XP Pro, Multiple machines, users, printers

Q: XP Pro, Multiple machines, users, printers

Problem: 500 XP machines, 550 Users, 20 Printers, in a building the sizes of 4 football fields. Users are on a standerd desktop, (for the most part). Roaming profiles are in use, (for the most part). Users will move from one machine to another. Using Roaming profile, you can keep thier drives mapped, however, when they print, they need to print to the closest printer.

Question, How do you get the machine to use the closest network printer with roaming profiles?

Thank you

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, Ive been trying to get the following to work:-

1) Monitor a user session based counter on many deployed machines

2) To alert when that counter hits some defined value.

This may sound simple, and it is when you create the Alert manually on the machines when the user is logged on, but the problem is when you try and do this for multiple users who log onto that machine. The issue I found is that when you choose the WMI Counter,
and select 'ALL SESSIONS' it doesnt actually do that, but just selects all current session it can 'see' to include in the monitor. This looks to only be an issue when you create it as an Alert though, as when you create it as a Performance Counter Data Log
it will work and record all session information. In fact you can see what I mean by simply creating two examples using the Processor Counter.

1) Create a new Data Collector Set from Performance Monitor

2) Select to create manually

3) Choose 'Create data logs - Performance counter'

4) Select Processor and Instances of selected object to be 'All instances'

5) You will see it lists this as \Processor(*)\* as the performance counter

This time create a new Data Collector Set for an alert as follows:-

1) Select to create manually

2) Choose 'Performance Counter Alert' this time

3) Select Processor and Instances of selected object to be 'All instances'

4) This time you will see it lists all counters is can see at that time.

Of course the problem with this is tha... Read more

I have a large number of Brother PJ-622 printers that users connect laptops to. Even though they are all exact same model, the laptops are creating brand new local print queue for each individual printer. I suspect Brother has implemented the serial number capability within the USB spec.

The laptops are ending up with a large number of print queues on them (all labeled copy 1, copy 2, etc) which is confusing the end users. Nerds understand what they are and how to pick the correct one for the printer that's currently connected, but must of my users aren't nerds. Brother has a support document on this issue:

I have connected multiple printers of the same model to one PC but can only print from one of the machines. | Brother

But it simply describes how to choose the correct print queue, not how to prevent multiple queues from being created in the first place.

The printers are working great otherwise, but I'd really like to find a way to configure Windows 7 Professional (64-bit) to have just one print queue regardless of which PJ-622 it happens to be connected to.

Any ideas?

Hi;

It appears that NT 4.0 is kicking off various machines running Windows XP from the network, and won't allow users to access files on the server or other computers on the local network. I have fiddled with their accounts a couple of times (checking user logon names, permissions, etc) and without actually changing things have found the network to reappear on these machines. Without doing that every single time (which is every couple of days now), is there a way to make XP and NT interact a little better?

Thanks,
Danielle

A:XP machines/users disconnected from NT server

We had the same problem with XP workstations connecting to win2k servers. I found an article on techrepublic.com which helped quite a bit. Here is their blurb & link:

SOLVE WINXP NETWORK COMMUNICATION PROBLEMS WITH THESE TIPS
After installing Windows XP Service Pack 1, you may experience problems
when communicating with Windows 2000 servers. Find out how to resolve
these issues by editing the Windows registry and policy settings, and
then join this article's discussion.

also at:
http://www.techrepublic.com/article.jhtml?id=r00320030121pos01.htm&fromtm=e103-3&_requestid=152075

The article didn't address everything we saw. We also had to upgrade the drivers for our 3com firewall NIC's as well as turn off caching on fileshares in Active Directory. Turning off caching was the big one. Then workstations which had connected using caching had a little caching icon appear in the taskbar, which said "working offline" and the name of the server they couldn't connect to. We had to right-click that, get settings & disable to option to work offline via caching. Then everything was fine.

Hope that helps.
I know you have NT4 & not windows 2k, but they're similar enough that I figured a recitation of what we had to do might still apply.

Here is my problem. I log onto one of my xp machines as the administrator and setup a printer that is located and shared on another xp machine. The setup goes fine and the printer is there. The problem comes in when I switch to a different user, the printer is not there. I looked into the registery and found that the printer is setup for the current user and not the local machine. I believe that this is the problem and that since the printer is not setup for the local machine then the printer cannot seen by the other users.

