T470. T570, P51s Can I have OS in m2.2242 SSD

Q: T470. T570, P51s Can I have OS in m2.2242 SSD

Hello, I am planning to buy T470,570 or P51s (not decided) with 500GB HDD. Can I buy a 2242 m.2 SSD from another vendor and have the Windows installed in that SSD and simultaneously use the HDD. I assume this wouldn't need any extra adapter. Read threads saying BIOS upgrade killed the m.2 2242 SSD and that made me skeptical about this. Please advice.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I finally got my m.2 cable and tray to swap out my 2.5 to an m.2.  I installed and can see the 960 pro in the BIOS fine.  However it seems the 2242 SSD has disappeared.  Does this laptop not supporting having both populated? (It worked fine with a SATA 2.5)

Just received a new T470 and installed a 256GB M.2 2242 HD. However, the computer is not recognizing the HD.  I saw another thread mentioning that Bios version 1.30 gave some issues, but checking my system, I have 1.28. Do I need to upgrade to 1.29? Or is there something else I need to do? Thanks!

Hi,I have a new T470 sitting here. I'd like to use a 2242 SSD (128 or 256GB) in the WWAN slot to run my system off, and also - as a separate data drive - use a 2.5" SSD that I have in my current work laptop .Are there any official recommendations, or a positive experiences as to which 2242 drives are compatible with the T470? I know there have been issues with the T450 and 460, so I'm reluctant to just buy one to realize it doesn't work. Thanks,Michael

Hello,my Lancom VPN-Client doesn't work with mobile web on the newer series of Lenovo notebooks. The client connect correctly with the network of the company, but it doesn't work and after some time the internetconnection drops. It's only with mobile web, with wifi the VPN connection works.I tried a working VPN-profile and sim card - doesn't work. But when i try the sim-card and the VPN-profile on an older notebook (T520) it works. Therefore i can say, there is a problem with the notebooks or to be precise with the LTE-modules.Has anyone ideas or the same problem? Thanks

Does the Thinkpad P51s support the Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock? I have the Thinkpad P51s with stock Windows 10 Pro and updated to latest drivers and Windows version and installed the latest Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock drivers. Attaching the Thunderbolt 3 Dock to the P51s as described in documentation, it charges the notebook, however, noting attached to the dock is recognized. I've tested with attaching USB flash drives, headphones, Ethernet, HDMI, and DP, but nothing is recognized nor are any warnings/errors displayed in Windows. While the Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock is listed as being compatible with the P51s and T570, the notebook order page does not list the Thunderbolt 3 Dock in any of the accessories lists. Lenovo Sales also confirmed that the Thunderbolt 3 Dock is fully compatible with the P51s.  However, I needed to purchase the Thunderbolt 3 Dock separately from the notebook order. What's going on? Has anybody successfully used the P51s or the T570 with the Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock? Or is this something I need to wait for full support via a future BIOS/driver update? Or perhaps my Thunderbolt 3 Dock is defective? Thanks,Boris

I don't have one to try, but there is a slot for a WWAN card or a 2242 M.2 SSD that is easy to access.  Remove the big cover and it is visible.  If you lay the machine down with the memory slots and the HDD toward you, it is above the HDD, to the left of the CPU.  The other thinkpads of that generation (T440, T540, W540) will all boot fine from the drive.

Hi. I've just received my T460s and a Transcend 2242 512GB SSD card, but unfortunatelly this ThinkPad doesn't detect the SSD at all. I'm disappointed because I was sure I read somewhere that it was technically possible to do that on the WWAN M2 slot, but now there are other reports telling it's not working. My question is: is this a hardware limitation or is it possible that a BIOS update can enable SSD support on the 2242 slot? This would be ideal to me so that I can have Windows 10 and Linux with dual boot, without sacrificing storage. Thank you.

It also occurs after signing without even ever running an application. During the freezing period the mouse no longer responds nor does the keyboard. I ran a full diognostics test and no errors in the hardware were found. Any suggestions on how to fix this or what I should do? I have also attached the specs of my laptop.

