T440P power adapter

Q: T440P power adapter

Hi all, A few days ago, the rectangular plug on my old charger finally separated from the cable, marking the end of an era in laptop power supplies. Having used third-party adapters before with good results, I ordered Elecbrain's 90W slim-tip adapter as a replacement off of Amazon. The new adapter charges my computer, but sometimes (maybe about 1 out of 3 or 4 times) fails to charge effectively ("plugged in, not charging"). I often have to wiggle the computer end of the plug in the port a bit to get it to charge at all; it's also much harder to insert the plug into the computer than any of my previous cables. 1) Has anyone had any negative experiences with the Elecbrain adapter, and 2) in the likely event that I return the Elecbrain adapter, there any difference between these three official Lenovo adapters: 0B46994, 888015012, 4X20E75140? One of them is not labeled as "slim tip" and one of them is for the ThinkCentre instead of the ThinkPad, but the thumbnails all look identical. My machine is a Thinkpad T440P purchased in late 2015, model number 20AN006NUS.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

So, my two 170w AC adapters for my P51 arrived yesterday from Lenovo.  I grabbed one of them this morning and headed to work - only to discover upon my arrival that the adapters do not include the power cords. I have three adapters and cords for a T440p.  Will these power cords work with the P51 adapter? (On the bright side, I only have 3h:10m left in my work day today...)

A:T440p adapter for 2nd hard drive?

Yes, but think carefully before you commit to that, especially if you want to use a platter drive and not an SSD. HDD in the optical bay have two downsides:1.  They make noise.2.  They make heat. There's no efficient way to exhaust waste heat from that bay and it will come up through the keyboard. Better idea:  get a large SSD and keep the optical drive.

Hello Lenovo Community, I got my T440p three years ago. Now it cannot power up at all. I did the following test. 1. Removed the memory modules, removed hard disk, removed optical driver.2. plug the external battery and AC adapter.3. The red LED on the A side, the dot on "i" of "ThinkPad" will blink three time. I can tell the laptop is intial powered per the manual.4. Press the power butoon, nothing displayed, the light on the power button is off, no fan running, no beep.5. Disconnect the coil-battery of BIOS, and re-connect after about 10 seconds.6. plug the external battery and AC adapter.7. The red LED on the A side blink 3 times. Press the power button. I heard 5 short beeps. The fan is running. That means the power button is still functional.8. Unplug the AC adapter and external battery (because i donot know how to stop the fan)9. Plug the AC adapter and external battery back and press the power button10. no beep, no fan running, no sound, no display.11. the output voltage of the AC adapter is 20.6VDC. the voltage of the coil-battery is 3.06VDC. both are good per the manual. I guess something going wrong on the main board, maybe the BIOS, the CPU... Any reply from you is very appreciate.

Repeat the above step, but leave the CMOS battery disconnected for at least 20 mins...

You will need RAM to boot, if you have two RAM modules installed try booting with only one, alternating the RAM slots.

If it still doesn't work, also disconnect the wlan and wwan cards, the touchpad and try again with one RAM at a time.

Let us know how it goes...

Recently i replaced the mobo in my T440p machine. Because i wasnt sure it was working i checked it right after i connected to screen.I got a a picture however i didnt let it resume much more just the ThinkPad logo. I reassembled it totally while checking after each connected cable whether it was still working. It was. Right after finish i wanted to switch it on but i got some beeps (dont remember the pattern) then no screen at all, just the power button is blinking showing the AC power connection. Nothing happens with just battery  or battery + AC power.I disassembled it and reconnected what i could but didnt help.Since then there isnt any beeping at AC adapter connection just the power button is blinking 3 times then repeat. So the situation is that i have now a disassembled laptop again because i try to find out some solution. Anybody any idea? Is that possible that it switches on just in case of being fully assembled?

Hello and welcome,

Your laptop actually sleeps?  It's not just the screen blanking?

And please explain what you mean by "the whole advanced display settings thing".  It's impossible to know what you've already tried from that description.  Do you mean you've set the AC and battery screen refresh rates to be the same?  That is what usually fixes what you describe - if it's just screen blanking.

The tips I got with this Kensington 33197 power adapter have numbers stenciled on them like N3, N5, N19, etc. The tips sold on their web site make no mention of the "N" numbers and have numbers like K20059, K20050, etc. and there is no cross reference.

You can also see a complete reference for "N" numbers to all the laptops they support at the above link. Again, no mention of the numbers Kensington uses on their site.

I need a cross reference for these kinds of numbers.

