Wifi issues on HP Notebook on Linux

Q: Wifi issues on HP Notebook on Linux

Hello. I bought an HP Notebook (Product key: P6L84PA#ACJ) last month. It is a free-DOS system and I installed Ubuntu version 16.04LTS in it. Everything works fine except the wifi. The keeps on connecting and disconnecting continuously, making it impossible for me to use wifi on it, and I use the net via USB Tethering. A friend has the same laptop, and the same issue, but she has a dual-booted system where wifi works perfectly fine with windows. Please help me as I have no option other than installing Ubuntu/Fedora. Also please guide if Fedora-24 is compatible with my laptop?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi I have a HP Notebook - 17-y009naModel #: W7Q78EASerial #: 8CG6365S70 I bought this machine this week.  I found on start up that it didn't find my home wifi (I live in shared accommodation - hub is in landlord's flat downstairs, with a wifi repeater on my floor).  My laptop found other wifi connections but not the house one.  I asked him to reboot and the connection was found but only for a few hours.  Then it was lost, but the other signals in the area remain in my list of locally found networks. I appreciate that it would seem be an issue with the house wifi / repeater, except my smartphone has no problem to connecting to the house service and I am now having to access wifi on the laptop by doing Bluetooth tethering through my smartphone.  Grateful for any advice. ThanksRob

I bought a new HP notebook 15-ac158nr today from Office Depot and got home, set it up, and my wifi is HORRIBLE. I am not getting anything over 800 Kbps. I had a 7 yr. old HP that was getting great wifi access (before it finally went died).  Nothing is wrong with my router or access. It has been working great for over a year with my old HP. Even when I get right next to my router i'm gettin around max 3Mbps. I can't run anything (youtube, pandora, ect.). I downloaded and installed the latest driver for the wifi from the HP website, but it did not help. Do I have a bad machine? I was very excited about this purchase, and am now VERY dissapointed. My old HP was a beast, and I can't even watch a video on this. Please advise. Thank you,Chad

It is 15-e037cl model number. Not sure why you are upset with HP; your problems only started after you installed Windows 10 which HP did not make you do. Nevertheless it should work fine on your laptop.  The drop in internet speed when you run on battery is likely a power setting. When you shift to battery sometimes processor speed and other performance is slowed down to extend battery life. That can be overridden in the power settings.  The official specs on your model laptop do not list bluetooth: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03885347 It would help to see a screenshot of the device manager just to see if you have the right drivers installed. AMD computers in particular do not seem to do well on the generic drivers Windows 10 seems to want to install.

Dear Forum, I have not used the forum before and I am not very technically minded I have seen several posts and replies from members who have been dealing with a similar problem to me and I believe I have tried the solutions posted but nothing has worked so far. I have a Compaq Presario CQ57-480SA Notebook PC - Model #: B1V34EA I think it was bought in 2012. Actually my wifi adapter can catch all other wifi signal except my wifi router.

A:my notebook wifi adapter don't get my wifi router

There are several resons.1. The wifi signal might be too weak at the point where the computer is.2. Other device radiation/signals might be blocking it.3. Your router signal might be hodden (check EWS of router).4. Signal broadcasting might have been turned off on router. Since other signals are found on the computer, there shouldnt be a issue with your couputer.

I might even want to have only linux in my computer but I dont know how to fix if something goes wrong, I have no experience in these things. I have tried to find imformation of what I should do, but I have no idea. I dont want to use only windows. If someone knows something or have a little time to help me, or to guide me in right forum or something, I thank you.

What part of Ubuntu is not working well? You have an AMD processor and AMD integrated video which is a bit challenging in Linux but can be made to work. Is wifi working?  I also prefer to have Linux available and on my latest laptop it was problematic to get it installed in a dual boot arrangement so I installed it in a Virtual Machine installation and that is generally enough Linux for my needs.

I plan on using the Auditor and some other tools like AirSnort, AirCrack, etc so I would like good support for those programs also.

Yeah, so my wifi is far away and with linux I have outstanding connection, can get 600kb/s so fast enough.

But on W7 and 8, the AP hardly shows up anywhere and when I can connect to the network, its like 0,0000001kb/s.

