Q: Period....

Hi, can somebody tell me why is it that when I delete a letter or phrase, I end up with the period(dot) that is on the delete key.
Thank. you.

Preferred Solution: Period....

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Period....

Can you give us a screen shot of this to better understand what is happening?

Hello Everyone,
I have an on going ATA deployment, where the customer wants to know, the possibility of having the logs / event retained for 1 year and an approximate idea on the impact of storage and any limitations for MongoDB.
As per the ATA sizing tool and article the requirement of ATA center falls in the below specification.

Packets per second from all DCs

CPU (cores*)

Memory (GB)

Database storage per day (GB)

Database storage per month (GB)

2,000 (2,500)

So we have a approx. storage requirement of 3.6 TB per month, so how long are the logs/event on ATA center kept by default and can we change the retention period for the same.
Thank you,

Iqbal Johar

Hello guys, just read my story this is all true.
Okay so I wanted to get a better graphics card so I got this exact card
Newegg.com - EVGA 01G-P3-1370-TR GeForce GTX 460 (Fermi) 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card

and my computer is a Dell Studio XPS 8100 Service Tag is C06PNL1 for the computer

but anyways, the graphics card I bought fits inside but the problem is that it has two PCI adapters and my PSU wont support that
My PSU is 350 watts at the moment

and I was wondering, is it okay to upgrade my PSU to like a 600 watt PSU?
this is the one i want
CompUSA.com | CUL-650B | Coolmax CUL-650B Power Supply

dell told me that it could screw up other parts of my computer and void warranty

but should I get it or not? All I want to do is game on my new graphics card DX

A:Need Some Help Period

It says here:

GeForce GTX 460 1GB Power Consumption and Thermals | bit-tech.net

that the power consumption of a Windows 7 system with that graphics card is 250 to 270 watts at load and about 136 at idle.

Dell generally uses decent power supplies, so your PSU may handle it OK. Can you get an adapter so your PSU will have 2 and match the video card?

Dell used to use some oddball connectors, so I don't know whether an ordinary ATX PSU will necessarily hook up correctly in your model 8100.

But 600 watts is more than enough.

So I've been asked to wipe an XP Home computer and replace it with XP Professional, and up until now, there have been no problems. Well, it hasn't taken long for one to crop up.

There are no connections listed in the Control Panel. Not one. And I haven't the foggiest idea on how to set one up (Networking is not my strong suit).

Anyway, the laptop is normally connected on a DSL connection.

Any ideas to get it working again?

I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on why there is a 30-day "evaluation" period prior to activation.

Typically, someone downloads a [free] evaluation to try out the software prior to making a purchase. However, that is not the case with Windows as a customer would have to purchase the OS even to try it out.

Would there be any difference of Microsoft required the activation upon completion of the installation?

Thanks in advance for your insights.

A:30-day Evaluation Period

The 30 day trial is actually misleading. It is not supposed to be a trial, but merely a grace period before you need to activate. You are right, it does not make any sense to require the user to pay just to use the trial.

Technically, it is illegal to install Windows 7 on a machine unless you have a product key for it. Read though the EULA:

Hey all. I haven't been here in awhile and the reason why I'm here is very very curious. You see... I'm a pretty techy guy and can fix things pretty easily, but this one has me baffled. First, I'll give you my computer specs so I can break this down as fast as possible.

MoBo: MSI A75-G55 Military Class II
RAM: 8GB Kingston HyperX Genesis DDR3 1600MHz (4GB x 2)
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 500GB 7200RPM SATA 3.0GBs
CPU: AMD A6-3650 Quad Core FM1 Socket Series
PSU: 650w 4-pin connection

Now let's move onto the problem... Whenever I power on my computer, it won't boot. At all. Not even to the intro screen showing you the motherboard label. Can't go into BIOS. ANYTHING. The curious thing about it is that I was using a Gigabyte A75-UD2H board and that's when it started, so I got a new board, yet it persists! I still cannot boot into BIOS and I know if you have a faulty HDD, it will at least recognize the MoBo first then tell you it can't find the HDD, which spins up fine and works perfectly... The CPU isn't burnt out or anything and I just really can't figure this thing out! If anyone could help me out it would be MUCH appreciated! I want to stop tearing my hair out and get off my sister's computer as SOON AS POSSIBLE! Thank you so much!

My folders with period (.) on its name will lost the folder name after the period. But the folder name itself doesn't change
Sometime after reboot the problem is gone but will back after some time

Note the Type and the name. They should be "NokiaCooker_2.9" and "NaviFirm+ 1.7"

In file inside the folder properties, the location shows the right path, but in folder path not (when in edit mode however, it shows the right path until I press enter to exit edit mode)

same with above

Sorry for bad English and explanation

A:Folder Name after period is gone

I'm confused.

