Q: I am trying to transfer the program MagicInfo from a machine I believe is about to crash over to a different computer. Both computers run Windows 7. The old computer says it runs Windows 7 under properties, but the display looks like it is pre Windows XP,

I am trying to transfer the program MagicInfo from a machine I believe is about to crash over to a different computer. Both computers run Windows 7. The old computer says it runs Windows 7 under properties, but the display looks like it is pre Windows XP, with
the grey taskbar. I called MagicInfo tech support and they told me I needed to change the formatting of the USB in order to get the program to transfer. In all formats except NFTS, I could not get anything to back up to the flash drive and had to copy the
files from the C drive. In the NFTS format, I can get it to back up directly to the flash drive, but when I bring it to the other machine, the restore wizard still cannot find a backup to restore from. I am not sure how to proceed from here, and I have to
get this done soon. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Update: Enabled Sharing on the USB and tried to get it to work via the network. Found it in the network and it says Windows does not detect any files to restore from. Is it even possible to restore this program in this way?

Thanks!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have been using a personally customized Windows Classic display theme for well over a decade on various Windows operating systems. It's in a file with the title My Preferred Display.Theme. Is there a folder in Windows 7 where I could put this theme file in order to access it from the Win7 display personalization area? I've tried using Personalize>Windows Classic but have not been able to configure the exact look I like.

Thanks!

We see problems with WET so I would not use it. It can lose data and reimports Appdata settings which are corruption path into a new install.

Instead sort your files into User folders, then drag each to external HD or flash stick. On the new PC, open each User folder, on Organize tab Select All, drag the group to the corresponding User folder on Explorer bar. Don't release the left click hold until it confirms in hypertext where you are copying them.

Hello Everyone,
So I don't even know if this is possible or how I could go about doing this. Last year I bought a Windows 8 Pro upgrade disc we used to upgrade our machines from Windows 7 home Premium to 8 Pro. Is it possible for me to use that same upgrade product key for Windows 8 Pro on 8.1 so I could have a Pro version of 8.1? The computer I originally did the upgrade on I am no longer using and is there a way to deactivate the license on that one so it could be used on the new computer I bought? Also I just want the extra's of the Pro version so does it matter it is the license for Windows 8 even though the new computer uses 8.1? Thanks for any input.

I have a Windows 7 computer with Lotus 8.5 on it and I need to transfer Lotus 8.5 and all it's files and emails and the encryption key to the Windows 8 computer. I do not think that Windows 8 will recognize Lotus 8.5 so I had the idea to partition the Windows 8 computer and install Windows 7 on one of the partitions thus making it a dual boot computer, then install Lotus 8.5 to the Windows 7 partition. My problem is Windows 8 is already installed on the computer and Windows website warns not to install the older operating system second.

If you don't (for example, if you install Windows Vista on a computer already running Windows 7), you can render your system inoperable. This can happen because earlier versions of Windows don't recognize the startup files used in more recent versions of Windows and can overwrite them." What should I do? If you have Windows 8 and not 8.1 people have said it is compatible. This was for version 8.5.2

You will need to reinstall the software, but this time, do it using Troubleshoot compatibility
Point to the installation files
Right click the setup file and click 'Troubleshoot compatibility'
Wait while it detects the problem.
Click the option 'Worked in a previous version of Windows'
Select Windows 7 RTM
Click Next
Click Start the program, wait while it installs
When installation is complete, click Finish and save the settings.
See if it works

You could use an application like storagecraft shadowprotect, and do a HIR ( hardware independent restore) on the computer. This would install everything exactly the same as it was on his old pc, with little or no differences. That would need to be purchase, but you could always just use windows easy transfer, and reinstall the needed applications.

