T470 and two 4k external monitors via Thunderbolt

Q: T470 and two 4k external monitors via Thunderbolt

I tried to ask on Reddit but it looks like nobody knows the answer. trying it here where could I find a confirmation that the T470 with onboard HD 620 graphics can drive two 4K Dell P2415Q at 60Hz monitors when connected via Thunderbolt? PSREFs just say it can support up to 3 displays (which is cool, but at what resolution and what will be the refresh rate) and max resolution supported is 4K at 60Hz (again, great, but how many of them?)I was planning to use either the Startech's Thunderbolt 3 to Dual DisplayPort Adapter or Dell TB16 dock to connect the monitors, as Lenovo is not providing ways to connect two 4K monitors over the DisplayPortIdeally, I'd love to have a dock which can connect both monitors but as I understand current generation of mechanical docks does not allow to use two 4k monitors, I guess it has something to do with bandwidth of chips used for DP ports in the docks.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi there,I've got a new T470 and Ultra Dock and try to connect my 2 external monitors via DisplayPort but nothing happens.I tried to update the firmware of the Ultra Dock but it won't work because I got the following error message in den update.log: "Error description: Can't connect to Synaptics VMMxxxx DP hub IC"The 2 monitors were still connected to the Ultra Dock. So I connected one of those monitors vie HDMI and installed the Firmware again. Now I got the current version 2.33.000 installed. But as soon as I remove the HDMI cable nothing happens again. What else can I do? Do I have an issue with my Ultra Dock?

Hello, I'm trying to connect two external monitors (1920x1200) to my X1 Carbon 6th and only one of them actually works. The other one is displayed as a small square in Windows display settings. When I checked "Advanced display settings", I see all display adapters (3 total), but one of them shows up as "Display 3 isn't active.". I'm using a Thunderbolt 3 to dual displayport adapter (this one). Can anyone help me with this issue? Thanks!

After the time spent with Dell Support doing diagnostics and updating video drivers to those official Dell drivers on the support page, my new XPS 15 9550 with 4K touch display continues to struggle when using external monitors. I have two (2) Dell U2515H monitors.
I have updated ALL of the drivers and BIOS to the very latest files available on the Dell support page, including the newest Thunderbolt 3 driver.
When the laptop is NOT connected to any external monitors, I am NOT experiencing any trouble.
When the laptop is connected to ONE external monitor via the onboard HDMI port, I am NOT experiencing any trouble.
Trouble begins with the addition of ANY external monitor via the USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 port.
I have experimented with the following three adapters, all producing the same result:

Dell USB-C to HDMI (2.0), part number 047KD7
Dell USB-C Port DA200, part number 5KMR3 REVA00
Cable Matters USB-C to DisplayPort
First, regardless of which adapter. my laptop ramps up the fan for as long as the adapter is present.

Second, although the monitor works with any of the adapters at the proper resolution, all of the screens will go black about every 10-20 minutes and the displays will seem to resize and reset. In this process, about half of the time, the windows open on the monitor connected to the USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 port will either minimize or relocate to the primary display (the laptop screen). However, the laptop itself doesn't freeze. I tried running a YouTube video t... Read more

A:Trouble with XPS 15 9550, USB-C/Thunderbolt 3, and external monitors

This is apparently a problem with the Thunderbolt 3 driver/firmware and/or the Intel 530 graphics drivers. I see very similar issues using Dells new TB15 Thunderbolt 3 Dock. Normally when I'm in my home office I use my 9550 with the lid closed using an external monitor connected to the HDMI port. All works perfectly. When I try to use the Dell Thunderbolt 3 Dock and connect my external display to its HDMI port it is unstable. Sometimes the external screen goes blank for a few seconds. When the system wakes up from sleep or I reboot it it does not come up on the external display but I have to open the laptop and switch back to the external monitor. Basically it is unusable. Still waiting for Dell to fix the issues.

