Preferred Solution: Right click/properties question

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Right click/properties question

The only thing that I've seen, if you copy the file, the copy will get a new created date. The same when downloading from your camera. Move the files(not a good idea) and the date the photo was taken is the Created Date. Copy them and you get today's date.

Have you copied or edited the photos?

You know how if you want to change your screen saver or view your desktop settings, you right click on the desktop and select properties? Nothing happens when I do that now. I have tried running registry cleaners and have rebooted my machine several times.

My guess is that it is the registry's fault. Anyone have any ideas?

Hey guys,

Been having an issue where upon right clicking (a file, folder, drive, you name it) and clicking properties Windows Explorer will crash.

Heard people were having a similar problem when only right clicking, many solved this by going into their registry and deleting some values. Since their problem was similar to mine, I went ahead and deleted some values under

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers

however, this doesn't seem that is the problem. Any ideas?

UPDATE: After running sfc/scannow I receive a BSOD, upon reboot the following message is displayed. Also I've attached the dump file

Thanks for even reading this, any help is extremely appreciated,

Camaren

Hi, whenever I right click on my desktop and click properties nothing ever pops up. Then I go into control panel and click change screensaver (which is in the properties) and that pops up (the properties window) but when I click the change desktop tab the window closes instantly. I believe that the problem has something to do with the desktop part of the properties.

If i remember correctly, Glary Utilities makes a back up, go ahead and reinstall that, and then post back how that worked. You may end up doing a system restore if that does not repair those drivers.

Hey guys,

Usually I edit my mp3 information by right clicking on the mp3 file and going to 'advanced summary'. This lets me put in the song title, artist, track number, album etc.

However, I recently went in to try and do that...and discovered that the summary section has almost disappeared! All I get now is Track Number, title, and comments. and thats it. I'm afraid to touch those in case it wipes the information i've put into my previous songs. The information is still there... i can see it in winamp and wmp10. Just can't see it by right clicking anymore.

Another forum told me to re-register a DLL: regsvr32 shimgvw.dll
Which I did. And it did nothing

Any other ideas on this?

This occurs intermittently on my Win7 Enterprise installation. Double-clicking on a folder in Explorer opens the properties dialog for the folder, as if I'd right-clicked and then selected properties. Single-clicking works fine and only Explorer acts strangely. The mouse is a vanilla Logitech RX1000. Putting the computer to sleep then waking it again eliminates the problem (until it happens again, about once or twice a day) or it may sort itself out after 10 or 20 minutes. It's rather annoying.James

Hi,

First, I would like to confirm when the issue began to occur. Have any new program or hardware installed on the computer?

You can refer to the following steps to troubleshoot the issue.

1. Please replace another mouse, such as PS/2 mouse or USB mouse. Does the issue when using other mouse?

2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode and double click a folder for test. If the issue persists, please let me know. Otherwise, let's restart the computer in Normal Mode and perform a Clean Boot.

Thanks,

I startup the computer. I click on a desktop item, and it will show me properties menu for that item instead of opening the program. I cannot hit on START, it flashes and disappears. Found if I hit CTRL and Start, it opens. Tried to do a System Restore, but I could not click on the Next button. I could not do a SAFE BOOT...could not get to that screen...followed instructions, but it did not run like the computer's instructions (so believe this must be affected also?). I do not know how to fix.

This computer does not have internet access. This happened once before over 6 months ago) after running a DVD. Some how I fixed it (also removed the DVD). Do not remember what I did. And it is doing the same now. They have not run that DVD again.

Any ideas of how to fix. I am assuming it is a Windows XP setting problem. But am not sure what or where or how to correct.

I have a neighbors computer a Dell Dimension 4300 with 4 gig of Ram and an almost empty 60 gig H/Drive
The problem I am trying to rectify is a very very slow to load Right Click Screen Properties.

When you right click on the desktop an hour glass comes up and it takes 30 seconds or longer before screen properties will open.

I have cleared the cache and all TEMP folders including %TEMP% from the run window.
I have defragged the H/Drive.

