I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a new Yoga 720. For the 3rd or 4th time it's reset itself and lost all of my data- outlook, quicken, the programs are still there but they are empty and it's like I never input any of the information. I contacted tech support and was told I would need to pay to get help with this ... which makes no sense to me as it is a new computer that isn't working correctly.

I used to be able to get a System Restore point generated daily and accessible on a calendar. I understand that the Restore Point calendar has been done away with, can't imagine why?

Is it now possible to have a daily System Restore point automatically generated and easily accessible somewhere?

I am trying to set my computer to create a restore point when I log on and I am using the task scheduler to do this. When I come to the point when I have to choose the script the info I was given was to look for either the vbs or scrp script. The only ones I can find that are anywhere similar are vbscript.dll or scrptadm.dll are these the correct ones?

Obviously as I am not quite sure I do not want to proceed any further, I would certainly appreciate any advice. My OS is Win7 Pro.

Thank you.

And it says that "
System Restore in Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 creates a scheduled restore point only if no other restore points have been created in the last 7 days."

If I want to change this to the last 2 days is this possible?

If I want to change this to the last 2 days is this possible?

Why?

Are you working under the assumption that System Restore makes a complete backup of your install, so that if anything bad happens, you can restore to an earlier date? Because, if you are -- that is incorrect.

What System Restore does is restore the Operating System, not your install. It does this by saving off system files before they are updated by Windows Update. So, when you use a Restore Point, all it really does is overwrite the existing Operating System files with the old copies that it saved earlier.

System Restore does not save, nor does it restore, user data.

If you want to save an image of your setup, it would be better to use something like Macrium Reflect.

I followed the instruction to manually create a Manual Restore Point and that works fine. Then I decided to set up the task in the Task Scheduler to automatically create a restore point once daily. For some reason the task is started as it should but it never completes and I have to manually terminate it. I have included in the attached ZIP file, 5 screen shots of the tabs of the task, 4 screen shots of the history tab starting and running and then 4 screen shots of the history tab when I terminated it an hour and 25 minutes later. I don't think a restore point takes over 85 minutes to complete so I wonder what I have set incorrectly??? The VBS file is C:\Program Files\Scheduled_Instant_Restore_Point.vbs and was downloaded from the W7 forum.

Let me know if you need any additional information. If this has been answered, I couldn't find the thread. Please point me to it.

Hello everyone. I have been having a problem for the last month that has really been bugging me and I wanted to see if there was a way for me to fix it myself instead of paying someone else to do it. The problem is that my computer keeps saying that it wasn't shut off correctly and it then asks me if I want to go to safe mode or just run normally. I went to run normally and it started loading. But once it passed the loading screen I see the blue screen where the computer checks my drivers for errors for a split second and then the computer completely restarts. This keeps happening. I even tried going to Safe Mode and the same thing happened.

Does anyone know what's causing this problem and/or how to solve it?

I'd appreciate feedback.

I was sitting playing a game one day and my computer just turned off! I pressed the button to power it back on and started up without a display and shortly after powered down again. The latest addition 2 weeks earlier was replacement of my generic ddr400 ram that ran at 266mhz to the corsair memory which runs at 333mhz due to processor limitations at the moment. Hey,
I am running XP pro, my pc is based around an socket 478 MSI, runs a Hyperthreaded 3.2 ghz P4 processor, 1 gig of DDR400 (pc3200) corsair xms ram, audigy 4 soundcard and a 6800 ultra graphics card.

o.k. now for my question.... Due to user stupidity (I shouldn't mess with my pc when i'm half asleep) I accidentally set my documents and settings folder to read only. Not a big deal right? Just uncheck the 'Read Only" box in the folder properties menu and all is well you say? I wish.
Each time i open the folder properties window and uncheck read only it asks me if i want to apply to this folder only or all sub-folders and directories, i have tried both options. The problem is that as soon as i close the properties window it automatically reverts to 'Read Only'. This is extra annoying because this folder contains the temp folder that my applications use so I am forced to leave the stupid properties window open to prevent it from reverting if i want to run various programs. I am not a total idiot when it comes to PCs and Windows so this is very frustrating and embarrassing. HELP ME PLEASE! Thanks in advance

Hi, All,

In my Win XP Pro SP1 installation, my System Restore has a very erratic "memory." It usually only remembers restore points from a few days back, and often times forgets all of my restore points. Even though I regularly create manual restore points (install apps, etc.), they never seem to be available more than a day or so after I create them.

