how to add my own thumbnail images to files & folders?

Q: how to add my own thumbnail images to files & folders?

hi all - id like to know how i may add my own thumbnail images to files / folders ....
example :
i have a few folders with movies - i would like each file or folder to display an image of my choice of a relevant dvd cover or movie poster for easy navigating & aesthetics.
thanks all, as always for any & all help!

Preferred Solution: how to add my own thumbnail images to files & folders?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: how to add my own thumbnail images to files & folders?

Hello Xdash,

One workaround that you could do is to have that folder with only the image or video file that you want to show as the thumbnail, then create a new subfolder in this folder for the rest of the files so that they will not be included with the thumbnail of the main folder.

Another workaround is to create a shortcut of this folder, and change the icon of the folder shortcut.

Hope this helps some,

A:Set thumbnail for Files but not folders?

Hello CosmicPoptart,

Thumbnail previews is a global setting for all or none.

However, as a workaround, you could use the tutorial below to change the default folder icon to have all of them be an open folder to essentially do that.

Hope this helps,

Hi All,

Sorry if this is in the wrong place. However,
I am having exactly the same problem as Thumbnail problem. Computer not generating them or something. - I have done all the things list here and I still cannot see any preview icons for any files or folders. Unless I use the list view which doesnt show previews anyway for picture or movie files.

I have done a repair of Vista and that didnt fix the problem. I really dont want to start from scratch.

I also cannot change my desktop image, and any file I try to upload wont change it.

If you can help me I would very much appreciate it. If you need screenshots or anything like that I can do.

Thank you!

A few days ago I had some issues with my internet connection in games, I therefore searched the internet and posted in some forums for some help, I was advised to carry out a few tests with some software, since doing this it now seems that I have lost my user privileges/access to image files and certain software.

I am unable to open any image files on my PC as I get the following error 'Window Photo Viewer can't open this picture because you don't have the correct permissions to access the file location'.

I am also unable to open Google Chrome, and tried re-downloading it only to be prompted that I do not have permissions.

These are the things I have tried to resolve the problem;

- I have tried doing a system restore, this fails every time no matter which restore point I choose.
- I have tried doing an Anti-Virus scan to ensure there is no malicious software and the result came up all clean after a thorough scan.
- I have checked the security permissions on the files I am trying to access to ensure it is set to 'Full control'
- I have tried installing a 'Take Ownership' button so that when I right click on folders/files I can take ownership of them. I have tried using this on all the folders on my machine but still cannot access them.

Things you may need to know:

- I only have one user account on this machine, this is the account that I use and had full admin rights.

What determines how a URL Thumbnail gets posted in a link to a page? Sometimes I will provide a link to a webpage for reference like on Facebook and there will be a thumbnail along with the URL link. I recently posted a link on Facebook where the URL posted and linked to just fine. The URL Thumbnail shows a picture of a little dog! The thing is, I can't find the picture of the little dog on the website to which the link goes. The website itself is a huge database which requires registration and I could not post the link here by example, sorry.

Hi to everyone & Hi @ THROOPER!

I am missing some icon thumbnail images.

Vaio SZ1VP laptop, Win 7 / Office 2007 / Bitedfender

- Fixed an Infineon/TPM driver problem - icon images still correctly displayed.
- Followed "blackviper" web page tuning advice to reduce active services - icon images still correctly displayed.
- Followed "blackviper" web page tuning advice to increase PC speed (Win7) for "best performance/best appearance". Amongst other tweaks I set classic windows' basic UI.

Problem started when I reverted to basic Win7 UI.

I already tried many forum solutions (including a few from this forum, deleting cache, reg modifications, MS file check/fix which took 30 minutes, right click on icon, properties, etc - but no option to change icon) etc... but none worked.

What does work is:
Open the file which has the missing thumbnail image and save it with a different name - icon's thumbnail image is restored!

Still can't work out a solution for programs' icons missing thumbnail images. Toolbar Outlook and Skype icons still missing correct thumbnail image but Firefox icon image is correctly displayed.

Throoper helped solve a case: ( http://forums.techguy.org/windows-xp/1024674-missing-shortcut-icons-pictures.html ) by offering 2 links & delete cache db.

I would like to try that, if Throoper has links for Win 7. Any other help/support greatly appreciated.

Many people post screenshots here, which I like. And sometimes those images are displayed as thumbnails, which I also like as it allow you to ignore the image if you want, or select it if you want to take a look.

The problem for me is that once I click a post's thumbnail image, it defaults to a "zoomed out" view which does not allow me to be able to see the text on the image.

Now, if I wait around a bit, wiggle the mouse around a bit, click right button (clear), left button (clear) and leave the cursor motionless for a few seconds MAYBE I might get an orange box with arrows aiming outward to appear.

Now *IF* I move the cursor SLOWLY to the box and click on it, THEN I get the "full" image so I can read the text. Sometimes if I move the cursor too fast the box disappears and I have to do the whole ritual all over again.