I have run several SpyWare programs such as SpyBot and nothing leaps out as to why this PC is slow to load screen properties.

I have also tried using MSCONFIG and deleting all the start up items.

There are no "Heavy Duty" programs running on this PC and is primarily used for email and card games such as (Hoyles)

Runs AVG Free for virus protection

I have had an on going issues with Vista crashing and then restart, some times it does it so quick that I hardly notice it because it was just the OS restarting not the computer rebooting. The how and why Vista would restart was unknown though I do remember a couple of times I would get a media player error but that was not consistant.

However, now the error is consistant and I can replicate it. On certain files, when I would RIGHT Click on the file to look their property Vista will crash and after scanning itself, restart up. At first I have not paid attention to the files in question but today I noticed that when I went to look at the properties for Gas Powered Games' Dungeon Siege 2, because it crashes every time I try to start it (I just reinstalled the game yesterday and while I ran into an online issue, was able to play the single player version fine but today when I tried to start the game it won't start and crashes).

I did two searches under Vista restarting and Vista restarting when Right Clicking properties and after reading the 75 results, there were a few threads that had very similar issues but they were locked and none of them had an answer.

So, let's try it again, anyone got a clue about this issue?

My system is an ACER, that I keep updated with Microsoft Update and protected by AVG as well as the Microsoft utilities.

A:Explorer Crashes and then restarts when Right Click on Properties

Are you sure its not just Windows Explorer crashing? I don't see how the OS could restart but not the computer. Try typing sfc /scannow into your start menu. This will check you system files and repair them if they are indeed damaged.

Hello

I just cleaned underneath the keys of my inspiron 1525 laptop because my stepchildren enjoyed getting sticky substances underneath the keys and I wanted my wife to have better functionality.  I didn't pull up all the keys and used alcohol, pipe-cleaners and q-tips to clean.  After letting it dry a while, I started it up and everything seemed to work fine.  Then I noticed that when I double-clicked on desktop icons, it displayed the 'properties' menu instead of opening.

I figured the ALT key was stuck so I took it off and examined it.  It appeared fine but no matter what I seem to do, this continues.  I've tried to follow some online instructions to disable hotkeys but it still continues.  I assumed it was the ALT key but perhaps I'm mistaken.

Any advice and/or methodology would be greatly appreciated.

Whoa!  It's worse than I thought!  I went onto a browser and apparently I can't type at all!  What the hell?  The keyboard reacts but not by typing letters, it's as if it's all hotkeys now!

ARRRRGH!

Help . . . please . . . ?

Tried restarting in safe mode and problem persists.  Only thing I can figure is that one or more of the keys are jammed.  Wish I could figure out which one.  Otherwise, I'll have to take off half the damn keyboard.  It doesn't SEEM to be the ALT key since I can still do CRTL-ALT-DEL and bring up the task manager.  Anyone hav... In Window 7 and earlier versions, one could right-click an item in the start menu, select properties and access the shortcut tab. Therein lay the Short key field, which I used a lot for creating custom key combinations, eg CTL+ALT+N for Notepad++ or CTL+ALT+P for Paint.NET.

In Windows 10, the start menu seems to treat all items as Apps and right-click brings up a minimal menu, which doesn't include properties.

Just today I suddenly have a problem where I can't type at all at times. I can put the cursor in place, I can use the scroll bars on the sides to move up and down, but can not type in available spaces. WHen I tried left clicking it would go to "properties" on any icon/shortcut I chose. I couldn't even go to "restart" on the desktop screen the normal way. I had to shut the computer down and load everything over then use the on screen keyboard to type in my admin password.

It loaded, started typing normally then a little while later went back to the same issue. I did it again and same thing. Right now I'm using it and I see its starting to slow down and freeze while I type. (I'm seriously praying it lets me finish this inquiry) I'm using a separate keyboard because of an issue I had from a while back with the "W" key getting stuck and having to always hit "ESC" to get it to stop. I never have problems with the added keyboard and it doesn't seem to be the keyboard itself since I can't use any of the original keys on the laptop either when this happens. (I could always use most of them)

I also noticed a box in the top left would try to pop up with options like "file" when I would try to type during these times.

