My Recycle Bin Icon Disappeared - But Only In Dialog Boxes...

Q: My Recycle Bin Icon Disappeared - But Only In Dialog Boxes...

I recently noticed that something strange had happened to my delete file dialog box - the recycle bin icon had been replaced... I've attached a picture of it. My first thought was that the icon file had been deleted, but no other icons are missing, and the recycle bin on my desktop still looks fine - I tried resetting the icon cache to no avail. This isn't really a problem per se, it just piqued my interest. It started right after installing SP1, but rolling back didn't change anything. Anybody have a clue why this happened, or maybe even know how to fix it?

I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Anyways, does anyone know of a quick way to restore the icon? The text is still there, and I can still place things in there, but there's simply no icon at all, neither empty nor full.....

I have a serious problem. One of the client computers I administrate where I work is not displaying text in some dialog/alert boxes and many properties boxes. This started two days ago; today, Internet Explorer does not display web sites correctly: boxes where the user can enter text to search are appearing as small squares too small to type and read, and the buttons in the web sites are reduced to thin lines and no text in them. Finally, Outlook 2000 no longer displays any of the folders (Inbox, tasks, contacts). This also occurred today.

But here is the truly strange part. It only happens under one user logon. Under a different user logon, there are no problems with Internet explorer, dialog/alert or properties boxes or Outlook 2000. And the user can access her mailbox from another machine without problems.

The computer is running Windows 2000 Pro, SP-2 and is attached to a company network and domain. I believe that the user's file may be corrupt in some way that is causing these errors to occur only when that one person is logged on. And that user has not added additional software to the computer because only the Network and Client Admins have the authority to install programs.

So far I've run an anti-virus program, run Detect and Repair on Office 2000 Premium and run the Emergency Repair Utility from the Windows 2000 Pro disc... twice. But nothing has improved. I'm at my wits end.

Does anybody have any other suggestions?

All of a sudden, the desktop icon for the recycle bin disappeared. When I went to 'explore', it shows the recycle bin on the desktop, but darn if I can find it! :-(
I also right clicked on the shortcut icon, and it show that it is on the desktop. I ever rebooted.
I have made a shortcut icon for the desktop - just do not know what ghost got into the system and stole it!

An update - I right-clicked on the desktop, left-clicked on 'personalize', and on the left-hand side, there was a place to 'change desktop icons' - then it opened another window which showed various icons. The checkbox for the recycle bin somehow became unchecked. So, I checked it and it re-appeared on the desktop!

When accessing the Printer Dialog from VB there is a bug whereby you cannot print to any other printer than the default printer. Microsoft's solution was to produce the VBPrnDlg.dll as a work-around. ie. add another dll to the project.

I have written a piece of software for nutritional analysis in schools and printing is an important part. Schools networks are very badly managed and resourced and dlls are difficult to install on local machines due to levels of protection (to prevent the little blighters wrecking the system). It is difficult to install and register dlls - so it is better if no dlls are needed.

To get around these problems I have been using procedures from "vbaccelerator" but I am unable to obtain any further help. The procedures are provided in three Class Modules, namely: cCommonDialog, gCommonDialog and cMemory. The method avoids placing a control on the main form.

I have downloaded the Printer Dialog demo from:
h://w...etc........vbaccelerator.com/home/VB/Code/Libraries/Common_Dialogs/Common_Dialog_Direct/VB6_Common_Dialog_Direct_Full_Source.asp[/url]
There are very limited instructions. The demo is provided with another dll called CMDLGD6.dll but I am uncertain what to do with this dll.

Do you use EITHER the dll OR the library of Class Modules OR both??

I found a major bug in the demo where the options at the hooked dialog box could not be selected. I seem to have rectified that problem and will be happy to share the solution if anyone... Read more

I'm unsure of what you mean by "activate"
To use it, click on "Start", then click on "Run"
Or, press the Windows Key and R

If it's missing from the menu, right click on the Start Button and select Properties
Then click on the Customize button for the Start menu, then on the Advanced tab
Scroll down to the Run command there and put a check in the box, then click on Apply to save the changes.

Hi everyone. This is my first post. I have an Acer desktop with Vista almost 2 years old now.

Whenever I delete, remame, cpoy/paste files, I get a dialog box showing the progress, but when the process is completed, the dialog box(es) do not terminate. So it presents an undesirable viewing blockage. I have to go to task mgr, or rkill to eliminate the dialog boxes. I've run registry and malware scans to diagnose the problem but I didn't find any answers. What would cause this problem? I'm about ready to go to the last resort and reformat my drive, but I don't want to go that far. Any ideas?

