I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, exactly what happens when you try to close, like does it freeze, or does nothing happen at all, after trying to close IE can you still use it, also, have you tried using the task manager to close it?

Also, what version of IE are you using, 6 or 7?

I am attempting to connect my Vista Basic Desktop to my Vista Home Premium Laptop via my Linksys WRT54G wireless router. I currently have all firewalls disabled and have my desktop connected to the router via ethernet cable and the laptop connected wirelessly...

My desktop and laptop are both recognizing eachother but when I attempt to connect to one another I am getting errors or password requests. I will break down the issues from each computer.

When I open the network I see my Laptop, when I double click to open the sharing folders I am prompted for a username and password... I entered my WPA username and password and was given an error that information was incorrect... I tried many variations of this and came up with the same error.

When I attempt to connect to the Desktop via the Laptop it attempts and gives me a error stating to \\DESKTOP could not be connected please check spelling...

I am at a loss for words... I have search high and low for a solution and am now posting here in a last attempt to determine my problem.

I have had transparency working twice with an aero msstyle file and/or a theme file but each time I needed to install WindowBlinds for it to work. After which I uninstalled WB and enjoyed the aero experience. So WindowBlinds automatically turns it on somehow. Due to their trial limitations I can't keep installing every time to kick start aero and it's a bit extravagant to pay for especially when my computer is capable without it. I need to know how to turn it on manually.

I've patched the system 32 files. Set the windows color scheme to Windows Vista Standard. I've enabled desktop composition via setting for best appearance. In the regedit DMV key I've set composition to 1, compostion policy to 2 and colorizationopaqueblend to 0, 1 and 2 (opinions on which # works differs so I tried all three) and it's still not worky. Does anyone know anything else that controls transparency? Of course Microsoft has generously disabled the transparency control in "Window Color and Appearance" on Vista Home Basic so that is not an option.

I would just use VistaGlazz but have never been able to run it on this computer. It crashes every time I open it.

My son has an identical problem. Interesting that Micro$oft choose not to involve themselves with questions of this nature. Too difficult I guess. My son's laptop is a brand new Dell with Vista home and M$ Office. We purchased Vista Business but the upgrade dies with a ""Windows could not prepare the computer to boot into the next phase of installation" error message.

I noted there are dozens of similar problems on the web but M$ is strangely quiet about this problem andthere appears to be no solution.

Micro$oft are prepared to take the cash for the upgrade but not provide the support...

Just bought a new desktop from Dell that was pre-installed with Windows Vista Home Basic, later wanted to upgrade to Windows Vista Business, so I bought the Windows Vista Business separately from the retail store and try to install it.

But halfway during the upgrade installation, an error message popped up and says that some files are corrupted or something, with error 0X80070017, and the upgrade was cancelled.

I have tried many times which included doing a clean install or installing during boot time, all lead to the same error.

The copy of Windows Vista that I bought was a genuine copy and the hardware should meet all requirements, it's a Pentium D 915, 1 GB RAM with 160GB HDD.

Can anyone please help? I need to get the desktop upgraded to Vista Business by this week.

Good evening,

I have Vista Home Basic 32-bit running which I have done for a few years.
I have a genuine Vista Ultimate 32-bit disc which includes Service Pack 1 and also includes Windows Anytime Upgrade.
My question is, how easy is it to upgrade my laptop and will I lose all my documents and settings and programs that I have downloaded etc.
Thanks very much in advance.

A:Upgrade from Vista Home Basic 32-bit to Vista Ultimate 32-bit

Although this is for Win 7- Windows Anytime Upgrade - Microsoft Windows - I think it answers all your questions.

On the other hand, this applies to Vista- Windows Anytime Upgrade: frequently asked questions. As a result, I don't know if you can still use the anytime upgrade.

Hi, I recently bought Vista Ultimate 64 bit and I'm gonna install it on my computer which is currently running vista home basic 32 bit. My question is simple, will I lose all my hard disk's data or will it still be there after the upgrade? Thanks!!

