GhostSurf Image Caching Confusion

Q: GhostSurf Image Caching Confusion

I just started using GhostSurf 2005 Platinum. The app keeps a log
(searched everywhere, cannot find it) of all the ads and cookies it
blocked, as well as the number of secure requests and images cached.

Tenebril says that cached images are taken directly from your IE6
browser. They make it very clear that they never cache anything
on their own proxy servers. Something about all this is bothering me
a lot, and if I don't resolve it in own mind I'm going to uninstall this
app.

If I disconnect from the web and run a browser tracks eraser app all of
the cookies, history, cached websites, etc., are wiped out. When I
restart GhostSurf it's own (hidden) log remains the same. In other words,
if it showed the number of cached images as 500 before they were
deleted, the number GhostSurf displays is still 500, even though they
are no longer cached by IE6. What does all this mean?

Is GhostSurf keeping it's own private stash of all the junk I just deleted,
or is it just keeping a running total, even though my browser tracks
have been erased.

The bottom line is, I must find the log that keeps all this info. If I don't
I'll never know what kind of data GhostSurf is storing on my own PC!
I looked at every file in the GhostSurf directory, as well as the Windows
Application Data folder. I can't find anything that looks like it might be
a log. My operating system is setup to display all hidden files and folders.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I want to create multiple image backups with recovery partition included by organizing them and putting them in separate subfolders without renaming the "WindowsImageBackup" folder. From my understanding, the "create a system image" option doesn't allow multiple image backups. Could I use the "set up backup" option instead to create an system image only without selecting individual files to backup? Is this the same as the "create a system image" option? Will I be able see the most recent and select other image files when using the system repair disc on an empty hard drive? Thanks

he friends...pls make me clear as much as u can
1. when i create system image disc then is it necessary to backup in external drive?cant i back up in d or e drive while creating the system image of system and c drive? there are two check marks in system and c drive so i will not put check marks in d and e drive and want to back up in my d or e drive.
2. will this system image can re install my window or i have to create system repair disc too along with system image? i mean to ask u .. they are complement of each-other while re installing the window or they have their separate use.
3. if i want to make system repair disc of c drive only then while re installing the window my d and e drive data will be formatted or not,?
plz help me to distinguish the main difference between system image disc and system repair disc and the case i use them and the drive they erase while re installing,

A:help me in the confusion to creat system image

A system image is a complete backup of your computer and should always be stored on an external drive. If you you use a partition on your internal drive for backup purposes and the drive fails, you lose everything including your Windows installation and you system image backup. If your drive has more than one partition, just select the partitions you want to include in the backup.

Backup Complete Computer - Create an Image Backup

A system repair disc is entirely different to a system image backup. A system repair disc is a bootable disc that allows you access the Windows 7 recovery environment. You cannot install Windows with it, but you can use it to repair your computer's operating system.

System Repair Disc - Create

You will also need the system repair disc so that you can boot into the recovery environment to restore your computer using a system image backup created earlier.

Hi

I have been doing web design for 10 years, but I have only just discovered that images can have an actual DPI burnt into them. Is this true?

Until now I had simply worked in pixels and assumed that DPI (dots per inch) x inches was simply a rather clumsy way of calculating actual pixels. But today I have had serious trouble importing a particular image into msOutlook and it turns out that there is a DPI setting AS WELL as an actual number of pixels. And that on the image in question I had somehow managed to set it to a high value (300DPI) and every time I imported it into Outlook by any means you like, bl***y Outlook remove about half the pixels.

When I "Save For Web" from Photoshop there is no DPI settting offered, so I am assuming the web browsers ignore any DPI setting and simply take the image size from the height and width settings in the HTML. And if that is missing the browser will presumably just set (assuming the screen is running at native size, and assuming the browser is at 100% zoom) it at 1 pixel of source image to 1 pixel on screen.

However for those of us running windows on high resolution screens when need to increase the DPI setting away from 100% (technically I understand that this is called "96 DPI" although how many actual inches presumably depends on the physical size of your monitor!).

e.g. On my computer the screen is 1920x1200 on a 24inch screen and the text in windows keeps being rather too small to read. So I have cha... Read more

A:Image DPI confusion - what is best advice for high res screen users?

