Startup Missing Folders Messages

Q: Startup Missing Folders Messages

Hi All,

for a few months now, during startup after my desktop appears, I get 5 windows, one after the other saying that windows cannot find a certain file and that if I don't need it, to delete it in the registry. The file name is a series of letters, boxes, a y with 2 dots over it, etc. I click o.k. and the next window pops up. The file name is the same in the first 4 windows and slightly different in the last. I have to click ok on all before my computer will function. I've tried to search for it to see what it is but with no luck. It is pretty aggravating. Anyone have any ide how I can look for this thing or get rid of the reference so I can start normanlly? thanks.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have Windows XP and run Avast as my security tool. Yesterday while just browsing the internet my Avast tool started going crazy blocking things left and right and running programs in its 'sandbox'. I thought it was taken care of and then i started receiving pop ups of hard drive errors. I ran the typical hard drive tests with no problems and ran a virus scan but Avast was not finding anything. I rebooted only to find a large number of my files/folders missing (soem were very important documents and pictures)and the hard drive messages popping up quite frequently. The speed of the computer/internet has severly slowed as well.

I downloaded MalwareBytes and it found to files that i deleted. However, everytime i restart the computer and run MalwareBytes, it is still finding stuff.

How do I get rid of this hiddent worm, trojan, whatever it is for good so it wont be creeping back in?

I have noticed that several times when I have gone to a folder in Outlook Express to look for a message that I had previously stored there, there was nothing in the folder. The folder, e.g., "Dell," was there but all of the messages that I put into the folder are gone. I know I didn't delete them and I am wondering if, in compressing files, Outlook Express puts them somewhere for later retrieval? Thanks in advance.

I just installed MS Outlook 2002 that came with my t-mobile MDA pocketpc/smartphone w/ windows mobile 5.0, and when I click the calendar shortcut, I get "Unable to display the folder. Microsoft Outlook could not access the specified folder location." When I click the contacts shortcut, I get the calendar. The tasks shortcut gives me notes. Notes shortcut gives me journal. Both Outlook Today and Deleted Items gives me Outlook Today.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling. I've updated through windows, microsoft, and office updates. I'm running win xp pro w/ sp2 and office xp.

When I right click the calendar shortcut, I get: "! unable to display folder properties. the folder may have been deleted or the server where the folder is stored may be unavailable. can't display folder properties."

When I go to what I think is the the directory of these folders, I don't see any of them.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would very much appreciate some help finding my missing files and folders if possible.

I am running windows Vista version 6.0, service pack 2.

I started windows, and noticed that 5 of my desktop folders were missing, and all of the files contained within. A search for document and folder names returned nothing (even with advanced search options). One of the missing folders was called "term 1". I created a new folder, and tried to change the name to term 1. A pop-up told me that this destination (desktop) already contained a folder named "term 1"- did I want to merge these folders? I was confused, because I could no longer see the original term 1 folder. I clicked "yes" hoping that a merge would result in a visible term 1 folder, but now the new folder also disappeared. After some intensive searching, I could not find any of the folders/files that were missing. Some other folders/files were still visible on my desktop though.

I restored my computer to a previous checkpoint (from 2 days ago, after a windows update). After reboot, I received a message that the restore was unsuccessful. At this point, all of my desktop folders and files were gone, aside from windows default desktop icons. A search returned no results. I remembered that restore can fail because of an AV program, so I disabled Norton. I tried to undo the restore, which was successful, but no files/folders returned. I then tried to do a restore to a checkpoint from befor... Read more

I've got a few Archive PST files from Outlook 2010. Two of the files are ~9.5GB, the 3rd is ~4GB.

Upon opening the files in Outlook (on the same machine that they were originally created on) All I get is the folder structure, no messages. I've also tried importing the files, however I get the same issue.

I've run ScanPST which didn't make any difference, I also purchased "Kernel Outlook PST Repair" which is able to see all the messages however it seems to take hours 'recovering' them only to crash..

Is there a simple fix? or could you recommend a different PST repair tool?

Thanks in advance.