EDIT: I know there is other posts like this but they mention nothing about 32 bit and 64 bit

A:Vista Home Basic 32 Bit to Vista Ultimate 64 bit?

Hi sanine,

Sorry to say that the upgrade from a 32bit to 64Bit operating system is not supported.

I would suggest that you either set-up a dual boot between the two systems until you get the 64 bit running satisfactorily. or back up all your data and wipe the disk for the 64 bit install

I am looking to buy a new desktop and am confused about Vista.

I was told that the only difference between Vista Basic and Vista Premium is the basic version doesn't have the great graphics (don't know what "great graphics" is referring to...);
and the basic version only needs 512MB to run vs premium needs a min 1GB.

1. Which one is better for normal home usage, internet, email, word processing, etc?
2. If I decided to go with the basic version what would be the minimum memory and other specs I would need?
3. What if I went with Premium?

THANKS in advance for any help!!

OK-i used to be able to alt prnt scrn etc to take a screenshot. I understand there is a different way to do this on Vista. I believe it is called snipping tool. from what i have read so far--it is part of the vista ultimate.

My boyfriends laptop has vista home basic. I am looking to purchase my own laptop very soon.

My question is-- 1) Is there a way to get that function on Vista home basic? and 2) Is it an option on Vista Home Premium? I really cannot afford to get the laptops with vista ultimate.

Thank you in advance to all who help.

#1 They should be activated already right out of the box. An easy way to check this would be to right click on "Computer" and select "Properties."

#2 Absolutely save SP1 to a disk for future installations if possible. And yes I would highly recommend installing it on those Vista machines that don't already have it.

I am trying to fix a Vista basic machine, with 2 users.
Suddenly the customer can not log on to either user. Password incorrect.. passwords have not been changed (and yes I have checked cap locks!!!)

Tried a couple password reset programmes.. they didn't work. One couldn't detect any users on the machine!!
If I go onto safe mode. There is no administrator listed and the accounts are still password protected.

I tried to do a factory reinstall (on a separate partition OEM) but to access that it wants the user name and password... and guess what.. it won't accept the password.

I do not have a vista basic disk. I do have a Vista Ultimate disk. Can I use that disk to get system recovery working on a vista basic machine?

Or alternatively can anyone help me figure out how the hell to get in!!!

there are two separate paths. If there isn't any data on the computer you can boot from dvd and format and re-install.

If there is data needed can you safe boot with command promt. at the prompt you can activate the built in admin by typing net user administrator /active

that account shouldn't have a password attached. if it does you probably should start thinking about a virus.

I went from 7 to vista and I kind of like 7 better,, why? First of all the preview options from the tasbar and the way the internet was set up on the notification bar was easy, here on vista a whole window comes up when in 7 it popped up right on the notification area. Little things , i know but yeah. I just installed it, its freshh, and it didnt come with some drivers, so i had to download the drivers from another domputer, put it on a cd and install it that way, now i am getting the rest of the drivers from this laptop now that i have the drivers. Vista looks better in a way though. Still messing around with it. so is there a way I can get those option from 7 on here to vista? thank you. And for some reason the scroll doesnt work on vista. Im sure ill figure it out. Cheers One other thing, on win7 it had a convinient "connect to projector" shortcut I found out how to do it without the shortcut, but is there a way to get that shortcut? Hopefully it comes with the updates.

A:from 7 ent. to vista basic.

I've tried 7 as you state, it is easy to use & full of bells & whistles.

Now as for the shortcut issue you mention, it is hardly worth anything without the back resource to support it! So what software did it initiate or invoke? As this maybe the key to your satisfaction!

Hi, welcome to BC!
It is probably asking you for an administrator password reset disk. Was you account the administrator? if not then boot into safe mode and log on as the System Administrator and remove the password on your other account.

There should be a recovery partition that you can invoke to begin system recovery. Try F10 during boot-up. Otherwise, call the system manufacturer and provide the serial and product number located on the bottom of the laptop.

i was thinking of purchessing the windows vista home basic Upgrade edition. if my computer ever needs to be formatted someday can i still install the OS ? or does Upgrade mean you can only upgrade XP to Vista ?

