Lenovo Thinkpad S540 Memory Upgrade

Q: Lenovo Thinkpad S540 Memory Upgrade

This morning I received my order for new memory for my laptop and after getting all excited... it didn't work Old memory was: 1x HMT41GS6AFR8ANew memory is: 2x KVR16LSE11/8 I tried all combinations (new banks alone, 2gether with old, different slot, etc), it just never boots (no BIOS screen, nothing). I this topic: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-S-Series-ThinkPad-Yoga/Thinkpad-S540-RAM-Upgrade/td-p/1542834 I read:Your system will support DDR3 PC3-12800 & DDR3 PC3-14900 DDR3 (non-ECC), as your system was shipped with DDR3 PC3-12800, I suggest you to go for the same. You can check with 4GB PC3-12800 DDR3L SDRAM 1600MHz SODIMM.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello, Since two weeks my Lenovo Thinkpad screen flickers on the right side and on boot up or recover from stand by. This becomes pretty annoying and I have updated all the drivers and also upgrading to Windows 10 didn't work neither. The warranty was due June this year, so I don't know that if I have to repair it that it will cost money. But I think it's strange for a screen to be broken in one year and 3 months. If you perhaps know a solution for this or know how it will be handled by Lenovo if I send it away for repairs please tell me. Yours faithfully, Joost Kolkhuis Tanke

Hi, I had an accident with my laptop and althought they fixed it for some reason one of the two word files I was working on is lost. I dont know if may be in my panic I saved one over the other but the two recovery (.tmp files) that Windows created are both different versions of just one file. I tried to access previous versions but although that option is ON on my laptop there are no previous versions of these files (although I've worked on them for several days). Please help! Is there any other way I can try and restore the second file as well?

My S540 takes quite a long time to start booting. The boot process in itself, once started, is fast as it should be, but before the lenovo logo and the spinning circle appears it takes 30 seconds where the screen is on but black (only the background light is on). this problem is OS independent, it was the same when windows 7 was installed, right now win 10, the original build, is installed. Maybe related: I cannot upgrade to win 10 anniversary. After the reboot which should start the upgrade, the notebook is in the state described above for around 2 minutes and then shows the blue troubleshooting page. when you click "continue booting into windows 10" it does this without installing the anniversary update (win 10 1067). S54016GB RAMSSD Samsung Evo 1TBbitlocker encrypted (using the hardware encryption of the SSD)

Hi guys, Looking to purchase the latest Lenovo Ideapad s540 (81NE003GIN). The standard config is an 15 8th gen and comes with 8gb of RAM and a 1TB SSD. I'd like to know what if any parts of this laptop are upgradeable, without possibly affecting the warranty. Can I upgrade my RAM to 16gb? Also, I've been told the laptop screen has a max brightness of 250 nits. Is that sufficient enough for viewing videos in HD? Also if any of you current s540 owners have any issues with baclight bleeding of keypad issues, please let me know - looking to purchase this asap. Much thanks!

Hey Lenovo Enthusiasts! I am about to purchase the Lenovo Thinkpad 550s, and I am tempted to purchase the baseline memory (4GB) and storage (512GB) HDD.  I want to make sure that I can indeed upgrade the memory to 16GB of RAM and the storage to a 256 (or 512) GB SSD. In my research earlier on, I noticed that somebody had posted a link to the parts list:https://download.lenovo.com/parts/ThinkPad/w550s_frubom_20150130.pdf I don't know what half of this technical jargon is, but from what I gather, I have found an SSD made by Samsung on Amazon, and an 8GB memory made by Data Memory Systems that seem to abide. SSD:http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-256GB-2-5-Inch-Internal-MZ-7KE256BW/dp/B00LMXBOP4 Memory:http://www.datamemorysystems.com/parts/lenovo/03X6657/ Questions:1) Could somebody wiser than me please verify that these products will work for the w550s? I was going to purchase them from Crucial, as they say that is is "100% compatible" but I am not sure still.Crucial: http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/compatible-upgrade-for/Lenovo/thinkpad-w550s 2) In regards to the warranty, does anyone know if I were to mess up the data preloaded on the HDD that is put in the laptop, by trying to transfer it to the SSD, would the warranty cover fixing this? Kind regards,Spencer

A:Lenovo Thinkpad W550s Memory upgrade to 16GB and S...