Those "DPI" settings for images are only for printers. Has nothing to do with an image when it is displayed upon a pixel based monitor. When images are only going to be used upon a computer monitor, design in pixels, nothing more.

When you change the text size (mistakenly labeled with DPI) with in Windows, it does not change the pixel resolution. It just makes certain elements bigger, and certain applications zoom into their content. Setting text size to 120% within Windows has IE zooming in by default to 120%.

I bought GhostSurf Pro because it allows you to surf anonymously and most importantly it is supposed to delete the Spyware. Hi all,

When you load a webpage, the files (images, ...) that the webpage contains will be downloaded. If the server hosting the webpage goes down while the files are being downloaded, then IE's Temporary Internet Files will contain partially downloaded files. When the server is back up and running, and you refresh the page, the partially downloaded files will not finish downloading, and will never be downloaded again. The webpage will never display the files that were partially downloaded, and the only way to fix this is to delete the Temporary Internet Files.

Other browsers do not have this problem. It looks like IE does not compare the file size in the Cache, to the file size on the server, but only compares the date, which is the same.

How to reproduce the problem (for developers):
-create a webpage that contains a big file (jpg, swf, or any file).
-on a client computer, clear the Temporary Internet Files, then start loading the page.
-before the file has time to finish downloading, stop and start the web server.
-look inside the Temporary Internet Files, and you will see a partially downloaded file.
-refresh the page, and the partially downloaded files will not finish downloading.

Note: I tried many different file headers, but it looks like whatever header you set for the file, even "no caching ..." headers, the problem always happens.

I just have a question about this. I got a vista home premium 32-bit gateway laptop. And I see the option to delete DNS Cache in CCleaner. All I'm curious about is, what is that really going to do? Anything major besides make my pages load .2 seconds slower?

A:DNS Caching

In general, it's not going to do anything other than force the system to go out and repopulate the cache as you surf the web.

Also, if the DNS Cache is "poisoned" it can prevent you from reaching a website that you want to go to.

Hi

I have a company network with 2 internal dns servers on 192.168.0.7 and 192.168.0.9.
Using DHCP.

2 problem Win7 clients.

When I run ipconfig /all on both it shows both DNS servers as expected

We have a corporate server on AWS and it's IP address changed on Monday during a restart.
Shouldn't have but it did, so we are stuck with a new public facing DNS name for that server, so we updated the friendly CNAME record to point to the new address.

18 of our 20 internal clients, including Win7, 8 and 10 clients and Mac and Linux clients are all finding the corporate server now using the original friendly name.

But 2 Win7 clients are still not getting there.

On both, if we run
nslookup <friendly.domname.com>

It returns the name of of our primary internal DNS server (as nameserver) and the NEW IP address of the host address

So it seems that the client's base OS DNS lookup returns the correct IP.

If I paste that IP into either chrome or Internet Explorer, I get the correct website.

However, if I enter <friendly.domname.com> into either browser (and Firefox) a different website appears.

I can in Chrome test the dns resolver using chrome://net-internals/#dns which returns a list of addresses in chromes internal cache.
And I can flush that browser dns cache by clicking the "clear host cache" button

If I then try the same <friendly.domname.com> again, the cache list is re-populated with a bunch of urls acce... Read more

Hi,

We use a WPAD file hosted on a Websense appliance and use IE11 on Windows 7 x64.

We are seeing some performance issues with the Websense delivery of WPAD and have discovered that every computer is making a large amount of calls to the websense appliance to retrieve WPAD.dat. (Up to 1000 per machine in some cases)

We have worked with Websense and found that they were returning a 'no-cache' option in the WPAD response header. Via a patch we have had this removed.
However I still can't find a cached WPAD file on my machine that I am using for testing and have checked all the registry entries I can think of related to caching.

You could try to update the mainboard bios if there's a new version available. It won't definitely fix it to be able, but there is a decent chance. Also, the controller drivers should be updated to latest, if they are not already.

Hello!

I am about to buy my SSD, but I don't know whether I can use the Crucial M4 64GB for caching, next to using it for my complete OS and a game (maybe two, 7 GB average). Because what I would like to do, is put my OS on it (Win7 64-bit) and the game. And then use (a part of) the space left (around 30GB, reserving 27GB for the OS and 3~4GB for the game) for Caching.

Will this work? Or can I only use the Intel SSD Caching on a empty SSD?

