Q: unable to run any anti-malware tools and also cant open any anit-malware related site

I have a default Yoog Search in my Search Engines, i try to remove it and set it as google but it would again default to Yoog. Next thing is I just cannot run 'sybot search & destroy' and doesnt let me open any anti-malware related sites. I cant download any anti malware apps. I am just stuck. I saw a post " Win 2K hijack issue - unable to run malware apps!". I have exactly the same case on my system.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I recently got a new client who needed help with his computer. It was silly of me to think it would be simple. I was up all night working on it.

His initial problem was that windows would hang on "Loading personal preferences" and would only boot in safe mode. It wasn't the page file, or any of the usual things... though I did start to notice that normal Windows functions didn't work properly, from MsPaint to IExplorer. I tried to run Autoruns.exe and Hijackthis and they shutdown as soon as they were opened. IExplorer wouldn't load pages and firefox would pop up and load the pages instead.

I thought I should just repair windows, which I tried to do and accidentally installed a second copy of windows on the same partition... I then deleted the second windows installation (windows.0), but after that windows would boot fine without safe mode. That was only the beginning though. I found the google redirect on there, a bunch of old adware and a mess of a disorganized computer.

The system also booted and gave a tapi.nfo error, I searched for this and got nowhere. So I went to regedit and deleted the line causing it. It doesn't pop up anymore, but that didn't solve anything.

I looked further into the situation and found that many others are having trouble with rootkit malware that shuts down anti-malware software.

I tried loading malwarebytes, etc, and even renaming the files and the extensions. It still all shuts down immediately when its loaded.

have you tried root repeal? it sounds to me like you've read that post.

Rerun Rootrepeal. After the scan completes, go to the files tab and find this file:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\UACxpqhxbvttn.sys

Then use your mouse to highlight it in the Rootrepeal window.
Next right mouse click on it and select *wipe file* option only.
Then immediately reboot the computer.

Then run a quick-scan with Malwarebytes. Keep rebooting and running quick-scans with Malwarebytes until it shows zero infections. If after 3 scans it is still not clean post the final log.

this isn't my post so I can't take credit for it but apparently it works
good luck either way. the entire post is called AntiSpy Protector 2009 you should check it out before trying this, good luck

Yesterday, I had troubles with Windows live messenger where it (still) says:

"Windows Live Communications Platform has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. "

although, the problem isnt about MSN. I found out that this problem was caused by having Malware on your computer. Hence, i decided to run a scan using Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (MBAM).

I noticed that my Avast was disabled and if i try enable it, it comes up with a window saying: the operation could not be completed.

My google searches also SOMETIMES get redirected to links that is clearly out of topic.
like if i google search the terms "malware wikipedia" and i click on the wikipedia link but i get redirected to some Myspace/Anz credit card crap.

Then this happened.
MBAM CRASHED after 2 mins of scanning -> tried to re-run MBAM but a window came up saying:
"Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."
I ran several other programs such as:
HJT -> scanned for 2 mins, then crashed (no logs were made)
SUPERAntiSpyware (SAS) -> scanned for 2 mins, then crashed
and same goes for any other programs that searched for any malware.
The only program that worked was TROJANHUNTER and came up with a couple of false positives
I also tried using Avira's Rescue CD (the one where you boot up with it and it does a scan)
A scan using Avira was also successful but failed to... Read more

Hi all!

Nowadays, we all have real-time running anti-virus, anti-malware and anti-exploit/anti-ransomware for maximum computer security, as well as backup- and disk imaging software, along with Windows Firewall.

And of course common sense and following Best Practices for Safe Computing.

It is also equally important to use add-ons in your web browser like i.e. WebOfTrust, µBlock Origin and Ghostery for additional security.

However, no installed security tools will provide 100% continous protection, even with a multi-layered security solution. There is always a chance that some malware can bypass everything.

Nevertheless, that is where standalone anti-malware tools can help detect and remove whatever malware could remain on your system.

And hence, my question is as follows;

Do you supplement your Anti-Virus with standalone Anti-Malware tools?

Thank you very much in advance!

