Phantom touch on Helix 1st gen after display replacement

Q: Phantom touch on Helix 1st gen after display replacement

Hello Community I have a ThinkPad Helix (1st Gen) N3Z6CGES running Windows 10. Bought it back in 2013.Long time i was very happy with the device. Smaller issues, no big deals.Among others: Some static Windows control buttons burnt into the screen. Therefore, in September 2017 I decided to give it to a certified dealer, before my ThinkPlus service runs out. They changed the screen and since the Helix has this new screen, I have the same problem as it is seen in this video:Lenovo Yoga 3 14 freaking around... [YouTube]Exept for my phantom touches only occure in the lower corners of the screen. Which doesn't make it any better, though.Rebooting gives me a break for a few minutes, but then it start again out of nowhere. Sadly, for some time, after the repair i haven't used the notebook at at all, so I didn't realize there is this problem.During this time, of course my ThinkPlus Service and the warranty for the device run out. But then again I needed my notebook very urgently, saw the problem and didn't have the opportunity to give it to repair again.I improvised and turned off the touch screen in the Device Manager. I could only use the digitizer, but at least i was able to work with the Helix. Few days ago there was a Windows update and i noticed that this update resetted my settings in the device manager. I was able to use the touch input completely problem-free again and felt happy like a little child, not knowing how much is missed this comfort! The problem was gone for exactly one day. Now it is back, stronger than ever and i want this fixed now.Any idea what i can do about it?I've heard for the Yoga 13 there was then a BIOS-update which settled the update. There is nothing like that for my Helix. Pretty sure, it is a hardware defect of the new display, since calibrating the touch input, reinstalling the OS and updating all drives did not work out. Probably it's too late to reclaim the repair, which took place back in Sept. 2017, in't it?They won't believe me, the problem exists already since then. What do you think?(Maybe i have another chance, because the hole for the front-facing camera of the new display is not correctly centered, so the edges of the recorded image is black, which is clearly their fault, not mine )Thanks ahead for any help

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Title kind of says it all. I've lost the back set of rubber feet on my 1st gen Helix and it's starting to strach the bottom up and the laptop slides pretty easy now. Where can I find replacement or is it even possible?

A:Replacement feet for 1st gen Helix

I don't have the part to look at, but the rubber feet are usually part of a base misc. part kit. For the Helix, the number is 04x0526

Hi Guys, The fan on my laptop had been making an insane amount of noise and the computer had been overheating and shutting down for quite some time.  So finally I took the liberty to order a replacement part from Ebay.  The disassembly was a breeze, the part fit in perfectly and reassembly wasn't bad either.  But when I tried to power up, the fan would spin for a few seconds and then shut down, nothing on the screen.   So by process of elimination, I figured out that if I left the cable connecting the bottom accessories to the motherboard disconnected, it worked fine.  Fan is spinning correctly, no overheating issues.  Of course that leaves with no functioning docstation essentially.  I cannot use the speakers, USB or even the power source from the docking station.   Any ideas here?  Is there a specific pattern that I am supposed to reconnect the cables?  I am attaching a picture with the cable circled in red just for references.  Thanks!

Hi from germany, i have exacly the same problem here. I bought the identical helix system with i7 and 8gb. Sadly i have the same issues. The touchscreen started to be unresponsive and/or laggy, all over the screen. Then somehow it started to make phantomtouches on one point again and again. This phantomtouches are fighting with the stylus, trackpad and sometimes touches of my hand. Needless to say that the rate of phantomtouches is that high that you can't win the fight. I tried recalibration, driver updates, windowsupdates, did a rollback (2x) and reseted the whole Helix Thinkpad to the original delivery status. After doing the reset via windows the notebook rebooted and .... the phantomtouch was right on the exact same point as before. Even before i could register my pcname and so on. Not to mention that this error accured in tablet and notebookmode. Sometimes the phantomtouches stopped, but they just returned 5minutes later. Would love to see a solution there.