The only new things I can say happened on here today is an icon in the bottom right asking if I want to upgrade to Windows 10 and Firefox had a promotion for it's Foxyeah program/event.

My computer has been having some problems lately and I really do not know what is going on.

I'm running a 2008 Toshiba laptop and about a month ago I started noticing that my cursor would randomly turn into a rainbow? this was the first problem I couldn't figure out, even going through forums and forums. Then I started noticing that every other website was being redirected to random spyware websites, even in the middle of viewing a website for over 3-4 minutes it could just randomly redirect me.

Finally, the most annoying thing of all has happened and I can't find ANYTHING about it; when I plug in my mouse everything works fine, but then i notice if i left click it'll open the property pane and also create a highlighted box.. basically any time i click anything, it acts as if i'm pressing the right click 5 times for every left click. This makes it very very difficult to click on links, play games, or virtually use my lap top at all. I have noticed something though, I swapped out my mouse for another and still had the same problem, BUT my touchpad doesn't have any of the problems above?? is it the driver for my USB mouse malfunctioning?
If you want the shorter version of that: My mouse changes into a rainbow randomly, i'm constantly redirected to websites for no reason, and my mouse will not stop spamming right click even when I left click but my touchpad doesn't have problems.

In summary, I am facing the following problems:
1) Right-click on "Properties" on Desktop -> there's no context menu popup. Just an hour glass and after around a min or so, it's just back to normal.
2) Disk Defragmenter doesn't work -> When I click to Start Defrag, there's a popup box, stating "Disk Defragmenter could not start".
3) Can't seem to Empty Recycle Bin -> Whenever I double-click on "Recycle Bin", there're no files inside the folder. But when i click "Empty Recycle Bin", system prompted "Are you sure you want to delete all 54 files?". Upon clicking "Yes", another error popup box stated "Cannot remove folder bases: The directory is not empty".
4) Popup box error: \Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Temp\C31F31E6 is either corrupted or unreadable.

I had tried to run AVG Anti-Virus scan, but it had only captured cookies.
I had also used the Malwarebytes' Anti Malware on 2 occasions. 1st time: it had not completed successfully. It had ran for more than 7 hrs (on quick scan) and then just hanged there. 2nd time: Same thing. Quick scan, but also hanged after around 2 hrs or so. When I looked at the f... Read more

The MalwareByte hung again yesterday night!

The filename, at the point of scanning was C:\Documents and Settings\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\L9580913\Desktop.ini.

Any idea how I can resolve these errors?

You have posted this and probably three or four threads before starting a new thread do you think you're going to get any more extra help? I'll have you know one of the guys (Brink) that you don't believe it is very highly respected around here and if he can't get it most likely it's going to be very tough to find someone that does.

Hi,

My laptop is currently running on windows XP Home Edition.

I have been facing numerous problems:

1) Right-click "Properties" on Desktop does not work. It doesn't bring up the window for the wallpaper/screensaver.
2) Disk Defragmenter cannot start.
3) Although I have deleted all the documents in the Recycle Bin, the icon on the desktop still shows that there are documents in the folder. When I re-click into the Recycle Bin folder and click "Empty Recycle Bin", the number of documents still remain the same. I cant seem to clear all these unwanted documents at all.

Any solution out there?

Pls help.

Regards,
Tracy

Are you saying there is no context menu at all when you right-click on the desktop?

Do you get any message when you try to run the defrag app?

What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?

Hi,
I'm encountering an issue with a relatively new Windows 8 Pro x64 install (Been running about a week).
When attempting to right click on the Network Connection and select "Properties", I receive the following error:
"An unexpected error occurred"
The error also occurs when trying to disable the adapter. The network connection DOES work though. I have received an IP from my DHCP router and have network/internet access.
I have tried the Windows XP/7 "fix":
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type regsvr32 %systemroot%\system32\netshell.dll, and then click OK.
3. In the RegSvr32 dialog box, click OK.
Test to see if you can open the properties of the network connection in the Network Connections folder.