I'm on a new laptop running Windows 8 Pro, and I'm running into permission issues. I just created an icon (using Axialis Icon workshop), and tried to save it to a folder which I myself created. But I got this message:

C:\Program Files\Icons\IN-USE\GS.ico
You don?t have permission to save in this location.
Contact the administrator to obtain permission.

Would you like to save in the My Pictures folder instead?

No, I wouldn't like to save in My Pictures. I never use it. How can I get permission to save to the folder I want? I'm a sole user; I'm a member of administrators; I've tried (unsuccessfully so far) to give myself permission to run all programs without being nagged.

I suspect that taking ownership of the C:\Program Files might do the trick, but it seems like an extreme measure. Should I simply follow the steps in Brink's tutorial 'How to Allow or Deny Access Permisions to Users and Groups in Windows 8'?

A:How do I save to folders without permissions messages?

For security reasons, Windows does not allow normal user accounts to write to Program Files. This prevents many malware type applications from being able to take control over system files and applications. It's just not a good idea to store things in this subfolder, unless you are installing an application.

You should instead, save your icons to your user folder. Creat an Icons folder under C:\Users\(your user name)\Icons

Everything under this folder is writeable by you, and it will get indexed by the search service as well as backed up if you do backups.

If you work with the OS, and store your files in the places that that are designed for you to store them, then you will have a lot fewer problems than if you fight it. You have to remember that the OS is trying to both create a secure environment that does not allow malware to do things, and allow you the freedom to do what you need to do.

I'm having a bit of a problem with OE 6. It seems that when I opened it this morning, all my messages were missing. Inbox, Outbox, Deleted... all the 'default' folders were empty. Compounding my frustration, ALL of my 'user-created' folders are GONE. I poked around a bit looking for *.dbx files, and the only ones that show up are the defaults - and they're all <50k in size or so.

I assume the problem came about as a result of a Windows hard lock-up yesterday (long story, but I've got a wonky SATA cable to one HDD on my RAID 0, the cable was 'reseated', and the drive checked out fine - this has happened before with no 'unrecoverable' consequences), anyhow, I had to hit the reset button to get the rig to budge. Regardless, I find it hard to believe that improperly shutting down Windows would somehow result in the LOSS of folders, corruption sure, but total loss? I dunno.

Did the usual AdAware/SpyBot/Virus checks, and I'm 100% clean on all fronts.

Anyway, all insight/help/support is appreciated.

Now this is probably going to sound very strange, but this is starting to get a little annoying so would like to see if it can be sorted. In Outlook 2007 I have my Inbox and a folder set up called Current Mail, which I place any in progress e-mails into so that I can keep a record of all e-mails I'm working on. This folder is sorted by the category of the e-mail which I am using to display its priority, i.e. which one needs to be looked at first. At the moment when I select this folder it auto selects the message right at the bottom of the Reading Pane, which is slightly annoying as my Priority 1 e-mails are right at the top and my lower priorities are at the bottom. This means that every time I go into the folder, I have to scroll all the way back up to find the e-mail I want to work on, or the e-mail that I was previously viewing. Is there any way to set this auto select to default to the previously viewed e-mail or the top of the list, rather than just hitting the bottom straight away? My Inbox selects the most recent message and doesn't seem to have any differences?

A:Solved: Outlook 2007 Folders and Messages

hey ad_taylor that is weird. i also have out2007 and in my folders i have reading pane on the right and if i first go to the folder it selects the top message. unless it's sorted ascending by date. i don't know. maybe try going to view, current view, customize current view, then try to play with those options, maybe go to group by and try unchecking the automatically group checkbox at the top. or you could try to just reverse the sort order.

I would like to free up space on our hosting company's server by switching one user's account from IMAP to POP3 access. They like to keep their old messages and currently have about 160 MB of them spread across about 75 folders on the server.

Is there an easy way to copy/move all of the folders and their contents from the IMAP server and make them local folders in Outlook Express 6 (running on XP Pro) ? I can't seem to be able to do a simple drag-and-drop. Am I doomed to manually recreating all of the named folders locally on their computer and then saving each block of messages into each folder?

