several issues... virus? junk sites, device driver, logging on issues

Q: several issues... virus? junk sites, device driver, logging on issues

I have been trying to post for several days but unable to. The issues i have been having includes: my driver for my NVIDIA GeForce 7400 is preventing standby, google is directing me to junk sites, and i am having issues with restarting with either it taking forever to shut down, or when it restarts, all i get is a background and pointer, but that's it.

whenever i try to copy and paste, i think that is what is preventing me from being able to post. so my dds log is attached but that's all i can do for now...

Preferred Solution: several issues... virus? junk sites, device driver, logging on issues

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hello Leah,

I appreciate your efforts, but I really need to see the dds.txt. That's the one with all the 'meat'

Can you please run dds.scr again and attach the dds.txt?

What about gmer? Were you able to run that?

We have a computer and a laptop and am having the same problems on both. The internet will run fine if just looking at sites, but as soon as we log in somewhere like myspace or even this forum it will stall and sometimes not let us log on at all. Here are the logs on the laptop. Should I post a seperate thread for the computer as well?

I've come here in desperation. Lol. This just seems beyond odd to me.

So there's a forum community I am a big part of, and I've always had problems with that forum not keeping me logged in using, both on FF on PC and Safari on Mac.

Recently, they've updated the site and now I have trouble logging in full stop. The log in page just refreshes over and over. If I clear cookies, it lets me log in, but will log me out at random. This only occurs on Safari on Mac. (Not tried other browsers on the Mac, but Firefox on the PC only has the above issue).

Out of curiosity, I turned on the "cookie filter" on my Integro VirusBarrier X6. This fixed the logging in issue on that particular forum, but it CAUSES the problem on Facebook and Twitter...

Any explanation, help, etc much appreciated.

I have an HP Pavilion G7 that is about 6 years old. It's running Windows 10 and I haven't had any prior issues with it.
After much troubleshooting I am finding that my computer is not recognizing devices that I plug into any of the three USB Ports. It will charge anything that I plug in but will not recognize them to transfer data. Along with this problem my built in webcam isn't working. I've tryed updating the drivers but have not had any luck as of yet. I should also say that all of these things were working a week ago.

Thank you in advance.

I have a few problems:
1. My one USB 3.0 does not recognize any device I plug in. In the device manager "Unknown Device" is displayed under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" when something is plugged in. I can charge my phone in this port though. Actually, I just plugged in an older USB mouse I had and it worked briefly. I haven't had this happen with anything else. I know I had this mouse consistently plugged into this port when it was still working though. Hm... coincidence?
2. One of my two USB 2.0s works, but it will only recognize my newer USB Mouse, and nothing else. My last USB 2.0 will accept everything I plug into it; the older mouse, USB Keyboard, and Wacom Bamboo Pen and Touch.
3. I'm pretty sure this is unrelated, but Windows always fails to install update "Intel Corporation-Display-Intel® HD Graphics."
4. The device manager likes to refresh... a lot... and fairly irregularly.
I've tried re-installing and uninstalling the "Unknown Driver," but to no result.

My brother and I built a new system up over the Christmas weekend. Since it's a new system I put Windows Vista Ultimate 32bit with SP1 on it. I brought it home and tried installing my printer on it. When it got to the point of connecting the printer I did so and it continued. 20 minutes later it pops up an error message saying " Windows encountered a problem installing the driver software for your device. Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it." Uninstalled everything that it did install and tried again with the same results. So I went and bought a new printer thinking my old one wasn't compatible. I bought a Canon Pixma MP620. Brought it home tried installing it and got the same error message. I have Windows 7 64 bit home edition and this unit performed flawlessly. I had issues with the security software and uninstalled it, which was a nightmare. After that when ever I boot the device driver will not install. This creates a very long boot up and then a slow computer for at least 20 minutes.

When I boot up in safe mode it installs. I have had Microsoft support help in the past and the tech uninstalled the Atheros and tried another driver but that wasn't compatible. I am back to where I started. Also when you look at Atheros' device drivers they don't list my number for Windows 7, only Vista or earlier versions of Windows.

How do I find out what is blocking the installation in normal mode?

Okay I recently installed a new video card. When I installed it I had to move a USB PCI card to the bottom PCI slot. I reformatted the hard drive and reintalled windows. When I look in device manager there is a yellow exclamation point next to SCSI and RAID Controllers----Nvidia NForce(tm) ATA RAID Class Device. Under the properties it says that the location is unknown and "the device is not working properly because windows cannot load the drivers for this device." The driver version is 5.10.2600.446. I have never had any exclamation points in my device manager before. Any ideas of how to get rid of this thing????

