Desktop icons ghost attack

Q: Desktop icons ghost attack

I know the title doesn't really describe it. I mean, it is like ghosts moving my icons every time i start up. I re-arrange them just the way i want them. When i start my computer up next time, it is always the icons in the same place that skip, and move up a row. I mean, i have two rows of icons on my desktop. exactly. The two icons on the third row up from the bottom always move to the top of the third row. I dont get it. WTF?

~Lordbob

EDIT: Ok i was wrong. It is the bottom row of icons that move to the top of the third row, and the two rows left move down, but leave a blank spot in the third row.... its so wierd. and it happens after i lock the computer and log back in too.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

One way that works kind of simple is to download this zip file at the bottom of this web's information page.

Save and Restore Desktop Icon Layout in Windows Vista :: the How-To Geek

Unzip it
Copy the Layout.dll file into your C:\Windows\System32\ directory
Double-click on the Layout.reg file and add this feature to your registry.

Then you should go to "Computer" from your start menu and right click instead of the usual left click. You will then see the added option of saving your icon layout.

I'm running Windows 2000 on a Toshiba T8000 laptop. AVG detected 2 viruses (download.istbar.4.bl & downloader.small.13.bl) both of which seemed to be removed after doing a scan. I also ran Spybot which cleared some entries. I did notice that the desktop icons were changed, one said ' ! Secure Yourself '

After I re-booted, explorer didn't appear to be running, I got a blue screen with no icons. I can do a ctrl-alt-del and get to the command prompt via Task Manager, so I've crawled through the directories and managed to run AVG and Spybot again, neither of them show any further problems.

After virus attack my background wallpaper gone, desktop icons disappeared except for Mozilla and recycle bin and start menu nearly empty except for the start search at the bottom.Rogue.Fake HDD and Plum.hyjack.Startmenu attacked and I'd really like to get my computer back to being useful again. It believe my data is all there - I can access word documents by naming them individually or requesting into the search menu. I access google by searching for google.ca in the start search and I managed to find Windows Mail which seems to be all there - but its hard to function well without icons and start menu programs etc. I'm afraid I'm a complete tiresome newbie when it comes to this. I did get rid of the virus(s)(successfully I hope) with a copy of malware byes I had on the computer - it actually stopped working and disappeared from my desktop but I managed to get it back and I disconnected from my router and after a long time did manage to get rid of all the virus - 7 in all 4 of them FAKE.HDD and two PLUM.HYJACK.STARTMENU (according to maleware bytes). Can someone help me? Is there a way I can get my desktop and startmenu back to looking normal (or returned to its former condition)?

Hello,

Several times after creating a WORD document, and at times for other items, a "ghost" icon of the
saved item also shows up in addition to the regular one on the Desktop.

It appears as a very light, washed out, icon.

If I try to open it up to investigate, I get a message that Windows can't open this file.

Any idea why this is created, and what it actually is ?

Thanks,
Bob

A:Ghost Icons ?

It's information tied to the original file that Windows references when the file is saved. You're seeing it (most likely) because you have the "Show Hidden Files and Folders" option enabled. You can change it from within Windows explorer by clicking on Organize/Folder and search options/View (tab)/Don't show hidden files, folders and drives.

11JUL11 - Windows7Professional - 3 days ago my PC was attacked by Cybot.B which took 6 hours to remove. Afterwards, most of the Windows Icons, all my work file folders and Word, Excel PPT etc file icons were faded. Thanks to advice from this forum, I selected my "Apps" Folder, above My Documents, in Windows Explorer, then TOOLS, Options, General, and unticked HIDDEN. This unfaded ALL the icons on my PC.

Cybot.B came via a "Business Expansion" Site on Google, created the BLUE SCREEN of DEATH and an Anti-Virus Screen "Personal Shield Pro" and ran an unbreakable recursive cycle - "Continue without Protection?". Eventually after restarting in SAFE MODE several times, I could run Windows Defender (luckily available as it was pinned to Task Bar) and after the 5th clean up with Defender - the PC re-booted normally. But I am still finding virus effects - one being that on updating my website from folder Index_Files, it updates with a different Folder name - and the uploaded file reports "faulty" on the internet. I am about to run Microsoft Security Essentials for the 3rd time - it seems to find all the glitches.