I decided to backup (copy) all my folders with messages in Outlook Express 6. I did a Google search and found numerous sites which gave specific instructions for doing this. All, including Microsoft, were basically the same. I exported to my desktop assuming everything would be in one folder, but rather every folder was displayed separately. I created a New Folder and dragged them all into it. I then opened OE6 and found there were no messages at all there. I then followed the suggested procedure for importing back to OE6 and the messages returned. I then deleted the New Folder I had created on the desktop and re-opened OE6. All messages were gone again. I was able to recover most of them (not all) by restoring from the Recycle Bin. I have attempted several times to recover all the messages and restore OE6 to the exact state it was in before I started this process, but could not. I picked a date prior to beginning this and did a System Restore, but it still left all the icons (folders) with messages on the desktop. Every time I would attempt to import these back to OE6, I would loose more messages. I have tried everything I can find information on but with no success. I simply want to get as many of my messages and folders back to OE6 and removed from the desktop. Can you help?

Hi Andy

...Welcome to the Tech Support Forums!

If you haven't added any hardware or software, or made any other system changes, just before seeing these messages, a quick-fix try would be to use System Restore. I wonder if you may have accidentally changed your DEP (Data Execution Prevention) settings from their defaults. Another possibility is that your system may have a malware infection.

Try the System Restore, and see if it restores functionality. If so, also run some thorough malware scans. If you find that you still have significant infections present, try the 5-Step Security Checklist from over in our Security forums --- http://www.techsupportforum.com/secu...kthis-log.html

[...and should you wish to read up on how DEP works, here's the Microsoft overview article for that --- http://support.microsoft.com/kb/875352 ]

To try System Restore:
1) Boot your computer into Safe Mode (start tapping the F8 key as the computer is starting up, and select "Safe Mode" from the Boot Menu).
2) Logon as "Administrator".
3) Click on Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore, and select a restore point from before this trouble started.

Best of luck

It seems to run smoother, however, when it starts up, the first thing that happens

1. A folder automatically opens up that is found in the C:\Program Files\Common. It is called a helper.sig and is 48k

2. Then a window pops up that says:

After closing I get 2 more:
That indicate the same.

I close them out, and computer seems to run ok.

Any ideas on how I can remedy these, or what they are?

I am totally baffeled with my problem.

I know files and folders are on my computer. When I go to the path they should be they do NOT show up.

For instance
I go to my computer
click c:\
I am looking for the directory "Documents & Settings"
It is not there.

I try using the cmd and use dos commands to check for the directory and it IS there. I tried the "unhide" files and folders thing and it didn't work. I also tried while in dos mode the attrib -h *.* and that didn't work.

this is causing a great problem because the file path that i am looking for
contains the conversions files and folders of converted and burned movies and as a result is taking up a lot of space that I can't get at to delete.

the path I am trying to get to reads:
c:\documents and settings\J\My Documents

It's there when I seek it out in the DOS mode, but "NOT" there when I use any explorer mode under my operating system, Windows XP sp3

I looked around in the forum here and can't seem to find a solution that fits this.

PLEASE if anyone got a solution it would be appreciated.

I have a puzzler for the Outlook wizards. I'm wondering if somebody can help me recover my colleague's lost folders and messages. The short version is that I changed the Root Folder Path setting in Outlook 2013 for his IMAP account, resulting in the loss of several nested folders and contained messages that were apparently not synced by IMAP. Reverting the setting did not recover the folders/messages!
------- Long version ------------
Please bear with me on the explanation and please please do provide any relevant input that might help with this issue.
My colleague is using Outlook 2013 and had 2 IMAP accounts configured: 1 Gmail account and 1 other account (let's call it "Work"). At first, his issue was that several of his "Work" account folders nested under the Inbox were not syncing to his iPhone email client. I attempted to help by configuring IMAP folders in both applications.
The provider of the Work email specifies that the path for IMAP folders should be configured as "INBOX." Therefore I set this path on his iPhone and changed the Root Folder Path in Outlook 2013 for the Work account to the same, "INBOX".
Upon the change in Outlook 2013, his nested folders immediately disappeared, including all of the contained messages. svchost.exe is a legitimate system file and should be left alone. scvhost.exe is a virus or malware program.
Try running an anti virus program and a spy program such as Ad-aware.