If you are not running a RAID array, disable RAID in the BIOS and it should disappear from the Device Manager.

The following error occurs when trying to play a game like (Sniper Elite) on my laptop

unable to launch direct3d a compatible graphics card or driver could not be detected

I first saw this error after updating my nvidia drivers (I have tried to re-install my drivers numerous times)
Others errors of note are; only one monitor is shown in the display settings with highest resolution 1024x768 (my monitor is capable of better), My computer is unable to enter sleep mode (the Sleep action appears clear and cannot be selected). And Mp4 videos are extremely pixelated and can barely play.

It looks like the computer does not recognize what graphics driver is installed. My computer is old (about 6-7 years) but I could do all of things listed above before this problem occurred.

A:Graphics device driver issues

Have you tried rolling back to the older drivers that were working OK? I'm dubious that there is anything to be gained by installing the latest drivers on a really old system. You've had a lot of use out of this machine so if the graphics are shot maybe it's time to look for a new laptop?

On my system (specs in profile). I have recently experienced a problem where when I restart my computer, I have two USB devices which have aren't working and say "Device cannot start (Code 10)" both devices are security or access control devices. first is a USB fingerprint reader, and the other is a Yubikey 4. I have never had any issues with using these devices in the past but starting this afternoon, every time I restart my system these issues occur. I am able to resolve the issues by running the Microsoft Hardware Diagnostic (Fixit) tool which advises me to re-install the device drivers which corrects the issues until the next time I restart the system. Which then I have to go through the process all over again. I can include additional information upon request. Also, thanks in advance for any assistance in this matter.

My Wacom Intuos2 tablet randomly stops working, forcing me to restart the computer to re-enable it.

When I say "stops", I mean not only does it not take input, but the device light goes out. Switching to another USB port does nothing.

When I went into the Device Manager, there's what appears to be the issue tucked into the "Human Interface Devices" section. "USB Input Device" appears there, with the 'alert' icon. Going to "Properties", the error code I'm given is as follows:

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware because a previous instance of the device driver is still in memory. (Code 38)Click to expand...

I can't even roll back to a previous, functional device driver since it's still running the initial version. (Nor does hitting "update" offer a solution, though admittedly I didn't really have high hopes for the automatic driver updater that came bundled with Windows 7.)

I understand that from a functionality standpoint, I have a solution (to simply restart the computer) but that's relatively time-consuming for me, since I have references laid out, music queued up, etc. when I'm working on an image, and it's quite frustrating to set everything up repeatedly.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to fix this error without resorting to a complete reboot?

I have a Toshiba Satellite L305, running Vista SP1, that locks up and freezes at random time intervals from the time the computer connects to the internet.

I have run multiple virus scans using Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, in both Normal and Safe modes that have determined that the system is indeed clean of malware.

I believe the Network Adapters are the cause for the system freezing based on information found after running ipconfig /all. There are multiple Adapters that, based on internet searches, have something to do with the iP6 protocol.

Also, it is worth noting that there is an issue with the Device Manager. The Device Manager will not allow me to view Properties on any of the installed devices.
Subsequently, I can't uninstall the network devices for Windows to re-install to 'reset' the network settings.

* sigh*

Any help anyone would have would be greatly appreciated.

Alright, I have started a thread in the Crashes and Debugging section, and it seems this issue has been pointed towards a virus that has not yet been properly gotten rid of.

A lot of the problems that it's caused are mentioned in this thread, so it would be a bit useful to read up on what has been attempted to fix this issue and what problems persist.

I've done some troubleshooting and attempts to determine the problem, being searching for drivers/services not starting properly within the registry and such.

If you have not checked out the thread linked above, some things I have taken note is:
- Removable Disk Drives are completely gone, missing from Disk Management and explorer, not to mention external storage devices do not appear in device manager. This will put USB drives in a non-responsive state to newly plugged in devices.

- Once USB drives are put in this "non-responsive" state, they will cause a BSOD upon shutting down. (BUGCODE_USB_DRIVER, 0xFE)

- It seems that cscript.exe (Which I have noticed is connected to several worms) seems to be running at all times, hiding from task manager. (Thanks for DDS for find that out.) I don't know if this is normal or not, however.