My settings look like this:

Turn off System Restore on all drives: NOT checked
My C: drive: Monitoring
Max disk space: 3.6GB (12%)
My D: drive: Monitoring
etc.

I've also examined the registry (HKLM\Soft\M$\WinNT\CV\SysRest, blah blah) and the keys look good (at default values). Any idea why my System Restore is so brain dead?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi,

I have laptop with Mobile Intel(R) 915GM/GMS,910GML Express Chipset Family

I'm using Windows 7 RC Build 7100(with current updates) and when i adjust color correction within intel graphics properties everything works fine. But when i reboot or re-login brightness and contrast(or everything that i have changed) resets to its default settings. Then when i go to adjust color correction again, i find my previous settings and when i change one of these settings for at least one point, all of my previous settings(which i want to be set all the time) comes into play.

When i go to login screen everything is okay. It looks like something from start up changes brightness and contrast to its default settings.

Have anyone had similar problems? Help please. Thank You.

In the past, it seemed sensible to create a separate F: partition to hold my data away from the operating system on the C: partition. The advantage was that malware is less likely to cross into the data partition. Also it becomes possible to backup and restore each partition separately. A good solution to a malware incident might be simply to restore a previous version of the operating system without touching the data partition.

I have redirected the following folders to the F: drive: desktop, documents, downloads, music, pictures, videos.

This has worked reasonably well except that some software installer programs refuse to work from the F: partition and need to be run from the C: partition.

Times have changed over the last few years and I am wondering if this is still worth the trouble. Perhaps it would be easier to keep successive backups of the entire hard drive and, when necessary, restore everything at one time.

I would welcome any thoughts on this.

A:Create a separate F: partition to hold my data

I still use 3 partitions: One for Windows and programs, one for data files, one for my tools.Personally, I think the choice is up to you though - how you want to arrange your files and so on.

Others had the problem before, but disabling the function in the "Pen and Touch" settings or directly changing the registry as described in the link above just has no effect at all! The box is not checked, the registry key is set to "3", but I still can press and hold my pen for a right-click. Any ideas? Maybe I should re-install the drivers for the pen? Hello
I recently purchased a Kingston Data traveler 101 16GB flash disc.

The problem is that files larger than 500MB are corrupted when sent to the drive. If files had been previously stored on the drive and they’ve taken 500MB, then files added after that are completely corrupt. The files do appear and show their sizes but they cannot be opened. For example, if they’re video files, any player attempting to play them reports errors related to codecs or if they’re pdf documents, the reader reports the files are corrupt, etc.

In Windows, the actual size (15.7 GB) is displayed. No errors are encountered when sending files. However, when sending files to the drive, until about 500 MB is reached (given the drive was empty) the speed is about 1MB/s. After about 500MB has been sent, the speed reaches up to 25 MB/s. I’ve already tried the quick and full format using both NTFS and FAT32 with the default allocation size but they didn’t solve the problem.

I’ve tried using and formatting the drive both on Windows Vista & XP 32 bit systems.
Can this be fixed?

Thank you

The external harddrive (connected through USB to my computer) of my computer had a bunch of rootkits. I ran avast, which found and put into chest about 6 rootkits plus 4 other malware. All 10 had been in the System Volume Information folder of the FAT 32 partition of the external (see more detail below). My Lenovo T60 crashed and was not able to be repaired. I do not know what caused my laptop to crash, but according to the PC Tech, the hard drive was reformatted. To be honest, I am here in the Philippines and did not bring my recovery disks with me & I am not so sure about the technical ability of the PC Tech.

