Connecting External screens

Q: Connecting External screens

Hello,I have a lenovo P51s think pad and i would like to connect it to two external screens. does its graphic card support it and if it does how do you guys suggest i connect two external screens to it?

Preferred Solution: Connecting External screens

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Connecting External screens

Hi sravya_K,
Welcome to Lenovo Community! And happy to have you here.

By looking at the ThinkPad P51s Platform Specifications it supports three independent displays with the help of HDMI or USB Type-C ports.
In addition to above, you can also use following docks for hassle free connection to your external monitors:

Mechanical Docks
USB Docks / Cable Docks
Thunderbolt Dock

I hope the above information helped you.
Please feel free to post in Lenovo Community Forums if you have any further queries!

Hi There I recently purchased a Pro X 2 tablet with the assocaited docking station, I have two external HD screens that I want to run as my main dosplay when I am in the office with the tablet closed. I am using HDMI cables connected through the 2 DIsplayport connections on the back of the docking station. My problem is that I cannot find an option that will allow me to use the two screens seperatly once the tablet is closed on to its keyboard. Screen two closes down. The only option I can successfully do is the two screens replicated, which defeats the purpose of the two screens. The screens are Philips 244E. Any help that you can provide will be much apprecaited, as I'm going around in circles currently!

I'm trying to setup three external screens configuration and stumbled upon the following. I have 3 screens: 1. 4k (3840x2160) 60Hz2. 2560x1600 60Hz3. 1920x1200 60Hz I was hoping to use all possible outputs on the laptop (2 USB-C and HDMI), but apparently you can't do that - you can pick only two out of those three. I also tried using USB-C docking station, and again - it limits resolution to 1200p, which is not enough (4K display via USB-C, docking station via second USB-C and two screens 1200p and 1600p via docking station, the latter gets resolution only up to 1200p). So, I found this on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-Thunderbolt-DisplayPort-Compatible/dp/B01DYFI1OE/ref=sr_1_3?ie=....It's a Thunderbolt 3 splitter to two Display Port outputs, claiming to support two screens 4K at 60Hz. And it looks like laptop has Thunderbolt 3 ouput. So, will it support all my screens with full resolutions using that splitter? Again, I envision configuration to be:1. 4K display via 1st USB-C (this will be a miniDP adapter with power)2. Splitter via second (Thunderbolt 3), and two other screens (1920x1200 & 2560x1600) connected using that splitter. Will that work? Thanks,Yury

Dear all

I am running Bloomberg and need the picture to extend on to two 24" full HD LCD screens. Including the integrated screen of my current laptop, I use three panels at once. Can I do that with the Z30 1 CZ? Will I have to buy a docking station for that?

At the moment I am using an ultrabook from a different manufacturer but I am not satisfied for reasons that have nothing to do with the display. Currently I use a docking station where one screen connects by DVI and the other by VGA cable.

With the Z30, can I just use the VGA and the HDMI ports of the laptop to get the same solution?
Best wishes,

A:Portege Z30 - need to extend display to two external screens

From my knowledge the display out ?feature? depends on the graphic card/chip.

Usually you can use either the VGA or HDMI output.
VGA (RGB) port provides analogue signal, HDMI provides digital signal and as far as I know you cannot use both at the same time?

However, you could purchase an "usb hdmi adapter? adapter which would allow you to use two external monitors simultaneously.

Hi, I'm planning to buy a Probook 650 G2 or a 640 G2, in combination with a standard 90W docking station. I plan on using 3 displays: 2 external (hooked up via vga/dvi) and the internal laptop display. Can these 3 screens be used simultaneously? In the past, the Intel graphic card only allowed to use 2 displays. The new Intel DH 520 chipset should allow 3 screens. Can anyone confirm please?

Unfortunately it isn't really about the chipset. It can be done via the operating system. You may be able to use two external display devices fomr the ports on the notebook, depending on the configuration you have selected to have it delivered with. You can use a docking station in order to use two external displays with your notebook.  See the following examplehttp://store.hp.com/us/en/pdp/z---categories-for-promotions/kensington-usb-30-docking-station-with-d...