P.S. Someone told me I could only use ~20GB or 60GB for SRT Caching, I find this hard to believe, is it true?
P.P.S. Is it true I ought to put the SRT Caching to 64GB? Or would there actually be a difference if I would put my OS and Call of Duty 4 directly on my SSD?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Hey,
I have been looking around for information about using a onboard msata ssd as a boot drive for fast start up etc.
I have found information about loading windows directly to this drive (setting this drive as c and lists of ways to move the my music files etc to another partition so that when windows starts it only reads program information. However it sounds as if all or most programs would be saved to the drive not windows only.
Other information has described setting this up as a cache via srt with the cache automatically recognizing whats used most often and storing it there saving the issue of less frequently programs slowing it down.

Does anyone use this system? Do you know of a good msata ssd?
Is it possible to set up a drive as a boot drive and only store windows there?
Can you use onboard msata as a boot drive for windows and another small ssd for srt caching?

Sorry about all the questions a total noob to msata and ssd caching. My mobo will have srt / onboard msata capability and Id like to use it.
If a thread already exists about this please let me know what to search by as I haven't found anything on mSata here.

You can read this tutorial from Vistax64 on it. Basically, it's not recommended for laptops without a UPS. I believe if the power were to go out, only the temp. cache would be lost, so like your word document you were working on might be lost if it were to go out.

hi,

i'm a newbie web designer, and i've got what seems to be a pb w/caching. the pb only occurs in IE -- not mozilla or netscape.

what happens is, the page loads and i go to mouse over an image where i've got image swapping set up for a mouseover. instead of just swapping the image, IE does another GET. once the mouse leaves the image, IE does yet another GET to redisplay the image it already had. i can keep doing this ad infinitum, it does a GET for every single image swap, even once it's gotten the image already.

here's weird thing #1: i'm preloading the images. looking at the web server trace file, IE definitely does preload the images, so it shouldn't need to keep GETting them.

weird thing #2: going to another page by clicking a link, then using "back" to get back to the bad page alleviates the pb; the bad page displays perfectly.

now here's weird thing #3: the pb goes away when i completely clear out the cache! if i manually delete all the files in Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5 and then go into internet options and do it again so that IE knows everything's gone, then reload the page -- everything works fine, just like it does w/mozilla! no delays on image swapping! IE preloads the images and swaps them w/o doing any more GETs. i was thinking that if it were a pb w/the image not being cached, a sure way to reproduce the pb would be to clear out the cache. in fact, that solves the pb.

This is about the worst case I've ever seen of a crippled pc. When I first looked at this pc, there was only 177MB of free disk space out of 110GB. I installed the drive onto another pc so I could run a virus scan and I also ran malwarebytes. There were thousands of temporary files that I deleted and the trojan vundo virus was found and supposedly removed. There is now about 70GB of free space. I reinstalled the drive back into the original pc and it woks ok in safe mode. In normal mode, the disk still constantly caches. The wallpaper appears but the desktop icons do not appear. Below is the HJT log. Thanks for your help.

Hi all,

Quick question. I have a spare Agility 2 64GB SSD doing nothing so I'm wondering if I can use it as a pagefile drive for my OS drive which is also an SSD drive.

*NOTE*

All the threads I've read about this have all been about using the OS drive whether it be an SSD drive or HD for pagefiling. I want to use a SPARE SSD drive to pagefile FOR my OS drive.

Is this even possible and if so, how do I do it?

A:Using a spare SSD for Pagefile and caching

Yes, it is possible.

The general advice is not to do it, since it can shorten the life of the SSD because the pagefile is written to often and SSDs have their limitations in regards to that.

But things have gotten better: Taking a Hard Look At SSD Write Endurance - Slashdot

It's for you to decide. I say better to make sure you have enough system RAM (8 GB is starting to get into the "a lot" zone for 64 bit OS - on a 32 bit OS, 4 is "a lot".)

I see you have 24 GB of RAM installed. The pagefile still does certain things, but will be used much less than a system with say 4 GB RAM.

If you do it, make sure TRIM command is active in Windows.

All you would need to do is tell Windows to set the page file to the drive, while deleting the current page file. Nothing difficult.

Hi there everyone -

My situation's this: got a computer loading roaming profile, server is running Win2K.