Regards,

Hi. There is something going on with my computer, can't get on internet and many pop up messages, and I have tried to run MBAm. I would try logging in to safemode with networking and then run the scanfrom there. To log in to safemode gently tap the F8 key as the computer reboots and then select safemode with networking from the list. If you are able to run the scan in safemode then there's probably some infection that was preventing it from runnig in the regular Windows mode. If not then there may be a problem with the Malwarebytes. I have had a similar problem and I had to un-install it and then re-install it. I emailed their tech support and was told it was possibly a conflict between it and AVG free though I'd never had that problem before... EVER.

I suspected it was something buggy with the update that had come through.

I'm helping my brother-in-law by trying to get his computer back up and running. He apparently had Police Pro. I was only finding small remnants of it, not a lot of obvious files.

At first no executables could be run, but I figured that out. Now everything runs ok, but I cannot run ANY antivirus software, including Hijackthis. I have tried:

Kaspersky online
SuperAntispyware
AVG Free 8.5
Spybot Search & Destroy (which I could install, but not run)
Malbytes anti-malware (which I cannot install)

An interesting additional symptom: whenever I run Windows Explorer to look for files, it also opens my web browser and sends me to 188.165.18.19, which says "POPEO Info Auctions." I don't click on anything, but it keeps hitting that site.

I have looked in task manager processes, and no suspect processes are running. All Police Pro files and registry entries have been deleted.

What else can I run or do to be able to run antivirus programs again?

Thanks in advance,
Kerry

So, I'm pretty adept at removing this junk and do it quite often and i'm sure i could figure this one out on my own eventually but I figured I would ask while i'm at work.

I have a computer that i removed some malware on using MBAM and SAS. Nothing too bad and not massive infections, it looks like it was just one keylogger. The problem is, neither SAS or MBAM will update. I know usually this is a hosts file issue, or the malware is actively blocking the connection but this doesn't seem to be the case. The hosts file is clean. It appears that the machine is relatively clean and does not have any active malware running. I can visit the MBAM and SAS homepages as well as a multitude of other online anti virus scanners and sites that you normally aren't able to with these types of infections. SAS and MBAM full system scans are coming up clean. Granted they are not fully up to date, but they are not that outdated either as I downloaded the latest version from their respective sites. Tried reinstalling both programs after cleaning the computer and both still won't update. I don't need advice on how to find any possible and likely further malware as i can do that myself with the tools commonly used here, as there may be remains but i didn't see any in my first glances through combofix/hjt. but i'm just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on what may be happening here and why these anti malware programs are not be able to connect and upd... Some types of malware will disable MBAM and other security tools. If MBAM will not install, try renaming it. Right-click on the mbam-setup.exe file and change the .exe extension to .bat, .com, .pif, or .scr and then double-click on it to run.If after installation, MBAM will not run, open the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware folder in Program Files, right-click on mbam.exe and change the .exe as noted above. Then double-click on it to run. ***Another work around is by not using the mouse to install it, Just use the arrow keys, tab, and enter keys.Manually Downloading Updates for MBAM: Manually download them from HERE and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. Alternatively, you can update through MBAM's interface from a clean computer, copy the definitions (rules.ref) located in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from that system to a usb stick or CD and then copy it to the infected machine.

I picked up a machine (XP pro, SP3) from a customer on 9/1 that had an infection that would allow you to start an anti-malware tool (I tried Autoruns first, then Malwarebytes, and Spybot S&D, along with a few other items) but the program would be killed while scanning. Dear BleepingComputer.com gurus,

My father-in-law's XP (Sp3) machine has had a history of issues over the past few months, to the point of constant blue-screens, random shutdowns, had a 'professional' look at it. Then noticed some odd things:

-McAfee's Real-Time Scanning was shut off. When starting it, it turns on for a few seconds, then switches back to being 'Off'.
-Windows Update constantly shows the same update available for download (the current month's malicious software removal tool). Click to download and install it, it 'installs' quickly, and then about a minute later, the yellow shield/exclamation point is back, notifying me of the same update I just installed! (Tried windowsupdate.microsoft.com, and the filesize of this update that never goes away is '0 KB', very fishy.)
-Tried to install malwarebytes: on install, updated definitions with no problem, program boots up, but when you initiate a scan, the program dies and just disappears after a few seconds. When I click on mbam.exe again, I get the error:
"Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."
...So, I downloaded malwarebytes and installed on my laptop, copied the mbam.exe to my flash drive, renamed it, and pasted the renamed file into the expected path of mbam.exe. On first attempt to run it, the program starts. As soon as I initiate any kind of scan, the program dies... Read more