I installed latest MF driver and his software. The windows driver was crap as well.

Any ideas?

Hello, Thank you for posting in the HP Support forum. Welcome! HP computers (most of them) are designed with Microsoft and Windows in mind. They do not officially support Linux due to lack of tests, HP propretiery and tested drivers, etc... As you probably know, Linux is different from Windows and FOSS drivers here come from the kernel itself. If wi-fi or sound adapter is not recognized OR if it does not function well, it may be due to lack of proper and tested drivers in the kernel. I can advice you try with different still supported Kernel versionsor post in the Linux community >> https://www.kali.org/community/ Kali is special Linux-based operating system not typically used by novice Linux users and not typically run on daily bases. You may also try the most common Linux-based OS Ubuntu or Linux Mint.

Hi Guys,
This is Viral. I am using an Acer laptop model ASPIRE 4736 since the last five years. There haven't been much issues with it. except for the battery and thats it. But recently, since last two weeks I noticed that my Wifi would stop blinking after sometime after I start my laptop and then it wouldn't work even when I try to turn on and turn off the Wifi switch(it doesn't respond anything). I tried searching the net for this issue using my office laptop and found that a system restore would help to solve this issue. Since I remembered that I updated Java as well as there was this ad software which got installed and I had unistalled it. So I did a system restore and then when I opened the device manager, I am not able to see intel r wifi link 5100 driver on it. I tried restarting my laptop and did everything and couldn't find the driver(it was there before the system restore). But later on the same day, the driver got installed automatically and the WiFi started working but only for a couple of minutes after the restart and then it stopped. So  I did the system restore again to the date when everything was working perfectly and when i did that, again my intel r wifi link 5100 driver is not shown on the device manager(network adapters). I don't if it would automatically get installed or not but its sure that the WiFi issue still be there. So can you please help with this issue?

Hi there

after no problem with all the various updates on Windows 1607 I've really got a strange one now

Laptop (HP envy) has lost Wifi and Internet connectivity on the Windows HOST - but a Linux VM I'm running on the same laptop has absolutely NO problem connecting to both 2.4 and 5 GHZ wifi networks.

The Wifi card in the computer is a bog standard Intel Dual Band Wifi adapter AC7265 -- been running fautlessly ever since the start of the W10 program.

Not sure why this adapter should suddenly stop working - I've checked the VM and it hasn't "hogged" the device by disconnecting it from the host.

Reverting back to BEFORE latest updates were applied -- all working again.

(No changes of any kind were made to the Linux VM so it's not the VM that's at fault here).

Can't understand why this update should hose up a perfectly decent reliable piece of working hardware !!!!!!.

Cheers

Hello,I have recently bought a G510 laptop and all in all I like it - it does what I need it for. There is however one issue that really makes me reconsider even buying Lenovo again and that is the Wifi Card that is builtin. The Broadcom BCM43142 currently only work with the broadcom-wl kernel module under Linux and it doesn't work well. I get disconnects every 1-10 minutes that last at least a minute which makes it almost impossible to use WiFi properly. This wouldn't be so bad - after all WiFi cards are not very expensive but it turns out that all cards I tried so far are blocked by the BIOS. @Lenovo: I realise that Linux users are probably not your priority but can you please at least publish a list of compatible WiFi cards for your Laptops? Regards,Uli

My question is: Since it doesn't have a CD rom, how should I install Linux (i know maybe from XP or USB) but I want to install Linux then get rid of XP (because the computer's limited space)...

So plz help me with this question thx....

Does the hard drive have a partition for restoring the windows xp if needed?

Since the computer has no cd-rom drive is there an option for booting from USB in BIOS change boot order?

If the hard drive has no recovery partition how do you intend to go back to Windows xp if the installation of Linux is unsuccessful and also putting Linux in place of Windows XP might void any warranty on the computer?

I just recently built a web server that runs on Fedora Core. Only problem is, Fedora can't detect my ethernet port in my motherboard (a Asus P4800SE).
Any suggestions?