Very disappointing. Yes, I have the same problem (son, since it is your problem!). I note that over 189 people have at least looked at this question you asked before we decided to have you purchase the W550S...and after calling tech support one last time after my son purchased the machine (and was told there should be no issue)-we see BSOD multiple times within an hour.  They happen so quickly that it is hard to even note what the error message is.... I replaced his 512 HD with Samsung SSD 512GB drive. I used a disk duplicator-everything seemed to go great. Then I put in 16GB of RAM-again, everything seemed great. However, the notebook is only now being used frequently as my son is starting school now-and as said above, the BSOD is making me think this has something to do with the SSD or RAM replacement. Yes, obviously, it's fairly easy to replace with the original parts and see if the problem goes away-but he wanted the SSD and more RAM, so even if that fixes the issue-we will likely get rid of the notebook. BUT:  here is what disappoints me:  absolutely no comment on my son's original questions. I'm guessing I won't get input from Lenovo either....will try to call tomorrow, but we are almost beyond the point where we need to return the SSD/RAM and notebook if we want our money back. A little guidance from Lenovo would be appreicated before we need to make a decision.. Thanks,Steve

Hello to everybody,Recently I have bought a Lenovo Thinkpad X220 and I want to increase the memory, (by default is 4 GB) to 8GB or 16 GB. if it is possible. My question is if this laptop support without any problems or errors 16GB RAM of memory, because officially it is only 8GB.RAM, but I have seen on internet, people with 16GB Ram in this laptop, Are there any problem with this? If so, upgrade to 10GB or 12GB RAM would be posible instead? Also I want to increase the capacity in my laptop (by default is 320 GB.HDD), and I want to put a 500 GB SSD Disc, and if is possible to maintain both the Hard Disc anda SSD Disc, it would be possible to put SSD Disc into the PCI Express slot and mantain the Hard Disc at the same time. Or the only possibility is to replace the Hard Disc for a SSD Disc?Thank you very much,Regards.

Hello dear Lenovo Community,my first problem is Wifi connection. I nearly get no Signal. If i am sitting 2 meters away from the router i have 1 bar and if i put it directly onto the router i get 3/4 bars. In my room it doesn't find any wifi at all. I heard this is a common issue so there might be a fix for that.My next problem is the boot process. It shows me the Thinkpad Logo for like 5-8 seconds before it even starts to boot. I've tried erasing the ssd, updating the bios and resetting the bios to defauls. Nothing helped.

A:2 Thinkpad S540 Problems

Welcome to the CommunityRegarding the wifi issue. Are you able to disassemble the laptop (remove base cover)? The wlan antennas wires can be routed with too sharp angles, this decreases the sensitivity dramatically. Just reroute them, straighten the angles. Also, check out the wires connectivity correctness.

I've replaced the thermal compound with arctic mx 4 but still the same temps. Also, the Laptop doesn't charge. If i calibrate the Battery it charges for about 2-5% and then it stops again. A:ThinkPad S540 hardware question

Hi Ogioto, welcome to the forums.

I don't have that machine, but I think that the best way to know about this is to go to the support site of this model, and check under "Documentation" the Hardware Maintenance Manual.

Here I found it.  Check it out to see if it gives you a better idea on what does machine has on the inside.

There is also the system service parts documents that helps you see a ripped off view of the machine.

I hope this helps.