I have a T470 20HD running Windows 10 Pro. Both the operating system and all Lenovo updates have been applied. Attached to thos is a Plugable-brand USB3 dual HDMI docking station that's been driving a pair of Dell SE2417HG(HDMI2) screens. Or did, until I did the Integrated Firmware of Thunderbolt Function 1.0.12.0-N1QTF16W update, at which point it now only drives a single screen. Windows sees both displays but now can't use one. I've tested both displays and they work fine otherwise, and if I unplug one display the dock will "fail over" to the other display without an issue. Is there a way to roll back this firmware update, or am I basically out of luck?

Hi, I have a T470 laptop with the USB-C charger. I'd like to connect a DisplayPort LCD screen to use as a second display while simultaneously being connected to A/C power and charging my batteries. I am having a bit of trouble figuring out what my options are. 1. I could buy a Thunderbolt 3 hub/dock with a DisplayPort connector on it. I would then connect the charger to one of the USB-C ports on the hub/dock, and the screen to the DP connector. From what I can see, these hubs are fairly expensive, so given that I currently don't need to connect any other TB3 devices I'd like to avoid it if possible.2. I could buy a USB-C - DP adapter or cable, but I have not seen anything with some kind of pass-through function which would allow me to connect my charger. I thought daisy chaining was something TB3 can do, but unfortunately the charger does not have the ability to do this (I know a DP connection has to be at the end of the chain).3. The T470 has a slim tip charge port, in addition to the ability to be charged via the TB3 port. Perhaps a USB-C - slim tip adapter exists which would allow me to connect my charger to the slim tip port, and not worry about the lack of daisy chaining in point 2. I've found a different adapter (wrong interface and wrong direction), but nothing that can do this. Thanks for any info/advice!

Hello all, I am a solutions architect trying to solve an issue which I have never heard of before. Though others users are having this same issue, my experience has been different then what they have seen. First,The following are the Security options for Thunderbolt devices as per user guide

No Security: Allow Thunderbolt devices to be connected automatically.
User Authorization: Allow Thunderbolt devices to be connected after user authorization.
Secure Connect: Allow Thunderbolt devices to be connected with a saved key that has been approved by the user.
Display Port and USB: Allow only DisplayPort-compatible devices and USB devices to be connected. Thunderbolt devices are not allowed to be connectedI don't think this is entirely true or at least does not apply properly each time. My scenario:T480, T580, or Yoga x1 3rd genImaging with a standalone MDT environmentDevices come pre-configured from Lenovo with Thunderbolt 3 Security Options set to "User Authentication" Installing all the drivers in the latest SCCM driver packs that Lenovo offers - though the x1 3rd gen driver pack was missing on the site this morning. On some devices, this security option seems to do absolutely nothing. I'd say about 75% of the devices reach their destination and the user logs in for the first time as a user, not an admin, and the dock functions properly; monitors/mice/keyboard/etc. work. 25% of ... My office just upgrated to the the Zbooks with thunderbolt docking stations. Most of us have 2 monitors. Those of us with LG monitors can not connect both monitors using the Display ports or it locks up the docking station or notebook. If we connect one in the display port and one with VGA it will work. But the one in the display port drops from 1680X1050 to 1600 X 900. The one connected with VGA will have 1680 X 1050. Notebook will not let us put the display port any higher than 1600 X 900. This are the same monitors. On the old notebooks we had this was not a problem. Both were being run at 1680 X 1050. Please someone tell me what I need to do to get this to work. On the filp side some people have Bell monitors and this is not a problem with them. It is only with the LG monitors that we have this problem. The LGs are 2 years old.  The dells are over 5 years old.