Hi all, We just bought 5x Zbook 15 laptops as replacement for our Dell line, they have the latest drivers and bios from the HP site. We have/had 2 issue when the laptop is sitting in the dock ( 230w dock ) The first one : When the laptop (W7/8/8.1 or Ubuntu) is started in the dock so with the screen closed the external screens work perfect from starting the laptop till shutting down. The only that does not work is the laptop screen when opening or when getting the laptop off the dock, only thing that worked was restarting with the laptop screen opened. Solution HP helpdesk : Turn off the Hybrid Graphics Enhanced Display Feature in the bios. So I thought ok solved.... NOT Second issue : Now when booting in dock with laptop screen closed the external screens only turn on if Windows/Ubuntu is started, this will be ok for a lot of consumers but not for companies as they are using bios passwords when now is not visable so they need to guess when typing the password.  Case : 4734559318 / 4733480978 HP enigeer came onsite and came to the same conclusion I already made... It's a bios --> hardware controlling issue. Hopefully will this supposedly bios issue (control bios -> hardware) be resolved otherwise we will probably go back to Dell!

A:Zbook 15 Docking/external screens issue

If you have the latest BIOS and BOTH Intel and NVIDIA graphics drivers installed, please, call HP support back and ask for an escalation. Intel graphics is used most of the time (unless applications use OpenGL or other 3D graphics) and there may be an issue with resume from suspend with that driver

I work for HP. All opinions and comments are my own.

Hello Friends,
I have a problem because of a problem. I got bit by the endless loop boot up because of the last MS update.

I am now waiting for MS to send me an XP CD, ya 6-7 days w/o my machine!

Now the problem: I decided it would be a good idea to hook up my laptop to my cordless KB and Mouse, went without a hitch. The problem came when I decided to hook my 23" monitor to the laptop also.

Yes, now I have no monitor working. I get black screens on both machines, I do get a pointer but it is useless. The monitor is an acer and the LT is a HP DV9205. I have tried the fn+F4 along all the F combinations.

Now a bit more information: I am able to ctrl alt del and pull up the processes running, it shows no apps running. I am also able to open in safe mode and can see both screen in safe mode.

If I uninstall the Nivdia driver for the acer and reboot without the monitor hooked up the LT I still have only the black screen on the LP.

Help please. I am now working from a netbook, and it is killing me

I have a friend who says her external monitors (she has 2 connected to her dock) have been randomly flickering/going black momentarily (and always simultaneous/syncronized with each other) for the past 3 weeks or so. The other day her internal screen went black for about 15 minutes, and by restarting several times, she said it eventually came back. She said the battery was low when her internal screen went down, but I don't think that would be a cause (as it happens when she is docked and charging)I checked the graphics drivers, everything was up to date, but the "Monitor" driver needed an update. Again I don't think that would solve the issue as it is also doing this on her dock.Any thought on what could cause this?

hi i've had a slew of problems with my new computer

-i get blue screened and it says a warning message that isn't the same from the previous windows, you know hwo it normally said your system has become unstable and what not. this message says that there was an error and windows is shutting itself down to prevent further damage

-i get black screened(iduno if thats the term) but what happens is i'll be working on some files and then out of nowhere my monitor goes black, the computer and monitor stay on, but the monitor goes into some sort of standby mode thing where the power light flashes

-i also ocassionally have trouble rebooting one of my other computers and whenever it gives me a problem the screen goes black and there's a green line that goes across the top of the monitor

iv'e tried spy ware removing programs/anti viruses/fire walls none of them seem to be working

any help would be greatly apprecieated

A:Solved: blue screens black screens green screens

The issues sound a bit like a hardware failure, the blue STOP screen could be hardware or software.

The Black screen sounds like the PC has died, but the power supply continues to run. This could well be hardware.

