P50 Display on blank (external monitor and touch still working)

Q: P50 Display on blank (external monitor and touch still working)

Hi, My p50 display just stopped working out of the blue yesterday. When i connect an external monitor or HDMI (TV) the screen pops on the tv or external monitor. Everything works fine. It's just that the screen on the p50 is just blank. To make it more complex, the touch is working fine. Just to be precise. The black screen is also during post and boot of windows so i don't believe it's a driver issue. The only thing i can think is that the display is broke but don't understand why touch works. Is there a way to reset perhaps bios to default or does anyone have a good idea before i raise a RMA?. The p50 is working still fine but just the screen. Thanks Ivan

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

If I unplug an external monitor from HDMI or unplug the Thunder bolt, after a bout 15 minutes the laptop screen goes black and cant get it back on until I plug the external monitor in and remove the video drivers or reboot in to safe mode and remove the video drivers.  I have all the latest drivers installed.  I just had the system board replace also.  If I power down the laptop then unplug and power back up works fine for hours..  Need help on this one.

A:Thinkpad Carbon X1 Display BLANK after Update - External Monitor Works

I spent a day working on an issue and want to share to save folks time.  Bottom line, Intel Graphics Drivers WDDM 1.0, 1.1., 1.2, 1.3 automatically updated with Windows and broke the system. BIOS and Lenovo splash screen showed and safe mode worked fine showing this was not a hardware issue.  Windows began to load and the screen went black.  I connected an external monitor via HDMI, pressed power for 2 seconds to put the machine to sleep, pressed power again for 2 seconds and it woke up on the 2nd monitor. In Device Manager, the 2nd (HP w2007) monitor showed up and there was no mention of the laptop physically connected display. I reinstalled Windows 10 and all was well until the auto-update occurred and I had the same issue.I installed Windows 7 and all was well until I installed all updates, same issue. I didn't think this was a display adapter problem because the 2nd monitor worked just fine and it was the monitor that didn't show in Device Manager.  Alas, my assumption was incorrect. After HOURS of selecting which Windows 7 updates to install, nearly 180, I finally narrowed it down.  I thought it was a Windows problem, turns out this was an Intel Graphics driver issue. SOLUTION: I used Revo Uninstaller to remove the Intel Graphics driver program and the system recovers.  Sadly, in both Windows 10 and WIndows 7, the auto updates would put the drivers back and the same problem recurred.  I was finall... I have 2 old acer al1716 monitors and I got a new PC a couple months ago. I have tried to connect both of them to my new PC. One of them works properly and the other one just flickers the screen for 1 frame and then turns black again. It shows the 1 frame every time I turn the monitor on. The light on the monitor stays green. This model has a yellow light that usually displays when there is no signal. Does anyone know anything I can do to troubleshoot this problem?

Hello all, If I connect my X1 Yoga to an external monitor, can I either make the external monitor mirror the built-in monitor and keep the built-in monitor's touch capabilities, or alternatively only display on the external but still use the touch abilities of the built-in monitor to control things as if it were a tablet?   Basically, I'm interested in knowing if it's possible to use my touch screen and the fancy pen even if I'm working on something on an external display.  Any tips about the best way to do this, and/or the differences between HDMI/Display Port/Dock etc. are welcome.  Thanks!!

Looking on the left hand side of my laptop there is a port with a lightning sign next to it, is that called Thunderbolt? and is that my monitor/display port? and what lead do I need? it looks like some sort of micro socket!

Dear All, Hope all of you are very good! My name is Eduardo and I'm from Brazil. I have a ultrabook U310 touch from Lenovo, s/n QB06816995, and I am in a terrible problem! The screen of this ultrabook is broken and I'm using an external VGA monitor at this moment. I have connected the external VGA monitor in the HDMI port of the ultrabook using a HDMI/VGA cable. Using an external monitor I'm not able to see the BIOS or boot screens when I turn on the ultrabook. The first screen that I have seen is the Windows logon (maybe because in that moment, the operating system has sent a signal to an external monitor and in the boot this situation doesn't happen). The problem is: I want and I have to install a new operating system in this ultrabook once I can't enter into the original SO anymore, and for doing that, I have to access the BIOS and change the priority of booting in order to use a windows bootable pendrive or DVD. I have already tried to do the following steps: 1) to use the keys to change from the main screen to an external monitor; 2) disconnect the battery for 15 seconds and drain the energy in order to do the first step again; 3) remove the HDD and connect it in another computer to format it using a wintohdd software and assemble it again in the ultrabook; 4) to do the third step without using the wintohdd software; 5) look at the youtube and try to find some videos where I could watch someone doing something i... Hi, my external display lost ability to fall into sleep after inactivity timeout is reached. It just turns to black screen, apparent the display is active (I don't use the blank screen screensaver). The display only switches to standby if I unplug the signal cable. Withal it was able to switch into full standby earlier. So something had to change.

