Windows Explorer showing incorrect values for sizes of files and folders.

Q: Windows Explorer showing incorrect values for sizes of files and folders.

I'm having a very bizarre issue on a laptop running Windows 7. Windows explorer is showing all items as the wrong size, it's as if the math is off by a few 0s. For example an outlook file is showing up a 548 GB which clearly isn't possible. I looked up the
file on another computer and it was actually 5.48 GB. Every file on the computer shows up that way. It also doesn't matter if I'm looking at a file on the local drive or on a mapped drive, it still shows the incorrect value. I've never run into something like
this before and haven't had much luck finding anything on Google either. Has anyone seen something like this before or have an idea for how to change the math behind explorer? If that is even what needs to be changed.

As an extra note, kind of funny but even the transfer rate is buggered up, the laptop is transferring files from a mapped drive at a miraculous 522 MB/s, sure do wish my computer could move that fast.

Preferred Solution: Windows Explorer showing incorrect values for sizes of files and folders.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

The subject sounds really newbie since I know you can either hover over a folder in Explorer or right click, click properties and get the folder size - but what I want is a fix or utility that allows me to see multiple folders, ala Explorer, and see their size displayed - the way it does for individual files on the DETAILS setting.

I downloaded Explorer Plus but have not seen a way to make it do this.

Please advise and thank you in advance.

A:How Can I get Explorer to Show Folder Sizes for Multiple Folders?

Truth be told, I've never used or even SEEN a program that would do this, though I'm sure there must be at least ONE available.

In the meantime, you can open Windows Explorer and RIGHT-click a folder, then choose "Properties", and it will tell you what you need to know; how many files in the folder, how many FOLDERS in the folder, how much room they occupy on the HDD, and so on.

Hello again

unfortunately the issue i going to ask help with is the total same issue that i had last year

Icons sizes change back to details sizes on specific folder

may also be relate to the issue that this user had

Shortcut icons re-sizing randomly

My OS had gone crazy and change icon's sizes back to details sizes in random folders, last time i had that issue i thought it was solved by this method

Icons sizes change back to details sizes on specific folder

But unfortunately it only was temporary, i had to format anyway so the problem was solved after the format and never appeared again till 3 days ago.

it not seem to be a virus but it really annoy, the only thing i done 3 days ago that was extraordinary for me was to edit some video on windows live movie maker + cccp codecs, i rarely use WLMM but happened to use it 3 days ago, and after that the issue reappear, i can't use system restore since i done alot of stuff on my pc and don't want to lose them, and also i don't happened to made restore point before the day the issue occurred and the rest are deleted..so SR is not a option.

anyone know what i can do now?

thanks in advance

A:Icon's sizes randomly change back to details sizes in random folders

No guarantees these suggestions will work but you could give it a try. See if rebuilding the icon cache helps.

Icon Cache - Rebuild

You could also try running a system file checker scan from an elevated command prompt (option two) just in case your system fils got damaged or corrupted somehow. If problems are found, run the scan 3 times rebooting in between each scan.

I was testing my FTP server tonight and when I connect to the home directory there's two folders that show up (RECYCLER and System Volume Information) in the home directory that shouldn't be there. When I go into my home directory in Windows Explorer these folders don't show up there, even if I choose to show the hidden files. If I can't get these folders to show up in Windows Explorer I can't exclude them from showing up in my FTP Server software. Is it possible that they show up in my FTP client because I'm connecting to the same machine the server is on? That's all I can come up with. What's going on here and how do I fix it?

Hi Everyone,

I am using Windows 7 (x64) and I am getting incorrect disk usage reporting through Explorer. I am looking at a 1TB disk, which with partitioning considered is showing as a 931GB disk - however even though I am using only 421GB of the disk space Windows 7 (Explorer) is showing that there is only 202GB free on the disk!

As you can see above I selected all of the files on the disk, right clicked, selected Properties, and the results of my enquiry are shown (superimposed over the Explorer view).

If anybody has any suggestions on how to correct this issue they will be greatly appreciated.

Hey there! (Noob to the forums, wasn't sure where to post to begin with. Sorry if it's the wrong subject thread!)