1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type regsvr32 %systemroot%\system32\ole32.dll, and then click OK.
3. In the RegSvr32 dialog box, click OK.
4. Restart the computer.
Both did NOT work. I have also attempted uninstalling and reinstalling the Network Driver. I have also tried "SFC /scannow".
Neither of these worked either.

When I double click a drive or folder, the Properties dialog opens instead of the normal Open behavior. If I right click on a drive or folder, the default (hilited) action is "Move or Rename Audio Files". How do I restore normal behavior. I don't see any way to change the default open behavior like I could in XP via the Folder Options, File Types dialog. Windows 7 RC1 Build 7100

A:Double click a drive or folder opens the Properties dialog instead of the normal Open behavior

Hi,

Thank you for posting.

If the issue did not occur previously, please just try System Restore first.

I suspect this issue may be also related to the mouse settings. Please go to ?Control Panel\Hardware and Sound? and click ?Mouse? and check your mouse settings; please ensure that the left button is set to ?Click? and right button is ?Right-click?.

You may also click the Restore Defaults to reset the mouse settings.

If you use some other application to manage the mouse, please also check the settings or just remove it.

Thanks.Nicholas Li - MSFT

Hi, when I right-click the folder with my music to see how many files (MP3) there are, i always get an incorrecnt amount (higher than the real number).
For example, if i manually count it all, i get 1,546 files, but in the Properties it shows 1,784 files. Can anyone explain why is that?

P.S. When I open my Music Organiser, it shows the correct number of music files...

Cheers ;)

Hi Karpaty !

Could be some hidden files : go to tools => folder options => view, check "show hidden files and folders" and uncheck "hide protected operating system files". See if some new files appear now.

Hi. I'm on Windows XP Home.

I would like to prevent an installer from deleting files that it puts in a particular folder. Is this possible? The installer encounters an error at the end of the process and deletes everything. It was suggested to me that if I could find a way to "keep" the files, I would be able to get things working.

Any ideas?

Thanks..

A:Folder Properties question.

If the installer choses to delete all the files after the error then there is no way to keep them. Unless you know how to re-write the installer exe file but i wouldnt suggest that.

So I was going to dive into tagging my images on my HDD so I can find what I what when I want and specifically what I want. But there is a problem. I can't tag PNG images.
In fact PNG images differ in the properties panel:
JPEG Properties:
PNG Propertie:
What is this crap? Is there anyway to enable or force this via RegEdit?

If I go to system properties and click on the general tab it gives me info about the comp[uter system. Everything is correct except that under Computer it says that the CPU is an unknown type. Everything is working great but this bugs me. I would swear that I read somewhere about this and possibly how to correct it.

I have looked every where and no luck on finding any info.

Hope someone knows about it.

Thanks

On discord, its not uncommon for me to come across "Cursed MP4 Files" with strange properties.

I'm incredibly interested how the creators of these files were able to get their results and mostly I want to make my own "cursed files". Some of the properties I've seen are video lengths upwards of 13,000 hours long, yet still being 1 MB. I've also seen videos that have negative video lengths and videos that display the video length as 0, yet still plays a video.

How were some of these made? I can file share the specific MP4 files in question

Hi everyone -

Since the new year, I have observed in a few systems including the one I use most frequently, that a right-click on any program or file brought up in the start menu brings up only one selection - "Properties". And when selected, "Properties" brings up the "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties" screen - just as if I were clicking on the Quick Task bar itself and selecting Properties.

I haven't really gotten into this yet and before I do, I wanted to ask if anyone else has experienced anything like this or knows what may be the underlying cause.

All virus and malware scans are clean; DSS incorporting HiJackThis are free and clear of debris.

Thank you. . .

Hello mate i had the exact same problem!

If you open the registry editor and go to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

There you should find a key called "NoChangeStartMenu".
Make sure the value of this is set to 0 and if not change it.

Also check here:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

You should find the same key "NoChangeStartMenu"
And make sure this is also set to 0.

Restart your computer and your problem should be solved.