Would you give me one and only one example of folder name which is not appearing correctly?

A smart move is to never use a period in a folder name.

Use the period for its original purpose, that is, as the separator between folder and extension or put another way as the first character of the "extension".

I have a HP ProBook 6550b laptop. It has the wide keyboard with the number keys on the right (as well as across the top row). The del key is also on the right. The del key has a period in what would normally be the shift or uppercase position. Whenever I try to delete a character it inserts a period instead of deleting. It will still do this regardless of whether number lock is on or off and regardless of whether shift is used or not.
Does anyone know how I can get it to delete as it normally should??
NOTE: A similar question to this was also posted by someone else in a previous thread but the solution offered, ie, toggling the number lock, did NOT work.

Gaming LCD's

I am wondering what the best lcd monitor for gaming is. I am hooking this up to dual 7800 gt's and want to take advantage of this by buying a premium monitor. I know that for gaming lower response time is better and that native resolution should be relatively high, any help would be appreciated. By the way, im looking to spend around $500.

A:The BEST gaming lcd...period

For $500 you could easily buy any high-end 17" LCD. And for 19", $500 will get you a pretty good one, if not a great one. LCD prices are changing so rapidly.

But if you get a 19", make sure it suits some basic things first, like the type of connection. Is it DVI? Does it match your vid card outputs? Getting a digital signal is the first thing to look for. Then make sure it handles your favorite resolution. For 19" this would be like 1280x1024 or even 1600x1200.
After this, the best thing to do is find a site that runs comparisons on LCDs. Select the 3 to 5 or so that you like best and compare side to side. You'll see who has quicker response times, brighter picture, more features etc...
PCWorld has such comparrisons, check tomshardware.com, then just do some googling.

Couldn't say what is the "BEST..period". Some people would say only CRTs can be the best.

ok heres the problem:

just recently my computer has refused to go past the Starting Windows XP screen (with the stupid blue bar that scrolls < to >). it continues to hang up on that screen (the bar is still scrolling btw), i even left it there for almost an hour and nothing happened (except for the bar scrolling). so i decided to reformat my HD. well i went to put in my XP disc and after booting from disc and loading all the necessary components, it would stop on "Setup is starting Windows." so i tried putting in my Win 2000 disc and deleting the partition, that worked. so i put the XP disc back in and restarted the cpu, still hangs up on "setup is..." after a few restarts i managed to get past that and reformat the HD.

after many tedious hours of reinstalling drivers, etc. i still have the problem, it still stops at the scrolling blue bar screen. i tried restarting the computer in safe mode but it will not go past:

now i am completely lost and frustrated
this is completely beyond my knowledge for PC repair, any help will be greatly appreciated.

quick notes: reformatting the HD did nothing; cant get past "setup is..." to repair; safe mode isnt working; starting with last known configuration didnt work either (hangs up at the starting windows screen [bear in mind that the stupid blue bar is still scrolling]).

Welcome to TSG....

I would suggest going to the hard drive manufacturers web site and downloading the hard drive diagnostics for this particular make and model number hard drive and running it to see if the hard drive is still OK.

Also I would check all connections power and IDE cable connections to make sure they are OK. If you have another hard drive I would take this one out and install the other hard drive to see if it does the same thing.

Okay, it's been a while since I've posted a problem, and I hope I can communicate it properly lol.

The Hardware:
-=Mobo1: Gigabyte EP43-DS3L
-=Mobo2: Abit FP-IN9 Fatal1ty
-=CPU: Intel Core2Quad Q6600
-=GPU: ATi Radeon HD4850

The Issue At Hand
Well, it's pretty simple. I can't get it to boot overclocked... not at all - on either of these boards, each of which has been touted for easy overclocking (on a budget).

I'm not a newbie to Overclocking... but I AM a newbie to overclocking Intel chips (A previous AMD Fanboy). I've been told, and have always assumed, that it's the same idea.

I gave up a month ago when it just didn't work, but now it just sits there, with that giant Zalman and the 360mm case fan doing nothing but look cool (Which they do excellently).

What I've already tried pretty much comprises what's worked for me in the past; raise the clock speed in increments, raise voltages marginally, and/or lower the clock and raise the multiplier. Every time, no matter how minimal the change was, my computer failed to post, but instead beeps violently (yes, violently) on both boards, forcing me to clear the cmos and start over (Thankfully, ... Hi hunttom.

The crash dump is not saying anything precisely. Though a stop 0x3B is usually either a failing device driver (mostly graphics driver) or failing memory. So ......