Both issues could be something like overheating of the CPU (are all fans running, is the CPU fan dust clogged - shouldnt be if it's "new")?

If it's "new" and under warranty, take it back.

It would have helped to know if it was a desktop or laptop though.

Hi. i just recently started having this problem in IE6. firefox is perfectly fine. anytime there is a link that opens in a new browser window the window is white/blank. well, sometimes. there is no status bar at the bottom or anything at all. i've just noticed it happening in some programs that i use at work as well that use a java platform. for instance, i would create some content in a wizzywig that our content management software has and then hit the preview button, and it also is blank. another example is when i go to kaspersky online scan page and hit the button to start an online scan....blank. doesn't even let me update my definitions. i dont really want to install IE7 cause i heard it had major interpretation issues when designing web pages, which is what i do at work. can anyone help me out here? i thought maybe there is a virus in my system or my IE was hijacked cause i never changed any cookie or privacy settings ever. here is my hijackthis log.

I had posted this on another thread concerning a blue screen in a Sony Vaio but was advised to remove it and start a new thread which I?m doing here. I have a two year old Sony Vaio 64 bit with Windows 7 Home Premium, Service pack 1. I had no problem with it until I put on Norton 360 when blue screens started generating. I posted on here a week ago and uploaded a zip file and followed the advice given after analysis.
I got onto Norton Community as advised and uploaded the contents of the BSOD screen which only occurred when I started the computer. They gave me a link to a Microsoft Knowledge base article at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/979444 which in turn led me to the following hotfix :- http://hotfixv4.microsoft.com/Windows%207/WindowsServer%202008%20R2/sp1/Fix302249/7600/free/404162_intl_x64_zip.exe
I downloaded this Hotfix and got no BSOD for a week when I got another one. The contents of the BSOD screen I got after one week were as follows:-
A problem has been detected and windows has shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If problems continue disable or remove any newly installed hardwear or softwear. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer press F8 to select advanced start-up options and then select safe mode.

Dear All, Hope all of you are very good! My name is Eduardo and I'm from Brazil. I have a ultrabook U310 touch from Lenovo, s/n QB06816995, and I am in a terrible problem! The screen of this ultrabook is broken and I'm using an external VGA monitor at this moment. I have connected the external VGA monitor in the HDMI port of the ultrabook using a HDMI/VGA cable. Using an external monitor I'm not able to see the BIOS or boot screens when I turn on the ultrabook. The first screen that I have seen is the Windows logon (maybe because in that moment, the operating system has sent a signal to an external monitor and in the boot this situation doesn't happen). The problem is: I want and I have to install a new operating system in this ultrabook once I can't enter into the original SO anymore, and for doing that, I have to access the BIOS and change the priority of booting in order to use a windows bootable pendrive or DVD. I have already tried to do the following steps: 1) to use the keys to change from the main screen to an external monitor; 2) disconnect the battery for 15 seconds and drain the energy in order to do the first step again; 3) remove the HDD and connect it in another computer to format it using a wintohdd software and assemble it again in the ultrabook; 4) to do the third step without using the wintohdd software; 5) look at the youtube and try to find some videos where I could watch someone doing something i... I have a dell Inspiron 13 7349 laptop running stock windows 8.  I recently updated the display driver to the latest version from the dell support site (based on my service tag).  The driver is Intel(R) HD Graphics family (dated 2016-03-23).  Since then, each time I try to connect the laptop to an external monitor, or if I try to change the screen resolution, the screen refreshes to a blank page - I can see the mouse pointer, but nothing else.  The solution is to either close the laptop lip and reopen (works 60%) of the time.  The other solution is to restart the laptop (so I lost all the unsaved information).  I have been using/connecting to this same external monitor for at least a year with this laptop on older driver.  Downgrading to the previous driver is not an option because it was causing other more serious problems.  Does anyone know what may be wrong here? It appears to be a driver issue, but I m not sure how to overcome.