- Typical common Anti-viruses fail to install. (Ex: Spyware Doctor and Kaspersky)

- Upon ending a random number of processes, Task Manager goes into a non-responding state, making the computer useless when it comes to opening/closing programs. This requires a hard shut off.

- A generic ... Read more

Alright, so after a run in with a particularly nasty virus (which managed to dig in and disable TaskMan in Safe Mode.. yeah, THAT nasty..), I'm having issues undoing the damage it managed to do. Here's a basic run down of events:

1. Virus appears out of NOWHERE and AVG / Windows goes berserk - it had to be a delayed payload, because my network connection wasn't even active at the time. No idea why AVG wouldn't have picked it up when wherever/whatever caused it got to my system, but my luck being my luck, it didn't and this thing got pretty rampant prior to removal.

2. Liberal use of ComboFix and manual file removal / renaming / generally crushing of the wicked has eliminated the virus as best I can tell. All AVG / HJT / CF are coming up clean. Nothing suspicious running and IN GENERAL the system seems to be back to normal (ish).

3. Still a little residual damage that's been done that I haven't managed to undo as of yet, the primary being a total lack of sound on the system.

Status of the system (soundwise, anyway):

- My Realtek AC'97 shows up in the device manager. Shows as working normally.

- Driver uninstall / reinstall newest versions haven't done any good - the closest to progress was ONCE after installing, the Windows shutdown sound played as the machine restarted.

- soundman.exe is running.

- Windows Audio service is running. Tried manually stopping / restarting it.

- Searched through the few registry entries I could... Read more

Hello helpful tech!

I'm having quite a bit of trouble with my computer at the moment. I'm running it in safe mode right now. I've tried reading several forums to remedy my situation, but to no avail!

Symptoms: slow startup (windows logo and login screen come up fast, but after that the screen is blank for a while and then everything s l o w l y loads)
macafee says everything is fine but gets stuck in a scan if I try to perform one
ran ccleaner, stuck on hkcus-1-5-21 scrnsaver something, restarted, everything fine
mouse acting funny (built in pad wasn't scrolling earlier)
the computer won't shut down unless I keep pressing the power button down
Thought it may have been a problem similar to the one here:

Also, in the spirit of complete honesty, I recently downloaded a copy of Rosetta stone from the internet. 'Cause I'm a dumb ***.

Just last week I ran TFC which got rid of tons of temp files and then MyDefrag. My computer runs great! But I got a popup from Avast that says I have over 400 GB of 'junk files' (see attached).

So obviously TFC didn't get rid of what the list shows as app cache files and some other stuff.

What should I be running periodically to clear out some of this stuff?

This has happen on 2 different laptops running almost identical. XP Pro & IE ver. 6

It happens on all sites that I have to log in on. If I stay on the website, I can move around it all day & not get logged off.

If I flip around say to my outlook or another sire, I get logged off.

Any ideas? I am thinking it is a setting in IE.

A:Issues with logging off

First, IE is now at version 7 with version 8 in beta testing. Best to upgrade to version 7 and see if the problem disappears.

Next, I give my customers Mozilla Firefox as an alternative. IE is tightly coupled with Windows so if there is any Internet related problem in Windows, IE gets affected. Firefox is more independent of Windows and is less affected by Windows problems.

Now, if you plan on sticking with IE 6, flush you Internet caches in Internet Options. Delete cookies, files and history. If you still have this problem, it might be spyware.

So, first upgrade to IE 7.

It acts as if those sites are dead and unavalible.
Also if I do a search with google, the search entrys redirect me to other pages (pop ups).

Right now I am working on other computer so I could write this message.
I've tried running Gmer but it didn't work, didn't open any window.

Any thoughts why it works with Firefox and not IE?

How long ago did you install Vista? Uninstall adaware thru the Control Panel.Perform this scan..Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.Make sure you are connected to the Internet.Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application. When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings. When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:Update Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareLaunch Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareThen click Finish.MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. The first problem i have with my system is that after reinstalling windows 7 from windows 10 all of my drivers are not able to install. I have looked into trying to update the drivers in device manager and that deleted the USB port drivers in general. After
reinstalling windows again ontop of the drivers not working other than graphical drivers my mouse is laggy and the scroll wheel does not work. I have used multiple mouses on this system and it is the system causing the issue. I looked into this problem and
found out that the Mouse is showing up as a PS/2 mouse rather than a USB mouse. The only drivers i have successfully installed were Ethernet Controller and nVIDIA drivers.