Basically... when I go to "Choose file" anywhere online, whether it be a file or uploading a picture; my folders and C: disk.. pretty much everything on the left side of the Windows Explorer doesn't show up.

I ran a virus scan not just three days ago? Nothing showed up. Re-running another one... and nothing has yet to show up.

The problem is in the purple rectangle in the attachment. (Did the same exact thing when I was uploading this picture).

Not sure where to create a bug report or to get confirmation that this is a bug so I thought I'd start here.
I've noticed that the values in Perfmon for Process::Virtual Bytes are radically different for a number of processes when running on Windows 10 / Server 2012 than, say, Windows 7.
As an example I'm tracking Virtual Bytes the process Services for both operating systems, and Windows 10 (and Server 2012) is reporting 2,199,069,044,736.000, and Windows 7 is reporting 50,900,992.000. Obviously the machines are processing different
loads but the difference in magnitude of 100,000 seems a little extreme.
I also see the same issue with the processes svchost, WmiPrvSE, Isass, MicrosoftEdgeCP, explorer, MsMpEng, MicrosoftEdge, dwm, csrss, Taskmgr, RuntimeBroker where they're all showing a value of greater than 2,000,000,000,000.
I don't see it, oddly enough, with java, firefox, or system.

This just started happening a week or two ago and it's a real pain!

If I put a DVD or CD into the corresponding drive on my computer and use Windows Explorer to display the contents, it does so just fine, as it's supposed to.

BUT, if I take that disc out and put another one in to look at its contents, the contents of the PREVIOUS disc will still be displayed! I've bailed out of Explorer, re-opened it, and tried again, but no luck-it will still show the contents of the previous disc.

What's the deal here? Is there a simple fix or is it time to find a tall building and a good time at which to push the machine off the top?

I don't know what happened. I recently tried to download and install Windows 7 SP 1.
I opened Windows Explorer and every file there is .pdb. The other drivers on the computer are all fine. The computer works fine I just can not see any of the default folders in the tree for C drive. This is the boot drive.
I would be most grateful if someone could tell me how to get the Windows Explorer back to normal. I have tried and tried to reset it. I remains the same.
thank you
I can not even show a screen shot because I can find only these .pdb files. There are no files I recognize

A:Windows Explorer, All files and Folders are .pdb now

Well, PDB files are debug files, so maybe this could be something to do with a version of Visual Studio or something? + never say a screen shot wont help, the mods here can do a lot more with a screen shot.

Good Evening!

About 1 month ago, we had a program virus which made a home in our computer. I have been running Kaspersky Internet Security for years and love it. This is the first time that even Kas couldn't kill this virus.

Anyways, about 1 week ago, it quit popping up and Kas was giving me a clean scan. HOWEVER.....since then, I can't open Windows Explorer or my folders which are on my desktop. Internet Explorer, my e-mail, etc. open up just fine. But not my folders. (photos, documents, etc.)

I also use Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware and Tune-up Utilities 2009.

Can any of you please direct me to the proper forum? On certain folders, right-clicking and displaying the properties shows me an increasing folder size and an incorrect number of files and folders contained therein.

A:Folder sizes and contents are incorrect

No. It is not. Size is seen being incremented because Windows reads and calculates the total number of files and folders and their sizes while you pop the properties box open.

This number and size includes all hidden files and system protected hidden files which can't be seen inside a folder unless viewing of those files is enabled. These special hidden files and folders account for the extra figure that you see.

Hi, I've search around the forum and the net and couldn't find a solution yet so I'd like to post the problem here.

Basically, some (not all) of my folders and files and gone in windows explorer. I'm using xp, and I've try everything to get the folders and files appear: hidden files, changing properties, deleted the regedit entry as mircosoft suggested...nothing helps. The thing is, I can access my folders and files still so I KNOW they're there (programs are usable, full address in address bar can access the folders), it just didn't show up in the explorer. I'm out of ideas here other than try to reinstall xp (I have a xp disk), but I'd like to ask for suggestion here first. Thanks.

Hi all! I recently installed Win8 and have noticed that at some point the tags stopped displaying in Windows Explorer for media files such as mp3 and m4b.