I'm beginning with this link because it is related to this previous issue. Its still the same computer with the same general problems. However, I discovered that by ensuring that windows media player was constantly playing music, the computer operates fast and smoothly for as long as I need it to (sometimes longer than 24 hours), albeit with the fan running full speed and flooding the house with its noise. All has been well until the other day I needed to burn some cds and reconnected the cdrom. Since then, its been subject to occasional freezes, mostly when left to sit when I leave the house on a whim. I've noticed that I sometimes return to a black screen, but erroneously attributed it to my computers failed attempts to hibernate (even though that option is disabled). Anyway, its been working wonderfully anyway when I've needed to use it. However, today I was doing a little basic browsing, only about three tabs open of an automotive website I frequently read. The screen randomly went all white while loading a page, and the computer froze up. My only option when it does that is to do a hard restart, so I did. I decided to disconnect my cdrom again. The computer then booted up normally, showed my desktop and loaded all icons and everything, but before everything was up and running, the whole screen went black and it froze. Then I got this computers very first "blue ... Read more

A:white screens, black screens, blue screens... out of nowhere!

OK, I have read you last thread and sounds like you made some progress.

Lets see the details of the Blue Screen, follow this guide to attach it to your next post.

First locate your minidump files, they are usually found by clicking on your C: drive, in Windows Explorer, then click on Windows to view the contents. If your operating system is installed under a different drive letter then look there. They should be stored under a file called minidump. The files will have a .dmp extension.
Zip up at least 6 of the most recent files into one zip folder and save on your desktop (if there are less then just zip up what you have).
NOTE To zip up a file in Windows (all versions). Right-click the file or folder, click on Send To, and then click Compressed (zipped) Folder and save it to your desktop.
Open Windows Explorer, click on Desktop in the left column so you can see the zip file. In the left column click on C: > Windows > Minidump and then drag & drop any additional .dmp files into the zip folder.

• Below the Message Box click on Go Advanced. Then scroll down until you see a button, Manage Attachments. Click on that and a new window opens.
• Click on the Browse button, find the zip folder you made earlier and doubleclick on it.
• Now click on the Upload button. When done, click on the Close this window button at the bottom of the page.
• Enter your message-text in the message box, then click on Submit Message/Reply.Click to... Read more

A:connecting an external monitor

That should be in your video settings. It's probably under something labled "Additional Monitors." A lot of settings like that are pretty dependent on your graphics card software. What type of graphics do you have?

Also, are you trying to display on the TV and the Laptop simultanously? For the interim, you might be able to just click Fn-F8 (I think that's the right one for most laptops), which will switch displays to the TV. If it isn't F8, you should still be able to determine which of those keys. This will at least let us know that the computer is seeing the TV.

Hi,I need some advice here Please.I have two spare sata hdd one is in an enclosure ''caddy'' and thinking of getting another caddy for the other one.
But been thinking on that line that if I did that I would have two caddy's two power supplies and two usb cables,So can anybody put me on the correct track is it possible for me to have some sort of caddy that will accept the two sata hdd then only have one power supply and one usb cable.
Would that be possible,I don't need anything very complicated.
Any thoughts here Please.

A:Advice on Connecting External HDD

You say "caddy". Not sure exactly what you mean by that. Maybe you mean "dock", where the drive is pretty much exposed, rather than enclosed.
There are "docks" that will accept 2 standard SATA drives simultaneously, with a single cable and a single power supply.

Here's an example:

VANTEC NexStar SuperSpeed NST-D400SU3-BK Plastic 2.5" & 3.5" Black USB3.0 & eSATA Dual Bay Hard Drive Dock - Newegg.com

These things normally have a power switch, so you could either turn it off when not in use or outright disconnect it and put it in the closet. Depends on how you are using the drives. If they are your primary backup where you'd use at least one of the two drives daily, I'd guess you'd want to leave it connected with the power off. And then turn it on when you wanted to backup. You'd have to keep track of which drive was which when you put them into the dock.

Or just use a single drive dock and rotate the drives into it as needed. I wouldn't think a dual drive dock would be required in most scenarios.