Welcome Matterofgravity to the windows 7 forums.

You seem to have gotten a real bad one BUT, this is even one more reason to make an image backup of your hard disk. They say the most important 3 things in computers are BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP.
Outside of a complete re-install of windows, what your doing is probably the best remedy outside of restoring your windows image.

I am using Windows 10 so perhaps this is misdirected.  I will describe my problem because it seems to be the same with Windows 7 comments.
I have a Dell laptop Inspiron 15, 7000 series.  I have 2 additional monitors and I have docking stations at my primary office and my satellite office.  When I shut down to travel and then hook back up at either location, the desktop icons get re-arranged
in random order.  I do not change resolution manually but what I think happens is that any updates MS sends out and I have the computer process those updates, this changes the desktop icons.  That happens on occasion and I wonder if that is changing
my monitor size/display changes (from factory defaults).  Also, the re-arrangement of icons happens when I go from one office to another; no other changes done.  I would really like to make sure the icons stay in the location/placement that I locked
in on the laptop.

Im a first time poster and I hope I have selected the correct category in this forum.

I have Windows 7 Home Premium, pre-installed on a new laptop ive purchased in the last month. I had it set to automatically download and apply all updates.

Within the last couple of weeks, at some point suddenly my desktop icons stopped appearing and I noticed there are no system tray icons, ie volume, network, Power.

Ive searched these forums and found instructions on how to access the "Turn System Icons On Or Off" and the only option I can change is for 'Clock'. The remaining options Volume, Network, Power, Action Center are all greyed out.

I cant understand why I dont have 'permission' to do this and I wonder if it is connected to me not seeing anything on my desktop in so far as icons.

Also, I noticed I cannot 'right-click' my desktop space, which normally would have allowed me to access display options.

In searching these forums I found some references to Administrator permissions, but my User management area says I am an administrator.

Does anyone have any feedback for something I can check/fix?

This isn't a serious problem, but it is annoying since it has never happened before and I'm used to having a Win XP custom desktop.

Anyway, I can't think of anything new that I've done to my computer as of late except install Spybot and other spyware detecting programs (Hijack This!, etc.) but now, whenever I restart or turn off my computer, my custom icons revert to default windows icons.

By this I mean:

My Computer
My Documents
My Network Places
Recycle Bin (full)
Recycle Bin (empty)

I can normally customize these by clicking right clicking on the desktop > Properties > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Change Icon

But, just as of this week, they have begun to revert back to the boring default windows icons.

I'm sure this is a simple problem but I can't for the love of God figure out how to fix it.

Any suggestions would be incredibly appreciated.

I think my Icons got bugged or something. This happened after my friend asked me to move some music and movies from my computer to his hard drive. After I did that, i turned off my laptop and went back to my room and turned it on. What happened next worried me since I wasn't able to move my mouse, the Icons have an Icon that is a square white on top of each. It's an icon on top of one. I turned off my laptop how many times and still does it so i restore it on an earlier date. After i did that, My mouse started working yet my computer became so slow and the Icons are still the same. (white square on top of an old Icon and the icons when you click start are just white squares). I'm getting frustrated already since I'm nowhere near Bestbuy since I am deployed here in Afghanistan. Should I just send this laptop back home since I paid for the insurance anyway or is this fixable while i'm here? Please help. thanks a lot in advance!

The same can be said for the icons in the start menu. The biggest problem is that even if i run the icon such as firefox, before the icon has fully loaded, the program will not run. No programs will run until 13 seconds after boot once the icons have loaded.

Hi conrad,

Have a SSD or a HDD, if a hard disk run a defrag. or when was last time you did.

Use disk cleanup or download CCleaner which is good CCleaner - PC Optimization and Cleaning - Free Download

Check Anti-Virus settings, how it loads during boot or not, AV take time to load.
Run a full system scan.

Check startup items from task manager, in startup tab if use CCLEANER there is one on it too. I would rather use task manager.

Run error checking, can run it in properties of the drive or run a full chkdsk which is better.
Exactly as typed.
From the elevated command prompt, type chkdsk c: /f /r
then again at elevated command prompt run: sfc /scannow

If you're still having trouble after installing iTunes again, download THIS.

Save the .reg file to your desktop. Double-click it to merge it to the registry.

