I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have been trying to monitor my 13 year olds computer and he is wayyyy more techy than I am. I think he was on to me because today when I went in I clicked on folder, tools, options (maybe not in that order) but when I went to click on (I think ) options ;....there was a little icon on the left and when I clicked on it it would not open? What could he have done to it ? And how can I unlock it? I would be so grateful for any help?

Also, his MSN instant messenger has disappeared? it shows he has one unread message but his inbox is empty....where could it have gone ...is it hidden too? How do I find it/

I purchased a CD with thousands of pictures on it but for some reason I can only see the flash application that shows you the pictures. The program is 3 megs, the total size of the files on the CD that you can see is 3megs. But with hunderds - thousands of pictures on there I know that the disc is full.. I've already tried 'show hidden files'.. I am wondering how the people who burned the CD hid the files and how I can access the pictures...

Thank you in advance,
Ash

PS. The content is NOT COPY WRITTEN - They are pictures of scenes from famous tourist places in Iran. I lost all the pictures I had taken and wanted to post some of these on facebook to show friends where I went. - Just a heads up for anyone who was concerned.

I would suggest that you contact the company you purchased the CD from. CDs hold ~ 700 MB; there may be an extraction app needed.

Hi. I've a problem with an IP address that keeps connecting to my PC unwantedly and exchanging information and am trying to find any programme on the PC that is giving it access. I was recommended SOPHOS Anti-rootkit, which has identified an unknown hidden file in C:\Documents and Settings\Stephen Hills\Local Settings\Temp\vxfwlb.exe However, even with folder options set to 'show hidden files' I cannot find that file - nor does 'search' locate it ? Sophos doesn't recommend cleaning it up - but I wanted to find it and see what date it appeared on my PC as if it is in the last week it is probably connected to my problems. How can I find and if necessary remove that file ? Thanks

probably something really simple...im trying to clear up some space on my old computer, so first off, im checking folder size to see where the most gigs are hiding so i can hack and slash them away and maybe increase performance a tad...i start off by going to the users, i see that theres just 'owner' and 'all users' im thinking 'all users' is just all folders combined-references more to do with permissions than actual locations of files, so i check 'owner' and see theres about 24 gigs in there.... I open it up, and theres 5 folders: desktop, favorites, my docs, start menu, and WINDOWS. i check the sizes of each of these folders, and, surely not to anyones surprise the only one that has any real space taken up is my docs (the others dont come anywhere close to a gig) BUT...my docs is only 1.4 gigs... i checked 'owner' properties and 'hidden' is NOT checked...so it doesnt appear that there are hidden folders...
im thinking its something stupid like the 'owner' folder carries references to other folders in all users, like programs maybe, i dunno. any help appreciated!

Hello everyone,

I've been doing some maintenance on my parent's PC, and I suspect it may be infected with something. I'd be surprised if it wasn't, since they often do things like open slideshows e-mailed to them, or visit lots of Chinese websites using IE. I don't have any direct evidence of an infection, except that it seems unusually slow. Norton found a few things sitting quiescently in e-mail attachment directories, which it deleted. Running the various antivirus programs from a Boot CD (UBCD) found nothing. Also ran a few things like Spybot and Malwarebytes, which I think found some minor items. RootKitRevealer, and GMER found nothing.

However, when I used EZPCFix/Rootkitty to do a comparative scan between running under the installed Windows XP, and running from a Windows UBCD, I got a mile-long log that lists much of the contents of the drive. Originally I thought I must have targeted the wrong drive or something, but after repeating the scan a few times, I seem to be following the scanner's directions correctly. So either it's not working right, or this could be a strategy to defeat this sort of differential examination, by tweaking a huge number of files so it can hide among them.

Sophos Anti-Rootkit finds 90-some hidden files when run, all listed as Unknown, with cleaning not recommended. I've repeated it a few times, and while there are some items that come and go, most of the entries consistently appear. I can't ... Read more

Hello not malware... When you install updates from Windows Update, backup folders are created for the files that were replaced during the update. These are created so that you can easily uninstall a particular Hotfix, if it causes problems with your system. If your system is running stable and you don't need to uninstall the hotfixes, then you can safely remove the backup files to free up disk space.See Doug Knox

Hi,

I am guessing this will be either incredibly easy and I am missing something, or incredibly difficult to achieve.

But what I am wanting is to setup my system so that one partition has the ability to view all of the hidden windows files and folders and also hidden system files.

However at the same time for none other partitions on my PC to have this ability.

I can set this up affecting all paritions but there are some that I do not want this feature on.