I recently had a virus that masqueraded as a legitimate anti-virus program (I think it was System Security). After a long process of going into safe mode and uninstalling it, I ran Malwarebytes and cleaned up the rest of the infections on my computer. However, after the login screen comes up, an error saying this pops up:

Windows cannot copy file C:\Documents and Settings\patron.orig\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\0EJGS7S6\.biz_M-cm.nfl_M-cm.EX_hisp-cm.music_M;;tile=1;ord1=4092;sz=728x90;contx=none;btg=cm.biz1;btg=cm.biz_M;btg=cm.nfl_M;btg=cm.EX_hisp;btg=cm[1].music_M;ord=[timestamp] to location C:\Documents and Settings\patron\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\0EJGS7S6\.biz_M-cm.nfl_M-cm.EX_hisp-cm.music_M;;tile=1;ord1=4092;sz=728x90;contx=none;btg=cm.biz1;btg=cm.biz_M;btg=cm.nfl_M;btg=cm.EX_hisp;btg=cm[1].music_M;ord=[timestamp].

DETAIL - The filename or extension is too long.

Possible causes of this error include network problems or insufficient security rights. If this problem persists, contact your network administrator.

Then the next screen says something to the effect that the computer couldn't log on to the user that was specified but was able to log onto the default profile instead. This is a problem because the computer that is infected is at the library I work at and we don't want people to mess with settings that they can now access us... Read more

Hi,I see you are running Teatimer.I suggest you to disable it because it can interfere with the changes you'll make on your system. When everything is done and your log is clean again, you can enable it again. If teatimer gives you a warning afterwards that some changes were made, allow this instead of blocking it.How to disable TeaTimer <== click me for instructions. After you disabled Teatimer, download ResetTeaTimer.bat to your desktop. For the past week or so, I have been getting an error message at startup along the lines of "Windows cannot find the file or folder "copy" etc... I can't get the exact text because it doesnt happen all the time, and nothing seems to actually go wrong other than the message. I've checked all my windows updates and whatnot, and I don't mess around with my system files much, certainly not since this has started. Any ideas?

i am working on an hp omnibook xe3 gf running windows 2000. connected to it is a hp350cb1 printer using the infrared port. tihs configuration works perfectly with no exclamation marks in device manager or errors in event viewer.
the problem starts when i install a nokia 6210 connected via cable (not infrared) i get an error in device manager - ir bridge kernal-level interface has an exclamation mark on it after a reboot (i have to reboot after the nokia installation) i also get an error message appear on screen after login - usrbridg.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows.
windows 2000 has service pack 2 installed.
even though i'm getting this error, the printer still prints via the infrared port!
i've ran the win2k restore disk supplied with the notebook and also built w2k off an original microsoft w2k pro release (installing the drivers for all devices manually)which both worked with no errors until installing the nokia!
i've even tried installing the nokia via the infrared port and not the cable, and got exactly the same error messages.
i've tried removing the devices and reinstalling to the same errors. i've also tried a different phone(same model) still the same error message!

My daughter came home from college and brought her laptop. She said it hadn't been running right. So I ran adaware, defragged the hard drive, etc.

It seems to run smoother, however, when it starts up, the first thing that happens

1. A folder automatically opens up that is found in the C:\Program Files\Common. It is called a helper.sig and is 48k

2. Then a window pops up that says:

Error Loading
The specified module could not be found

After closing I get 2 more:
That indicate the same.

I close them out, and computer seems to run ok.

Any ideas on how I can remedy these, or what they are?

There seems to be a fix posted at the Malwarebytes' forum here:
READ the whole thread, and then probably best to use the clean install method, or try the fix.

Not sure if that will take care of the other error or not but it may.