I did walk through monitor menu to find if there's some settings for power saving mode, there's none.
Connected via HDMI. Have searched a bit for this problem and found only this be closest to my problem: windows 7 - Monitor doesn't sleep on power off - Super User but the topic doesn't have a solution for me (I don't see any DPMS or power off options, probably for that BIOS is in UEFI mode).

powercfg /availablesleepstates gives this report

Code:
The following sleep states are available on this system:
Standby (S3)
Hibernate
Hybrid Sleep
Fast Startup

The following sleep states are not available on this system:
Standby (S1)
The system firmware does not support this standby state.

Standby (S2)
The system firmware does not support this standby state.

Standby (Connected)
The system firmware does not support this standby state.

Any resolution on this issue?

A:External LCD display won't fall into sleep (only blank)

Do you have another monitor to try? It sounds like the graphics card realizes the computer is idle, and so it stops sending data to the monitor, but the monitor seems not to understand it needs to go into standby mode.

Swapping monitors with another computer will reveal if the problem is with your monitor, or your computer, depending on if the problems moves to the 2nd computer with your monitor, or stays with your computer with the 2nd monitor.

When I put my laptop to sleep, the display would not turn on.  However, the HDMI output still works with an external monitor.  I reset Windows and the display worked fine again.  Then, after putting the computer to sleep, it went black again.  I don't want to reset Windows as there appears to be some type of bug in the BIOS/Windows drivers/Intel drivers.  Has anyone experienced this type of issue and been able to resolve it?

So, recently my computer's files got corrupted (I think). I was loaded up CS:S as usual, joined a server I love playing on and waited until I downloaded the map. I waited 10 minutes and guessed it wasn't responding, so I tried to force close it's process "hl2.exe" multiple times, but it didn't close, so I force shut off my laptop 5 minutes later. When I booted it - windows recovery showed up. I shrugged it off and let it do it's work. 1 hour later my laptop shut down and tried to run it again but system recovery runs for 5 seconds. Then I tried booting up in safe mode, but it also redirected me to system recovery. Then I got on my other laptop and downloaded a windows 7 iso. I burned it onto my usb and messed with some BIOS settings to boot the usb on start up. I exitted and saved my BIOS settings and booted up my computer, but after that my laptop didn't display anything. Any help?

P.S: I am using an LG monitor with a VGA cable because my laptop's screen is cracked from the inside and I've been using the vga connected monitor ever since without any problems and got used to it sooner or later. I also tried connecting my laptop with a HDMI cable to my tv, but it didn't work whatsoever.

Thanks in advance

Alright, this one has me stumped.

On my desktop PC that I leave on all the time I have the "Turn off the display" set to 30 minutes and works as advertised. The computer itself is never put into a sleep or hibernation state. However upon waking up the display it turns back on the monitor but displays nothing but a black screen. Same on secondary monitor, it is on and outputting nothing more than a black screen. No mouse cursor, no nothing. This worked just fine under Windows 7 with the exact same video driver (tried both AMD Catalyst 12.10 and AMD Catalyst 12.11 Beta11).

Looking around online I see some people having a black screen issue from a full hibernation state but like I said above I don't use hibernation at all. Granted, I can just manually turn off my monitor all the time but eventually I'd wear out that switch and the automatic "Turn off the display" has always been a great feature of Windows operating systems.

Any ideas?

A:Display always blank after waking monitor

Is the monitor on the right source? DVI/VGA, sometimes they will switch to a secondary source if another goes idle. This should only happen if you have more than one device connected to the monitor. Try disconnecting any other devices and see if that helps.