Restart the computer.

If the fix only opens as a text file (in Notepad), right-click the file (before opening it) and select Open With > Choose Program... Then, select the Registry Editor.

If the Registry Editor is not in the list, browse to C:\WINDOWS and select regedit.

strange problem. it happens for all my icons, but I'll use dilbert.com as an example.

I have dilbert.com on my links bar in internet explorer, and a shortcut on my desktop. In the past, the destop and link icons take on the picture of a little dilbert. But now, only the link in ie7 has the icon, the desktop icon has a generic windows icon that looks like a window with tiny icons in it.
I changed the icon by clicking properties and change icon. when I clicked on the icon to go back to dilbert.com, the icon on the desktop changed back to the generic windows icon. But in my browser, I see the little dilbert icon by the website address.
Nowhere in my browser do I see the icon that is being used for the desktop.
I have also put other websites in my favorites list, and then created a shortcut on the desktop. The website shows the correct icon, but the shortcut, shows the same generic icon as the one for dilbert.com.
I haven't a clue how to fix this. And can't find anything like this problem on the net.

My HD crapped out on me so I bought a new one. My brother gave me a copy of Windows Black for my new OS, so I installed it. Everything was running smooth, (installing drivers, hardware and such) until I DL'ed Steam. I noticed a weird box on my screen. I'd scroll up or down and it would multiply. "Oh great" I thought. Un-installed Steam then re-installed my video card. Back to normal. Re-installed steam, same problem. GRRRRR
Finally gave up on Steam and just started browsing for other software to get. Out of nowhere the boxes show up again, so I know it's not a Steam problem. Maybe a video card problem? Maybe a Windows Black bug? I have no idea, but this is what I see on my desktop.

1. I have reinstalled Nvidia drivers and DirectX
2. GPU is not overheating and is working properly
3. Ran AVG and no threats came up
The only thing I can think of is my OS. Maybe I can find a patch for this bug?

Hello there.
How do I explain this?
For quite sometime, I have been having a weird issue with images remaining on my desktop, long after I have moved them to a folder and off my desktop completely. Starting to make me nuts.
If I download or move an image to my desktop and click on it to view it, I will see images that used to be there. In order to view the new image, I need to move it around my desktop and find a space where the new image will finally display.
I would appreciate anyone's help with this.
Thank you.

My problem began when i was playing my xbox and talking to a friend at the same time. I was talking to him about pokemon and wanted him to watch a certain part in a random episode so i open up internet explorer and go to the website streaming all the episodes and then i get a pop up telling me that the page i was currently on was not safe and would perform a system scan. I immediately closed the window and everything seemed to be fine. This had never happened to me before on the website so i opened up internet explorer again and went back to the website and the next thing that happens is my desktop image goes black and every icon disappeared for only a few seconds and then re-appeared. I didnt know what to do so i restarted my computer and when i logged back on my desktop items were all still there but the image for mp3s, .rar's, and other files were all changed. for example i have mp3 files that have the image my avast internet security program icon which i have installed on my computer and my .rar files now display the mp3 image, but when i copy or drag and drop them into a folder they display their original images. I've refreshed my desktop, I've changed the resolution, and even changed desktop background image hoping that it would fix it but no luck. DOES ANYBODY KNOW WHATS WRONG!?

Hi, welcome to the forums

It is possible you've been inected with a Virus/Malware. There are a lot of popups that will tell you that you are infected when in fact it's the notification that's the infection.

Download MalwareBytes and berform a full system scan as soon as possible.

I am having this odd graphics glitch on my desktop after I recovered the OS from a system32 file corruption. I used the recovery console to repair the corrupted .dll file, and everything is working properly now except that every once in a while when I right click to bring up an options window on anything (desktop or program icon) and then left click on one of the available options, a ghost image of the option I clicked will remain on the desktop. It doenst interfere with program functionality, but is just more of an eyesore. I have updated all my drivers I can think of and run scandisk on the RAID setup. If anyone knows what is causing this issue and a possible solution, please let me know.