Does anybody know of any ways to setup the printer up under the local machine or make the printer available to other of the users?

Hey guys

I'm having trouble setting up my home network. What I'm trying to do is to add my remote PC' s User(myLaptop-Kevin) to the folder permission settings..

Tidbits:

1. myLaptop is detected in my Network. So I guess the physical connection is good. See picture.

2. Also, the remote computer/user is Homegroup'ed to this computer.

3. But when I try to share a folder or especially a Drive thru Right Click>Properties>Sharing>Advanced Sharing>Permission>Add.. the remote user is not detected..

4. And when I try to type my remote computers name and user manually, it says 'Name Not Found'.

5. I also cannot access mapped network drive from my remote laptop..
The reason for this question is that I want to define the access of my files through my network.

And also, I want to develop a visual basic application that can interface to the SQL Server 2008 Database installed on my Laptop..

I hope somebody can help me on this problem.. Since you are my only hope and Ive been scouring the net for two days now..

Thank You very much.

A:Detecting Users from remote Computers/Machines

If you right click on the file/folder/drive and go to Share With... you should be able to choose Homegroup from the list.

A:Multiple Windows 7 Users-Switch between Users-network stops working

When switching users, it's always a good idea to have User 1 close out any applications and documents they have open and then log out before User 2 logs in. It sounds like you have fast user switching enabled, but I'm not aware of that causing any network issues -- unless User 1 was doing something that required a network connect.

Check the Event Viewer for error logs from the time it froze when you tried to disable and enable the network adapter. Post the event ID and description here if you need help diagnosing the issue from the log files. Perhaps another fix is to disable fast user switching, so that users are always forced to log out before someone else can log in.

We're in the process of tweaking user right for increased security. As part of that process we are removing Domain Users from the Local Administrators Group and placing it in the PowerUsers Group. Additionally, we are removing the Novell Client and installing the Zen Desktop Management Agent. In the course of this work I've found that installing a printer under one profile will not result in that printer being present under all profiles. Even though I have access to the local admin group and my domain account also has admin rights...I can install a printer logged in as local admin and then log in with my administrative domain account and the printer is not present. Works the other way around too (i.e. install under domain acct = not present under local admin). Also, if another domain admin logs in the installed printer is not present. Prior to this I've been able to install printers under my profile and they will be present for any user. Any thoughts on what the specific issue is and how to work around it will be appreciated. I can install the printers when the user is logged in but that's more time consuming. Thanks in advance.

Hi,
I ran into an issue a couple months ago where my printers deployed with Group Policy weren't installing on new computers.  I have since found that if I remove, or don't install, KB3170455 my printers do install.  All related to the "package-drivers"
issue.
However, now I have two employees working on different computers reporting missing printers.  After days of troubleshooting I'm stumped.  In both cases when I log in as the Administrator I see the printers and they seem to be working normally.
When the users login they don't see the printers at all.
One thing I tried on both systems and with both users is to make the user a local administrator, move the computer in AD to a different OU and reboot so that the printers are all removed.  Then I move the computer in AD back to the desired OU and see
that the printers all in stall.  On one of the systems this appeared to work, the user can now see the missing printer.  On the other system it did not help, go figure.
Problem is, though, is that even though the printer is now visible the user cannot use it.  Right-clicking and selecting Printer Properties took 3 or 4 minutes to display the Properties dialog box, clicking Print Test Page never worked.

If I log in as the Domain Administrator everything works as expected.
Any thoughts what would cause this issue?  In both cases these computers used to work, one the user has been using this computer of almos... Read more

I want to set printers based on machine, not by user account, so I configure a printer under one account, but in the other account on the same machine, the printer is not created.

Is there a way to create the printer for all user accounts on a machine at the same time?

Details: I am trying to use psexec to call a wscript vbs for all machine. I have a domain policy for printers but I don't want to have to ask everyone to log off and back on just for this, so I'm trying to push it out.

I can use psexec to remotely run the script, but it's running as administrator and the user's printers don't change.

So back to my original question, is there a way to create/delete printers for all users on a machine at the same time?