Hello! I am looking into purchasing a workstation to use for the next three years of architecture graduate school as well as to take into the early years of my career after I graduate. I am deciding between the P51s (7600u, 16x2 @2133 ram, Quadro M520) and the P51 (7700HQ, 16x2 @2400 ram, Quadro M1200). I am of course trying to make my decision based on minimizing cost but still having enough power in the machine to handle CAD and renders. Basically, I want a durable and at least middle-of-the-road performer but want to minimize cost if possible.  I am hoping that the fine folk of this forum can answer a few questions for me:As far as processors go what is the difference between the 7600u and the 7700HQ when it comes to my work in Rhino and a rendering engine? The P51s and P51 have ram that operate at different speeds. Is there a great deal of productivity lost at 2133 instead of 2400?Do I even need 32gb ram or will 16 suffice?Would it be possible to down the line upgrade the GPU in the P51s (since it is the weak Quadro M520)? If possible what would a be a good option? Is there a great deal of difference in a 1TB Opal2.0 and a RAID 0 1TB @5400 + 256GB SSD in terms of durability and speed?Thank you!

One of the reasons I ended up choosing the P51s over other comperable laptops was its unparalleled expandability in a portable, quite thin package. I can't think of any other laptops, outside of the T470s, that are 15.6" or smaller, allow for more than one internal hard drive, and aren't meant to be teathered to a desk. I was informed by multiple Lenovo customer represenatives before I bought my laptop that the P51s not only had a 2.5" SATA bay, but also an open WWAN slot that could be used to house an m.2 SATA SSD. I just got around to buying an m.2 SATA SSD for the slot, but my laptop is rejecting it. It won't even boot unless I disable the WWAN slot (from the BIOS) entirely. What gives? I thought I could put an SSD in the slot--that was one of the reasons I bought the laptop!

I searched but couldn't find an answer. Apologies if I missed it. Recently bought a P51s, MTM 20JY-0009US, which came with Win 7 Pro downgrade from Win 10 factory installed. Made the Win 7 recovery USB stick, as well as downloaded the Lenovo Win 10 recovery image for later use. In the last few days, I bought a refurbished P50, MTM 20EN-X003US, from the Lenovo outlet with Win 10 Pro installed. I would like to put Win 7 on it, which I am told I may through Win 10 downgrade rights. I have an OEM Win 7 license & disk I could use but I wonder if I can use the recovery stick from the P51s. The machines' respective specs seem very similar (same type/speed of RAM, i7-6xxx processors, etc.) but will it actually work? Appreciate any thoughts. Thanks!

Just received my P51s, and got it set up the day before yesterday. Great machine, everything seemed to be running wonderfully. Last night, Windows 10 did a fairly major update: "Cumulative update for Windows 10 Version 1703". After the update, I've been getting a really high frequency of Blue Screens of Death, one every few hours at least. I've had between four and five so far today. Based on anyone else's experience, is this related to the Windows 10 update, or is there a chance that there's a hardware issue with my new machine? Any advice on solutions?

I recently bought a P51s from Lenovo. I make a 500 Gb partition on my PC in order to in install ubuntu alongside Windows. Ubuntu works pretty well but once I wanted to boot with windows, it asked me for a security number I did not have. It eventually gave me an option to reinstall windows without any installation disc. Since I have a week or so with the computer I do not have anything yet so I was not afraid of losing any file. The reinstall process finished and I was prompted with the cortana setup but once I get to "Do you want to save your files with onedrive?" regardless of the option I choose, the process freezes. I can go back to other options but I can't continue further. It would be very valuable if anyone had this issue and knows how to solve it. The other option I see is to download the installation image from WIndows and then make a fresh install in the partition but I am afraid about the pre installed drivers for the P51s. I have a fingerprint reader and an IR camera that I am concerned will now work with a general installation image from the windows site. Does anyone knows if Lenovo can provide those drivers or if the general image will automatically detect those peripherals and download the drivers?