A:Vista Basic Upgrade ?

An upgrade basically means that you must retain the original version of Windows that you upgraded from. So if you upgraded from say XP Home to Vista Home Premium, you can't then sell XP Home.

Having said that the version is a full version (i.e you can format from scratch) but it will ask you for the XP (or whatever) CD

Hope that helps :)

Hi all,

i wasn't sure where to post this, so i posted it here because it seemed the most relevant place to put it.

So heres my story:
My hard drive is failing. what i mean by this is, sometimes when I boot my PC, it will click(I am 100% sure it is my hard disk clicking), but sometimes I am able to get it to boot(Im currently on it now). I have had several people tell me that from what i tell them it is on its way to the morgue.

I have ordered a new 500gb internal harddrive, but while its in the post, my current hard drive may just die permanently, so while it is working, I have decided to clone it.

So I obtained Acronis true image home 2011, and made a clone of my current harddrive onto an 80gb external harddrive, just temporarily, so if my current hard drive dies, I will still have all the data from it.

My questions are as follows:
1. Is it possible to boot from my external HDD if my current hard drive dies before the new HDD arrives? (just as a note my external hard drive is IDE, i dont have any IDE connectors in my PC, just SATA) If so, how would i go about doing this?

2.when my new HDD arrives, if my current HDD is dead, will the image on the external HDD be a good enough image that i will be able to clone the external HDD to the new internal HDD, and if ican willl the 3rd image boot properly?

P.S. I cant spend any more money at the moment on new components or software, so foptions that utilize what I already have will be greatly appreciated.

A:Cloning vista basic 32-bit

Did you do a full drive clone or just a partition clone? With Win 7 especially, you need the full drive clone.

If the cloning doesn't work, you should be able to open the image and get your data out.

I've searched for three days for an answer to this problem.

A lot of people have or had this problem, but no one seems to know the answer to fixing it. I've searched endless threads on endless forums and found zero answers to the problem. Most people responded by saying they have the same problem and it eventually just went away, came back or they switched to XP/ Linux OS.

The system was non functional from day one. Brand new system. Only internet access was to mfg. websites. i.e. Nero, Windows update, Dell. I doubt I have a virus and KIS 2009 was installed after MS updates and prior to connecting to above websites. I have since reformatted C:, reinstalled the OS from the hidden Dell recovery partition, removed the Nero stuff, KIS 2009, DVD drive, and floppy drive. I have not accessed the internet since other than MS update.

Prior to installing this stuff the system was still dead dog slow. I was very careful installing and removing the drives as to not short anything out, no wires are loose, memory is secure and in place. CPU fan is working, case fan is working, DVD rom is working. HDD? I haven't tested it. Maybe it was bunk from the factory. I'm not sure how to test it. My Dell warranty expired two days ago.

Hi, I have been given an Acer Aspire 5315, virtually unused. After playing with it I replaced the CPU added more Ram and changed the Wireless card from a g to an n. Also replaced the Thermal tape with a copper shim.
The original OS was Vista and had been pass worded which I didn't bother trying to bypass I just installed Win7.
I then decided to install Vista Basic as that was what the COA on the under side was.
I also have an Acer Vista Premium upgrade disc which comes with its own COA.
My question is , is it worth upgrading? Am I going to benefit from it?

I'm thinking of installing Windows Vista Basic on my brother's old computer but i'm unsure on how well it will perform. We've had the computer for a good 10 years so I imagine it's wearing out and during that time it's a had a couple viruses which I believe i've cleared them all off. The main uses of the computer are to browse the web like youtube.com, autotrader etc. and also play a few small games, specifically the RTS game Dawn of War which it can run on low-medium settings in a playable state.

A lot of the time webpages take an annoying amount of time to load up and can sometimes freeze the pc so we're wanting a fresh start with his pc. Would the following be enough for a clean install of Vista Basic to run well?:

Intel Celeron CPU 2.00GHz
ATI Radeon 9600 Series AGP 128MB

He's currently using Windows XP Home Edition.