This affects my collection of Music and Audio books that I had to perform a big resue operation on.
I can't sort them according to the tags that had been set in iTunes or mp3 tagger. This has always worked previously and the tags have displayed fine.

It's just empty where the tag should be, even for files which I know are tagged, and where the tag displayed previously, in Windows Explorer.

I am running sfc /scannow for good measure, but is this a known Windows 8 problem, perhaps? Anyone come across it and know any tips for getting the tags to display again? I don't fancy doing this sorting on a file-by-file basis, it would take a week....

Hope someone can help !

First, It's my honor to be with you in this forum. This is my first thread !

I'm really tired and angry with a very annoying error of windows explorer.
windows explorer is getting crashed while opening any folders accidentally, especially folders with large number of files and images. first it appears as windows explorer is unable to load files thumbnails (any kind of files) and appears as white or blank icons regardless the type of file. then when opening my computer in another window , it couldn't load even contents of drivers and hangs as "searching for items".
all this happens suddenly after weeks of normal windows usage. I resolve it by backing up system using Acronis image. but the problem persists. I tried virus scan with no success using AVG. I made thorough scan for C with no result too.
Note that this problem I found with Windows 7 and it forced me to upgrade to Windows 8 then I'm experiencing the same problem now. I don't Understand why.

Note: I think there's no hardware (HDD) error cause I'm running Ubuntu 13.04 alongside Windows and it's browsing files perfectly.

Please help quickly

A:Windows Explorer stops showing files or no file thumbnail

Try doing a CHKDSK on the drive that has Windows on it, also when was the last time you optimised the drive? Scan it and see if it finds any problems. It's best to do it from an install disk and go into Command Prompt and run CHKDSK from there, that way you can see the results as it works on the drive.

I am experiencing some whacky behavior on my Windows 7 profile. It has been acting up lately doing strange things and I know if I "just create another profile" things will be ok, but I am a hardcore computer user and I am pretty picky about my layout, quicklaunch icons, program profiles/settings, etc so switching to a new profile would take me hours or painful configuration.

Here is what is currently happening...
When I create a new folder anywhere on the hard drive, it doesn't show up until I hit F5 to refresh the folder. If I rename a folder/file it doesn't show up until I hit F5. Basically any creation, modification, or deletion of file/folders on the drive are not showing up until I refresh the folder.

I work in IT, and one of my end users has an issue where she has a number of files and folders in the desktop folder of her user directory, but only about 1/2 to 2/3 of them are actually showing up on her desktop. I have ruled out the following:
- I have set the desktop to auto-arrange to see if there were any items off the screen.
- The number of items that are showing doesn't even fill the desktop, so there aren't any items off the screen.
- I have verified that the "Show desktop items" option is selected.
- I have verified that none of the items are marked as hidden.
- This is a brand new machine with a fresh image, so there are no viruses on it.
- I have also tried rebooting, with no luck.

Ok, this question has been asked around many corners of the Internet and these forums and I haven't found a "real" answer so I'm asking it again and hopefully seeking a final resolution to the problem.

When "Protected Mode" is turned On, users are unable to view some folders in the file upload dialog that they can normally view (e.g. under Documents, Pictures, etc.).When viewing the same folders in Explorer running as the same user as the Internet Explorer instance, the missing folders are viewable.Launching Internet Explorer "as an administrator" allows the user to view the missing folders (but this is not recommended due to security concerns).
So far, the workaround that I found was to either run some crazy tool from BleepingComputer called Unhide that resets everything on your system -- this is the sledge hammer-to-thumbtack approach.  Another one was to go into Organize > Folder and
search options > View and uncheck the hide options and select the show radio option.  The last one was to search for the folder in the file upload dialog, right-click the folder, and uncheck Hidden.
None of these, IMHO, are valid solutions to the real problem which is that something is special about this folder that is causing IE in Protected Mode to treat the file as Hidden.
The last "workaround" seems to indicate that the "hidden" file attribute is set for the file, but this doesn't app... Read more

Hi, I've had this Western Digital 1 TB External Hard drive since mid 2010 and have had no issues till now.