Hi guys,I've spent most of the day troubleshooting a friends computer and have made very little progress. I believe her machine has some sort of root kit virus which has hijacked her browser causing redirects when following links, and prevents common anti-malware tools from operating. The system is an XP Pro machine and i think its running SP3.I wasn't even able to install anything until i killed a process called MDM.exe (Machine Debug Manager). With that process running, every time i tried to install something, it would throw a "cant write to 0000x0000xxx" error. Now at least i can install some programs. I have installed adaware, malwarebytes and emsisoft's Anti-malware. Anti-malware had some nondescript errors during the wizard, but it still went in and i was able to run the scan, but i don't know if it was compromised. So far, only Anti-Malware has turned up anything, it found a registry key for something called Dominator which is some sort of key logger. i wish i took more notes on that, but it was able to delete the entry.I was able to get malware bytes working by renaming the EXE. The quick scan has found nothing and the deep scan is going right now. I expect it to be done sometime in the morning. i hope that finds something but i have doubts.Adaware didn't seem to find anything.I also tried RKILL, but it only closed one process that was unrelated. The hosts file was also clear, i don't think any new viruses are going to use that old tr... Read more

My computer experienced Police Pro and/or Antivirus 2010 which disabled AVG 8.5 along with Malwarebytes, Norman Malware remover, spy doctor and Hijack This ... I have manually removed all registry items and files that I could locate and the computer does not show any sign of the virus while in safe mode, however it still will not run AVG scans or any other malware removal tools, so my assumption is that there is something still running that I am not seeing.

I tried to run RootRepeal, but it crashes if I request Files to be scanned. I then ran Win32kDiag and it appears to have run below is the log. Any help in getting AVG and a Malware removal tool running would be greatly appreciated!!!!!

Hello vjc,Please refrain from making any changes to your system (updating, installing, removing, etc.) from now on as it might prolong handling your log and make the job for both of us more difficult. Please save this file to your desktop. Click on Start->Run, and copy-paste the following command (the bolded text) "%userprofile%\desktop\win32kdiag.exe" -f -r into the "Open" box, and click OK. When it's finished, there will be a log called Win32kDiag.txt on your desktop. Please open it with notepad and post the contents here.

Observation and question for the group...

It seems to me that installing or running an antivirus/malware scanner on a possibly infected machine and expecting it to work correctly is a big gamble.  If the wrong trojan/exploit/worm is running it can interfere with the scanner functions.  And often does.

What is the groups observations and experiences with the free commercial live bootable Antivirus rescue tools?

I am helping a friend with an infected Windows computer.  I downloaded and installed five different products one at a time and removed a total of 6 actual infections.  Then they found no more infections.  Then I ran a common and well rated linux based scanner.  It found a total of five more.  After removing them the computer now appears to be working correctly.  I do plan to ask for assistance and see what the group finds.  But thoughts in general on the effectiveness of these point and click bootable scanners?

Thank you!

I know I'm infected with some form of malware, as I have an instance of srvhost.exe listening on port 9050, opening TCP sessions to multiple remote (tor) addresses, and which contains the same text strings as tor.exe.
My AVG2015 antivirus has been disabled, and I can't restart it.  I tried to uninstall AVG via Control Panel, and nothing happened.  I have managed to uninstall it manually (deletes and regedits).
I am unable to reinstall AVG nor Norton 360.  The setup executable for each appears to be blocked, as when I run them nothing happens.  Similarly I can't install Malwarebytes Anti-Malware nor Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit.
I have been able to run AVG_Remover.exe from a boot disk, but it doesn't report an infection.
Any help greatly appreciated.

Hi all!

I would like to learn using anti-malware diagnostic tools, primarily by reading one or more books on this subject. Therefore my question is; Is there one or more books regarding this subject, i.e. on learning malware diagnosis?

Or is the only way to learn; to enroll at the Malware Removal Training Program here at BC?

Thank you very much in advance!

A:How to learn using anti-malware diagnostic tools - read books or enroll?