I have an Acer Aspire 5735z laptop and it originally came with Windows Vista Basic. All was going well until I installed my friends lite version of Windows Premium . When I saw how "lite" premium really was I hated it and tried to get rid of it. I tried to reformat it back to Basic using eRecovery (alt + f10 at startup), only to discover that the option wasn't there anymore! Usually there's a 'Repair Computer' option there, but it's just gone. All that's there now is the option to boot in Safe Mode, so I'm thinking that somehow Premium has wiped the option to recover out?

I'm currently running my laptop on Ubuntu (Linux) now, but I really want vista back.

The Vista Basic CD didn't come with the laptop, nor did a CD to reformat/repair it.

I've tried everything I can think of but I'm out of ideas. Is there any way at all I can get Vista Basic back without buying a Vista Basic CD?

Any help would be much appreciated.

I am working on my nephews laptop. When he first brought it to me it would not boot up at all.I finaaly got it to boot by unplugging the power supply until it booted up and then plugging it back in again.

Current problems are:
The Low disk space error is popping up upon boot up
When Mc Fee loads that is when it seems to restart by itself
The only blue screen I have seem so far is
0x00000000= 2 times

Things I have tried:
ran memory diagnostics test- results unknown
running antivirus in safe mode= found nothing
running bootable antivirus= never booted up from cd although bios was set to boot up from cd
scan disk for errors: fixed problems but still restarts by itself
also tried this advice http://www.ehow.com/how_6815624_repair-vista-startup-command-prompt.html= I am able to boot into safe mode now

also when I can shutdown it says configuring updates it sits at 0 % and then restarts
I can boot in safe mode but once it boots up it shutsdown after everything has loaded up

This problem didn't seem to be this bad until I turned on and ran windows bit defender so any advice will be very helpful right now. Thanks in advance!

A:Vista basic keeps restarting

also wanted to add that the only time it seems to stay on and not restart is when I am doing a scan. He has some programs installed that he wants removed but I can't remove them because it won't stay on long enough to let the uninstaller complete.

Can no longer get into safe mode- it boots into safe mode and once the desktop shows up it restarts.

when I go to command prompt it says x:\windows\system32>
shouldn't it say C: ?

It is an Acer Aspire 4330, vista basic sp2, I did notice that he has another hard drive called data. I don't have a Vista disk,( I use XP home )If I think of anything else that maybe useful,I will edit this post. Thanks again

He has had this around 2-3 months and apparently did not get a CD but was pre-installed. I got it off him today to have a look at and it loads almost but before the start menu or anything appears it comes up with.

"Windows could not complete installation, to install windows on this computer, restart the instalation"

My question is, if indeed he does not have a Windows CD with his Pc, would there be another way of reinstalling it?

Many Thanks for your help.

A:Vista Basic Will not load

there should be a recovery partition. when you first turn on the computer, does it say anything about pressing some key to enter recover (or similar words)

If it does not, what is the computers make and model?

This is off topic for this forum, but here is some information.
There is not a separate download for Home Basic. The Vista DVD contains all versions of Vista, except Enterprise.
On the Subscriber Downloads web page, select Operating Systems.
In the resulting menu, select Windows Vista.
Scroll down near the bottom of that list and select:
Windows Vista with Service Pack 1 (x86) - DVD (English)Includes: Home Basic; Home Premium; Business-Retail; Ultimate;
Hope this helps.

I purchased a new computer and migrated to Vista. Nothing works with Vista. Well, I did finally get QuickTime installed and iTunes. But my new video cam and mic won't work and I can't download Second Life. I read that Adobe Creative Suite is supporting Vista Business but not Home Basic.
I want to install a Netgear wireless router and am afraid to start for fear I will mess up my DSL connection.
I am no techie but I never needed to be with XP. Dell said if I want to go back to XP I have purchase the OS. I read in the forums that you guys think this will work itself out in a year. I thought Vista was supposed to be about improved security. Yesterday all of my Firefox plugins disappeared and with them my research links; and I can not reinstall them. This all smells like a war between software companies. I just want stability. Any suggestions other than wait a year?