Hi there! I hope I'm in the right forum.
Here's my issue.

We're running Windows 2003 R2 using native Windows DNS

I need to create a DNS entry that will allow our internal users to connect to an external IP. There is no FQDN, just an IP.

I tried a CNAME entry but it would not resolve, I also tried an A record but again it would not work.

I can access the external site by plugging in the IP into a browser but for our users here that will not cut it. They need a user friendly name they can remember that resolves to the external IP

Any help?

i am gettting a BSOD as soon as i plug in a external HDD in the front of my computer

NOT USB External HDD

i mean like external bay HDD the ones you can put inside your PC
But because i can open the flap on the front of my PC i can connect 2 HDDs in there
because mine is a gaming PC

i have had this PC just a few weeks and everything was working fine on monday 15th june 2015

i do daily scans for virsus and stuff

But since wednesday 17th june 2015

every time i connect any HDD i get a BSOD

but yet i freshly reinstalled windows 7 with nothing installed like i just installed windows and then let it start up Like a fresh fresh install and connected the external HDD and gave me the BSOD and i am thinking how can that happen if i just freshly reinstalled windows ?

this happens with any HDD i connect the same thing happens just gives me BSOD

even with windows 8 when i connect any external HDD i get BSOD
well on windows 8 it said crictical process died
and then restarted the computer

But on 7 it just gives the BSOD

Even in safe mode when i connect any HDD it gives me the BSOD

i have fully updated all drivers and windows updates and stuff
still no luck i dont know what is causing this to happen ?

My brother broke his screen on his touchscreen hp laptop(windows 8) and couldn't find the receipt or warranty info. So my mom went out and bought him a new acer. The laptop sat in his closet for awhile until i got him to let me have it. I figured i could hook it up to a monitor for my kids so they could stay off of my laptop. Had to order an adapter because the monitor had only vga while the laptop had only hdmi. After hooking it up with the adapter it worked fine. But he had so much crap on the laptop that it was not running great and had pop ups constantly. So my bf decided to do a system recovery. Since then it is not connecting to the monitor and we can not see anything on the broken screen to know what to do. Really wishing we would have thought about that possibility before doing the system recovery :/ Please somebody help. I am not very knowledgeable with computers aside from the basics so if you guys can explain it in a way that i can understand that would be great.

A:help with connecting to external screen

Hey, holliec87
I feel that you may need to update your drivers.
Can you do the following for me so i can find you the right drivers.
Please download and install Speccy to provide us with information about your computer.  When  FileHippo opens, click on Download latest version in the upper right pane.
When Speccy opens you will see the Speccy Screen
Click on File in the top left hand corner, and then click on Publish Snapshot.
A screen will pop up, please click Yes.
A second screen will pop up, please click Copy to Clipboard.
In your next post right click inside the Reply to Topic box, then click on Paste.  This will load a link to the Speccy log.
Thank you,

I have a Dell Inpiron N5110 laptop and Id like to connect a Viewsonic display to it. I've tried connecting directly to the VGA port and to the HDMI port using a HDMI to VGA converter cable with no success. The display says 'NO SIGNAL' using both the laptops HDMI and VGA ports.
On a previous Dell Inspiron laptop, running XP,  I had no problem connecting and using the Viewsonic. On that laptop all I had to do was right click on the desktop, click Display Setting and Video Output to the VGA port. Win7 doesnt have that option.
Can someone tell me how to get this external display working off of my 5110 Win7 laptop?

A:Connecting and then using an external display

HDMI is digital - VGA is analog.  Are you using an active connector/converter or a simple cable (the latter won't work).

I have a new Inspiron 24 All in One. I want to hook up my Klipsch Pro Media 2.1 Speakers. I can't figure out how to make this work. I plugged the speaker jack into the speaker port at the back. However, the computer doesn't recognize them. I click on the speaker icon on the task bar, but only the built in RealTek speaker shows up. My external speakers are not wireless.
What do I do?? THank you!