I know I can laboriously keep switching it back and forth on the drive I want but I would not like to have to do this unless absolutely necessary.

So does anyone know any method that I can achieve what I am wanting.

Thanks

I ran combofix since i've used it numerous times before, but without a script this time. It never showed its logs, but it deleted the infected files. Then I ran hijackthis and found some suspicious stuff running.. RKill shut down some processes for me too, but I don't seem to be able to decipher them well. In conclusion I have hidden files all across my system now, my program shortcuts aren't in the start menu, except remote desktop connection.. I tried asking this question a week or so ago without any joy so I will try again! I am having to re write this as I cannot find the original post.

A while ago when using an other comp I came across a list of what appeared to be everything that was stored on the computer. It was listed in alphabetical order and was seemingly endless. Now I have absolutely no idea how I found this hidden cache and have been unable to repeat the exercise!

I have since changed my computer to one which I bought second hand from a computer engineer.
I would like to find this same list as heaven only knows what may be on here.
Does anyone have any idea how to find it - please?

I hope my second try at this will be more productive.

Thanks in great anticpation.

Hi all,

Can anybody please help me with this one. I see a lot of computers lately with the same type of malware infection. I am able to remove the infection with Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool, Hitman Pro and MBAM; however, the changes do not revert back. All computers are either Windows Vista or Windows 7. All of the computers have the following symptoms before and after the clean-up: Black background screen which cannot be changed via Personalize option, hidden desktop and user files, hidden or white quick launch icons, disabled system restore.

Is this a new type of infection? I haven't seen this type of infection before. Is there a good solution guide for removing this malware and reverting back the changes?

A:Malware Signs: Black Background - Hidden Desktop Icons - Hidden User Files

I had this infection yesterday. I used the procedure for "Windows XP Recovery" removal, which first requires the use of a program called rkill, before using Malwarer Bytes. This sounds exactly like what happened to me. Look on this site for Windows XP Recovery removal for the link to rkill and this will probably work for you.

I have created a control textbox in PPT on a slide and in the VBA editor I set the Visible property to false...... now I need to get back at that hidden textbox....

can anybody help.....

is there a way to unhide..... or is there an object browser that will show me every object on each slide????

A:Solved: Finding hidden control textboxes.....PPT

Hi Red,

If you know the name of the control, use the Immediate window (from the VBIDE, press Ctrl + G), type the name of the control, then ".visible = true" and hit enter. If you got the name right, after you type the . intellisence should come up.

Edit: OR, I forgot to mention, in the VBIDE, if you're on the slide with the control, hit F4 to show the properties window. Directly under the Properties window title you'll see a little drop down. You can select all of your controls from there. Select the text box in question and set its property as desired.

Hello,

I noticed yesterday that Avira is finding a lot of hidden objects. Also when I scanned with Avira, using complete logs mode, I also alerted me about over 100 warnings because there are files it cannot scan. However, I cannot paste this log since the log on complete report mode is huge (50mb!). This didn't use to happen during daily scans, i'm fairly sure that I have caught something evil. I have added FRST log bellow and attached Additions log + Avira log as attachements  I also did malwarebytes scan, but that found nothing.

I had reinstalled the OS from within the machine and uninstalled any junk such as games etc. Have Avast free, super antispyware, Spybot, all of which find no threat Have run Kasperski one-time virus removal tool and; no threat. Running Winaso registry cleaner some time ago revealed 500 odd registry errors that were fixed and a subsequent run some time later revealed few problems. Running Winaso again yesterday discovered hundreds of errors again.

Kaspersky seemed to have trouble getting past; PE_Patch.Juba, and Googling suggests there may be something hidden in there.

This machine runs well enough but Firefox not responding, and slowness on internet activity are symptoms.

Welcome to the forum.

The "Documents and settings" folder has been obsolete since Vista. You should be using the "Users" folder". The "Documents and settings" folder is just a link maintained for compatibility with old software. Windows Explorer will never give you access by this route no matter what you do.

The "System Volume information" folder has special protection, even from an admin account, and should not be accessed unless you really understand what you are doing.

Registry cleaners are more trouble than they are worth and should be avoided. The validity of the errors found is often questionable. Many will find errors after a clean install. Others will find many errors and supposedly correct them but after another scan it will find the same errors. They have numerous pother problems as well.

Hi liorshwa,
Welcome to the BleepingComputer's Virus/Trojan/Spyware/Malware Removal forum.
My name is Mako and I will be helping you with your computer problems.
Before we begin, please note the following:
Please stay with the topic until I tell you that your system is clean. Missing symptoms does not mean that everything is okay.
The instructions given are for your system only!
Please do not run any tools until requested! The reason for this is so I know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.
If you don't understand something don't hesitate to ask before running the tools.
Now let's get started...