FC needs to be configured for NETWORKING and to enable it during boot
(it should be the /etc/rc.d/init.d/network script)
enter:
find /etc/rc.d -name \*network\* -printand you'll get the boot script names for networking:
the Sxxnetwork is the script which will config and bring up the ethernet
and Kxxnetwork is used to shut it down

btw: /etc/rc.d/init.d/httpd is my Apache boot script

From the root login, enter /etc/rc.d/init.d/network status to verify
that you have the ethernet scripts and the interfaces are known.

The MB:Asus P4800SE should not be an issue, but the ethernet NIC and the
proper driver is in question.

Drivers that are loaded at boot time are located in /sys/module and my
3com card shows up as 3c59x

I am trying to setup vgetty for the very first time ever. Right now I'm trying to setup a basic answering machine. I'll advance it from there.

However, I'm stuck because the modem connection does NOT seem to be working. It was saying that the init failed, but fumbling around web pages, I think I fixed it, because now it only says that the OK is NOT recieved.

I have an Intel AC'97 Modem Controller, according the the hardware tools. It was Windows 98 age. Now it's running Mandriva Linux 2009.1.

So how would you troubleshoot an OK message? How do I get it to say OK back so it can answer the phone?

Now, the odd thing about this setup, is that the physical setup is very advanced. I'm NOT using a regular phone line. I'm using a Magic Jack.

The Magic Jack is plugged into a USB AC Hub, which is plugged into the computer running Windows XP on the USB side. I plugged the phone connection into the line port of the Windows XP machine. Then I plugged the line port of the Mandriva Linux 2009.1 machine into the phone port of the Windows XP machine, and I plugged in a cord into the phone port of the Linux box going to a 3-way phone splitter. 2 of the 3 plugs are used for phones. There is one wired phone for troubleshooting, and one wireless phone. The third is reserved for dial-up networking, which is NOT used at this time.

Now the phone for the Magic Jack works, both of them. The Magic Jack softphone works too. So does the modem to which the Windows ... Read more

Hi, i have maddening issues with my internet.

I own an Acer One notebook and up until a month ago internet worked just fine. Lately it is very slow when i'm in my room (download speed 0.08 sometimes) but it works in 2 spots and it gets better as i get closer to the router (it's downstairs). We have 2 PCs and another laptop using the same router and they all work fine, even in my room.

I've checked for viruses and malware (MS Essentials and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware), emptied cache and temp files, reset router, i don't know what else to do.
Would reinstalling wireless driver do it? I'd need some help finding it.

Btw i am running windows 7 and it's a 32bit.

Thanks in advance for any input!

I have an HP notebook, model dv8 & it has had this problem for over a year. It randomly turns off the wifi connection - the button to turn the connection on/off on the keyboard turns orange from blue. When I press on the button, it reconnects. Sometimes the pc stays connected for a couple of hours & sometimes it goes right back off. When it goes off the pc may reconnect on it's own only to go back off a moment later.

It is NOT my router because my other 3 pcs have never done this. This pc is running Windows 7 & the router is Linksys N. The pc has an Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6200 AGN network adapter. I tried reseating the card by opening the back, pulling the card out, & reinstalling it. After that I did not have a problem for 2 whole days!

Would replacing the wifi card fix this problem?