This is so aggravating and so stupid sometimes I change my mind and don't even bother to view the image. Stupid thing. Aggravating as all heck.

Seems there ought to be a right-click option to just view the image at full resolution, but there's not. Seems also there ought to be a tab at the top of IE to do the same thing, but there's not. Guess I should mention this is an IE thing and not Windows Viewer or anything else.

What is the deal with this ? Am I the only person that hates this stupid thing ? Don't even know what to call it in order to do a Google search.

Is there some way around this ? Some setting or som... Read more

I have a problem with my Thumbnail folders.

I have a folder (a database, if you like) which consists of a number of folders, each containing a selection of more photos.

Each folder has a thumbnail picture on it to identify it, with a picture sourced from another folder altogether. However, whenever I change/insert a picture into one of these folders, the thumbnail picture changes back to the default view. Is there any way of stopping this from happening, and making sure my desired picture stays permanently as the folder picture?

Sorry if it sounds confusing - please let me know if I need to explain more! This is my first post...

Many thanks

As we know W7 didn't provide the "refresh" option as in WinXP

A:thumbnail refresh in folders

Might be a bit of a hassle but in lieu of anyone else posting I can suggest this, the long way.

In the folder press Alt to call up the File bar and then go to Tools (or press T to instantly expand the menu). At the bottom is the option Folder Options, click this to call up the, well Folder Options window. In this window head to the 'View' tab and in the Advance Settings box you will find "Show hidden folders, files and drives."

Once you check the box for this and apply the change, you should see a new file called "Thumbs.db". Delete that and then wait for Windows to recompile the thumbnail database!
If that's not what you meant then I do apologise if I've listed something you already knew how to do.

Hi All,
Does anyone know if it is possible to adjust the space between the thumbnails of photos while using the thumbnails view in Windows XP folders?

The reason I am asking is that I would like to be able to see more thumbnails at once and XP seems to waste alot of space between the thumbnails unlike this example here instead of what I usually see here . Increasing screen resolution is not an option as it is already suited to what my eyes can handle.

I know it is possible to change the size of the thumbnails themselves using TweakUI but that is not what I am after. I am assuming that a registry tweak would be necessary but I don't know where to look.

JorgenJ,In Word 2007 or 2010, you must check a box "save thumbnail" from the Save As dialog box when saving a document.I opened an old document, selected that box, and saved the document again.I then went to Windows Explorer or the Documents folder. At the top right,  view choices you must select Extra Large, Large, or Medium icons, Tile or Content for the thumbnail to appear for the word document. When I selected those the thumbnail appears. The thumbnail option must be saved when the document is saved or it is not included. That should do it for you. What's the result?

Hello everyone

I come with a question to which at this point I am not sure if there is an answer.

Back when I had Windows 7 I used Stardock IconPackager to change the icons on my pc, included the ones of the thumbnailed folders, and it worked quite well.

Since the program is not compatible with Win 10 I've been trying to do this manually but haven't been successful as of yet.
Spent all day reading the old threads on the Win7 Forums, and followed different methods, such as:

Folder Icon - Change Windows 7 Default Folder Icon - Windows 7 Help Forums
(but it only worked for empty folders or only in small, list or details view, just as the warning says).

Then I tried this more advanced one:
Folder Icon - Change Default Icon - Windows 7 Help Forums
and I think I've done everything correctly because if I use Resource Hacker to check imageres.dll under both System32 and Syswow64, the custom icon shows as you can see on the screen:

I replaced 3, 4, 5 (back), 6 (front) and 162 (full).

Obviously I have rebuilt the icon cache and used cleanup to delete old thumbnails and restarted.. It worked but weirdly, for instance I had my "Pictures" folder inside of which half folders had the new pink icon with thumbnails, and the remaining half didn't. What was weird was that if I opened one of those folders and did some change inside (rename, delete a picture) and went back, it would have reverted to the yellow default one.. :S

Tried re-rebuilding the cache etc but they didn... Read more

Need some major help here. Can’t find anything else via Google.

Computer setup: did a clean install of Vista x64 in January with a new hard drive on a new machine. Moved the older hard drive to be a second drive (E: ) on the computer to store my mp3’s and jpg’s. Family images were stored in a folder on the Public drive of the old machine, so we kept that nomenclature on the x64 install, just pointing the My Pictures folder to the e:\users\public\My Pictures folder, instead of C:\. I consider myself a very knowledgeable computer/software user but this has me stumped! Google nor Microsoft's site has not helped.

I have a real problem that I cannot fix and have tried everything I can think of but there must be something I am missing.

I cannot get a thumbnail image of .mpg files. The files show a square image with the top right corner folded down and a film strip in the middle with mpeg on a white back ground. I want all the files in a folder to show themselves as real images.
The clips/files with .wmv files work great.

If I select the files from this computer on another wireless shared computer I can see the real images as .mpg's.

They are short video clips.

Would you please tell me what to do or send me to some place that can solve this problem.

Hi guys.

