Yoga S1 (20CD) Strange HDD password behaviour

Q: Yoga S1 (20CD) Strange HDD password behaviour

Hello to everyone,I'll need your help. I installed a new, fresh Win 8.1 operating system on my Yoga S1. I also mount a new Intel SSD in the place of the old HDD. So it's way faster now I need to have a HDD password, also a start-up password. So, i set the same password (I'm sure, double-triple check it) for supervisor, power-on and HDD password. I enabled the password on restart option. So here is the problem - when i power on the Yoga, it asks for the power-on pass. I enter it and it is corect. Then, it shows that it enters the HDD1 pass automatically and it is succesfull. The system boots and it's fine. But when i press Restart from Windows, it powers off, ask for power-on pass - correct, then it asks for HDD1 pass. It's the same and should be automatically filled, like in cold start. Ok, it enter it manually, but it is incorrect. I also tried with blank pass, but without succes. So, after three incorect passwods, it freezes. Then, I power off completelly, start again, enter the power-on pass and it's fine, it boots the OS. So, it's not working on restart, but cold starts are OK. As I said, I checked many thimes that the passwords are the same. Please advice guys. Thanks to everyone

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Do you still have the 2.5: drive also? I have seen this behavior once before in a machine with a 2.5" drive and an M.2 SSD. It turned out that the problem was related to the 2.5" drive, even though the bad pw showed up on the M.2 drive at restart. My 2.5" drive was originally from an HP and there was something screwed up in the HP firmware that interfered with the M.2 drive. It took me a long time to figure out what was wrong. It also might have the same symptoms with an HP SSD

Hello everybody,I have a slightly obscure problem with my fan which occurred for the first time about a week ago then again twice today.  The problem is that my fan suddenly goes to full speed only to immediately afterward die entirely, then it sounds like he tries to recover but quickly goes to full speed and the whole process repeats. One cycle takes about 5 Sec. and it keeps doing this even if I reboot in between. After quite some repetitions (i guess of order 20-30) he keeps running on the highest stable fan speed for a few minutes and then shuts down, which seems to be indefinite. The first time happened while running Windows whereas the other two times happened within Linux, in neither case high fan speed was required (typing or surfing where all activities). In Linux, i have XSensors installed which allows accessing some fan speed data. It turns out that the full speed bursts are depicted by 65535 RPM which then goes down to 0 RPM. The permanent highspeed state was once at 9500 RPM and the other time at 7800 RPM. It seems that 7800 RPM runs longer than 9500 RPM before it drops to 0 RPM and stays there.  There is nothing specifically which I could identify as an origin of this behavior, but since this is my working machine I am seriously worried. Also the sound it makes in the initial "burst"-phase really is annoying. I really have no clue what to do so any help is welcome. Thanks a lot in advance,Michael

I am confused about my Internet Explorer’s behavior about storing usernames and passwords. I have the following questions.

1. IE doesn't offer to save username/passwords for a few sites – is this issue specific to the website?

2. For some websites, it stores the username password pair, but doesn’t login automatically. That means I see empty login boxes. As soon as I click inside the username box, it prompts me with a username and when I click the username, it quickly logs into the site

3. What should I do to make sure that my IE stores usernames and passwords for all sites and logs into those sites automatically every time I visit the sites?

A:Saving username/password - IE's strange behaviour

Why would you ever want IE to cache your passwords? This seems like a recipe for disaster.

Lenovo Yoga 20CD will not power on after shut down yesterday. When I plug in charger the red dot above the "i" blinks three times. I have removed battery, held power for five seconds and put battery back in, no change

A:Thinkpad S1 Yoga 20CD will not power on

I'm facing the same issue. Suddenly it won't power on. Only LED indicator blinks when plugging in the power supply; and the LED turns on for a few seconds without plugging in the power supply. Beside that nothing happens. Any clue how to solve this? I've checked the connectors but they look ok. I've also tried resetting via "reset button" on the backside. further I've tried several sequences pushing the power button and holding it for 30 - 60 seconds. So far nothing helped. Any clue? Thanks.