My build consists of
MSI Z370 Carbon AC

GTX 650Ti

Recently my computer has been having regular blue screens. On average, this is happening once a week, and as you can imagine is very annoying. This always seems to happen when logging out of an account. Another problem I have, which I think could be related, is that the computer doesn?t shut down (e.g.: stays on the ?shutting down? screen). This again happens on average once a week. Both of these problems started about a few weeks ago, and, as far as I can remember, no new programs were installed before this.

I am running a fully updated copy of Windows 7 Professional 64bit. Attached is the zip folder with material regarding the blue screens (I followed the guide on your website: Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions)

Many thanks for your help.

Any ideas as to what's causing me to get this error? I get this at the login screen.

The instruction at "0x771230f3" referenced memory at "0xffff0287". The memory could not be "read".

I swapped out memory and still get this error from time to time. Also, sometimes when I log in my system will freeze forcing me to reboot. System is at stock, no overclocking or anything, I have the latest vid drivers. I checked for malware and everything checks out ok. I think this is hardware related but what do I know.

A:[SOLVED] Error before even logging in, other issues

Click Start, Run and type in chkdsk /r and press enter.

Once that has finished, follow these steps...

Insert the Windows? XP CD in your drive. (Hold down the Shift Key to prevent it from starting.)

Go Start > Run ...in the box type in sfc /scannow ?please take note of the space between the sfc and the /.

This is the System File Checker...it will scan all the Windows? core system files to ensure that they are in their respective correct places, and if not replace them from the CD.

During the scan you may be asked to Insert the CD, if this happens just go retry and let it do its thing.

One important point: While sfc is running, it is not advisable to do any other work, or have any browsers/programs running on the computer, until the scan is complete. (This process will generally take around 45-65 minutes to complete).

Once finished, remove the CD and reboot your machine...all should be "Normal" (hopefully).

Please post back with the result, or if there are any further queries/concerns.

Hello All,
I've been rather unsuccessful in finding (or at least searching for) a solution to a rather tricky problem I have encountered with another user.
The user in question has a domain account that they log into a domain joined computer. When they start up the computer after turning it off the previous day, restart the computer, or even lock the computer (through CTRL+ALT+DEL or Windows+L)
it will send them to the login screen where the default and only profile is on the screen. After putting in their password, it simply sends them back to the same "Press CTRL+ALT+DEL" screen. This happens with each attempt and is reproducible,
no other errors show such as "Incorrect Password". For the user to login, they must go to the lower left of the screen, click on "Switch User", and then click on their same profile for it to accept the password and log them in. The user
must do this for every instance that they power cycle, restart, or lock their computer.
Any advice on this issue is much appreciated as I had said above, I have not had much success with figuring out a solution for this.

Hello everyone.
I've done this before once last year and you guys saved my computer.. thanks for that.
I'm here once again with a different dilemma.

I've noticed today that I got a warning from my windows telling me I did not have my firewall "on". I don't know what happened as I never touch those settings.. but I went to turn it back on and it won't let me.. all I get is an error msg saying something like.." Windows cannot start the windows firewall/internet connection sharing service.. ERROR 2 ".

I've also noticed (today) that when I click on a Google result link, it does not take me to the link address.. instead, in redirects me to another place (directory?).... also, when I have my browser open while reading something, it automatically opens a new tab on my browser transferring me to who knows where out of the blue I use FireFox.

Another problem is that I almost always do a scan with Spybot (S&D) and it always finds the SAME problems and destroys them, but the problems keeps coming back over and over again
something called "Gamevance.Playsushi".. I have killed that thing like 100 times per day with spy bot and it still keeps coming back... I have tried to uninstall these gamevance but they are no where to be found in my system... I also downloaded today something called "housecall" to do a scan and found NOTHING... I've also scanned it with AVAST home edition and found NOTHING.

Hey Guys,

I sure hope someone can help me with this one. The problem is basically what the title says - any link clicked on via Google is redirected to an ad site, a dead site, or some kind of anti-spyware site (seldom the same site), pretty much all Anti-Virus anti-spyware sites are inaccessible unless visited via a proxy, and likewise no programs can update via the internet.

I read somewhere that it could be in the windows Hosts file redirecting traffic, but there is nothing like that in there. Really clueless here. Here are my logs.

Hello everyone..

Would anyone be willing to help in diagnosing a rather complex computer related issue?