That being said, he installed Windows XP Professional on my laptop and partitioned my hard drive. I have a 250 GB Western Digital HD. Before my laptop crashed, the drive was NOT partitioned. After the installation, I now have two drives, C, with 40 GB and D, with about 200 GB.

I lost a lot of photos and music, and other important documents. I decided to try to recover some of these files and used Recuva. The good news is that a lot of missing documents can be recovered. While listing the files and looking at them, I noticed that I had several System Restore points that I can recover.

My question is, can I use the most recent System Restore point that I recover and use that to reinstall all the missing software? I had MS Office 2007 Professional, MS Visio 2007, MS Project 2007, and other software that I do not have the installation disks with me.

From what I have read, System Restore will reinstall the system (registry, files, and software only) and not the My Documents folder.

If this can work, where do I put the system restore file? If need be, I can delete the new partition and resize the C partition, restore, and then repartition the hard drive afterwards.

A:Can I use a recovered System Restore point file to restore missing sw crashed laptop?

Since you already lost everything, try the System restore but first backup everything Recuva found onto a USB key. If your version Windows was not the same what the tech installed, it might not work. Also, he should have first ask you what to do with your files before formatting.
Otherwise you will have to wait till you can re-install everything.

When I copy an Access database to either a new location on the same Vista PC or a folder on another networked PC, the data in the DB is not copied. When I open the copied database all tables are empty. This happens even if I change the extension and copy it. If I try to transfer the file using several different utilities, like LogMeIn or TeamViewer or attach it in an email and send it, the database is empty when opened at the remote location.

I have added the Everyone Group to the Security to the folder the databases are in as well as changed the Owner to the folder to Everyone Group.

What is causing this? I have no problem on XP machines but I do have it also under Windows 7. I have several clients running Vista and Windows 7 and I can not copy or transfer the data so I can fix data entry problem or use their data to trace a problem in another folder.

I recently purchased a Premium (Firewire / USB )External hard drive (with Western Digital 300GB hard drive). Since then I have recomended it to three other friends in my business (Running music studio). We use the drive as a safty backup for projects we are working on and to move projects between studios. I have had the drive lose all it data about 3 times. when i power it up the computer sees it as "unformatted". The other guys have also experienced this 2 to 3 times over the last 2 months. We all know about safely ejecting before removing the drive and not powering up the computer with the drive"on".

The problem is clearly with the Premium Drive box. Anyone else experienced this?

My Computer: P4 - 3.20 GHz
2.00 GB Ram
Microsoft XP Professional V2002
Service Pack 1

A:Premium external HD loses Data!

I haven't experienced that, but if multiple boxes of the same brand are doing it, I'd say there's a flaw in the USB <-> IDE controller in the box. I really doubt it's the WD drive.

I'd consider picking up a USB external enclosure and moving the drive to the new one.

Can use your help...started up the computer today and my Word2007 normal template was corrupted. I attempted to locate the normal.dot(m) file and was unsuccessful (I searched all files and folders). Then ran Norton and found nothing; then tried to do a system restore and received error message indicating that the following file failed to extract: C:\Program Files9x86)\Common Files\microsoft shared\vgx\vgx.dll - restore point was damaged of deleted during restore...which all has me thinking I have a virus of some type...

My questions are on Windows 7 System Restore, Restore Points and Backups; specifically, potentially using a Backup as a Permanent Restore Point.

Here is the situation...

About a month ago, I did a complete Factory Restore on my HP desktop and returned it to it's factory condition. After removing the bloatware and performing all the necessary Windows Updates, the Factory Restore process went off without any issues.

Today, however, I needed to use System Restore due to an issue I was having with multiple monitors that I just couldn't figure out. So, I went into System Restore and found a "Date andTime" of a restore point that was right around the same time I did the Factory Restore. That Restore Point was also the oldest and since I knew it was a known & good restore point, I decided to use it. That restore point "Description" was labeled "System Image Restore Point" and the "Type" was labeled "Backup." (See Image)

I don't recall setting up or doing any backups although, between Windows Backup, Norton Backup and HP's Backup utilities some type of backup obviously happened. FYI, I hate having all those options, as I'd rather use native Windows tools. In any case, today, I used the System Restore using the System Image Restore Point labeled as Backup and, after performing a few minor Windows Updates, everything went off without a hitch and my monitor problem was solved.

