I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Yoga 2-11 Yesterday the CTRL-C, CTRL-X, and ALT-CTRL-DEL functions stopped working; strangely CTRL-V works fine. It's very difficult to get the @  and ? symbols to appear, but capital letters using the same Shift key are fine. Also, when I would type, several of the same letter would appear, and when pressing the space bar several spaces would appear. I fixed this issue by adjusting my keyboard settings by setting the repeat rating to the slowest setting. I've used device manager to uninstall the keyboard, also updated drivers, etc, but nothing seems to fix things. Using Windows Key R and OSK to display the onscreen keyboard, and using my physical keyboard for input confirms that the Shift and CTRL keys work. One thing that I noticed: when I touch the CTRL key a round onscreen circle appears and gets smaller and disappears; this is also true for CTRL-X and CTRL-C, but when using CTRL-V the circle does not appear.

I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop with Windows 8 and Internet Explorer 10 installed.

In Google search box, when I type Ctrl+Z( for undo), it does NOT work. Neither does Ctrl+Y( for redo). When I type Ctrl+backspace for deleting the preceding word, it works perfectly, but when I type Ctrl+Delete to delete the following word, it does NOT work at all. Kindly help me out of this problem.

In Notepad, Ctrl+Z( undo) works but Ctrl+Y(redo) does not. Neither does Ctrl+backspace(to delete the preceding word) but Ctrl+Delete(to delete the following word) works perfectly.

I don't know why some shortcut keys work and some don't. Please tell me how to make all these shortcut keys work in Google search box as well as in Notepad.

Within the past few weeks, both my left and right CTRL keys have stopped working on a Lenovo Y40-70.  I've tried various steps, some drastic, without success.  I'm still not sure if I'm looking at a hardware or software problem. Things I've tried that make me think the hardware has failed are:Booting to safe mode (CTRL still does not work).Formatting C:, reinstalling Win 10 (CTRL still does not work).Using a USB keyboard (CTRL works on USB keyboard).Using OSK (CTRL does not register on OSK). Things I've tried that make me thing that there's a software or firmware issue:Remapping CTRL with KeyTweak (CTRL will not be remapped).If I hit CTRL-V with only one CTRL key (either right or left), I get "V."  But if I hold both CTRL keys and hit V, I get "5V."  Both CTRL and "M" results in "6M."  Both CTRL and "X" results in "F1" (as in the F1 key, not the string "F and 1").  Both CTRL and "Z" results in "apostrophe Z."  This implies that CTRL is sending some signal, if only when they are both pressed. Any thoughts? Thanks EDIT: I've also popped off both CTRL keys and cleaned them.

Thread title pretty much sums it up: CTRL-A disabled, CTRL Key Works, A Key Works, Other CTRL-combos work. I use CTRL-V, CTRL-C, CTRL-Z, etc all the time.

CTRL-A has never worked for me, in any application. Instead of selecting all, CTRL-A pastes, the same as CTRL-V, only when you use CTRL-A, in addition to pasting, it also makes a system sound, kind of like a knock sound. Out of desperation to identify the sound I looked control panel sounds and listened to all of them, it's not there.

I've never really needed CTRL-A until now because I'm wanting to use a specific application that has no other way to select all except CTRL-A, so I'm now desperate...

Any help will be much appreciated.

Hi... I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 on my Dell Inspiron 1720 with a tricked out Firefox 3 with a bunch of extensions, and all of a sudden today I started notice that Ctrl + S and Ctrl + F, 2 keyboard shortcuts that I use ALL THE TIME, are no longer working in ANY APPLICATION. The F and Control keys are working fine separately and other common shortcuts such as Ctrl + C, V, A, O, and P are working just fine.

I've tried it in Firefox, Internet Explorer, Notepad, Paint and Dreamweaver and Ctrl + S and Ctrl + F don't work in either one of those applications. The weird thing is without doing much of anything, it was working at some point today after I had noticed it WASN'T working, but now I rebooted for another reason and those 2 shortcuts are not working again.

By the way, I went into Vista's Ease of Access center (previously called Accessibility I believe), and everything is turned off.

And I also tried the control key to the right of my keyboard. None of it works.

Very annoying... Anyone got any ideas or know of any app that will help me find out what the problem is?

Thank you very much in advance, any help's appreciated

Because of this problem is general in all of my editors I think this is not a software specific issue and belongs to my Win 7.

Hello everyone. Today my shift and ctrl keys stopped working correctly... it happened while I was playing and later when I tried to change the language using Alt + Shift. I checked if Sticky Keys and other similar options weren't turned on by accident, but they weren't.

And after some time spent in trying to fix the problem I opened the On-Screen Keyboard and noticed that when I use my Ctrl key, Shift is pressed automatically as well (it's just what On-Screen Keyboard says). The same thing happens when I press Shift, then the Ctrl key "presses itself". It so happens that all four (left and right shift, and left and right ctrl) keys are pressed at the same time, when I press just one of them.