Kensington referred me to their telephone tech support; but, there is a language or cultural barrier that prevents their understanding what I need.

Does anyone know of such a reference?

Hi there,

We've got 3 Dell precision towers 5810 that work great, except for a possible bios bug, which I can reproduce on all machines:

I'm using the installed NIC: Intel ethernet server adapter i210-t1.
Our computers go powerless every night (mains power) after a normal pc shutdown. Every morning, when the power is back on, I want to wake up all computers in our building with Wake On Lan (WOL) by sending a 'magic packet' over the network.
This normally works well if the machine has been switched on and off with the power button / windows shutdown. But when I unplug the machine (mains power), wait and plug in the mains power again, the computer does not respond to the WOL packet. (Maybe the PCI-E NIC does not get power on plugging in the mains of machine for the first time).
It works well on the integrated (motherboard) NIC. BIOS / power / sleep state settings seem to be ok.

Hopefully someone here can help solve my issue, because I'm practically at my wit's end with it. I recently ran Lenovo's Updater program and it installed a few new things on my Laptop... I don't remember all of them, but I know one was a BIOS update, a Firmware update (can't remember specifically for what though), as well as a few programs I was missing on my computer (like Lenovo Power Management, just to name one).  It's something I hadn't ran for a good year, so I'm sure everything was using an older version! In any case, it seems after I did that, many of the games on my computer started playing worse.  Long story short, after checking out a few programs to monitor what my computer's doing (CPU-Z, and even Intel's Extreme Tuning Utility), I noticed that my Laptop's suddenly only using a portion of what it can do. For example, the core speed should be able to go up to 2.6ghz - 3.3ghz... but strangely, it's staying at a solid 1.20ghz the whole time. No matter if I run any graphic-intensive games or do anything else that might need some extra power, it stays exactly at that number. Here's the weird thing though.  If I unplug my Laptop and let it run off the battery?  It shoots straight up to the 2.6ghz-3.3ghz, as it's supposed to.  As soon as I plug it in again, it drops right back down to 1.20ghz and many of my games run like crap again. I've tried looking up solutions online, but I've found nothing that helps. I've tri... Read more

My AC adapter is not powering my laptop any longer. At first I thought it was the adapter itself, so I bought a new, OEM, 230W one. Same issue.  Computer charges when off but doesn't charge when working, and won't even turn on (no lights) when battery is out and AC adapter is plugged in. This is a common problem (I see lots of posts)
The problem source is the [Dell] AC adapter.  PA-21 Family, 65W, P/N: NX061.  It is made in China.
I have an XPS M1330.  Using Dell after warranty service, replaced the Mother Board twice, replaced the battery twice, replaced the AC adapter twice - not fixing it.
Turns out the power warning message is very informative.  It states "Please connect a Dell 65W AC adapter or greater for best system performance".  So, I plugged in my Dell 95W adapter - WOW Problem Solved.
A lab test of my new Dell 65W AC adapter shows it to be 64.6 watts.  If this unit gets hot (like after several hours of use), it may not put out the full 65 watts - the system may not recognize the adapter, it may power the system ok, but won't charge the battery.
These units burn out after only a few months of use. Their cables are too fragile. If Dell's or their supplier's Quality Control can't produce a reliable 65W product - I found seveal "Made In USA" universal adapters.

A:AC Adapter - Alert - "AC power adapter wattage and type cannot be determined"

Well my solution was simple.
I just removed the battery pack and powered up my notebook. Then I turned off the notebook replaced the battery pack and VOILA. The error message was gone.

For the last two weeks, every time I start my Dell INSPIRON E1705 while using the power supply I am greeted with the following message. "The AC power adapter type cannot be determined. Your system will operate slower and the battery will not charge. Please connect a Dell 90W AC adapter or higher for best system operation". I press the F1 Key and everything works fine. I've read about this on other websites and most say it's a design flaw in the power supply after the cord has been properly wound around the supply as designed. Apparently a few of the cords internal wire strands become broken and cause this message. My computer is from June 2006 and shouldn't be having this issue so early...or ever. This seems like a flaw that should have created some type of manufacturers recall since so many people are having this issue. I'm of course out of warranty, will Dell replace this free of charge?

`

A:Power Supply - "The AC power adapter type cannot be determined....."

You are correct, the failure is due toloss of the power supply ID signal. Sometimes this happens because of strain on the plug, which breaks the signal wire. Some even are so severe that the insulation breaks away from the plug; this is due to rough handling. The other cause is one or more of the power socket solder connections to the system board become broken. This also is related to severe handling. I have seen one case where all three power connections and three of four mechanical connections were disconnected. If the power supply is bad, a replacement will cure the problem. If not, then the socket is bad, and this will require a system board replacement. If you are experienced, you can try to resolder the connections. I am experienced and was not able to get my daughter's E6000 to work by resoldered. More recent Dells are using a replacable power connection board which is a much cheaper repair.