Hello,we got shipment of X250s and Pro Docks 40A10090EU to company but we have problem with connection via DVI to external display. When laptop is docked, lid closed and it is started by power button on dock, external display is blank. Then I open lid, both - external and system are still blank. Only option is power off the laptop. There is no problem if we power on in dock with open lid. With VGA or DP cable it is OK also.Important thing is we have own image with Windows 8.1 64bit. Factory image with Windows 7 is working fine.- its not only one machine. i tried more laptops, docs, monitors, cables with different set up- by default we took SCCM driver package from Lenovo site for image- after finding problem I install every possible driver for GPU, dock, bios - firstly by System Update then manually- i have tried change setting in bios (config->boot display) with no result Any advice?

I was moving our Dell Studio 17 laptop and the screen went blank. I thought it did a power save or something. But I could not get it redisplay anything..no flickers, nothing.

I rebooted, nothing.

I opened up the back and reseated the ram and verified the hard drives were secure. I vacuumed out any dust. No difference.

So I tried using the HDMI with our TV and it displays just fine. I try to toggle the screen (function F8 on my laptop) and it makes no difference. HDMI is always shown.

In the past when we use the HDMI to display netflix movies on our TV, I hookup the HDMI and the laptop automatically switches to the HDMI display and turns off the laptop display. When I unplug the HDMI, it wouldnt turn the laptop screen back on. I would have to reboot with the HDMI disconnected for the display to come back.

Now rebooting doesnt not bring the screen back.

Anything else to try? are there settings somewhere forcing the laptop to not send info to its own screen? BIOS?

This laptop has an ATI card and uses the latest drivers. It does have the Catalyst control center where it detects the displays. It seems the 'unknown' laptop screen and TV (when HDMI is connected, the only way I can see the screen at this time)..but it calls them duplicates and calls both of them #1 display.

Thanks for the help

Going nuts trying to get a new ASUS external monitor to work via HDMI cable with my Dell laptop. The Intel Graphics control panel recognizes the connection to the external monitor, identifies it correctly by brand and model, and allows me to adjust all the settings I would expect: refresh rate, resolution, output to clone/extended/laptop only/monitor only, etc. I can even move the mouse over to the extended monitor, take a screenshot, and see what the laptop 'thinks' it's displaying to the monitor. It's just that the monitor is blank, telling me "HDMI1 (or HDMI2) NO SIGNAL".

I've verified that the HDMI cable and ASUS monitor are functioning properly by attaching them to a different laptop
I've verified that the Dell laptop in question has the same problem with a different external monitor
I have not verified whether or not the Dell laptop in question will successfully display to an external monitor using a VGA connection (I'm ordering an HDMI-VGA adapter after I hit 'post' on this post.)

Hey Everyone! Trying to get an idea of what order to start throwing parts at this thing. Like the title says, my screen on the Yoga 2 Pro is blank. I am guessing I probably need to buy a new screen, but was wondering if I could have a cable issue before I spend $150 on a screen.  Couple of interesting things:In the device manager, only the external display is in the "Monitor" list. I don't have an option to mirror displays in the graphics properties or anything. My compupter just things there's one monitor, the external one.  I was having flickering issues leading up to the screen going out. Flickering only occured on battery.  Any thoughts?

Bought DELL XPS 15-9550 with intel Core i7, 16G RAM, 1TB SSD HD, with Nvidia-GeForce GTX 960M from Best Buy last November.
Connected to external monitor HP2311xi through the HDMI.
Issue:

Reset the display by clicking detect and the laptop screen come back alive, and then after 5 to 6 same thing happened
Talk to Geek Squad. Change the cable, update the Intel HD graphics drive, reinstall and uninstall. Still happening
Update BIOS to the latest available still not solve the issue
Even after letting it in single display mode, the blanking keep continue. It is very annoying and distracting while working.
Any one encounter the same issue.  Please share the resolution
Thank you

I am having the same issue with my XPS 15-9550 with Nvidia combined graphics connected to a Dell UP3216Q external monitor.
Typically when interacting with apps, i.e. scrolling in MS Edge browser, the external monitor blacks out for a few seconds. It is very intermittent, and tends to occur several times within a 30 second period then it will stop for a while. Acts like bad HDMI cable connection. I have the same issue with multiple cables, although it could be the receiving connector on either the laptop or the monitor.
Have changed drivers on both the Nvida and intel adapters with no change in behavior. Changed resolution, frame rate, etc.
The problem renders the system unusealbe and I will have to return both the laptop and display if not resolved soon.