Does everyone know where the problem could be from and how I can fix it... it's really annoying, I can't use any of the combinations like Ctrl + V, Ctrl + C, Ctrl + A, etc. The problem started while I was playing Assassin's Creed; I sometimes hear sounds like too-much-buttons-pressed while I play it, but I've never had this problem until today. I have no idea what it could be, I tried everything I know.

If it helps, the problem is still there while I chat or surf the web through Asus Express Gate, when the windows isn't running at all.

PS: Sorry if I used strange phrases or words, I am not a native English speaker.

Hello. I encountered a weird problem.

I recently bough Acer Aspire 5734Z with Windows 7 Home Edition installed. When I type CTRL + C or CTRL + V my touchpad stops working for a few seconds. Then it get back to normal. And Except this the functions of ctrl + c and ctrl + v works.

This happens all the time, no matter how much I copy, I can copy nothing doing just the combination and my touch pad freezes.

When playing games as GTA Vice City I have problems using WASD movement at the same time as I adjust the screen(camera) with touch pad. Suddenly lot of combinations stop working, and I have to either stop walking around (WASD combinations) and use touchpad to adjust screen, then stop using touchpad and go back to using WASD.

I hope you understand. I am not very good at explaining things. And I really hope to find a solution to this.

When I did first-run of the laptop, the touchpad didnt have scrolling function working. So I went to acer.com, found my computer model, selected Windows 7 Home Edition and installed the newest touchpad driver 64bit. And it worked. Scrolling working. But freezing problems still occurs. And I think it might be some windows 7 anti multitasking function or something.

Hi all!
I need help to use macros properly. It is my first attempt at doing this, and I don't understand what I am doing wrong.

I have found this thread which resembles my problem, but I still do not understand what to do

Basically, I have 2 Excel spreadsheets open.
One is List A, the other is List B (Master List).

I have worker codes in List A, and have to find them in the B list to assign them a code (1) in column M.

What I did was go in my first spreadsheet, and selected the first worker code. Then, I started recording my Macro from there.
Ctrl+C worker code
Ctrl+Tab to second spreadsheet
Ctrl+F to open find box
Ctrl+V to paste the worker code copied from before
Close the search box
Cursor now over Worker code, Move over to column M by pressing the RIGHT arrow 12 times (from A to M)
Type "1" and then Enter
Ctrl+Tab to come back to first spreadsheet
Down Arrow to move on to next worker code

However, the Macro looks like this :
Cells.Find(What:="A4WL7CPA3BRX5", After:=ActiveCell, LookIn:=xlFormulas, _
LookAt:=xlPart, SearchOrder:=xlByRows, SearchDirection:=xlNext, _
MatchCase:=False, SearchFormat:=False).Activate
Application.CutCopyMode = False
ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "1"

A:Solved: Macro in Excel help! Using CTRL+V inside a CTRL+F

Macro recorder only record specific actions, not generic actions.
So you can't use it to repeat the steps for other cells.
You have to code it specifically in VBA.

As for your case you can have a lookup formula in column M of the Master list to do the check.

eg in cell M12 of List B, type
[List A.xlsm]Sheet1'!A:A,A12)

this goes to your List A first column to count the number of instances the value in cell A12 occurs.
Assuming there is no duplicate, the result is either 1 if found or 0 if not found.

If there are more than one instances in List A, the formula can be adapted to
[List A.xlsm]Sheet1'!A:A,A12)>0)*1

*1 will ensure that the result which is True or False becomes 1 or 0.

Hello All! I have a question regarding configuring hot keys in Windows 7 OS. There is interesting feature in Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Language\Advanced settings - Advanced Key settings where you can assign combination like CTRL+0

In Windows 7 Enterprise you can assign this hot keys and everything work well. But when laptop run to sleep mode, when you wake a system - all your hotkeys settings are canceled. The issue is described here:https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1261058-windows-81-is-forgetting-ctrl12345-shortcuts-designated-for-keyboard-layout-switching-after-wa/
Is it possible to resolve this problem without editing registry? It would be great if Team of MS developers\testers was informed about the problem and the issue was fixed with some updates.

Similar problem was with Windows 10(my post)

It's a question that many have asked before, but I can't find any proper solution to. I have an Erazer X315, and the keyboard that was shipped with the computer has the Fn key on the lower left, with the Ctrl key to the right of it. I need a way to swap the Fn and Ctrl keys! This is absolutely destroying my user experience with this product. I do not have a choice as this laptop was provided by my employer, but I will do everything that I can to either fix this issue or to get my employer to buy laptops elsewhere. I have a Lenovo ThinkPad T420 and I find the fact that the Fn key is to the right of the Ctrl key very irritating. I have been using computers for 20 years and the Ctrl key has always been the right most key on the keyboard. Not only is it hard to overcome the muscle memory which I have developed, but it also puts considerable strain on my fingers. This oversight in keyboard design also makes it very hard to switch back and forth between computers. This seemingly small problem is magnified by the fact that I spend an average of 10 hours a day in front of computers. Please post a BIOS fix to remap these two keys. Key-remapping utilities that I have explored do not have the ability to remap the Fn key because it is controlled by the hardware.