A:Re: Lenovo Helix Touch Screen Malfunctioning

I received my Helix (36984SU, i7, 8gb RAM, 256 gb HD) approximately 10 days ago.  Over the weekend I began to experience malfunctioning of the touch screen when using in tablet mode.  At first there was a single vertical section of the touch screen that was unresponsive.  Now, the problem has spread to the entire touch screen although the bottom half (when held in landscape) is basically inoperable - the screen detects "phantom" touches and very inaccurate real touches (as shown below).  Squeezing the bezel around the screen seems to cause more phantom touches to be detected.

The stylus works fine although it tends to battle with the touch screen because the touch screen is constantly detecting "phantom" touches.

Also, I just re-docked the tablet last night and found that the touch-pad mouse also gets stuck in the bottom left of the screen but is released after about 10 seconds of being docked.  This may be due to fighting with the touch screen as well.

I tried re-calibrating but I can't even hit the targets given in the re-calibration tool due to the inaccuracy.

As you can see in the image below, I drew the red arrows with the stylus and then I went back and traced the red arrows with my finger thus producing the green lines with the touch screen.

I also created a couple videos of the malfunction in action:

Hi, My ThinkPad Touch Helix has an option in the BIOS for cooling the tablet screen.  I believe it reduces performance to make the back of the screen cooler to touch. Does anyone know whether it is possible toggle this setting from the OS?  Sometime if used on the lap, screen is a little too hot.  It would be nice to be able to toggle from the OS, rather than have to change from the BIOS everytime. Thanks Chris

Note taking with my new Helix is unbelievably frustrating! It's Windows 8 Pro -- fully updated (Windows and Lenovo drivers and apps). I am using Microsoft OneNote 2013. The problem is regular locking up or freezing of one or the other of the touch screen or the pen / stylus. Sometimes the pen still works, but fingers on the touch screen have no effect. Other times the the touch screen works, but not the pen. I'm not 100% certain that it's limited just to OneNote, but that's where it's guaranteed to happen. I can "fix" the problem most of the time by putting the Helix into sleep mode and then waking. Other times I have to shut down and restart. During a two hour session this will happen a dozen times at least. This makes it nearly unusable. Rob

A:Touch screen and pen/stylus stop working - Helix

I experience almost the same problem. It seems that when I use OneNote with the stylus, the touch input stops working. I know that it is supposed to be disabled while using the stylus on/near the screen. What happens is that if I for instance use the stylus, switch to the windows 8 tile screen and try to use my finger nothing happens. If I touch an icon with the stylus it works, and then I can use my fingers - for a little while. Then it stops working again, and I need to use the stylus to reactivate touch input. And so on and so on. I tried to do what bloggs stated could work - to put the device in sleep mode and restart. This resulted in the windows 8-version of the bluescreen...

????I am facing a rather unique problem with the Thinkpad Helix (2nd Gen). The thing is, we have two Helix laptops in our family. Sometime after the upgrade to Win 10, I faced significant problems with the touchpad - the point would stop moving and even disappear and even the trackpoint would not work at this point. But the touch display was (and still is) working flawlessly, so I simply shut down Windows and started again. Since this was not the ideal scenario, I had a chat with a Lenovo executive and with some friends, and after considering all the opinions, uninstalled the drivers for the touchpad and reinstalled them (with the automatic "search for drivers online" option. Problem solved! Although I am still facing a few minor issues (which I dont want to address right now) with this machine, it is now functioning well enough for normal daily use.So, with the July 29 deadline for the free Win 10 upgrade looming, I decided it was better to upgrade and possibly regret rather than regret not installing. And, as expected, I faced the touchpad problems soon after the upgrade (which I was kinda prepared for, or so I thought). Armed with the solution which worked on the first Helix, I went about the uninstalling and reinstalling of the touchpad (and later some other) drivers. Sure enough, the touchpad problem went away. However, this has now resulted in the touch screen not responding to touch (of finger or pen). When I saw the "about" in settings, the display properties ... Read more

It often happens after opening the screen after being in sleep mode.  Any suggestions from a tech would be great otherwhise it's getting returned... Thank you for your help!

