win764 is a giant leap backwards

Q: win764 is a giant leap backwards

not responding....
win 3.1 aand xp could not handle it. vista could shut the program down.
win7 64. is worse than 3.1!
it ends up snarling the whole computer and has to be powered down with the power button.
have 2 computers - both toshiba laptops both win7 64. one connects to the internet, the other never has.
both have the same problem.
sometimes they get to the 'logging off' or 'shutting down' screen - but it sits there for hours just showing the words and doing nothing - going nowhere.
task manager is no use here either
other than buying an apple - is there a solution?

Preferred Solution: win764 is a giant leap backwards

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Yes there is. But first we need you system specs, and OS version to start.

Okay, right when I thought I know what I was doing when it comes to computers. I have has this set up for a few months then added more ram like 2 weeks ago.

OS: Win 7 Ultimate 64bit
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2
RAM: 5887 MB
GPU: ATI Radeion HD 3300, 384 MB
Just recently, maybe 3 days ago, Windows started acting up:
Flashing mouse cursor
Windows goes from Aero to Basic appearance
Slow and big applications freeze
Can't copy and paste

I have ran the windows disc memory check, nothing.

My GPU used to run the Aero fine, along with games like Arkahm City and Skyrim.

I figured it may be a virus(I have no anti-virus) and re-installed windows completely. But unfortunately the problem still exists. I can't figure out why. Maybe over heating? Maybe i have two types of ram in? I have 2x2GB corsair in the Orange slots and 2X1GB other brand in the green. Any help is appreciated.

Hello guys,
sorry for the inactivty, business is booming

Even though I've always said that I would never upgrade to Windows 8 I am thinking of it.

Well, to be honest - I don't know myself.
I am wondering whether or not Win7 64bit programs run on Win8.

I haven't really done the research but I fancy giving it a shot,
"Don't hate if you ain't tried it" springs to mind,
what's your guys opinions?

I really need another vivid Win7 users point of view on this one.

Hello I am new to this particular forum, up until today I have only toyed around with Windows 8 on a virtual machine but my old laptop died recently and it was out of its warranty period so I said screw it and bought a brand new laptop with Windows 8 pre-installed on it. So here are my concerns from what I have read about the system my own experience:
-a number of times I have had windows updates mess up my virtual machine and had to delete the VM and make a new one will this happen with my new laptop?
-I have heard that windows 8 does not play nice with steam and steam games will I have trouble because I do a lot of gaming on my laptop
-I use a Macrium reflect to make backup images of my PC will this work with Windows 8?

For a little better information on the new system I have ordered it is an Acer Aspire V3 771g-9809 it has 8Gb of ram an Nvidia Geforce 650m 2gb dedicated video card 1TB hard drive and a core i7 2.2ghz processor.

It's hard to say. Some have had problems with Win8 updates. But, I don't remember seeing the problem you mention.

One user I am aware of reports that he used this program successfully, but it took two tries for some reason. I have no info about Steam programs.

Hi Guys & Gals, thank's for the welcome posts last night as my intro in the forum.

As some may remember I was thinking of going from 32b Home Basic to 64b Win7.
Good advice was given of course.

Thinking about it, as a novice computer person, would I be better first upgrading slowly to Home Premium? At least it has a few more 'bells & whistles'. But is it enough of change?

If so where do I get it from, and is it easy to do? Don't forget i'm new at this! But want & willing to learn

Hope you can come up with something for me!

A:Is It-Too Big a Leap,32b HB to 64b Win7?

Being a new computer user, should not influence your decision to go from 32 to 64. Look at the features that both have and just decide the best for you. 64 is the wave of the future and if you think that you enjoy computers and the interest is not just short term, I think that I would go with Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. The cost will be about the same as Vista (if you can even find Vista HP anymore)
The big change, other than bells and whistles, going to 64 Seven HP, is more power and the additional features
Explore Windows 7 features - Microsoft Windows
Currently, you have memory that will not improve the performance either with Seven or Vista 64 bit.

Be sure that you buy the upgrade edition of 7. It is cheaper and we can show you how to install so it is just like the more expensive full retail DVD.

I've ordered the monitor (NEC EA232WMi) which is scheduled to arrive today & think I have selected a good case, MB, RAM, power supply & CPU. I thought I'd ask those with more experience for their commits as I've never built a PC before.

? Intel Core i5-2500K Sandy Bridge 3.3GHz
? Gigabyte GA-P67A-UD3-B3
? Corsair 8Gb (2x4Gb) 240-Pin DDR3 1600 Cas Latency:8
? Antec Sonata Elite Black Case
? Antec TruePower Supply TP-650 650W
The HDDs & Graphic card are carried over from the old PC. I don't know if I need overclock hardware but at least I could if I wanted to. As for RAM, I'm not sure what Cas Latency:8 means. I did want only 2 for now so I could expand to 16GB later if needed. Antec Sonata Elite case is said to be quieter than most cases.