When I start Windows 8 normally, my computer slows and then freezes after approximately five minutes of logging in regardless of the work load. Within Safe-Mode 'with Networking' everything always seems fine, there is no freezing, no slowness and nothing to indicate otherwise.

Here I have listed everything I have done until now to troubleshoot the issue.:

Firstly, after entering Safe-Mode with Networking I disabled all user services and startup items, then, rebooted into normal mode with no success.. it froze again. In Safe-Mode, I disabled all services possible including Microsoft Services.. rebooted ..still no success.

I then thought that maybe it could be a temperature problem even though things were working in Safe-Mode due to the fact it takes around five minutes to not respond, so, I checked the CPU, GPU, all HDDs my Primary drive 'SDD' and my motherboard, they were all well within range and none were fluctuating more than six degrees.

Then I utilised MS Driver Verifier (verifier.exe) with all options selected and all drivers selected, I rebooted my computer (all within normal mode) and after ten minutes of waiting I was able to login, waited for the freeze again, rebooted and logged in again.. when I looked at the results of the 'verifier' program, no error(s) had occurred, it doesn't seem to be a detectable driver issue. ..Re... This laptop belongs to someone at work and was massively invaded by malware. I've manage to clean most of it off but I have two issues left. I intend to wipe and reimage but I'm wanting to make sure all user accounts are backed up (documents, desktop, outlook and favs)

1) I have 2 accounts in it I can't get into to backup before I wipe and reimage. I see them under Documents and Settings but Once I click on them I get access denied. (Yes I'm under the admin account, no I can't reset owner, doesn't provide that option)

2) I can't login under any account by booting up the drive in its laptop. As soon as I long it logs me out, I've tried on the admin and an admin user account.

A:2 Issues - NTFS Folder permissions and Logging in

Your best bet at this point would be to take the drive out, mount it in an external enclosure, connect it to a working computer by USB cord and copy off files that are needed for backup. After that, reinstall in the laptop, wipe completely and reinstall windows from scratch.

Okay, About three months ago, I got hacked HARD...permissions were changed, administrator rights were removed from my administrator accounts, etc. i was flabbergasted. THe iactually didn't bother me though until I ran a MBAM scan and found 133 viruses and spyware instances on my drive (NOT including tracking cookies!). I cleaned and recleaned, using MBAM, SuperantiSpyware, Avira, running each one in safe mode first, then loading into my normal account and running them, and finally erasing my user account and creating a new one. But even after the new user account was created with Administrator privileges, I still routinely received virus and Malware threat warnign flags from MBAM and Avira. Eventually, Avira and MBAM were disabled and Avira was "deleted" (Windows will not uninstall because the setup.exe file has been 'Changed" and won't reinstall it because I don't have "Administrator privileges" on my Administrator accounts!) even though at startup I receive an error message saying that Avira has been corrupted. The most telling issue is that antivirus and spyware/Malware scans come up clean on Safe mode scans, but using my normal account, the machine reboots. Using Superantispyware I notice that it's always during the memory test that this occurs (and in Safe Mode, it passes through this section with no issue). None of my antivirus programs will download updates, even ones I start manually, and although I have no problem acc... Read more

Hi Everyone,

I have a desktop computer with XP Home Edition as the O.S.

My problems started when my USB ports appeared to stop working. (One is broken, whilst the other would no longer recognise anything being plugged in). After some googling I was advised to go into Control Panel and 'Disable' and then 'Re-enable' the USB Ports. The disabling of one of these options stopped my keyboard and mouse from working. I turned the computer off but was not able to log back in without the use of my keyboard/mouse. I was not able to gain access to 'System Restore' in Safe Mode for the same reason.

Since then I have been using my partners computer to google help.

I can't recall the next step that I took (it may have been using 'Last Known Good Configuration') but I then started receiving messages such as 'missing or corrupt hal.dll file. The advice I followed was to use the Recovery Console with my XP Home Edition CD (2002 with Service Pack 2 included). Originally I was able to log in to Recovery Console by simply pressing 'Enter', however for some reason I can no longer log in. (This was after being given advice on how to restore to a different point in Recovery Console).

Ebay, msn, dominoes pizza, messenger etc. i am assuming this is because they use some extra ports that the firewall has cut out due to the nature of these sites..

I have tried playing with the port forwarding settings i found for msn, but i cant seem to get the thing to behave.

I would be very grateful if anyone has any suggestions or has experienced this themselves..

You don't need any port forwarding to use most of the websites mentioned. I don't think that has anything to do with your issue.