When connecting external HDD by USB (or Firewire) a BSOD appears, with only a "KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE" message and no further indications.

Have you run diagnostics on the external HDD's? Here's a link to some free diags: Hard Drive Diagnostic Procedure
Use the inside Windows diagnostics as it's difficult to run them outside of Windows on a Mac

Please be sure that you have ALL Apple Software Updates inside of BootCamp, and that you have all Windows Updates also.
There's no certain cause being pointed out - so I suspect a hardware issue.
Please let us know the results of these diagnostics: Hardware Diagnostics (don't run the hard drive or memory diagnostics outside of Windows).

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

I am trying to connect two external monitors to my HP Probook 650 G1 laptop (and use them along with the onboard screen for a total of 3 displays).  Plugging one monitor in via VGA works fine.  However, when I plug a second into the DisplayPort, the first monitor turns off and both external displays say "No Signal".   I was unable to find a clear answer in the product spec, but it appears there may be a limit of 2 screens using the onboard ports (including the laptop screen).  HP support was completely useless in answering my question and linked to the same spec document that did not have the answer.   So, I tried using a USB adapter to provide an HDMI port (DisplayLink chipset).  However, even plugging in this HDMI cable causes the onboard VGA to disable and both external monitors say "No Signal" Is there any way to connect two external monitors and use them at the same time as the built-in laptop screen?  Thank you.

Hi, I have a Acer Aspire 3050 1908 Lap top with Windows XP
I can hear music from the laptop speakers but when I plug in my little PC speakers they aren't picking up the sound. The speakers are OK, I used them with my portable DVD player. Is there a setting I can change? I'm a little baffled since the speakers are usually plug an play.

Thanks In advance,

I have an AlienWare M11x purchased from Dell Computers. It has Windows 7 Home Premium, Intel Chipset U7300 Dual Core @1.3GHz, 8 gb ram, 64 bit operating system, NVIDIA GEFORCE GT 335M and Mobile Intel (R) 4 Series Express Chipset, 500gb hard drive. It has 3 usb ports (one continuous power). It has no built in dvd drive. I have tried both a USB Hub but most of the time plug directly into the computer. When I plug in a External DVD drive, it will connect and disconnect randomly. It may show it is connected and display that a disk is in it, but when you click on it or launch from it, it will disconnect. About a minute later it will reconnect and then disconnect again. I had an LG Multifunction Drive and when it first did it, I thought the drive was bad so I got rid of the drive and bought an Iomega Super Slim DVD drive and it worked at first but now does the same thing that the first external DVD drive did. I have tried both of the DVD drives with and without the extra power connection. I have downloaded all updates, drivers, etc. It only seems to do it with external DVD Drives. Any memory stick, IPOD, ITOUCH, External Hard drive is recongnized and stays connected. But external DVD drives do not.

I have had this computer for less than 3 months. I tried to contact Dell but when I type in the Service tag number it says that AlienWare does all the support for it. When I go to AlienWare, you have to create an account in order to even ask a question. In order to register for the we... Read more

Hello, everyoneI have a HP ProBook 470 G1 Notebook PC at home and few months ago bought a TV :  a 48'' SAMSUNG UE48JU6000WXXH. Now i want to project the screen of the laptop on the bigger screen of the TV monitor, but so far absolutely nothing. I've tried to do this with HDMI cable, but when i connect both devices with the HDMI cable, the TV monitor says "No signal". Tried to do it through wifi, but ... nothing. Both devices are connected to the same router, each device sees the other.I click on "Project to a second screen", than duplicate and i have big nothing. Can you tell me what I am doing wrong? I go to Change PC settings, than PC and devices, than Display, than Connect to wireless display. I am seeing the TV as a device, it tries to connect for a second or two, than a message appears:"Your television quit waiting" and that's it. Each device sees the other, but it's like the pc for some reason doesnt consider the TV as a monitor. Tried adding the TV as a device, but no result. It is there as a device, but still no picture on the TV from my Notebook. What I am doing wrong?