Since Win7, I've noticed that all of my timed system events configured to pop up reminders or Microsoft Office Calendar events always pop up in the background.

Usually, I have sound on, so I can here the Windows notice, but not always.

Also, I have dual screens that I keep pretty busy!

Is there a way I can tell Win7 that I want these dialog boxes to pop up in the front like they did way back in the WinXP day?

A:Dialog Boxes Focusing Behind All

Quote:
This is annoying me as well. It appears to be an issue with Windows 7 (Win7),
not Outlook. By default, Win7 combines the taskbar buttons. By doing so the
Reminder gets embedded into the "grouping" behind the Outlook icon. This
makes the reminder difficult to notice.

If you change the "Taskbar buttons" setting under the "Taskbar and Start
Menu Properties" to "Never combine," then the grouping separates and the
reminder pops-up in front of whatever else you have open.

However, one of the great new features of Win7 is this nice, clean taskbar
grouping. So it becomes a matter of sacrifice in order to get this to work
correctly.

Can you make a screenshot so that we will better understand your issue?

It's possible that what you experience has to do with folder templates. All folders in Windows 7 are assigned to one template or other. When you change properties and click change all folders then you only change properties of all folders of the same template. The template can be changed in folder options -> customize.

For the past couple of months, I've noticed that dialog boxes (For Save as, Open, Error messages, ect) are not appearing. The window will go unfocused for a second but the dialog box never appears. This has only been happening with certain programs such as Microsoft Office, Steam, and Musenotes (Although there are many others too) while other programs such as notepad are working completely fine.
All of the solutions I've found either have to do with AutoCad (Which I don't have) or the dialog box simply appearing off screen (None of the solutions work)
I would be immensely appreciative if someone could shed some light on this problem.

Thanks.

The dialog boxes on various programs have become oversized, beyond screen resolution. This creates a problem for a variety of rather obvious reasons.

This has been an unexpected development and I can think of no reason that it has happened as everything I've done has been as I've always done it. No weird installs or anything unusual.

I checked that the video drivers were up to date and even did an uninstall/reinstall of them, to no avail.

Has anyone ever seen this before? Images of the problem are attached.

Please let me know if any other information might be needed to solve this one. I'm getting ready to just start over and wipe/reinstall everything.

2. After visiting a website (no, it wasn't porn) I started getting a message from Zone Alarm saying that Real Networks was trying to gain access. Since it wasn't something I was intentionally seeking I selected "Deny" and "Remember This Setting," but it has repeated a couple of times. I've also gotten a box that popped up telling me the following:

This computer must be connected to the internet install RealPlayer. Please check your internet connection and click Retry to complete the installation.

That message is then followed, coincidentally or not, by the message in number 1 above. I have no idea whether RealPlayer is something I need or not, but considering that I was not trying to install it and that it is behaving badly I would like for it to go away. How do I do that?

Thanks.

Hello,

I am having an issue in which some dialog boxes (specifically boxes that require input: next, close, etc.) are blank. (see attached) I am unsure of when this began, but I think it occurred around the time that I installed Reimage Plus to help with some other issues. I have since uninstalled Reimage Plus and done a complete malware/virus scan using Malwarebytes and Hitman Pro.

My research suggests that this may be an issue with regsvr32 jscript.dl file. I have tried to reload this file, but I receive a message that says the file was loaded "but the call to DllRegisterServer failed with error code 0x80004005." Continued research of this code suggests a possible registry error. I ran a registry cleaner (I know, not the best thing to do), but the problems continues. The problem also occurs in safe mode.

On a related note, my Windows Update continually fails for a particular update. The update that fails is KB2647753 (see attached). The error code is 80070490. After researching this error code, I downloaded the System Update Readiness Tool from Microsoft. The hotfix was successfully installed (see attached), yet the problem persists.

Hi Nat86 I suggest you to uninstall that Reimage Plus program since it fits in the "PC Booster" category of programs. "PC Booster/Tune Up" programs are part of the worst programs you can install on a system. When it comes to messing up your system (Windows), these are as worst as malware. They are completely worthless and useless to use. The worst is that they'll often take action on your system without you knowing, nor authorizing it, which could lead to your system being altered in a way you don't want it to be or even worst, a "broke" system. Every feature they provide, you can either do it natively under Windows, do it via another standalone executable (which is way easier and safer to use) or they aren't providing something you need. Here's a few examples:Cleaning temporary files: TFC (standalone executable), CCleaner (installed), Cleanmgr.exe (in-built);Managing start-up entries: Autoruns (standalone executable), CCleaner (installed), Task Manager and Registry (in-built);Driver Updater: Not needed, all you need is to go on your manufacturer website so you'll be sure to get the right, official, working drivers for your computer or hardware;Registry Cleaner/Defragger: Completely useless and also dangerous;Disk Defragging: Disk Defrag (in-built), O&O Disk Defrag (installed), Defraggler (installed);Powerful uninstaller: Not needed, only needed when you have to make sure a program is completely uninstalled. Hi All,

the dialog boxes of every program in my win xp SP3, including win xp dialog boxes, show up blank, buttons, radio boxes, lists, etc, come up with no text. In addition, most of the entry fields/text of web pages displayed by firefox or IExplorer appear VERY small and form buttons sometimes reduced in size some others with no text.