However, seeing that Restore point b... Read more

ad 1) restore points are in the shadowstorage

ad 2) yes they are overwritten when the shadowstorage is full. You can set the size of the shadowstorage with vssadmin

ad 3) for permanent backups I suggest imaging. There you control the images yourself.

The One Link Pro dock intermittently drops off then is immediately redected by windows and installed.  I am running Windows 10 and drivers and firmware for the One Link, the intel on the machine and for windows have been updated.  No effect.  I have two monitors and a keyboard connected to the Onelink, that is all.  When the OneLink dropps off the video on the monitors stays with no issues, but the audio and the internet connection are reset and come back after Windows detects the dock again.

I am having difficulties with this.
1. Does Win 7 limit the quantity of past restore points it shows upon user request?
2. If stored elsewhere where do I find them?
3. Is there a way to set it up to show at least the last 10 restore pointsd created, or is there a smaller limit.
Right now the one and only restore point that is available is the last one. So it is like a revolving door every time a new restore point gets created, the previous one gets dropped and does not show any longer.

Given my limited competence with computer knowledge please post answers in layman terms as in Step 1.. 2 3. type.

I would appreciate help over this.

Thank you kindly

A:System Restore how to set to show every past restore point inc/manual

Hi
I believe that if you go to Backup and Restore (Start button, type Backup in the search bar at the bottom of the start menu), then click Restore button, on the screen that pops up is a blue link that says "Choose a different Date".. This will then allow you to select which backup you would like to recover your data from..

Is that what you are looking for. Apologies If I have mis-understood you.

It appears that I have created 2 files that system restore uses in creating restore points.
I found that by deleating on of them, system restore returns to functionalaity.
Unfortunately, I didnt make a record of the file name that gets duplicated (slightly different duplicate).

If someone knows the file created and maintaind by the system restore process, I would appreciate you letting me know what it is so I can delete one of them.
TIA
Neil

A:System Restore- Created Duplicate Restore Point Files

Wait what is your asking? System Restore creates restore points, which are hidden in a folder called "System Volume Information" on the root of your system drive. These restore points are actually folders inside System Volume Information, each folder contains versions of system files and data of changes to your system (such as software and hardware installs). If a problem occurs you can revert to a restore point.

If you are worried you have two restores are almost identical you can clear all the restore points leaving the most recent by going to Start (Orb on Vista)->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->Disk Cleanup.

Vista - On Vista, dialog will open click "Files from all users on this computer", then on following dialog click "OK".
XP - On XP, click "OK" on the dialog that appears.

Now it will start scanning for files that can be cleaned up. When it's done scanning a new window will appear and on the top of that window there will be some tabs, click the tab labeled "More Options". Look for the section that talks about System Restore and click the Clean Up button. Then Click "OK" on the main window. This clears all the restore points except for the most recent and should resolve your duplicate restore point problem.

I do not recommend that you ever delete files or folders in the System Volume Information, as if you need that file and your system crashes you are pretty much screwed.

Hi
I have read all of the threads on flash drive errors and have not come across anyone with a similar error to mine.

my flash drive was corrupted (RAW file system) and i reformatted it using the bgrescue linux boot cd method in these forums.

i have now reformatted it using the windows disk manager and it works perfectly when connected but after it is removed and reconnected to the pc it shows no files or folders on the drive. It even shows that the space is used on the disk. just doesnt display any files.

when i try and use U-storage.exe the tool that came with the drive. it cant find the drive but windows uses it fine.

please help me as this is a new drive.

thanks in advance

A:USB Flash Drive Loses Data When removed

Welcome to Techspot !
When you reformatted back to windows you may not have set the drive properly. Each company is a little different but basically they need a small app(permanently installed) to maintain Data and system functions, etc. to work in different machines. I suggest you go to the manufacturer's website and confirm the correct way to reset the unit and how to install it's setup file.
