HP Omen m.2 storage upgrade options: SATA, PCIe or NVMe?

Q: HP Omen m.2 storage upgrade options: SATA, PCIe or NVMe?

I ordered a customized HP Omen laptop. However, I did not add m.2 to it because I thought I could put a better one inside.During customization, I saw NVMe m.2 as an option. Does this mean HP Omen m.2 socket support NVMe? I'm looking to add either a Samsung 950 Pro Series PCIe NVMe or HyperX Predator PCIe. At the very least, I'll add a SATA m.2 to it. I know NVMe is the fastest but it is very expensive. If you could also explain me the differences between SATA m.2, PCIe m.2 and NVMe m.2, I'd appreciate it.

Preferred Solution: HP Omen m.2 storage upgrade options: SATA, PCIe or NVMe?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Can I install PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD drive in my HP OMEN 15-ax033dx Laptop? Or an Optane drive?

A:Re: Can I install PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD drive in my HP OMEN 15-a...

You should be able to install it in your notebook. An HP Expert colleague of mine has an Omen 15ax251  product loan and he was able to install a 512 gig Samsung PM961 NVME M.2  SSD in his. We have discovered that not all of the Omen motherboards have an M.2 slot. I recommend that you check yours before ordering the SSD. Here is a link to the remove and replace videos.https://h20574.www2.hp.com/results.htm?SID=10862325&MEID=56302E24-377B-429D-AE4F-1D654C0CF807

Hi

I am confused. Very confused as a matter of fact.

I would like to upgrade my PC with a m.2 drive but do not want to buy the wrong one and waste my money.

My motherboard is a Gigabyte H97-D3H. It has a m.2 slot and the manual states that it has a Socket 3, M key, type 2242/2260/2280 SATA & PCIe SSD support. I note that the term NVME IS NOT present in the description. On Newegg web site, I note that some M.2 drives have the term NVME in the description and some others do not (only show PCIe x 4).

My question is simple:
Can I buy ANY M.2 drive whether the term NVME is present in the description or not ? If the PCIe support is the same for PCIe and NVME (assuming it is), why doesn't my manual shows NVME in the description (it only shows socket 3, M key, type 2242/2260/2280 SATA & PCIe SSD support) ?

Can anyone shed some light ? Boy !! Boy !!! Am I ever confused...I want to make sure I do not buy an incompatible drive.

Thank You

I've been keeping an eye on the Thinkpad P70 for a while and I'm ready to buy with the 4K display. I would like to have the fastest ad most robust storage option for the primmary drive. I see that I can configure the P70 with a 512GB SSD PCIe-NVMe straight from Lenovo but this will now incur a 3-4 week additional delay. Or I can buy the laptop from lenovo and buy a Samsung 950 PRO 512GB PCIe NVMe M2 seperately from Amazon for slightly less and Amazon has it ready to ship right away. Are both of these drive options the same? This is what I'm considering buying from Amazon for use with the P70 and I wonder if the PCIe drive option that Lenovo offers is the same "Pro" version below. http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-950-PRO-Internal-MZ-V5P512BW/dp/B01639694M/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1461... Thanks for any clarification.

A:P70 Storage: Configure with 512GB SSD PCIe-NVMe or...

More or less yes. The 950 Pro is the consumer version of the SM951 that Lenovo uses. You can look up both on Samsung's site to see the differences. However, if you want the "fastest and most robust storage option" you'll want the RAID 0 m2 512 option. That nearly maxes out the theoretical read and write specs for 4 lane NVMe 3.0 connectors at about 3.8GB/s for both in real life tests. Otherwise, you are looking at 2.5GB/s read, 1.5 GB/s write as a single m2. You can't activate RAID unless the system is ordered that way (different motherboards.) (FYI: the 256 drives do not have these same numbers; they are 2.2 GB/s read and 1.8 GB/s write)

That depends.  Are we spending your money or mine?

Given your use case I'd probably use the extra $ to go with a 500GB 2.5" SSD.  Then again, I'm a spec snob and might not be able to resist the NVMe drive.

As you've already figured out, the 470 only uses 2 PCIe lanes so that limits the NVMe SSD to something like 1700MB/sec.  The SATA unit would be more like 500MB/sec or so.  In practice, you'd probably never notice a difference.