I ran AVAST and no virus found, I ran Ad-aware and nothing either, same with Hijackthis, everything seems normal.

In addition, from time to time the task manager shows high peaks in CPU Usage mainly because Iexplorer goes above 100. Moreove, if i go control panel and try to open Display, I got a rundll error saying "C:\windows\system32\shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL"C:\windows\system32\desk.cpl",Display". I did regsvr32 shell32.dll and registration does not generate error, but still same rundll error showing.

Any clues ? :-(

None of my dialog boxes are not showing up. Meaning when I go to "save as.." nothing comes up after I click on that. Hi peeps,

My computer runs fast when I start up, but after a period of using different programs it begins to slow down until the stage where I go to reboot, but it takes about 5 minutes to close everything down, and needs the help of asking 'Do you want to end this app now?'

I've scanned for viruses, spyware and cleaned the registry using Kaspersky AV, Ewido, Windows Defender and TweakNow RegCleaner, but it hasn't made much of a difference.

I think that it may be having problems freeing up RAM after I have used it and so performance deteriates over time. ALthough the task manager doesn't reflect this and the virtual memory is set to system managed.

Can anyone offer any suggestions please?

Thanks in advance

I'm having trouble with certain apps not opening dialog boxes. The two places I've noticed this so far are:

Adobe Photoshop CC - Clicking Save As - nothing happens when clicked. In this case, I can force it to close, reopen and it will then work. Luckily it auto-recovers projects that were open.

Chrome browser - clicking an Upload button on a website application to upload an image. Normally it would open a windows browser dialog but there's a quick blink and nothing happens. Closing and reopening Chrome doesn't fix it, but restarting the computer does.

I think it's a Windows issue and not an issue with Chrome and Photoshop since both started acting up around the same time. It doesn't happen right away. It will work for a while. If I restart my computer, it will work normally for a day or so and then the error will start in one program. It's happening in Chrome for me right now, but if I switch over to Firefox, it works fine for me. So maybe it is a windows issue but an interaction with certain programs.

Any ideas?

A:Couple of fake Dialog Boxes

Hello miwachiru123 and welcome to TSF,

I'm not seeing anything in this log. I would suggest holding off on installing SP2 until we verify that this system is clean or you'll likely have issues with SP2. Just download SP1 or SP1a at this point.

Download Combofix and save it to your desktop.

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

-------------------------------------

Close any open browsers.

-------------------------------------

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Post the ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

When running macros that cause dialog boxes to come that require you to answer yes or no to move on, is there a way to get a piece of code in there that will automatically answer yes?

In my case, I'm running an openquery macro on a "make table" query. It will (1) tell me that I will be modifying data and if would like to continue. (2)It will then tell me that the current table will be deleted. (3)It then tells that it will paste "x" number of rows to the new table. I would like, if possible, to answer "yes" to all of these questions.

A:Answering dialog boxes automatically

You can turn off the prompts alltogether by going to tools > options and the Edit/Find tab and in the confirm area uncheck everything.

I maintain a computer that has six user accounts. I also am setting up a inactivity screensaver on the users. When I right click DESKTOP.....PERSONALIZATION.......SCREENSAVER the screensaver property box opensand I select the screensaver desired and adjust the settings. I then click on APPLY to lock in the settings. This routine works fine with four of the users. On the other two, I am not able to see the APPLY button because the property box is too large, the APPLY button is just off the bottom of the screen. There are no scroll bars I can use and I cannot resize or move the box. I cannot reach the Apply button for these two users. I have tried to change resolution, resize the fonts which are now at 100%. I don't know what else to do. Anybody?

A:Some users, not all, have large dialog boxes.

I would look for any difference between the 2 oddball accounts and the others. See if all are set to 96 dpi. See if the system default font size is 8. Strange as it may seem, even after Vista I found when doing a Property Page COM DLL that if I tried to use any font size larger than 8, the tabs of the property page and their contrents and controls went all out of kilter. It had to be 8 or the Property Page was unusable. I suspect it's something along that line.