Is there a way to do this?

A:How to copy network printers to all users on Windows XP?

You just need to share it. Then when another user wants to print to it for the first time, they will browse to it, and when they select it Windows will install the necessary drivers onto their pc. From then on, the printer will be available in their printer drop-down list.

I am at a loss here as I didn't know this was even possible without third party tools.

We have an issue I have been getting reports of that I didn't believe until I watched it happen in front me of.
We have a single domain with around 120 users. WHen one user will highlight some text on their computer and copy it either through edit -> copy or Ctril + C, another users clipboard on a completely separate machine will be overwritten by
the new copied text from another user.  When that user goes to paste text, it is what the other user copied on their computer.  All machines are running Windows 7 64bit with the latest updates installed. Any ideas? These are stock machines with no
third party clipboard sharing tools installed and it seems to happen at random.

Canon MG5300 series Printer
Canon MG5300 series Printer WS
Canon MG5300 series Printer XPS
These three choices also appear when I print anything. Why are there three? Which one should be the default printer? Which one do I choose when printing under what circumstances?
I believe that WS and XPS refer to specific drivers. Why is more than one needed? What are the differences?

Greetings,

We have three medical clinics and the front desk staff float from clinic to clinic depending on their schedule.

I only started here a few months ago and I am working on upgrading their Dell xp systems to Windows 7 systems.

The problem begins to crop up when say a user named Sally will come in and sit down at this system for the first time.. Well, she needs to login, click on outlook icon, let it find her exchange PST and copy settings to her user profile, then she launches the application for the scanner that she uses to scan in ID's and insurance cards for every patient coming in.. The scanner is set to default settings and needs to be tweaked on color depth and double sided, etc.. Then after that, she needs to launch her Medical EMR application.. and then choose various options in the citrix client, ..

TL;DR - Each user needs to spend 20 minutes resetting the defaults at this updated system.

Well this is fine except, I am planning on updating 2 front desk systems at each clinic, the user Sally will need to do all these things EACH time she finds herself sitting down at a system I just swapped out the previous evening.

My thought is this, put a single system down in one clinic and let it sit a week giving most of the float users a chance to work on it for a day, setting all of their preferences etc.

Once I get a bunch of them with user profiles on the local drive, grab an image of that drive and just deploy that to each system I roll out..

Hi,
My first post here.

My question is about how I can set permissions for the users on a network of 3 x computers that all have Windows 7 Home edition to share folders.

Here?s what I?ve got. Three computers, each have 2 x users. The 2 users are 1 x Manager (Admin rights) and 1 x employee (User rights). On one of the computers I have folders which I?d like to share (read / write) with the managers, whilst there are only a few that I?d like to share with the employees.

So basically I have all business data stored on ?PC1? and I want the manager login on PC2 and PC3 to be able to view these folders. Restricted access for the employees.

Is there anyway I can do this ? I?ve been looking at Homegroups / Workgroups, but it seems I can either share with everyone or no-one.

If this is not possible, is there something I can do with an external hard drive or something else ? Or maybe I need a plan B ?

As a compromise, I?d be prepared to do ?plan B?.

Plan B would be:

PC1 has only 1 x user (Manager) and has all the data for the business in several folders.

PC2 has only 1 x user (Manager) and has access to ALL the folders on PC1

PC3 has only 1 user (Employee) and has access to a limited number of folders on PC1.

How would I plan B ?

Thanks in advance,

Graeme

A:File Sharing and restricting between multiple users on multiple PC's

I'm not so sure about this working with Windows Home version because it's limited in certain areas like creating a Homegroup though it can join a Homegroup.

Here is the deal on separate shares for particular users. You need to add those users as standard accounts on which ever machine you need to set up the special shares for.

Once you add them to your machine as a standard user they will show up on the Share With list in the Homegroup permissions settings, at that point you can add them them and adjust the permissions as desired. It's really as simple as that.

Hey there

I have an ADSL connection, with a wireless router attached. Then have two laptops both connected via the wireless connection. When they are both being used, they usually cause an IP conflict causing one to drop the connection. I beleive this is because my connection has dynamic IP and both machines are trying to connect directly.