I recently bought ThinkPad P52S with following storage option:1TB Hard Disk Drive, 5400rpm, 2.5", SATA3  and realized that I need to change this one for  256 GB Solid State Drive, PCIe NVMe M.2 drive I am affraid even this laptop supports both models it is not easy to make this upgrade. Actually, I would like to know which parts I need to order from lenovo in odred to replace old SATA HDD with new one M.2 PCIe NVMe drive (I already have one). I tried to do it using Support - Parts & Accesories - schematic view TP_T580_P52s_Main_FRUs Components on the page: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-p-series-laptops/thinkpad-... but, honestly I could not relize what I should order.  I guess that I need one internal cable, and metalic mount "box" (size similar/same to existing SATA HDD) which contains 2 connectors (one for cable which connects mainboard and "box" (I am not sure does existing cable is good), and other connector where I should inserd M.2 PCIe SSD.I would appreciate if someone can advice which part numbers i need to purchase in order to make feasible usage of the M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD instead of aforementioned SATAIII HDD. Thanks in advance to all of you!

Hello all, is it possible to upgrade, after market of course, to a 1T NVMe PCIe SSD? This is a novice question, but wanted to ask, as some friends are pushing me towards T460S because of this drive availability. Would not all I need is an adapter and would that, along with the  NVMe PCIe drive fit, within the casing? Or is it more technologially involved than that, like bios, space and other such? Also, the T460P has 4g RAM soldered in, yet one can upgrade to 32g involving 2 - 16g sticks, this does mean that the 4g is diabled with the 2 sticks installed, correct? TIA - bo1953

up until windows preview build 14986, the pcie driver "Mobile 6th Generation Intel(R) Processor Family I/O PCI Express Root Port #5 - 9D14" (v10.1.1.27) correctly detects the "Standard NVM Express Controller" storage controller and the Toshiba THNSN5512GPU7 NVMe disk attached to it. starting with windows preview build 15002 (and 15007), the included pcie driver has troubles detecting the storage controller - during bootup, it is detected 4 times, with each time on a different device id. subsequently, the drive is also added 4 times, resulting in boot controller errors & timeouts and failed sleep mode/shutdowns. the included chipset driver in these latest builds seem to have been bumped to v10.1.1.33. the problem can easily be replicated by using unmodified recovery boot usb sticks made from the official isos, and then checking in a recovery console. it is thus not related to anything installed in my system.

Planning on purchasing a M920t. Manual and specs say it supports M.2 Storage and SATA RAID.  I know that M.2 will not work with the RAID and only the 4 SATA ports will work.  What I want to know is if the M.2 slot will cover the SATA ports next to it.  This would render the SATA ports useless if it covers them.  There are no documented ACTUAL pictures of the M920t Motherboard in Lenovo's support only un-usefull cartoon diagrams.  Is there anywhere I can get a full image of the board or if someone knows if the SATA ports are un-useable when the M.2 port is in use?   I want to use the M.2 512GB my model comes with for the OS and a set of regular SATA drives for a RAID 1 Mirror.M.2 / Sata port location and Info needed.Never understood why MFG's never release actual images of the boards and only cartoon diagrams.

A:M920 Storage Options M.2 SATA RAID

The direction of the M.2 connector on the motherboard supports the insertion of the M.2 2280 drive card to project "down" off of the motherboard and out over the metal chassis.  It is the opposite direction from the SATA connectors which are "up" just right "above" the M.2 connector.

I assume that the M920t is like the M910t regarding insertion of an M.2 card, in that there is an additional plastic mounting bracket which clips onto the metal chassis right there, in order to support the outer-projected off-motherboard end of the card.  It also contains a hole with a plastic push-pin that goes through the semi-circular tightening hole at the farthest outer end of the M.2 card and into the hole on the plastic bracket, in order to fasten the card down securely at that far end.

Actually, the plastic bracket part is double-wide, so that it can support the projected ends of both the x4 M.2 storage card as well as its neighboring x2 M.2 WAN card, if you should happen to install both of these optional M.2 cards.

The SATA connectors are totally unobstructed even when one or both M.2 cards are inserted.