I'm running an NVIDIA GeForce Ti 4600 128 MB video card, with new drivers which I downloaded from nvidia in early June - 71.89, and using a SONY GDM-FW900 monitor at 1600x1000. I'm running a P4 with Windows XP, SP2, and plenty of resources. I have 1 GB of RAM, and 500 GB of mass storage

I have a desktop display problem, which appeared after I installed the new drivers. I have 6 printers installed on my system. When I bring up printer windows to set "printing preferences", the right side and bottom of the dialog box window is chopped off, leaving me without access to important printer settings. I have played with every possible variable in the display settings, such as font size, icon size, etc., etc.. Nothing will bring things back to normal, as they were before I upgraded the video driver. I tried reinstalling the printer drivers, but to no avail. There are 3 printers which exhibit this, and 3 printers whose dialog boxes are perfectly normal

Strangely, 3 of my printers seem to have the dialog boxes OK. The others are a mess.

The problem must be with the video driver. I see that a newer driver from nividia is available - 77.72, which I downloaded. Should I try this driver, or should I uninstall the present nvidia driver, and use XP's generic driver??

I must have access to my printers' functions, and I don't know the best path to do this now. All was well before I upgraded to the 71.89 driver. I was still using the drivers installed when ... Read more

Running Windows XP Pro.

I had some bad Trojan viruses on my computer and I don't know if they caused this damage, but when I insert a DVD in either of my drives, I get no box asking what I want to view them with. Also, now, when I go to My Computer and right click on the DVD, there is no "Open With" option. The only way I can view them is to open VLC media player and tell it to Open Disc.

Should I just insert my original Windows XP software disc and "repair"?

Also, I have never been able to view DVDs in WMP. It has some weird ghosting effect when I play them, like a double, triple image. Does anyone know how to fix this as well?

Thanks!!!!

This is a persistant issue that I can't seem to nail down.

The following dialog boxes do not open.
Open File - Such as when attempting to upload files for Yahoo Mail, Deviant Art, Photobucket.
Save Image As...
Save Link As...
Save File As...
The dialog boxes work in Internet Explorer, but not Firefox or Chrome. A small open source program written in C# also is unable to open files. When a 'browse', 'upload file', or similar button is pressed the application shows a split second flicker that could possibly be the window losing focus and then immediately gaining it again. The Open File dialog box appears fine in MS Word, Photoshop, and Open Office. Oddly enough, the open file dialog box also appears when using GMail within Firefox.

Thinking maybe the dialog box had been pushed off the screen, I used CCleaner to wipe the Window Size/Location Cache. I also tried uninstalling and reinstalling java in case there was something wonky there. Running Firefox in safemode does not fix the issue and neither does restarting the system.

To my knowledge no changes have been made to the system. This functionality worked as intended on Sunday, on Monday it did not. The only change during that time was the installation of Blizzard Entertainment's Diablo 2 and a glide wrapper for it.

Help!

Well, the problem that I'm experiencing isn't that big of a deal, but it is bugging me, so I decided to get it fixed. I've been looking everywhere (even in 2 languages) how to fix it, but I didn't find the solution, so I'm posting a thread here.

So, when I'm dragging a window (you know, the dialog box where all my stuff is) around, a frame appears at the move event. It used to be like when I drag it I can see all my stuff moving with the dialog box. Now it's like I wanna move the box somewhere else, a frame appears, so I can see where I wanna put that box and when I'm done placing it, the contents appear.

I looked it up in the control panel, but I still didn't find a place for that to be changed. I know where I could find that on win xp, but now I'm using win 7 HP. I cannot remember when this started to happen, but I discovered it today, that it's not like it is supposed to be.

I hope I made sense and I hope to get it fixed with your help. I feel real dumb right now, because the solution to my problem seems to be so easy and usually I aint that dumb with computers.

A:A small problem w/ dialog boxes

Hello Helena, and welcome to Seven Forums.

This can help you out with this. You would just need to check the Show window contents while dragging box in the Visual Effects settings.

Show Window Contents or Outline While Dragging

Hope this helps,

Thanks for comprehension and any advice

For some reason, the text is not showing up in the dialog boxes, which makes it impossible to download software unless you have a VERY good memory about where the "Next" button is. The buttons show, but absolutely no text. Anyone had this problem? Is it the registry? A driver? It just started when I booted up.

A:Text drops out of dialog boxes

For some reason, the dialog boxes are no longer showing text, just the buttons. Can someone tell me why? I uninstalled and reinstalled Java and JRE, but that didn't work. I tried all the personalization stuff, and that didn't work. I can't figure out why this would happen, since nothing new occurred. Anyone experience this?