Hi Everyone
Just recently installed Windows 7 Professional 64bit on a P5B Asus motherboard running a Intel Pentium Dual Cpu E2200 2.2 GHz (Dual Core not two Cpu's). I ran XP 32bit on it up till recently and because I am starting to replace my laptop with one running Windows 7 I felt I should upgrade the print server.
So my question....
Why does the emblem/avatar/ whatever you wish to call it change?
I am talking about the one that represents the installation of Windows 7 Professional.
It can be found in the control panel> All Control panel items> System or if you right click Computer and click properties it comes right up.
It is the same page that tells you at the bottom whether you are Genuine or activated.
In the middle it has the Windows Experience index.
When I first installed Windows it was like a green ball I think now it is a PC with blue wallpaper and white Microsoft flag.
Any thoughts?

PS...  I will try and take a screen shot of it and attach it later

Hello,

My computer runs painfully slow. It takes awhile to open programs or even folders. It takes 10 seconds or so to even show the folders/programs listed in the start menu. Upon clicking on Internet Explorer, it takes time to open that as well. Web site pages go very slow. Minimizing windows are slow or it will freeze or leave the screen image on the computer for a while. If I drag a window, it will leave a residual trail of the window.

Open and closing programs and browsing the web are the most fustrating because they are very slow.

I have installed and run a complete scan using MBAM, Adaware and AVG Free AntiVirus. I also defraggred the drive numerous times and also uninstalled all programs that I don't use. I deleted old video and audio files on the hard drive. I ran a chkdsk to search for errors. I cleaned the drive using the cleanmgr functin in Windows.

What should I check next?

Tell us the steps you took to run chkdsk.

Running chkdsk in read-only mode...accomplishes nothing. Did you use the chkdsk /r command?

Did you have adequate protection installed...before your system began to slow down?

Is the system current with critical updates?

When did you first notice problems with your system?

Hello EightForums,

I'm having strange issues where my computer just takes a long time to load things.

For example, I used to be able to run half a dozen programs (and four or five tray icons processes) just fine and everything would run smoothly. But now for some reason, running just two or three is causing huge performance issues. Microsoft Word 2013, Zune, Steam, CyberLink PowerDirector, Skype, Google Chrome, and all Adobe products.

You can check my system specs, but I recently wiped my hard drive and installed Windows 8 Pro fresh and I don't understand why this is happening now.

A contributing factor might be that I only have 235 GB left out of my 1 TB? But I don't feel like that should be doing it...

Anyway, let me know if you have any clues. I'll answer your questions.

Regards,

David

A:Windows 8 Machine runs slowly

Test memory and hard drive?

Specs indicate system should run very well, certainly not slow as you mention. Since you did a reinstall, that pretty much excludes the OS. That leaves hardware.

Download Memtest86+ (you want the 2nd one Download - Pre-Compiled Bootable ISO (.zip)). Unzip it then create a CD from the iso file using your CD burning software. There is a good freeware burner called ImgBurn which will do this easily.

DO NOT burn the .iso file directly to CD. It must be used as input to a program that knows what to do with it, like the one I mentioned above.

You can do this on any computer that has a working CD Burner.

You can also use a Flash drive instead of a CD.

Download - Auto-installer for USB Key (Win 9x/2k/xp/7) *NEW!*.
Unzip and run Memtest86+ USB Installer.exe.
It will format the flash drive if you tell it to. I used a small, 16MB flash drive and it had 8.5GB left when done.

Boot the CD or Flash drive and run Memtest86+ for at least 3 complete passes unless it shows errors sooner than that. An overnight run is even better.

Check the hard drive with the manufacturer's diagnostic tools.

If the installation disc came with the old PC, then it's probably an OEM version which means it's tied to that particular machine and cannot be moved to another one.