Hi midimusicman79 I doubt there's any real "books" on the tools that are being used on the forums, since they are made by members of the community (FRST, OTL, ComboFix, etc.). However, some of them have public tutorials that can be used to learn how to read the logs and create fix-lists.FRST Tutorial: http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/topic/335081-frst-tutorial-how-to-use-farbar-recovery-scan-tool/OTL Tutorial: http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/topic/277391-otl-tutorial-how-to-use-oldtimer-listit/Other tools (like ComboFix) have tutorials which are private and you need to be enrolled in a malware removal school to be able to access them. But for all of these tools, the recommendation is the same: you should go throught an approved malware removal training before using them by yourself since one wrong entry in a fix-list can cause a system to be unbootable. So the best way to learn how to read these logs, create fixes from them and learn how to remove malware is to follow a malware removal training, yes.

Not sure how complex this problem is but it would allowme to login or register to your site on the problem pc, when I clicked agree to terms it came up you didn't agree etc. Then when I registered on the other comp I still could'nt and can't login on the problem pc....

First, thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

Windows 10 upgraded from 7 on an old-ish laptop, and I seem to be having problems with my wireless adapter(s) and (new) printer as well.  The onboard wireless adapter will not turn on, and the USB adapter I bought to replace the useless onboard one turns itself off randomly.  I replaced the printer because the old one stopped responding, but the brand new replacement is not functioning much better.

I am unable to run almost any security software to completion...They all either terminate due to an error or run endlessly. RKill, CCleaner and AdwCleaner will run, but I cannot get Security Check, GMER, MBAM, MBAR, aswMBR, TDSSkiller, DDS, ASC or VipreResecue to finish.

Today, I began having problems with accessing documents in MS Word and MS Excel...nothing would load for a while.

I remember having a problem with Cassiopessa several month ago, but was sure that I had removed it successfully.  Now, I'm not sure of much.

Any help you can provide is much appreciated,

I am unable to install updates for Windows Defender, Windows itself and various anti-virus and anti-malware tools.
Sometimes the anti-virus and anti-malware tools even refuse to download and/or install at all.

When I do succeed in installing them, something is blocking the virus definition updates.
The programs do run, but can never update them after the initial installation. Result: I'm running with massively outdated virus definitions.

I'd like to avoid having to wipe the disk and re-install windows from scratch.

I've got a really strange problem, that makes it really difficult to post any diagnostic information about the problem. I've tried running HiJackThis, MalwareBytes anti-malware, Trendnet housecall online scanner, GMER, ad-aware, Spybot S&D, RootRepeal and dds.scr. The results are pretty much the same for all of these programs. The scan/analysis starts, sometimes it gets partway through scanning, and then the application window gets closed. After this happens, in the case of .exe files, the resulting program is rendered useless, in that further attempts to launch it result in a "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." and you also cannot rename, or delete the file.

Trend-net housecall is also pretty interesting, in that it runs inside the browser, and after it was terminated (part way through the scan) iexplore.exe now exhibits the same error in not being able to launch. This not being able to launch persists across reboots also. I then installed firefox.exe on the system, was using it for a brief period, tried trend-net housecall and now it too is showing the error in not being able to launch.

dds.scr is able to be to be re-launched, and it brings up the black command window type screen, but never brings up the notepad windows. It seems unaffected by the termination behaviour, and is able to be re-launched.

I was able to run A2 anti-trojan, and do have a log of what it... Read more

I thought I might have contracted a virus last night after some weird browser behavior. I was able to run HiJackThis and clear up some suspicious looking items - and I deleted a few temporary files that had that day's date. Unfortunately, when I attepted to run Malwarebytes' free program, it would not run. I tired uninstalling and reinstalling: it runs, but closes quickly after attempting a scan then will not reopen. I tried reinstalling by renaming the installer and the mbam.exe that runs the program to a random name, but got the same results. I'm not sure what to try next - obviously these hackers have skills beyond my meager abilities - please help! Thx!

I had some sort of malware anti-malware/virus software called "Malware Defense" (this seemed to be either the cause or associated to the cause of my problems). I looked this up online, deleted the registry entries, etc etc. Now It seems to be gone, but I still have issues.

I cannot run SBS&D, I cannot run malbytes installer, combofix installer, or HJT installer (though I was able to find an old HJT .exe). Presently the only other manifestation seems to be random (1-4 minute interval) minimizing of whatever software I'm using.