Just installed the RC last night, very impressed! However there's two things I'd like to do atm.

Firstly, not an issue just down to RC, but seeing as though I'm going to be sticking with this build for a while I might as well see if there's a solution... I want to turn the taskbar thumbnail previews off! Can't think of their real name lol for me, they just get in the way. Any ideas?

Secondly... I have Windows.old000 from an earlier W7 build. I have 9.4Gb of crap in there that I don't need anymore. I want to delete it, but it won't let me! I messed around with permissions for nearly an hour and eventually "took control" of the folder myself and gave full control, but it still won't have it. Tried dragging it to the Recycle Bin, it comes up with some error like D:\...$Recycle Bin (can't remember the full thing, at work right now) and I even tried to delete through DOS, it seemed to work but in reality actually done nothing. Any help appreciated as I need the space! Thanks.

A:Deleting files & thumbnail previews on RC...

Part one of your question is surprisingly involved - but it can be done - if I understand you right. You basically want the old-school taskbar? The kind that grouped windows into stacks? Or do you mean the 'QuickBar'?

The second part is much trickier - but try this;

1. Click Start
2. Select All Programs
3. Select Accessories
4. Click System Tools
5. Pick Disc Cleanup
6. Select Files from all users on this computer
7. Confirm the UAC
8. Select the drive that contains your old installation
9. One of the options will be to delete your old installation. Select it and
let the Disc Cleanup Utility do its thing.

Let us know if that works.

There are many images that will require many folders. I need help on how to do this.

A:create folders for like images

Right click/select new/select folder/whilst the wording is highlighted(blue) type a name,
if highlight goes then rightclick on folder and rename. You can create as many folders as you want or create folders within folders (its like a filing cabinet, drawers contain folders, folders have folders in them)if you make an error simply right click and select delete.

Hi, im writing my very first thread here.

And this is my problem. I applied a custom folder icon in regedit and for it to work you had to check "always show icons, never thumbnails" but now i cant see thumbnails on images. Like this: no thumbnails. And i really want to view thumbnails on my images.

So is there a way to have thumbnails on everything except folders?

A:Thumbnails on images, but not on folders

So what you did is you applied "always show icons, never thumbnails" on the folder containing the images?

Hi, i recently enabled this view for psd files it works good, but now i have decided to set it back to default,i deleted the priscon.dll but the psd view is still in jpeg?how do i see the psd file original again? thank you.

A:Photoshop PSD files - Enable Thumbnail Previews

It's all in the registry. You need to reverse engineer the script. Once we have worked it out, I shall post it on the tutorial

Right, because we are doing this from scratch, and I was not the original creator, I need a few registry exports to make sure I get it right.

Windows Key + R > regedit > File > Export > Selected Branch

Put in the following lines, one at a time, and then zip up all of the reg files and upload.

Recently and suddenly, all my image files are, when viewed as thumbnails, being displayed grayed out. They open normally, it's just the previews that are messed up. What might be wrong?

A:Image files being grayed out in thumbnail view?

Right click on the thumbnail icon and refresh it.

I'm running Windows XP SP2. If I set a file view to "thumbnail" then explorer crashes if there are any avi files in that directory or any subdirectories below it. Removing the avi files clears the problem

A:Explorer thumbnail mode crashed by avi files

Possibly a codec issue. Or file type associations. Look for any crash related reports in Event Viwer > Custom Views > Administrative Events.

What's wrong with SP3? Better get it before it's gone....

There is probably a really simple answer to this problem, but I've looked in my Windows xp bible and searched MS site (yeah like that's gonna help.

I'm running Windows XP (this monster is new to me). I have my clip art files organized into different folders. While I was organizing them one day the names under the files disappeared. Just poof and they were gone. I've checked on viewing the folders and customizing them to get the names back but nothing I do works. What am I missing here?

A:No files names in thumbnail folder view

Ok... I upload several pics I take with my camera into a folder onto my desktop.

The pic file thumbnails show up in the folder with the file name given to them by the camera.

I usually use 2 pics in the desktop folder in each report I write.

I will rename the pics I need to "1", "2", etc. (I must reuse these numbers for every report I write)

Once I upload the pics and do my report, I delete the pics that were renamed to "1" and "2" from the folder on the desktop.

NOW, when I go back into the folder on my desktop and rename the next 2 pics I need to use to "1" and "2" for use in my next report, the pic file thumbnail changes to the old deleted pic that was previously using the file names "1", "2", etc.!!!!

I can click on the pic file thumbnail and when the pic file opens, it shows the new picture, but I dont want these thumbnails changing and showing the old pic that was previously using the names "1", "2", etc.

I can right-click the newly renamed pic file, which is showing the old (deleted) pic thumbnail (that was previously using the same name) and select "refresh thumbnail", but that is way less than ideal. What is this "feature" that seems to be trying to think for me and how do I turn it off? What do I need to do? Thanks!!!

A:Reusing old pic file name on new pic files shows old pic thumbnail!