First off, I don't think it was very wise to use ComboFix straight away. This is a very powerful tool that shouldn't be used without supervision of a security helper.
But anyway, no point in working on things that happened in the past.

Both laptops OS : Win 7

As above. I bought a new laptop recently and stupidly went to surf the net for a short period without any AntiVirus protection.

Soonafter, I inserted some flash drives to transfer stuff to my new laptop, but I realised that all the files in my flash drives are hidden and replaced by shortcuts.

I suspected a virus and inserted my flash drive back to my old laptop, which AVG immediately detected as a Dorkbot Backdoor. I recovered all my files in the flash drives already.

I installed and ran AVG full scan on my new laptop, it removed mostly Dorkbot Backdoors , trojans and 1 corrupted executable.

However, I tried accessing most Antivirus sites such as Norton to test, but I can't connect to it.

I think the virus is still present somewhere.

Any help is appreciated. =)

Update :

I've decided to reformat my new laptop since it is new anyway. It isn't a painful process yet.

Hello all!

I'm having this weird problem in XP. I backed up a 2gb thumbdrive and zipped it up by winrar. The contents were a total of 1.40gb. When I view the zipped files through any compression program (winrar, 7zip, etc.), I can see the files and folders inside. But the weird part is, when I extract them, I can only see a few files and 1 folder available (I have multiple folders in the archive). Visibly, it showed only 200mb worth of files extracted. But when I right-click the folder in which I extracted the files to, it showed 1.40gb. I then thought files were hidden. When I clicked to show hidden files, still nothing. To make sure the "show hidden files" was working, I checked c:\windows folder and happened to see hidden files, while the folder with the extracted files still showed nothing. I did a virus scan and spyware scan on that specific folder. Nothing was found. But still, invisible files. How do I solve this?

I hope my explanation wasn't too confusing. I had this problem for months already.

They look like they might be something to do with Windows 10?

I might have  typo in the warnings - i had to type these in as i cant see how you grab a report from avast.

Any ideas?

Okay so question recently did a system restore and it worked fine and what not but now my computer is saying that more file space is taken up that is not, I have browsed my folders manually and still only find about 35 gb's of stuff but im missing 100 gb's on my previous settings that would seem about right but I can not find the folders for this previous setup I have tried programs that come with the OS and some freeware ones and they can't find the folders and say that I am only taking up about 40 gb's but the nice computer says I am taking up about 140 gbs lol, someone help please!

A:Hidden Files that are truly...hidden!

Go to control panel, folder options, and enable "show hidden files and folders" and disable "hide protected operating system files". You'll be able to see all the files on your drive. To get an accurate count, go to C:\, go to edit, select all, then file, properties, and it should tell you exactly how much space all the files take up.

Well, with regret, I have to say I got hit with a virus. Every file and folder in c: and my external was hidden. After days of researching, I was able to find a temporary resolution with a program called Attribute Changer. I ran this program and then I was able to see my folders and files....well, kind of. The files and folders are showing but in a light shade for some reason. When I share the folders with another Computer in the house, I can see the folder as I did before, but when I open it, I see nothing again. Assuming that the attribute changer is doing something on my desktop that only allows that computer to view the files. Is this a temporary fix and if so, how can I get my files back?

Hello All,

I would like to remove the 30 or so files that are now showing on my desktop since selecting to "Show Hidden files"

They are all old excel and word documents but not sure if removing them would cause an issue

What are they/how are they created?

I'm on Windows 7 Home Premium x64 and Office 2007

Thanks!

A:What are ~$ files that appear on desktop when hidden files show

As far as I'm aware they are desktop .ini files that are written to the desktop whenever you make a change to the file so that the file/folder remembers the change.

If you delete the .ini file it will return to its default settings.

http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch001060.htm

Is there any particular reason why you want to show hidden files? Obviously, they are hidden for a good reason.

Try this workaround if you insist on showing hidden files:

Enable Show hidden files, folders and drives but make sure that Hide protected operating system files (Recommended) is checked.

This will keep the desktop.ini hidden while showing other hidden files.

A:Hiding Files (like Hidden System Files)

Hello,

If you want to make a file or folder hidden, right click on the file or folder, select properties, at the bottom where it lists attributes, check the box that says hidden.

Hope this helps

Hello friends,

I am in a bit of a bind. I simply clicked the "show hidden files" option on my C:/Users folder. Inside of 20 seconds, my libraries are all rearranged and none of my files are where I put them originally. They have seemingly vanished.