One laptop is my work machine and the other is my wifes home machine. Neither machine is on all the time so I havent tried setting up the internet connection sharing.

Any suggestions on how to set this up? I am thinking of using an old PC box as an always on directly connected to the ADSL line and then sharing the connection through there. If that is an option, what kind of specs should it have? Or is there an easier way?

Thanks!!!

Both machines are connected to a common Linksys router to my DSL ISP.
When switched to Offline Help, I get results. Online help, nada.
I did search this problem here on Seven Forums and at Google, but no solution was ever found.
The fact that it's TWO rigs affected is making me wonder if Microsoft has shut down online help for 7.
No viruses, no malware, sfc /scannow was run on both machines with no errors found.

Does anyone have any ideas what's going on? I'd appreciate any input.

Welcome here.

I couldnt get you clear in your previous post.

You installed XP with the same key to 3 machines and when you went to validate, it isnt validating. You would buy a new win XP but still not willing to reinstall the XP. you are looking for a software so that you could just update the key on the already installed xp rather than installing all over again and validate. If this is what you want, give a reply, will let you know the solution.

Hi All,

Not sure this is the right spot but here goes. I have my own business, domain name, etc. I use multiple machines - laptop, workstation & handheld (iphone3GS). Is there a way to to have all my email, calender and certain directories of files, etc stay synchronized across the laptop and workstation? Also, it would be nice to have the email and calendar synch'd with the handheld as well. I used MS office 2007 on a win 7 laptop and a Win XP 64 workstation.

I currently have a pop email protocol but I believe I could switch it to IMAP (of which I know nothing) if that could help.

Any help or a link or a search criteria would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Billmce

A:Better organized....multiple machines and email

I had more or less the same requirement, and settled on syncing.net as a solution between laptop and workstation; I sync my Nokia smartphone to the workstation using Nokia's own (pretty poor to be honest) software. Syncing.net works well for me

Hi - We are finding multiple machines (setup identically) with BSOD appearing at different sites, whilst running out own application, need some help with interpreting the dump files which are attached, if anyone can point us in the right direction?

Tried using different brand machines but same error occurs, though this is limited to W7, XP did not suffer this issue.

Thanks again for your help - Sam

Hello.

Looks like we are going to roll out W7 on multiple machines. We have approx. 38 identical machines (XP) we want to install this too. I know we need to back up the data then do a "Custom" install, and reinstall the programs, but has anyone used anything that will speed up the process (SUS, Ghost, etc).
Oh, and would it be best to roll these out prior to our W2008R2 roll out, at the same time or W2008R2 first?

Thanks for any and all suggestions.

SMC

A:Install On multiple Machines at the same time

HK

have you tested win 7 extensively in your environment. Networking, sharing, compatibilty with core apps?

For 38 machines its really not that bad. You can create images (ghost or acronis) you can also slipstream the upgrades and make it unattended. that number of machines can be done easily over the weekend with a little help.

Let me know if I can help, or if you have questions

A:Irritating errors, multiple machines.

Well, I can tell you that 0x5 error codes are "Access denied", which means that the process encountered an error due to not having enough permission on a certain task and it crashed. Does it happens across multiple userprofiles, or just one?

Hi guys

I have a classroom that we need to log in as a local admin (the exam software needs administrator privelidges to work correctly) and I was wondering if anyone could come up with a solution to save me having to go to each machine and log them in indevidually. Ideally I'd like to be able to do this all remotely.

A:Login multiple machines remotely

what about vnc? i think i remember seeing that software on the computers when i was going to school. you would still have to log into every computer but you could do it all without having to leave your computer. vnc shows whatever is on the screen of the computer that it is connected to.

Hello all.
I have been thinking of how can I make MBSA scan reports for multiple machines.

As of now I've been looking report from GUI only, but it is too much time taking when you have to make a summary of missing updates of around 200 computers at a stretch.

Can someone throw some light on mbsacli options to generate reports for remote scanning from a server. I read that detailed report cannot be generated using
mbsacli for multiple machines scan. If anyone can provide a command for generating report (incuding all the details available in GUI) for a single host, I can create a batch script to do the rest.
P.S.- I am using MBSA for remote bulk scans, not local scans.