Please post your thoughts; especially dos & don'ts.

A:Just looking before I leap...new PC final thoughts.

Hi GARoss

Here is one of the best discriptions for Cas latency:

Column Address Strobe (CAS) latency, or CL, is the delay time between the moment a memory controller tells the memory module to access a particular memory column on a RAM memory module, and the moment the data from given array location is available on the module's output pins. In general, the lower the CAS latency, the better.

As for the RAM you might just take a look at the G-Skill RipJawsX RAM; these sticks were developed primarily for the Sandy Bridge.

Well... I did it. I now use Windows 7 as my primary operating environment.

A few glitches along the way, but I have most everything working. As expected, 64 bit drivers are somewhat problematic, and I finally had to use the Virtual XP capability to support my old label printer, since that simply refused to run at all in the 64 bit environment!

The HP Photosmart C7280 gave me fits for days, then finally suddenly decided to install and work fine for reasons that I still don't understand!

Things to like and things not to like about Windows 7.

One of the major disappointments is the removal of the capability of being able to determine the size and position that a folder link opens, it escapes me why that was removed!

A:SSD for HP ENVY 17 Leap Motion SE NB PC

Here is the Manual: Service Manual See p. 40-42. There are two hard drive bays. You have a 1 TB 5400 rpm drive in one and the other is empty.  All you need to do is get an SSD. I recommend the Samsung Evo 850: http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-2-5-Inch-Internal-MZ-75E500B-AM/dp/B00OBRE5UE/ref=sr_1_2?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1447200423&sr=1-2&keywords=Samsung+Evo+850 You need this second bay adapter: http://www.newmodeus.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2_5&products_id=577 Move the old primary hard drive into the second bay and the SSD into the primary bay. This will allow booting from the SSD. You can make a Windows recovery disk and use it to install Windows on the SSD. Post back if any of this is unclear.  If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.

Today openSUSE released the Beta of Leap 42.1, providing an all new look that deviates from previous versions.

The newest regular release from openSUSE has changes to Grub and Plymouth, which provides an impressive introduction to users setting up and using Leap on their hardware or virtual machines.

This new imagery is specific to Leap and openSUSE?s rolling release Tumbleweed will have its own new imagery in the future, which is distinctly different from Leap so users will know what system they are using if they are uses of both distributions.

Users wanting a long-term, stable Linux system can expect Leap to use the most advanced long-term supported branch of the Linux kernel, 4.1 series, which provides significant improvements to ARM hardware architecture.

Anyone who wants to be a tester should download the Beta and test it on their hardware or virtualbox. Testers who do download and try the Beta are encouraged to try their favorite application or simply use it until the scheduled release of Leap?s RC1 on Oct. 15. Testing and reporting bugs will help improve the RC1 release as well as the official release of openSUSE Leap, which is scheduled for release Nov. 4 during SUSECon in Amsterdam.

The Leap Beta reverts back to XDM 1.1.10 rather than 1.1.11, which is available for Tumbleweed and 13.2.

The Beta has an update to KDE Plasma Framwork from 5.12.0 to 5.13.0 and well as additional packages.

There are about 7,200 packages in the Beta.

Leap is developed using cor... Read more

I'm new to Jcreator and I missed about a month from my computer programming class in school, and am far behind. My assignment right now is this problem p5.12 from Computing Concepts with Java Essentials it says:
"A year with 366 days is called a leap year. A year is a leap year if it is divisible by 4 (for ex.,1980). However, since the introduction of the Gregorian calender on October 15, 1582, a year is not a leap year if it is divisible by 100 (for ex., 1900); however, it is a leap year if it is divisible by 400 (for ex., 2000). Write a program that asks the user for a year and computes whether that year is a leap year., Implement a class Year with the method boolean isLeapYear

This is the code that I came up with:
import javax.swing.JOptionPane;

public class LeapYear {

public static void main(String[] args) {
String input = JOptionPane.showInputDialog("Enter Year");
double year = Double.parseDouble(input);
LeapYear newYear = new LeapYear(year);
System.out.println(newYear.boolean isLeapYear()); //line 11

public class LeapYear {
private double year;

public LeapYear(double year)
a = year;

public boolean isLeapYear(){

if(a % 4 == 0)
if(a % 100 != 0) System.out.println("Leap Year");
else if (a % 400 == 0) System.out.println("Leap Year");
else System.out.println("Not Leap Year");

The error I am receiving is on the 11th line of the test class. I know if there is something wrong besides that. I'm not ... Read more

A:Leap Year Trouble in Java

Hi Iron_Dragon,

Welcome to TSG !