I downloaded ShadowExplorer and thankfully confirmed that I can still open my files when I refer back to an earlier restore point within the program, but when I go to restore the files, they don't go back to where I send them. I don't know where my files are, nor how to access them outside of this ShadowExplorer program.

I did try a regular 'ol Windows system restore, but those don't affect files, so the problem remains. Anyone have any idea what the hell I did and how I might go about fixing it?

Thank you immensely for your consideration.

A:Show hidden files --> Files now missing

Hello Snapdragon, and welcome to Seven Forums.

If you have not already, see if checking the "don't show hidden files" option will revert them back to how you had them before.

Double check the libraries to make sure that the folders you had included in them are still included.

In addition, see if setting each library to View -> "Sort by -> Name", "Group by -> (None)", and "Arrange by -> Folder" may reveal them.File and Folder Arrangement - Group by - Sort by - Arrange by
Hope this helps for now,
Shawn

I'd appreciate a little help with a problem I'm having in finding files. I suspect it might have to do with Libraries which I don't fully understand.

If I go to C:\music I can see any number of music files located there. But when using another program and their option to "browse", when I go to the same folder I see none of the music files. Kinda like a magic act!

Could anyone point me in the right directions?

Thanks. Jim

If you click "Start", "Computer", there is a "Search" window in the right corner. You can put the file name (Blue.mp3) or if you don't know the file name, put *.mp3

It will bring them up.

this is a bit of an embarrassing question but please bear in mind that I am a novice at this. I understand about FTP but how do you actually find FTP files in the first place? Is there a search engine in the same way as for normal website pages? Or do you just look for the FTP option when you are downloading files?

Thanks for your help.

Jamie

A:finding FTP files

FTP is File Transfer Protocol. As such, it is a definition for a mechanism to transfer files over a network.

So, there aren't any "FTP Files" since you could theoretically FTP any file.

I believe you're referring to "FTP Sites". Usually, FTP sites are maintained by businesses or individuals who would like to allow people to transfer files to or from them quickly - using FTP. Usually these sites are technical or scholarly in nature - like a computer company having update files on it's FTP site. There will usually be a link on a companies home page. Or a user might have an FTP server with MPEG or MP3 files on it available for download.

As stated, you usually have to be told of the existence of an FTP site or server. You could just "gues" however, this is the hard way.

FTP is "quicker" than using HTTP although file transfer is possible with both.

Modern browsers are capable of changing from HTTP to FTP pretty seamlessly to the user.

Older users (like me ;) or "power users") sometimes prefer the command line FTP which can give a little more control over the intracacies of the protocol. Some programmers have built this into GUI FTP programs such as WS-FTP.

Hope this helps.

Is there any reason when I do a search for files on my PC, as in START/FIND/FILES or FOLDERS that it doesn't find the files that I have saved within Outlook Express?

For instance, I know SOMEWHERE in my OE I have an email with an attached jpg. in it named PhillyJimmy in it.... but when I do a search of my hard drive (C) it will not find the file. Shouldn't find files or folders find that file name if it's exact?

Thanks

A:Finding files within OE...???

Hey BigDave

Yes, there is. OE is a database program - your emails are not files, they are information stored within the index files (.DBX). The only way to use search to find something there is to specify what text you are looking for in search. And for files, you would enter *.dbx.

However, if you know it is in a folder in OE, you can use the "search" included in OE.
Click Edit->Find Message In This Folder. If it stops at a possible email and it is not the one, pressing F3 will make it continue the search until it has gone through a folder.

I posted about missing files after malware cleanup seperately because i don't want to combine the two. I have a question about how to get rid of files i see in my Secunia psi program but never see them listed in windows uninstaller, Revo uninstaller or even Iobit uninstaller .

Thank you very much, the help is truly appreciated.

A:finding files

Hello -Since you have no record of Malware Cleanup at this forum, could you please tell or link us to that particular item -I think that one minor problem may be related to the IObit programs installed on your system. It is unfortunate that this program / company has a habit of confusing some of your files, and makes them hard to find. The first / best option is to remove IObit from your computer. Next uninstall Secunia PSI Version 3 if that is what you use. Then you can install Secunia PSI Version 2, and not use the latest Version 3, that is a bit more complicated. You may find the earlier version of Secunia is much easier to manage, and easier to handle for many people (me included).Thank You - EDITED to add Secunia 2 Link -

One suggestion was to change the location of where to search to 'everywhere' but this option is greyed out.