I've had this machine about about a week, so far I really like it.  Can't say yet that I love it yet, but it does what I need it to and the price is better than a tablet with the same functions and already has a keyboard.  This machine is kept in a padded case when not used in my desk drawer it does not bounce around in my briefcase etc.
This morning the left button on the touch pad does not work.  At first glance it sort of looks like it is caught on something or stuck, the right button works great a broken switch under the button is also possible but this thing doesn't move at all I'd think a switch would still move just not contact properly inside.  I need my machine and I've made a couple of upgrades like a SSD for the stock hard drive and a 8 gig ram chip, I am not thrilled about pulling those components in order to return for warranty replacement etc. as I'm pretty sure you won't be returning the same machine I sent in.  I'm considering pulling it apart to see if it is indeed stuck so it can be pushed back out from the inside but if this is a common issue with this machine I'd like to know that...
Can I be sent a new touch pad component, I believe I saw this is a separate board that attaches to the motherboard with a ribbon cable?  I'm not afraid of this procedure myself as I've been building desktops since the 90's and this is a really simple hardware to work on from the looks o... A:New week old Inspiron 11 3000 3558 (touch) stuck or broken button on touch pad--warranty parts replacement?

This is an fyi about the final resolution of this issue.  After a lot of arguing dell sent me what was supposed to be the touchpad but what I got was only the plastic palmrest no touchpad. Then because it's a "daughter card" I got more argument about the touchpad.  I got hot enough that I opened up the back, lifted out the battery, took out the two funky looking screws and the whole pad just fell right out of the machine.  The buttons seemed fine so I screwed it back down, put the battery back in and closed it up.  It's now great, the button was indeed hung up on the edge of the plastic palmrest.  This is a very well designed inside machine, it all screws down and all connections are with plugs or ribbon cables.  I wrote back to dell and told them they need to fire their tech manual writers because they're idiots, a monkey could have done this.  Apparently it is not easy to find only the mouse pad it's generally sold with the palmrest from what I can tell.  This whole machine is so well designed I scratch my head why the cpu isn't socketed unless they decided there was no room for a socket etc, which I can see that argument.  So if your mouse pad quits try popping it out first it may just be hung up.

I am getting ghost touches all over my touchscreen, plus the mouse barely works and the keyboard doesn't work at all when the ghost touches are present.  I am running on Windows 10 and have owned this laptop since May of 2014 (purchased new directly from Lenovo.com). This issue is getting worse and worse as time goes on.  Even when I disable the touchscreen capability (via Device Manager/Human Interface Devices) it is  not permanently disabled and it just comes back on randomly, without me enabling it again. If you could tell me a way to permanently disable the touch screen feature, at least that would resolve the main problem for now. Obviously I'd love for my touch screen to work properly though. I've been having this problem for many months now, though in the last month or two it's gotten a lot worse and a lot more frequent (at least once if not multiple times a day).  I am at my wit's end. Thank you.

Hello, I've had my Yoga 900-13ISK2 Signature Edition for a little less than 2 years and up until recently it has been working flawlessly.  After the recent windows 10 1803 update, I started seeing the "phantom touches" or "ghost touches" phenomena on my screen.  It is not very frequent, but it does happen from time to time.  I am not sure if anything triggers the behavior as it normally happens randomly and not related to any particular task.   This is very annoying and disruptive especially because I use this machine for work.  I checked to make sure all my drivers were up-to-date and they all are.  I checked the forum and there were no solutions for my PC there either.  I used the recovery function to do a clean install of windows, thinking that maybe the 1803 patch caused this issue and that seemed to work fine for a while but the phenomena came back.  By the way, the signature edition doesn't come with the factory image partition (major error on Lenovo's part - that should be standard on all devices, no matter what the edition) and now the Novo/Nova (sp?) button doesn't work and the Airplane Mode hot key doesn't work.  For such a premium laptop, it is definitely lacking in areas that are easy to provide to make the customer experience positive. I still have this issue and want to know if anyone else is seeing this problem.  I also tried stopping the HID touchscreen controller and re-starting to see if that h... I have Dell Inspiron 5547 laptop (Touch Screen, 15 inches, 16 GB RAM and i7 4th Gen processor, Out of Warranty). Some days back, suddenly the display went dim and anything is hardly visible. After some initial investigation, the display chip (may be VGA or LED display chip) on the motherboard appears to be burnt out (may be due to voltage surge). Even the numbers printed on the chip is not readable because of which it is difficult for the local repairing shops to repair this problem.
I think Dell India Service Center doesn't deal with chip level repair and hence replacing motherboard is the only way they can fix this. This will be very costly (considering that the laptop is not under warranty so will have to pay for warranty extension, motherboard replacement and repair service) and time consuming.
Hence, to avoid all this I have come here to seek some assistance.
If there are anyone using the same laptop (Inspiron 5000 series 5547 Touch Screen Display with i7 4th Gen Processor and 16 GB RAM) then could you please take a clear picture of your laptop's motherboard or if you recognize the display chip then only that should be sufficient. In this case, I can read the chip related number from the image and try to repair it.
What are the charges for buying a warranty for the laptop, motherboard of my laptop and repairing charge?