In fact when it happens the amount of pressure doesn't seem to matter. Sometimes it is a letter and sometimes it happens with the Enter button. In any case it goes away after I keep pressing for 5/6 times. I was hoping that anyone here could provide me with a suggestion as to how to fix this problem. Kind regards, Niels

Greetings! I have i thinkpad s540 i7 version which I aquired from a friend who said it was broken and he did not know how to fix it. I noticed the battery was not working so I assumed it was dead and replaced it with a new one. The new battery is recognized by windows 10 but is not charging. I got an error message saying it is depleted and needs replacing, even if its brand new (<1 % wear level) If I disconnect the AC power, the computer dies immediately. It does not start on battery power either. This is also independent of OS (tried with linux and nothing at all). Lenovo settings app is installed and reporting the battery in poor condition. (98.98% of full capacity). The sleep and hibernate function is untrustworthy at best. Although the USB is set to be able to wake the device, after a few hours this is not the case (the computer is connected to an external keyboard, mouse and monitor. I would like to be able to start the computer fra the keyboard since it is kinda a hassle to reach the power button. Often when I want to resume after sleep, it makes sounds as if it is already on but nothing happens ("i" in thinkpad logo flashes softly) and a hard reset is necessary to restart it. other symptoms include fn key LED and mute LED is always on. The buttons are functional but the LEDs remain on at all times. These symptoms is leading me to believe that something in the power management control is bad (hardware side). Now I want to upgrade the memory and I scanned the relevant web pages of Lenovo. Apparently the memory should be PC2100 or maybe PC2700 becasue of PC2100 availability ? Has this been put in to be on the safe side or ?and an additional Q .. can memory modules be mixed ? ie can I add a 512M PC2100 sodimm to get 768M ? or do I need to remove the original 256M and go for 2x 512M ?TIAImbsysop

Welcome to the forum! Your machine can run PC2100/2700 memory, and you can combine it, it will always run at PC2100 speed regardless of anything else. It can be mixed, no questions asked. If the G40 is Celeron powered, it will take up to 1Gb (2x512Mb) of RAM. If it's Pentium 4-powered, you can install up to 2Gb of RAM. Hope this helps.

Howdy All! I just ordered a Thinkpad P70 with a XEON 1505-M processor. It comes with one 16gb ECC memory module. I want to add 3 more and when I checked Crucial.com's memory upgrade options, it only list 1x16GB NON-ECC memory modules! So two questions: 1) Can I mix the 1x16GB ECC memory module with 3 NON-ECC 1x16 modules? 2) How hard is it to install memory in the P70? My last couple of mobile workstations have been Dell M Precisions and adding memory was EASY (no need to remove the keyboard ,etc)! Thanks in advance! Aggie85

Since non-ECC modules are only slightly cheaper I would not recommend it. About 2: for the P50 it is a piece of cake to install memory, it should be no different on the P70.  As for memory: Lenovo currently uses Samsung modules. So if you want to go for the same 16GB ECC modules check for M474A2K43BB1-CPB. I do not know about Cruicial, but at least Transcend also got 16GB ECC modules (check for TS2GSH72V1B). I cannot say anything about the Transcend modules, but I installed two of the 16GB Samsung modules (besides the 8GB module that was already in) in my P50 had no problem so far (even checked with Memtest86+ for a whole night). Cubbi

Currently I am trying to upgrade memory modules on my ThinkPad P51 of type 20HH. It was planned to have maximum, i.e. 64 GB, instead of original 8 GB. After some research four of Crucial 16 GB DDR4-2400 SODIMM CT16G4SFD824A have been obtained. With absolutely no problems two of them have been inserted in slots under the bottom cover. On that stage the laptop starts up and works perfectly with total 40 GB of RAM consisted of new 32 GB and original 8 GB. However, after adding a new memory module under the keyboard and/or replacing original 8 GB memory module with new 16 GB, and/or even putting original 8 GB memory module in the neighbouring slot, the laptop doesn't start up. Several attempts have been done to solve this problem, i.e. BIOS has been updated to 1.47 version, CMOS battery has been removed and returned back to its place, SSD drive has been removed and returned back to its place, the laptop has been turned on with a battery only, with AC power adapter only and with both of them. Nothing of the listed above helped to solve a problem. Did someone face the same problem? Is there a solution for it?

