealing with Windows 7.  Will Windows 10 make this more difficult to do? http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-850-mSATA-2-Inch-MZ-M5E1T0BW/dp/B00TGIVRYU?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true... Alternatively I can try and use the same drive came with the comp in the second slot to help with possible compatability issues, but I would be limited to an extra 128GB (or possibly 256?).   I would also upgrade the memory to 8GB and add a new battery.http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220618&ignorebbr=1 Thoughts on this being successful? I'd hate to waste money on these parts if this isnt going to work.  Thanks... Read more

I want to add a HDD on my Ideapad model 80XB0006 and although the manual shows how to remove both SSD and HDD there is no spec on the HDD. Since I will order online I must have a model / type which will fit on the space I have. Now I have a SSD 256GB. I did have a chat this morning with Lenovo rep but gave up after I got nowhere. Thanks

A:Adding HDD to Ideapad Flex 15

Hi oskarIT,

Greetings.

Using the model type 80XB here on the parts lookup page shows compatible harddrive :
Part number: 16200383 ST500LT012 6G 7mm 5.4K 500G HDD
Part number: 16200554 WD10SPCX-24HWST1

On the same page would also show a number of substitute harddrives too that you can use as described here on the hardware manual page 36.

Hope this help answer your query.

Regards

I'll be getting a new laptop soon and I'm wondering what the differences are between these two SSDs. I'll probably be putting them in a Sager NP9377 from xoticpc.com. Both SSDs cost the same price but the Samsung 850 EVO has 120 GB vs Micron M600's 128 GB (both for $100) or Samsung 850 EVO with 250 GB vs Micron M600 with 256 GB (both for $160). I know it's a small difference but this is my first experience with an SSD so I just want to make sure I make the right decision. I'll be putting the OS on the SSD so what capacity do you recommend? Thank you.

The only difference is form factor and speed.

My Dell XPS 8500 has an MSATA slot in which I have a 64 gb msata board which acts as the system and boot drive. I have just purchased a 128 gb msata board I want to install in place of the 64gb unit. My system also has a 1 tb main hard drive.
I have tried a system restore DVD and Back/Restore, neither has worked at all. All I want to do is find a way to do a complete copy of the 64gb msata now installed and then replace it with the 128gb unit and copy over all of the data that was on the 64gb one. This way all I have done will be to have more storage available on my system drive, the msata drive.

Any help much appreciated.

thanks,
Michael

A:How can i copy the system from my 64gb msata to a new 128gb msata?

Hi and welcome to the SevenForums!

One solution I can suggest to this is to use imaging software to create an image of your current Windows installation. Acronis True Image is one of the popular ones on here, but there are other programs that can do it such as Macrium Reflect.

An Ideapad 110 notebook is used by an old person.
He is comfortable with a 800x600 resolution but it takes only the central part of the screen.
Oher available resolutions fit all the screen but look less comfortable.
How can I add a custom resolution that looks like 800x600 but fits all the screen?

Hello, i bought few days ago Lenovo ideapad 700-15ISK with 1TB HDD.I am planning to add the Samsung SM951 128GB to it. Does it fits my notebook? Also i have 3 hidden small paritions on HDD named as OEM(size 1000MB), EFI(260MB) and RECOVERY(467MB), what are those unacessable partitions? I marked them as red question mark. And if i delete them to have only 1 partition on HDD to storage data only do I violate the warranty?I am adding the HDD image from windows disc manager. Currently it's splitted to 2 user partitions such as Windows(c and Data(d.

Hi, I have the Lenovo IdeaPad 510-15ISK (80SR00HKVN). Originally, it doesn't have optical driver.I want to add 2.5" SSD to optical driver position. And I found this. It said that: "Only for 7.0mm HDD".  Could I use this tray as a caddy bay? Or should I have to remove it and add a new caddy bay to add my SSD to this position. I'm asking also if I can upgrade to 12GB Ram by replace 4Gb Ram slot to 8 Gb Ram?Because I found this on support.lenovo.comStandard memory  DDR4-2133 MHz, SODIMM 1, on board 1 (max 8 GB)Thank you so much!

Hi, all, first post here, so bear with me. I've had this Y580 for a few years now, and it's been functioning rather nicely throughout, just with consistently high temperatures. A few days ago, the performance abruptly dropped considerably, and so I checked my temperatures. They were absolutely ridiculous, even for what this thing averages; I was doing around 95 degrees on the GPU, and it was eternally downclocking to 135MHz. I thought it was just a cooling issue at first, and tried everything, but then when playing around in Energy Management, I noticed something really strange. If I hit the dust removal button, the fan wouldn't change in sound at all. In fact, I could barely hear the fan. I opened up the back cover and inspected the fan. While it was running, it was running at a ridiculously low speed, and would not speed up no matter what I was doing. This is a serious issue; have any of you encountered this before? Anyone have good suggestions for how I should go about dealing with this?

Hi ThunderBIrd2678 ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Manual cleaning using compressed air can , checking the gears itself if there are strands slowing it down and reapplying thermal paste ensuring contacts are good as initial step.

Uninstalling and reinstalling the energy manager tool from the support site  under power management can help.

Since fan system is still mechanical in nature, as wear and tear may now be affecting its performance, you may decide on replacing it if you have neccessary tools and skills using the manual (page 58) as guide.
Thermal module with fan in item 11 page 78 FRU number as compared the parts look up for the part number .

Hope this helps answering your query.

Regards