Request your response and help.

Regards,
Rohit Kumar

A:Display Issue - Dim Display for Dell Inspiron 5000 (Model 5547) - Touch Screen Display with i7 4th Gen Processor and 16 GB RAM

You'll have to call Dell about the possibility of a warranty extension;  in the US, it's sometimes possible but will likely run over $300 -- or about what a board replacement would cost.
If you're getting video, the GPU is OK -- and it's more likely the power circuit to the backlight that's bad.  It'll likely cost as much to repair as to replace the board -- though you'll still be putting $300-400 into an out of warranty system, so replacing the system may be a better idea (if you do this, consider buying a 3-year warranty with the next system).

Hi, You don't need to spend money to swap. Please try the following steps to disable touchscreen. First, go to the device the manager by opening the "Charm Menu" and search for "Device Manager." If you don't see it, change the search filter to "Settings."Once in the Device Manager, expand "Tab." Then find "Human Interface Devices" and expand it.You should see several "HID-compliant device" listings. Some PCs will call it an HID-Compliant Touch Screen, but yours may vary?if you don't have a touch screen option, you may have to try each HID Compliant ____ until one works. When asked if you want to disable the device, select "yes." That's it! The touch screen on your Windows 8 device should be disabled.   You can turn back on any time. Regards.

I dont know whats going on. I tried to delete or disable the second monitor but i could not. What should i do?

I used to have 33c temps idle and not its 50c. It used to display only the external monitor. Now it displays 2 and the 2 is my main.

I dont have any recovery or 8.1 disks... I tried a refresh and it said "missing files" so i cant even do that...

I am going to include pictures so you could follow the steps properly. Go to https://support.hp.com then type the product number to the search bar  Click Software and Drivers  Then Click Go  Select the current version of windows you are using  Then look for the drivers you seek that you believe missing.  Good luck!

Here is the Service Manual: Manual Unfortunately HP does not "spare" the glass and and digitizer as a separate part. For this you have to go into the aftermarket: http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-HP-Envy-X360-m6-w103dx-M6-W104dx-15-6-Digitizer-Touch-Screen-Glass-US-FA... Note the warning on this auction. You are going to have to disassemble the unit to check the digitizer and see if it matches the one in this auction.  If not we can help you find the right one.

I have a HP Pavilion Notebook 17g-150cy purchased at Walmart in 2016 and currently using my TV as a monitor thru the HDMI connection. The glass and 17.3-inch diagonal HD+(33) WLED-backlit touchscreen display (1600 x 900)is damaged and non-operational. My cobalt blue casing is intact with no cracks or scratches. I wish to repair the device and I am unable to locate the maintenance and service manual for my specific model number. I was only able to locate the maintenance and service guide for the HP Pavilion Notebook 17 Models 17-g000 ? 17-g099 AMD models. Is there a maintenance and service guide available specifically for my notebook? Can I use the above maintenance guide for parts? I reviewed the maintenance and service guide for the HP Pavilion Notebook 17 Models 17-g000 ? 17-g099 AMD models (pages 62-68) and wanted to know........ How I determine which screen (part numbers) to research and purchase, HD or FHD? Can the display and casing be purchased as one (1) piece? I appreciate your assistance in advance.