It has 700-800 gb of stuff, basically all my stuff on it. Earlier I was setting up a lan game so I plugged my external into a friends brothers laptop to copy the game across. It all worked fine and ran smoothly up until I left. (he has a bad history of viruses )

When I restarted my laptop and plugged in the external hard drive microsoft security essentials detected the virus "dorkbot!ink" and I let it be removed. I then went to access the wd external and when clicked on it opened and there were no files or folders apart from a folder called "RECYCLER" and a file called "Datainfo.cfg". At this point I assumed that the virus had deleted all my files on the hard drive with the "Recycler" and was "fake" showing my hd was full with "Datainfo.cfg".

The only reason I'm not sure is because when I deleted the "RECYCLER" folder and "Datainfo.cfg" (I shouldn't have deleted these ) the hard drive still seemed to have the data on it (It showed full in My Computer). Also when I was playing itunes I can still play songs that were on the external hd which wouldn't work if the directory was gone would it?.

I'm not sure how to access it all again if it's possible, what should I do now?
I'd appreciate any help or tips people could give me.

A:WD external not showing any files or folders, Sure it has stuff on it

OK. Try this.

Download the executable portable version of Re-Enable II from Downloads

Run it. In the program GUI click on Tools> Scan and delete Autorun.inf.

This will scan all all the drives and show all the Autorun.inf files.

Select only the Autorun.inf files on your external drive recognised by its drive letter (say G: ) and click on "Delete Selected"

In the second step though there is a "Reset folder/files attributes" in the Tools menu as a matter of abundant caution, I would prefer to do it manually by the attribute command.

Start > Run > type cmd and click on OK.
If your external drive is G:
Enter this command: attrib -h -r -s /s /d g:*.* (Press ENTER)
Check to see whether all your folders and files are accessible.

Hello Guys,

when I used to go to "recent places" from the favourites menu from file explorer it used to give me a list of the most recently opened files, now it gives me the folder of the file opened instead of the file. I recently upgraded to Win 8.1 from 8 so it might be a change made there.

e.g if I open a file called text.txt in c:/Spare folder in recent places it used to add text.txt, it now shows the spare folder instead!

Could someone please have a look at there recent places to see if it's the same.

When I click on browse to search for a file to open in some software that I am using the only thing that will show is folders. I can't get the browse for folders and files to show files.

In other words I click on (c:) then Program Files and only folders will show. I cannot get the files to show under Program Files. I need to be able to select a file in that folder. They will show up when I do the same using Windows Explorer.

What am I doing wrong?

Which program is this in?

If you are seeing a message that says "No files match your search" it's because the program you are using doesn't know how to open any of the files in that folder...

I use Windows XP. There is not a lot in the Recycle Bin - some goes back to last year. Some recent deletes are there. I deleted a large number of music files (mp3) and folders and only 3 of these files are in the recycle bin. The Recycle Bin settings are global and do not allow for auto delete. The disk space available is large.

History: My computer had been in storage for 16 mos and I have recently been updating everything. Prior to putting it in storage I had to have it professionally restored - they suspected it was a virus. The hardware was affected and as I continued to have odd things happen I added a portable hard drive and changed settings so that My Documents and all subfolders operated from this drive. That is the only drive on which I can find the recycle bin. On the C drive I found something called Recycler.

I am good at emptying my recycle bin, but in the process of doing updates and going through old files and programs I have intentionally not emptied it as I anticipated the chance for mistakes would be greater. I was right, unfortunately, little of what I have deleted is in the bin. Don't know why old stuff is there and so little of recently deleted files/folders can be found.

Something is causing all My Documents files and folders to show up on my Desktop (along with what is normally there).
They are not shortcuts.
Properties show that they are actually located in My Desktop folder, but in My Documents, where they belong.

How I got to this state:
When I originally installed Win8Pro, I used sysprep to move Users to D drive, at OOBE.
I tried to reverse this, so I could upgrade to 8.1, but sysprep fails to get me to audit mode.
So I booted into Safe Mode with a new temp admin acct, and copied users back to C drive.
Then I used regedit to point all the profiles back to C drive.
Rebooted. Logged into my main account.
I then used Properties on all my Profile movable folders to move that content back to D.
All well and good until my Desktop fills up with files and folders, that aren't really supposed to display there.
They work the same and point to the same files if I access them normally through my account icon.