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad W520 since many years and it is still one of the best laptop compared to those available in the market. I have successfully upgraded in the past my HD with a 256 GB Samsung SSD 850 PRO (MZ-7KE256BW). Now I would like to replace this HD with the newest 1 TB SAMSUNG 860 PRO SERIES 1TB SATA3 MZ-76P1T0B/EU.Someone know if there could be problems of compatibility? P.S. the operative system was windows 7 but I moved subsequently to windows 10. Thank you in advance for your reply.

I am a "techno-phobe"- and a "Have No Clue" when it comes to computers.

On another site- someone told me that I could upgrade my laptop by changing out the CPU and hard drive. I went to the Lenovo site to try to get prices, etc- but there is NOTHING of the sort on the site. Only a warning about VOIDING your WARRANTEE.... but I'm already "out of warranty".

Is this possible ? Is this practical ? THANKS

Your memory spec:2GB or 4GB std / 8GB max / PC3-8500 1066MHz DDR3, non-parity,dual-channel capable, two 204-pin SO-DIMM sockets; The 8GB max is two 4GB sticks not one 8GB stick.

Hi guys and/or girls, I am working on upgrading a business laptop which happens to be the Lenovo Thinkpad T410, now im putting an 250GB 850 Evo to replace the INSANELY SLOW HDD, however i am also upgrading the system from windows 7 and upgrading the RAM, now here is where i need help, I am going to be installing a 2x4GB kit of Corsair Vengence SODIMM, however I am unsure whether i should go for the DDR3 1600 kit or the DDR3L 2133 kit, now these are both the same price so the obvious pick would be the DDR3L due to the lower power draw and higher frequency, but the current memory installeld is only 1333, however the laptop is documented to work with 1600 so i know this isn't a problem, however I am unsure if it would even correctly downclock the 2133 or would it simply refuse to post, as well as this, would the laptop still attempt to send 1.5v to the memory or will it automatically do 1.35v as required by the DDR3L, oh how i do wish laptops all offered an "advanced" section within the BIOS which would allow me to tweak all of this stuff, however the only thing the bios lets me do with memory is set an extended mem test during boot which obviously is no help.  Thanks for your help

Welcome to the forum!

There's no hard drive size limit on your machine - so if you want to put in 500GB, go ahead. The same holds true for the drive speed - your choice.

Any 9.5 mm laptop SATA drive - including SATA II - will work fine, but you'd need a modded BIOS to utilize the SATA II speeds on your machine.

T9600 will not work. T7700 should.

Your machine can handle 4GB of RAM for sure. And yes, if both slots are populated, it works in dual channel mode.

You could upgrade the screen to SXGA+ (1400x1050) or UXGA (1600x1200) that were used on T60/p generation.

Enjoy the upgrade process.

A:How to upgrade lenovo thinkpad R500 CPU

Welcome to the forum!

The easiest is to download the HMM (Hardware Maintenance Manual, which you can get from here: click me!) and follow the instructions from page 107 onwards. Take a look at the printed page # of the document, not the one your PDF viewer says.

Hi all, My Lenovo G575 is a few years old, but still works. I have only 1 RAM memory slot soldered onto motherboard. Windows 10 is installed, but quite slow on the internet. Can i upgrade RAM memory from 4gb 1066 speed to one single 8gb card? will it use 8gb or just 4gb? Any options to make internet faster, as i do have BT Fibre and only a few metres from router? Thanks all.

Thanks all.

From the parts list of the Maintenance Manual - your computer will only accept 4gb modules.  If you only have one socket on the motherboard, you are limited to a single 4gb stick.  Usually the system has the option for two memory modules, so I would suggest contacting Lenovo support by phone to discuss this situation.

Cheers.