Hi, Looks like 000 to 099 and 100 to 199 laptops share same manuals. There are 3 of them on the following link:       http://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-pavilion-17-g100-notebook-pc-series/8499304/manuals Using Partsufer, part number for its screen: 809300-001 which is  LCD PANEL 17.3 AG HD+ TS (HD+ is 1600 x 900).       http://partsurfer.hp.com/search.aspx For the last question: no, you have to buy seperate parts. Please use the above link to find right parts for your machine (just enter  N9E32UA in Search field then click Search) . Regards.

Hi, So earlier today, the touch screen on my laptop cracked. The LCD is fine, but the touch screen has cracked and no longer works. I was looking to see possible replacements. Honestly I don't even use the touch screen functionality, so a regular non-touch LCD screen would work just fine (and be much cheaper too). Does anyone have any advice on where I could find a good replacement? Are there any additional steps I must take? Thanks!

Hi folks, I bought my U430 touch in the Summer of 2013, it's served me well thus far. That is until today, the battery on my laptop randomly pooped out on me, and now I can't even use the thing without having it connected to an outlet at all times. With that being said, I can't find this model's battery on Lenovo's website anywhere, does anyone have a link to the battery on Lenovo's website they don't mind sharing? If not  then a reliable third party vendor would be equally appreciated. Thanks so much!

A:U430 touch battery replacement?

Hi manlyshads ,

Greetings.

Would you have the Machine number for checking further on the details of the pc?
You can see it on the sticker label or visit the parts lookup page .

From the same parts look up page is the part number or FRU matched on the battery sticker.
Use that to check on Lenovo encompass as an authorized parts distributor for availability and pricing.

Hope this answered your query.

Regards

Hi, I got a 3rd Gen Carbon X1 with a touch screen. Now the screen is broken and I am afraid I have to replace a new one. Is it possible for me to replace a non-touch screen instead of a touch one, since I found the touch function didn't that improtant for me? And if I have to get a touch screen, how much it would be?Thanks for the help!!

It isn't just the LCD that is different. The panel, bezel, lid, cable and hinges all are different.  If you want to repair with non-touch, the best choice might be to look for a used, complete assembly

I broke the screen on my Y50 Touch and the display is mostly white and has a large crack, the only thing showing up is the bottom bar. When I hook up an external monitor I can still use the touch functionality so I think the touch Digitizer is still working. Can I just replace the screen underneath and it should be fine?

is there a way to tell if the previous owner of a Flex 15 replaced the screen with a non-touch screen? it came to mind and I was thinking maybe my touch screen don't work because it is non-touch screen lol.

A hinge has broken on m X1 Carbon 1st Gen, Type 3443-CTO.  Replacement is addressed in my copy of Hardware Maintenance Manual for regular LCD screens but I can find no information on replacement with the Touch Screen.   "Bezel" is just a narrow strip at the bottom - not a full frame.  Removing this bezel strip does not look like it would expose screws to replace the hinges.  Does anyone know if the hinges are even replaceable with the touch screeen?   If so, any pointers on how to access behind the screen?  Same 04W3905 hinges as regular screen?   Thanks for the help.

Hello and welcome,

I don't have such a machine but just took a quick look at the HMM.

The way I read it, the instructions in the 1st/main section applies to touch panels.  The 2nd section is titled "Removing or replacing an LCD FRU for models without touch panelfunction" which I take to mean that the preceding section _is_ for touch.

FWIW,
Z.

Hi all, For some reason my P400 Touch no longer holds much of a charge.  For instance, after about an hour it's down to about 10% battery life from 100%.  I've tried a few "quick fix" ideas that didn't help with the issue, so it would seem the only solution is to replace the battery. Is it possible to find batteries for the P400 Touch still, and if so, where is the best place to purchase one?  I'm a little unfamiliar with the insides of this particular laptop, as I've yet to actually crack it open at any point, is there a guide on the best way to gain access to the battery in order to replace it?  Several questions at once, I'm afraid. Thanks for your time!