Test your RAM modules for possible errors.
How to Test and Diagnose RAM Issues with Memtest86+
Run memtest for at least 8 passes, preferably overnight.

If it start showing errors/red lines, stop testing. A single error is enough to determine that something is going bad there.

If it does not show any error, enable Driver Verifier to monitor the drivers.
Driver Verifier - Enable and Disable
Run Driver Verifier for 24 hours or the occurrence of the next crash, whichever is earlier.

Why Driver Verifier:
It puts a stress on the drivers, ans so it makes the unstable drivers crash. Hopefully the driver that crashes is recorded in the memory dump.

How Can we know that DV is enabled:
It will make the system bit of slow, laggy.

Before enabling DV, make it sure that you have earlier System restore points made in your computer. You can check it easily by using CCleaner looking at Tools > System Restore.

If there is no points, make a System Restore Point manually before enabling DV.

If you fail to get on the Desktop because of DV, Boot into Advanced Boot Options > Safe mode. Disable DV there. Now boot normally again, and try following the instruction of enabling DV again.

At this time there is no official word on exactly what will be released!
But I'm sure they will offer this upgrade as they did with Vista & you are right, it is the best cheapest way of getting the FULL retail OS!

At the very least you should be able to save 1/3 (or more) that of the original full retail price upgrading to the upgrade disk.

I've owned my computer since May 1999 - it hasn't really given me many problems until now. First of all, her specs:

Abit KA7 mobo (uses Via KX133 chip)
Athlon 700 OC'd to 800 (using Afterburner chip - made by same company I bought computer from, Outside Loop)
256 PC133 (Crucial)
Asus v6800 DDR Geforce 256
Maxtor DiamondMax Plus40 30 gig harddrive (Ultra66)
Pioneer 16x DVD
Plextor 8x burner
Windows 98SE
Soundblaster Live! Value

Now, the problem. Every once and a while (like maybe once a month) the computer would have a problem rebooting when reset ... the hard drive would seek and it'd detect everything, but it wouldn't establish a signal with the monitor.

Well, recently it's been doing it a lot more often, taking 2 or 3 times to boot up. I came home from school today, and it wouldn't turn on at all.

It seems to be POSTing, but I don't hear the beep. Here's what I've done so far:

- Swapped monitors: no effect
- Swapped video card (including using a PCI and AGP): no effect
- Swapped hard drives: same
- Unhooked CD-Rom drives: same

And then I tried to see how far it was making on the POST, so I booted without a processor hooked up, and didn't get any warning beeps, so I'm thinking it must be either a motherboard or power supply issue.

Any suggestions or courses of action? Thanks in advance.

The 30-day trial period on an application I downloaded has elapsed (Macromedia Dreamweaver) but I could do with it for a few more days and don't want to fork out $300 for the full version.

Anyone know of a hint/cheat to let me back in? Downloading it again doesn't help, nor does emptying my cookies folder.

How does my PC know I've already had my 30 days? Any help would be appreciated.

A:Trial period is over, how can I get back in?

That info is stored in the Registry. You could try doing a search.

Hi, I use Windows XP Pro and I am getting this error message in the system event log everytime I log in. Now I only get one, but just recently there are like 3 or 4 in a row many times during the initial log in to the internet network.

I have tried to search everywhere and google and yahoo for an answer but never was able to get a clear solution.

Luckily, I am able to get online just fine but the idea of this showing up constantly bothers me. It was fine, for about 4 months it stopped showing up after I did no changes to my system but its now back.

Also for a while I was getting something about user cancelled something but I have not seen that in a long time.

I tried to unplug the modem and cables to reset the IP , but that doesnt help. Also not that my service uses a Dynamic IP and I cant switch to static IP.

Its called Event: 1003 Source: DHCP

Your computer was not able to renew its address from the network (from the DHCP Server) for the Network Card with network address ------------. The following error occurred:
The semaphore timeout period has expired. . Your computer will continue to try and obtain an address on its own from the network address (DHCP) server.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Just a very quick question . If your installing a trial of Windows on your operating system how many days do you have using it, because I got a client and he wants Windows 7 home.

A:30 day Trial Period of Windows..

After Win 7 is installed you have 30 days to enter the Product Key. If he is only going to use it for 30 days and delete it, that is a lot of wasted effort to then take it off. I would hope that he knows he wants Win 7 for long term.

Hello, and thank you soo much for helping!!

I'm running Windows Vista Ultimate Home Edition with unknown service pack addition. The machine is an inspiron 1720 and is about 1.5 years old.

The problem I am having is that my machine will freeze after about 15-20 minutes when it is left alone. If I am using it it runs fine. But say I leave and come back about 30 minutes later it will be completely frozen. I will have to hold the power off button to turn it off and then turn it back on.