Hi, I am using a P51s for 2 months now but I couldn't solve a video issue which is present since the first day I got it. I am not able to play 4K videos, they are usually stuck at the first frame or showing it at low fps. Most of the time, I am using the PC with an external UHD monitor (expanded destktop) and the issue gets even worse when I connect the external monitor. For example, a [email protected] video that I am able to play at 15-20 fps goes down to 3-5 fps rate when the second monitor is plugged. I tried using both HDMI and Thunderbolt3 (USB-C) interfaces. I am using Fraps app to measure the fps rate, and tried Windows Media Player, VLC, BS Player. I saw that some people had issues due to power plan settings but it's not the case for me, I see the problem even the AC is plugged in and all power plan settings are set to maximum performance.   I usually use the PC for desktop applications like browser and office apps. But I also notice the poor video performance while using these applications: cells load slowly or shown as gray or black on Excell and page scroll is not smooth on Chrome. I have a CCTV video management software which supports Nvidia hardware acceleration but I observed better performance on my previous X230 compared to my new P51s and I am not able to use it at all with this performance. I watched some reviews of P51s before purchasing and they were able to play 4K video without any hichups. So I thought that the issue... Read more

I know the new P models haven't release yet, but... I have a W520 - 16GB, 512GB SSD, nvidia quadro 1000m, i7-2860QM @ 2.5GHz. I want to move to a thinner, lighter computer that uses less wattage (I'm often on a boat running off of battery, and the 170W supply draws 15-18A @ 12v which is crazy). HOWEVER, I don't want to sacrifice performance. Chrome/General office apps + Photoshop, Illustrator and Premier. Do I pretty much need to go with a P51 to maintain the same or better level of performance? It's slightly thinner but bigger in LxW than the 520 and it uses the same power draw. My biggest concern is the i7-2860QM. It's a pretty good processor that the standard i7 used in the X1 carbon, yoga, etc. doesn't seem to compare to. Add in the discrete graphics (even though this is a quadro 1000)... I'm wondering if maybe the P51s will be comparable or better than the 520? Thinner, lower power, etc. Any thoughts on the new X1 Carbon vs. the W520? Lastly.. any thoughts on the screens on the new P51 and P51s vs the W520? My 520 is fully readable in direct sunlight. I've seen pro and con comments on the P series screens. I've heard the new ones will PROBABLY come with the same screens but with adjusted documented specifications that are closer to reality. Has anyone seen one of these screens in direct sunlight and also seen a W520 screen? When looking to spend $3k on a new laptop.. would like to be sure! Thanks!

I wanted to dual boot Win10 and Linux, so I started to resize the partition in the Linux installer and realized I couldn't. When I tried to resize with gparted, gparted said that the drive was encrypted. I have Windows 10 Home, so I didn't think it was bitlocker. I rebooted into Win10, and found "Device Encryption" and disabled it. Windows prompted that decryption could take a long time - but it didn't at all. I rebooted and was able to resize the partition in the Linux installer. I'm unable to figure out how to reenable encryption. If I set a HDD password in the BIOS, it just asks me for a password on boot, so that's not it. I can't encrypt with Win10 Home edition, so it wasn't done with that initially. I downloaded Samsung Magician, but it doesn't support the drive. I have a Samsung MZVLW1T0HMLH-000L7 drive which is a   1 TB SSD OPAL2.0 PCIe-NVMe. I've read that the OPAL drives are hardware encrypted, but I can't figure out how to turn it back on, or even for that matter, why I was able to disable it in Windows. Does anyone know how the drives are encrypted from the factory so I can get this encrypted again? Thanks!

I purchased a P51s with 4 GB of RAM in a single DIMM. I want to upgrade by adding a second DIMM. For best performance, do both DIMMs need to be the same size and speed? Or can I add a larger 8GB or 16GB DIMM in the second slot?