I have an old Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga type 20CD. Recently I lost the system after a Windows 10 update. It took me a month to get the Lenovo recovery CD because the BIOS of this machine is locked.I found myself under Windows 8.1.The PC ran for 2 days but failed as the SSD was in poor condition. So I bought a SSD in the trade identical to that of the machine with a similar reference Lenovo. After formatting, the repair CDs refuse to install the system.I think they are good but they are intended for recovery only and do not recreate the proper disk structure.Who would have the solution to recreate this structure? I almost succeeded (UFI partition in fat 32, partition MSR, partition of data in NTFS but I can not create the locked system partition (1000 Mb) I could have done it using the commands in CMD but they no longer work under Windows 10 (for example SET DISK or other instructions that worked previously are no longer recognized. How to do it?Help!

My wife's Yoga just today stopped charging or turning on.  It was working seemingly fine before and would last several hours on battery (so don't think the battery was at the end of it's natural life).   The little blinky light on the over no longer blinks when plugged in.  There's 0 sign of life.  Here's what I've tried: 1) Hold power button for 20 seconds (both with and without power plugged in while holding before plugging back in after)2) Push the reset button with a pin for 10 seconds (again, with and without power plugged in)3) Used voltage meter to validate 20V from power supply. Also tried a second power supply.4) Removed cover and used voltage meter to validate 20V at board soldier points for the power jack (so power reaching board)5) Checked all chips, hard drives, connectors that were readily visible to make sure they were tight. Nothing when plugging back in. Questions:1) Anyone know of any common remedies or things I can look for?2) Any general guidance on getting something like this fixed? (ie, send to Lenovo, find a big name store like Best Buy, other?) Thanks!

Long story short, i erased everything and performed a clean install of Windows 10 64bit and the computer stopped shutting down or go into sleep mode. I had Windows 8.1 64bit, i upgraded it to Windows 10 about a year ago, when it first came out. The upgrade went almost fine, some bit issue with the OS but nothing serious, so i went on till i decided, to correct those little issues, to perform a clean install.  So i downloaded the media creation tool, the version with the anniversary update, and erased everything, but keeping the recovery partition. After the install, i started having troubles with entering sleeping mode or shutting down the laptop.I installed the power management driver i found on the site (n1cku04w). With that I can shut down even if it strangely blinks a few times before shutting down. I can enter sleep mode and wake it up properly if I do it from the start menu, but if i close the laptop or try using the power button takes me to a state where OS is sleeping and HW is still awake, so i can't do anything apart from force it off. Strangely too, the driver on the site is overriden from another version i recieve from System Update app. But, with the version from System Update app, i can't even shut it down properly, the OS dies but the HW is still awake and fully functioning leading me to kill it pressing the Power Button. Anybody have faced the same issue? A:After update ThinkPad Yoga, 20CD cannot POST!

I wish they would stop pushing BIOS updates other than at the request and guidance of support, they seem to fail too often and brick far too many systems.       You can usually perform a Boot Block Recovery on modern motherboards, but I do not think Lenovo has implemented that technology on their laptops for security reasons, but you might still check with Lenovo Support to see if they have any options short of replacing the system board.  BTW:   Does your system have the emergency reset hole on the back side of the case, and if so have you tried unplugging it from the power supply, and then pressing it for about 10 seconds or so?  (see item #1 on page 46 of the Hardware Maintenance Manual) Hardware Maintenance Manualhttps://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/s1_yoga_hmm_en_sp40a26742_01.pdf

Hi there, hopefully someone can help me. Back when my laptop was still under warranty, I complained to Lenovo about the many scratches I was getting on my screen from using their pen. I don't press hard when I draw, and I even bought replacement nibs just in case there was something sharp on the one I was using. Alas, nothing helped. This didn't happen on the last tablet Thinkpad (X61) I had! At the time, I couldn't afford to send my laptop in to get it repaired. I was in the middle of a VERY busy college year. But now, the scratches are so numerous, it's really affecting my ability to work on it. Is there a way to just... replace the matte finish? Looks like it's like a screen protector to me. Is that something I can purchase on my own, or would I nee to take my laptop to a repair place to get it put on correctly? I tried to see if I could take the thing off myself, but I can't even get my fingernail under a corner. I HOPE it's a screen protector of sorts, because there's no way I can afford replacing the entire screen.