As I log off on the computer, this is the error message:

EVENT TYPE: Warning
EVENT SOURCE: Userenv
EVENT CATEGORY: None
EVENT ID: 1525
DATE: 7/6/2005
TIME: 10:43:40AM
USER: CHDICKERSIN\aashraf
COMPUTER: JHUDCGFRK71
DESCRIPTION:
Windows has detected that offline caching is enabled on the Roaming Profile share - to avoid potential profile corruption, Offline Caching must be disabled on shares where roaming user profiles are stored.

For more information, see Hlep and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

So I went to the MS Support site and found this link:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;287566

BUT it doesn't solve my problem, because I don't have a share on a separate server, as the solution instructed.

Where is your roaming profile coming from if not the server?

If your saying its on the server but is not shared then I would suggest to make it shared as it should be (not sure how its working if its not) and then go in to the caching and disable it.

Scenario: I am trying to hook my laptop up through a VPN so that I can work from out of my office. I start my computer and the login screen pops up. In the past, i was able to just use my domain password to get into windows, then connect via VPN so i could get my outlook email and browse my company's network. Now, just today, when i start my computer and try to log into windows, it says my password is invalid and i should contact my system admin. Is this a problem with the way win xp caches the profile? Maybe there is a time limit that xp will keep a profile cached?
I have to dial-up using the VPN, so, the password isnt looking at the domain because my laptop isn't connected to anything until i pull up the vpn.

Please help.

PS= I am the network admin!!!!!!!

A:VPN connection/caching profile??

Usually I only see this on newly built PC's or PC's that you have not logged onto for the first time.

From time to time I have seen this occur even on windows NT machines but have never seen "why".

Do you run your VPN as a service? If so have you thoughts about trying to log onto your PC as Adnmin to the PC VPNing in and then logging on as your Domain user ID and password.

Some months ago, I sent an email message to someone from Outlook, and the text of the message was simply "It works!"

I have several blogs I administer. They are wordpress sites. Sometimes when I try and access them, I get a blank screen with only the words "It works!"

I have tried a cache cleaner called CCcleaner, and done all of the other memory dumps that are available thru Windows.

This problem occurs across all browsers, I have seen it in Flock, Firefox, Chrome, Safara, and IE 8, so its definitely a problem within my system.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

On another thread I had stated that there will be a performance hit if you turn off write caching for a SSD. But on second thought, I am not so sure any more.

What write caching allows (in my understanding) is to accumulate records in a buffer so that so that they can be written to the disk in one big swoop. That is an advantage on a spinning disk because all those records are written during the same rotation - and there is also only one seek for the arm.

I wonder though whether that brings the same advantage to the SSD where access time to any place is the same - and it is usually only 0.1ms. There would be an advantage if the records were written in larger blocks from the buffer because the SSD's write performance grows as the block size grows. But if records are still being written e.g. 4K at a time, there may not be an advantage.

Does anybody know whether the blocksize for the write operations increases with caching?

A:For the write caching experts

Hi whs - I see your point about the "write caching" and the SSD. Actually I think SSD's do write smaller blocks of data even faster than large sequential blocks so you could very well be right.

It would be interesting to run a series of tests with the "write caching" turned both on and off- Checking the Windows Disk WEI and checking the results of some of the disk benchmarking utilities (like HD Tune and ATTO).

At the moment I have my "write caching" turned on.

This is the problem I have:

On Windows Vista Business machine.
I have created 4 identical CDs. They all have the same volume label.
I'm not sure about any possible serial number that I have heard people talk about.

I became uncertain about whether they had all been created properly and decided to check them one at a time in the same drive.
After doing a file comparison of the 1st CD against the same set of files on the hard drive, I put the 2nd CD in the drive and did the same file comparison.
Instead of it taking a couple of minutes, it took about 10 seconds, which makes me think that Vista is caching the CD contents somewhere,
and when a CD with the same volume label is inserted it assumes it is the same CD and just uses the cached contents.
If I reboot the machine and try the 2nd CD again, the file comparison takes about 2 minutes again, which you would expect, since rebooting is going to clear the cache.

Although Googling this gave me a couple of people with the same problem I can't find any info on the caching, and in particular, on how to turn it off.
I don't think this has anything to do with the "Write Caching" which I did find in the DVD drive properties.
Does anyone know how to turn this caching off?

Many thanks in advance....