For some reason, all the text is no longer appearing in dialog boxes, such as printing, downloading, and installing--and even Avira status boxes. The buttons show up and the box border, but no text of any kind. I tried reinstalling Java and JRE and I tried all the personalization stuff. I even downloaded Ultimate UI Tweaker and nothing. Does anyone have suggestions. I'm fairly computer literate, but I'm no programmer. I tried a an MS-sanctioned registry cleaner, but aside from pointing out that I had errors, it didn't do much to repair anything.

I have attached some photos that hopefully illustrate the problem better than I can. It seems that on one of our Dell business machines is somehow screwed up. In Macromedia Fireworks the bottom and right toolbar are severely oversized and dramatically decrease the ever so precious work room. Also in our Lexmark scanner import window the same kind of problem occurs but it is more of a problem, because it cuts off some of the very important "Advanced Options" that allow you to set the scanning resolution. I have tried the System File Checker in Command Prompt and it still seems to be doing this. Dell Tech support won't even talk to me since the warranty is expired (which is very rude especially to a business) .

Hopefully someone here will be able to help me.

Hi all

Got my brand new laptop with Vista on Saturday and started installing my applications, games, files, settings... Everything went well, I haven't had a problem that a patch couldn't resolve.

Yesterday I started noticing that I get an awful lot of dialog boxes that become unresponsive. Examples are the dialog box
"are you sure you want to uninstall this application" in control panel,
"do you want to save these attachments" in outlook,
"do you want to add this site to favourites" in firefox,
...

in all cases, the box just sits there, none of the buttons working. Even if I leave for 10 minutes, they remain frozen when I get back. I have the impression that this happens more, when I start up my laptop and start working right away, than when I start it up and leave it idle for some time, but that sounds strange...

With enough restarts, I've eventually solved every problem I had until now, but it's a bit annoying to say the least, that I have to restart the computer every time something becomes unresponsive at random, hoping that it will be allright the next time!

Is it possible that I have messed up the OS already in such a short timeframe?

Thanks in advance for any help...
Some details:
Asus A8Js notebook, 1GB memory, Intel Core 2 Duo 2GHz, Vista Home Premium.
Installed MS Office 2003, a bunch of games (all of which needed some form of patching) and that's about it...

A:Mysteriously non-responsive dialog boxes!

I've found that once Vista reaches the desktop it takes a little longer to finish its startup business and be ready for other operations than XP. Give it an extra 20 seconds or so before launching programs.

Also right click on the Taskbar and open the Task Manager and see if any particular process is consuming excess CPU time.

The Search Indexer can be active on a new system and this might work itself out in a couple of days -- or you can disable it.

http://www.jimmah.com/vista/Performance/indexing.aspx

In the Control Panel > Performance Information and Tools > Advanced Tools > Adjust the appearance and Performance of Windows -- you can set certain options to be unchecked and improve performance significantly.

The biggest hog is the Aero feature -- which is described as "enable desktop composition"

The only items I keep checked here are "show thumbnails instead of icons", "smooth edges of screen fonts" and "use visual styles on windows and buttons"

I am using Windows 8 Pro 64-bit.

In previous versions of windows, dialog boxes used to pop-up as required on top of other screens to indicate if there were problems or if action was needed (e.g. if you were copying a file from one location to another and if that file already existed there, you were asked what you wanted to do).

However when at the desktop level of Windows 8, dialog boxes remain in the background and due to grouping of the same icons together in the taskbar it is often difficult to see if a dialog box has popped up and requires action.

For example: if I am copying a file from one location to another and I have a Windows Explorer window open covering the whole desktop screen, apart from the taskbar at the bottom. If the file already exists, a dialog box opens but it is hidden behind the Explorer screen - the only indication is that another "file" icon opens in the taskbar, but hidden behind the existing explorer file icon so it is difficult to see - so that you are often unaware of the issue and are assuming that the transfer is going ahead, unaware that your intervention is needed.

Is there any way to get dialog or pop-up boxes to always appear on top, so that you are immediately aware of any issues or where action is needed?

Many thanks for your help.

I'm running Windows 8.1 with all the latest updates as of 8/20/14. Whenever a dialog box appears, it shows up on the second monitor. This didn't happen before Update 2 but it's a pain for my wife since she doesn't turn on the second monitor and thinks software is locked up when it's only trying to ask for input on the monitor that's off. Is there a way to limit dialog boxes to the active monitor?
I have the same version of Windows at work and it doesn't do this. It displays dialog boxes on monitor 1 which is what I want.