I bought this version of the laptop in November 2013 and a few days later I had to return it because the WiFi would not work. I got my second one and the WiFi worked for about 6 months. For months I thought it was Time Warner Cable and I would argue with them time after time doing speed test after speed test and sending me a new router. So then I started calling Tech Support for both Microsoft and HP and got the run around. Finally the place where I bought told me it was HP. So again I called Tech Support and they finally agreed that it was their hardware they began helping me. Each of their solutions would last for a months. FInally the WiFI just flat stopped working. After arguing with them about how long this problem has been going they finally agreed to fix it even though the 1 yr Warrenty had expired. They had me send it off to the facotry or HP repair shop for 7 days. Here they replaced 3 or 4 items.  This worked for about 8 months. I have been asking for help but again they want to be paid for knowledge even though the probem was never really solved. I have been trying use this Forum for help but I cannot find anything.  HP Envy dv6 Notebook PC Windows 10 64-bitOS Build 14393-.321Intel (R) Core (TM) i5--3230M CPU @ 2.60 GHz 2.60GHz That I am aware of the Updates have been installed as they took place on 10/12 and today is 10/14. When I plug into an Ethernet connection it works great. Ive only had my computer for a few weeks.  When I first started using it, it was very slow and the wifi kept cutting in and out.  I thought it was an issue with just my computer until everyone in my house was having the same problem I was having.  Cutting off at the same time.  So I thought it was the router (we never had any problems before I got this computer).  But I thought about it and noticed that the time I got the computer was the same time we started to have router problems.  So I turned my computer off for a day.  NO router problems for any of the other computers.  I turn it back on for a day, router problems for everyone.  I homeschool, so my computer is vital to my kids schooling.  Because there computers are connected to mine to do school (wirelessly).  So right now I have it hooked up to my router by ethernet cable (very inconvient this way, cause these really no safe place to put my computer where the router is set up).  And it works great on just the cable.  No wifi cut offs for anyone esle either.  So my computer is causing the Wifi crashing. I have done all my Windows and HP updates.  And have updated my wireless driver (Realtrk RTL8188EE 802.11) Wifi rounter info....Huawel Technologies....Model: HG532eCompter specs.....HP Notebook....Windows 10 64 bit....Intel i5 500U....6 GB memory...1 TB Hard Drive

This is a small problem but it bothers me nevertheless. I have a notebook running Windows Vista Home Premium. At boot up the status indicators show the wi fi as enabled and running but the adapter switch (wi fi switch) is in the off position. At this point no networks can be detected when I know there's one available. I have to turn the adapter switch on and off a few times then it operates normally. Originally the system would boot and not indicate that wi fi was on. Perhaps the problem is only with the indicator lights or wi fi switch.

Is there a setting somewhere that is telling the notebook to boot with the wi fi enabled? I'm new to Vista and tried to find a setting but haven't found anything that I'm comfortable changing not knowing what I'm doing. I've owned several different systems over the years but only have an intermediate level of experience with advanced settings, etc.

Any ideas? Virus? Did I inadvertently change a setting? Hardware problem?
Thanks for your help.

Hello all,

I am new to this forum but think it's an excellent idea and will contribute where I can. I ordered a "Tevtec Mini Notebook" from ebay for my daughter. It's made in Japan, was shipped from the US to my sister's address in the UK, and I am trying to get it to work on a "Livebox" in France where I live!

It is supplied with Windows 6 software, usually used on mobiles. I think it is the networking settings I need to set correctly. It can see the live box, but when I click on "Connect" it goes through the following four stages:

Status: Not Connected
Signal Strength: No Signal

I click on connect then:

Status: Associating with Livebox BFDA/Failed to connect to Livebox BFDA
Signal Strength :Excellent

Status:Nor Connected
Signal Strength: Excellent

Status:Nor Connected
Signal Strength: No Signal

I have an opportunity to configure the following settings:

Encryption:

WEP
Disabled

Authentication:

Share
Open
WPA
WPA2
WPA2-PSK
WPA-PSK

IEEE 802.1x Authentication:

Enable 802.1x authentication on this network (Tick Box)

and if I check the box, there is a choice of:

EAP Type:

EAP or
TLS

I bought this for my daughter and gave it to her last night but she is mighty disappointed that I can't get her onto her onto the net, so anyone that can help would be making a little girl very happy!

Many thanks in advance

Wallplug

A:Notebook WiFi Connection help!

Well, first off, remove 802.1x authentication! Unless you're connecting to a corporate wireless network with a RADIUS server, you'll never get that working.
Download and run this Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector, click the Networks link on the upper left and paste a screen shot of that screen here. Note that this application requires NET Framework to run. If you get an error about a missing function, download and install NET Framework. For machines with no Internet connection, download this NET Framework 3.5 Full Package on another machine and transfer it with removable media to the problem machine.
To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file. To upload it to the forum, open the full reply window and use the Manage Attachments button to upload it here.

Out of no where wifi has been stopping and going for pass month. I could usually disconnect and reconnect and it will work. Starting today it disappeared completely, not showing when I click connections, not showing on device manager, or in network settings. I restarted it and messed with router just in case. I'm a student and have a lot of important stuff stored and with term papers to I don't have time for a full restart and would have to buy giant flash drive to back up data, I'm a poor student.