One of my end users has a ThinkPad Yoga 20CD-00BYUS. He's one of the few users in my organization with a Lenovo device. His hard drive failed. I've purchased a replacement, but don't have any setup/recovery media. Is there a way to obtain this? I can't seem to find a way to do so on the Lenovo site, at least not for a device out of warranty.

A:Yoga 20CD hard drive failure - recovery media

If the machine has been upgraded to windows 10, you can download (free) from Microsoft.  To obtain the media to recover your machine to its original configuration, you can call 1-800-426-7378 and tell them you need to purchase a recovery set for a machine out of warranty.
I will add that Microsoft does not make it easy to apply security and driver updates to a newly-recovered windows 7 system.  If you had win 7 and you ever want to upgrade, now is the time.

Hello all. My laptop used work perfectly until the day I decided to remove all the extra stuff by doing a clean install of Windows 10.  I predownloaded all the drivers I would need and then did the clean installation.  Now I have an issue with my wifi.  It randomly drops connection to wifi and is slow to start working again.  After coming out of sleep it does not automatically reconnect to the ap and I have to trigger it manually.  Separately (i think) when coming out of sleep, the login screen does not respond to the keyboard and I am forced to use the mousepad to click or a touchscreen swipe to get to the password field. What I'm seeking is an official list of drivers that are required for a clean windows 10 install on a thinkpad yoga series 20CD.  If order of installation is critical, please give this also.  I believe I downloaded everything available from the support page but just want to be sure.  Sometimes not all drivers are available when filtering by OS "Windows 10".   Thanks in advance. Laptop specs are:512gb ssdmemory card slot2.4/5 n/ac wireless 7260ac w/bluetooth

I am getting some very odd reactions from Internet Explorer in that when I browse various sites the information shown in the browser is often out of date, for example, on a message board it might show seven posts and then when I click on the 'refresh' button it will show the actual amount of 12. This doesn't only happen on the first visit to the site, if I leave and return straight away ,it does it again. Just recently every time I change sites I am getting a message saying: "this site doesn't have a security certificate etc" and the site won't load until I click "continue anyway" - maybe there is no connection between the two things, it just seems to have started since this browser information problem.

I have run all the usual security checks: AVG, Spybot, Microsoft AntiSpy, etc.

I have also cleared the browser of cookies and temp files.

If I go to the same sites with another browser there is no problem.

There is something anti in the browser because when I try to use my email account it shows message panels saying "can't continue due to xyz", these panels carry adverts and are nothing to do with the email providers - I have checked with them. If I use another browser such as Firefox or Opera there is no problem.

Apart from this, everything is working very well - I did get hacked and this brought windows to a standstill, but with help from this site I have got things running good again, well 95% ...just this browser to sort out.

I have a home-built PC that has been running ffor some time now quite well. However, a few months ago after performing a routine disk clean-up and defragment the OS failed to start. The only way to fix this is to do a system restore via the start-up recovery part of the windows OS.

If it is of any significance, avast found a rootkit in the C drive under Xaramin's software directory, under the name dynDNS.exe (I think but not sure, definitely had DNS in the name!). Could it be an infection causing this? Disk check was supposed to be launched during boot but I have seen no evidence of it happening.

The full PC details are below:
- AMD 8350 CPU
- Gigabyte 7950 Radion HD graphics card
- 16GB RAM dual channel at 1866mhz
- Asus m5a99x motherboard
- OCZ vertex 3 120GB SSD
- Western Digital Green hard drive
- Generaic CD drive
- Windows 7 Pro 64-bit (virtualisation enabled via hotfix for bulldozer CPU's)

Any ideas of why this could be happening? Also is any more information needed?

Thanks guys!

You didn't defrag your SSD, right?

Every morning my PC boots normally then freezes after about five minutes. I power it down completely then re-start it and it usually then operates correctly for the rest of the day.

Rarely there are BSODs with inconsistent messages - by which I mean that these are rarely the same,- "reference by pointer" being one.

I have cleaned the machine physically, re-seated components, checked for infections, updated drivers, run system file scans, reinstalled windows.. I'm beginning to think that there may be a motherboard issue but would welcome any thoughts.