Yesterday I installed a Samsung 950 pro 256gb m2 pcie nvme ssd into a Dell E7270
Older configuration was with a sandisk regular sata 3 ssd. After replacement did a bios reset twice, once factory reset, once custom. (I left sata on ahci.)
I chose to install windows 10 pro x64 by using the uefi/gpt methode. Legacy options off.
Installation went without a problem. Afterwards I installed the Samsung nvme driver 1.4.7.17.
Also the Samsung magician software. It reports a link speed 8Gbps (is ok), link width 16 Gbps (should be 32?) .
Is there a way to change the pcie link width from 2x to 4x? I thought this ultrabook did support x4.

Hi guys, I bought the T570 with their cheapest SATA HDD so that I can clone it and upgrade myself, but once I popped open the back, I found that there's not an M.2 slot available for the upgrade drive (Samsung 960 Pro). According to the manual, https://www.manualslib.com/manual/1240407/Lenovo-Thinkpad-T570.html?page=139#manual, I need a converter of some sort, which I presume replaces the SATA cable and the mount for the much smaller form factor drive. I found this http://www3.lenovo.com/us/en/accessories/memory-and-storage/storage/HDD-BO-ThinkPad-M-2-SSD-Tray/p/4..., but it has 0 information on whether it's compatible with the T570, and whether this is what I need in the first place. Can someone help? Has anyone done this already? Can I pick it up somewhere so that I don't have to wait 5-7 days for it to arrive? I also have a 3-year NBD support contract, but after calling support, I am told they can't just come bring the part. Thank you in advance.

I am looking for a new laptop. I currently have a X121e and recall it being extremely easy to configure on Lenovo's site. So I decided to look at the X270. However, having had great difficulty even starting to configure it (apparently, Lenovo does not favour Firefox any longer), I'm currently having trouble understanding the choices. The first is the choice between PCIe and SATA PointingDevice. Following some discussion, I gather this has nothing to do with any kind of pointing device, but affects my HDD/SSD choices. OK, so let's see what the PCIe choices give me. I get 5 'first hard drive' options. (Nothing I do gets me a 'second hard drive' option, so not sure about this. Or rather, I almost understand this now I've read the platform specification, the user manual, the hardware maintenance manual and various posts on Reddit. Lenovo do like to make buying a challenge!) Now, however, I've reached the end of my google-fu. Intel 256 GB Solid State Drive OPAL2.0 PCIe-NVMe256 GB Solid State Drive PCIe-NVMe OPAL2.0 - CapableIntel 512 GB Solid State Drive OPAL2.0 PCIe-NVMe512 GB Solid State Drive, PCIe-NVMe OPAL2.01 TB Solid State Drive OPAL2.0 PCIe-NVMeI understand the difference beween 1/2 and 3/4 and 5 is obviously size. Does the new P52 support the Samsung 970 PRO NVMe M.2 SSD drive ? Lenovo's 1TB Solid State Drive PCIe-NVMe OPAL2.0 M.2 costs $1060 (CAD) whereas I can get a Samsung 970 PRO 1 TB for $625.  And I think the Samsung is probably faster... Comments ?

Does anyone know what brand/model/version of the solid state drive comes with a ThinkPad P50 configured with a 512Gb SSD PCIe-NVMe?I called the support centre here in the Uk but they couldn't help. I've seen lot of people tend to buy a cheap HD and then swap it with a Samsung 950 PRO NVMe M.2.Could this SSD (950 PRO) be configured as primary (and only) drive? Thanks.

A:P50 and SSD PCIe-NVMe

If you order a 512GB PCIe NVMe drive in your P50 laptop configuration, you'll more than likely get a Samsung SM951 drive. You may certainly configure this to be your primary (and only) drive in your system.

Hi all,I have a P51 laptop with 256GB SSD drive and wish to replace it with a new 512GB drive.   The new drive is the Lenovo replacement part FRU 00UP440 (Lenovo Drive SSD M.2 2280 PCIe NVMe 512GB OPAL 2.0 FRU SSD M.2 2280 PCIe NVMe 512GB OPAL 2.0 Samsung)However I wish to clone my existing disk over, so require a USB Adaptor to connect the new drive to.   Can anyone share any links to a compatible USB device please? Thanks

Hi, PCIe-NVMe SSD or normal SSD? Which kind of SSD would you recommend? A shop told me, that there are some problems with PCIe-NVMe regarding compatibility anddurability and that PCIe-NVMe is not really faster than normal SSDs. Is this true`?Thanks for any advice!