I had the Anti-Malware Doctor virus and could not download and anti virus programs because it was blocking them from being downloaded. I tried changing the name and downloading it from another computer using a thumb drive but each time it tried to install it was denied access by the virus. I finally installed Avast and it somehow was able to download and Run. I did a scan and removed over 100 threats. After this I was finally able to get the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware program loaded. Before running this, however I ran the rkill scan plus a TDSSKiller scan. After all of this I finally ran a complete Malwarebytes Anti-Malware scan in safe Mode. Then I ran it again in regular mode. This seemed to remove the virus but now I cannot use Internet Explorer? Its tells me that "IE cannot display the webpage". I think it must have removed one of the vital registry keys in IE or something. Please Advise.

I tried opening Ad-Aware on my friend's laptop and it won't open, just the loading box, neither will Avast open, just the loading box and then disappear. No errors appear. I tried opening them in safe mode, won't open. On the advice of another web site, I opened services.msc I clicked on start for the Lavasoft service but that didn't resolve the problem. Also there is another problem, perhaps unrelated, on startup this error appears "pywin32 stopped working and closed." Windows Live messenger wasn't opening either and the error "...stopped working and closed" appeared, but I fixed that earlier today by removing kiwee bar. Not sure if that is related either.

Windows 10 64bit, updated from Windows 7 64bit

Since shortly after the update, I have been unable to run almost any security software to completion...most either terminate due to an error, kick me out to BSD, freeze the OS ("Not Responding") or run endlessly.

I have been able to run:

RKill
CCleaner
AdwCleaner
but am unable to run to completion:
Security Check
GMER
MBAM
MBAR
Windows Defender
aswMBR
TDSSKiller
DDS
ASC
VipreRescue
FRST
I am also having problems with peripherals, specifically:
the onboard WiFi adapter fails to turn on, even with most recent driver downloaded, and
USB WiFi adapter I purchased to replace shuts itself off intermittently and with no seeming cause or pattern
old printer stopped working, computer could not locate printer.  At the time I assumed due to age and driver issues with Win 10, but
brand new printer purchased to replace has many of the same communication issues
At this point, following the directions in the Preparation Guide, I should post the results of FRST, however, when I attempted to run it, it ran for about 5 minutes (green bar about 20% complete) and then stopped, with a message of "Not Responding".
If it helps at all, the software it was scanning at the time was C:\Windows\System32\WINSTA.dll

I had an issue with Cassiopessa some time ago, but thought that I had successfully removed it.  That was prior to Windows 10 update

Any help you can give is most appreciated.

Hello again,
A few things to keep in mind while we are working together:
If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, I would appreciate it if you let me know.
If you are unsure about any of the steps just post what you can and I will guide you!
Please tell me if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
Please copy and paste all logs here unless otherwise instructed!
Upon completing the steps below I will review your topic an do my best to resolve your issues.
Please do not run any other tools without my instruction to do so!
==========
Okay, before we begin, you mention:

I have been able to run:

RKill
CCleaner
AdwCleaner

Could you please attach the logs from RKill and AdwCleaner in your next reply? They could be most helpful in this case.

If you need help locating them, please post back and let me know...If you need, I will give you specific instructions on how to find them!

You may attach both logs if you'd like to avoid topic clutter (again, if you need assistance on how to do that, don't hesitate to ask).

Also, please let me know if you have any trouble with the above!

None of the anti-malware programs I have will update and in many cases I am being redirected when I try to access their websites or I get an unable to connect message. Occasionally I get fake alert pop-ups (windows has detected a system infection run anti-spyware now etc.) tomorrow I am going to transfer an updated version of MBAM from another computer and run that to see if it turns up anything. Right now all my programs say nothing is found but they haven't been updated in weeks due to this problem, I am at the end of my knowledge so any advice at all is greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.

A:unable to update anti-malware programs

-- Some types of malware will target Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and other security tools to keep them from running properly. Other types of malware may delete the main mbam.exe executable file during installation or when attempting to perform a scan which results in various errors. If that's the case, please refer to the suggestions provided in For those having trouble running Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for using Rkill or downloading a renamed version of mbam.exe. Do not reboot after running Rkill. Immediately after running this tool, you need to perform your scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.Note: You may have to make repeated attempts to use Rkill several times before it will run as some malware variants try to block it. If you get an alert that Rkill is infected, ignore it. The alert is a fake warning given by the rogue software which attempts to terminate tools that try to remove it. If you see such a warning, leave the warning on the screen and then run Rkill again. By not closing the warning, this sometimes allows you to bypass the malware's attempt to protect itself so that Rkill can perform its routine.