Thanks,
Kriss

I like short answers.

Nope, activation codes only work on one Machine at a time (if Seven came with a PC it can only be installed on that PC) and installing it on another machine would be illegal and against the EULA anyway.

Hi There
I need to help a company wipe 18 HP branded Desktops and most of them are with 500GB SATA HDD of 3.5inch.

What is the best way of doing this as the company need me to make sure the Data is securely wiped and need something like a Low level format like copying zeroes.

Also I need to provide them with a report that the Data was securely wiped.

I need to do this in around 5 hours and this also need to be taken in to consideration.

thanks
Lakshan.

A:Data wipe in multiple Desktop machines

Depends on how sensitive and likely to be searched for by a future user the data is .

Something like Partition wizard bootable disk/USB could completely wipe at partition level which may be sufficient for secure wipes

Another alternative is 2015: How to securely erase hard drives (HDDs) and solid state drives (SSDs) | ZDNet

The only true secure wipe is complete physical destruction of the drives

I have been asked to create a scheduled task for machines in meeting and conference rooms that reboots them after 4 hours of inactivity.
I have the xml file exported from my own machine, but I can't find a way to allow this to import via script that doesn't need the target system name.
Is there either a way to import a single task into multiple machines withouth having to edit the script for each OR a way to add a task via a registry edit?

I just got this problem on 2x Win7 and 2x Win8 machines today. (20 other machines are ok)

All happened within 1 hour of each other.  multiple 30-60sec freezes with any and all programs (all office, trillian, notepad, firefox, ie, chrome, file explorer.... etc) in normal (not responsive showing up in titles). explorer.exe would crash multiple times as well.

Works perfectly fine in safe mode .

ran the following (in safe mode with networking)

rkill (found nothing)
tdsskiller (nothing)
adware (nothing)
malwarebyte (nothing)
malwarebyte rootkit scanner (nothing)
eset online (nothing)

I then ran Temp File Cleaner, but didnt help a bit.

A:all programs randomly freeze (multiple machines)

It was bit defender that was causing the problem. Uninstalled it and everything when back to normal

Hi all,
Just a bit of background...

I have recently taken over as IT support for a small school.

The school wants all the PC's re-imaged (Win 7 Pro... checking tomorrow if 32 / bit)

All PC's running on school domain to a local Server 2008

There are no images available on the network and the old IT company is un-contactable.

Each PC has it's own Product Key label.

My question: Is it possible to get a 'blank' (ie. no Product key) Win 7 ISO, put it on the server, and then reinstall Win7 on each PC.... once installed (or during installation) we can enter Product key.

Many thanks!

I hope this is an easy one.

I maintain WAY too many e-mail addresses (like most of us), but I have two accounts that I need access to on all of my machines. I know I can configure the mail application to leave messages on the server so I can check (and delete) them from another machine later, but how do I keep OE from downloading the same message over and over?

If I want to check my personal mail account on my work machine, but be able to download the mail at my home, how do I check my accounts at regular intervals without having many copies of the same messages at work?

There has to be a simple solution that I am missing.

A:Solved: OE6 Mail Configuration For Multiple Machines

Most ISPs have a web mail service. I have Earthlink and can check my mail on the internet and if I want to read or delete the mail before I download it to any of my computers, I can do so from the web.

Hi there

I'd really love a keyboard that had say 4 buttons on it --like Fn buttons that would switch output to any one of 4 machines -- such a simple idea but why nobody hasn't yet got one out on the market I can't understand it

I'm really FED up with messing around with two / 3 physical keyboards and I don't want a USB switch box on my desk.

All the keyboard would need is 4 USB outs (or 4 receivers for wireless) the active connection being made by a key press on the keyboard. In fact the only difficulty would be the right receiver for the wireless transmitter but that is easily solved by say a different colour key on the keyboard and an id (same colour) on the receiver.

I'm sure some of you testing several machines on a workbench have faced similar problems of multiple keyboards.

Any budding entrepreneurs out there --I'm sure loads of you have felt a need for this type of keyboard. Maybe there is one - but not seen at all !!.

Any engineers -- any idea how I could even consruct one --I'm quite handy with a Soldering Iron etc.

Cheers
jimbo