I recently bought a replacement power adapter for my dell e1505. The computer works but it won't charge the battery and tells me that since the computer does not recognize the charger, I need to reseat the power adapter... What does that mean?

A:Power Adapter

Hello aaronbaron,

Reseat the power adapter just means make sure the power adapter is plugged in good on the laptop and the wall outlet. I would try powering off the laptop, unplug the power cord, take the new battery out. Reinstall the new battery only and try to power on the computer. If that does not work plug in the power cord and power up with the new battery installed.

Hi SUSMI,

When you plug in the adapter to the system, does the adapter stay firm or does it fall off easily? Is the adapter frayed? Could you test with another power adapter if possible?
Restart the system and press f2 key to enter BIOS - check the adapter status in BIOS with and without the adapter plugged in. Also, wiggle the adapter cable at the end and see if the status changes in BIOS at any point.
Restart the system and press f12 key on startup - choose diagnostics. Let it run the diags and if you encounter any errors - make a note of the complete error and report the same to us.These are onboard diagnostics and they might possible pick some error if the hardware is not functional.

Radio Shack would be a good place to start although you might have to get one of their adjustable models. A Google search should also turn up something. Actually I just replaced my D-Link powered USB1 hub with a USB2 model. The old one is just sitting around and it has a 5V 2.4A adapter. If you want it so you can use the adapter just PM me and I'll send it to you.

Hi JASON55,
What is the exact system model? Are you using an original Dell OEM Adapter? When you plug in the adapter to the system, does the adapter stay firm or does it fall off easily? Is the adapter frayed? Is there any damage on the system? Could you test with another power adapter if possible?
Restart the system and press f2 key to enter BIOS - check the adapter status in BIOS with and without the adapter plugged in. Also, wiggle the adapter cable at the end and see if the status changes in BIOS at any point. Check the battery health in BIOS (if applicable).
Restart the system and press f12 key on startup - choose diagnostics. Let it run the diags and if you encounter any errors - make a note of the complete error and report the same to us. These are onboard diagnostics and they might possible pick some error if the hardware is not functional.
If another adapter works fine, then replace the adapter. If not, first replace the dc port and if it does not resolve the issue, then I would suspect a motherboard failure.

I have a Inspiron 15 3541 touch screen and "misplaced" my power cord and adapter. I'm using a Dell adapter from a different computer, but when I turned on my laptop, I get a message requiring a system or admin password even before it boots up. Is this because of the different adapter? How many pins did my adapter have? What problems does a different adapter create?

A:Power adapter pins

The password that is showing up before your computer boots sounds like there is a BIOS password set on the computer.  Unfortunately if you don't remember that password then you are probably stuck.  You can probably go online and search and see if there is a way to reset BIOS on the laptop and get it to default and remove the password that is set on it.  If there is a hard drive password though then the only way to remove that if you forgot it is to install a new hard drive as the password will follow the drive, not the computer.
Your power supply should have only 1 pin.  Dell used the same adapter for their computers for a while, they come in different wattage though and if you use an adapter that is too low then it may not be able to charge the battery while you use it or at all.  If the plug fits and it is a Dell charger you should be okay to at least get the computer up and running.  If it is a low wattage charger and the setting is set in BIOS (usually is by default) you'll get a message from your computer telling you that the charger isn't powerful enough to charge the battery while in use.

I had the power cord replaced last year. But now I find the power box cord is not working. My battery died completely and even with the power cord plugged in, my laptop will not work. The box, even after replacing the power cord, still got extremely hot. Now I can't use my laptop at all! What do I do andhow much is it going to cost? Why is this not on a recall?

A:Power adapter for HP Pavillion g7

I recently purchased a Del Latitude 7202 Toughbook.
At same time purchased 12V power adapter.
The adapter was shipped separately.  SKU 469-4546.  The power plug did not fit computer.
It is too fat.  Spent 4 hours with tech support and they told me the wrong part was shipped.
They said they would send a replacement.  10 days later I get a package with an HDMI cable in it.
Call support back, was told they would just issue me a credit and I can purchase one online.
I was told I needed part.  450-AAYR.  Web page for that part lists the 7202 as compatible.
It arrived yesterday.  Still doesn't fit.  I am returning it as well.
What is required to get the correct part?