I have a folder left over from something I downloaded a while ago on my desktop named "Typing Assistant.". When I double-click it or move it to the Recycle Bin, I get the error "C:\Documents and Settings\me\Desktop\Typing Assistant. refers to a location that is unavailable." I've tried file shredders as well as other methods, but I can't seem to get rid of it. Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,

A few days ago Norton identified and deleted sillyFDC. I updated all the virus files and did a full scan, and updated all the Spybot files and did a full scan. I was certain they were up-to-date, but wanted to make double-sure. I also double-checked to make sure all the Windows updates had been applied. So, I don't really think my issue has to do with the "silly" but I immediately catapault into scared mode when there are blocked problems, like this one.

Shortly after getting rid of the virus (maybe a day or two?), hubby pointed out two different desktop.ini file icons on the desktop, where there had been none before. Both are greyed out, and I'm afraid to delete them, since it says that windows may get SNAFU'd if I do. How do I determine whether it's OK to whack them? Should there only be ONE desktop.ini file on my system? If I do a search on desktop.ini it looks like there are a lot of them, with a variety of dates on them. Do you know how/where/why they would have appeared?

Is there any other information I can provide to help you help me with this?

Thank you for your assistance!!!

If I create a ghost image of a system, can I then edit the image to remove things like network neighborhood and internet explorer from the desktop? I ask because I need to roll out ~40 systems to inexperienced users and need them to be as bulletproof as possible. Plus I need them to do work and not browse around the internet.

I have been told this is possible, however I am having trouble finding either the reg keys or the switches within ghost to make it so.

thanks

A:Using Ghost to remove desktop items

I don't *think* you can edit the image directly without performing another capture - at least I've never had luck modifying the image directly. You could always join them to your domain and manage the desktop that way - if you have AD in place.

I have been having CPU issues at 100%. I contacted HP.com support and the last suggestion they suggested was to update the video card driver. I have a Nividia GSForce2 MX200 (Compaq Computer) They sent me to a link to their ftp site and I followed the instructions to download, install, and do a restart. When I restarted there were no desktop icons. It probably means that whatever files are damaged are preventing the startup from finishing. The normal internet programs that launch upon starting up the computer are not launched and I have to manually launch them by finding them. I tried doing a last known good configuiration, and when that failed in safe mode I couldn't access the Start Menu to do a system restore. I tried rolling back the driver to the previous one to no avail. I called HP and of course they wanted to charge me since it is out of warranty. I said it was their file and I asked for a supervisor who told the tech to tell me the same thing. So I was stuck with chat support. We were able to try the system restore which didn't work. I went to Control Panel and tried cliking on Taskbar or Start Menu but nothing happens. HP sent me 2 links for some patches:
HP said in an email "Based on the information that I gathered from the chat session,

problem with desktop display properties

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Two nights ago I visited the web site Flash Fun Pages to find a joke to send to a friend who is sick with cancer. I did not end up sending anything and logged out. Yesterday, the background on my desktop was hijacked by this site. I ran Ad Aware SE and AVG both regularly and in safe mode, but did not find any viruses or malware. I also ran Trend Micro House Call but that did not find any problems either.

The problem was that the backgrounds were frozen at the end of the list, on "desktop", and could not be changed. I went on line to Downloads.com and looked under desktop display hijacked and found some freeware named Desktop Hijack Fix. This got rid of the Flash Fun Pages joke links and ads, but now my desktop display backgrounds are still frozen, although they are now frozen at the top of the list--'none'. I can choose a color, but I cannot access any of the background options, including the photo of my dog, which is my background of choice.

Interestingly, there are two users of my computer, and the other user does not have this problem. I can change the display properties backgr... Read more

A:[SOLVED] opaque titles for desktop icons can't be made transparent/desktop always act

I have gone through the 5 steps.

Attached please find the Hijack This log, and the 2 DSS logs.

I cannot post the Panda ActiveScan log from my first scan because I simply forgot to upload it and when I go back to the site all it says is that 11 tracking cookies were disinfected. But I am attaching the log from my second scan. Interestingly, there were 4 additional low level tracking cookies found and disinfected. The same 8 vulnerabilities--all from Microsoft updates--remain on my computer since the software does not disnfect these or offer the opportunity to disinfect them.

Spyware Blaster has been set up to protect everything on my computer.

But the problem is still that apparently my desktop is active and cannoot be turned off. I have run Iconoid and cannot make the titles for my desktop icons transparent because it states that the desktop is active. You can see in my previous posting the work that Cool Freak has done to try to figure this out before he kicked this over to "the experts".