The line 11 should be :

There's a mistake in the constructor : the variable 'a' is undefined

private double year;

public LeapYear(double year)
this.year = year;

There's another mistake in isLeapYear() : the method must return a boolean.

public boolean isLeapYear(){
if (year % 4 == 0) {
if (year % 100 != 0) {
System.out.println("Leap Year");
return true;
} else {
if (year % 400 == 0) {
System.out.println("Leap Year");
return true;
} else {
System.out.println("Not Leap Year");
return false;

I have a Toshiba Satellite A135-S2386, running Windows XP. I love the internal Atheros card, but it doesn't talk to Cisco Leap at law school.

So I bought a Dell PCMCIA card which does talk to Cisco, but when the PCMCIA is installed, I can no longer locate the internal card -- which sucks, because the internal card has way better range than the PCMCIA. I was picking up a coffee shop's signal from inside my house for free with it, and no way to do that with the Dell card.

Is there a way to use both....or even better is there a way to make the Atheros card talk to Cisco Leap??

i have recently bought TV Giant as i fancied a change from the regular type of games i usually play and this caught my eye. installation was fine and quick. the game then started up, got past all the manufacturer screens and got on to what looked like the loading screen, all five icons would light up to say that this has loaded then it would just shut off and go back to my desktop.

i am running vista so i thought whether it was that stupid problem where you have to run some programs as administrator, tried this and same thing happened, the weird thing was that no error message popped up detailing what happened, just a dialog box with looking for solution and then the end program screen. i checked in the problems page of control panel and looked at what the problem was. this was what it came up with:

Recently my computer has started displaying giant pixels anytime I want to start up a computer game like The Sims or Trickster. For a while I thought it was just 3-d games that were not working but then I tried playing a 2-d pixel game, and I had the same problom, here is a screen cap of what I am talking about.

The computer that I am running is a eMachines T3256.
It has a nvidia GeForce 4 MX graphics card.
Is there anyways that I could fix this with buying a nother card, or downloading something, or will I have to take my computer in to someone to fix it?

A:Giant pixels, I need help

Re The Sims (original?) - your card should be able to play that

Re Trickster - your card doesn't support DX8 for 1.1 pixel shaders so probably cannot play that

Re the pixel problem - uninstall your present nVidia dtrivers in Add/Remove programs, reboot, and install the latest drivers.

edit: if the l;atest drivers don't fix it, uninstall them and try one of the 53.xx series - they apparently could, with hardware assisted software emulation, support vertex shader model 1.1.

Hi carol, you would need to reduce the image size in a graphics program, like Adobe Photoshop, Photoshop Elements or Paint Shop Pro. Adobe Photoshop is rather expensive, but Photoshop Elements and Paint Shop Pro are arouns $100. There are free image editors out there, I just don't know the names of them, try going to http://www.download.com and look under the graphics section and there should be some editors there you could either download for free or atleast get a free trial to see if you like them. Hope I have helped.

I had this problem as well after removing ArcadeGiant.  I found that it had installed a scheduled update that was calling Aghelp.dll When I removed the scheduled update, the popup error did not return
I have the same problem. Ran Malwarebytes and ccleaner but had no effect. How did you eliminate the scheduled update?

I have a Dell Optiplex 170L with Windows XP, SP2, Home Edition. It has a Pentium 4 processor.

Here is the problem, it has become so slow that at times it locks up for 15 to 20 seconds to complete just opening a Microsoft Works file.

I have run Spybot S&D, CCCleaner and McAfee and found nothing.

Today a green square box showed up in the Task Bar. It showed the CPU running at 100%. I checked the computer over several hours and it continued to run 100%. The last time I checked the CPU was constantly varying from about 10% to 100%. I opened the Task Manager and found that as the CPU usage got higher iexplore would go up. I also noticed that I have two iexplore process running in Task Manager. One has a memory usage of 11,128k and the other 90,280k

Can anyone tell me why the CPU runs at 100% most of the time, when nothing is being done on the computer, why I have two iexplore exe's on the Task Manager, and how to fix this problem with this computer. Thanks

A:Computer slow as leap year Christmas

Because you don't have at least SP3 installed...the system is more vulnerable to malware than others.

As for IE processes (iexplore.exe), anytime IE is used there should be at least two reflected in Task Manager. An additional instance is created for each additional IE window open at that time, while one is reflected all the time, as a basic ccmponent of Windows.

I suspect that the RAM used by any IE process...varies with page content. I currently show one window reflect about 65,000k, with 3 others ranging from 40,000 to 60,000. I have no malware issues .

I have tried to post 3 times on the Lenovo Win 7 64bit computer I'm having this problem on with no luck. I will try on my Dell XP. Firefox is redirecting to ad websites when I open another tab. I have an "ad sidebar" on the L side of all websites. On Amazon, I'm getting a Lucky Leap Deals popping up. Obviously I've downloaded something or clicked on something. I have followed your instructions (hopefully correctly) and will attempt to copy and paste them from a jump drive - hopefully it didn't get infected. Thank you for your help.