Just today a problem appeared from the computer saying "A problem with your video hardware caused Windows to stop working correctly."

Well here's the problem:

My computer is not a bad computer, it runs good. But for a long time (I have put it off) it has not been booting up for some odd reason. I turn it on and the screen will not show anything. The computer itself seems to be running fine, but just no visual. I have unplugged, replugged, nothing is unplugged, and nothing seems to be out of place. I have no idea what is wrong; Please help!

A:My computer won't boot at all. period. :(

If you are not getting any internal speaker beeps, then you have a blown graphics card or a blown monitor. If you have an option to run graphics from the motherboard (vis a bios check) try that to see if the monitor has any output.

Hi folks. I have beed having problems with stability with my vista x64 system. After crashing several times from video driver problems (Nvidia 9800GT) Vista won't boot in any mode safe, restore to last known, etc. I put in the original disk I purchased and I get

Status: 0xc0000225

Info: An unexpected error has occured

I can not even get to the repair screen or even put on a clean install. The x32 disc will boot but has no x64 repair tools. What do I do?

Everything has been sweet until updating last week!

A:Vista x64 won't Boot Period:(

Hi Tetmatek, all i can suggest & has worked for me is to dissconnect your power sources battery as well if it is a laptop hold your power on button down for 10 seconds then leave it for half an hour & then reconnect your power press your on switch and hope for the best
If it does boot up you probably want to address the offending video driver problem as it is my guess this is the cause
(in my case i didnt & that is why i have a glorified doorstop that resembles a laptop)

I have 300GB of my hard drive partitioned off for backups, and I periodically do a backup on an external hard drive. I haven't had a problem with this setup until a few days ago, when my backup space completely filled. This wasn't typically a problem; I'd just delete some old backup periods and move on. Now, however, I discovered that my backup period is 3/27/11 through today, and I can't delete that or I lose my entire backup. (Before anyone asks, I do save only the most recent system image.)

Is there any way to manually control the backup period time to prevent this from happening in the future? I'll solve my immediate problem by extending my backup partition until I can delete an old backup period, but I'd like to prevent this from happening.

A:Backup Period Too Long

My experience has been that Windows (file/folder) backup will continue to add to the existing backup set until at some point it decides to create an additional new backup set.
- A reimage will trigger a new backup set.
- Change of backup location will trigger a new backup set
- deleting all existing backups will trigger a new backup set
Apart from these observations I don't know what algorithm Windows uses to trigger new backup sets.

It's clumsy, but you can use "Change settings" to toggle between two backup partition locations to achieve what I think you want.

Windows backup (excluding images!) adds incrementally to the set. If your sets are getting too large then you probably need to prune off some of the more static data using simple drag and drop to a location and exclude this from the normal backup set.

and my second question is; is that ok ? if i install ATA center  and ATA gateway on same machine and redirect traffic from DC via port mirroring ?
Thank you.

I am trying to find similar information like this ( http://www.dell.com/support/Article/us/en/bebsdt1/SLN80373/EN ) about the Latitude E5570 laptop.
Tests show that the TPM is locked after 15 incorrect PIN entries but the lockout period is indefinit. So we need to manually reset the lockout period using the TPM owner password. I was wondering if this behavior could be modified to for example a lockout period of 8 hours.

Title pretty much sums it up.  I cannot get the latest version of Java to download onto my machine.  After downloading it and running the .exe, it pops up saying 'This program may have not installed correctly', every time.  The truth is it's wrong, it didn't install AT ALL.  Clicking 'Reinstall with recommended settings.' does absolutely nothing.
No Java file appears in the programs (86) file, nor does Java appear in the control panel.
I successfully downloaded the last version of Java 7 to come out before it updated to Java 8, went off without a hitch.  I access the Java dashboard through the control panel thinking I could then just update it to the latest version of Java 8 from there.
No dice, nothing happens after clicking update.
I tried utilizing the offline version and installing it, only to get the same results.  Even tried doing it in safemode, again, nothing at all happens.
Is Java 8 just that broken, or do I have to sacrifice my f***ing first born to get it to work???
One thing I noticed while cleaning my registry with CCleaner after another failed attempt was it mentioned an 'ActiveX/Com' issue with Java, I don't know if this is relevant to the problem in any way, but there were a lot of them listed.

A:Java will not install. Period.

Does right clicking the installer and selecting Run As Administrator work? Are you using the web installer or the full offline installer? If the web installer then download the offline installer and right click the exe file > Run As Administrator.
Running the offline installer should detect and old version and give you a dialog to uninstall before installing the new version.