Hi, How would you transfer complete Windows 7 Home Premium 32 Bit installation from old computer with PATA HDD to New computer with SATA HDD?
Any info would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
John

A:Transfer Windows 7 to New Computer

If either has a WD or Seagate HD I'd use Acronis premium free cloning/imaging suite to clone or image it over, otherwise use Win7 built-in imaging or Macrium - Image your system

Be sure to include MBR and track 0 if asked, have Win7 installer or Repair CD standing by in case it won't start to run Startup Repair - Run 3 Separate Times after making sure Win7 or it's 100mb System REserved (preferred) is marked Active. Mark Partition Active

Hello,

I'm back again with another problem I couldnt fix outright. It is a windows 7 machine, a HP Pavilion dv7. At one time, it was one of the fastest smoothest running new computers (not including personally built machines!) I had ever used. It ran perfectly fine, until one day where it just stopped working properly. Everything became slower than it should be- There is typing delay (sometimes), the volume ticker thing delays (sometimes), IE sometimes becomes unusable it's so slow, youtube videos stutter to the point of a slideshow (again sometimes), and things like word and CPU-z take abnormally long to open. The machine seems "preoccupied"

There are no viruses or malware, it is fully updated, ccleaner'ed, defragged, and overall checked over- no obvious problems. I ran P95 for like an hour to just test general stability and it ran fine in that. There are no apparant bad or too many programs running.

I'm at a loss with this problem- any advice? You guys have never failed me before!

Thanks,
Will

Oh it also seems like the computer runs louder and hotter than it used to, but I may have just forgotten, as this is my friends computer that I just do the work on.

Hi,
I have done my research on this forum and found that a lot of people have had issues with Windows Explorer restarting constantly.
I am using Windows 7 and have recently had this issue with my laptop (with windows explorer crashing and restarting every three or four minutes). However, the computer also runs very slowly making it very difficult to do anything at all even when explorer is running. I have tried using the system file checker command but it simply runs through some filenames very fast and then disappears. I have also tried to defragment or recover my system but whenever I click on any option in 'control panel' the page freezes and the command does not open.

It is worth saying that I did recently drop my laptop so this could have something to do with that.

I've exhausted all the ideas that I have seen on this site regarding this issue so I thought I should make my own thread before calling out a technician just in case there is anything else I could do.

Is there anything else that anyone could recommend trying?

Thanks.

- Joe

I have a laptop with Windows 8 pre-installed (currently running 8.1 64-bit). I also purchased Windows 8 Pro a while ago. It was installed on another laptop, but has since been removed.

I decided to upgrade my current laptop to Pro in the add features menu. It worked fine, but the license is not activated because the activation server thinks the license is still in use by the older laptop.

I tried the automated call service, however, when asked how many computers the product was installed on, I made the error of saying more than one. Since then, when I try the automated call service, my Installation ID is refused or something and I'm put on hold for ages. I can't remain on hold because it's draining my money. I lost 10? in 15 minutes of calls.

I managed to chat with the Windows Answer Desk and all the woman kept pointing me to was to reinstall windows. I really don't want to do that.

Is there a way to transfer the license, or at least go back to Windows 8.1 (the OEM version) without having to refresh?

Thanks

I purchased a retail copy of Windows 7 Home Premium Edition which included both the 32 bit and 64 bit discs. I am currently using the 32 bit version on my computer. I am considering using the Update Anytime online to upgrade to Windows Pro.
In the future, if I build a new computer, can I use the 64 bit disc for install, or am I limited to the 32 bit, since I have already used it? If I can use the 64 bit version, can I still use the key provided for the upgrade to Windows Pro for my old computer?
I don't want to upgrade my old computer to Windows Pro edition if I can't transfer it to a 64 bit version I would need for a new computer. Would the correct sequence be to install the 64 bit Home Premium edition to the new computer, then use the key provided by Microsoft for the Pro version update given to me on the 32 bit update?

A:Windows 7 transfer to new computer questions

Your existing licence will activate 32 or 64 regardless so no problem there as long as its only on one machine at one time and as its retail copy could be moved to new machine, regards the upgrade I think the upgrade would technically be meant for the same machine although it may work on another I think you would prob be violating the EULA
Hopefully someone else will clarify with a bit more certainty

I've been banging my head on the wall for several days on this one. I did a lot of searches and tried numerous suggestions, but have had no luck as of yet.

My Windows 7 Ultimate x64 machine recently stopped being able to communicate with any other machines on the network. It can ping them by name, but can't browse to any shared folders or use any shared services. I do have one networked printer, but access was via http so it seems to work. The big problem is that I have some Windows XP machines that have shared folders and shared printers and I can not access them.