It's a HP envy 15-j112tx running windows 8. With a hdmi connection i tried to connect to an external monitor. The monitor was previously using vga to a desktop, i unplugged that and connected my dvi cable to the dvi port. The monitor says check video connection then goes to sleep. I connected the cables with the laptop turned off and again with the laptop already on. The monitor still says check video connection. The connection is secure, it is a new cord. I pressed the F4 button to switch between screens and waited inbetween presses but still nothing.

It is still under warranty. I disabled the nvidia graphics card a few days ago to try n save on power usage, as it also has an intel graphics card. It has worked fine for a few days since i did that.
Now that i've powered it on/off about 5 times the hard drive stops whirring after about a minute, yet the power button light remains on. It no longer turns off when i hold power for even a minute. I dont want to kill the thing.

Can anyone help me, i can't find an answer in previous threads.

A:External monitor wont work to fix blank screen HP envy

I have the same issue on my Envy-1130LA, white screen after power up and the external monitor doesn't work.

I bought a new flex cable to test if it works.

Are you already repaired your laptop? Please share your experience.

(HP 2000 Notebook PC / Windows 8.1, 64 Bit) Blank screen always, external monitor works fine. What components could be malfunctioning? This occured about six  months ago, approximately one week after the one year warranty expired. Nonfortuitous.

Hi, As you are confirming that issue is intermittent, and now its working fine, it means that issue would be of display cable. The display cable would be loose. Issue can be fixed by refixing the display cable, if the issue persists then the display cable needs to be replaced. This is the only reason, I asked you in the previous post whether issue was intermittent or display view changed while moving the display lid. This particualr issue has nothing to do with the temperature. Regards,Sumit I am an HP Employee

A:Asus monitor not working as external monitor for notebook

See if this helps:

Extending the desktop to the attached monitor with Microsoft Windows Right-click the desktop, and then click Properties.
In the Display Properties dialog box, select the Settings tab.
Click the Display list and select your external monitor.
Note: For help identifying the monitors, click Identify.
Select Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor, then click Apply or OK.

Hello,

A few days ago I was trying to get my tv to act as a monitor so that I could watch movies on it through my win7 PC. It kept showing up as a black screen with the cursor on it, or weird bits of my desktop, so as I was trying to get it to work I played around with my display settings and set extended display mode on.

Now, if I boot into windows regularly, it is just a black screen, and if I connect the TV and the monitor, the TV is a black screen and the monitor goes into sleep mode (no input). My display works fine in safe mode, and I have tried changing the safe mode resolution (which doesn't carry over) and using regedit to change the x/y resolution values for normal mode, but that did nothing. The most annoying thing is that if I try to boot into VGA mode my monitor also goes into sleep mode.

I have an AMD Radeon HD 5670 graphics card and would greatly appreciate any help

Most solutions involve "reflow of video card". I am a computer tech in my town and have never heard of this process. Please explain.

A:No Video either on display or external monitor

Don't do it. A reflow is a very crude fix that will not last even if it seems to work temporarily, It involves blowing heat directly onto the video chip to melt the solder and reestablish lost connections. Real tech shops do a "reball" which properly applies the video chip back to the motherboard. We don't really hear about "reflows" any more. That was about a specific model series almost 10 years ago and I am not aware of your model having similar issues. If the video is dead, then your best bet is a new motherboard. You can also find shops that have a presence on eBay that have professional equipment needed to rework a motherboard at the chip level and their services are about $60-100 to rebuild your motherboard.

This is a real tricky one, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Basically the problem is:

We have a laptop, which like many laptops has an external display connector (standard 15 pin D-SUB VGA) but also like many laptops looks for an external monitor & if it can't find one (presume via the sense lines) disables the external output.

3 Modern flat panel displays I have tried work fine but 3 older CRT's do not (they come up initially when the computer boots then at a point it the startup when it does the check the external signal shuts off). I have to get it working with one of the CRT's.

Yes, I can force it to output with keys function/F12 but it has to be an unattended feature during power cycling.

In the cable can I short a combination os sense pins to mimic the newer screens so that the external VGA output is always on.

I have tried shorting pin 11 (Sense ID 0) to ground and pins 4/11/12 (sense ID 0,1 and 2) simultaneously to ground but still the laptop does not detect the monitor.

This should be really simple but it isn't I have spent hours and hours researching on the Net to no avail.

Hope someone can help.

Lee Gibson