Please provide this information so we can provide a complete analysis (from the Pinned Topic at the top of the forum): Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions Please use Option 1 as it provides Event Viewer logs.

Also, to help with figuring out the freezes, Please do the following:
- open Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc from the "Run" dialog))
- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on Administrative Events
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx
- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).

FYI - If we're looking for Event ID 41 errors (unexplained shutdowns), there's more info on that here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2028504

While waiting for a reply, please monitor your temps with this free utility: HWMonitor CPUID - System & hardware benchmark, monitoring, reporting

Finally, although this is experimental for me, you may want to try this report:

A:Strange behaviour from AVG

As far as i can see, there may be several problems/solutions:
1. Go to task scheduler, should be located in accesories. See if AVG is scheduled to do anything in that.
2. It may be one of the many bugs of the new AVG. If it is this, the only thing you can do is go to option 4 until grisoft fix it.
3. Go to MSConfig via Run, msconfig. Untick AVG if it is in the Startup Tab and/or the Services tab.
4. Uninstall AVG and use a different AV, such as avast or avira.

Dear Members,
my PC has Windows 7 and Bit Defender installed. Since few weeks when I switch it on I am presented with a screen where I have to choose which OS I want to manually boot (actually there only W7). After that, when I log in as a User I notice that Bit Defender is always switched off.
If I try to run Bit Defender in Rescue Mode at the start up I always get this message: "btd-LD01 not found". Furthermore my PC has become extremely slow.
I suspect I have been infected but Bit Defender cannot find anything but using TDSSKiller of Kaspersky I get 8 suspicious files that I did not dare to delete before getting to know exactly what is going on.
Any clue?
Michele Annoni

A:Strange behaviour of my PC

Hello Mikkihiiri -
Please list those 8 suspicious files that TDSS finds in the scans.
If you do not have them saved from the scans, then re-run the scan and post them.
I can find no links to ""btd-LD01 not foundbtd-LD01 not found"" so they may be your problem
Thank You -

A friend of mine has been having probelms with his PC.

AMD 64 3000 Socket 939
512MB memory
nVidia 6600GT
XP SP3 all up to date.
Norton 360

It started when he tried to run Disk Defragmenter and got a message to the effect 'Unreadable Security Data Stream".

I ran CHKDSK and the same message came up but Windows was unable to repair it.

As this did not bode well and thinking I was dealing with a software problem the data was backed up and as the installation was about three years old i was set about doing a re-install. As a side issue partioning the disk was also unsuccesful.

First thing was the installation would not even start the formatting process. So I tried to run Spinright on it. Spinrite is a bootable drive analysis and repair utility. Some people think its great, others dont like it but thats beside the point. Spintite did not get past the first block and went straight into diagnostic recovery mode and then did nothing. I have used this on dozens of occasions and never seen this before. I was pretty sure the hard drive was heading for bin.

As a final check I took the drive out and stuck it in one of my desktops and ran Spinrite again. Exactly the same result.

I looked at one of the screens that shows the raw data being processed. Again this would be the first block This stuff should flick across the screen like something out of the Matrix. See 1st pic.

What I actually got was in the section the raw data should have been processed was a blank screen ... Read more

I am using UK's BT Broadband, and it wasnt' working very well till last days, but it was ok, now it changed into a nightmare.

1. My router stats:

Showtime Firmware Version: 3.24
Line State: SHOWTIME
Modulation: G.dmt
Annex Mode: ANNEX_A
Startup Attempts: 1
Max Tx Power: -38 dBm/Hz
Elaspsed Time: 0 days 2 hours 16 minutes 7 seconds

Downstream Upstream

SNR Margin 11.3 21.0 dB
Line Attenuation 60.5 31.5 dB
Errored Seconds 2603 68 <----- What's this?
Loss of Signal 0 0
Loss of Frame 0 0
CRC Errors 5282 68 <---- What's this?
Data Rate 576 288 kbps

I had this kind of stats for months, but it wasn't working very bad, it was dropping connection couple of times a day, it was annoying but I could live with it. Up to a certain limit.... What might be the reason for this? I have conexant router and I've heard it's not very good, should I change it?