Hi all, I work IT for a US HQ company and we have a user in our smaller London office who has a T470 and he is trying to connect 2 external displays to it.  Both displays are Dell P2210 https://noteboox.de/mediafiles/Sonstiges/Dell-Professional-P2210-Users-Guide.pdf which have 1 VGA, 1 DVI-D and one DIsplayPort. We don't have any T470's here in US that I can test to replicate his issue on. The T470 has an HDMI port and a USB-C port. He currently has one of the monitors successfully connected via a HDMI(male) to VGA(F) adapter. When he tries to connect his 2nd monitor via the USB-C the PC will not detect it. He is using a USB-C to DIsplayPort cable  USB Type C(Thunderbolt 3) to DisplayPort [email protected] UHD 6 Feet CableFrom all I have read on this machine, it should be able to use the USB-C and HDMI port at the same time for video. I don't want to just tell him to go get a different cable, as I'm not sure if there's something I'm missing here. The T470 does support video over USB-C am I correct? All the specs sheet says on the 470 is "Lenovo USB-C to VGA adapter, optional." This is not very helpful and does not specify if it will support video over other means, nor if this "Lenovo adapter" is a converter or simply an adapter.  Can someone please help me pinpoint where my issue might be? Thanks.

Anyone owns a P series Thinkpad and can comment on eGPU support? I wasn't able to find any certification on Intel's website or information on Lenovo's website.

A:P50/P70 Thunderbolt 3 External GPU

I don't think I've read where anybody's actually received a real P50/P70 in their hands yet from a real live purchase.  My own US order for a P70 was placed with Lenovo online last Wednesday night and confirmed by Lenovo last Thursday, but shipment is speculated at no earlier than 10-12 business days.

So I don't think you're going to get any firsthand feedback from anybody until maybe January.

But who'd really buy a P50/P70 with plans for an external GPU?  The graphics upgrades on the P70 are pricey, but certainly seem "adequate".

What is your plan?  Why do you want/need an external graphics capability?

Hello, I was using my samsung tv as an external monitor using a USB-C -> HDMI adapter without any issues since the day I got my T470.Since a few days, when I plug in my adapter, nothing happens anymore, as it is no longer recognized at all, using the HDMI port works fine though.I tried with a different USB-C -> HDMI adapter and got nothing either, so I assumed it is an issue with the port itself. Here are my thunderbolt options in the BIOS :   Then I checked in the deviced manager to see if the Thunderbolt controller is showing, it's not.  I redownloaded the Thunderbolt software from T470 support page and reinstalled it, version is 17.4.78.15Then I downloaded the Thunderbolt firmware update (https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/id/fr/downloads/DS121681) and ran it in Administrator mode. The update fails with this message "no thunderbolt controller found, or thunderolt software is not present in the system"  I saw in that similar post (https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/Thunderbolt-TB3-NOT-found-in-device-manager-f...) that turning off the option "Thunderbolt BIOS Assist mode" in the BIOS made the thunderbolt controller appear in the device manager, but this option is not available in the T470. Everything is up to date according to Lenovo System update software.Trying to restore windows to a previous point failed at each attempt. My current windows 10 build is 1607 (14393.2214) I'm running out of ... Hello everyone, I was wondering if the Thinkpad P50 will support external  graphics cards via Thunderbolt 3. One product that is available for preorder right now ist the Razer Core which would allow to hook up any GPU with PCIe 3.0 4x speed (but there are several other TB3 egpu enclosures anounced). Razer confirmed that the Core will no prevent other manufacturers from using it but that they might need to do some work on bios and software. I'm a little worried that the P50 might whitelist only some divices over TB3 (as we have seen before with some of the "normal" PCIe slots). Has anybody evidence that it will (not) work, or even has a setup like this currently working? A response, if something like this will be supported, from Lenovo staff would be greatly appreciated. Why would you want this?Spoiler (Highlight to read)Well, the P50 has a formfactor that is still portable and the M1000M / M2000M is powerful enough for work on the go and for some presentations. But for the daily work at my desk I would like to have a little more gpu power. The convenience of having both with one machine is that it eliminates the need to synchronize my softwaresetup and projects between a portable machine and a workstation desktop pc.It also seems like I'm not the only one with a demand like this. If you search for Thinkpad egpu solutions in various forums, you will find several reports of people that added a egpu to their Thinkpad W-Series notebooks. The problem with ... Read more

A:P50 external GPU support via Thunderbolt 3?

I hardly think Lenovo would allow this. The best hope would be Lenovo provides an official external GPU solution, at a premium price tag of course.