I've been looking for copy errors, haven't found anything yet.
Any ideas?

A:All My Documents files and folders showing on my Desktop

OOBE is the MS Activator, it should be in the Windows/System32 folder. Was there an OOBE folder on the D drive?

I'll have to read up on Sysprep.

But, you copied your USERS folders right over the new Users folder right? All I can say about that, is that you should not have moved certain files that are in the root Users folder, like the DAT files.

I'll have to look up a old post to confirm that.

Ok, here is what I found:

System loads "Temporary Profile"

My system was loading a Temporary Profile. I had to make a new account and move all of my USER files to a new user account.

You CANNOT copy the NTUSER.DAT files, but you can copy every single other file and folder.

The NTUSER.DAT file that was in there, probably fouled up the copy and shunted all of the Docs into the Desktop Folder.

Current Win 7 version: 6.1 (Build 7601: Service Pack 1). Right after I installed Win 7 Pro, I disabled automatic updates.

I deleted folders and files directly from the C drive. I even went to Backup and Restore>Manage Space>View Backups and deleted all existing backups. Also did deleted the backup folder and MediaID.bin file from the backup drive.

No matter what, when I do a new backup, the backup keeps showing folders and files that I DEFINITELY deleted from the C drive, it shows them when I browse the backup for files. What am I missing here? I Googled and was unable to find anything. Do I need a specific Win update? If so, what is the patch?

Thanks ahead of time, this is driving me nuts.

I want to see the size of folders without having to open properties/details as I want to compare multiple folders simultaneously.

Can you either suggest a utility to show folder sizes within Windows Explorer itself (which is preferable) or stand-alone application which will allow me to see the folders taking up the most space please?

Thank you,

A:How can folder sizes be shown in Windows Explorer?

Hi, vista seven left this out to save processing power there is a lot to show, folder options will help go to "View" and check "Display file size information in folder tips" If you want to show files in a folder of a certain size then you can use this cmd (cmd as admin) eg only:-

wmic path cim_datafile where "Path='\\windows\\system32\\' and FileSize>1000000" > 0 & notepad 0
press enter, will open in notepad a lot of useful info added scroll for file size , change "file size" size to suit and directory to suit.

I have a issue that is driving me crazy. when I upload a picture to flickr.com when I browse the folders for the pic I want to upload I can see folders and files that are not actually there. like they were moved or deleted but are showing up in the search. when I click on them of course it's empty.

I'm sure this is some kind of a thumbnails viewing issue or something that can be corrected. but I've tried cleaning up all the stuff I know about. like using the disk clean up tool and deleting all of the stuff in the %temp% folder etc.
I don't know what else to do.

how do I go about correcting this?

A:computer showing folders and files that no longer exist?

This is not something I normally recommend but try grabbing a copy of ccleaner.
CCleaner - Download
(it's free)
and use the temporary file cleaning only DO NOT use the registry cleaner part of the program.
IF you use firefox or chrome you'll want to click the app tabs first and check the boxes for those browsers.
I think as you apparently do that they are simply stuck in the file list. Ccleaner is the quickest way to get at that I know of.

I figured out my problem, it's due to a flaw in a backup script. Now I need to figure out what's wrong with that, but anyway. How do I delete this post? I tried it through edit and it won't let me.

If I open Settings in Windows 10, then go to System > Storage, I get the following usage for C:
161Gb used of 285Gb
whereas File Explorer gives the more sensible 21Gb used of 145Gb, which is almost certainly the correct values, given that it is a 145Gb partition, and is a fresh install of Windows 10. The C: partition is on a 480Gb SSD drive.

Here is a screenshot of disk management showing the correct values

And here is a screenshot of the Storage screen with the incorrect values

Can anyone explain why this is?

A:Incorrect disk usage values displayed in Settings > System > Storage

The C: drive partition is correctly identified as 145.70GB, however if you add up the rest of the partitions without drive letters (ie) 139.70GB + the hidden 350MB and 450MB partitions, you get 285GB not including the 160GB of Unallocated Space. Since the other partitions don't have drive letters, System/Storage is lumping those drives into the total capacity of C:.