Here are the details of my setup.

- Linksys WRT54G router drives the internet (updated to latest firmware)
- Windows 7 Ultimate x64 machine plugged directly into WRT54G ethernet port
- Epson Workforce printer plugged into ethernet port
- 2 Windows XP machines connected via wireless
- 1 Windows 7 32-bit laptop connected via wireless

Since the Epson worked fine I thought may it is a wireless issue or maybe an issue connecting from Windows 7 to Windows XP. I went through hundreds of forum posts about people with issues connecting to XP with no luck (i.e. network discovery is on, file/print sharing is enabled, all machines on the same Workgroup, etc.). All of the various XP machines can see each other, ping each other, and browse each other's shared folders. In fact, all of said machines are capable of browsing the Windows 7 64-bit machine's shared folders, but it can't browse theirs.

From the Windows 7 mac... Read more

Sorry to hear about your problems, I recently had a problem with this especially trying to communicate Windows XP Home 32 to Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit. IT sounds like you have all your bases covered but I would recommend disabling your firewall(s) temporarily and seeing if you can communicate. Lemme know how this goes for you.

Hi all,

I'm finding Windows 10 enjoyable and pleasant for the most part.

Unfortunately, some things that are easy to find or to do (probably due to years of experience) in Windows 7 and 8/8.1 are not easy to find, assuming they exist at all, in Windows 10 build 10130. For instance, I've looked high and low for "Change PC Settings" and it is like the proverbial needle in the haystack.

My present problem is that I can't see other computers in my network/workgroup. They are visible to my Windows 7 and 8.1 computers. My network is set to private in Windows 10. Find devices is set to on.

Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks,

keseyken

I note that I can ping all my devices, Squeezeboxes, WDMycloud hard disk, chromecast, computers etc., and the squeezeboxes, Logitech Media Server , WDMYcloud and Chromecast are showing up as devices.

A:Can't see other computers in Workgroup on Windows 10 computer

There's a Settings icon in the start menu, just about the All Apps button and Power Buttons. This is the same as "Change PC Settings" in Windows 8.x

I'm having a really weird issue with a Windows 7 computer at my workplace. The computer can see and access the other computers on the domain, but other computers can't access it. (They can, however, see it on the domain.)

I've checked everything from the firewall to various domain login scripts to whether sharing was just plain turned off--nothing.

Has anyone had a problem like this, and if so any insight would be appreciated

Hi,

My McAfee just expired and I removed it from my computer to install AntiVir but when I did, Windows Security says Norton 360 is running even though I can't find any Norton files. I don't know if I'm protected or not and I believe my machine is infected. Also, I keep getting a message that Windows cannot get any updates. I'd really appreciate your help and I'm just hoping to clean my machine up and make sure that it's properly protected.

I have a Dell Inspiron 530 with an Intel Core2 Duo CPU 2.33 GHz with 3 GB of RAM and I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium Svc Pack 1 and IE 7. And I believe I have the install disks. Izipped the attach and ark files together accidentally, I hope that doesn't cause a problem.

Thank you very much...

A:Computer runs slow, windows can't get updates, can't remove Norton

Hi -

I don't see anything in the logs to suggest infection.

Run the Norton Removal Tool

1. Download this file:

ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/englis...moval_Tool.exe

Save the file to the Windows desktop.

2. On the Windows desktop, double-click the Norton Removal Tool icon.

3. Follow the on-screen instructions. Your computer may be restarted more than once, and you may be asked to repeat some steps after the computer restarts.

Also run the McAfee Removal Tool.

Download the McAfee Removal Tool.

Double click on MCPR.exe to launch it, then Click Run. A window should appear and disappear, this is normal. A new window should popup and begin the uninstall. When prompted to reboot your computer type Y.

You should now be able to install Avira. (nice choice) Run a full system scan, save the log and post it. (Click on the Report button when the full scan is complete.)