Please help me. It's not only that my desktop is ugly with these opaque icon title boxes, there is something wrong with my computer that is causing this that we have not identified as yet, and who knows what havoc that might wreak in the future! Thank you very much for your attention and help.

While working offline, my Dell Latitude 131L goes into hibernate. When I restart the laptop it opens to a generic "Dell" desktop picture. There is no Start Menu or toolbar. No desktop icons are available. The cursor is in the middle of the screen, but is of no use. I was NOT installing any software or hardware.

I attempted to reboot, same screen appears.

I am able to start in "Safe Mode."

I attempted to use a Restore point, but each time (I tried several dates) it will not take.

I called Dell and we ran a Hardware test (Fn and Power keys), no errors were present.

Update: It loads REAL slow, taking about 15 minutes or more. But then I can not anything. After an hour of loading, I ran Kaspersky and no threats were found.

Restarted and got a blue screen that says
Checking the file System C:
The type of file system is NTSF.
The volume is dirty

Then it does a series of verifications that take a long time.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

The following steps will be a good start to resolving the issue. The first thing that you should do is to check that your hard drive is not failing. On a working computer, download the diagnostic utility from the hard drive manufacturer's website to create a bootable floppy or CD.Find the brand name of your hard drive. You will find this info on the label of the hard drive (most likely you will have to remove the hard drive from the box to read the label). You will also find sufficient info to identify the drive (the model number) by looking at the hdd code in the BIOS Setup Menu, and then googling the code. Another alternative is to use something like Everest or Belarc Advisor.

Hi
The problem I'm having is at start-up. Windows loads properly, but when it's finished I have no Icons, no task bar, and can't right click on any part of the desktop. All I Have is the wallpaper displaying, that's it.
I noticed on task manager when I hit CRT-ALT-Delete, that Explorer.exe is not on the list of processes. when I type in explorer.exe in the new task, I get a error that says cannot find explorer exe. make sure path was straight etc etc. I was wondering if you might know what the problem is and allow me to take the steps in remedy this problem. I think the explorer has something to do with the desktop not loading properly.
Thank you

The issue:

When running two or more programs, one of which is Acrobat X 10.1.3 and the other is IE9, on closing IE9, the last page visited stays in the Acrobat window.

I use CCleaner and went into Task Manager to make sure iexplorer was closed - including using Process Explorer to close the handles. Still the issue remains.

I have looked all over the 'net for the answer to what seems a common problem. Used all the words I could think of, could not find a single mention.

I have a screenshot if anyone is interested. Thanks.

A:Closed Program Screens Ghost on Desktop

Welcome to Seven Forums TexasBruiser. I've certainly seen that behavior on occasion with random occurrences, but not something repeatable. Is the behavior repeatable to the point you can try to troubleshoot it? If you close Acrobat and reopen it, is it back to normal? If you choose one of the bookmarks on left, does it then replace the IE "ghost"? This will be difficult to correct for sure. Does the same behavior occur if you close a Firefox window for instance? I have done a fair amount of tweaking to my set up. I have something that works well for me now and so I would prefer not to start over with a fresh install.

I have moved the various "windows" folders to my D: drive. (Desktop, Documents, Pictures, etc . . .)

Somehow in the process of moving folders around and making disc images and reinstalling the images I have created a quirky problem with my Desktop folder.

If I save a file (file1) to my Desktop it does not show up there on the desktop. However, if I navigate to the desktop with windows explorer, I see that file.

I have other files already on the desktop that also show up in windows explorer along with the new file.

If I create a file on the desktop (file2) it shows up there and also in the explorer window.

I have tried to nail this down by determining folder paths, but the paths of the files that don?t show up on the desktop and the paths of the files that do show up are the same.

[Method of finding path: press shift, right click on folder, click ?copy as path?, paste path into notepad]

Example:
"D:\ Desktop\file1.txt"
"D:\ Desktop\file2.txt"

I have noticed in trying to solve this problem that there is an additional "Desktop" folder sitting on my C: drive in the default location, but it does not seem to be accessed by anything. It contains one file that wound up in there inadvertently some time back.

Any suggestions as to how I could trouble... Read more