Hi Balvenie15
From what I know, previous batch of ThinkPad (starting with T400, T500, X200, W500, W700) already have an option to swap Fn and Ctrl keys. This links also provides another link to explain why it is designed this way.

My name is Billy O'Neal and I will be helping you. (Billy or Bill is fine, if you like.)
Please give me some time to look over your computer's log(s).
Please take note of the following:In the meantime, please refrain from making any changes to your computer.
Also, even if things appear to be running better, there is no guarantee that everything is finished. Please continue to check this forum post in order to ensure we get your system completely clean. We do not want to clean you part-way up, only to have the system re-infect itself. :)

Finally, please reply using the button in the lower left hand corner of your screen.

I've got a new Precision 5520 running Ubuntu 16.04. After at least ten years using a MacBook Pro, my left hand demands that the Ctrl and Fn keys be swapped. I understand the Fn key is handled at the lowest level. Poking around in the BIOS, I could find no way to swap them at that level. Is there a way to accomplish this seemingly simple feat, perhaps using xmodmap (which I've not investigated yet, as it seems to be too high level)?

I've swapped my Fn & Ctrl keys in the BIOS, however to make things look correct, I'd like to find a source for new physical keys so I can swap those on the keyboard itself. Problem is that the Fn key is squarish, while the Ctrl key is rectangular, so they do not interchange. The right hand Ctrl key is squarish and will swap with the Fn key, but I'd still need a rectangular Fn key. Anyone know of a source for a rectangular looking Fn key to fit these keyboards? TIA

The XPS 15-9530 keyboard requires that you hold the Function key to do home/end (Function+Left is Home and Function+Right is End).  That works fine, but I have found that if Ctrl+Home and Ctrl+End are a bit finicky.  Specifically, the key order I have to press to do a Ctrl+Home is Ctrl then Function then Left.  If I do Function then Ctrl then Left, it only sends a Home and not a Ctrl+Home.  Is there any way to work around this?  It's a bit annoying to have my Ctrl+Home and Ctrl+End fail so often while I'm retraining myself.

My remote desktop session does not appear to be sending the ctrl+alt+left (CAL) or ctrl+alt+right (CAR) combinations to the target machine.

Yesterday everything worked fine. I installed Windows Vista Ultimate 64 and could successfully RD to my laptop machine, which is running XP Pro SP2. CAL and CAR worked.

Today I installed SP1 on the Vista machine. Now my RD won't sent CAL or CAR.

I downloaded a simple keyboard tester application and installed it on both machines. Locally on the Vista machine, CAL and CAR are detected. Same thing locally on the XP machine. When I RD from Vista to XP and try the keyboard test the program shoes that it is receiving the CTRL+ALT combination but doesn't register when I hit the left or right arrow key at the same time. Interestingly, the up and down arrows *do* register.

I tried the RD connection from XP to Vista. Everything works normally. I tried an RD connection from another XP SP2 machine to my laptop. It works.

Any ideas? Is there some sort of key binding in Vista that takes the CAL and CAR combinations before RD can get them? Is RD in Vista 64 filtering them out for some reason?

I've searched the boards and found out how to do this, and one says to go into the BIOS (tried that, but there's no keyboard/input selection in the BIOS) and the only other option is to go into the Lenovo Vantage app in the laptop, but that doesn't have the "Swap Control/Fn Key" ability, either...only toggling the Function Keys at the top of the keyboard.   Anyone successfuly swapped the Ctrl and Fn Key????

A:Swapping Ctrl-Fn Keys on keyboard

So, you just want the Ctrl button to become the Fn button and vice versa. You aren't trying to change what happens with the top row F-keys. Is that correct?
You might look into the Yoga 910 threads where users were swapping the oddly-placed right-shift key with the right-arrow key. I'd imagine the procedure would be similar for this.. but note that those solutions all require 3rd-party keyboard remapping software such as Sharpkeys.

Hi,I have a 2 year old 'HP Pavilion 15-p075sa Notebook PC (ENERGY STAR)' which has suddenly started to behave as if both CTRL keys are being held down. This makes it impossible to type as the computer treats everything as a shortcut.I have searched the entire internet to find solutions for this problem:I've uninstalled and reinstalled various drivers, turned off and on sticky keys, hot keys, touch pad gestures, accessible features, held down certain buttons, played with device settings, cleaned the keyboard and completely reset my laptop... yet still no avail. The on-screen keyboard shows both CTRL keys to be pressed, and they can be momentarily unstuck by holding both CTRL keys down at the same time. I have managed to make my computer type letters by using the program "Sharp Keys" to turn off both of my CTRL keys, however the volume/brightness buttons which double up as function keys are still acting as though CTRL is pressed down, and of course this is only a short term fix. I can't see why this would be a hardware issue as nothing was spilt on the keyboard, the laptop wasn't dropped and isn't very old, however I am considering trying to replace the keyboard which I'm not sure will even be possible due to the design of the laptop (I will post that question in the relevant forum section). Please could you suggest any other solutions? Thanks

Hi gottostayawake, welcome to TSF...

have you checked the keyboard for a sticky alt key? Perhaps try it in another machine or try a different keyboard in your machine to see if the same happens again??