2. It all went worse yesterday
I didn't change any settings, didn't install any new hardware or soft, but now transfer rate is at 5kb/s. I checked for viruses with Avast (result: PC was clean), I checked for rootkits with BlackLight (result: PC was clean) I am also checking it with Windows Defender atm (nothing so far). I use Windows Firewall. Pings are slow, 1000ms to most popular sites on average.

After I turn the router off for 30 seconds and turn it back on, connection is good for 1-3 minutes, then it goes slow again... Read more

I am at a loss here i would be grateful for any help. I'll set the scene.
XP Sp2 slipstream
Asrock 1333 mainboard core 2 duo & 8800gts 2gb ram.
Fully updated windows and drivers. Scanned with uptodate avg and spybot.

The problem is hard to describe after a while of using ie, msn, wmp or office etc. Strange things happen as in the pictures. Then by closing say ie, msn the program goes away whilst this problem is manifesting i cant- Use crtl alt del it just gives the system error beep, right click on the task bar, start new tabs in ie. Its hard to get examples of the problem as the computer is so unuseable when it happens eg i cant start a screen grabber as they tend not to work. Starting programs like paint equally makes the windows error sound. Basically anything that uses the windows gui breaks. Anyway here are some pics. I'm sure i've had this happen before and i fixed it but now i've forgotten what i did!

First let's check and make sure that your Windows files arn't corrupt. Insert your XP CD into the drive and go to RUN. Then type "sfc /scannow" w/o quotes. Then let it do its thing. This will replace any corrupt windows files with good ones off the CD.

I have Win XP SP3. From 5 days, there is unknown thing is happening in my PC. Files in my PC shows it's extension in the name of that file.

Like Notepad file name is "New Text Document.txt"
MKV movie name is "Salt.mkv"
This happens with MS Office files, mp3, video, images etc.

I think there is something wrong in my PC. Help me.

A:Strange behaviour!

It's nothing bad, you can of course change that.
Open a directory you want, can be C:\Program Files f.e. but not C:\!
Then navigate (I am currently using polish version so I need to translate things; it may make a little difference):
- "Tools" from top menu
- "Folders options" or something similar
- "View" tab
and there you can change if extensions are showed or not.

I am having difficulty with RDP and was hoping for some suggestions. I cannot login to RDP outside the network, only from inside the LAN. All addresses are port forwarded in the router. The machines that I am trying to connect to have Win 7 x64 Ultimate. Here is the scenario and what I have done to troubleshoot:

1) All computers have static ip addresses on the local area network.
2) I have used an online port check tool and the problem I am getting is that ports 3389 and 3390 (the ports I have designated as RDP listenting ports) are showing closed.

I know that the ports showing closed can be due to a few factors, so here are the tests that I ran:
1) I can log into RDP successfully from inside the LAN, so I assume that the problem is not with any type of software firewall configuration. These computers do all have Kaspersky Internet Security on them, but I have no problems connecting inside the netwok.
2) I thought that the router wasn't properly forwarding port addresses so I took the router to another location (Different ISP) and found that RDP works just fine there.
3) Now I'm wondering if the ISP is blocking the port ranges so I took a laptop back to the original location and it works just fine so I know that its not an ISP issue. The only difference I can note is that the laptop (computer that RDP works on), is a 32bit Win 7 Ultimate machine and the other two are x64. Aside from that, all software and internet security settings are the same.

Any tho... Read more

Since your testing methodology is solid and you’re certain that you have 3389 - 3390 open on the router, it may be difficult to get any help with this. I know it’s a long stretch but I guess I’d go to Kaspersky support hoping that their 64bit implementation of the firewall is different from the 32 bit and they have found others experiencing the same issue.
Maybe completely uninstalling Kaspersky on one on the 64bit machines and testing again is good option.

Please post back when you find the solution.

Just to be safe, I would do a quick virus scan:

Also, go here and get SpyBot:

click the online tab to search for and download the updates, then shut down and relaunch SpyBot.

Go to the Settings tab > File Sets, and uncheck 'System Internals' and 'Tracks' .
These aren't needed for our present purpose, and you can always experiment with them later on.

Finally, after closing down Internet Explorer, click 'Check for problems', and have SpyBot remove all it finds 'Fix selected problems'

you may have to run spybot more than once to clear everything

Remove everything pre-ticked in Red
